The wonderful Mancunian actress Wunmi Mosaku can be seen grappling with a leather-skinned monster in the horror film His House and drinking a body-swapping potion before having sex with a wizard in the HBO/Sky series Lovecraft Country. Pure hokum, right? After all, this is a woman who made her name with gritty performances on British television in Moses Jones and Luther, and who won a Bafta for playing Gloria Taylor, mother of the murdered Damilola, in Damilola, Our Loved Boy. Has moving to Los Angeles played havoc with her sense of reality?
Actually, no. His House and Lovecraft Country belong to a new generation of accomplished, provocative stories that invite us to compare the terror and violence of genre fantasy with that of the real world. They include the Emmy-winning Watchmen miniseries, which used Alan Moore’s superhero saga as a jumping-off point to explore bigotry and civil rights, and such racially charged horror movies as Us and the Oscar-winning Get Out, both directed by Jordan Peele, who is an executive producer on Lovecraft Country.
“The horror of humanity is the real horror, the things that we put people through,” says Mosaku, 34, via Zoom from Atlanta in the US. It’s hard to disagree. The most disturbing thing about His House isn’t the haunted council home assigned to her character, Rial, and her husband, Bol (Sope Dirisu), on their arrival in the UK from South Sudan. It’s what the couple endured before they got there: massacres, institutional brutality and losing their child as they cross the Mediterranean in a rubber dinghy.
Jurnee Smollett alongside Mosaku in the HBO/Sky series Lovecraft Country ALAMY
Meanwhile, the fang-filled, head-chomping bogeymen in the Fifties-set Lovecraft Country are puppy dogs compared with the racist cops, lynch-hungry rednecks and white men burning crosses on the lawn of their black Chicago neighbours.
The fantastical elements of His House have their roots in Rial and Bol’s grief, guilt and trauma. Yet Mosaku thinks that the heightened experience of watching horror, with its jump scares, musical cues and manipulative editing, is “a great vehicle” for conveying those more earthbound emotions. “It helps with empathy,” she says. “The tension, the way one’s heart beats when watching something that’s terrifying.”
In this tricksy new dramatic world we’re often not sure if the monsters are real. The events of His House, Mosaku says, “feel like they could absolutely be in their heads”. In Lovecraft Country three characters wake up the day after a horrific battle with the aforementioned fanged beasts but two of them can no longer remember it. This is a kind of gaslighting, echoing the way that black people’s testimony of mistreatment has been challenged.
Mosaku’s hardest scenes in Lovecraft Country came when her character, Ruby, drinks a potion that temporarily turns her into a white woman. This allows her to experience privilege — suddenly, strangers are deferential and policemen believe what she says. Things take a more lurid turn when she drinks the potion before having sex with a white man (actually a white woman in magical disguise — it’s complicated). At an, erm, crucial juncture, the potion wears off and her pale skin cracks and peels away.
Idris Elba with Mosaku in Luther, one of the British TV shows in which the actress made her name BBC/ALAMY
It’s an upsetting sequence, aesthetically and symbolically. “It brings up lots of crazy thoughts and rage and pain,” Mosaku says. “But I think the reality is that if any of us changed the skin that we lived in, whether it was to be someone who was disabled or Asian or LGBTQ+, the world changes how it reacts to us.
“People are threatened because of my skin [which] is weaponised against me,” Mosaku says. “My stature and the fact that I don’t conform to Western ideas of beauty with my afro and my west African gap [teeth]. I have to overcompensate, to say, ‘That isn’t me. Just because I’m 5ft 9in and black doesn’t mean that I’m threatening.’ I am a happy, joyful person. But I am not allowed to express any kind of frustration or anger, because I get boxed straight back into that thing that they always thought I was.”
Born in Nigeria, she moved with her family to Manchester when she was a year old. Her parents had been professors, but struggled to find similar work in the UK. In the end her mother started her own business and her father returned to Nigeria after the couple split up. Mosaku loved music as a girl, singing for 11 years with the Manchester Girls Choir, and she shows off her gorgeous voice in Lovecraft Country, belting out Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby in a party scene.
She doesn’t speak Yoruba, her parents’ native tongue. “It’s a real shame,” she says, telling a story from her primary school years to explain why. She is dyslexic, but at that point it was undiagnosed. “My teachers saw I was struggling with reading and writing and told my parents that they needed to stop speaking Yoruba in the house, which is crazy, because they would never have done that to a French family.” For His House she learnt Dinka, the dominant language of South Sudan, as well as being tutored in the culture of the region and hearing testimonials from refugees who had made the journey through the Sahara to north Africa and across the Mediterranean.
She was set on studying maths after school until she decided at the 11th hour that she preferred acting. Hearing that another Mancunian, Albert Finney, had gone to Rada, she applied and got in. Soon after graduating she was being directed by Rupert Goold in Rough Crossings at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London, and appearing in David Hare’s The Vertical Hour at the Royal Court. “Theatre is my jam,” she says. Every time she and her American husband come to the UK, “We will see a play as soon as we land. We’ll go to the Young Vic with our suitcases straight from the flight.”
After several years of yo-yoing between America and the UK, Lovecraft Country is the first time she has worked in the US for an extended period. It’s not certain whether the show will return for a second season, despite critical plaudits and ratings that compare favourably with other HBO series such as Watchmen and Succession. Either way, Mosaku seems happily ensconced in Los Angeles, where she lives with her husband, who she would rather not name.
There are strong rumours of a role in Loki, the superhero spin-off series in which Tom Hiddleston returns as the trickster god from the Marvel films, alongside Owen Wilson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Mosaku says, with an evenness that sounds practised. Given that she’s speaking from Atlanta and that’s where they’re filming the show, it would seem a good bet.
Eventually Mosaku says she would like to move behind the camera. “Even some of my favourite films, it might be a black story, but it’s written by a white person and directed by a white person,” she says. That’s the next barrier for people of colour, and it’s starting to come down, thanks to Peele; Misha Green, the creator of Lovecraft Country; Remi Weekes, the director of His House, and the like.
Mosaku talks about the notion of double consciousness, as explored in Toni Morrison’s novels: “The way that the world will box me up before I’ve even had a chance to prove who I am. It’s exhausting. Trying to do things without having to explain or apologise is really refreshing. That’s what I love about Lovecraft and I think His House does it too. We don’t need to explain. Let’s just be.” His House is in cinemas now and on Netflix from October 30. Lovecraft Country is on Sky Atlantic, Now TV, Amazon and Google

1 - Nicholas Hamilton
Y, honestamente, no importa.
2 - Slade Pearce

3 - Amybeth McNulty
“Anne With An E“.

