North of Zero (11/23)
Tags and the work in its entirety can be found here.
Winter gave way to spring. Snow still clung to the earth in shady patches, but all around them brown was losing the battle to green; weeds coming up from the wet ground in tender shoots, shaggy leaves unfurling from newly awoken trees.
Their cache of stores for the winter had been thoroughly depleted, William eating everything in sight. Like the awakening of spring, the boy was blossoming, too.
She had noticed in the last few weeks that his wrists were beginning to peek out from his cuffs and he’d already begun wearing an old pair of Mulder’s boots, having outgrown the ones he arrived in. His chest was filling out, becoming broader, and she’d passed by the bathroom last week and found William and Mulder crowded around the tiny pedestal sink, Mulder showing the boy how to shave with a straight razor.
The boy seemed content, coming out of his shell and talking and joking around with Mulder, helping around the house, slowly revealing more and more of himself to the two people who’d given him life. He was still reticent to use his powers in front of them, which Scully understood after Mulder had told her about what William had revealed on the ice, but she tried to be reassuring and confident around him, and every now and then he would reveal some of the more supernatural things he could do. Especially when Mulder was around.
The boy wasn't as easy with her, but then she wasn’t as easy with him. Her youth had been John Hughes movies and different navy bases. Singing along to hair bands with her sister in a rusty car with a missing cigarette lighter and rattly speakers. She stole cigarettes from her mother's purse and passed notes in history class.
William had been fending for himself in an increasing wilderness in a post apocalyptic world. There was no music (other than their poor attempts at singing), no school — no cigarettes— she wondered if he could remember a single movie. How do you raise a child in a world you barely understand? How do you raise a child whose experience is so much different than your own? While the sight of him always warmed something within her, at times she still felt like she could barely call him hers.
They had done well with fish and game over the winter, and it was time to unload their haul and replenish their supplies. They had set off two days prior for Jericho’s Keep, where a portly woman named Marlo Edgerton ran a farm that also served as their cooperative’s trading post. Will had been excited but tentative, and had told Mulder the night before, as they camped on the edge of the Green Lake watershed that he was reluctant to leave their valley.
Nevertheless, they were nearly out of food, and had packed up early, mounting the heavily-laden horses for the last leg of their journey to the Keep. The day was bright and dry and they’d made great time.
They crested the rise over the farm and Pumpkin bellowed out a neigh. After a moment they heard an echoing call from Gypsy, Marlo’s chestnut bay who was trotting around the small paddock outside of Marlo's barn, throwing his head back in excitement. The horses both began an eager canter in Gypsy's direction. Scully watched as William grabbed at the pommel on his saddle to keep his balance. He was getting better, but he was not a horseman yet.
Marlo emerged from the farm house swinging a tea towel over her shoulder and putting a hand up to shield her eyes from the day's glare. After a moment she waved, recognizing them, and headed for the dusty driveway adjacent to the paddock. She approached just as Mulder was swinging down out of the saddle. He shook Marlo's hand, nodding and saying her name once in greeting before holding out a hand to help Scully off the horse. It wasn’t necessary, but it was sweet.
"You found someone," Marlo said, nodding at William, who stayed in the saddle, fidgeting a bit, as she shook Scully's hand.
"Marlo, this is William," Scully said, smiling at William encouragingly. The boy jumped down smoothly. "William, this is Marlo Edgerton, she trades in dairy and eggs and some produce, and runs the cooperative."
"I trade in the stuff that's hard to kill," Marlo said, leaning back with her hands on her substantial hips and giving William a warm smile. "I'm good with animals, but I've got a brown thumb."
"Hello," said William shyly. Marlo looked at William assessingly, and then looked curiously at Mulder and Scully. Scully wondered if she was picking up on the resemblance. After a moment she huffed out a quiet "huh," and turned on her heel, leaving the others to follow her.
"You see anything on your way through?" Marlo asked as they all made their way toward the farm house. "Last trader that came here from the south said that there was significantly more ship activity in that vector."
"Maybe one or two more than usual," Scully said, shooting a look to William.
"Hmm," said Marlo thoughtfully.
Tisdale, Marlo's big, black Newfoundland mix came woofing up to the group with his tail wagging, sticking his nose into hands and crotches and making himself a general nuisance. Scully scratched the dog behind the ears and gave his big block of a head a gentle push.
William seemed to come alive a bit from the dog's attention, a smile cracking his face as he thumped Tisdale's flank. The dog leaned into his legs in bliss.
"Go on then, Tizzy," Marlo said, pointing off toward the barn. The dog barked joyfully once and then trotted off toward the south pasture. William watched him wistfully.
"He's not very bright, but he gets the job done," Marlo said. She narrowed her eyes at William. "You want to go with him? He'd love the company."
William nodded happily and followed the dog, who doubled back to lean into the boy’s legs again before they both took off cheerfully for the pasture.
Marlo watched, charmed, and then started up the steps to her house. "Where'd you find him?"
"He found us," Mulder said.
Marlo paused on the top step and turned to them.
"Ain't that something," she said. Scully was definitely picking up an undertone, but Marlo breezed through it and threw open the farmhouse door. "Come on in, then."
She saw them seated at the table in her kitchen and then leaned back and gave them a sly smile.
"Y'all want coffee?" she asked.
Mulder blanched. "You have coffee ?" he asked.
Marlo's smile grew. "Got it last week. Roasted up nice. You catch any extra fish out there at that cabin of yours?"
"I've got ten pounds of smoked walleye with your name on it," Mulder said.
Marlo slapped her hands together and stood.
"Either of you take cream?"
XxXxXxXxXxX
They shuffled into Marlo's cellar slowly, Mulder careful not to bang his head into the low ceiling. The space held the pungent tang of a dirt floor and goats milk, and always reminded Mulder, oddly, of a village pub he used to frequent outside of Oxford.
"I take it you'll be needing more than usual," Marlo said, zipping up the old Carhart jacket she kept on a hook by the door. The cellar was always colder than Mulder remembered. "Got that extra mouth to feed. And a teenaged one at that."
Scully nodded.
"We can bring you more game, more fish."
"I know you're good for it," Marlo said, "I'll spot you."
Mulder swung the pack of smoked meat and fish from his shoulders.
