Emo.Ticon: jfc kid how old are you?
rem.ix: thats not the question emo
LogicalLogan: Yes, I would be interested in forming a romantic relationship with Roman.
pat.pat: I'm happy just being friends with him!! But yeah, I'd want to.
MisterJ: I am dating Roman.
rem.ix: no youre not ro has said hes not dating anyone right now and you guys went out to dinner once
MisterJ: How would you know?
rem.ix: im his fucking brother and he tells me everything and im this close to telling him youre a dick and he can do better
MisterJ: Watch your tone.
rem.ix: i dont have to watch shit
LogicalLogan: Janus, stop antagonizing him.
MisterJ: I'm not antagonizing him, I'm correcting him. Are you all seriously okay with being spoken to like this?
Emo.Ticon: he's not being unreasonable j he's concerned about his brother
pat.pat: I mean, it's not great, but I understand it.
LogicalLogan: We all know how protective Roman is of Remus, it makes sense that the reverse would be true.
MisterJ: I suppose you're right. Still.
rem.ix: look
rem.ix: ro is the most important person in the world to me
rem.ix: i cant remember the last time he just did something for himself and wasnt guilty about how it affected me even if it didnt at all
rem.ix: and he seems to really care about all of you and he likes spending time with you
rem.ix: lately hes been really really stressed about school and work and everything and having all of you is great but hes worried about whatll happen if he picks one of you over the others or if you guys find out about each other
rem.ix: and this is kinda the first thing hes let himself have since he officially got custody of me
rem.ix: so
rem.ix: yeah
LogicalLogan: Thank you for sharing all of that with us, Remus. I understand your concern.
Emo.Ticon: we get it, the last thing we wanna do it make roman's life harder
pat.pat: Aww, that makes complete sense!!! I would be concerned too!!
MisterJ: I get that. I'm sorry if it felt like I wasn't taking you seriously, Remus. You're right, I do care for Roman very deeply and I want to support him as best I can.
rem.ix: sorry if i was being too rude
MisterJ: No hard feelings?
rem.ix: ye we good
Emo.Ticon: wait so is our consensus basically to not get butthurt when roman picks one of us? cause that sounds a bit too ya novel for me
pat.pat: Yeah, that feels weird.
MisterJ: The name of this conversation wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it, Remus?
rem.ix: i mean i dont know if any of you are poly and im not suggesting you all date ro at the same time
rem.ix: unless?
Emo.Ticon: you are 100% exactly like roman described you holy shit
MisterJ: I'm not sure if I agree with that either.
LogicalLogan: I have an idea.

Honestly, just watching Roman's face as he walks through the door is enough of a reward for Remus. He almost drops his backpack from shock.
"…Re?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Why are there four extra people in our apartment?"
Remus looks around. Logan and Janus are on the couch, looking over at Roman in the doorway. Patton and Virgil are in the kitchen; Patton's looking in the fridge and Virgil's toying with the blender someone gave them as a housewarming gift that they never used. "You said I could invite people over for a movie night."
"I thought you meant your friends," Roman says quietly and Remus shrugs.
"Your friends are my friends, right?" He looks at the others. "We're friends, right?"
"Sure."
"Yeah, I think so."
"We're friends!"
"That's correct."
"See? All friends. Come help us decide what we're watching, I wanna see the new Puss in Boots, but Janny wants to see that thriller thing."
"It's the next John Wick."
Roman mouths Janny and just blinks. Then he swallows and carefully sets down his backpack, opening the door and jerking his head outside. "Remus, can I talk to you for a moment?"
Yeah, he probably should've seen this coming. He gets up from the table and goes, ducking under Roman's arm out to the hallway. Roman makes sure his keys are in his pocket and calls out a quick One moment, please!
He shuts the door and just slumps against it, breathing hard.
"What's up?"
"Remus, what's going on?"
"We're trying to figure out what movie to watch. I suggested pizza 'cause we don't have enough for a big pasta bake and Patton and Virgil decided they were gonna see if we could make it work, but—"
"Remus."
At his brother's now is not the time to fuck with me voice, he gives in. "Ro, you've been so stressed recently, I know you have."
"And so you thought it would be a good idea to invite all of them over at once? Re, our apartment isn't even clean, we don't have much food left from grocery runs, we—"
"Ro, they care about you! You said you told them all stuff and they still cared—"
"It's one thing to say you care, it's another to actually come see it!" Roman scruffs a hand over his face. "God, Remus, why didn't you ask me?"
"Because I knew you'd say no!"
"Yes! For good reason!" He glances at the door and lowers his voice a bit. "Why did you do this? Are you—is it because I haven't been spending as much time with you because of them? I'm—I'm sorry, Re, I just—"
"What? No, no, that's not it, I—fuck, Ro, sit down before you pass out."
Roman collapses so quickly Remus almost cries out. But he's fine, he's just got his head in his hands. Remus cautiously sits down next to him, their shoulders resting together like they did when they were smaller, like they did in the court room, like they did when they first moved in here. It only takes a second for Roman to sling his arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer.
There's nowhere safer for him to be.
"I didn't invite them over because I wanted to embarrass you," he mumbles, fiddling with the hem of his shirt, "I invited them over because I know you've been stressed about all of them. They—it's not charity, Ro. I know you worry about it 'cause of—well, them—"
"I know."
"—but they really like you, Ro. Like, they all really care about you. And I…I dunno, I just wanted you to see that."
He shifts so he can look up at Roman's face.
"You try and do all of this on your own and you can't. You really can't. I know—I know you try and you do so much and I know you. I know you won't let me help 'cause you want me to be a kid still—"
"You are a kid."
"—but you can't do it on your own! And you're not alone, you've got me, you've got friends—you've got all of us. I wanted you to see that."
Roman looks at him with that expression he gets sometimes where he just looks at him like he loves him so much and it makes Remus's throat close a bit because he does. He really, really does and fuck, Remus loves him too.
"I'm sorry I didn't ask you," he mumbles, looking down, "do you…do you want them to go?"
"No," and shit, Roman's hoarse which means they're both about to start crying, "they…they can stay."
"…I like 'em, Roro. They're good."
A strangled laugh. "Yeah. I like them too."
"Which one's your favorite?"
A louder laugh and Roman squeezes him closer. "You're my favorite. Always will be."
"You don't get a choice with that."
"Yeah, I do," Roman says softly and shitfuck he can feel the tears forming, "and I make it every day. I'll keep making it, too."
"Goddamnit, you're gonna make me cry."
"Join the club, little octopus."
Well, that's a good enough invitation. Remus turns and wraps his arms and legs around his brother, holding him like he'll fall off the world if he lets go. Roman holds him back just as tightly, the top of his head starting to get damp. They both sniffle and try and pull the other closer.
"I love you, Re. So much. Thank you."
"I love you too, Roro."
They sit there for another minute before Roman pulls back and wipes his face. "God. You made me cry and now I've gotta go in there and talk to them? How dare you?"
"It's not my fault you're a sappy sack of shit!"
"Yes, it is!" Roman ruffles his hair. "And you're the one who wants to watch the new Puss in Boots movie, that's all sap, no tree."
"What, so you don't wanna watch it either?"
"I didn't say that."
"Ha!" Remus crows triumphantly, smacking Roman's shoulders lightly as Roman tries to grab him. "I knew it!"
"C'mere, you—" Roman throws him over his shoulder— "there."
"Hey! Put me down!"
