Propaganda for Sanji x Luffy:

I don't think anyone is gonna bother denying the fact that WCI is literally just the plot of an otome isekai shoujo manga/manhwa. MC (main character) is treated like trash by family except for the 1 dead mom and 1 nice sympathetic supporter that can't do much of anything to help. MC escapes only to find themselves in an even worse situation somewhat of their own making, only to be swept off their feet by the ML (male lead) and saved, full damsel in distress style. Dramatic love confessions, crying in the rain, betrayal from an arranged marriage, it has it all.

Dude Luffy loves Sanji so so much like WCI is the best example and like you don't even really need to see the love as romantic if that bugs you but dudes. The first words out of the Luffys Shadow Possessed Oars was yelling for Sanji. He just loves Sanji so much and Sanji loves him too

The WCI arc in itself is mega SanLu propaganda. Luffy invaded an emperor’s territory, completely crashed a wedding, went up against Sanji’s evil science family, and got nearly beat to death by Sanji himself all in order to get Sanji back. Sanji offered his life to Kuma at thriller bark so Kuma wouldn’t kill Luffy. He pushed himself for 2 years all in order to get stronger FOR Luffy. Sanji feels sorry when he isn’t useful, the whole reason why he used the raid suit those few times was because he was thinking about getting stronger for Luffy, but realized that he didn’t want to become an emotionless monster like his family. Sanji broke down in tears at WCI when he tried to get Luffy to go away by fighting him. And then broke down in tears again when he ran back to Luffy and told him he wanted to go back home to the Sunny. No matter what Sanji cooks, Luffy always likes it and is proud to have him in his crew. Sanji is also one of Luffy’s “wings”, as stated by Robin! They’re both just so sweet and clearly care very deeply about each other.

Luffy saving Sanji on whole cake island got to me

[Insert everything that happens between them during WCI] how could I see luffy yelling about how he won't eat anything and will starve- LUFFY OF ALL PEOPLE- unless Sanji comes back and not ship them at LEAST a little. "Without you I can't become the pirate king" absolutely devastating cinema. Then Sanji laying out everything, in tears, and Luffy accepting it all and just saying, "well that's who you are" poetic. Final wci thing: luffy hearing judges bs about sanji and going "whyd he start listing all your good point" true love. This seems one sided but Sanji is also just as bad. "Which version of me do you prefer" anyone? They care SO MUCH about each other. Also Luffy loves to eat, Sanji loves to feed people, they're meant to be.

*gestures at the entirety of WCI* I mean that’s Love, they are Ride or Die, Luffy cannot become the pirate king without Sanji, whether that means physically because he needs Sanji’s support or just because being the pirate king means Luffy has everything he wants and what he wants is Sanji or both. And Sanji loves him just as much back! He’s his sun he’s his world…Luffy jump and Sanji’s too busy skywalking to bother asking how high. I just love them sm

My fav somewhat rare pair. I specifically love on skypiea when Sanji sacrifices himself to save Usopp from Enel. (And of course the scene when they wake up from their injuries holding hands!!!!)

Sailors were a notoriously superstitious folk. Sometimes the ships cooks were the worst of the lot in that regard. Growing up Sanji had heard his fair share of ghost stories- of siren spirits who called sailors to watery deaths, haunted ships crewed by the damned, skeletons of the drowned who would reach up and tickle your feet if you swam too deep, and no place garnered more supernatural tales than The Grand Line.

But who could blame men at sea for making up stories? After all, midnight on a night’s watch on a ship at sea could be a spooky time. The sounds of the boat creaking, the wind whipping the sails, the moon casting an eerie glow on a darkened sea… was enough to send a shiver up anyone’s spine.

Maybe that was one reason why Usopp made Sanji keep him company when he got stuck with the midnight watch on the Sunny and there was a full moon out. Only one of the reasons because Usopp and Sanji liked to spend their night watches together for another reason as well.

