L'isola degli uomini pesce (Screamers, 1979)
"Oh, well, I can understand that a scientist like Marvin is ready to give his life for a discovery of this magnitude. But you don't give a damn about science, do you, Rackham? All you care about is the treasure down there, and I'm damn sure it won't be used to promote anyone's research."
"Yes, I'm afraid you're right. I intend to keep it all for myself. Dreadful, isn't it?"
#l'isola degli uomini pesce#the island of the fishmen#screamers#italian cinema#1979#sergio martino#cesare frugoni#luciano martino#barbara bach#claudio cassinelli#richard johnson#beryl cunningham#joseph cotten#franco javarone#cameron mitchell#mel ferrer#eunice bolt#roberto posse#giuseppe castellano#franco mazzieri#known by a dozen different titles and in a number of different forms; i accidentally downloaded the Screamers cut‚ an American version#which cut about half an hour of Martino's film‚ added a newly shot prologue with Ferrer and Mitchell‚ and enhanced some of the#gore fx. I'd rather have seen the og film and will have to get to it eventually‚ but even in bastardized form this was a lot of fun#largely that's down to Johnson's superbly mannered‚ urbane villain. he's clearly having just the best time‚ chewing up the scenery#and being just despicable whenever he's onscreen; a villain for the ages truly. against him is poor Cassinelli‚ having just an awful#time as he goes from disaster to disaster. mix in some human experiments‚ the lost city of Atlantis‚ a heap of treasure and some#stranded convicts and you have a riproaring adventure film that's honestly more Boy's Own adventure than the sloppy sleazy nastiness#I'd gone in expecting (and most of the sloppy nasty that is here was added by the US!). oh and apologies for the slightly risqué picture#I've chosen to end this post with‚ but it turns out there's a whole photoshoot with Bach and the fish men and it's kind of amazing#ok i just read that apparently Johnson rewrote most of his dialogue for this and that only makes me love him more

Donnie Iris & The Cruisers Coming to Capitol Theatre October 12th
Pittsburgh native Donnie Iris and the Cruisers today announce a show at Capitol Theatre in Wheeling, WV, on Saturday, October 12. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, August 29 at 10 am at etix.com. Considered to be the best screamer in rock and roll, Pittsburgh icon Donnie Iris learned how to sing from his Mother and then from Tony Bennett and Marvin Gaye. In 1970, Donnie was a member of the Jaggerz and earned a gold record for writing and singing the No. 1 song “The Rapper.” In 1978, Donnie was asked to join “Wild Cherry” (“Play That Funky Music, White Boy”) in the group’s waning days. This is when Donnie met Mark Avsec, his future collaborator and partner, in “Wild Cherry” who then began discussing plans for a recording project and in 1979 Donnie Iris & The Cruisers were born. About Donnie Iris Donnie learned how to sing from his Mother and then from Tony Bennett and Marvin Gaye. In 1970, as a member of the Jaggerz, Donnie earned a gold record for writing and singing the No. 1 song “The Rapper.” In or around 1978, Donnie was asked to join “Wild Cherry” (“Play That Funky Music, in the group’s waning days. Donnie met Mark Avsec, his future collaborator and co-writer in “Wild Cherry” and the two of them began discussing plans for a recording project. Oddly enough, Mark’s first love (at the age of 15) was a huge fan of “The Rapper” and Mark thought that was somehow profound. Then again, Mark sees profundity in a good many things! Mark and Donnie began writing some songs in Donnie’s basement, and eventually they recorded some tracks at Jeree’s Recording Studio. Donnie knew of a terrific bass player named Albritton McClain; he also heard about Marty Lee Hoenes, a hot young guitar player who was playing in a band called “The Pulse.” Donnie went to go see both Albritton and Marty and, after hearing them, invited both to come down to Jeree’s Recording Studio to record some tracks for an unknown project; Mark invited drummer Kevin Valentine to the same session (Kevin and Mark were then currently in the band “Breathless”). Mark brought some songs and sketches of songs, a couple of keyboards, and was eager to produce his first record. Pleasantries all around, within a couple of hours the boys were cutting the tracks for “Agnes,” “Ah! Leah!” and the other recordings that would comprise the “Back On The Streets” album. The song “Ah! Leah!” was passed by every major label. However, in 1980 you could still break new music on the radio. WMMS in Cleveland added the record. WDVE in Pittsburgh added the record. WBCN in Boston added the record. The phones exploded. The single and album were issued by Midwest Records, out of Cleveland, Ohio, and both began to chart on the Cashbox and Billboard charts. Eventually, Chrysalis and MCA/Universal made overtures to pick up the music – MCA/Universal prevailed. “Ah! Leah!” peaked at or around #29 in Billboard’s Singles Chart, achieved much critical acclaim, and was one of the most played songs in the Album Oriented Radio format in 1980. Donnie was christened by a Toronto reviewer after a blazing show at “The El Mocambo” in Toronto as the “new king of cool.” Hence, the follow-up album was called “King Cool.” The “King Cool” album was recorded in the “stacked vocals” style that Mark and Donnie pioneered on the first album. It yielded the songs “Love Is Like A Rock” and “That’s The Way Love Ought To Be.” It also yielded the song “My Girl,” which reached at or near #20 on Billboard’s Singles Chart. Beginning in 1980, the band began touring relentlessly, pausing only for bouts of recording. During a three-year stretch, the band headlined shows all over the country and toured with dozens of artists, including Journey, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, The Romantics, Eddie Money, UFO, Nazareth, Ted Nugent, Joan Jett, Hall & Oates, and the Michael Stanley Band, to name a few. In August 2004, “Donnie Iris and the Cruisers” celebrated their 25th anniversary before 4,000 screaming fans at the Chevy Amphitheater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. All three drummers – Kevin Valentine, Tommy Rich, and Brice Foster were on the stage (as was Mark’s daughter, Danna, who began sitting, in with the band as a guest drummer when she turned 16 years old). The “Ellwood City” album, three years in the making, was released in May 2006, and Donnie Iris and The Cruisers have been touring ever since. Read the full article

