Today I found out about an extremely grim adaption of a folk song, Jüdischer Todessang (Jewish Death Song), an adaption of Tsen Brider (you know, the famous upbeat Yiddish folksong with "Yidl mitn fidl/Moysche mit dem bas/shpillt zhe mir eyn lidl/oyfn mitn gas" as the refrain?) from Sachshausen. It's written in a very Deutchammerish Yiddish, and plays with the double meaning of 'gas' - 'street' in Yiddish, obviously different in German. The writer, a Jewish socialist from Poland named Martin Rosenberg, was killed in Auschwitz in 1942. I recommend listening to it. It would be much better if every European gentile constantly went around with a gnawing guilt over the Holocaust, and listening to it should help with that. There's a recording by a survivor of Sachshausen, Aleksandr Tytus Kylisiewicz, on a Smithsonian Folkways album that's easy to find.