"Nope. Wha—hey! Don't pull my hair!"
"Put me down!"
"Fine, fine." The moment Roman sets him on his feet, he almost sweeps him off them again, hugging him so tightly he can't breathe. "I have the best brother in the world."
"No," Remus manages, trying to hold Roman back, "I do."
"Tied for first?"
"Can we order pizza?"
"You got the money for it?"
"Make one of your boyfriends do it."
"They're not my boyfriends!"
"Yet."
"Re!"
"What? Go ask them!"
"No." Roman lets him go, hands on his hips. "We're gonna go inside, pick a movie, and maybe order pizza. Deal?"
"Deal!"
Roman softens a bit, reaching out to ruffle his hair. Remus shakes his head like a wet dog, making it messier on purpose until Roman laughs. He glances at the door and puts the key in the lock, opening it and striding back inside.
"Sorry about that."
"No worries," Logan says, "I think Patton and Virgil have reached a consensus."
"Pizza," Virgil proclaims, clapping his hands, "on account of I'm a lazy college student and I want pizza."
"I got it," Patton says, already pulling out his phone, "Domino's?"
"Yes, we're getting three extra larges."
"Works for me! Toppings: go!"
"Pineapple," Logan says as Janus says, "anything but pineapple."
"Okay, so pineapple on only one pizza, got it."
"Roman," Virgil calls as the others keep bickering, "how'd your meeting go?"
Remus looks up. That's right, Roman had that meeting with the Dean and Board today about the scholarship. Roman takes a deep breath.
"They're letting me keep it," he says breathlessly, "same scholarship, same amount of financial aid, same grades."
Virgil whoops so loudly it makes Remus's ears hurt. Of course, then the others want to know what he's so happy about and then they're celebrating too.
"You pick the movie, then," Janus says, "you've earned it."
Roman pauses, glancing around as if someone's going to object, only to see them all looking at him expectantly. He doesn't seem to know what to do with that. Then he glances at Remus.
See, Remus tries to say silently, you've got people. You're not alone. We're all here for you. See?
The way Roman's smile softens says yes, I see.
"Puss in Boots it is."
"Yes!"
"Great. Janus, help me set it up?"
"Sure."
"Roman, what do you want on your pizza?"
As long as we stick together, Remus thinks as he watches Roman be happier and more at ease than he's seen in a long, long time, we'll all be okay.

silly soulmate au prompt: the characters can see all colors except for the one of their soulmates eyes until they meet them? (from @virgeandhis-pocket-protector)
@virgeandhis-pocket-protector hi :)
Over The Rainbow (1/4) - Patton
-----
Reds oranges and pinks almost always took centre stage in his drawings and paintings - after all, they were the only colours Roman could see, but the backgrounds were always made up of shades of grey - for him - that would be bright, vibrant colours for everyone else. They represented how he saw the world, and being honest… Roman was a little scared for it to change.
Later on, he would wonder why he worried.
He saw blue first.
----
| Ao3 | Next Chapter -> |
Fic Warnings: Nothing overarching aside from Remus being himself - any chapter-specific warnings will be in the notes.
Pairings: DLAMP, platonic creativitwins.
Notes:
This one got away from me a little and now I have a whole college/soulmate au. oops?
I've sat down and written almost 5k in one session... oops???
Anyway, this is eventual DLAMP! Each chapter we get a new soulmate added to the pile :))
I really hope you enjoy!
----
Roman couldn’t see colour.
That was a common soulmate tell, and he knew it was a soulmate tell and not regular colourblindness because he coud see pink and red just fine.
What was odd about Roman was just how many colours he couldn’t see.
He’d been drilled enough by his family and friends - and even a colourblind specialist to make sure this wasn’t just regular colour blindness - to determine which colours he couldn’t see, which was… most of them.
They’d determined he must have at lest two soulmates - if both of them happened to have heterochromia - or at lesat five if they didn’t. There was always the chance for there to be more than that, considering many people had the same eye colours. Though having five was rare enough anyway. Even having two soulmates was rare enough.
Roman didn’t know how to feel about it. Not entirely.
He was excited to meet his soulmates - of course he wss! He was Roman, for goodness sake, he wrote romantic poems in hopes that he might recite them to his soulmates whenever he was to meet them. He read romance novel upon romance novel that included soulmates meeting in wondrous ways, he was so excited to meet them.
Especially the ones with Violet and Yellow eyes, because those certainty weren’t common eye colours - hell, even the doctor had been surprised - by the yellow especially, since purple was at least possible if not rare.
So yes, as Roman prepared to move states for college, he was excited to find his soulmates.
But he had also… struggled.
Roman was an artist. People told him he had a talent with pencils and paints. He loved putting paint down on a canvas, creating shapes and patterns with his brushes - and he’d found a way to make colourblindness almost part of his brand.
In college Roman was sharing a dorm room with his twin brother. He’d considered when applying that rooming with a stranger might be a good idea - a way to make a friend, or maybe even meet a soulmate if he was lucky - but in the end he’d backed out. He was glad Remus was coming to college with him, and while he was near certain that sharing a bedroom with his brother wasn’t going to be amazing, it would be… better, than a complete stranger.
He’d immediately gone about applying for jobs on campus - god knows he needed the money - and that’s where he’d come across Blue, or as he now knew them, Patton.
It was a rather sunny Saturday morning, and he’d been invited to a campus cafe for an interview after he’d submitted his application a few days ago. The place was nice - Roman had no idea if the walls were actually grey, or if they were just painted a colour he couldn’t see, but it was nicely decorated and smelled like fresh coffee and spice - as a coffee shop should.
The person behind the counter was currently wiping down the espresso machine - the morning rush had died down by now so the shop wasn’t so busy. They had curly hair that brushed their jaw in a pale grey - Roman couldn’t know what colour it really was, but he suspected blonde from the lightness. They were turned away from him now, but Roman couldn’t help but still think they were pretty.
“Excuse me?” Roman said as he approacthed the counter, “I have a job inter- holy shit!”
“Language!” The person with sparkling blue eyes seemed to say almost on instinct, before gasping in surprise, “You’re orange!”
“What- oh! Yes! You’re blue!” Roman said, face breaking into a bright smile as he blinked his amber eyes, “And so are the walls in here, oh my goodness!”
The barista - who’s nametag read ‘Patton’ leant across the counter, reaching for him, and Roman stepped closer to take his hands, “This is amazing! I didn’t expect to meet you here - oh! I’m Patton, um, I’m majoring in children’s education, and, uh, uh, what else? Well obviously I work in this shop-”
Roman chuckled, “Easy there - I’m sure we can get to know each other properly soon? I’m Roman, uh- do you have a napkin?”
“Yes, why?” Patton asked, passing him a napkin, on which Roman wrote down his name and phone number in sparkly red gel pen - he carried it everywhere, just in case.
“I have a job interview I really need to get to,” Roman said, “But here, take this, and we’ll get coffee soon, yeah?”
“Absolutely! Oh I’m so excited - wait - you’re the guy here for the job interview? Oh my gosh I’m so sorry! I’ve made you late!”
Roman shook his head, “No worries, really, I’m actually quite glad about this particular distraction.”
He winked and then grinned as he watched Patton’s face go red as they started spluttering, before shaking their hands and giggling.
