Upon hearing the good 911 news, I came to a scientific discovery about The Characters™️ (This took 15 minutes of my life)

I’ve been trying to bookmark the fics that I like more often so I can actually remember where to find things, but I like the idea of talking about them here more too. I’ve been blown away by the talent and creativity in this fandom and I want to shout it from the rooftops!

With that in mind, here are some Spirk fics that I’ve loved lately!

Time After Time by spaceisgay (ChancellorGriffin)

Summary:

Sam Kirk’s younger brother James is posted to the Enterprise on a six-month rotation. Spock, preoccupied with thoughts of his sister, regards this as an unique opportunity to study another pair of adult siblings in their natural habitat.

That is very much not what happens.

My thoughts: guys I feel absolutely insane about this one. It’s just so, so good. It was one of the first Spirk fics I read when I started getting into it a few months ago, and I just reread it last week because I wanted to know if it was as good as I remembered. It very much is!!!

Highlights: sibling feelings, horny mind melds, THE DINNER TABLE SCENE, dungeons and dragons.

Entering Orbit by museaway

SUMMARY:

Jim escapes to Iowa to avoid the media frenzy following the Narada incident, but a late-night miscommunication results in Spock turning up on his front porch.

My thoughts: this was great to read after watching Star Trek (2009) a few weeks ago. I don’t love the Abrams movies but there is some really spectacular fic out there for them that almost makes up for it.

Highlights: Bartender Jim and cooking for each other.

Not in Front of the Klingons by @android-and-ale

Summary: Our beloved Old Married Spirk have been sent off on yet another diplomatic mission. They’re an (in)famous presence in Federation politics, so really, everyone should know what to expect from them. If you bug their rooms you deserve what you see and hear.

Enjoy canon level “diplomacy,” the eternal mediocrity of conference centers, and lighthearted middle aged sex.

My thoughts: this is DELIGHTFUL and I adore it. Old married Spirk has become one of my favorite things to read lately and this nails it.

Highlights: the way they banter and laugh during sex. They’re so comfortable and happy together, it’s lovely.

Summary:

Two hundred crew members died in the attack on the USS Farragut by a sentient cloud creature. Now the ship has to limp home with traumatized survivors and a borrowed crew. Lieutenant James T. Kirk is doing the worst of anyone, but he won't admit why and doesn't want help.

One of the borrowed crew is Lieutenant Commander Spock. He feels a strange magnetism toward the troubled lieutenant, but the chain of command and his duty to the ship must always come first.

My thoughts: I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the idea of the recitation of names. It’s a beautiful way to grieve, and having Kirk and Spock do it together here is such a moving way for them to get to know each other.

Highlights: unplanned roommates, a lot of feelings about therapy/healing, just a lot of FEELINGS.

the yeomen of the garden (and laundry) by @cicaklah

Summary:

“So you and El-Tee Kirk?” Greig said as Spock came to collect his clothing again after yet another incident. “Is something going on there?”

Spock just blinks. “Which Kirk brother are you referring to?”

Greig shrugs. “I didn’t know there was more than one of them.”

Spock nods. “I am not in a relationship with Sam Kirk, if that is what you are asking.”

Greig gives him the finger-phasers. “Oh cool, cool, that's what I thought. Sweet. Tell your buddy to get better okay? His chest must be so raw after everything he’s been through to damage so many tops.”

My thoughts: this whole series has been a blast to read, but this is probably the one that has stuck in my head the most. There’s something about seeing what other people are up to on The Enterprise that hits me in the right way, and I love the laundry guy here.

Highlights: the garden, laundry workers having all the best gossip

K'diwa: A Steamy Novel of Interspecies Romance, by Jim Kirk by branwyn

Summary:

Jim wrote a romance novel just to prove he could. Then someone leaked it on the public Starfleet server, and suddenly his embarrassingly smutty and sentimental Human/Vulcan love story is all over campus. Luckily for Jim, no one knows that he’s the author. Unluckily for Jim, someone forwarded the novel to the staff of the Vulcan embassy. Now, every Vulcan in San Francisco is reassessing the logical merits of taking Human bondmates.

