Sauter-Finegan Orchestra – Concert Jazz
The Sauter-Finegan Orchestra was an American swing jazz band popular in the 1950s.
The orchestra was led by Eddie Sauter and Bill Finegan, who were both experienced big band arrangers. Sauter played mellophone, trumpet, and drums, and had attended Columbia University and Juilliard; Finegan had studied at the Paris Conservatory. They began recording together in 1952, using inventive arrangements that made use of a variety of unusual instruments, including many orchestral instruments as well as oddities like the kazoo and the beaten human chest.

Eddie Sauter, c. 1960
Edward (“Eddie”) Sauter spent most of his life in Rockland County near Nyack, where many of his innovative compositions and arrangements were created. The unique point of view which he brought to music was deeply influenced by his love of the natural beauty and rich history of the county as expressed in the compositions “Doodletown Fifers" and “High Tor”, which conveyed his sure sense of history as did his arrangements for the hit musi¬cal “1776.
Always ready for a stroll along the street in his neighborhood or a hike in the woods, his favorite relaxation, he participated in recent research in tracing the old colonial Kings Highway by walking its entire length from New Jersey to Orange County.
While still in Nyack high school (in the 1920's) Mr. Sauter was foremost among the young people in Rockland County who were experimenting in the exciting new big-band jazz sound emerging throughout the land. Playing drums and trumpet, writing for small groups wasn't enough challenge for his imaginative mind so he started his own dance band, which performed at prom and club dates.
He attended Columbia University and studied musical theory at the Julliard swing arrangements and original compositions such as “Superman”, “Benny Rides Again"; and “Clarinet a la King" helped lead the band to its commanding piano player, split off to form his own band with singer-wife Mildred Bailey, and Sauter joined him —playing trumpet and arranging in the subtle swing style that soon brought him into national prominence. John Hammond, then scouting for Benny Goodman, recruited him for that band, where his distinctive swing arrangements and original compositions such as "Superman”, Benny Rides Again; and "Clarinet a la King" helped lead the band to its commanding position in the late 1930’s and early 1940's.
Mr. Sauter’s career included writing for Ray McKinley, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Bob Crosby and numerous other big bands. His original pieces for Ray McKinley, which included "Tumblebug”, "Hangover Square”, “Sandstorm" and "Borderline”, are considered landmarks in the evolution of the so-called “Jazz” compositions.
In 1952 he joined with arranger Bill Finegan to form the Sauter-Finegan orchestra, the most original concept of concert jazz music of the post-war era. While this was a most satisfying period of Mr. Sauter's career in allowing his versatility full range, the economics of supporting such a large orchestra forced it to disband after five years.
Following a two-year sojourn (1957-59) as staff musical director at Sudwest-funk Radio, Baden Baden, Germany, his later years were devoted to his in¬creasing interest in and study of classical music while, at the same time, earning a livelihood orchestrating Broadway musicals, films and T.V. shows.
Among his original compositions of this period was an album entitled, “Focus”, which combined a string orchestra with Stan Getz as tenor saxophone soloist —a widely acclaimed suite approaching new frontiers in the history of jazz. His “Tanglewood Concerto”, also featuring Stan Getz on tenor sax, was performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra at Tanglewood. His orchestral arrangements of Christmas carols for another album, “The Joy of Christmas”, brought together the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Leonard Bernstein.
Always known as “a musician’s musician”, and “ten years ahead of his time”, Mr. Sauter was highly regarded throughout the musical world, having occupied a unique place in the golden age of jazz and big band music. — John Scott, 1981

Colder and a bit of snow.
Later. A perfectly miserable trip out to Brooklyn on the Number Two train. The worst of rush hour. Am thinking of how easy the trip back will be. Thinking too of the people who have to endure this crush every working day.
The rehearsal is supposed to start at 7:30. The conductor says some people are missing because of trouble with the trains. Alas, when you are working for less than "scale" it can become customary to start late. This then becomes habit as if it generally thought that a 7:30 rehearsal means you don't have to arrive until 7:30.
The oboe gives an "A" at 7:40.
The rehearsal goes pretty much without incident. Something I haven't heard in decades: the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn jazzy "Nutcracker." Funny names for the movements, like "Peanut Brittle Brigade," "Sugar Rum Cherry"...oh, please... Oh, it does go on... I think it would be better if it were accompanied by an animated film. Or...for the concert there may be dancers. You know, jitterbugging and that sort of thing.
Note: I think I have gotten this piece mixed up with an older version of a jazzy "Nutcracker" by the Sauter Finegan orchestra. From way back.
David C gives me a ride back to my neighborhood. As it turns out we worked for many of the same people. For example, Jimmy Roselli (the "other" singer from Hoboken). Funny stories about him, though he could never be described as a funny man. Oh, God no.

I learn that a Barnard School freshman from Charlottesville was murdered near Morningside Park. Perhaps a robbery gone wrong. (One school of thought: give the mugger or muggers what they want and escape with your life.) I thought it was inside the park but now think it was next to it, on Morningside Drive. It is a beautiful, picturesque park, but, I have always thought, better to look at from afar than have to be in.
Poor girl. Played in a rock band. Had green hair. Poor child.
Impeachment proceedings. We know how it will end. Censure, maybe, not removal from office. Trump will do a victory lap. There will be much gloating followed by getting even.
I try to watch a bit of Martin Scorsese's (much talked about) "The Irishman." All star cast. Beautifully filmed and an awful bore and therefore difficult to concentrate much on it. The Jimmy Hoffa story. There is no score, just recorded tunes from the era. Johnny Rae singing "Cry." Santo and Johnny "Sleepwalk." "Al de la"..."In the Still of the Night"..."I Hear You Knocking"...The list goes on. As unhandy as I am at this sort of thing I tried streaming it. It is a skill I am slow to catch onto.

April in Paris
The term April in Paris originated with the Broadway song.
The song was composed in 1932, by Vernon Duke {music} and E. Y. Harbug {lyrics}. April in Paris first premiered in that year’s play, Walk a Little Faster.
The following year, Freddy Martin recorded the song.
Almost two decades later, the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra, recorded the song in 1952. This version placed in the Cashbox Top…