The moon that night kept being obscured by clouds passing over it and it was a foggy night- mist creeping over the water and shrouding the sides of the deck. The weather had gotten brisk after sunset, coming out of the range of an autumn isle, but Usopp already had Sanji’s jacket draped around his shoulders, and Sanji’s arms pulled tight around him were warm and comforting. The tea Sanji had brought out for them had already stopped steaming but Usopp could barely feel the wind the way they were huddled together on the grass lawn of the ship with a shared blanket wrapped over them.

The red light at the end of Sanji’s lit cigarette guided Usopp to the approximate location of the cook’s mouth in the darkness so he could press kisses against it. Under the blanket it was hard to tell where Usopp’s body ended and Sanji’s began but they both knew the clothes were in the way- Usopp’s hand fumbled against Sanji’s belt buckle, Sanji deepened the kiss as he traced patterns with his fingers against Usopp’s collarbone before working the strap of his overalls off one shoulder. Their breath was warm and urgent between their mouths by the time Usopp had arranged himself mostly on Sanji’s lap and Sanji had his arms around his waist.

Usopp had finished undoing Sanji’s belt when he abruptly froze and looked around. Sanji made a little grunt of complaint, canting his hips up needily.

“Why’d you stop?” Sanji whined.

“Shhh! I thought…” Usopp’s voice came back as an urgent whisper. “I just felt for a second like… Like we were being watched…”

Sanji just offered him a very self-satisfied smirk. “Oh really? How kinky.”

Usopp smacked him lightly on the shoulder. “Shut up! I’m serious! What if there’s someone out here?!”

“Everyone else went to sleep.” Sanji said.

“No, I mean…” Usopp gulped loudly. “Not one of the crew… Don’t you ever get that feeling out on the sea at night..? That creepy feeling on the back of your neck? Like there’s someone or something… watching you?”

There was a scratch of sound as Sanji ignited a match, suddenly illuminating the space between them with the fire’s light. He held it up past Usopp’s scared face and peered out at the rest of the deck. The dim glow of the flame sent shadows dancing in every direction Sanji’s hand moved but no creature or crewmate was in sight.

“See? There’s nothing out there…” Sanji gave a menacing chuckle suddenly. “Well… Nothing living, that is…”

Usopp made a keening yelp and gripped Sanji’s arm. “Don’t joke around!”

Sanji laughed off his reaction and in a shake of his hand swiped the match’s light out, pitching them into darkness again.

“Relax.” Sanji reassured him, pulling him a little closer. “I’m here, aren’t I? If there’s a ghost I’d protect you.” He planted a smooch on Usopp’s cheek.

Even in the dark, Sanji didn’t have to see the sniper’s face to know he was blushing.

“Hey, I didn’t say I was scared.” Usopp huffed, pouting. “I once defeated a ghost princess and her army of spirits. If anything I should be the one protecting you.”

“Oh yeah? I feel much safer already.” Sanji chuckled. “Just curious- if you’re not scared, why are you still gripping me so tightly?”

“That’s just because… it’s cold tonight!” Usopp defended, nuzzling his face against Sanji’s neck.

Laughing, Sanji hauled him in for another kiss, longer and deeper this time and Usopp settled into Sanji’s comforting body heat, letting the cook trail his hands down his back and rest against his thighs. When they finally had to pull away for oxygen Sanji suggested, “It’s almost time for Brook’s shift to start. How about you go get the bed warmed up for me. I’m going to have a last smoke before going in.”

“Okay. But don’t get scared without me.” Usopp sing-songed, getting up and tugging the blanket around his shoulders as he left.

Sanji stood and walked to the edge of the deck, waiting until he heard the door close behind Usopp before getting his cigarettes out and lighting one. He took a leisurely first drag, not bothering to turn around and acknowledge the apparition in the corner of the deck that was watching him.

“So you’re still sticking around him, huh?” he finally said, blowing smoke out of the corner of his mouth. “Merry?”