"You say he found you ?" Marlo asked, eyes narrowed.
“Yes,” Scully said, instantly closed off and on the edge of impolite.
Marlo looked at Scully for a long moment.
“I don’t mean nothing by it,” she finally said, “being inquisitive. But I trade just as much in information as I do in cheese and eggs.” At this she looked to Mulder. “I’ve heard some things,” she said, swinging her eyes to Scully.
“Marlo,” Mulder said, his voice just shy of a growl.
“None of that,” Marlo said sharply, as if she were disciplining a headstrong colt, “I hope you know me well enough by now. I trade. I don’t threaten.” Mulder gave her a micro nod, and she took a long minute before she went on, pulling down several cheeses from a shelf. She put them in a burlap sack and handed them over. “I’ve had some religious types come to trade lately…”
“How religious?” Scully asked.
“Which religious?” Mulder immediately followed.
“…the new kind,” said Marlo quite seriously. Mulder and Scully exchanged a look. “They say they been seeing things in the stars. Horseshit, mostly. Crazy talk. But they’re talking about working with the aliens, you see. Saying they been sent by God.”
“When was this?”
“Few weeks back. But it wasn’t just the one, Mulder. Arlo Meier says the same thing to me just last week. Met a whole band of ‘em traveling up from Beulah. Arlo said they weren’t right in the eyes.”
“How did he mean?” Scully asked, her voice low and clipped. She was worried. “What about their eyes?”
“He didn’t say. I assumed he meant they were-“ at this, Marlo made a ‘crazy’ gesture with her finger. “They were all headstrong talking about a prophecy.”
Mulder felt a pang of worry. “What was the prophecy?”
“Rapture-type shit,” Marlo said, “Someone who could either save the world or destroy it. They’re looking for people.”
“Who are they looking for?” Scully asked, her tone indicating she already knew.
Marlo looked at her for a moment, then answered, quoting: “A boy who followed a star. A man who grew crops in a barren field. A mother immortal.”
Mulder tried to swallow, but his mouth had gone dry.
“Now I never much believed in the virgin birth,” Marlo went on, “I knew too many Mary’s who pledged a vow of chastity out one side of her mouth and gave Horatio fellatio with the other.”
Mulder had to hold in a nervous snort.
“But it don’t matter what I believe, does it? These people are nuts. Carrying on about the new Holy Trinity.”
“How’s that?” Scully asked, her voice husky and dry.
“The Father,” Marlo went on, boring holes into Mulder with her eyes. “The Son,” with this, she popped her chin up to gesture at the open cellar door and then turned her intense gaze to Scully. “And the Holy Spirit.”
There was a tense silence and then a shadow fell across the doorway of the cellar. Mulder looked up to see William standing there. He couldn't see the boy's face, backlit as it was by the spring sun, but his posture was tense, and Mulder could hear Tisdale off in the distance, his barks echoing with an unfriendly tenor alerting danger.
"Will-" Mulder started to say when the boy ran down the steps and into the cold of the cellar itself.
"They're coming!" the boy said hoarsely, his voice cracking on the last word.
"Who's coming?" said Marlo, her voice and face all confusion.
"Ships," William said, "lots of them."
"Damn it!" Scully hissed from Mulder's elbow, "the blanket is out with the horses."
Mulder felt the sharp drop of adrenaline into his system. Rarely did ships come during the day, and they were nearly always alone -- scouting ships out on routine patrol. The low rumble started then, ten times more powerful than he'd ever felt, shaking the floor beneath them like a California temblor.
Marlo trotted up the steps of the cellar faster than her substantial figure should have allowed and pulled the rope that swung the cellar door shut, the door slamming just as one of the horses screamed in the field, its terrified whinny cut short with the slam of wood on wood.
"No time for it," Marlo said, and shuffled back down the steps, moving quickly to the back of the cellar where she had little rounds of goat cheese stacked on wooden shelves that went all the way up to the ceiling. "Come on," she said, pulling open a door that Mulder had never seen before, cut into the side of the wall next to the spare tin barrels in which she collected milk. "In here. Quickly!"
Mulder ushered Scully and William into the small, dark space and then followed himself, pulling the door closed behind him -- the door itself was heavy and cumbersome -- it felt like pulling closed a bank vault. The ground below them still shook, but the sound was more subdued in the space, and even their breathing -- quick and frightened -- had an insulated quality to it.
Mulder heard the sound of light metal meeting metal, and then a dull glow emerged from his left -- Marlo had lit a kerosene lamp and had it turned all the way down.
Scully, standing close next to him, craned her neck to look around the room, and he followed suit.
The room was stacked -- even the door to the space itself -- from floor to ceiling with old phone books and yellow pages, most of them turned sepia with age. The ceiling of the room was soft and metallic with what looked like aluminum foil, but upon closer inspection revealed itself to be reflective-foil-wrapped fiberglass duct insulation, which Mulder could see ran from the ceiling itself down the walls and to the floor, and wrapped the whole of the room into a cocoon-like swaddling.
He swung a look toward Marlo, who shrugged.
"My husband was the paranoid type," she said, "and a good thing, too."
Scully put a hand to the wall, her face still a mask of concern.
"It's always worked for me," Marlo said, though her confidence sounded as though it may be waning.
Mulder looked to William, who was standing very still, his arms at his side, his hands curled into light fists, eyes closed.
"Can everyone be quiet, please," the boy said.
After a moment he cracked his eye and looked at Marlo. “Can you… not breathe so loud?” Marlo nodded mutely and pulled an albuterol inhaler from the pocket of her apron, shaking it twice and taking a shallow puff, her eyes never once leaving the young man before her.
Mulder could see William’s irises roll back into his head as his eyelids fluttered closed and he felt it the moment the vibration under their feet took on a new frequency. After a moment a high whine joined the low rumble and the hairs on the back of Mulder’s neck stood on end.
Then – a monstrous groan of metal followed by a concussive reverb that ground up through the floor, a tremor that started in Mulder’s feet and shot up through his ankles, legs and then through the top of his head. A two second pause and then the same cataclysmic reverberation. Then another. And another.
And then silence.
William inhaled and seemed to come to himself as though he’d been in a trance. He took a breath and looked to his parents.
