My love-hate relationship with Real Grades Model Kits

I realized something the other day: every single one of the 3 RG model kits have screwed me over in some way.

The Strike Freedom? Extremely fragile with parts popping off at random times. Wings keep falling off. Had a close encounter with the floor.

My RG Gundam Unicorn? Torn arm socket, so I had to glue it in place. The incredible amount of separate plates nearly made me rage.

The Wing Gundam EW? Upper arm ripped in two and had to glue twice. I also accidentally cut of some nubs that didn't need cutting. Oops.

I love the RG kits because they look so detailed, they're fun to build AND (most importantly) You get a good quality Gundam for a reasonable price.

I hate them because there is ALWAYS something that goes wrong with 'em.

Will I keep buying them?

I might have a slight problem

So since my last backlog update I’ve added: Durga I, Sol Raptor, AUV Amaterasu Regalia, Noir, Ilshana, MGEX Strike Freedom

Also I needed to put the Virtue box sideways so you can properly see just how massive that kit is (well not really like size massive but weight massive).

Since then I’ve built: MG Kyrios, HG Calibarn, HG Schwarzette, HG Guntank, 30MS option part set 6, 30MS Luluce (mid progress while I figure out how to make the noir jacket work).

Be warned and stay safe kids. Plastic crack is real.

Update on RG Gundam Unicorn.

It's chest looks so tiny compared to the legs, it's funny.

Finally took some nice pictures of my RG Hi-Nu Gundam :)

This kit is special to me because it's the last gunpla I finished before my kiddo was born. I actually wrapped it up over a year ago but I haven't had the time/energy/drive to take DSLR pictures of it til now.

The paintjob is based on an old Moon Gundam commission I did back in 2020 and the Unicorn Gundam. The pink/red accents are meant to invoke the Unicorn's psychoframe :) I used grey in place of blue on this because I wanted to use the polygonal decals that the RG line uses but since some of those decals are white I had to make my color choices based on that.

Overall very happy with this little guy. The kit itself is wonderful and this paintjob is really striking, if'n you ask me. I have the HMBL for this too and that parts are all prepped, they just need to be painted. Dunno when I'll get around to that but it'll probably be before the year is out.

High grade Kshatriya and also my entire shrine to Unicorn. Tried to sorta recreate their first fight. I've got HG, RG, and PG unicorn all in destroy mode. I need to get one in unicorn mode too.

1/144 RG Unicorn Gundam complete!!

RG. Unicorn. Gundam.

I haven’t even put on the stickers yet, but this is already one of the best things I’ve ever built. First of all.

Unicorn Mode:

I haven’t watched Gundam Unicorn yet, only G-Witch so far, but I love how this guy looks so basic. If you put him without decals next to some 30 min missions kits, he’d fit right in. But the articulation is still so clean, and the bazooka gun sword combo is such a fitting arsenal. and then, oh man, Destroy Mode:

Unrivaled main character aura. If you compare the feet from Unicorn to Destroy, they deadass made him taller by giving him high heels and making him pink, and the best part is that it works. Once all the stuff is locked in, it basically seems like he’s meant to be in this mode, with Unicorn base being just a small distraction in comparison. While the articulation on the head is stunted a bit, the sheer presence this thing has next to some high grades is astounding. It’s taller than Barbatos Lupus!

Rating: 9.5 out of 10, -0.5 for arm twist and me accidentally breaking a part (skill issue, whoops).

Gunpla #11 - RG God Gundam & HG G Gundam

I've included the HG as an example in the difference in articulation between these two kits, but this is mostly a post about the RG.

RG God Gundam is one of the newer RG kits and it's an absolute delight. The colours are great, the proportions are great, the articulation is fantastic. This is also my first time using waterslide decals and I'd definitely say the purchase and extra effort is worth it.

Only downside is that the hinges on the.... back thingies... wings... whatever - are a little fragile. Though that might be because I applied panel liner to them directly before I was informed that I shouldn't do that (topcoat -> panel line -> decal -> topcoat).

A fun little extra gimmick in this kit is the shoulders being double-jointed - an extra bit of articulation to make it's iconic arms crossed pose more natural:

If you only ever build one Real-Grade, you could do a hell of a lot worse than God Gundam.

oh, and if you've noticed that the beam sabers is missing - I'm planning on using them in a kitbash, but that'll be a while from now.

G Gundam will be my next stop when I've finished the UC trek to Unicorn. I've heard there's a horse involved.