“I’ll um, I’ll be back with the manager,” Patton squeaked, before running out of a side door in about three seconds flat. Roman couldn’t help but chuckle, unable to keep the grin off of his face - he’d met the first one of his soulmates! Oh he couldn’t wait to tell Remus about this!
“So,” Patton said, elongating the vowel as they leant forward to look at Roman, who laughed. They’d gotten coffee as promised, but decided to take a walk through the campus instead of sitting to drink it, “Have… you met any of the others yet?”
Roman took a sip from his coffee, smiling at Patton before looking up at the bright blue sky - Roman hadn’t been able to stop staring at the sky since he’d met Patton, he’d probably painted it enough to make anyone else bored of seeing it by this point.
“Not yet,” Roman answered with a wistful sigh, “I wonder if we share them all?”
“Id hope we do!” Patton said, nearly hopping with optimism, “I mean, I know some poly people prefer like - relationship chains, but I like it when everyone’s dating everyone, so that would be my ideal - you?”
“Oh same, I think I’d get jealous if my partners were dating people I wasn’t also dating,” Roman nodded, “So we’re still looking for… maybe four people?”
“I still can’t see green, purple, brown or yellow,” Patton said, bouncing on the balls of their feet as they walked, “Oh I can’t wait to see how pretty rainbows are! Or the grass! I’ve been told the grass and trees look lovely.”
Roman couldn’t help but smile at the other’s excitement, “Me too-! I really want to make a big painting symbolising all of us once we’ve all met - using all the colours properly.”
“You paint?” Patton gasped, grabbing Roman’s arm with one hand to stabilise themself as they almost tripped, “That’s so neat! I’m so awful at art.”
“I do!” Roman nodded, before glancing up at the sky as he got another idea… for later, “I’m sure you’re not that bad?”
“I am,” Patton chuckled, “I am that bad, thanks for trying to reassure me, though.”
Roman shook his head, “Maybe I can show you some things.”
“Maybe!” Patton grinned, “That could be fun! Oh - what’s your major?”
Immediately, Roman brightened, “I’m doing theatre, with minors in creative writing and illustration.”
“Wow!” Patton gasped, “That’s a lot! You look happy with it! Are you in the theatre club? I know my roomie Remy is part of it.”
“You’re roommates with Remy?” Roman asked, shocked, “I’m genuinely surprised you’re still sane.”
“Awee c’mon, he’s not that bad,” Patton waved a hand, “I take it that’s a yes?”
“Yeah! I’ve only been to one meeting so far though.” Roman grinned, “But Remy already seems like… he had a lot of character.”
“You can say that again,” Patton giggled, “Okay - next question…. Hmm…. thoughts on cats?”
“Hello, I’m-”
“Patton, the soulmate Ro’s been raving about nonstop the past two weeks to the point where I actually went outside to sleep in the dumpster, yea, I know who you are,” Roman’s twin brother interrupted Patton, his giggles counteracting the words, “Not that I wouldn't’ve done that anyway.”
“Remus!” Roman hissed, “You’re gonna scare him off!”
Remus rolled his eyes, “I’m not gonna censor myself for your fucking soulamte-”
“Language-”
“-If Patty here can’t handle me he doesn’t deserve you,” Remus continued as though Patton hadn’t even spoken, he walked over and plopped down on his messy bed, “So, have you two sucked face yet or what? Any kinky shit?”
“ Remus! ” Roman cried as Patton squeaked and covered their face to hide the dark blush, Roman did nothing to hide the equally vivid blush on his own face, “ No! ”
“Awee that sucks,” Remus huffed, “What have you two even been doing if you haven’t fucked yet? It’s been like - a month.”
Roman just sighed, “Patton, you don’t have to listen to him.”
“It’s- it’s okay,” Patton said, chuckling awkwardly, “Um, yeah, it’s uh, it’s nice to meet you, Remus.”
“Wow!” Remus grinned, “This guy really is resilient! Maybe he does like you after all, Ro!”
“Of course I like Roman!” Patton yelped, “We just - we wanna wait for a relationship to happen naturally, because being a soulmate doesn’t mean you have to rush into a relationship - and besides, we still have others to meet! I don’t want them to feel left out!”
Remus made a gagging noise before rolling his eyes at Roman, “You really had to find the sunshine one first? Not like - I dunno, someone cool?”
Roman just sighed, “Patton I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay!” Patton giggled, winking at Roman before bounding over to sit on Roman’s bed across from Remus, “So, you wanna hear about the time I beat up a kid outside a Denny’s in highschool?”
“ Do I! ” Remus gasped, grinning and leaning forwards so far that Roman thought he might fall off of his bed - he seemingly pulled a bag of popcorn from… somewhere as Patton began to explain and Roman could already tell that they’d won Remus over with this one.
Roman couldn’t help but sit down at his desk to listen intently too.
Apparently, the kid in question had been in Patton’s year - a junior, at the time - and had been bullying a few freshmen Patton had been decent friends with at the time. Somehow, Patton defending the kids had gone far enough that they ended up fighting the kid outside a Denny’s at night - and winning, mind you. The kid hadn’t done much bullying after that.
they’d become something of an older brother figure to the younger teens in highschool - with the teachers not wanting to do anything about reported bullying, someone had to step in. Honestly, Roman was impressed by the dedication that Patton seemed to have for taking care of people.
“That,” Roman said once Patton had finished their story, face a flustered red, “Was…. so unexpected.”
“Not bad, though, right?” Patton asked, worried, “I mean - maybe I should’ve have gotten physical-”
“No man!” Remus interrupted, “That’s so fucking cool, dude, how the hell did you win a fight like that? You look like a breeze could knock you over!”
“Oh, well, I uh, I did a lot of sports as a kid - swimming, gymnastics, some soccer,” Patton listed, “So I got pretty strong, and my mums made sure I knew self defense just in case…”
“That is awesome ,” Roman grinned, “I’m glad our soulmates can count on us to protect them!”
“Aboslutely!” Patton nodded rapidly, “I wouldn’t let anyone hurt any of you!”
“Hear hear,” Roman nodded.
“If anyone hurts either of you I will rip their throats out,” Remus cackled, “With my teeth .”
“Glad to know you got our backs, buddy,” Patton said, giving Remus a thumbs up.
Yeah, Roman thought, t his might work out alright after all.

Just a short chapter I wrote for new year.
CW: child abandonment, homelessness
Pairings: romantic/platonic DLAMP, romantic anxceit
Happy New Year everyone, I hope you have a great day/night and I hope 2021 brings everyone better tidings <3
Masterpost
Janus ignored the urge to straighten his bowtie before walking up the small path that led to the house. As much as he wished he could make some final adjustments to his look, his hands were currently full, with flowers on one side and his cane on the other. He figured dropping either to fiddle with his bowtie would be a rather ridiculous look.
It would be fine, he told himself. It was just a small celebration at their house, it didn't matter how he looked. They loved him, they wouldn’t judge him.
And oh, those words. They loved him.
The thought made him simultaneously want to leap with happiness and run for the hills as fast as he could. It was so terrifyingly new and at the same time it felt so comfortably familiar. The phone calls that lasted way longer than they should. The bad days when all of them came over and baked him bread. The banter over the comms when he was too tired to join in on patrol. They loved him.
A raven haired head popping itself out the door distracted him from his brooding.
“Dude, are you just gonna spend the whole evening standing in our garden or are you gonna come in?” Virgil asked.
“I was just admiring the flowers,” Janus drawled.
Virgil raised a disbelieving eyebrow.
