The Eternal Wisdom of Sappho
BY KIRSTY STONELL WALKER
According to the Ancient Greek poet Alcaeus of Mytilene, “No man sings like a Lesbian singer.” A very progressive statement for 600 B.C., but he was actually speaking of the magic and beauty of the lyric poets of the island of Lesbos and, more particularly, of his contemporary Sappho. Possibly the most heralded singer-songwriter of pre-Christian times, Sappho is mainly remembered today for her love of the ladies, as so little of her poetry survives. Yet for a woman who literally gave her name to a euphemism for female gayness, she wrote an awful lot of lust poems about men as well and even apparently threw herself off a cliff because a man didn’t love her. All this complication leads me to Sappho’s unexpected heyday, the 19th century, where this magical Greek poet by necessity became all these things and more.
Let’s start with who Sappho was. As someone who lived around six hundred years before Christ, she didn’t leave a lot of personal information, but we know that she wrote lyric poetry that was intended to be sung with accompanying music and that her work was so popular that she was christened the “Tenth Muse.” Much of what we know about Sappho is inferred from her poems, as the earliest biography of her wasn’t written until nearly 800 years after her death. Most of her poetry is now lost, however, with only fragments....

Dearest friend, it appears that I am in dire need of a most terrible poem about someone.
Thou see, I was exiled at some point by this creature man named Pitacos. He seeks to torment me once more, but I will not have it.
So I ask you, dear Pear-Shaker, if thou could put thine pen to paper and write a most insulting poem about Pitacos.
You shall have my graces and the blessing of the Gods.
- @sappho-official-account
He what now?!
THAT STUPID PITA TACO MAN CAN SHOVE STICKS UP HIS ASS THEN EXILE HIMSELF AND NEVER COME BACK
HE’LL STEW IN HIS OWN MUCH-DESERVED DESPAIR WHILE YOU’RE HAVING THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE SOMEWHERE
ONE OF THESE DAYS, HE’LL WAKE UP AND FIND THAT I GLUED POISONOUS SPIDERS TO HIS IDIOTIC BEHIND
AND WHEN HE WADDLES OFF SCREAMING TO WHO KNOWS WHAT I’ll be laughing off-stage and writing yuri with ya! :3

Women in art - history series (damn time ago, but not so long)
Egypt
Women in Egypt had legal equality back to 2750 BCE and could own property, sign documents, and leave their property to whoever they wanted. As a fully legal people, Egyptian women had more rights than women in the US in the '50. They wove baskets, ground up rock for paint, and were even boat pilots.
For example, in ancient Egypt, women were responsible for creating detailed gold and silver jewelry, often buried with the dead as a form of wealth and status.
Greece
The Greek society was quite patriarchal, where men held most of the power, and women were restricted to the domestic sphere. Nonetheless, some women challenged these societal conventions and made noteworthy contributions to the art world. Despite their limited opportunities, these women defied societal norms and left a significant impact on the world of art.
Sappho
I bet probably most of us know the great Sappho, the mother of lesbians. She was a poet, who lived during the 6th century BCE. Her lyric poetry, which was characterized by its emotional depth and romantic themes of love and desire.
Myrtis
She was also an extraordinary poet living in 5th century BCE Greece. Her poetic prowess was exceptional, and she was highly regarded for her elegies and epigrams. Typically, her compositions were dedicated to honoring the deceased, and their quality was widely admired by those who knew her.
Other female artists of the time
Timarete (or Thamyris) (5th C. BCE)
Irene (5th century BCE)
Phryne (4th century BCE)
Aristarete (6th century BCE)
Eirene (6th century BCE)
Iaia of Cyzicus (116-27 BCE)
Helena of Egypt (probably 4th century BCE)
These artists were painters or sculpters.

OKAY! So is there anyone else who really wants to see Saphho in Hades 2. I loved Hades and the journey we took with Zagreus as narrated by Homer. Sappho would be a great addition I think. She would be a great stand in place for Orpheus or Homer.

Sibilla Aleramo
The piece of media that originally inspired me to research Sibilla Aleramo was the book After Saphho, which discusses mainly 18th century lesbians and their relationships to classical texts.
Sibilla was raped when she was 15, and when her family found out, they compelled her to marry her rapist. She had her only child, whose name was Walter. Aleramo moved to Rome when her husband got dangerously abusive, leaving her son behind. He was six at the time.
The main queer relationship in her life was between herself and Lina Polleti. She met Polleti in Rome, after getting involved in the artistic and feminist scenes of the time.
Some of her greatest accomplishments are the writing of the novel A woman, and is one of the most important texts to understanding Italian feminism. She died in 1960, having been part of a wonderful group of queer poets and playwrights.

Ok this post is covering the symbolism of the flowers in the area around my OC's Carnation and Viridian in the pride art piece i posted. (Check it out)
The flowers in this section are Jonny Jump Ups (a type of violet). I used violets in this area because violets are a symbol sapphic love. This is due to the Greek poet Saphho of the isle Lesbos and her poetry centered around WLW relationships and often depicted wearing garlands of voilets and other plants. Violets have been used as a symbol for many sapphic people and relationships ever since and are still used today whether it be in art, flower arrangements, merchandise or tattoos.
I encourage you to learn a bit about symbolism in LGBTQIA history yourself because I am not writing everything on this topic.
Flowers and Saphho depicted below.

If you're sad that a work of art wasn't finished, use that as inspiration to make your own work. Fanart, fanfiction, midrash, retellings, serial number filed off original derivative works, original works inspired by others, just as long as it's yours (with inspiration credited properly where appropriate). Search your soul for what exactly bothers you or feels unfinished or wanting. Zero into the source of that lack and bring forth into the world the thing that you wish existed. Just like creators have always been doing forever.
Fill in Saphho's missing lines by writing some yourself. Write your version of on Love's Labours Won. Rhyme your own quests into the Faerie Queen. Sculpt a thousand faces for Winged Victory. Paint full color versions of Da Vinci's sketches and underpaintings. Outline a fanfic about how you think Firefly should have continued. Make it messy and imperfect and flawed and maybe you don't even finish it yourself and someone else picks up the torch, but still make it.
Just do it with your own human heart instead of telling a juiced up autocorrect to use its repository of stolen art to spit out something heartless just to write your own name on someone else's grave.
Rage. In my heart. All-consuming. FUCK AI.