“They’ll be airborne again in a few hours,” he said, “we should go.”

The lead blanket idea had come from Rebecca, who had been a dental hygienist before the invasion. They had broken into several dental offices and taken the lead-lined aprons that they draped across patient’s laps for use during X-Rays and she had skillfully begun sewing them together when she and Jordan had been taken by the light.
Scully had finished the job — suturing the last few pieces into a covering that would save her and Mulder many times, and would have saved Rebecca and her daughter if only they’d had it finished.
They met Smith before the abduction, in an outdoor store outside of Hamilton. He was thrashing his way through the skiing gear when they entered, startling him. Mulder, Scully and Rebecca had been on a mission to find a new jacket for Jordan, and hadn’t seen another soul for a week. Smith was armed for bear and had raised a weapon at them, but lowered it the second he’d seen the eight year old girl. They found out later that he’d had a daughter who’d been lost during the initial invasion.
“Oh,” he’d said in a baffled voice, seeing the girl, like he’d forgotten children were a thing that could still exist.
Mulder and Scully had lowered their weapons and they’d entered into a quick detente.
A ship had come over the horizon as they were about to walk out of the store, each of them a little better outfitted than they’d been when they walked in. Avoiding the crafts were a new experience for them at the time – after dropping bombs on the initial ships of the invasion, the newcomers – the faceless men – had moved south en masse.
“Come on!” Smith had said, leading them back into the dark cave of the store. He flew down an aisle littered with a scattered display of Nalgene bottles and microbial filters, kicking them aside as the foursome followed him blindly. He turned toward an area of the store set up like a campsite.
“Grab a sleeping bag and get in ‘em. Quick! There,” he said, pointing, “the big warm ones! Go!”
They’d all done as they were told as the rumbling of the ship started shaking the ground under them. Mulder could see the scanning light running over the parking lot outside and moving toward the store, and ducked his head into his bag, Scully next to him doing the same.
“Mom?!” Jordan whimpered from Mulder’s other side.
“It’s okay, kid!” Smith said, “It’ll be okay!”
The light went by them and then away, the rumbling stopping a minute or two later. Smith was the first to emerge out of his bag.
“Phew,” he said, and then Mulder, Scully and Rebecca tentatively poked their heads out of their own sleeping bags. “It worked. Discovered it by accident when I pitched a tent outside Mississauga last week. Held my breath, ducked into my sleeping bag and the damn thing went right by. Probably helped that I was under some thick vegetation. Damn near shit my pants.” He glanced at Jordan. “Oops, sorry about my language, kid.”
Jordan smiled shyly at him, her hair a staticky mess from being in the sleeping bag. “It’s okay,” the girl said. “I don’t mind.”
The sleeping bag trick would prove to be a combination of simple coverage and dumb luck, but the idea it had sparked would save countless lives. Smith was utterly devoted to Jordan after the incident, however. He was never quite the same after she was taken.

Polo, with his flair for the dramatic, had been watching Kit at the old basketball court for a few minutes before he decided to step out of the dark and make his presence known. He liked Kit, he really did, but it seemed to be a running theme in the Cruz family to be a letdown and friendly or not Polo wasn’t going to let Kit get away without returning every last cent he was owed. “Remember when we were kids,” he took a drag of his cigarette and cocked his chin toward the rusty old hoop, “Marlo tried to dunk, tore the whole fuckin’ hoop off? Mr Walsh came out and fixed it, right? Shit’s been crooked ever since.” @kitcruz

Character sheet Commander Marlo CC-7111
Appearance:
Hair: Dyed brown, curly, sides shaved down
Jewelry: Silver earrings; little loops with cones dangling from them
Tattoo: "Mesh'la" Tattooed on his neck right side
Scars: Marlo has a few small ones that he got while being out in the streets of coruscant.
Other: -
Background:
Marlo, or in his cadet years Eleven, is a clone from the CC class. He was trained by Alpha-18 who's way of training involved a lot of insults, injuries and punishments. Marlo, knowing that his only way of getting better and avoiding Eighteen's punishments was to train himself to the bone, worked incredibly hard during his cadet years to always perform above expectations. That still didn't always keep him out of trouble though, since even from a young age Marlo wasn't afraid to talk back to his Alpha trainer.
Marlo was close friends with a clone in his batch that went by the number CC-7531, aka Thirty-one. Thirty one and, at that point still, Eleven got along well and were pretty much inseparable, helping each other through the harsh training and the healing after. When there was a need for new commanders at the front, Thirty-one was sent out early. When Marlo got sent out he always hoped that he could see Thirty-one again, but that hope was crushed when he got news of his death. His friend had died during his first campaign at the front and Marlo still feels guilt for not properly telling him goodbye before he was send out.
Personality:
Marlo is the youngest coruscant guard commander and was trained under Alpha-18. He cares a lot about his men and he's easy to talk with, although a bit dense when it comes to social cues.
Marlo's greatest skill is hand to hand combat due to the harsh training Alpha-18 had put him under. Due to this training, Marlo also ended up being incredibly strong willed, but also quite hot headed. He's normally very sweet and often checks on his troopers and friends their well being, but if someone pisses him off or wrongs him/the people he cares about, he isn't afraid to yell back what he thinks of that person or to start a fight, especially since he knows who would win.
Headcanons:
Marlo loves tooka's! It's his favorite animal.
His favorite candy is peppermint.
Marlo allows himself only one bad habit and that is drinking alcohol (excessively if he's coping).
When Marlo wears natborn clothes, he likes wearing sweaters the most, especially the fluffy kind.
Marlo likes spending his time sparring with his vod'e on the training mat. He doesn't want to get rusty.
Marlo tied once with Eighteen during his training right before he graduated early. He did play dirty though.
Marlo bit Alpha-18 once as a cadet and he doesn't regret it, even though he did get punished for it after.
Marlo likes dancing and, when he can, he goes to 79's to dance there and drink.

Diary of a Junebug

Starfish in the sand
Collecting seashells is fun! Finding little treasures in the sand is something that never gets old. It's one of the little wonders of nature that keeps on giving.
Seashells are so cool and fascinating to look at. No two are alike and you never know what you'll find in the sand. Once in a while unique shells pop up in the beach, like these golden starfish ones. I don't know how long they'll stick around, so I try to collect a bunch to keep and give as gifts.
