Tournament 2 : Characters with Demigods' names
Round 2 Poll 2
Demigods they share a name with :
- Orion : according to a version of his myth, he was the son of the Greek god Poseidon and the mortal princess Euryale (no relation with the Gorgon of the same name)
- Gilgamesh : demigod, son of the Mesopotamian goddess Nissun and (according to some sources) the Sumerian king Lugalbanda

Dungeon Meshi Liveblog: Musing on Ages, & Dragon Prep
"Desire" mention - how much does Tensu know of the details of the origin of dungeons? (More than I do, probably...but I know this is thematically important.)
"Us"? Aren't gnomes another long-lived species? Ok this is going to be continuously relevant to the geopolitics so I need to break it down. From the wiki:
Elves: lifespan: 400; adult at 80
Gnomes: lifespan: 240; adult at 40
Dwarves: lifespan: 200; adult at 40
Tallmen: lifespan: 60; adult at 16
Orcs: lifespan: 55; adult at 14
Kobolds: lifespan: 55; adult at 13
Halffoots: lifespan: 50; adult at 14
I see - so really we're dealing with 3 factions: Elves, Gnomes & Dwarves, and Everyone Else. I find it interesting that the longer-lived races reach maturity at 17-20% of their average lifespan, while the younger-lived races all do so at around 25% of their average lifespan. I feel a little like this is a cop-out on the writer's part in trying to keep the ages of maturity a little closer to one another - though of course it's a cultural thing by each race (and, I'm sure, each culture within each race - idk how monolithic the whole comic will treat them, but it would track with the thematic worldbuilding for their to be multiple distinct social groups within each race, even if they do tent to band together against the other races!)
Based on the categories of "long-lived" and "short-lived", the latter seem to view all of the former as much the same - but I'm SURE the Elves have a different view of it, and I'm sure the Dwarves and, as we see here, Gnomes, are very aware of and irritated by the Elves' view.
...and as we see here, and earlier with Chilchuck admitting to being 29 (solidly middle-aged!) and Marcille going, "Aw, so you are a kid!", people rarely make any effort to understand each others relative ages, instead just coasting on their own life-based assumptions.
With reference to above, we can see that Namari at 61 is pretty exactly equivalent to Kaka and Kiki at 20.
Also: this little scene wasn't in the show at all and I love it! Namari in mentor mode!
.
ALRIGHT RED DRAGON TIME!! Hey look, literally the 2nd panel in this ghost city is 2/3 winged lions by volume. Hmmm...
.
I love how it's explicitly Shuro's job to get the final killshot, presumably because he has Feats for this (ie, cool-looking moments) as a "real" anime character (Easterner). This literally bears up with what we see of him in the future.
.
Chilchuck: I will NOT fight!
Chilchuck: I'll totally be dragon bait with you, though.
Chilchuck: Not that I care if you succeed or survive or anything! I'm only here because you paid up front.
.
Laios using the Inspiring Leader speech feat! They're all having a Heroes' Feast before fighting the dragon, a classic pre-dragon act for bonus HP and immunity to being Frightened! I know this isn't actually D&D but that post that I think came through my queue earlier today is right: it DOES have the same bones. It's like reading the Locked Tomb and being aware that this author was deep in Homestuck, or Scholomance vis a vis Harry Potter canon and fandom. I know where this writer has been, because I have been there too.
.
THE BOY IS HERE! THE MAN THE MYTH THE OVERWORKED* LEGEND!
THIS SISTER-EATING MOTHERFUCKER!!
*Crack AU where the whole dragon fight is averted because it talks and somehow the conversation leads to Chilchuck going, "And the Mage isn't even letting you sleep? Tsk. You've got to start a union." And then Laios gets all starry-eyed, "A Monster Union?!" And then the Mage is eventually defeated by all the monsters of the dungeon, and also the poor sane ghosts as well, unionizing against him, and "king" becomes just the title for the Union Rep, whose main job is to honk an airhorn at presumptuous Elves and tell them to fuck off like a Canadian goose.
.
I LOVE THEM SO MUCH

September Reading Recap
A little late but it's still October! so it counts.