5 y 6 - Connor Jessup y Miles Heizer
https://www.instagram.com/p/B8m4GG7lMjV/?utm_source=ig_embed
7 - Jaden Smith
https://www.gaytimes.co.uk/culture/jaden-smith-confirms-tyler-the-creator-is-his-boyfriend/
8 - Bella Thorne
https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/culture/story/bella-thorne-pansexual-opens-overcoming-abuse-bullying-64472878
9 - Buddy Handleson

Also really likes choose your own adventure games like Detroit: Become Human, Life is Strange, and Telltale Games
So much video game merch! Usually figurines because he likes to make little shelves and display cases for them.
He also really likes multiplayer games because he’s a social butterfly and likes to play with his squad.
Sucks at first person shooter games but still willingly plays Fortnight or Call of Duty or Left for Dead with his friends because he doesn’t want to be a drag and complain. But also they sometimes die in game in the most hilarious ways and it just leaves everybody wheezing.
Virgil Dante
Horror games, obvs!
All about that dark aesthetic!
Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, Fran Bow, Sally Face, Resident Evil, The Witch’s House, Amnesia, Little Nightmares, Bendy and The Ink Machine, Alice: Madness Returns, SCP-Containment, Pony Island, etc.
Yes, he’s played all the Five Nights At Freddy’s games. It’s a good series and it isn’t his fault the fandom is bat shit crazy and full of ten year olds! Fuck you Roman!
Every time the Walking Dead comes out he knows he’ll end up crying by the end of it. He and the squad make and event out of it.
Japanese horror games are usually his favorite because they deal more with the psychological aspects of horror instead of the jump scares
So, yes, he’s also a fan of Corps Party and Fatal Frame
Also really good at first person shooters because he has a really steady hand (you usually have to when playing horror games least you want to restart the level) and it pisses Roman off to no end every time Virgil randomly headshots him.
Usually likes to by merch in the form of posters, t-shirts, or beanies. He only buys figurines if it’s a game he really, really likes.
At first didn’t know why people kept bugging him to play Doki Doki Literature Club but then he finally caved and...oh...that’s why.
Logan Mill
My boy loves puzzle and strategy games yo!
Legend of Zelda, Portal, Tetris, Unravel, World of Goo, Inside, Limbo, Pokemon, Shadow of the Colossus, StarCraft, Command and Conquer, Age of Empire, Heart of Iron, World of Warcraft, etc.
He likes Overwatch but doesn’t like playing with people online so he usual solos or asks the others to play. But that too usually ends in chaos.
Hates rage games because he gets frustrated easily and has broken at least four keyboards and two controllers
He still plays them anyways because he can beat it damn it! Just give him a minute!
Enjoys the God of War series despite all the mythological inaccuracies
He plays a lot of Minecraft to relax or destress and has build beautiful works of architecture and sometimes entire cities.
He thought it was stupid and childish and was embarrassed about it for a long time until the squad came over to his house one day uninvited and caught him playing. He was getting ready for them to make fun of him but they instead gushed about how AMAZING everything looked and how TALENTED he was for building all himself.
Logan ends up showing them how to play afterwards and they work together to make weird sculptures and complex tunnels underground.
He likes practical merch like backpacks, coffee mugs, pencil holders, notebooks, ect. as well as a few t-shirts and novelty ties.
Yes, he does collect Pokemon cards!
Patton Adley
Silly dating sims, farming games, and any cute game really! Plus a few side scroller games!
Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Slime Rancher, The Sims, Dream Daddy, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Monster Prom, Hatoful Boyfriend, Scribblenauts, Night In The Woods, Ni Nu Kuni, etc.
Big Nintendo fan!
He made the mistake of playing Doki Doki Literature Club without reading the warning tags and regrets it immensely...still a good game though.
He did the same thing with Huni Pop but that one made him laugh more then anything and he kind of got addicted to it. Then he found out there was a sequel called HuniCam so he went down that rabbit hole too.
He likes a lot of phone app games too like Cut the Rope, Neko Atsume, and Candy Crush.
Loves trashy dating app games, he thinks they’re so funny and cheesy
He was addicted to Mystic Messenger for a long while
Just because he has his preference doesn’t mean he won’t try other games too, Logan got him hooked on World of Warcraft (though really he did that to everyone), Virgil showed him Hollow Knight, and Roman suggested he play Undertales.
Prefers merch in the form of plushies and key chains!
He likes to bake and decorate cookies, cakes and pastries in the form of his favorite video game characters.
RED SQUAD
Duncan [Deceit] Adley (Patton’s twin)
A lot of first person shooter and combat games!
Doom Series, Super Smash Bros, Mortal Combat, Halo, Fortnight, Grand Theft Auto, Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Destiny, Wolfenstein, Bio Shock, Splatoon, PUBg etc.
Patton was the one that introduced him to Splatoon and he won’t admit that it’s actually super fun.
Doesn’t mind story driven games and RPGs but he really just wants something he can zone out to and relax
He likes to troll people online, mainly assholes picking on little kids who just want to play.
He once teamed up with a group of kids on Call of Duty solely for the purpose of collectively kicking the asses of this groups of so called “real gamers” that were being jerks.
Has memorized all the combos! He doesn’t have time to sit and look up a cool finishing move, he needs it now!
Always mains the weakest/most useless character in fighting games and still manages to kick everyone’s ass.
Doesn’t have a preference in merch and usually grabs whatever he likes be it figurines, t-shirts, posters, plushies, or whatever, so long as he likes the game it comes from.
Has several tattoos from his favorite games
Emile Picani
Classic retro games, cartoonish games, and Nintendo are his jam broham!
Mario, Classic Sonic, Paper Boy, Transylvania, Spyro, Pac Man, All the Saga Disney games, Duck Hunt, Mario Kart, Galaga, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Secret of Mana, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, etc.
Absolutely fell in love with Shovel Knight when it came out!
Remy got him into all the indie pixel games: Towerfall, Terraria, Owlboy, Hotline Miami, Papers Please, Celeste, One Shot, etc.
Duncan was the one that introduced him to Cuphead and the usually play it together and see how far each of them can go without dying.
The game is difficult but the art is still so breathtaking!
Likes the occasional psychological thriller game
Bet Virgil showed him Alice: Madness Returns and Doki Doki Literature Club (after he’s played it of course)
Likes plushies and figurine merch with the occasional poster and coffee mug.
Likes to doodle a lot of his fav video game characters and cartoons and is actually really good at it. He helped design most of Duncan’s tattoos.
Remy Knightly
Likes a lot of indie games and old online flash games!