Jamie and Nedra have been staying at the camp for a while, enjoying the scenery and activities. It's been a long time since Jamie visited and this is Nedra's first time. A few days later Chrissie, Theda, Jean, and Emma joined us - which was why Jamie and Nedra stuck around.
So we've been having fun collecting seashells and doing craft projects with them. We made jewelry, decorated furniture, painted them, put together gift bags - there's a lot you can do with seashells! It's also nice to just chill and hang out with friends - especially Jean and Nedra as I haven't seen much of them since the entourage disbanded.
Jean's an actress and model with an interesting story regarding her family. Around the same time she joined the entourage, she had reunited with her father, who she hadn't seen in over 20 years. Up until she was around 5 Jean was raised by her mom. After she died, her dad decided to come back into her life and change his ways, abandoning the life of a conman. So he married his longtime partner and adopted Jean in hopes of starting over.
Unfortunately things didn't quite work out. Although Jean and her dad got along well, he fell back into his old schemes by stealing from heiress Agathe Dieudonne when he was going through some financial problems. The heiress forgave him since she took a liking to Jean and offered to send her to a prestigious boarding school in France so she can see the world. When her dad's old ways of living started to catch up with him, he and her stepmom decided to take up Agathe's offer so Jean could have a better life.
Over the years Jean kept in touch with her dad and stepmom through letters. Agathe doted on her like a granddaughter and used her connections to keep an eye on Jean's dad to make sure he was doing okay. Jean became aware of his past when she grew older, and the way she sees it, the conman and her dad are two different people. The fact that he tried his best and was willing to give her up so she could have a better upbringing is more than enough for her.
When she moved back to the states to pursue Broadway, Jean set out to reunite with her dad. It surprisingly wasn't too hard to find him and her stepmom as they happened to live on Peace Coast Island, not too far from where Jean was when she was in the entourage. Since then they've made up for a lot of lost time and Jean makes time in her busy schedule to visit often.
In a few weeks, Jean will be on tour for a show and one of the stops is the island. Coincidentally, Nedra's gonna be touring too and so she'll be performing a few nights at Starlight as well. The two became good friends through Jamie, becoming mentors for a drama program at Starlight Theatre as well as regular performers there for a time. Since the entourage disbanded they became super busy so it's nice that they finally got together for a long overdue meet up.
I told Jean about how Marlo's a huge fan of her and like Nedra, she's down to returning to the camp to meet her. We're still working out the details but Nedra and Jean will coordinate their schedules while I check in with Marlo and Don. It's gonna be fun having them all together!
Things have been the same old in Camellia according to Theda. Chrissie pops in for a visit every now and then, usually to bother Tanner or cause mischief with Lala, Theda, and sometimes Delwyn. It's good to hear that he's been doing much better these days - still, Edvin's absence continues to be a gaping presence.
Theda was right when she said that sooner or later, they'll move on and be okay - but it doesn't change the fact that what's gone is gone. And I fully agree with her.
Chrissie has also been spending a lot of time with Emma and her nieces and nephew, especially now that Emma lives about 15 mins away. She mentioned that Rocky and Lex have their hands full with the babies, which is why she's been bothering other friends. Emma doesn't mind as she's still adjusting to living in Cityburg, a drastic change of scenery after spending most of her life in a moderately sized suburban town.
Emma's doing a lot better since moving out and living with her brother Danny and his kids. She always got along with her mom's side of the family better than her dad's. Her mom's the type of parent who tends to be a bit overly critical of her kids but means well and just wants the best for them. As for Emma's father, he clearly favors her younger brother while putting Emma down for pretty much everything.
What prompted Emma to leave - aside from the threat of getting cut off financially - was something unforgivable her younger brother did. It's a fucking mess and if he keeps this up, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up destroying him. It also didn't help that their father contributed by adding fuel to the fire.
Basically, the brother's one of those shitty tabloid people who profits out of ruining lives. The incident involved a close friend of Emma's, who died unexpectedly due to illness. The brother, who hated the friend for petty reasons, got a hold of Emma's phone, looked through her texts and took a lot of her conversations with her friend out of context to paint the friend and her family in a bad light.
In short, he turned a bunch of texts into "signs" that the friend was likely murdered by her family. He also revealed private information about the friend and how she was going through a rough time, claiming those as motives for why her family wanted her dead. He also made it look like Emma was the one to bring up the speculation, which the family knows is a load of bullshit. To those who knew the friend, it's clearly a pathetic attempt to ruin someone's name for clout.
As a result of the incident, Emma's mom had enough and kicked the father out, which Emma said was long overdue. As for her younger brother, her mom hasn't disowned him (yet) but she's made it clear how she found what he did despicable. Danny never approved of his stepfather and didn't get along with the youngest, so his reaction to what happened was along the lines of disappointed but not surprised.
Since I last saw Emma, things have improved a lot between her and Margie. Although they're aunt and niece, they've always gotten along more like sisters. While Rusty and Linda took quickly to having their aunt move in, there was some tension with Margie, though it had nothing to do with Emma personally. Margie was forced to grow up quickly after their other dad, Terry, and older sister Sherry, died last year, so things haven't been easy for the family.
With Danny having trouble balancing work and family life and Emma having problems at home, he decided to take her in. Emma says their mom has mixed feelings about it, believing that Danny's giving her an easy way out. If anything, I think Emma's a hard worker, but not in a way a capitalist society approves of it. In other words, capitalism can't profit off someone like her, so it sees her as useless. By living with Danny, an entertainer who not only understands what she's going through, but has also made a successful life for himself and his kids, Emma can freely pursue her creative passions without worries.
Right now, Emma's been working on creating content for her channel, posting journal with me videos and vlogging everyday life. She hopes to open her own sticker shop one day so Daisy Jane's gonna help her with that when the time comes. For now, she wants to focus on developing her art style by experimenting and studying other artists before getting into all that. I'm so excited to see where this will take her!
Chrissie and Theda have been really into making charms so that's what we're gonna do with the tiny seashells. I think the little starfish shells make the prettiest charms, especially on a bracelet. We also have some jewelry wire so I'm thinking of making earrings too. It's been years since I've made earrings so it's good to finally use up those earring hooks.