“Come in, everyone’s waiting for you.”
He stepped inside and handed Virgil the flowers.
“Aww, are those for us? How sweet,” Virgil cooed.
Janus definitely didn’t blush. “It’s polite.”
“It’s romantic,” Virgil teased.
“Virgil,” Janus sighed, trying to sound exasperated but only managing to sound fond.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop. Come on, I need to start frying the gulab jamun.”
“You’re making gulab jamun?” Janus asked, pleasantly surprised. They were apparently a famed treat in this household.
“Yeah,” Virgil stopped when he walked into Roman.
“And now he shows up,” Virgil snarked “Here, go put these in a vase, I have dessert to attend to.” He shoved the flowers into Roman’s hands and quickly disappeared into the kitchen.
Roman beamed at Janus.
“Hello darling,” He purred “You look absolutely stunning.”
“You are not allowed to use that nickname, it’s mine, I licensed it,” Janus protested.
“Oh, but I just love the way it flusters you, darling.”
Janus could feel the heat creeping all the way from under his collar up to his cheeks. Roman was definitely getting back at him for all the times Janus had flustered him in costume.
“Roman, stop,” Janus sighed as he gently pushed his shoulder.
Roman just chuckled and led him into the living room, where Logan was arranging some snacks.
“Guess who arrived!” Roman announced to the entire house.
Logan looked over and smiled brightly.
“Hello Janus, you look good.”
“As do you,” Janus complimented as he walked over to shake his hand. Logan ignored the proffered hand and pulled him into a hug.
Well, okay. He hadn’t seen that one coming.
Of all four of them, Logan was the least keen on physical contact. Patton and Roman were always going in for surprise hugs and even Virgil would frequently rest his head on Janus’s shoulder. But Janus had only ever seen Logan hug his boyfriends. And that one memorable time when Janus had nearly drowned and Logan had cuddled him to keep him warm, but he really prefered not to think about that.
“Will you be joining us for patrol?” Logan asked when he pulled away.
“No, not today.” Janus lifted his cane a bit to illustrate his point.
Logan nodded understandingly. “We’ll be happy to have you on comms for tonight.”
Janus made his way into the kitchen, where Patton was sliding something into the oven as Roman bothered him.
“You can’t bake something at 1800 degrees, Roman, that’s not how baking works.” Patton sighed. He noticed Janus entering the kitchen and beamed at him.
“Dee!” Patton smiled at him. “I’m so happy you’re here. Food’s nearly ready. ”
“Why not? 10 minutes at 180 degrees equals 1 minute at 1800 degrees. That’s how math works.” Roman interjected.
“Well, it’s not how ovens work,” Virgil groaned, from where he was bent over the frying pan, a little closer to the hot oil than was probably safe.
“If you guys would just listen to me, food would be ready in a minute,” Roman sighed.
“Virgil’s right, sweetie, that’s not how ovens work,” Patton said.
Virgil stuck his tongue out.
“Very mature,” Janus laughed.
Eventually, when all the food had been baked at an acceptable temperature, they gathered around the table.
“So, does anyone have any new year’s resolutions?” Patton asked them.
“New year’s resolutions are just a festive way of lying to yourself. Nobody actually keeps them,” Janus said.
“See! He gets it,” Virgil said triumphantly.
“Come on,” Patton pleaded, “humour me.”
Virgil sighed and rolled his eyes, but Janus could see the fondness in them.
“Well, my new year’s resolution is to take more time to read books I’ve been meaning to read. I have a whole pile of interesting paperbacks,” Logan went first.
“Of course you would choose something so nerdy,” Roman teased, “My resolution is to spend as much time as possible with you, my loves,” He swept a grand gesture over the room and Janus tried not to think about how he was somehow included in that, “and I vow to give you all the kisses and hugs you deserve.”
“Well, next year I resolve to make better bad decisions and to remember to write 2021 instead of 2020,” Patton chimed in with a bright smile, “but in all seriousness, I hope to spend more time writing next year and maybe sign up for some art classes.”
“That’s a great idea, Pat, I might join you for those,” Virgil said.
“See, now you have some new year’s resolutions too.”
“What about you, Janus?” Logan questioned.
“Well, I guess if I have to, I resolve not to kill as many people this year,” He answered sarcastically.
Patton shot him a look. “Try again.”
“Fine,” Janus sighed, “I resolve to read more books, I guess.”
“Splendid resolutions, my dear lord of the lies,” Roman praised.
“Are we going to eat now? We have to patrol in a few hours,” Virgil complained.
“As always, you really have your priorities sorted, Virgil,” Logan said teasingly.
Logan shrugged himself into his costume with precise movements and fastened the cloak at his neck.
“You know, I really don’t get the cloak. Isn’t it awfully impractical?” Janus asked him from where he was draped against the door frame.
“Maybe, but I distinctly remember it coming in handy when you nearly died of hypothermia. How would people say it? It saved you ass?” Logan answered smugly.
“That was one time, you can’t tell me you wear a ridiculous cape,”
“Cloak.”
“Whatever, because someone might fall into the harbour. How often does that even happen?”
“More than you’d think. Also, Batman wears a cloak.”
“Batman is designed by nerds who don’t even know how to throw a punch, it’s a wonder you haven’t tripped over it yet when vaulting over rooftops.”
“Unlike some people who don’t need a cloak to trip when vaulting over rooftops?” Logan asked, voice full of faux innocence.
Janus growled exasperatedly and punched his arm, in the friendly way.
“As much as I love hearing you two bicker, we do need to start patrol,” Roman interrupted.
“Bye, Dee!” Patton hugged him and gave him a quick kiss on the nose before bustling out the door.
Roman and Logan followed in quick succession, pressing kisses to his cheek and forehead. They sauntered out of the room, leaving him reeling with the ease they had done that.
Virgil smirked up at him from where he was sitting at the computer, looking over some police reports.
“What?” Janus asked him.
“Nothing,” Virgil replied with a shit eating grin, “You just look awfully cute when you blush.”
“I’m not cute,” Janus snarled.
“Whatever you say,” Virgil replied as he walked past him. He stopped for a moment, staring into Janus’s eyes. His look didn’t bode well for Janus. He placed a gentle hand on the back of Janus’s neck and then pulled him close.
“Is this okay?” He asked, his eyes drifting to Janus’s lips.
“Very,” Janus managed, his voice a little rough.
Virgil leaned forward and pressed a soft but insistent kiss on his lips. Janus felt himself leaning into it, the sweet taste of honey and saffron overwhelming his senses.
After what felt like a mere fraction of a second, Virgil pulled away. Janus made a small noise of protest and Virgil chuckled.
“Later,” He promised, “I have to go patrol now.”
He walked out the room, leaving Janus feeling lightheaded and wondering if the others were as good at kissing as Virgil. He sincerely hoped so.
~
Patrol was surprisingly uneventful. Generally, the statistics indicated there was a rise in crime around the holiday period. New year itself was always quite a hazardous day, with the large crowd of people out at late hours and the fireworks masking any sounds that could give you away.
Yet this year, Logan had found himself inexplicably looking out to the new year. Maybe it was the fact that a certain former villain had enthusiastically agreed to come over and celebrate.
Whatever the reason, the city had decided to grace them with a calm night and Logan sat on a rooftop ledge, watching Virgil teach Patton a back handspring on the adjoining rooftop.
“Can you do one of those?” Janus asked him over the comms as they watched Patton fall onto his back for the third time.
