Of all the objects in her art-strewn home, Nina took a sense of reassurance from her own history. Yet this framed photograph of a young woman who could not have been more than nineteen or twenty when it was taken continued to exert a hypnotic effect on her, and she began to feel that it was not a one-way street. It felt like a case of the watcher being watched. The resolute expression on the face of the young woman was astounding for its time period. This apple-cheeked beauty with jet-black eyebrows, which slashed her forehead and created a border for her eyes that blazed with an unspoken fury, made her stare back, resolute with an emotion. She used her eyes like an X-ray machine. Nina wanted to get inside this face and touch its real history.

Languor Part 1(Rupert and Henry)

A/N: This is going to be a sad one-shot and I mean sad.

Warning: Suicidal thoughts, and just sad things in general.

Rupert was coughing into the toilet.

Rupert woke up feeling like he was going to throw up a lung, he quickly went got up and went to his bathroom. He coughed and then threw up. He lifted his head and wiped his mouth. He looked at his hand to find blood on it, he gasped as he look inside the toilet.

He saw the crimson substance in the toilet.

He sat up and leaned against the wall, he sighed heavily as his vision blurred with tears. He started crying as he coughed up more blood, he put a hand to his head as a headache brewing in his head.  

He hated this, and he wanted to end it.

He has been sick for years and every year the illness gets worse, he was diagnosed with a terminal illness before he joined the Government, and no one knows about his illness. Not Charles, not Captain Victoria, even the General doesn't know about it, and he would like to keep it that way.

He sighed in sadness as he stopped coughing, he ceased his sobbing. His golden glassy eyes stared at the blood that was still on his hand, he kept looking at the blood as his mind played him what the doctor told him the last time he went to the doctor.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Price," the doctor told him, "You don't have much time."

Rupert got up and cleaned up. After he was done, he went back to bed because it was 3 in the morning.

When Rupert got up at 6:00, he showered and left his apartment.

He had his head down as he walked to the base, he ignored everything around him as he thought over his life. He thought about his childhood, his parents, his friends, etc. He also thought about how he felt when first told about his illness. He felt angry, sad, confused, and weird.

He got to the base and ignored everyone who said hi to him, they shrugged and went about their day. They got used to Rupert ignoring them or acting grumpy. Rupert has a reputation on the base as an excellent captain but with a prickly character. But can you blame him? He didn't have a great childhood and people didn't treat him well as he grew up.

Rupert passed Jose Gonzales, Howard Lipton, Hank Stockman, Hyden Brock, June July, and Sarah Conifers.

Rupert passed by Charles Calvin, the greatest pilot and one of the few people he can stand. However, two people were talking to him that he despises the most. Henry Stickmin and Ellie Rose were former criminals who got pardoned by the General. They were trapped at the notorious prison The Wall that was in Canada, and they escaped.

They were rescued by Charles and they became the Triple Threat.

Rupert didn't like them, not one bit. Henry was the bane of his existence and for good reasons, Henry was the one who got Dave fired and escaped. He also accidentally murdered his mentor and friend, Johnny Panzer.

Henry left his criminal past and tried to apologize to Rupert but Rupert refused to listen.

Rupert and Henry would fight like cats and dogs or in some of the soldiers' eyes, like a married couple. The soldiers who thought they fought like a married couple didn't vocally admit it because they don't want to face Rupert's wrath.  

Rupert headed toward the cafeteria to get something to eat.

He got his food and sat down at an empty table. He ate in silence as the people watched. He likes to people watch, it gives him to be on his toes or see what kind of person they are. He saw the soldiers he passed by earlier inside the cafeteria getting food, he kept eating until he saw Henry with Charles and Ellie. He put down the fork as he crossed his arms in annoyance.

Great.

He lost his appetite.

Henry was laughing at a joke Charles made when he felt a pair of eyes looking at him, he turned around and looked around the cafeteria. He found most of the soldiers were eating but his gaze landed on an annoyed Rupert Price who had his arms crossed. He frowned as he turned back to the duo, he sighed as he got his food and followed Charles and Ellie to a table.

Charles and Ellie ate their food as they talked while Henry stayed quiet. Henry wasn't much of a talker and he prefer to stay silent. He ate his food but couldn't enjoy it since he could feel Rupert staring at him and, if possible, burning holes through him. Henry put his fork down, put his elbow on the table, and put his head on his hand. He blew out a puff in annoyance.

Charles noticed Henry's mood change, and so did Ellie.

"Hey, Hen?" Charles asked in concern, "What's wrong?"

"Rupert's glaring at me again," Henry answered.

Ellie and Charles looked behind Henry and saw he was right. They would be millionaires if they had a dollar for every time they saw Rupert glaring at Henry. They turned back to Henry who was looking at them, "Oh..." they both said in unison.

Henry nodded sadly as he stared down at his food.

Henry knew he caused so many people grief and Rupert was no exception. He cannot count how many times he apologized to Rupert for what he did but Rupert wouldn't listen to him. Henry gave up after the 100th time, Rupert was stubborn as a mule, and it was exhausting to Henry because he felt like he was talking to a brick wall.

"Hey, don't feel bad," Charles reassured Henry, "He will forgive you someday, he can't stay mad forever."

"If he does forgive me, Hell will freeze over," Henry responded under his breath.