For the larger seashells, we're thinking of using them to decorate furniture. Theda used a bunch of seashells to decorate an old mirror she found while thrifting with Daisy Jane and it looks sooooo pretty! The decor and the gold paint looks like a vintage picture frame with the starry seashells giving it a sorta celestial vibe. I'm still not sure what to decorate yet but I'm considering one of the old bookshelves that's sitting in storage that has been in need of fixing up for a while.
Emma's been filming footage for her vlogs so I try to do a bit of everything so she can have the full camping experience. So far it's mostly sightseeing, crafting, and chilling with the campers. From what it looks like, Emma's considering splitting the content into two videos - one for seashell crafting and one for sightseeing. I'm flattered that she can get so much out of the camp!
Jean and Nedra find the camp a good spot to unwind from their busy lives. Before meeting up with the others Jean visited her dad and stepmom, who will see her again when she returns to Starlight for opening night. She also said the next time she drops by, she plans to come via plane as she's a pilot, like Chrissie. I think Marlo would die on the spot when she finds out that she would be in a plane flown by Jean Theodora!
Today was a low key day where we wandered around, enjoying the sights and taking it slow. We actually didn't do too much crafting today, which is fine as we tackled a lot of big projects early on so we were kinda running low on shells. So we ended up with a pretty good haul and a bunch of new ideas for craft projects.
No matter how busy or chill the days are, we always find ourselves back at the beach, searching for starfish in the sand.

FATHER’S DAY
The death of Lucille Ball’s father at an early age had a great impact. Throughout the four situation comedies built around her, the “Lucy” characters had mothers, but references to their fathers was rare. Here’s a tribute to the precious few dads found in the Lucyverse!
Tumblr media
Henry “Had” Durrell Ball (1887-1915) ~ Father of Lucille Ball and Fred Ball.
Tumblr media
Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y Alberni II (1894-1973) ~ Father of Desi Arnaz and grandfather of Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz IV. Desi Jr. is now the father of two.
Tumblr media
Ricky Ricardo (aka Ricardo Alberto Fernando Ricardo y de Acha aka Enrique Alberto Fernando Ricardo y de Acha III) ~ Father of Ricky Ricardo Jr. (Keith Thibodeaux). Actually, Ricky’s son was played by 8 actors over the course of the series.
Tumblr media
In “Return Home From Europe” (ILL S5;E26), Ricky insists that he is not the father of baby Cheddar Chester!
Tumblr media
Below are all the fathers on “I Love Lucy”!
But first, a (Father’s Day) word from our sponsor!
Tumblr media
Will Potter ~ Father of Ethel Mertz. Besides Ricky himself, Will Potter (Irving Bacon) is the only father of the main characters on “I Love Lucy.”  Although all four have living mothers (two of whom are characters on the show), only Ethel’s father is alive and well and appears on screen in “Ethel’s Hometown” (ILL S4;E16).
Tumblr media
Charlie Appleby ~ Father of Stevie. Charlie makes two appearances on the series, although each time he is played by a different actor: Hy Averback played him in “Baby Pictures” (ILL S3;E5) and George O'Hanlon (inset photo) in “Lucy and Superman” (ILL S6;E13).
Tumblr media
Harry Munson ~ Father of Billy. Harry and Grace live about a mile from the Ricardos in Connecticut. Harry is played by Tristram Coffin in two episodes: “Lucy Misses the Mertzes” (ILL S6;E17) and in “The Country Club Dance” (S6;E25).
Tumblr media
Ralph Ramsey ~ Father of Bruce Ramsey. The Ramseys live across from the Ricardos in Westport. Ralph (Frank Nelson) was only seen in two Connecticut-based episodes: “Lucy Gets Chummy With The Neighbors” (ILL S6;E18) and “The Country Club Dance” (ILL S6;E25), although Nelson appeared in many more episodes as different characters.
Tumblr media
Danny Williams ~ Father of Rusty, Linda and Terry, although Terry does not appear in “Lucy Makes Room For Danny”, the cross-over episode that brought “The Danny Thomas Show” to CBS. In fact, for its first three years, the show was known as “Make Room for Daddy.”  Subsequently, Thomas did a sequel called “Make Room for Granddaddy” and Lucille Ball guest-starred on it in 1971.
Tumblr media
The Sheriff of Bent Fork, Tennessee ~ Father of twin girls Teensy and Weensy. Will Wright played the character in “Tennessee Bound” (ILL S4;E15).
Tumblr media
Mr. Stanley ~ Father to nine girls! When “Lucy Goes To The Hospital” (ILL S2;E16), Ricky meets a man in the fathers’ waiting room (played by Charles Lane) anxiously awaiting the birth of his latest (and he says last) child, whom he hopes will be a boy. His hopes are dashed - times three over!
Tumblr media
The Italian Farmer ~ in “Lucy’s Bicycle Trip” (ILL S5;E24), claims to have nine  children: Teresa, Sofia, Luigi, Pietro, Dino, Gino, Rosa, Mario, and Antonio!  The Farmer is played by Mario Siletti, but his "multi bambini” remain off screen!
Tumblr media
Ernie Kovacs ~ Father of Kippie and Bette, unseen but mentioned characters in “Lucy Meets the Mustache” (LDCH S3;E3) in 1960. The girls are said to be making friends with Little Ricky, while their father entertains at Lucy and Ricky’s (last) party.
Moving on to the Fathers of “The Lucy Show”...
Tumblr media
Theodore J. Mooney ~ Father of Bob, Ted, Arnold, and Rosemary, who was never seen, but is said to live in Trenton and to have had a baby, making Mr. Mooney a grandfather as well! Gale Gordon played Mr. Mooney from 1963 to 1968. If the character was ever given a spin-off, it might have been called “My Three Sons”!
Tumblr media
Father Time ~ Played by Sherman Bagley (Ralph Hart) in “Chris’s New Year’s Eve Party” (TLS S1;E14). He is accompanied by Baby New Year played by Jerry Carmichael (Jimmy Garrett). In the series, Sherman’s father Ralph is mentioned, but never seen. Jerry’s dad is deceased and never given a name.