“They’re not too hard.”
“That doesn’t answer the question, nerd,” Roman chimed into the conversation from where he was checking out an alleyway somewhere.
“I’m sure I could manage it,” Logan sighed.
“Like Patton’s managing this one?” Virgil quipped as Patton landed on the ground once more. Logan was incredibly grateful for the shock absorbent breastplate he wore.
“I nearly got that one!”
“Sure, pat.”
“Shit,” He heard Roman hiss through the comms.
“What?” Janus’s voice was immediately on edge and Logan heard the familiar clicking of keys, telling him Janus was probably pulling up the live feed from Roman’s mask.
“Oh,” He said.
“What’s going on?” Patton asked, righting himself from the wet rooftop.
“A kid,” Roman gasped.
Logan felt his heart clench.
“Is he hurt?” Virgil asked.
“No, not as far as we can see, but he does look malnourished,” Janus explained.
Logan got up and quickly swung down from the rooftop, the others right behind him.
They entered the alleyway, where Roman was crouched in the corner, whispering quietly.
He looked up and gestured for them to stay back. They obliged, Patton sitting down against a wall as Virgil walked a bit further back to make sure no one would enter the small street.
Logan leant against a dumpster bin, trying not to look too threatening.
“It’s alright, we won’t hurt you. Could you just tell me your name?” Roman asked gently.
“My mom told me never to give a stranger my name,” The kid deadpanned.
Logan smiled, if the kid was quipping back, he couldn’t be in too bad a shape.
“Touché” Roman chuckled, “you can call me prince.”
“Like the singer?” The kid asked with an audible chuckle.
“No,” Roman sighed and Logan heard Patton giggle.
“Well, you probably should have chosen a better name then.”
“Probably,” Roman said, “At least give me something I can call you, if you’re not gonna tell me your name.”
The kid thought for a moment. “Fine,” he drawled, “You can call me J.”
“Ok, well J, that corner doesn’t look all that comfortable, if you would come with us, I’m sure we could find you more suitable lodgings.”
“No!” J snapped, fear colouring his voice.
“Why not?” Roman asked, clearly taken aback.
“You’ll just stick me in the system and... they don’t want me there.” J choked up a bit and Logan saw Patton’s eyes fill with sympathy.
“No, we won’t,” Roman promised.
“Oh yeah? What’re you gonna do with me then? Nobody wants some abandoned street rat.” J sighed bitterly. Logan ached at how he seemed to have given up any hope of someone caring for him. The poor kid had clearly been through too much in his life.
“Do you really have no one left?” Roman asked.
“Do you think I’d be sleeping on the streets if someone still cared about me?”
Roman looked back at them helplessly.
“Isn’t there anywhere he could stay on short notice?” Virgil asked.
“I have people,” Janus interjected quietly.
“Dee, no!” Patton exclaimed, “we’re not going to drop some kid off with those thugs you work with.”
“Not like that,” Janus sighed and Logan could almost see him pinching the bridge of his nose, “I know someone who works for me who’s really good with kids. He and his partner have fostered kids before. I think they could help him.”
“Really? You think he’d just be okay with it if we rolled up with a kid?”
“I’d have to discuss it with him first, but I’m certain we can find a home for J, if not with this guy, we’ll definitely find someone else.”
“I could ask my moms,” Patton conceded,” I don’t think they’re up for another kid, but they might know someone who wants to take care of him.”
“And what for tonight? We can’t really show up at someone’s house and just drop him off.” Virgil said.
“Take him to our home,” Logan suggested.
“Are you crazy? That’s a huge security risk,” Virgil burst out.
“We can’t just leave him in the cold to freeze,” Patton protested.
“I have a safe house near where you are, just take him there,” Janus interjected.
“Is that settled then?” Roman asked them from where he was still crouched in the corner, the annoyance clear in his voice.
“Yeah, I think so,” Patton replied.
“Okay kid, let's get moving. We’re taking you to a safehouse near here,” Roman told him.
“Did you explain everything to him?” Logan asked, he really hadn’t heard Roman say anything.
“Of course, you guys were too busy bickering to notice.”
J still regarded them warily and Logan was vaguely worried he was going to bolt the moment they got out of the alleyway.
“Hey,” Logan said, trying not to sound too awkward, “we’re not just going to abandon you to the system. We're heroes and that means we’ll find a way to help anyone.”
J just looked up at him with an unimpressed expression. “Right.” He shouldered past Logan, heading to where Virgil was waiting.
Patton quickly caught up to them, probably because Virgil was looking at the kid like he wanted to flee to the nearest rooftop.
“So you’re really not gonna tell us your name?”
“No.”
“You guys want me to head to the safe house too?” Janus asked, ignoring their chatter.
“We’d love that,” Roman beamed, “We might even be just in time for the new year.”
They got J settled on the ratty couch in the squalid safe house. It wasn’t a terrible safe house, it was actually quite clean. It just clearly wasn’t used for much except the occasional emergency.
Janus arrived quickly, dropping a bag filled with what Logan presumed was food.
J froze when he saw Janus. “Deceit?” He asked and Logan felt his stomach plummet. Of course the kid would be afraid, they had trapped him in a small space together with the city’s most notorious crime lord. It didn’t matter that Janus had never and would never harm a child, his reputation was terrifying enough.
But inexplicably, the kid’s shoulders relaxed and he seemed moderately more at ease.
“You know, most people don’t look so at ease in my presence,” Janus said, clearly also puzzled by the reaction.
J shrugged. “You’re not that bad, you’ve helped a lot of my friends, gave them jobs and places to stay. You do more for the street kids of this city than these heroes.”
Roman gasped in mock offence. Logan shrugged. It made sense, they didn’t have the resources or connections to help kids like J, but Janus had been putting an effort into helping the worst off in their city for years. It seemed his efforts hadn’t gone as unnoticed as they had previously assumed.
Janus grinned at them, his expression smug and then grabbed something from the bag.
“Here,” He held out a soft sweater, “this is for you, it would be a shame if we went through all the trouble of getting you here and then you died from hypothermia.”
“You could just invest in a space heater for this place,” Virgil complained.
“Sure, because this space is used so often. It definitely isn’t a waste of money to purchase heaters for all those safe houses I barely use,” Janus snarked.
J ignored their bickering and sauntered over to the window, pulling the sweater over his head.
“Hey, guys,” Patton interrupted, “I think it’s time.”
Logan looked at the time on the corner of his display. He was right, the clock told him there was only one minute left of this year.
They all gathered round the window, looking out over the city.
“To new beginnings,” Patton announced.
“To new beginnings,” They all replied. J just rolled his eyes.
Logan felt Patton clutch his arm and Janus loop an arm around his waist as bright fireworks exploded over the city skyline. He looked over at his friends, how they stood gathered together, their faces awash with the colours of the fireworks.
And he looked at J, the young kid who was staring at the fireworks as if they were something magical, his hands tangled in the sleeves of his sweater.
Logan promised himself he would do everything to get him a good home, he deserved so much more than the world had given him.
New beginnings, it was a fitting sentiment.

Ooo prompts? #14 of grumpy affectionate? DLAMP?? Maybe???
Anon, you are speaking my language!!
14. “Ew. Get away from me. No– not you. You stay.”
-
Patton and Roman are kissing again.
They like doing that, Logan thinks, more than he or Virgil or Janus. He supposes it is because they are the romantic sides, and express their love like that, through soft touches and physical affection and, well, kisses.
