Prague’s Timeless Charm: Exploring the Heart of Bohemia
Tumblr media
Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a city where history and beauty converge in an almost magical way. Known as the “City of a Hundred Spires, it stands as a testament to centuries of architectural mastery, cultural evolution, and resilience. As I embarked on my journey through this stunning city, I was swept away by its medieval charm, vibrant streets, and the undeniable feeling of stepping back in time.
Morning: Old Town and Astronomical Wonders
My adventure began in the heart of the city—Old Town Square. The moment I stepped into the square, I felt as if I had entered a storybook. Surrounded by colorful Gothic and Baroque buildings, the square is the perfect starting point for anyone visiting Prague. At the center stands the magnificent Old Town Hall, home to one of Prague’s most iconic attractions—the Astronomical Clock.
As the hour struck, I joined the crowd gathered to watch the clock’s animated show, a medieval marvel dating back to the 15th century. The intricacy of the moving figures, combined with the ancient technology, left me in awe. From there, I wandered through the narrow, cobblestone streets of Old Town, admiring the picturesque buildings that tell stories of a bygone era.
Midday: Crossing Charles Bridge and Exploring Mala Strana
By midday, I found myself walking across the Charles Bridge, one of Prague’s most famous landmarks. Spanning the Vltava River, this historic stone bridge, lined with statues of saints, offers breathtaking views of the city. On one side, the majestic Prague Castle loomed in the distance, while on the other, the red-roofed buildings of the Old Town glowed under the soft sun.
Once across the bridge, I ventured into Mala Strana, or the “Lesser Town,” a charming district nestled beneath the castle. Here, I explored St. Nicholas Church, a stunning example of Baroque architecture with its impressive dome and intricate frescoes. The peaceful vibe of Mala Strana was the perfect contrast to the busier Old Town, offering quiet corners to relax and soak in the beauty of Prague.
Afternoon: Prague Castle and the Views from Above
No trip to Prague is complete without a visit to the Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle complex in the world. As I climbed the steps leading to the castle, I was rewarded with panoramic views of the city—a sea of red rooftops, spires, and the winding Vltava River below.
The castle grounds themselves are a treasure trove of history. I wandered through the majestic courtyards and explored the stunning St. Vitus Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece that dominates the skyline. Inside, the cathedral’s stained-glass windows cast colorful reflections on the stone floors, while the tombs of Bohemian kings and saints added a sense of grandeur to the space.
As I continued through the castle grounds, I visited the quaint Golden Lane, a narrow street lined with tiny, colorful houses that once housed castle workers and, according to legend, alchemists. Each house tells a story, adding to the magic of Prague’s timeless charm.
Evening: Dining in Wenceslas Square and the Nightlife of Prague
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Wenceslas Square, the bustling commercial heart of Prague. Surrounded by shops, cafés, and historical buildings, the square is a vibrant blend of the old and the new. I enjoyed a traditional Czech dinner at a local restaurant, savoring hearty dishes like goulash and dumplings, paired with the famous Czech beer.
After dinner, I explored Prague’s lively nightlife. From jazz clubs to cozy pubs, the city has no shortage of places to enjoy live music and experience the local culture after dark. The city’s medieval streets, illuminated by lanterns, took on an almost mystical quality, making it the perfect end to my day in the heart of Bohemia.
Conclusion: Exploring Prague with Roomchai Limited
Prague is a city that captures the heart with its timeless charm, historical richness, and cultural depth. Exploring its ancient streets, majestic castles, and lively squares in just one day was an unforgettable experience. Roomchai Limited played a crucial role in making my visit smooth and well-organized. From arranging guided tours of Prague’s most iconic sites to providing expert recommendations for dining and entertainment, their services ensured that I made the most of my time in this beautiful city.
While other agencies like Obokash and ShareTrip also offer tours to Prague, Roomchai’s personalized approach set them apart. Their attention to detail and local partnerships made it easy to navigate the city’s highlights without feeling rushed. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of art and architecture, or simply looking for an enchanting European destination, Prague should be on your travel list—and Roomchai Limited can help turn that dream into reality.

Program 9: The Light of Victory, and its Shadow, Part 1
Winter hammered down on the Lower East Side through November of 2001, but we didn’t notice much, working around the clock to complete the final program, along with our other projects. We were in bohemia; it didn’t matter if we came out of the office at 5pm or 5am, the bars and cafés were always lit and the streets packed with Christmas-lights and revelers at any hour. There was always hot coffee and when we knocked off, the “Hat” delivered powerful margaritas up the six flights to the studio, if the weather was foul enough that we didn’t want to cross the street.