Tumblr media
Kenneth Westcott ~ Father of Debbie, who is a friend of Lucy Carmichael’s daughter Chris and Principal of their high school in 1963′s “Lucy is a Chaperone” (TLS S1;E27). He is played by Hanley Stafford.
Tumblr media
Mr. Sanford ~ Father of Timmy, who is having a birthday where Lucy and Viv are hired as party planners and the entertainment in “Kiddie Parties, Inc.” (TLS S2;E2). Mr. Sanford is played by Lyle Talbot. If he was ever given a sequel, it might be called “Sanford and Son”!
Tumblr media
Jonathan Winslow ~ Father of Charlie, Danny and Bobbie (aka Roberta) in “Lucy the Babysitter” (TLS S5;E16). What Lucy doesn’t realize is that the Winslow children are actually baby chimps!  Mr. Winslow was played by Jonathan Hole.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and Harry’s Tonsils” (TLS S2;E5), Mr. Phillips (Jack Collins) plays an father expecting his first child who believes Mr. Mooney is there for the same reason, while Mr. Mooney thinks Mr. Phillips is there for a tonsillectomy! Phillips (having his third child) is similar to the character of Mr. Stanley (who is having his ninth – all girls!) in “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Becomes a Father” (TLS S3;E9) finds single mom and widow Lucy Carmichael trying to be both mother and father to her son, Jerry. She joins five other cub scout dads on a weekend away, trying desperately to do what the other dads do. The fathers include (left to right): Hal Smith as Mr. Wilson, George ‘Red’ Fox as George (hidden), Gale Gordon as Mr. Mooney, George Niese as Mr. Carter, and Buster West as Tom. Coincidentally, Gale Gordon had the surnames Carter in “Here’s Lucy” and Wilson in “Dennis the Menace” but neither were dads!
Tumblr media
In the play “The Founding of Danfield” staged in “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (TLS S3;E23) in 1965, Godfrey plays “Daddy” of Lucybelle (Lucy Carmichael), and [spoiler alert] Conrad P. Field (Mr. Mooney) turns out to be the daddy of the Honest-But-Poor Piano Player Dan (Vinnie, played by Max Showalter). In real life, Godfrey was the father of three.
Tumblr media
The Father of Our Country ~ George Washington, as embodied by Lucy Carmichael when “Lucy and Viv Open a Restaurant” (TLS S2;E20). Viv (Vivian Vance) dresses a George’s wife, Martha, to promote their new Colonial-themed restaurant.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25), Lucille Ball plays both Lucy Carmichael and a look-alike gun moll named Rusty, who performs the Cole Porter song “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”!
And now the Dads of “Here’s Lucy”....
Tumblr media
Mr. Caldwell ~ Father of Laurie in “Mod, Mod Lucy” (HL S1;E1), the very first episode of “Here’s Lucy.” Lew Parker played the over-protective dad of teenage Laurie (Nancy Roth). His wife is played by Nancy Howard. Parker was best known for playing the father of another TV character, Ann Marie (Marlo Thomas) on “That Girl.” In real-life, Marlo’s father was Lucy’s friend and co-star - one of the most famous daddies on TV - Danny Thomas!
Tumblr media
On “Lucy and Johnny Carson” (HL S2;E11), while appearing on “The Tonight Show” and playing Stump the Band, Lucy Carter chooses a song titled “Snoops the Lawyer” that she says her father sang to her when she was a child.  This is the only mention of her father on the series. Coincidentally, Ball’s real mother is one of the audience members (Carson is sitting on the arm of her chair). Since the song was not written until 1920, and Lucille Ball’s real father Henry died in 1915, this cannot be a real-life recollection from Lucy.
Tumblr media
Lee Wong ~ Father of Linda Chang and Sue Chin in “Lucy the Laundress” (HL S2;E17). The single father and business owner was played by James Hong.
Tumblr media
Moose Manley ~ Father of milquetoast Wally in “Lucy and Wally Cox” (HL S2;E21). Moose was played by Alan Hale Jr. and his timid son by Wally Cox (insert).
Tumblr media
Harrison Otis Carter the First ~ Great Grandfather of Harry Carter IV (aka Harry). Gale Gordon’s image was used to create Harry’s great grandfather.  Harry claims he was one of the founders of Sinclairville, New York, and was father of 17 children!
Tumblr media
Konstantin Kasos ~ Grandfather of the Bride in “Lucy’s Wedding Party” (HL S3;E8). The role was played by Bruce Gordon (”The Untouchables”) who was really just 55 years old playing a 77 Greek granddaddy.
Tumblr media
Vincent Price - Father of Victoria aka “Little Vicky”, the name of Price’s real-life daughter, who is mentioned by Lucy, but does not appear in the episode “Lucy Cuts Vincent’s Price” (HL S3;E9).
Tumblr media
Alfredo Colucci ~ Father of Ricardo, Anna Maria, Louisa, Luigi, Vincenzo, Dino, Lucrezia, Alfredo Jr., Margarito, Bruno, Rosa, and Frederico - all of whom appear in the final moments of “Lucy and Harry’s Italian Bombshell” (HL S4;E3) starring Kaye Ballard. Emile Autuori plays Alfredo, but the twelve children appear uncredited.
Tumblr media
Claude Wolff ~ Husband of Petula Clark, who was noticeably pregnant when they played themselves on a “Here’s Lucy” in 1972. In real-life, Wolff became a dad for the third time with the birth of his first son, Patrick.
Tumblr media
Harry Carter (Gale Gordon) finally got to play a working class dad to two unambitious teens when he appeared in a TV commercial during “Lucy and Cousin Ernie’s Fun Farm” (HL S1;E23) in 1969.
Tumblr media
Harry Carter (Gale Gordon) pretends to be a husband and father (to be) when he convinces Lucy to play his pregnant wife to scare of a domineering suitor (Jean Willes) in “Lucy, The Part-Time Wife” (HL S3;E14).
Tumblr media
The Lucyverse has plenty of room for fathers of all kinds. Father Lambros (Paul Picerni) showed up for a Greek wedding in “Lucy’s Wedding Party” (HL S3;E8).
And Finally, “Life With Lucy
All Lucy Fathers come back to Gale Gordon - a man who never had children in real life!