The Language of the Night: Essays on Fantasy and Science Fiction by Ursula K. Le Guin. I have read less Ursula K. Le Guin than I perhaps should have, but I wanted to read these essays by her anyway, and I found them rewarding. I don't read a lot of essay collections by authors, which is funny because what I have read I've really enjoyed, but perhaps that's just because I'm picky. I particularly enjoyed the way that "Is Gender Necessary?" had the original essay with Le Guin's revisions/later thoughts side by side - it felt appealingly honest and good to have the portrayal of a writer's developing opinions and willingness to revise her perspective with time.
The Monkey and the Monk: An Abridgment of The Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, trans. by Anthony Yu. I would still like to read the unabridged Journey to the West at some point, but I'm a little intimidated mostly by the problem of getting access to the, what, four volumes that it occupies (by the same translator)? My library doesn't have them. So this was a start. And I enjoyed it! I wish there had been more translator's notes, though. I feel like I could've gotten more out of it with more information/context that I don't have. But just on its own, it's a series of good stories, many of which can be accurately described as "a romp." I imagine the unabridged version has more of those coveted "translator's notes" since I think the assumption is that a more generalized audience reading an abridged version wouldn't want those.
To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose. I'm apparently reading some "magic school" books, which is surprising given that it's not a genre I'm predisposed to be drawn to. But this one came with a recommendation, and looked like it would be interesting. It doesn't quite match up to the Scholomance series in terms of how much I enjoyed it, but it was good enough that I'll be following it into the sequels.
The Ratline: Love, Lies, and Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive by Philippe Sands. This book would've been better if it didn't try to combine two stories in one, which it kind of did. One was about the life (and death) of a particular Nazi, while the other was about the way that one of that Nazi's descendants has responded to his father's legacy. It's possible they could've been tied together better, but I think it would've been a stronger book focusing on one or the other. (Though the latter was already an article.) Still, it was well written, and the first half in particular was compelling; it just lagged a little in the last quarter or so.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. I've been meaning to read this book for ages and am trying a new thing where I attempt to rotate through genres (or at least, I was; I've kind of fallen off it for the moment). Which means actually reading some of the realistic fiction on my shelf. It was a very good novel, though I felt like the last third overstayed its welcome somewhat. The part taking place during the Golden Age of comics was easily my favorite. I don't know how much I like Michael Chabon's prose, but his storytelling is strong.
Forge of Darkness by Steven Erikson. Another one I've been meaning to read for a long time. I feel like the role of the siblings (Andarist, Silchas Ruin, and Anomander Rake) was somewhat overstated by the back copy, and they (and their relationships with each other) was really what I wanted more of from this. But it was still a good read, and made me want to reread Malazan: Book of the Fallen, which would be a hell of an undertaking but one I might do in the somewhat near future anyways. Any prequel that makes me want to reread the series it's prequelling is doing something right, I think.
Ballad of Sword and Wine (Qiang Jin Jiu) vol. 2 by Tang Jiu Qing. Still really enjoying rereading this. The political intrigue continues to be choice, and the tension/banter between Shen Zechuan and Xiao Chiye is delightful to read. It's interesting, because I feel like this is one of a handful of cnovels that I've read where I feel like I'm not reading for the tropes so much as I'm reading for the plot itself, which is just an interesting contrast.
Beauty is a Wound by Eka Kurniawan. This was an...interesting...book, but unfortunately the thing that sticks out to me most about it was that there was kind of a lot of rape. And perhaps that was part of the point, part of what this book was saying about the history of Indonesia, but it certainly made for some rough reading. I think this is a book where I'd be interested in reading commentary and analysis, though, which does say something positive about it - a book that provides me with some kind of food for thought is one that is worth something, regardless of my "positive" or "negative" feelings about it.
High Holidays season means a lot of time for reading, as does a depressive episode that has me desperately seeking distractions. I'm currently reading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer, but I have a number of books on deck, including Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi and The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I'm also probably going to end up reading Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky, though I might do a Jeff Vandermeer instead (A Peculiar Peril or Dead Astronauts).
and while I have no lack of things to read: I'm still looking for recommendations for horror and mystery books! If anyone has any, please let me know.