Tumblr media
The final confrontation was a big challenge - how to bring it all together in a fitting climax, without resorting to Good vs. Evil cliché? Worse, how to do it without too much violence?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LEGO was in bad shape that year. It had suffered record losses globally - but Bionicle had pulled it out of the fire, and become the #1 selling action figure in all of toyland. It was experiencing its own narrative crescendo, from the depths of despair - closed offices, lost jobs, bankruptcy - to the height of redemption. They were in the black again. Not that we knew it at the time, mind. No one ever told us anything.
Tumblr media
But inside LEGO’s offices was another struggle; how do we handle this new phenomenon? Theirs was a golden brand, home to peaceful play and creativity in children, but its new heroes were fearsome warriors, armed to the teeth with brutal-looking weapons: razor-sharp axes, flaming swords, gruesome claws. The model team and the marketing team had to work it out, and they did, and the word came down from Denmark: they’re not weapons. They’re tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Tools… of destruction!” Naomi laughed, our liaison at the time. I mean, yeah. In their plays, I don’t think the Bionicle fans were having Lewa chop down trees with that axe of his. Nonetheless, we got it - our action sequences were full of daring escapes; cave-ins; collapsing bridges, or just-dodged boulders. When someone needed to blast a Rahi, they blasted instead the rocks in the cave above their head. No Rahi were outright stabbed in the making of this game. Buried alive, maybe. And if a “tool” did find its mark - it did so off-screen.
Tumblr media
Now, at the end, it was time to draw out the main theme that had been with us since the beginning. The story was about a battle - but between who? Violence, for us, had a different meaning. When we weren’t working we were playing Counterstrike, five or six of us in the studio late at night, teaming up as Terrorists or Counter-Terrorists on pub servers to take down some other five or six guys online. When we played as Terrorists, of course, we didn’t say that - Freedom-Fighters, we would call ourselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But as the excavators pulled the rubble from Ground Zero in the snow, we couldn’t play it any more. Terrorist meant something else now. After what we’d seen from our rooftop, the game just wasn’t fun any more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good and evil just wasn’t good enough any more. It didn’t make any sense any more. But this was okay, because from the beginning, that’s not what it was about. The Makuta wasn’t evil, and his brother, Mata Nui, wasn’t good.
Tumblr media
We knew that while building was fun, it was just as much fun to destroy. They were two sides of the same coin, and neither were wrong: it was all part of the play, part of learning, part of having fun. Not good or evil: Creation and Destruction, equal powers in the universe, natural and necessary. Both good. Both bad. Both neither. It’s true, we’d painted Destruction a bit negatively - using words like “Infected” Mask, or “Monsters,” but we’d needed the conflict.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the Makuta, for all its darkness and danger, was not evil after all, and he says as much at the end. The final act was the confrontation, not between Good and Evil, which was meaningless, but between Creation and Destruction, where everything comes from nothing, and goes back to it, eventually. This was the struggle between the Toa and the Rahi, and Mata Nui and Makuta, and a LEGO fan and her kid brother, building and smashing happily, in equal measure. Our world had gone a bit mad, but to us, this helped make some sense of it. We wanted to share what small comfort it brought.

at summer’s end
Tumblr media
it's time for the round-up of that season i hold so dear. watching summer fade at this time every year makes me feel like saying a sad goodbye to a best friend and a "see you next year!"
what did you do this summer?
i spent the first half in south bohemia, went to karlovy vary at the end of the school year, teaching barely over a week of summer camp, then flying to canada and the united states for the other half. we spent a full month in my home state of washington, over a week in michigan, and even a couple days exploring vancouver. it was just about everything i could've hoped for!
it was also my first summer as a gardener on my little plot - it was such a wonderful learning experience (post coming soon!). fortunately a friend of mine was able to look after it while i was gone, because like many of my hobbies which seem like oil and water, gardening and travel do not mix.
Tumblr media
what was the one thing you were looking forward to this summer?
time at the sea, eating seafood, spending time with my family, enjoying the beautiful northwest summer.