The Stanley Parables, Oxenfree, Inside, Firewatch, Super MeatBoy, The Binding of Issac, Donut County, Henry Stickman series, Impossible Quiz, Crush the Castle series, Hyper Light Drifter, etc.
He always gets everybody hooked on one game or another
He convinced everyone to play Undertales so for like a month they all went through a HUGE Undertales faze.
Was the actual, ACTUAL one that showed Duncan Cuphead because he knew the dork would be reminded of Emile because of the animation and would want to show it to him and play multiplayer (*cough* subtle matchmaker *cough*)
(Do not be fooled, he is a pinning boy himself)
Is up to date in all the gossip of the latest games and consuls, indie or mainstream! He’s in the know, know and if you need to know something chances are Remy probably knows it.
Weeds out through all the indie horror games for Virgil and recommends what he thinks are the best ones.
Same thing with Logan and his puzzle games, he’s usually is able to find very strange ones and Logan seems to likes those best.
Obviously has a lot of merch in coffee mug and thermal form as well as a few key chains.
Occasionally streams on Twitch with Duncan and Emile (sometimes inviting the main squad too), they’re commentary is usual hilarious.

So, it looks like the roaring success of a wedding party added to Brandi’s reputation. You sure you don’t wanna roundhouse kick your BFF Dina there for smooching your firstborn son?
(John Burb – lover of drama, sitter of fences, gossip extraordinaire and never met a dirty joke he doesn’t like – glides by without a word but a mental note to regale his wife with all the sordid details.)
I still don’t know which of the two of them initiated that, but I guess this is what happens when you combine cute blond Fortune sims, one of whom has recently reached an... eligible age?... and our old friend ACR.
youtube
Darren had at least five of those six beers, so this doesn’t surprise me in the least. Dreamer, I’m cutting you off!
Time to celebrate the transition of the terrible twins, the perfect ending to this... interesting wedding.
Growing up next to a rain puddle, is it everything you ever dreamed of Skip Jr?
Sadly, it’s also time to say goodbye to the Mortimer Goth cosplay and the buzzcut...
... and hello to... this! I’m pretty sure given he’s Sloppy and Playful, SJ’ll be a Nature sim, so it’s not even like this is hobby-appropriate costuming (it’d be better for his sister, she’s bound to be Sports or Fitness with her personality points).
There’s something so ritualistic about the way they stand around cheering somebody aging, I love it. It’s even better in weddingwear.
I’m also a big fan of how different Skip Jr looks to his older brothers. And this genetic correctness! I’m not sure how we ever put up with the gender-reversed Brandi clone EAxis stuck in the vanilla game. THANK YOU @meetmetotheriver 💟
I’m excited that he grew up well, but scared of what kind of child he’ll be. Nowhere near as terrified as I am re: Suse though.
Darren finally told one dirty joke too many? And in front of A CHILD?! No wonder he and John Burb get along so well.
Beau: Hey I’m gonna be a teenager in like a day, I can take it.
We’ll be the judge of that.
Oh god, I don’t know if I even really want to do this, but here we go.
Yo Bran, when did you change into your afterparty gear? (Seriously, I had no idea she had that maternity formalwear lurking in her wardrobe.)
Susie: *stares at fire* Yes, yes, consume the souls of my nemeses...
Skip Jr: Uh, Mr Dad, I think you’re supposed to put her down.
Beau: This is gold.
Skip Jr: Seriously DreamerDaddy, I really think she’s meant to be on the floor...?
Skip Jr: I can’t watch.
(Legitimately though, at this point I was hiding from the screen and peeping through my fingers to take these screenshots. I love a good glitch, but this was beyond terrifying.)
OH MY GOD.
THEY’VE MERGED INTO SOME KIND OF MONSTER.
Oh thank heavens. I just had Darren do the ‘put Susie here’ action and while her arms did get stuck like this for a while, everything went back to normal and she was a child and not some warped giant baby. Good bloody lord! Darren, had you forgotten how to transition a toddler? Dirk’s not that old!
Hey Suse, you’d better not be hunting bugs just to set fire to them.
Susie: Well I won’t be setting fire to anything if my stupid jar stays this empty.
While I’m kind of loving Susie’s blazer and jeans, gotta get those twins into the colors they were in as tots. It’s my rule! (When feasible.)
Yeah we get it guys, you love each other because you’re both pretty awful. Had enough of this yet Beau?
Beau: Urgh. I’m disappearing into a place where I can control everything, thank you very much. This here dollhouse.
That sounds like a strangely familiar concept.
Ah, back to some semblance of a (relatively) normal life! Skip Jr’s already making good use of those Playful Grouchy traits by beating Beau to death with a pillow, and Susie’s slyly charming her way into an older brother’s affections just as she did with Dustin.
This loading screen will look rather different... imminently. Room for two more?
Oh yeah! Remember Dustin’s strange schoolfriend who marched brazenly into the Broke trailer and randomly picked up and snuggled the twins when they were but babes? Skip Jr clearly does, and now that he can articulate this experience, is telling Beau just how traumatic it was.
Back to plate-making, you! Yes I know you want a vacay, and you’ll get one when you sell several more of these. Also what’s that ‘get caught cheating’ fear? Why is cheating even crossing your mind? You literally just got married and it upped your chem with Daz by one whole bolt – three is the magic number, don’t mess with perfection!
With Susie being an active-grouchy sports lover, I got her a nice Goal of Paul to play with. Of course the first thing she does is stand in it and jeer her brother.
Skip Jr: Listen sis, this is your game not mine.
I’m fine with whatever happens as long as that ball doesn’t hit poor Darleen’s gravestone.
Susie: So what we got going here.
Beau: Well we have this whole saga, see. Shirley here has been struggling with her feelings towards Muriel for quite some time now –
Susie: So she sets fire to Muriel’s hair in a passionate fury and then these two ladies over here come and chop her good with samurai swords to avenge Muriel?
Beau: Uh, no –
Susie: ‘I curse the day Shirley was born!’ ‘As do I, we will demand blood for blood!’
Beau: *sighs* Not really what I was going for. How exactly are we related again?
Susie: This is great! Do you have any of those little green army men? Let’s have them explode the house in an act of WAR.
Oh hi! Tinkering Lady is COOL! Dirk finally bagged the elusive invite to go play with cars and trains and robots. I think he’s our first too.
I am going to aggressively marry her into one of the families at some point, I have to. Boho style, badass purple streak in her hair and pink eyes too? She has it all!
Brandi, that is not acceptable. You have a pottery badge for crying out loud.
Oh okay, you’re going into labor. I suppose that’s a fair excuse.