Tumblr media
Curtis McGibbon ~ Father of Ted McGibbon and Grandfather of Ted’s children Rebecca and Kevin. Gale Gordon played Curtis, the patriarch on “Life With Lucy,” with Larry Anderson as Ted, Jenny Lewis as Becky, and Philip Amelio as Kevin.
Tumblr media
In “Mother of the Bride” (LWL S1;E8) in 1986, Lucy Barker and her sister Audrey (Audrey Meadows) mention their father during a private conversation in the kitchen.

Could I request a prompt where Faith had lived and been stolen by Raymond as a baby. What if she comes back into Claire and Jaime’s lives while they’re in Paris (while Claire is in L'Hôpital visiting her grave) and boards the Artemis with them. She ends up with Claire on Porpoise and saves the life of Elisa Pound. He then accompanies her to the Governor’s Ball and helps her family rescue Ian? Thank you so much for writing such amazing imagines! I really liked Mod Marlos In The Depth Of The Sea!
Hi Nonnie!
Thank you so much for your kind words and your request! ITDOTS is still one of the things i’m proudest of, and I hope I get to go back and continue it the way I’ve always planned.
I really love this prompt, and it’s a project I would love to take on in the near future! Unfortunately before I can tackle any creative writing, I’ve got to research and write a 6,000 word uni paper, and start revision for my exams. It’s also been a long time since I’ve written any fic, so I might be a tad rusty, and need to go back and refresh my memory on some Season 2 and 3 moments.
Given the current state of things, it’s likely that once I get my coursework done, I’ll have lots of free time on my hands, so stay tuned, and hopefully I’ll have something for you within the coming weeks or months (sorry if the wait drags out!)
And please don’t be afraid to harass me if I’m taking too long!
Marlo 💕

is anyone gonna talk about how Rusty Marlo took a photo at a planned parenthood (on her story)
W... why would we talk about it? The planned parenthood thing came up here a while ago with regards to Lauren and it’s really important people remember they offer a lot of services and that’s part of the whole problem of people wanting to defund it because they think they only do abortions. I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at

(our friends set us up on a blind date as a prank because we don’t like each other but neither of us wants to let them win so ) | Part 5:
( part 1 ) ( part 2 ) ( part 3 ) ( part 4 )
For once, Winn isn’t late.
In fact, he’s five minutes early.
And if this might have something to do with the fact that Brainy knocked on his door half an hour ago to remind him they should carpool this time, well. Alex and Kara don’t have to know that.
“See who needs an I’m late jar,” he scoffs, glaring at the closed door. They are getting better at this fake dating things, he thinks. But maybe it’s just that this is the first big gathering they’re going together– yesterday totally doesn’t count, there were too many shenanigans to count. Today is the real test, if they can fool everyone during Kara’s dinner, then they really can do this.
“You are talking to yourself,” Brainy comments, reaching past Winn to try and ring the doorbell again, but Winn bats his hand away. “Maybe they didn’t hear us the first time! You are mumbling– did you know that is one of the first signs of–”
“That sentence better be ending with genius or– hey,” Winn loudly draws out the word as the door swings open, hoping to cover up their argument, and snatches his hand back from where it had been pointing a finger threateningly. He brandishes the champagne they brought, grinning up, “Happy New Year!”
It’s Alex that answers the door, but she looks harried, her usual impeccable DEO uniform is askew, boots unlaced, “oh thank god,” she pushes them out of the way, locking up behind her, “Marlo is threatening to blow up the hospital and Town Square, dinner is canceled. Kara’s already there and I’m on my way to the hospital.”
“They put up a giant screen on Town Square, half the city’s there to watch the ball drop live– hundreds of people–”
“Yeah, I know,” Alex throws him a key, already shooing them back to the elevator, “which is why I need you and Brainy in the DEO asap. If he’s using the kind of weapons he deals, then we can’t waste any more time. Take Kara’s car, it’s on the garage somewhere but it should be working.”
“Kara has a car?”
“Why would Supergirl have a car?”
“Okay, you two need to learn to use your inside voices,” she huffs, pressing the buttons with more force than necessary, “and of course she does, she’s just terrible at driving.”
The elevator music plays obnoxiously cheerful as ever, and Alex seems about ready to draw her gun and shoot the speaker box right off the wall. Winn isn’t aware of all the details, has no idea where this guy even came from, but part of him is buzzing with excitement, rebelling against the boring civilian life. Don’t get him wrong– blow up the town? Bad, very bad. But also, going back to work? Awesome.
“And I know you still have to take that psych evaluation next week, but this is an emergency,” Alex continues, effectively bursting his bubble. “It’s an all hands on deck night.”
The doors ping open and she is stalking down the hall, leaving Winn and Brainy to figure out for themselves which car is Kara’s. Winn, for one, hopes it’s something very embarrassing that he will be able to lord over her head for the near future.

“I’m adding near-death experience to my list of things that happened in the 21st century,” Brainy tells him as they rush through the hallways at the DEO. Agents are scattered around, like spooked little mice, not knowing what to do, and Winn feels a pang of sympathy for them. Without both Alex and J’onn, they must be even worse off than him. And man, Winn had to listen to Brainy bitching all the way here, “you broke so many traffic laws I lost count– and it’s impossible for me to lose count!”
“For the last time,” Winn does not whine, “we were in a rush! We can’t wait for every red light! Or follow the speed limit and– and jaywalking is also a crime! That guy was clearly jaywalking, alright?”
“I shall drive the next time,” Brainy decides, completely ignoring Winn’s very valid counter-argument, “the probability of a car accident with you behind the wheel is too high.”
“Excuse me? Do you even know how to drive one of our cars?”
“The risk will still be lower.”
“Okay, that’s it, I’m tuning you out,” he says and promptly begins walking faster. Jesus Christ, they are so not going to be able to fool anyone for much longer. He leaves Brainy behind, feeling stupidly smug for reaching the control room first, and heads straight for his old chair–
And for one brief moment, everything’s right in the world.
– Kara’s voice rings through the comms, “guys, I found the bomb in Town Square, it’s in the sewers, how do I shut it down? Hello? Anyone listening?”