Tumblr media
what did you miss the most this summer?
i wasn't able to catch a couple of friends while in the united states which made me a bit bummed out, especially my friend nikki who was due to give birth from any day at that point and wasn't able to travel at all. i sometimes felt a bit overwhelmed with the social planning and had a bit of anxiety (will these people even want to see me after all this time?). mostly, i've found that this is a stupid thought and i am trying to be better about reaching out. there was a bit of discord with how to communicate with people this year, as i didn't have an american phone number and i've found that my friends back home aren't big on facebook since the whole cambridge analytica thing (even though it is basically essential to communication here in europe).
Tumblr media
best breakfast of the summer?
i'm sure i said this last time i was in washington for the summer, but damn, the brunch at señor moose in seattle is always to die for. to say nothing of their horchata lattes.
Tumblr media
song of the summer?
"whatever makes you mine", by john van deusen (a high school classmate of mine). we went to see his set at arts festival back in washington last month and hearing this and other songs of his as the sun set over the islands nearly brought me to tears. his new album is excellent.
Tumblr media
any festivals, plays, art exhibitions?
i admit this summer wasn't heavy on art (aside from our fantastic film vacation to KVIFF which was great as always), but i had been CRAVING some theater, preferably performed at the community theater in my hometown and we made it to a show the day after i arrived! this is a theater i have spent probably weeks of my life at so it felt really like home being there. i miss theater so much and will have to make a better effort to see more in prague (or elsewhere) when i can.
Tumblr media
best day?
there are so many, but one spent with old friends of mine, cruising around the islands, having a charcuterie picnic on the boat while drinking gin and tonics, crabbing and having a messy, smelly dungeness feast, getting to know my dear friend's littles better. perfect weather. this was my northwest day of my dreams.
Tumblr media
best drink?
my friend julie introduced me to white claw in seattle as something i had to try. and she was right. if you love flavored seltzers, you're going to eat white claw right up. it was basically the drink of the summer, besides all of the regular flavored seltzers consumed. it sounds really basic to say, but i do miss the ubiquity of seltzer water in the states! (cucumber melon is my favorite) trying to recreate it with sparkling mineral water and add-ins. we’ll see how it goes.
Tumblr media
what is something you wanted to accomplish this summer?
besides my first garden, i finally went paddle boarding and just adored it! i always thought i'd be one for water sports, despite having tried very many, but it was so incredibly peaceful and calming. i would really love to go regularly!
Tumblr media
favorite garment?
as i was packing for the united states, alex was wondering why i was bringing my favorite slouchy white sweater (above), as it was summer time. well, a) we're going to the northwest and b) then we're going to michigan which has rampant air-conditioning. ...i wore that thing all the time.
Tumblr media
best swimming?
we had a great hot summer day at the natural lake-pool in june with a friend and her little one. it was so cool and refreshing and i felt like the entire town of budejovice was there.
Tumblr media
what do you wish for next summer?
i honestly don't know this one -- for once, i have no destination in mind and absolutely no inkling. i'd like to have another year of gardening, make at least one camping trip work, and go on a lovely trip with my partner and little dog.
Tumblr media
other summer memories...
the time i made us go bowling (we've never bowled together before!). an impromptu slurpee stop at causland park just like being in high school. having to put on my eyeglasses to play mario kart (#washed). a friend traveling almost twelve hours by car (a wrong turn and an unnecessary ferry) to meet us in northern washington! watching the perfect sunset over the island from a rooftop with great company. the best arts festival weekend i've ever had. my favorite KJs (karaoke jockeys) both remembering me after two years. cheered on the mariners and ate crumpets at my favorite seattle cafe. camping two different times! voting in the local primary election “in person”. great meals, BBQs, hours spent chatting with old friends... my heart is so happy.
see ya next year, summer.
did we do any similar activities this year? how was your summer?
ps, past recaps: 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018

Nové Hamry Weekend House in Czech Republic
17 May 2021
Nové Hamry Weekend House
Architects: NEW HOW architects
Location: Nové Hamry, the Ore Mountains, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
The Nové Hamry Weekend House is only a few meters from the edge of the forest, from where it grows up towards the tops of spruces. Nestled among the trees, almost hidden compared to other white plaster houses next door, it almost looks as if it has been swallowed up by forests…
The design is based on the local nature and colour, in which you can find all shades of gray. You can see gray in the shades of trees, in granite and basalt rocks, and even in the dark green needles and trunks of the local spruces, which are so typical of the forests of the Ore Mountains. From the beginning, it was clear that the facade and roof of the holiday home should be covered with aluminum in a similar dark color. The façade structure was used to create an intense rough surface that vaguely resembles oiled black wood and slow-growing spruce trunks. However, its color and surface are not the only striking aspects of this house.