Even cool Tinkering Lady is running to see the miracle of life!
Darren: Oh, you’re having the babies, love? That’s nice.
THE MOTHERFUDGING VERTICAL RING GLITCH IS BACK AGAIN ON HIS SECOND FRIGGING MARRIAGE
Susie?
Susie: Astarte and Proserpine are busy avenging Muriel and fending off acts of terror, god, leave me alone.
Dirk looks like he’s singing a power ballad and I’m loving it. Meanwhile Beau is like, this ain’t my first rodeo.
Here we go... again. AGAIN.
The cramming into the doorway while Brandi gives birth in the narrowest place in the whole house is a treat tbh.
And here they are! We gots two gals. Not saying they’re not lovely, call me a picky sim breeder but I was expecting them to be... at least S3? The genetics in this game confuse me sometimes.
Speaking of genetics, look at this brown-eyed babe! Take your pick, they could be from Brandi’s dad or either or Darren’s parents. I’ve named them after surrealist artists (because I figured their parents’d be into that), so we have little Frida here...
... and mere seconds younger, her sister Remedios!
As per usual everybody cheers the firstborn twin and poor Remy doesn’t get a look-in. Even Susie dragged herself away from her macabre soap opera to say hi.
Susie: Who run the world? GIRLS! Who run the world?
Skip Jr: Bang bang!
Beau: No. I only have three Playful points. I refuse to engage in your nonsense.
And here are the twin ladies in their matching rubberbabybuggybumpers. Next up, we have our dearest Beau hitting teenhood! I’m gonna miss him as a kid.

Reaping the harvest of slavery.
The respected writer Maya Angelou says of Reap the Forgotten Harvest: "If we are to rid ourselves of the blight of racism and see where we are going, we need to see where we have all come from, and how we became who and what we are. This book will help us." Juliet Highet reports on this profound book, which although only published in Britain, has not been reviewed in the British media. "The mainstream press has completely ignored it, but I am not surprised at their reluctance," says its Nigeria-born author Remi Kapo. Find out why. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] THE SUBTITLE OF Reap the Forgotten Harvest, reads: "An Epic Saga of Slavery", and "epic" it certainly is. The book opens a window on to an era when a minority of white and black men with no conscience went mad from greed and selfishness. It helps us understand why the madness of yesterday hasn't left us. It is still with us--and indeed slavery in one form or another continues all over the world. The book is the first part of a trilogy following the interaction of two families linked by slavery over 350 years. One family is Nigerian, the other English. When Africans were forcibly removed to the Caribbean, where full bodily contact was made between black and white, in all senses, a third family was created. That infamous trade formed the Caribbean. The saga is at times horrifying, as expected, but also profoundly moving, illuminating, uplifting, and also--perhaps surprisingly--entertaining. This is partly because it is a nail-biting, page-turning novel in rollicking style, rather than a sonorous non-fiction work. Maya Angelou has endorsed it, saying that it "can be read for entertainment for it is entertainment. It can also be read for its timeliness. If we are to rid ourselves of the blight of racism and see where we are going, we need to see where we have all come from, and how we became who and what we are. This book will help us."
Author Remi Kapo agrees: "Yes, novels are supposed to entertain, but historical ones should teach you at the same time. I wrote the book because I couldn't find any story that had the black and white of Britain playing roles with human dimensions all the way through; neither could I find much folklore between us. So it's time to start creating some. In America they've got Gone with the Wind, which is full of human dimensions and relationships between black and white, even though these were far starker than depicted. Slavery was a very brutal part of history, which Martha Mitchell softened. In my book the brutality is short and sharp and moves on--I don't linger on gratuitous violence. Had I written a book about the cruelty that really existed, you wouldn't be able to read past page 2 or 3, because it would be so horrendous." Instead, Kapo presents the human roles, the conversations, the courage, sacrifice, compassion, redemption, humour and happiness too. Kapo cited the fact that there is lots of folklore in Africa, the Caribbean and in Britain. "But when you bring that triangle together, there's no folklore between us. In my book there are actual relationships between black and white which include respect, affection and love as well as hypocrisies, stupidities, and of course the violence." [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] In Reap the Forgotten Harvest, Faith, the daughter of a plantation-owner, forcibly initiates a sexual relationship with a Nigerian slave, Kayode, which alters over time. Understanding and empathy grow between them. "A new enquiry was emanating from her eyes into his being and humanity, rather than at the blackness of him. It was as if she really wanted to understand him and his life on the coast of Guinea." He too begins to understand where she was coming from, what she had to let go in order to cross over to his side. Eventually, even though pregnant with his baby, she helps him and his lover, also from Nigeria, to escape, with selfless emotional sacrifice. On the eve of his escape, Kayode, unaware that she is pregnant, meets her. "She had violated him at that first furtive encounter in the summer-house. Despite that violation and the iniquitous dominion of slavery, they had grown progressively closer. Consequently, he had over time, risen above his hate to forgive her abuse of him. He acknowledged the time she had then spent bridging the vast divide between her life of privilege and the barbaric reality of his existence. He had no doubt that she loved him to the extent that an affinity and equality had arisen in their curious relationship. Now while she was bidding farewell to her lover, he felt he was saying goodbye to a remarkable friend." Immediately after the birth of their baby, Faith's father sells him into slavery.
