Meet Charlie Edwards, an English writing major from Little Lake, Michigan, and one of NMU’s student brand ambassadors! Check out some of Charlie’s thoughts on his Wildcat experience so far:
What do you like about your major at NMU?
Charlie: The class sizes are generally small and typically there are around 20 to 25 people in English classes. This gives each student an opportunity to get one-on-one time with the faculty. What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
Charlie: My internship at the literary magazine Passages North was probably the coolest thing I’ve done at NMU that pertains to my major. All of the other interns were great to work and collaborate with and obviously, the staff was just so awesome, helpful and encouraging. What are you involved with on campus?
Charlie: I have checked out a lot of student organizations during my time as a student, but the one that I definitely stuck with consistently since freshman year was the NMU Hip Hop Dance Crew. I am now a fourth-year member of the team and have connected with so many other dancers on campus, forged a lot of friendships and made too many awesome memories to count.
What's your favorite memory during your time as a student?
Charlie: Waking up at the crack of dawn to participate in the world’s largest game of freeze tag in the Superior Dome during Al Roker’s five-day Rokerthon!.

5 Amazing things 2/5
The power T at Neyland stadium.
The power T at Neyland stadium was a successful attempt to break the world record for world’s largest human letter. It was part of Rokerthon, an annual event in which weatherman Al Roker tries to break as many world records as he can. The gates opened at 5 am, so my friends and I met at 4:45 to walk down to the stadium. After a short check in process, we were left to our own devices for the next hour and a half as the stadium slowly filled up. As I had never been to a game, it was my first time in Neyland stadium and I was awestruck. We were sitting in the lower rows, close to the field, and it didn’t feel as big as it did from the outside. From the outside, I’m never looking at it head on and thus see more of the stadium from far away. When I get up close, the brick is much more prominent that the steel, and as such, I only feel the brick rather that experiencing the entire building all at once. As we came to the stadium pre dawn, it was an experience to see the sky gradually brighten, before the sun rose and broke through the steel that makes up the upper tiers of the stadium.

This morning I woke up 4 a.m. to participate in the Rokerthon. Thinking about waking up this early the last couple days I thought it would be horrible, but once I got up and moving I was ready to go. We got up, got ready, and headed for the Superior Dome at 4:20. Standing in line for like 45 minutes was probably the worst part about the Rokerthon. Once we were registered, we got free snacks and coffee, which was much needed. When we finally all got on the turf, we did a practice game and then sat there for way to long. It was a mystery to me why we had to be there so early, when we were not actually playing and breaking the world record until 8:08. Once the game got started things were hectic, but once I realized if you stood in the front, by the stage, you were most likely to get on the Today Show.  I was told by one of my friends that she saw me, but I am yet to see. Waking up before 11 isn’t something I usually enjoy doing, but I think it was well worth it this morning, and I think it was a great experience.