Klabautermann were one of the legends that had been passed around the different ships’ kitchens Sanji had worked in as a child. Franky had told him once about a Klabautermann he’d seen on the Going Merry. But Sanji himself had never seen it, until the day he’d kissed Usopp for the first time. Then he’d begun to notice it- especially on full moon nights, sometimes just out of the corner of his eye, sometimes just as a feeling on his spine- an intuition that he wasn’t alone.

He finally turned to face the spirit, its’ form just barely distinct from the fog in the faint moonlight- a little sprite with a body outlined by mist and generating a dim glow on its own.

“Don’t worry. I’ll look after him.” Sanji said solemnly. “I promise.”

He couldn’t see if the swirl of fog that made up where the ghost’s head would be had much of a face but he felt that it smiled. And in the next exhale of smoke from Sanji’s cigarette, the Klabautermann disappeared, as if it had just been an illusion of the shadows or Sanji’s eyes playing tricks on him. Sanji shook his head, sighing and throwing the last remnants of his cigarette into the ocean before heading inside to join Usopp in bed.

For @blackusopp and anyone else taking an interest! Er, these are mostly pretty old because I haven't gone looking for fics as much in the last few years. My recs for Luffy/Usopp and Zoro/Usopp fics have already been posted. (See the tag "myficrecs" on my blog if you're curious.) There's a lot more than these out there, many of which I haven't read! Especially for Sanji/Usopp, which I think is probably the most popular Usopp ship overall.

(One might think from this list that I don't like Usopp/Kaya, but I do! It's just that I can't remember at the moment any particular fic with that pairing that really stayed with me.)

Turnabout Is Not Fair Play by spiderflower. Hard R. Before you click on this one, I should warn you that this is replete with Water 7 angst and does not end in happy fluff. Both characters are in a bad place here, especially Usopp, but Nami's not in the best state of mind either. They both do and say some pretty messed-up things. But it's well-written stuff if one is in the mood for dark-tinted angst.

Sanji/Usopp most definitely.

It's an Usopp ship. So usually that means I love it!

I genuinely do still think that pre-timeskip Sanji is one of the most well-rounded characters in One Piece. His flaws and strengths feel tangible and real, he's interesting and fun and vulnerable and great. He was one of the best characters in the series - and just like Usopp, he had a variety of interesting bonds with other characters both in the crew and outside it.

Usopp is not female so that cuts down on a lot of things that can be... at least complicated when it comes to Sanji ships, let's say, even pre-timeskip.

That being said, Sanji/Usopp still has room for plenty of interesting complexities, for instance in how they view masculinity!

They have a great variety of fun and touching moments together in canon! (Some of this is post-timeskip too!!)

"You will do what I can't do, and I will do what you can't." I love Sanji forever with all his many flaws for this great line and this moment. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️I put this as #6 but perhaps it should be #1!

This is my art piece for the OPReverseBang. My partner wasn’t able to finish in time so they will complete it when able.

Usopp has split personalities, his normal self and the other being Sogeking. When Sogeking is out he’s a ruthless sniper for a local mafia gang that finds humor in inflicting pain on others, including Usopp. During a fight Sogeking purposely injures Sanji then switches with Usopp right after.

Among the One Piece pairings I actively go out looking for fanart for now and then, which is a pretty small group, it seems to me that Sanji/Usopp which does get a steady adding of pics still tends to be fairly samey in approach. It seems rare not to see Suave Flirty Confident Sanji/Flustered Blushing Nervous Usopp. (Zoro/Usopp is similar but perhaps still not quite to that extent.) Which I guess is just another way to say it tends to attract rather Standard Seme/Uke type of pics? Obviously people should just draw whatever they like the most; I would just personally like a bit more variety. Like both of them being goofy dorks or Usopp taking care of/worrying over Sanji, for instance. (I absolutely do think that in an established relationship there could easily be times when Usopp would be more confident and flirty and Sanji more flustered, but I have a feeling I'm in a minority there...)