Another catalyst for Kapo's book was his conviction that relationships between black and black have been inadequately explored, how a relationship between a black man and a black woman can be as enriching as any other. Kayode and Asabi met in Guinea through his rescuing her. They were abducted from the village of Ake to the (imaginary) island of Pertigua, and their bond never breaks until he dies. "I think it's important that all our school children know that positive relationships have always existed between black people. "Now it's come to the point where our children say: 'I've heard about the slave trade, but what was it all about?' We still need to research this part of history; but we also need to extract palatable aspects and turn them into stories." In later books of his trilogy, Kapo covers the issues surrounding colonisation, the two World Wars, decolonisation and the contact between Caribbean and Africans meeting in London, "I don't want to hold back on anything," he said. "I've tried to give a balanced picture." Remi Kapo has had a colourfully varied career, starting adult life in the merchant navy, lending insider information to his description of the Middle Passage. Then he moved into the arts and journalism, as co-director of the People's Gallery, as a TV documentary researcher, as a writer for The New Statesman and New Society, and director of the Roundhouse Arts Centre. He is the author of a bestselling, nonfiction book titled A Savage Culture about racial politics in Britain. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Kapo arrived from Nigeria to live in Britain at the age of seven, and has a fascinating take on the position of a writer "getting under the skin" of someone of a different race, a process he feels was vital for his first novel, Reap the Forgotten Harvest. "I had to write as a black man, and a white one, a black woman and a white one." It took him months of agonising "to set aside my black consciousness and perceptions to write the role of the white liberal Thomas Wimborne. When I was writing the slave-owner's role [Faith Bradshaw's father], I felt like a traitor, because I would be wounding my own people. When I first started dispensing beatings, I found it really difficult. I had successfully climbed into the skin of the slave-owner's white skin and behaved like he would. It was easier to deal with Wimborne, who has compassion and empathy for the slaves, yet feels powerless; since I could more easily access the liberal instincts in myself. It helped me understand one of the dilemmas of liberalism. You can see wrong and you want to put it tight, but only as long as it doesn't put you out too much. How far are you prepared to go? Wimborne was a ship's officer under the command of the captain, and at sea the captain is God." Reap The Forgotten Harvest has been published in Britain, with plans under way for publication in Africa and the USA. A film or TV series is also under discussion. But the British press has not reviewed the book. "The mainstream press has completely ignored it," said Kapo. "But I'm not surprised at their reluctance. When Roots and Lawrence Hill's book about slavery The Book of Negroes was published here, the media made a big fuss about them, because they were about American slavery, not intimately connected with Britain. Maybe my book is a bitter pill to swallow, even though as Maya Angelou commented: 'It can be viewed as entertainment.' Even so, as a gentle pill, it's still hard to take. "I thought Britain would be ready for it, because we have become so open to multiculturalism. The lack of reception by reviewers has told me that there are bigger issues in this country than even I thought, of Britain enslaving people, the black masses. Although it finished a long time ago, then why is it still too uncomfortable?" Sales internationally, and curiously in Britain too, are growing, despite the lack of media attention. Kapo receives letters from all over Africa, the southern US states, Eastern Europe, Russia and China. In Britain he has also been giving readings and attending
debates at various universities and literary festivals. "Maybe this is the British way of handling things," he sighed, "sotto voce. Perhaps race and racism are more sensitive here than even the middle class would like to admit." It could also be poor PR from his publisher in a media-driven society. However books like Kapo's, written by either black or white authors, are part of the process whereby slavery can no longer be ignored. "It ended 200 years ago, but never ended in our mentality," he said. "When slavery was happening, a stereotype of the black was created--as the subhuman African, who was seen as having no intellect ... [while] the white man ... saw himself as superior. Then along came the 19th-century social scientists like Darwin talking about black intellectual inequality, [which was] reinforced time and again. When all that was over by the Sixties, the white masses were unaware and uninformed that black people were not subhuman, related to apes, stupid or whatever. So the battle was over--we're all supposed to be equal, but nothing was done about the demonisation that originally existed between both races, and the images that were created, to this day." Kapo insists that in order to put the heritage of slavery to bed, it has to be brought out into the public arena, to be discussed in schools and universities, so that the general public comes to terms with it. Another reason Kapo wrote his book was to correct a commonly held misapprehension that Africans went like mules into slavery. "It sounds as if they never fought back, and the reason why they were enslaved so long is because of that pacifism. But from the research I did, it was clear that in order to survive, they fought back every single day--it was very bloody. This is why the Caribbean people are so strong today and why the slave trade went on so long, for 400 years. The plantation-owners had to get so many more slaves from Africa because the cane-fields were bleeding slaves every day. They were dying like flies. Continuously they fought back. What has mugged so many people is the myth that Africans went like iambs. You're joking! "That's probably the most libellous thing of all." REAP THE FORGOTTEN HARVEST: AN EPIC SAGA OF SLAVERY by Remi Kapo is published by Quartet Books

Life is Messy
It’s time to put the broken pieces together, and actually complete this journal entry. It’s Wednesday, November 1. I have wet-looking, large eyes, (okay, not as large at the Snapchat filter) but I feel like that’s how I see myself when I visualize myself these days, using that big-eyed, big-mouthed filter, with a voice changer.
My youngest daughter and son are playing “school” together in our ultra-clean living room, ehhh, ultra-clean-ish, since they got home, I guess I do see a few candy wrappers on the floor, from yesterday evening or maybe breakfast this morning. I knocked on Remi’s door, and could hear her chewing in her room, apparently partaking of candy for breakfast. Let me end this blog on a positive note though and talk about yesterday, later.
Those wet-eyes I’m referring to are from the many tears and all of the sobbing I just finished up with, on the way home from my daughter’s Ballet Class. I thought I was doing better. I was feeling pretty good, but clearly, my feelings caught up to me. The busyness and distractions can’t distract forever. Why was I crying?
Well while in Danville, Jude ran back to the dance studio, from Joann Fabrics, and I walked, I wasn’t going to run across the mall, keeping him in eyeshot. Opened the door, plopped ourselves down on two small, wooden children’s chairs to wait the 1-2 minutes left of class. We time it quite perfectly, because a six year-old (wild) boy + waiting doesn’t really mesh. Honestly, I’m surprised he will even spend time in Joann Fabrics with me.
I heard through the door of one of the rooms a familiar song but I couldn’t place it. Don’t you just hate that? When you know a song but you can’t figure out what song it is? This happens all of the time! Oh, music, you’ve had such an impression on me, all of my life.
So, Remi emerges from the room, after the other girls, with a huge smile on her face, and a little pep in her step, because she loves ballet. She loves it. As she and Jude talk and she giggles with another little ballerina and we make our way out to the car, and I return any messages before driving (unlike on the way over to Danville, when I didn’t even realize how far I’d gotten until I crossed the border, but we don’t need to talk about that - #distracted). After I checked and double-checked their seatbelts, and we were rollin’ out; I asked Remi about her dance class. Then out of curiousity, I asked if if that music I’d heard was coming from her studio or the other studio. She said, it was her room, and she could sing it for me: “It’s just a symphony…” in the most beautiful, little, eight year-old voice, and I started singing along with her, and then I added, “Glorious!”
Confused, she asked me how I know the words and that song. As I searched for it on my iPhone and we began listening to the very version she was dancing to, per her confirmation, by One Voice Children’s Choir. She then added, “Mom! Your eyes are wet. Are you crying?”
Sure enough, it didn’t stop. It was probably the ugly-face look, tear-streaming, uncontrollably from both eyes at one time, that rarely happens. I wasn’t bellowing but it wasn’t just a tear or two. I smiled through it and tried to stop myself, but I couldn’t. My own emotions, questions, thoughts, grief and series of recent experiences seemed to just hit me all at once. Remi interrupted my thoughts and my failed attempt to sing along, “Mom, stop crying. Are you going to cry like this when I dance?”