3, 22, 26?
3. How would you describe your writing style?
Uh. Functional. Highly functional. Occasionally I strive toward the slightly poetic or prosaic, and I feel like my own tendency toward dry humor will come out from time to time, but otherwise I think it's pretty… basic.
(The more literary answer is that my style is highly reflective of my history of pretty much only ever writing within the bounds of fanfiction. While there are obviously exceptions, there tends to be a lot of homogeneity amongst fanfiction writing style, for a lot of reasons, including (1) You tend to write what you read, and (2) People generally turn to fanfiction for literary comfort food. While a House of Leaves or an On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is nice on occasion, we are mostly here to straight torture or sexify or cuddle our blorbos and we don’t want to beat around the bush. It is in no way a bad thing! It’s actually kind of cool, from a literary perspective, because it's genuinely recognizable. Like the Scholomance trilogy! They are good, but you can tell by page two that this person absolutely cut their teeth on fanfiction. So, I am a product of my experiences.)
22. What is it about watching the same two idiots fall in love over and over again?
See above: comfort food.
Long answer: for me, I am a person who does not instantly attach to characters. I rarely enter fandoms that are based around a single book or movie, and greatly favor comics/television/series because it lets me spend a lot of time with characters and my affection for them can really take root and grow. Fanfic is just the next natural extension of that. I am very much a person who finds a Happy Button and then wants to mash the Happy Button ad nauseum until it breaks. I listen to the same album on repeat for three months. I just discovered Tim Tams and have bought a box a week for the last four months. And when I settle into a fandom, I want to see my blorbos having nice things over and over and over and over again. :D
26. What would you describe as OOC?
Oof this is a tough one! I think characterization is such a personal thing that it’s impossible to define that. I definitely have opinions on things that I read, on whether they’re in/out of character, but the beautiful thing about fandom is that we are all casting prisms of the same characters and what is out of character for me may be in character for someone else! So, eh.
I will say that I feel like any time I start writing for a new fandom, my first fic or two will always feel a little rocky in characterization. Once I’ve written more and developed a more nuanced and consistent concept of the characters, I usually look back on the early stuff and go woof. Sandman has been no exception to this. (Fond wave at fly me to the moon. You’re not completely terrible.)
(for the writers ask meme)

finishing up writing my steddie bang (only 15-20k left to go ahhhh) is reviving the stranger things brainrot which would be all well and good if my brain wasn't currently also lighting up like a fucking christmas tree on crack at every little mention of merlin, black sails, and lord of the rings, absolutely obsessed with breathing through the scholomance series, while also trying to convince me that we should finally read the sandman comics next which, without a shred of doubt, would drag that brainrot back full swing. like. i'm all for an entire circus of blorbos but if we could keep them on rotation instead of making them play the hunger games for attention that would be fucking great. please. brain. i am begging on my hands and knees. help
#mona rambles#i am NOT going to tag all those fandoms if you follow me at this point this is on you#just. brainrot season I'm doing soo well#it's like. i know my brainrots never really leave they just go dormant (for the most part) and it's FINE. i like that#it means whenever i hyperfixate on something new it's like putting something on the shelf to come back to later#but this is just. extensive. i'm Struggling. like??? hello??????#if we could CHILL. for three fucking seconds. good god

13 books
What’s up readers?! How about a little show and tell? Answer these 13 questions, tag 13 lucky readers and if you’re feeling extra bookish add a shelfie! Let’s Go!
Tagged by @quarkscooljacket
This is perfect because I had an extremely slow start to the year in terms of reading and then SUDDENLY in the last few weeks I got my library card un-blocked and then maxed out my reservations and am now reading a bunch of books!!!!!!!
1) The Last book I read:
Question 7 by Richard Flanagan! I extremely liked it! Very contemplative novel/nonfic/memoir mishmash threading through such things as the way scifi writers & physicists prefigured & led to & failed to prevent the bombing of Hiroshima, his father being a POW in Japan who almost certainly would not have survived (and had him!) if the bombs had not been dropped, the history of Tasmania, his own near drowning while kayaking in the Franklin river, and the way history and memory shapes us and is eternally carried forward with us while also being forgotten/rewritten/impossible to pin down for certain. At least, that's my best go of describing this book.