“Loud and clear,” Winn says, knowing his smile is stretching for miles. Out of the corner of his eyes, he sees Brainy finally pushing past a group of panicked agents. “But I need deets, hang on.”
“Winn?” She squeals happily as if there wasn’t a very dangerous device on her hands, “you’re back!”
“Only for tonight,” Alex warns, and it echoes strangely. She must be in the sewers too. “Don’t think I forgot the paperwork.”
“You are no fun,” he deadpans, even as his grin stays in place, even as he scans the sewers for the bomb. Just one more–
It pulls up on its own in the screen. What the–
“I’ve scanned the sewers under the square, we should have visual on the bomb in a few seconds,” Brainy says from the chair at his left, and Winn rolls his eyes. Of course he did. On the screen, the tiny blinking dot is magnified until they can see an X-Ray of the device. “This does not– I’m unfamiliar with this design.”
“I don’t like the sound of that,” Alex speaks again, “I’ve found mine too. There’s a countdown.”
“It’s going to blow up at midnight, isn’t it?” Winn asks tiredly. Of course it is. A flair for the dramatics is a requirement for bad guys, he’s pretty sure they don’t let you go about your villainy and nefarious business if you fail the theatrics exam. “That being said,”  he continues, squinting at the screen, “this is giving me major Fort Rozz vibes. Didn’t we bust some guy dealing Kryptonian tech once?”
“Yeah, Frank McAllison. He had been buying things off the escaped inmates and reselling– and it wasn’t just Kryptonian either.” Alex recites, and he can hear the frown in her voice, “you think these came from him?”
“I mean, there was no way to be sure we got all of the stuff back,” he shrugs, watching Brainy turn the bomb’s schematics around, “but if it was from Fort Rozz…” he trails off, trying to remember if they downloaded all the data from the prison before Kara sent it flying off into space.
“It would be on the prison’s inventory,” Brainy finishes, and if this were a cartoon, Winn thinks a lightbulb would appear above his head. He entertains the idea for about half a second because it’s better than dwelling on the two bombs about to blow up two-thirds of the city. Brainy concentrates, connecting with the DEO’s servers, and files flicker on the screen, too quickly for Winn to process. And that– that is so annoying, how he just takes over things. But there’s a countdown and hundreds of people and there’s no way, no way, Winn could fine comb through all these files in time. So it’s fine.
It’s fine.
And if Winn still wants to find a way to mess up the unruffled look he always wear– that’s just another Tuesday.
“There’s a match,” Brainy snaps back, straightening up suddenly on his chair. “It’s a very old Andorian design, hasn’t been used in a few years. Which would make sense if it really was made by an inmate.”
Kara whoops on the comms and Alex’s relieved sigh echoes soon after, slightly distorted by the sewers acoustics. The specifics provided by Fort Rozz’s old files line up perfectly with the visual they have on Kara’s bomb, down to the last screw and glue, but. There’s always a but. “Not out of the woods yet,” Winn grimaces, pulling up the scans he got from Alex’s device. It’s a different style, probably from a different maker, just different enough to throw them for a loop and lose them a time they definitely don’t have. He glances at the clock; five to midnight. “Hate to be a downer, but Houston, we have a problem.”
“Of course we do,” Kara grumbles, sighing a twin sigh from Alex’s, “what now?”
“They’re different bombs,” Brainy tells her, and there’s something tired on his voice that makes Winn think that unruffled might not be such an accurate descriptor as he originally thought. “And Director Danvers’s has no match on the server.”
The clock keeps ticking mercilessly, and a few of the nearby agents are beginning to look nervously between them, hands hovering over their phones. That’s not good; if word gets out–
“You can figure out how this thing works faster,” Winn says, turning to Brainy. The look on his eyes is two shades off deer caught in the headlights, at the most, but it vanishes quickly, determination setting in firmly after. “I’ll walk Supergirl through disarming hers, you worry about Alex’s.”
Brainy doesn’t hesitate, only casts him a doubtful look as he focuses on his task, “the files are in Kryptonian.”
“I know that,” he glowers, inching his chair further away with petty vindication, then clears his throat. “Okay, Supergirl, I’m not even going to try to pronounce all this, so let’s all use a bit of imagination with the literal translation, alright?”
Kara makes an affirmative noise, and fine, it’s been literal years since Winn had to teach himself the basics to fight off Indigo, he might be more than a little rusty, but it’s all they have as of right now so they’ll have to make do. Faintly, he catches bits of whatever Brainy is telling Alex, barely aware of anything that isn’t translating the confusing symbols into things that make sense and complementing with bits of engineering and mechanics he knows like the back of his hand.
Two minutes to midnight.
The bomb is halfway undone.
One minute to midnight.
Is it unscrewing the third screw or tearing off the wires?
Thirty seconds.
Definitely tearing off the wires.
Right?
Ten seconds.
Okay. Just– there should be a pop! noise any time now.
Five seconds.
Anytime now.

An explosion goes off in the sky as fireworks outshine the stars with bright, colorful lights, and a crowd cheers the New Year, drunkenly loud, almost drowning out the twin pop! sounds of the bombs’ detonators falling off harmlessly in the dirty water of National City’s sewer system.
A wave of clapping begins behind them, and Kara is laughing breathlessly in the comms with Alex cursing her heart out in a tone too relieved to be taken seriously. One of the agents brings an open champagne bottle.
“Happy New Year, guys!” Kara gushes, “you so need to see the fireworks– it’s so beautiful!”
“Kara, if I see you hovering anywhere near the fireworks when I come out of the sewers,” Alex threatens without any real bite, “I swear to god– wow. Okay, she’s really not exaggerating this time.” A pause. “Happy New Year.”
Winn slouches on his chair, giggling incredulously, exhaling so unbelievably relieved, and turns to see Brainy leaning against the consoles, the tense line of his shoulders less tight-edged. “Hey,” he says, holding his hand up for a fist bump and not caring if his voice comes out softer than he intended. “Happy New Year.”
Brainy regards his hand with an odd expression, one Winn can’t quite decipher, before tilting his head with a small smile, “Happy New Year, Winslow.”
He returns the fist-bump.
It’s a quiet moment, with the world cheering on outside and the odd, unnamed look on Brainys eyes, but if Winn had to label it, he thinks it just might mean progress.