“I probably will, Remi, I’m sorry. This song is beautiful. I’m so excited to see you dance to this.”
Journal Entry: 10/29
The longest week of our life is coming to a finale.
Let me begin with last week was Fall Break, an extra-longer-than-normal Fall Break. My husband and I were pretty busy working and doing those crazy mundane tasks of daily living, plus community service. Being totally distracted from our family and we weren’t going anywhere, so, we decided that Friday, the 20th, to take the kiddos shopping in Champaign and enjoy a “fun day” out and about. Upon arrival at the mall, we rode the cool little animals around the mall for 15 minutes and shopped a little bit, and ate a delicious late-lunch at Red Robin.
Gosh, even to type what last Friday looked like seriously causes my heart to hurt. I had to get up and take a walk around my kitchen, get on my iPhone, and return to regroup.
When we returned home last Friday, I received my passport in the mail. This was a big, big deal. I was stoked out of my mind for it, that I created the Snapchat “Passport” Saga, which has now caught on and is a thing. When I say thing, I use that term loosely, because it’s only a “thing” to a few sixth grade girls. I used the amazing jumbo-mouth filter I spoke about during my last blog, you know, with the voice changer. That passport is going places. Even Reis’s friends have snagged it up and used it for their own stories, “with Amanda’s Passport.” I will share.
It’s all fun and games with you’re using Snapchat, you and your dozen twelve year-old friends, until someone pulls up to your house for your daughter and you’re alone, selfie-snapchatting yourself about to take a run “with your passport”.
In this moment, I nonchalantly, dropped my iPhone arm to my side, as if nothing were happening here, and hopped up, and tossed my passport into the upper kitchen cabinet. Then, answered my door. The irony of answering that door was a very ‘deja vu’ experience I’d had about three and a half years ago, in a way. A mother of a good friend of my daughter’s and her son came in and said they’d tried to call her and needed to speak with Reis about Jesse, her boyfriend, but wanted to filter it through me first.
After they expressed he’d been accidentally shot, I felt the fear and chills down my spine, an instant, intense nausea, and when they asked if they could speak with her personally, I asked them to filter it through my husband first because my mind was absolutely blown. He was still out back on the swing, Jude was in the boat, and I couldn’t help but sob and I asked him to come and listen to what they had to say. Then we brought the girls together, Reis and her best friend, Karma. Since we really didn’t know what would happen, we were hoping for recovery, even possible loss of an eye, and praying for a return to normal activity. This kid was extremely active, with a very promising future. The kids were even planning on going to visit him early next week.
Of course, they were nervous, crying on and off, and wanted to know how long he’d be hospitalized. With my education in Nursing and the unknown specifics, I think my intuition was saying, “Be positive, but prepare for the worst-case scenario”. I told the girls he was in the best possible care and I didn’t know any specifics as to what would happen. Relatively soon after this, it felt almost instantaneously, and after hearing a myriad of rumors and stories, we received nightmare news, that he didn’t make it. We called all of the parents together, first, before putting this onto the kids. After they all made it there, we sat the five children down in our living room, surrounded by their parents.
Breaking this awful news to the children, opened floodgates of tears and hugging and screaming and yelling, and every emotion all at once. It was misunderstood. It was tragedy. Grief. Hysteria. These children are eleven and twelve. These kids that were here ran around together constantly with this boy. They spent time at school together, time after school until dark together, weekends together, Facetiming, Snapchatting, Instagramming, Selfie-sending, the whole sha-bang of social media communications, usually by showing their faces or whatever kind of mischief they were into, one to another. They visited the Java on a regular basis, wreaking havoc, updating their “stories”, getting kicked out of CVS, going to the Dollar Store, Casey’s, and the park. The community saw these kiddos everywhere. The girls would watch Football games on Saturdays and Soccer Games, just so Reis could see this boy.
Grief is an overwelming force that demands to be felt. If you remember, I took a Faith Community Nursing class earlier this year, when things were as slow as they were going to be and the Grief Module was a toughy. In order to help anyone else with this kind of experience we needed to know how we personally felt about grief and loss, and then recollect our earliest experience with death or any significant losses.
Grief is a bomb dropped. Yesterday there was a house, with walls, a roof, and the smells of life steaming up the windows. Today, only rubble of a disaster. Shards of broken confidence and the dust of dreams litter a cracked foundation. (Stephanie Erickson, Author of Companion Through the Darkness) I’ve also heard of the wave-analogy. They keep coming but eventually, instead of all at once barely breathing in between, they lessen and sometimes occur unexpectedly. In the moment, eventually and time can’t even be considered. It’s now. It’s in the moment.
The morning after, I came downstairs and wrote this:
Journal Entry 10/21
I’ve been up for hours and it’s 6 AM. I woke up startled, holding my own breath, and then reality sunk in. Reality that seemed like a nightmare. It’s the kind of heartache you can feel in your bones. My eyes welled up with tears, and I made my way downstairs to check on more than a half a dozen eleven- and twelve-year old girls. Laying everywhere, on the floors and in the beds, sleeping, soundly -- their youthful faces puffy from the hundreds of tears they’d cried over the past hours. I put my sleeve up to my face to muffle my own audible sobbing. I just, so badly, wanted to pick my daughter up off the the floor, and hold her, and cry with her. I wanted to take that inevitable pain away, she would feel as soon as her eyes opened and reality hit her like a ton of bricks. That pain that’s staying for awhile and will never truly heal completely.
That numb, paralyzing feeling I had, has now shifted into another stage of grief cycle. Grieving is so very dimensional and demands to be felt and I know, according to the textbook, that’s okay and eventually things would get easier and happier moments would come, but when you’re in it - it’s the perfect storm. It needs to be expressed. It takes me back, three and a half years ago, when I was wondering how my daughter, Reis, eight years old, would take the devastation learning her father had died, by choice, unexpectedly.
Later at age 10, I witnessed the grief shift for her with the loss of a beloved pet, Amidee, which was a part of the family, this seemed to be incredibly traumatic but I later found out it was because of unresolved grief previously, and now, at age 12, her boyfriend - not to mention one of her very best friends (for several years) - and “first big crush” was gone, too, completely unexpectedly, tragically. Three very different, yet horrific experiences shared in our home, in the very same place with her, in our living room, surely digging up deeper wounds or really catalyzing the grieving process.
I felt her pain deeply, for my first ‘love’ had been her daddy, around her very same age. It feels so real when you’re in it and I was crazy about that boy, as I know, and anyone who knows these kids knows, Reis is about Jesse.