2) A book I recommend:
This is... so open-ended... if you want to identify native trees in Victoria and nearby areas I would recommend Leon Costerman's Native Trees and Shrubs of South-Eastern Australia lmao. I really like The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker, a historical fiction/urban fantasy book about a golem and a jinni living in immigrant communities in New York in the early 1900s, and also the sequel.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
Not a book per se but one of the webcomics I got into relatively recently is What happens next https://whathappensnext.webcomic.ws/ which reminds me a bit of Nevada by Imogen Binnie except if all of the characters were youtubers and/or tumblrinas and either involved in a murder or just big into true crime (in universe, fictional). It's very gripping. Of course now that I'm caught up there's the usual wait for updates but such is life.
I also read The Wicked + the Divine last week, since I'd never previously read the final 2 volumes, and that was good. I'm glad to find out I liked the ending. Comics are always a quick read but nevertheless some are more action-packed and fast paced than others lmao, and I just ripped through these in every spare second.
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
Naomi Novik is probably my most read author because I've read most of her books twice or more... So far I've read Spinning Silver & His Majesty's Dragon three times each; those are 2 of my absolute favourites. I've read most of the rest of the Temeraire series 2 or 3 times too but few of them grab me quite as much as the first one, & I read the first Scholomance book twice. I feel like I should reread Uprooted because that's the only one of her books I've not liked (though some of the duller Temeraire books get a bit of a leg-up from being in a series with other books I really like lol); since I only remember vague impressions of it now, which might not be accurate, I would like to see if my feelings have changed, or if not, figure out more specifically what I didn't like about it.
5) A book on my TBR:
Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright also happens to be one of the books I borrowed!! It was mentioned on a podcast along with Question 7 and Search History (currently reading, q12) so that is how I found out about these 3 books and was compelled to reserve them. However, currently I am daunted by how fat it is (700+ pages) so it's just sitting on my bedside table and I am... reading the shorter books first lmao.
I will also leave the blurb copypasted from @quarkscooljacket's answer:
Praiseworthy is an epic set in the north of Australia, told with the richness of language and scale of imagery for which Alexis Wright has become renowned. In a small town dominated by a haze cloud, which heralds both an ecological catastrophe and a gathering of the ancestors, a crazed visionary seeks out donkeys as the solution to the global climate crisis and the economic dependency of the Aboriginal people. His wife seeks solace from his madness in following the dance of butterflies and scouring the internet to find out how she can seek repatriation for her Aboriginal/Chinese family to China. One of their sons, called Aboriginal Sovereignty, is determined to commit suicide. The other, Tommyhawk, wishes his brother dead so that he can pursue his dream of becoming white and powerful. This is a novel which pushes allegory and language to its limits, a cry of outrage against oppression and disadvantage, and a fable for the end of days.
6) A book I’ve put down:
The most recent book I decided I did not want to finish is The Female Man by Joanna Russ. It sounded conceptually cool but I was just finding it way too hard to follow or care about. Too many sections where I couldn't figure out which character/s' perspective it was or whatever. I'm sure there's other books I didn't finish before they became overdue and I had to return them but can't remember, I usually want to finish them eventually. Whether I will get around to it is another matter.
7) A book on my wish list:
I don't normally buy books these days, but nevertheless tempted by A Vast, Pointless Gyration of Radioactive Rocks and Gas in Which You Happen to Occur, edited by the Daniels. It looks extremely interesting and also extremely pretty...
8) A favorite book from childhood:
Hmmmm. I guess I did choose my name from The Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson. Definitely up there among my favourite childhood books.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
Another very open ended one...... this depends so much????? what friend... what occasion... idk... there are books I do kind of want to give people but either I haven't decided or it's supposed to be a surprise and they may see this. although recently I have been incepting Lauren with my impeccable borrowing tastes, reading my library books after me is surely the same thing right??