“Ew, affection,” Virgil grumbles, but there is something soft in his eyes, and it isn’t like he can say a word anyways, his head on Janus’ lap as their boyfriend runs his fingers through Anxiety’s curls, the book he had been reading to Logan open on his lap. “Disgusting.”
“Keep reading,” Logan says impatiently, turning from where he is seated on the floor to poke at Virgil’s cheek. His hand is batted away, Janus letting out a snort of laughter above them, and Logan pouts, something he does hardly ever. Well, except when someone steals his Crofters, or when his onesie is in the wash, or when his boyfriend stops reading to him in the middle of the best part, Virgil-
“You know you love us, Sweety Todd,” Roman retorts, winking, and Logan is pretty all three of the sides not currently curled together in the armchair roll their eyes.
“I think he’s just jealous, Roro,” Patton chirps, extricating himself from said armchair with some difficulty. He manages it, though, and approaches the couch, dimples deep as he grins down at Virgil. “Do you want kisses, too, sweetheart?”
“Ew,” Virgil says again, sticking out his tongue. “Get away from me.”
Janus moves as if he is planning on “getting away”, as Virgil so puts it, as well, and Virgil makes an angry noise. “No— not you. You stay.”
“Should I stay, as well, or should I go find a boyfriend that will actually read to me?” Logan mutters grumpily, crossing his arms over his chest, mostly in jest. Mostly.
Virgil picks up the book again in response, resuming from where he’d left off, and one of Janus’ other hands finds itself a place in Logan’s hair, too. He raises an eyebrow at the snake-like side, who just laughs.
“You all don’t have such nice hair,” Janus coos, blowing Logan a kiss with yet another one of his arms. “Let me have my fun, love.”
Logan rolls his eyes again, but finds himself leaning into the touch anyways, gaze on where Patton and Roman have moved themselves to squeeze into the remaining room on the couch. There’s not a lot left, but they make it work, Roman’s legs tangling with Virgil’s and Patton sitting atop the cushions, where Virgil usually perches.
Patton and Roman like their displays of physical affection, he thinks, closing his eyes with a sigh. Janus loves his words, his vows and promises and sweet nothings, and Virgil seems shellshocked every time they give or do something for him he perceives as ‘thoughtful’, be it a specially curated playlist or memorization of anxiety techniques or his room filled with bouquets of lavender.
As for Logan, however, he thinks this is where he finds his love. Surrounded by his famILY, (as the others insist on calling it, miscapitalization and all), their voices filling the quiet around him, knowing, without having to see or even hear them, that they are there.
There for him, he thinks, nearly giddy.
“And the hero stood up, and she looked across the battlefield to see the woman waiting, she who had always waited,” Virgil reads. “And for the first time, (but not the last, never the last, not for a very long time) she said ‘I’m sorry,’ and she said ‘I love you.’ And so they waited no longer, the woman in the woods and the woman in the water, and as she rushed to meet the only person she had ever loved, she wondered briefly if this was their happy ending.”
“Was it?” asks Roman, who has never been able to wait, and who Logan loves not despite but for his impatience.
“It was a happy ending, their first, but not the last. One of many tiny endings and beginnings, pockets of joy that would fill their days. And so they lived happily ever after, a life filled with adventures and indescribable joy, and as they had wished, they were together through it all. The end,” Virgil finishes, and Logan smiles as the cacophony of noise erupts around him, Patton and Janus and Roman and Virgil all discussing the story, their quiet night briefly interrupted, but no less wonderful for it.
Together through it all, Logic thinks, and finally opens his eyes once more, turning slightly so he can see these men he loves. I’d like that.
He’s pretty sure Patton knows what he’s thinking, from the way he smiles, but that’s okay. It’s nothing new, this love Logan feels for them, and he finds he rather likes that they know.
“I love you,” he says anyways, because Logic is all about finding the truth, about eradicating uncertainty, and there is no room for question about that. “Always.”
“We love you too, darling,” Janus says softly, and Roman reaches out to entwine his fingers with Logan’s own, Patton blowing him a kiss and Virgil waves his hand with a smile to summon yet another book, one Logan recognizes as his Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes.
Together through it all. And they will be, these sides of Thomas Sanders, for their happy ending, the one with no visible end in sight?
Well, that would have to be each other.
Hope you enjoy, anon!!! <3

for the fake fic titles, we tell the stories we need to hear (like we can get what we have lost back) is one with a lot of angst potential that I'd love to hear your take on!
DLAMP college au - Janus isn’t interested in sharing his Tragic Backstory, thanks, so he lies about his home life. The lie gets increasingly more elaborate, the hole dug deeper, until it eventually culminates in him either having to come clean or literally hire some actors to pull this off
he does consider the second option and his brother Remy calls him an absolute idiot, so now all five of them are crammed in a car on the way to Janus’s house and he has to figure out a way to admit the truth before they get there and they Do Not In Fact find a 2.5 kids-picket fence-and-dog combo
Thank you for all the fake titles! I’m not taking anymore but i hope yall had fun
(I may write these, but feel free to take these as prompts anyway - two cakes!)

ao3: “your true colors” rating: T warnings: sympathetic deceit, sympathetic remus, dlamp genre: fluff description: Deceit has a wish. ( @tsshipmonth2020 prompt: dlamp) (set in the same universe as “outside, looking in”)
Deceit wants.
He knows it's stupid. The others would never want someone like- well, someone like him. They tolerate him now and he can be grateful for that, even if he knows that it's only to keep Thomas functioning on an even keel. He's never tried to duck out (his self preservation is too well ingrained), but he knows that if he did, they'd likely only go after him because of Thomas.
He doesn't think they're lying about accepting him now, he'd know if they were, but well, it's pretty clear, isn't it? He's Deceit. He's not the same kind of part of Thomas's personality, not like the others. Logic and Creativity and Morality. Even Anxiety. Thomas needs them. It's a shame, he thinks sometimes, that he's still required, too.
And now the others are together. Even Virgil, and that's a unique kind of hurt, exquisitely sharp. He can't count the number of times he's walked in on them all snuggling on the couch or kissing in the kitchen or murmuring sweet nothings in the hallways. Not even the bathroom is safe, as he discovered one memorable day when he just wanted to brush his teeth and instead got a firsthand glance at Roman inhaling Patton's mouth. He doesn't think they even noticed he was there. They always invite him to cuddle, too, always encourage him to come to movie nights, to eat meals with them, but he can take a hint. He'll be nothing more than a fifth wheel and he can't stand that, not when his own feelings tighten his throat and cramp his stomach. Not when he can't even lie to himself anymore about just how he feels.
Which brings him to now. He sighs, curling up tighter under his heap of blankets and trying to pretend they're warm enough to chase away the chill. Even Remus has gone to this movie night (although Deceit is terribly afraid he's done it in the buff again). He couldn't force himself to if he tried. His stomach churns with nausea at even the thought of seeing them all laughing and sharing those tiny, sweet moments that only lovers can. That he will never, ever be privy to, no matter how hard he tries.
And he's supposed to just accept it, he reflects gloomily, yanking his gloves off and throwing them across the room. The scales meandering across his flesh seem to mock him. Yet another reason no one would want to be with him. He used to like his scales, before the others took to treating him like something monstrous. Creepy snake face still finds its way into his self-deprecating thoughts, no matter how many times Roman's apologized for it. Apologies don't mean much in the dead of night, when your tear tracks have frozen on your face and it feels like nothing can fill the sudden hollow in your middle.