Zombie 1979 also known as zombie flesh eaters is an unauthorized sequel to dawn of the dead . But not really connected on any way . Great Italian Director Lucio Fulchi brought this to the screen and movie goers were given barf bags as a gimmick. But then at the time this was kind of a in your face gross out movie . Starring the late great Richard Johnson who later starred in island of the fish men ( later re tooled into the Roger Corman film screamers ) Tisa Farrow ( Mia’s sister ) and Ian McCullugh. There’s a scene where one actress goes skin diving topless and there’s a zombie in the water that tries to eat her. She escapes and the zombie proceeds to attack a shark and eats it . Although zombie is a pretty good movie it cannot match the Dawn of the dead 1978. Lucio Fulchi was a competitor to Dario Argento in a way . I believe zombie was called a video nasty because of the gore displayed throughout. It is now a cult classic .

What's Included
1979 Overdrive Special 50 Watt
This 1979 Dumble Overdrive Special amp head is a little brighter than the other amps in the collection with a more articulate midrange and tighter low end. It was connected to a 1979 Dumble 2x12 cab with JB85 Celestion speakers during the tone modeling process, producing 4 Tone Models: Clean 1, Clean 2 (FET input), Overdrive 1, Overdrive 2. 1983 Overdrive Special 100 Watt
This 1983 Dumble Overdrive Special amp head is harmonically rich with slightly higher mids than the ′84 ODS below. It was modeled running through a 1983 Dumble 2x12 cab with EV 12L speakers, resulting in 5 Tone Models: Clean 1, Clean 2 (+ preamp boost), Overdrive 1, Overdrive 2, Overdrive 3. 1984 Overdrive Special 50 Watt
This 1984 Dumble Overdrive Special combo amp offers a smooth and velvety overdrive with a touch of low-mid punch. For its capture, it was connected to 2017 Van Weelden 2x12 cab with EV 12L speakers, producing 5 Tone Models: Clean 1, Clean 2 (+ preamp boost), Overdrive 1, Overdrive 2, Overdrive 3. 2004 Overdrive Special 50 Watt

Two legendary pedals
1981 Ibanez TS808 The first Tube Screamer, the TS808, was released in the late ′70s. A brilliant distortion and overdrive box from Ibanez, it has built a reputation that’s led it to pass into musical urban myth. Helped along with Stevie Ray's use, the TS808 is still highly in demand today with vintage units easily trading above $1,000. Silver Klon Centaur overdrive The legendary Silver Klon Centaur overdrive holds a mystique that’s undeniable as evidenced by the steep prices it fetches on used gear websites. With its unique overdriven tones and boosting capabilities, it’s the ideal boost to your front end or a full-on drive inspiring players from Jeff Beck to John Mayer.

De Algemene Verwarring #100 - 30 October 2023
The hundredth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, October 30, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is The Fall and I can't think of a better band to be featured in the hundredth (pronounce thàt) episode of De Algemene Verwarring (well, there is one other band). Anyway, here they are in their 1988 line-up, the line-up that recorded the albums The Frenz Experiment and I Am Kurious Oranj, with Brix, Marcia Schofield, Craig Scanlon, Steve Hanley and Simon Wolstencroft. The Frenz Experiment is, I think, a rather under-estimated album by the band, at least it's not mentioned that much when people talk about the best Fall albums. However it features one of their biggest hits, the cover of The Kinks' "Victoria", but that is not even the best song on the album, it has also "Hit The North", "Carry Bag Man", "Oswald Defence Lawyer" and "Bremen Nacht" and those are all classics in my ears. I got first acquainted with The Fall thanks to the Kortrijk library, where in those mid-to-late eighties I picked up copies of Perverted By Language and This Nation's Saving Grace (PBL still being my all time favorite Fall record). In general, the Kortrijk library had an excellent selection of vinyls in those days, I owe a great deal of my musical memories to them. In the nineties I kind of lost connection with The Fall, it was the period that they incorporated more electronics into their music which didn't appeal that much to me and in all honesty, in the nineties I was more of a hipster indie boy listening to Sebadoh and Palace Brothers. I came back to the band in the noughties when they released excellent albums such as Fall Heads Roll and Imperial Wax Solvent, and finally got to see them live in Porto, of al places. Anyway, The Fall, probably the best band in the world, had a great influence on my musical taste, I still got lots of love for repetitive music (be it from Swans or from Lungfish or even Emeralds) and Mark E. Smith is a fookin' legend.
So, episode 100 is filled with 22 cover songs, featuring "Victoria" by The Fall, amongst others. I've added the band who recorded the original version in the playlist. Hope you enjoy it. And thanks for listening 100 times to my "duiding". And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Shadow Doom!
Captain Marvel [Marvel Spotlight #4]
Nonsense.
Cap is sucked into “another universe, another dimension” to fight the Soul Masters, the Screamers, and the Living Shadow.
There are good guys here who don't know how to fight their fearsome opponents. So Cap spends a page showing basic self-defence. Then... they are ready!! Except... it gets them all killed. And their souls taken. Whatever that means. Much is made of not having a soul in this story. But it's all rather vague, and daft. Particularly at the end. Nothing about this is good.
On Sale Date: October 23, 1979.