The grief for this eleven year-old boy, who stood just two days before, in our kitchen, with his big, beautiful, brown eyes, his unmatched wit, and his vibrant personality -- was hitting hard, in a way that cannot be described in words. This boy who’d been a wonderful friend to my daughter for years, and been a positive, encouraging role in her life, during this beginning transition into middle school, had been taken from this life, before the story was finished. Such permanence.
On the brink of complete and utter devastation, and all that encompasses that, here I am, replaying those “what if” and “why” questions, not fathoming the pain his mother is going through (thinking of my own sweet son) or this boy’s father, or his dear brother, and sister and all of their family, grieving their great loss and grieving for each other. My thoughts traced over everyone who called this little boy a “son” because he was truly a best friend to several boys and a few moms saw him very often, anyone who loved this guy - these thoughts, on repeat, through my mind, and searching for words of comfort, before putting on my own armor for the day, to be present, a shoulder for my sweet baby girl to cry on, a game face for dozens of friends and families. This group of friends, so close and always together, have just had their lives altered forever. This boy was one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable, and he’s left an impression on all of hearts and minds, leaving us changed, forever.
On Sunday, Jesse and Kolton came inside, and waited on the girls to put on sweatshirts and go out into the drizzly elements. I didn’t feel great that day, but I did snap a picture of the girls leaving and the boys were on the steps, barely visible. That day was the same day the kids had been stalking Jesse’s photos on social media, and snapchatting him photos of them, with the line from the song, Mad World. “All around me are familiar faces..” This is probably normal thing for little girls in middle school, in 2017. Then they all left but came back through later when we were working on the flag for the boat, my husband constructed in 90 minutes.
On Wednesday of that week, he’d been inside the house, because the girls said it was “too cold” to be outside, at 55 degrees. Reis had slumped her shoulders down and was dragging her feet around the kitchen declaring her hunger, it was 12:01 p.m.. As I leaned against the bar, on my phone, without looking up, I selfishly said, “Get yourself some food, there’s plenty here, find something.”
Reis then sent my husband a message asking him to get them food and there was a whole orchestra of messages between the three of us. Reis expressed she hadn’t been feeling well and the only real meal she’d had, the evening before, was a salad from the Beef House. (Real first world problems, here.) It was true, she missed school that Monday, because she had been under the weather, but I insisted she go Tuesday if she wanted to see her friends on Tuesday evening or throughout Fall Break.
Since she wasn’t against gluten-free nuggets and fries from the freezer bin, I whipped out the jumbo package of ground beef and made cheeseburgers, g/f mac-n-cheese, green beans, and potato wedges.
The squad: Reis, Karma, Kennady, Ella, all sat around the dining room table, and Jesse stood next to Reis, saying he was good, each time I offered, stating he had a large breakfast. The girls pigged out, per the norm, and my husband came in and sat in the empty seat at the dining room table, asking everyone to listen up. This was about to get good. My husband and I are huge fans of ‘Resilience’, and he had a way about conveying a good message to these youngsters.
In a calm, very rational manner, he asked the girls what the word, “Entitlement” meant. Jesse cut into the conversation, “I’m not very smart, you’re gonna have to tell me.” Allen, gently corrected him, “You’re smart. It’s okay if you don’t know, I want to explain it.”
He then read from the definition (which later I was told by Reis that the girls thought Allen didn’t know the definition and that was why he was reading it), and discussed what it was to have ‘privileges’.
*Crickets*,yet, again, but by this point, Reis sprang up and cleared her plate and began working on the dishes. Our eyes met twice and she gave me ‘the look’ of utter humiliation and embarrassment.
Jesse, always outspoken, commented how he really didn’t have privileges, the girls agreed they didn’t either, but Allen, again, gently corrected them all by explaining the cell phone was a privilege, not a right, as was the time the kids were able to hang out together, the sports and activities, they most likely don’t fund themselves, and the list goes on.
All-in-all the conversation was for Reis’s benefit, and I’m positive she’ll never forget it. I know I won’t. I whispered to her, her friends know her dad and her friends are not upset or offended, they are just fine and dandy. Clearly, they were laughing and conversing with him even after the “talk” was over. After he left, and I was drying the dishes, I witnessed Reis snapchatting Jesse from across the room while Ella, Kennady, and Karma lounged on the floor and couch, and Jude, too, Jude occasionally showing Jesse his game because he honestly has always thought when Jesse, Josh, or Kolton come over, it’s to play with him.
Later, I said something about my passport, and Jesse asked me where I was going, and I said, “To Mexico!” in an over-exaggerated voice, Reis didn’t miss a beat, because she said, “Your home country”, back to him. I then raised an eyebrow at them both, and he said, “Yeah, did you know I’m from Mexico?”
“Jesse, I know your who your parents are, you’re not from Mexico.” He then told me, “Yeah, I know. But they say I am because I’m tan.”
Later, I went into Reis’s room, and tiptoed over the bags and clothing that had been “straightened up”, when motion caught my eye outside of her bedroom window. I peered outside to see Jesse, wearing a Sombrero along with his buddies, too, with Kolton, the Copas Boys, Davy, possibly a Kindell boy, too, and my son, in the custom “Despacito” a boat, my husband had constructed. The girls were standing all around, too, and I said, “Allen, come here and look at this sight. Grab my phone. I need to take a photo.” I didn’t get my phone and never took a photo but it’s imprinted in my mind, forever.
The boat evolved from a fishing pole. My son begged me to make a fishing pole with him, so I did. We both used sticks and tied a small ribbon to the end. Funny thing is, we fished up some leaves because the ends of the ribbons were fuzzy enough to pick them up. We pretended we were fishing from our dock (aka picnic table) and the tailgate of my husband’s truck, and Jude would do the commentary of our excursion. I feels like a lifetime ago, since this happened, since so very much has happened, seriously.
Life has a way about teaching you about priorities. Doesn’t it?
The candlelight vigil was something I’d never experienced and a spiritual feeling I’d never felt before, ever. It was beautiful. A moment I remember while shuffling around trying to make sure everything was good to go, was watching my daughter walk, briskly toward the restroom. I could see her wiping her eyes more than once on her way there, so I followed her. When I walked up to the doorway, I witnessed her sobbing, embraced by a group of her friends, all crying together. It was beautiful and painful all at once. She saw me and gave me the nod (aka the head shake) that I wasn’t needed here, so I turned around and walked away.
I can’t express how much it hurts or how helpless a mother feels when she can’t take the pain away. She can’t make it better. She can’t fix this. I’m learning. A good friend visited me during lunch, while I was in the office, yesterday. He had heard something that made him think of Reis and of me.
He told me about the Metamorphosis of a Butterfly. As we all know, the butterfly doesn’t begin as a butterfly, but rather a caterpillar. Then before the big change, it forms a chrysalis and eventually emerges, completely changed as a butterfly.