From a formal point of view, the new building is represented by an aerodynamic but angular figure, where classic elements, such as the roof and the wall, give way to a clear shape and merge with each other. The appearance was created through many precisely set spatial scenes of the interior and on the basis of seasonally changing local climatic conditions, as the snow load in winter requires the choice of a steep roof angle.
The idea of a “lookout tower” also determines the height of the house from the inside. It should resemble a tower rather than a house and should also serve as a hideaway. Instead of the usual two floors, three levels of action were created – each with its own character. At the highest level, the house serves as a studio, library and also as a refuge.
At this point, it is possible to let thoughts fly… A square window with a side of 2.5 m long frames the view of the treetops, the sky and the landscape. One floor lower, in addition to the bathroom and the open gallery space, we can also find sleeping corners here. The floor is partly formed by a net that establishes a connection with the lowest level both visually and acoustically and functions as a rest area. It’s a place where you can unleash your imagination. Sitting in a net and not having solid ground underfoot has something to do with the dream of flying, as well as looking up at the sky. The lowest level of the house is dominated by the main social area with a kitchen and a central fireplace – a place of meeting and lively conversation. The technical background is located in a partially sunken basement.
In the near future, the house will be inhabited throughout the year. For this reason, the house already has places to sleep for at least ten people. In addition, the energy concept of the house should be expanded in the future as well. It is currently heated by an open fireplace and electricity. In addition, the house is already equipped with connection points for the rooftop photovoltaic system and for vertical wind turbines that help realize the idea of energy self-sufficient life.

The predominant part of the work is residential and commercial architecture, but in addition, the studio was given the opportunity to design several projects in a mountain environment.
During its existence, the studio has received several awards in architectural competitions and their projects and realizations have been published in various professional media. So far, the studio’s greatest success has been winning an international architectural competition for the New Kežmarok Cottage in the High Tatras in Slovakia. 12 Most Beautiful Medieval Towns of Europe
12 Most Beautiful Medieval Towns of Europe
When planning a vacation to Europe, some of the first destinations that come to mind will be the teeming cities of Paris, London,
or Rome.
Each of these metropolises is incredible, but they are far from all that Europe has to offer.
By exploring some of the small towns across the continent, it is possible to see a more authentic, traditional side to Europe.
Here’s a look at the most beautiful medieval towns of Europe:
1-Girona.
Tumblr media
This elegant, provincial capital features a beautiful walled medieval quarter, with narrow cobbled alleyways, balconied houses, and shady little squares.
Clinging to the banks of the river Onyar, as it meanders through the center of town, is a long row of picturesque pastel-hued houses.
The Roman wall built in the first century BC was rebuilt in the mid-1300s on the foundation of the original structure.
Visitors can still climb the old towers.
The Cathedral and the 14th-century Gothic church also provide historical interest as does the old Jewish Quarter.
2-Mostar.
Tumblr media
Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is famous for its Old Bridge over the Neretva River; the name Mostar derives from the monster, meaning ‘bridge keeper.’ The bridge was built in 1556 under the orders of the occupying Ottomans but was destroyed 427 years later in 1993 by Croatian forces during the Balkan Wars.
Though it’s easily reachable on a day trip from neighboring Croatia, to get the most out of your visit to Mostar, the best thing to do is stay overnight.
The crowds of daytrippers trickle away, and the restaurants high above the river along cobbled streets light up.
3-Delft.
Tumblr media
A popular day trip destination from Amsterdam, it is easy to see what makes Delft such an attractive option.
With its lovely medieval center and picturesque canals crossed by brick bridges and lined with trees, the city is quaint and peaceful.
Its most famous son, the painter Johannes Vermeer, is just one of many who has sung its praises over the ages.
Famous for the distinctive blue and white tiles and ceramics that are produced here, visiting Delftware factories is popular among tourists.
But, despite its wealth of beautiful old buildings, it is the atmosphere rather than any particular the attraction that makes it worth visiting.
4-Brasov.
Tumblr media
With the Carpathian Mountains hemming it in on all sides, Brasov’s beautiful setting is complemented perfectly by its charming medieval center. It is not without reason that this is one of the most popular destinations in Romania.