10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own
Ismene's Survivable Resistance by Claire Gaskin... she is one of my favourite poets, and I rly like the concept of this book, and I saw her do a reading of some of the poems! However I think my favourite poems by her are ones that are not in this book.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Hmm... Evolution's Rainbow by Joan Roughgarden is an interesting book published in 2004 about the diversity of sexual and gender variation in the world. The first section is about other animals, and especially about the ways human biologists have imposed ideological frameworks in classifying them; the middle section is about human intersex variation and biology; and the third section is about human cultural sex and gender roles throughout history.
12) What are you currently reading:
Search History by Amy Taylor. About the dating life of a classic mildly messy millennial woman. In this case she goes through the facebook profile of the most recent guy she starts dating and then finds out that his ex girlfriend died, and then goes through the accounts and photos of the ex girlfriend and gets a bit obsessed with her, but has to not let on to the new guy that she has done this deep dive. It's okay! Enjoyable, pretty fast to read, some funny bits and observations and whatnot, but not particularly a stand out read. She is not as much of a freak as I expected she would be when I started reading it, which is both a relief and also a disappointment. So far everyone seems to just be normal mildly flawed people doing overall reasonable things imperfectly, and the conflict is just navigating life's complexity (there's a lot about everyday sexism though). Mostly I just keep thinking how glad I am to not be a heterosexual woman or ever had to attempt online dating/app dating, which are both quite boring and excessively smug things to feel, however, I am simply a bit boring and smug. Anyway I'm only halfway through, I'm expecting/hoping there'll be some twists or something. Maybe about the boyfriend...?
update: was talking to some friends about it this arvo and they said not only that it does get crazier, but ALSO that supposedly it's a modern telling of Rebecca, which I have not read but have now reserved lmao
13) What are you planning on reading next?
I have borrowed all of Delicious in Dungeon and am very excited to start them! Also the next books I have to read for my book clubs are Marlo by Jay Carmichael, which I'd better get onto as it is in less than 2 weeks, and Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H, which was one of the ones I put on the list myself and am very excited to read (I previously started it and got too busy to finish it but was rly enjoying it so keen to get further), but I actually still have over a month for that one since I can't make this month's meeting for that book club.
As for a shelfie... well here is a photo of all the plant reference books in my desk drawer for quick reference while working (though there's really only 4 I use very often, plus the australian standards on the side there):
Tagging (with ZERO pressure or obligation): @thesleepybabesclub @depthchargeforcutie @petricorrosion @andilovethisnovemberlife @dogelectedmayor @aesterea @commander-diomika @auntytim @zinjanthropusboisei @red-thorn

Writing Patterns
Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Thanks to @tavina-writes for tagging me!
Emiko is out with Judy and Courtney when it happens. [it's not what you've lost, but it's what you find] DC Comics, gen, Mia Dearden & Emiko Queen adventure fic.
There's something wrong with Luke. [a steady flame] Star Wars, gen, Owen Lars & Luke Skywalker outside POV time travel ficlet.
Xanthe exited Mr. Nyugen’s store, tucking the paper gold the for the Jade Court into the scroll case at their hip, alongside all their own weapons and tools and an assortment of other paper items— a guzheng, a writing set, a skateboard— for their other clients. [march of death, pulse of life] DC Comics, gen, Xanthe Zhou slice of life. Written for Yuletide 2023.
“Let me see your arm,” Nicky says. [say you'll remember me] The Old Guard, Nile/Andy post-movie get together fic. Written for Femslashex 2023.
Amidala’s Handmaidens [Secure Server] - 25-7-01 AFE [In Memoriam] Star Wars, Padme & her handmaidens, epistolary & memoir & worldbuilding. Written for Fic in a Box 2023.
Dinah fumbled with the keypad to the clocktower. [I Could Close the Curtains (But This is Too Much Fun)] DC Comics, Dinah Lance/Zatanna Zatara, PWP.
Ben wakes up. [Try, Try Again] Star Wars, Ben Solo, post-canon AU ficlet.
They find a little café in Brisbane, after they've dealt with the maw-mouth and cleaned themselves up. [devil's in the details] Scholomance, El/Orion, post-canon ficlet.
