“They that would wrest that standard from his hand, must first wrest his soul from his body.” A Parliamentarian trooper gallops away, pursued by a Royalist cavalryman, after capturing one of the infantry standards of the Marquis of Newcastle’s Regiment of Foote at The Battle of Marston Moor. . The standard, or ‘colours’, was the responsibility of an officer with the rank of ensign, a junior officer equivalent to a second lieutenant today, and each company within a regiment would have one. The flag was a powerful symbol of prestige and its loss was the worst possible disgrace - they were therefore defended with all possible effort and their capture was the best indication of the seriousness of a defeat. . One hundred Royalist regimental colours were captured at Marston Moor, including eleven described as "red with white crosses" that belonged to Newcastle's regiment. Piet Oudolf “I like to escape some of the rules around gardening – to provide thought and spontaneity, and pleasure.” - Piet Oudolf, Landscape Maven. In the 1980s Piet Oudolf, along with his wife, Anja, started a nursery. This was in part to support Oudolf’s design studio at their home in Hummelo, a tiny village in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Here they experimented with a wide range of perennials, looking for robustness, but also beauty in decay. How a plant looks before and after flowering, whether their seed heads withstood winter, what sort of management they would need and how they would compete with their bedfellows. Garden enthusiasts and designers from around the world flocked to buy plants and see his naturalistic plant combinations at work. Now in his 70s, Oudolf shows no sign of slowing down. He’s even tackled food-growing - creating an edible meadow around ‘Noma’s’ restaurant in Denmark. ‘Noma’s’ Bjarke Ingels-designed campus encompass’ 11 buildings and 2,100 square feet of garden designed by Oudolf. Near the entrance to ‘Noma’s' property are three free-standing greenhouses constructed almost entirely of glass. Two of the greenhouses grow ingredients like microgreens, herbs and edible flowers. The other houses the restaurant’s bakery and test kitchen.