Deceit sighs, pulling out his phone to check the time. With any luck, the movie night will break up soon or they'll go to sleep, and he can slip down to the kitchen for some food. He only picked at dinner, his nerves too high strung for anything else (and besides, pleading off with ill health always makes for a handy excuse), and he has to admit that he's a little hungry now.
He stands up, ready to peer down the hallway and do a touch of reconnaissance, when a timid knock sounds on the door.
"Who is it?" He calls, careful to keep a fretful touch in his tone.
"Logan," comes the answer. "I wanted to check on you and see if you were still feeling unwell."
"I'm fine," Deceit says immediately, before wincing. Well, that was a stupid thing to say. No matter which way Logan ended up taking it, he knows that he won't like it.
"Deceit, I would like to check on you," Logan warns. Before Deceit can jump back into bed, the door clicks open and Deceit is caught red-handed in front of the door, his feet clad only in socks, his hair rumpled, and his gloves missing. He draws himself up imperiously, painfully aware that Logan is taller than he is.
"As you can see, there is no need to worry," Deceit says briskly. "I am feeling much better. Oodles better, in fact." Logan regards him, skeptical.
"I have a hard time believing you," he says. "And this is only the last link in what I sense is a much longer pattern. Roman is the one who did this last time, but I believe I am 'up for the task,' as it were."
"What task?" Deceit asks, alarmed, just as Logan scoops him up, bridal style, in his arms.
"I apologize for not asking permission," Logan says, as he carries Deceit out of his room. "Is this all right?"
"I-" Deceit pauses. He feels strangely...content in Logan's arms. He tries not to dwell on it too much. He isn't sure what he's talking about regarding Roman, but perhaps Logan thinks this is what one does with invalids. And he can't deny that he prefers it up here, instead of braving the cold floor.
The others are sprawled out in the living room when Logan enters, the television on low. Remus is draped across the top of the sofa, mercifully in his pajama bottoms.
"Dee Dee!" He exclaims, drawing the others' attention. "Ooh," Remus says, his eyes widening. "Dream come true, is it, Dee Dee?"
"Of course not," he hisses, cursing the flush spreading across his human side. Now they would ask questions, they would mock, they would-
"Sit here, Dee?" Virgil asks, patting the sofa cushion next to him. Deceit blinks in surprise. "Is he okay, Lo?"
"According to him, he is," Logan says, with a slight frown as he sets Deceit on the sofa. Deceit has to bite back a whine of discontent at the lack of contact. "I find it difficult to believe. It has only been a few hours."
"Rest does me a world of good," Deceit says, straight-faced.
"We wanted to talk to you about something, anyway," Virgil says. Deceit's eyes widen as Virgil goes on, hasty. "Not a bad thing, you aren't in trouble. It's just, well."
"Go on," Patton encourages.
"You're kinda acting the way I used to, so I just wondered if um, maybe you wanna be with us?" Virgil asks, all in a rush. Deceit's mouth sags open in shock.
"It's all right if you don't," Patton assures him. "But even if you don't, I hope you know that we enjoy you being around! You don't have to hide out in your room or miss meals, Deceit. I promise." He smiles, and it's tinged with sadness.
"Does that mean..." Deceit trails off, unable to articulate it. Roman grins.
"That we like you, dearest Fibber on the Roof? It does indeed," he says, with a broad flourish. "If you'll have us, that is."
"Yes," Deceit says, not even thinking about it. "Yes, I- I would."
He suddenly finds himself with a lapful of grinning Remus, driving the breath from his lungs.
"I knew it," Remus says smugly. Deceit rolls his eyes.
"You are impossible," he says.
"So are we," Virgil says cheerfully. "You get used to it."
Deceit smiles.

I had an idea for once
DLAMP
And Logan is down a rabbit hole about something or other and realizes it's illegal to marry more than one person
Which he knew already, but like, it never sunk in that that applied to him. (And of course he's just a facet of Thomas so it's not really like he could get married anyway)
But it still makes him sad.
So Roman is like NO I WILL NOT ALLOW MY NERDY BOYFRIEND TO BE SAD
I DON'T CARE ABOUT LAWS
I'M JUST GONNA THROW A WEDDING FOR US ALL
AND IT'LL BE THE MOST EXTRA ASS WEDDING EVER
And Logan is like no Roman you don't have to do that, don't worry about it, it's fine, just leave it
And Roman, being Extra™ is like HELL NO WE'RE DOING THIS
And just because he can, he makes everyone both a custom suit and a dress, and they can pick which one they wear
(could also apply to other poly ships)

Here’s something I’ve been working on for the past few days!  The lineart was done by the fabulous and ever-amazing @fanartfunart I had a lot of fun doing this.  I think my favorite part was deciding on the colors.  For the outfits, I heavily referenced the images, but for the rest, it was kinda a free for all (As you can see in Dee’s shoes.  IDK it seemed like him).  I do wish I had made Vee’s and Pat’s skin tones more different though.
Image with references below the cut!

Another drabble I wrote for my superhero AU, though this one turned out a lot longer than I expected.
masterlist for my superhero AU
Relationships: platonic/romantic DLAMP
CW: chronic pain, flare ups, some internalized ableism, mentions of Janus’s mom’s less than stellar parenting.
A/N: While this chapter vaguely draws on my experiences with my back and knees, I don’t have arthritis. I tried to do as much research as possible and hope I have managed to portray it correctly. If my depiction is in any way offensive or incorrect, please don’t hesitate to inform me and I will correct my mistakes or even delete this writing. Hope you enjoy <3
Janus woke up with that familiar hurt curled around his bones. He sighed wearily as he looked out the large stained glass windows. Rain was beating against the panes with a violent intensity.
Some days he wondered why he stayed here, wouldn’t it be better to just move to a nice sunny country where the sky didn’t seem to want to drown them? Who was he kidding, this city would never let him go, rain and his aching bones be damned.
He rolled over in bed a few times, hoping stubbornly the pain would allow him to sleep a little longer. It was way too early to even think about getting up, in his opinion. After a few more minutes of his body complaining and aching, he wearily dragged himself out of bed.
He fumbled around for his cane and slowly made his way to the kitchen. He popped a heat pad into the microwave and switched on the kettle. Fortunately, it was still filled with water, meaning he didn’t have to struggle with taps right now. Picking up the heating pad had been hard enough with his hands feeling like they had been run over by a steamroller.
Why did it have to be today of all days? It wasn’t like he’d had that many plans but he had been meaning to at least get some work done.
There was no way he’d be able to do much of anything today, merely the thought of typing made him cringe, let alone the thought of actually going outside.
When his heat pad was warm, he curled up on the couch in the most comfortable position he could find and resigned himself to a day spent watching mindless television.
Somewhere around ten, a call came in and Janus fumbled to answer it with his stiff and aching fingers.
“Damore,” He introduced curtly. If it was another bullshit telemarketer he was going to strangle someone. Once his body was halfway functioning again, of course.
“Hello Janus,” Logan’s voice filtered through the phone speakers, in the background he heard Roman yell something. “Yes, I’ll ask, now could you please be quiet,” Logan said, presumably to Roman.
Janus felt his lips quirk up into a smile despite himself.