Mia is still in her room when Ollie gets home. [aftershocks] DC Comics, Mia Dearden & Connor Hawke & Oliver Queen, missing scene.
Ollie tells Connor to take her home, after. [fault lines] DC Comics, Mia Dearden & Oliver Queen, missing scene.
I don't know if I have any particular pattern! I like to jump in as close to the action as possible, so my first sentence tends to be setting the scene and catching the reader up on where we are. I'm actually surprised there weren't more that opened with dialogue; I feel like I do that a lot.
I don't know who's already been tagged for this, so if you haven't been tagged yet and want to do it, consider yourself tagged. <3

The Casual sexism in the Wednesday Hate
There is a large faction of people who react negatively the moment something appeals to teenage girls. I'm not saying Twilight is great literature (not by a long shot) but you see it a lot with the Twilight hate. half the things they hate about it contradict themselves. For example: "Edward doesn't act like a vampire!" immediately followed by "He watches Bella sleep. It's creepy." Yes, vampires tend to do that. Do you know how many depictions of Dracula and Barnabas Collins do that? Angel in Buffy did that, no one made a fuss. Or how about "Edward's too old for her!" Yeah, I will reference you back to Angel from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Also even the romantic depictions of Dracula. He's five hundred years old and Mina is usually depicted between the ages of seventeen to twenty-one at the oldest. Again, I'm not saying Twilight is any good. Hell, I hate that when wounded they crack or shatter like porcelain plates. But when you start to notice the contrary complaints you start to realize it's not even really about the content. It's because it's something popular among teenage girls so that "Must mean it's bad!" Getting back to Wednesday, Most of the complaints are strawman at best. Either saying things like "Wednesday wouldn't do that!" (with the Piranha). The Hell she wouldn't! Or "Wednesday wouldn't defend Pugsley from bullies. She'd join in." Someone ACTUALLY said that to me! There are DECADES of depictions of Wednesday taking on bullies who go after Pugsley because "No one hurts Pugsley but me." That's actually an old line. It's not new. Even Cain has said it in regard to Abel in at least one of The Sandman spin-off comics. Or "They made it woke. Wednesday was never woke!" clearly that one has never seen Addams Family Values or the Thanksgiving Pageant. Or "There was never anything supernatural about the Addamses." Yeah, uh, huh. How many times are we told Grandmama and Aunt Ophelia are witches? And about about Thing and Lurch and Cousin it? Or how about the fact that Uncle Fester has controlled electricity since the 60s? Or It's from Tim Burton. He hasn't do anything good in years. No. He hasn't. But this was actually really good. This was the best thing he's done since 2005's Corpse Bride. Or even the self-righteous "It's racist because the black characters are antagonists." Once you point out they're really not you get a "Yeah, but it looked like they'd be antagonists and that's problematic in and of itself. Meanwhile it's a who-done-it. And everyone looked antagonistic in the first episodes, even Gomez! Or the other self-righteous "It isn't queer enough!" Eugene has two mothers and Enid's mother wanted to send her to "conversion therapy camp." It wasn't overtly gay but it's a gay metaphor. And there will probably be openly gay kids. There's a lot that hasn't been explored yet. So far we've only seen two characters struggling with romances. Give it time. Someone commented about Wednesday and how unrealistic it is for girls to fight each other for popularity or over boys. Umm...That's not in there... At all... No one fights each other over boys in this. There's no competing for a boy's affection. And the only time Wednesday fights the popular girl it's a duel in the Fencing class. The popular girl is actually nice and saves her classmates in the final episode. And of course "It's just a rip off of Harry Potter." or "Riverdale" or "Sabrina" and pretty much the only similarity is "There's a school! And Supernatural stuff!" Yes, The Worst Witch beat you to it, and even Dracula made reference to Scholomance, a mythical magick school in Eastern Europe. It's okay to dislike Wednesday. But I think some of the hate is nothing more than "Eww, teenage girls like it so it must be bad." or you assume it's only for teenage girls, never mind that Tim Burton's work has always transcended demographics.