A scientist was observing this process, and he noticed the butterfly he was observing was having trouble emerging. So, he simply clipped the top of the sac and almost immediately and simply, the butterfly was able to get out. Yet, even though this seemed to make it easier, the butterfly’s wings did not expand and it never took flight.
Why? Because the butterfly needed that experience, to breakthrough the sac without aide, in order to pump fluid from it’s abdomen through the veins in the wings, which causes the wings to expand to their full size. It’s something the butterfly must go through to fly.
Initially, this story hurt my heart. I think it’s pretty normal for us, as parents, to want our children to live very uneventful, normal lives, with little suffering, grief, and anxiety. We don’t want our child bullied. We don’t want them to feel lonely or depressed. Naturally, we don’t want them to hurt or to feel pain. We want to take their pain away, “fix it”. We’d gladly take on their suffering if we could.
Even friends feel this way. I can’t even tell you how many kids, said to me, they wished they could take Jesse’s place, so their friends wouldn’t be hurting so much, because he was such a great person, and so Reis would be okay.
These comments aren’t alarming because they were each saying this only out of love.
They love Jesse, they are going to keep loving Jesse, and they love each other, yet this wasn’t their path or plan. I assured each of them they are meant to be here, right now, for each other, and although we can’t put the ‘why things like this happen’, into words, one day we will look back on this and see what kind of growth came from this experience, how this changed our life, how we could help other people and how we were better friends. Jesse’s charisma and goodness can be emulated in each of our lives, every day. As hard and as cliche as it may sound, he can live on, through us.
Yet with removing trivial pursuits, as my husband says, “You’ll find a new obsession or addiction.” That obsession is Snapchat.
I created a “story” on Halloween Eve (Is that a thing? Maybe I should say on October 30) the Five Step Approach to TP’ing Homes. In fact, I sent it to all of my snappy buddies, then I had to create a collaboration of those five things for “My Story”. It was about as epic as The Passport Saga: Oh The Places Amanda’s Passport Will Go, I mentioned.
As mentioned, the median age of my Snapchat Friends is probably 12, and I’ve recently come to the conclusion that a Twelve Year-Old Girl is most likely my Spirit Animal. Clearly, because that’s what I went as for Halloween. That or “Mama Vandallama” my criminal alias.
So, I washed my hair extensions, finally. They’d survived Tyreischella with Boho Braids, and feathers still affixed, and Haunted Trailz, on Saturday, when I gave it my best acting skills plus the girls clipped my extensions into Whylee’s hair after the Trailz. Those extensions needed recovery.
Ok, and to be real honest, we tried doing what the Trailz Coordinator wanted, during Haunted Trailz. My husband was supposed to appear to be dragging me across the trail and apparently, my acting skills are rusty and maybe we shouldn’t even refer whatever I did as acting or a skill. So, I played “dead”, trail goers would shine the flashlight on my “pretend dead” acting, which allowed my husband to come up from behind, in a creepy mask, and startle them pretty, darn good. This lasted for only a couple of hours, because by that point we had a dozen sixth graders asking to go home to the warmth, and they weren’t going unattended.
Anyway, shampooed extensions, lying out to dry. A friend of mine stopped in with some money from the event over the weekend, and she mentioned another perfect addition to the ‘Four-become-Five Step How to TP Approach’, and I added that in. I let her in on what was going down because at that point I had a pair of black panty hose on my head like a do-rag which may have seemed a little more legit since my “weave” was out on the counter.
On Halloween morning, I clipped in my extensions, to prepare my disguise for the evening. After returning home from work that day, I opened my daughter’s room to half a dozen girls dressed in all black, as instructed. I then put on some war paint, and was ready. I found it pure comedy as more kids showed up to our home, they openly were being dropped off by their parents and carrying 4-6 rolls of toilet paper in their arms. I guess there were no objections or clearly those kids had a stellar alibi-to-come. I’m gonna go with the no objections option.
There were 8, then 9, then 11, then 16 kids in our group. It felt a lot like the meme “I feel young until I hang out with twelve year-olds, then I remember I’m definitely 31.” They didn’t really have a plan, and when they thought they had a plan, they actually knocked on their teacher’s door. They were chased off a majority of the time, which is comical, and by the time we stopped in for some free hot dogs at the Old Gym, they were ready to have an “escape vehicle”. Sadly, my husband’s truck was containing some doors and junk that wouldn’t support 12 kids, too, so we took the “Hot Mess Express” (my Mountaineer). The juvenile delinquents put the seats down (both rows), so it was flat, and they insisted on maneuvering safely in and out of the vehicle by keeping the tailgate lifted the entire time. Remi came, too, so she said on my console, and I always had a co-pilot. We tried a few teacher’s houses and relative’s homes, but inevitably each and every time, the kids would come in a dead sprint back, and without time for a roll-call, I’d yell, “Are we all in?” “YES! GO GO GO!” and I’d almost have to close my eyes and speed off. Nice thing about keeping that tailgate lifted, even while driving down Liberty Street or Third Street was my license plate wasn’t showing. So, unless one of the dozen kids in the back were ID’d, jail was looking like more of an idea rather than a destination for me, that evening. “Accompanying 16 Minors” would have been epic, but I’m glad we safely and reasonably toilet papered and Ding Dong Ditched.
The spin off the DDD was we purchased actual individually wrapped Ding Dongs, and left those at most of the homes, true Ding-Dong Ditchin’.
This morning, when I woke up I felt like I needed about 24 more hours of sleep. I wasn’t sore from running around but the few short sprints I did partake of, I wasn’t prepared for, whatsoever. I may run 4-6 miles most weekdays, but those are leisurely. Laughing, talking, texting, and running, no sprinting, no loss of air or breath, just leisure -- and if you refer to it as jogging, I take offense.
There are times when You might feel aimless And can't see the places Where you belong But you will find that There is a purpose It's been there within you All along And when you're near it You can almost hear it It's like a symphony Just keep listening And pretty soon you'll start To figure out your part Everyone plays a piece And there are melodies In each one of us Oohhh it's glorious And you will know how To let it ring out As you discover Who you are Others around you Will start to wake up To the sounds that are In their hearts It's so amazing What we're all creating It's like a symphony Just keep listening And pretty soon you'll start To figure out your part Everyone plays a piece And there are melodies In each one of us Oohhh it's glorious And as you feel The notes build Higher You will see It's like a symphony Just keep listening And pretty soon you'll start To figure out your part Everyone plays a piece And there are melodies In each one of us Oohhh it's glorious