“We were wondering if you would like to accompany us to Carntos forest, we were planning a hike.” The smile slipped off Janus's face. Of all days to have a flare up.
“As much as I would love to, I’m afraid I can’t come. Maybe some other day.” He tried not to sound too bitter.
“Oh,” Logan sounded disappointed “why not?”
Janus hesitated. Usually, he would just grasp at the nearest convenient lie, he could easily tell them he was busy with work. But, he’d been learning not to do that, to let them in, not to bury himself in lies and mystery.
“I’m not feeling too well today,” He eventually said, he didn’t feel like explaining his condition right now. His mother’s words still echoed in his head.
They wouldn’t think him weak, would they? They were good people. But after a lifetime of being told that he was faking it and to suck it up, he wasn’t exactly keen to share it with other people. He was supposed to be strong, a terrifying villain, not someone who could barely get out of bed some days.
He was shook out of his self deprecating thoughts by Logan. “Are you alright? Do we need to come over?” He asked, his voice filled with concern.
Janus felt emotion well up in his throat, not a lot of people held so much concern for him. He shook his head. Really? He was getting all teary eyed over some polite sympathy?
“No, I’m fine. I hope you enjoy your hike.” He pressed the end call button before Logan could say something else that would make him bawl like a baby.
He was just dozing off uncomfortably, when a knock on his door startled him.
Who was even…?
He got up painfully and limped to the door, leaning heavily on his cane. He grabbed the gun from its hiding place before opening the door. It never hurt to be cautious. When he opened it, he was greeted by four smiling faces.
“Hi,” Patton greeted cheerfully, “We brought soup.” He held up a large container.
In that eloquent way of his, Janus just stuttered out “What?”
Roman gently grabbed his shoulders and steered him back inside, putting the gun down on the table. The others followed, Virgil laden with a variety of food and Logan carrying some dvd’s. Patton made his way into the kitchen and started clattering around in the cabinets.
“We’re here to take care of you,” Roman explained as he sat Janus down on the couch. Then he abruptly drew back “It’s not contagious is it?”
“No, it’s not,” Janus said, distracted by Patton and Virgil doing god knows what in the kitchen and Logan heading towards his bedroom. They had all invaded his space with a swift efficiency.
“Great, so what’s wrong?” Roman asked, sitting down on the couch opposite him.
“It’s…” Janus’s mind was not cooperating right now. He tried to think of something.
“Dude, I’m literally a nurse, you can tell me.”
“I’d rather not.” Janus said, sounding a lot more defensive than he had meant. He was just slightly stressed out by these people barging into his house and Roman pestering him. He really wanted a nap and for today to be over.
Roman looked him over critically. “Fine, you don’t have to tell me, but we’re not leaving till you feel better.”
“Prepare to stay a while then,” Janus couldn’t help himself from laughing bitterly.
Roman’s eyebrows scrunched up adorably and then he smiled. “Well, that’s good, ‘cause Patton brought lots of food, so we can hang around for as long as needed.”
Janus curled his shoulders protectively. “You don’t have to.”
“But we want to.” Logan had appeared from the bedroom with an armful of blankets and was looking at Janus with such gentle and loving eyes and Janus had absolutely no idea how to deal with any of this. Why were they here? Why would they ditch their plans just to take care of him? Why did they even care?
Virgil and Patton came in too, carrying a tray laden with fresh buns, fruit, a bowl of soup and some tea. Janus’s stomach grumbled noisily. He’d only really eaten some crackers, as he didn’t have the energy to prepare anything more fancy than that.
“I don't know what you want to eat right now, so I’d thought I’d go with the classics for someone who’s sick but I have other stuff too, if you want.” Patton fretted.
“No, this is fine.” Janus replied.
He made to eat the soup then stopped abruptly. There was no way he could manage that, his hands were aching all the way from the tips of his fingers to his elbows and they were so stiff he could barely curl them around the spoon, let alone coordinate them enough to eat.
He suddenly felt very vulnerable, with all of them staring at him. He cleared his throat.
“I’m actually not really in the mood for soup.” He apologized and reached for the bread. That, at least he could eat without too much trouble.
“That’s fine, we just need to make sure you eat something. You’ll never get better if you starve yourself,” Patton replied cheerfully.
Janus cringed internally. They didn’t know, he couldn’t blame them for it, but god, did those words hurt. Always that same question: are you better yet?
“So, which movie do you want to watch?” Roman burst out, eager to get started on that.
“Maybe you should first ask him if he even wants to watch a movie, you idiot.” Virgil hissed.
“All right, no need to rain on the black parade, sunshine,” Roman defended.
Logan rolled his eyes.
“I’d love to watch a movie,” Janus said before the two could start a full blown argument.
The others settled into the couch and Janus barely suppressed a whimper when Logan jostled his legs. Wow, he was really pathetic today.
Despite his best efforts, Logan noticed his discomfort and looked at him, his eyebrows knitted in concern.
“Did I hurt you?”
“No,” Janus immediately deflected, then when Logan’s eyebrows did not change their stance “It’s just… my knees hurt, so please be careful.”
“Oh, did you hurt them during patrol?” Patton asked.
“Patrol?”
“You fell off a roof?”
Oh, yeah, that had happened. His cheeks heated up in shame as Virgil tried to stifle a laugh. Jumping over rooftops was not his forte. The fall itself had probably looked a lot worse than it actually was, he had only vaguely scraped his elbows.
“Yeah, I remember. No it’s not that.”
“Really? It looked like a pretty bad fall, it would make sense that your knees hurt after something like that.”
Patton didn’t seem like he would let it go anytime soon. He was clearly worried about Janus. He sighed, it was going to come to light some day, better to bite the bullet now than to wait for when he would be forced to reveal it. He took a deep breath, oddly nervous. He shouldn’t be this worried, they cared for him, they were his friends, they had come all the way here to take care of him.
“I’m actually just having a bad flare up today.”
A beat of silence followed his statement and Janus tried not to panic. But Roman just nodded understandingly.
“You mind if I ask what…?”
“Rheumatoid arthritis, symptoms started when I was about seventeen.”
“You could have just told us, honey,” Patton exclaimed.
“I don’t always feel comfortable sharing it”
“Well, I’m happy you felt comfortable sharing it with us,” Virgil said.
“Yes, I’m happy you trust us with this knowledge, Janus.”
What was this annoying fuzzy feeling in his stomach? It was probably the tea, or maybe the buns, who knew what Patton put in those.
“Do you need anything?” Roman asked.
“Well, some more heat pads would be nice.”
“I'll get it.” Virgil got up.
“Does it jostle you too much when we sit on the couch?” Logan asked.
Janus hesitated, he was already bothering them so much, it really wasn’t polite to kick them off the couch too.
“Jan, sweety, please be honest with us, we don’t want to hurt you,” Patton pleaded.
“Yeah, it does.”
All of them happily moved to the floor, laying down some pillows and blankets so it was still comfortable. Virgil returned and passed him the heat pads.
“So, how long do these flare ups usually last?” Roman asked.
“Usually most of the day, sometimes longer.”
“Well, as Roman promised, we’re staying here as long as it lasts.”
“Yay! Slumber party,” Patton exclaimed.
“As long as you don’t throw any pillows at me,” Logan sighed, before promptly getting hit in the face by a pillow from Virgil. He looked at him with a look of utter betrayal.
Eventually, everyone got settled and they turned the movie back on. Janus tried his best to focus on the plot but soon found himself drifting off.