Henry went back to eating as he ignored Rupert's glare and the looks of worry from his friends. Rupert went back to eating, still looking at Henry. He zoned out as he ate, he almost finished his food when he felt his chest hurt. He nearly choked on his food as he felt his lungs were about to blow up, he coughed into his napkin. He gasped when he saw blood on the napkin, and he coughed some more.

Crap.

His illness was acting up and he was in public.

He looked around to see if anybody was looking at him but no one was paying attention to him, however, he started coughing again. He tasted metal and concluded he needed to get out of there. He quickly stood up and ran out of the cafeteria without cleaning his mess. Some of the soldiers saw him leave but they thought nothing of it, but someone else thought it was not nothing...

Henry saw Rupert leave the cafeteria and he looked concerned.

Rupert went to the clearing to get away from everyone, he kept coughing and then he threw up blood. Rupert stared at the blood as he gasped in air, his vision blurred with tears as he sobbed. He leaned against a rock as he kept sobbing, he buried his face into his arms.

"Why? Why? Why me? How come I have to suffer?" he thought sadly, "I hate this! Why can't you kill me already?!"

Then a dark thought came into his mind, he lifted his head, and his face was blank. His eyes were dull like they have no life in them, "No one will miss you," his mind told him, "You deserve this punishment... It will be better if you kill yourself..."

Rupert's face went dark as he got out his pocket knife, he unsheathed the blade and stared at it. The blade was sparkling in the sunlight, he saw his reflection in the blade, and he wanted to cry again. His heart shriveled up and it felt like it was fighting to keep beating. Rupert coughed again and dropped the knife. He covered his mouth as blood was coming out of his mouth, his vision was filling up with black dots, and he felt himself losing consciousness.

He fell on his side as he saw a blue jacket coming toward him, he also saw a pair of sapphire blue eyes, and then he passed out.

A couple of hours later, Rupert woke up on a couch.

Rupert shifted and open his eyes, he rubbed his eyes as he sat up. He groaned in pain because he has a headache, he blinked in confusion as he looked around, he was not at the medical bay or his tent. He was at someone's apartment.

He looked in front of him and saw a coffee table, the coffee table had a remote, a book, and a mug filled with tea. Rupert picked up the mug and was surprised it was hot. He sniffed the tea to see if it smelled good crinkled his nose, and drank the tea. The tea tasted bad at first but there was a good aftertaste drank the tea when he heard footsteps.

He put down the mug and became alert, the footsteps came closer until the person came into Rupert's view.

Rupert's eyes widened when he saw Henry Stickmin carrying a mini table, Henry set the mini table down on the coffee table. Rupert noticed the contents on the mini table, there was a bowl of soup and bread for Rupert to eat. Rupert sniffed the soup as Henry gave him a spoon and a napkin.

The soup smelled good, Rupert took the spoon and ate some of the soup. Rupert made a sound that means good, the soup was delicious. Henry watched Rupert eat the soup he made, Rupert was so busy with the soup that he almost forgot Henry was there. Rupert looked up from his soup to find Henry staring at him blankly, Rupert put down the spoon and cleared his throat.

"So... uh... did you make this?" Rupert asked, avoiding meeting Henry's eyes.

"Yes," Henry replied with a frown on his face.

Rupert blinked in surprise, he didn't know Henry can cook. Then again, he doesn't know anything about Henry because all he knew Henry is just a lowly criminal. Rupert resume eating the soup, however, there was one thing that was bothering him.

Why is he here?

"Why am I here?" Rupert asked as he finished the soup.

Henry stared at him for a moment, he then sighed. "Well, I was watching you eat then you were coughing, and you ran out of the cafeteria,"

Rupert blinked, "I followed you and you were on the ground, passed out," Henry kept explaining, "I didn't know what to do when I saw blood... Your blood..."

Henry rubbed his arm awkwardly, and Rupert's face went red. A million questions were on his mind, and none of them weren't exactly good questions.

"So... What's wrong with you?" Henry asked quietly.

Rupert was hesitant to tell Henry about his illness because it's none of his business, and two, he doesn't want anyone to find out about his illness.

"Look, I get it you want to help and all," Rupert replied angrily, "But it's none of your business!"

Henry's eyes widened in surprise at Rupert's outburst but quickly replace the surprise with anger, "Hey, I saved you and trying to help you recover,"

Rupert scoffed as he looked away, Rupert finished his soup as Henry went over to him. Henry grabbed the bowl and went to the kitchen. Rupert was still hungry and ate some of the bread. Henry came back with more soup, Rupert looked down at the soup.

"If you're wondering what kind of soup it is, it's chicken noodle soup," Henry said lowly, he stepped out of the kitchen and to his room real quick. Rupert stared down at the soup, he was still wondering why Henry is helping him.

Henry came back with a blanket and a pillow, and he put them on the couch. Rupert glanced at the pillow and blanket in confusion.

"You're going to be staying here for tonight, and don't argue with me," Henry stated firmly in an authoritative tone, "And don't bite the hand that feeds you."

Rupert was about to protest but stopped himself, "Fine," he mumbled.

Henry nodded, "If you need anything, I'm going to be in my room,"

Henry started heading toward his bedroom, but he stopped and faced Rupert.

"Good night, Rupert," Henry said quietly, "And drink the tea."

Henry left Rupert alone to ponder his thoughts.