Wandering around the fairytale-Esque Old Town is a lovely way to spend the day, as you pass fabulous baroque buildings, Gothic churches, and medieval watchtowers.
The main square has loads of cafes and restaurants if you simply want to grab a coffee and watch the world go by.
5-Assisi.
Tumblr media
A trip from Rome to the lovely hill region of Umbria will bring you to the medieval town of Assisi where you can explore significant religious sites, Roman ruins, and artistic beauty.
The town’s main attraction is the Basilica of St. Francis, the eternal resting place of Italy’s patron saint.
Most of the cobblestone streets in town lead to this beautiful cathedral where you can admire its exquisite architecture and interior ceilings that are embellished with stunning frescoes.
Surrounding the basilica, you will discover medieval houses and shops that are well worth a look.
6-Bern.
Tumblr media
Bern is a picturesque medieval city with a history that dates back to the 12th century, though it did not become a part of the Swiss Confederacy until the 16th century.
Its most famous attraction is an ancient clock tower with moving puppets, that once served as the western gate of the city.
Other popular sites in Bern include the Munster, a Gothic cathedral that rises from the old town, and its town hall.
The bear is the symbol of Bern, with several being kept in an open-air pit.
Shoppers will appreciate the old town that boasts four miles of arcades, making it one of the longest covered shopping areas in Europe.
7-Eze.
Tumblr media
Èze is a fortified medieval village that sits 1400 feet above sea level, overlooking the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.
With its lovely villas covered in bougainvillea and cobblestone streets, Eze is a charming and a very photogenic town.
Getting to the top of the village with its narrow cobblestone streets is a bit of a climb, but well worth the effort.
When you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a pretty cactus garden and stunning views of the Mediterranean.
Take time to visit the old church with its Egyptian cross, said to be a reminder of the  Phoenician temple that once stood there.
8-Tallinn.
Tumblr media
The capital of Estonia, Tallinn entices.
With its 14-century old town, built as a defense system, when you walk through the impressive medieval Viru Gates, you can feel the history right away.
Parts of Tallinn’s city wall are still walkable, complete with windows where you can glimpse the charming city below.
There are also historic churches such as Saint Olaf’s Church, dating back to the 1200s.
Tallinn has a hipster side too, which can be found at a reclaimed factory area where former warehouses now contain trendy restaurants, bars, and shops.
9-Heidelberg.
Tumblr media
With historic treasures like the medieval Old Bridge, the Heidelberg Castle, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Knight St. George House, it is no wonder that Heidelberg is a popular tourist attraction.
The city center’s main street is packed with pubs, restaurants, museums, art galleries, shops and markets selling the likes of beer steins, cuckoo clocks, and German sausages.
Home to Germany’s oldest university, Heidelberg’s long academic history can be retraced along the Philosopher’s Walk, a scenic footpath often walked by many earlier philosophers and professors.
10-Cesky Krumlov.
Tumblr media
In the South Bohemia region in the Czech Republic lies Cesky Krumlov.
This historic city is a supremely picturesque place to visit; think orange-tiled rooftops and the pretty riverside of the Vltava River, all flanked by green, rolling hills.
Made up of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, the town is overlooked by an impressive 13th-century castle.
It’s a town that should not be missed because of its sheer charm and beauty. Come in summer and stay till the sun goes down to watch the energetic city come alive with bars and restaurants.
11-Rovinj.
Tumblr media
On the west coast of the Istrian peninsula juts Rovinj into the Adriatic Sea.
More than 15,000 residents cram into this tiny town wedged into the edge of the peninsula.
Unlike many other ancient Croatian cities, Rovinj has no fortified walls; the outer ring houses feature front doors that open right up to the sea. A popular tourist destination, the old town is sprinkled with four-star hotels and restaurants where you’ll find great seafood.
Rovinj is still an authentic fishing port.
Take a boat trip to the nearby Rovinj archipelago to escape the crowds for a day.
12-York.
Tumblr media
The city of York is a truly ancient destination, and it boasts an impressive collection of architectural remains that date to Roman, medieval, and even Viking times.
Plenty of exciting sights compete for visitors’ attention as they stroll along the city’s cobblestone streets.
One of the city’s landmarks is York Minster.
This commanding stone cathedral is filled with remarkable works of art. The medieval Clifford’s Tower, which was built by William the Conqueror and rebuilt by Henry III in the 13th century, is a great vantage point for panoramic views around the city.