Spock reads a Human/Vulcan romance novel because he can hardly avoid it. Suddenly, he is consumed by the need to locate the author, ascertain their wellbeing, and instruct them in the way of Vulcan mating bonds. Luckily for Spock, it doesn't take long to identify the author as Jim Kirk. Unluckily for Spock, Jim is unconscious and surrounded by interested Vulcans who also read the book.

My thoughts: this was so fun to read! I love Jim writing a romance novel, I love how they set up all his friends at the Academy, and I love Spock falling in love with him through reading his work.

Highlights: all the Vulcan culture stuff was interesting, and I really love Gaila in this one.

i get why people don't like strange new worlds but it hasn't failed in writing the character of uhura---of giving a character so long in star trek an actual Person, of giving uhura a story and a struggle and a narrative agency---so like, it's doing all it needs to do in my opinion. another season means at least one more uhura episode. which means strange new worlds would go on in perpetuity, if the world was just.

Movik-Taar: Future proprietor of a very popular natural hot spring spa & inn on Vulcan. Husband of T’Meni-bu, Sek’s daughter. He’s self-conscious about his hair loss.

Movik is a braggart, a bit of a lia- exaggerator and a gigantic coward and T’Meni-bu knows that yet earnestly thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread. I’d say she’s that ‘If I had a lame boyfriend-’ post but she genuinely doesn’t think he’s lame and would be defensive if you said he was. Sek thinks Movik is odious but tries to take solace in the fact that T’Meni finds him extremely pleasant. T’Meni and Movik were married before either of their pon farrs because T’Meni wanted to and both families saw no reason to delay if that was her wish. Movik wore a toupee to the wedding and was hesitant to take it off in front of her but when he did she just seemed weirdly charmed.  Movik has a Vulcan parental unit (mother, father) who sired him and another father who is Bolian. He has a Bolian younger sister who’s around elementary school aged.  He has a tendency to exaggerate his accomplishments but often quickly backpedals into the truth. He isn’t a malicious person and is actually a bit of a push over. Said he was going into Starfleet most of his life but when he was the age to apply he suddenly said he was going to take over his family’s inn instead.  T’Meni is very bad at doing actual work in the inn but very good at guest relations and trends which makes the inn even more popular. Movik showers her with attention and gifts so she’s perfectly content. Movik thinks she’s an extremely capable, intelligent person (an excellent match!!) and the two are absolutely insufferable together the way close couples are <3

Some canon divergencies from SNW for my portrayal of Spock. I'm putting it under a cut because it could be seen as negativity, although it's not intended to be.

Spock didn't steal Enterprise. April told him to carry out the mission to get La'an.

Although he has some confusing feelings for Chapel, he hasn't acted on them and he doesn't treat her differently, ignore her, or act extremely awkward with her because of them. (If a relationship develops through rping, I'm fine with that, but I don't want to go the route they went in canon.)

The human thing in 2.05 didn't happen (or it happened differently, and we can talk that out for threads). Spock still comes to understand his mother better and he and T'Pring take a break due to difficulties during the dinner, but not because he was human. (I just can't make sense of how he acted as a human in the show, and would have to do it differently if we need that plot point to happen for a thread.)

I'm keeping his hyperfixation on the lute, though.

honestly, though, managing to get spock to yell at you and manhandle or try to manhandle you TWICE within so few episodes is a SKILL and sam should get some respect for being that level of irritating

you typically wait until the last second to believe the truth -- because it would destroy you to believe it, and then find out it was a lie. you are someone who has never wanted to want, but has rarely been able to do anything else. the idea that you might have to break down your walls for the sake of someone else, someone who could easily decide they don't like what is on the other side, is harrowing. why let people get close enough to be rejected? you are enough for yourself. and you will tell yourself that every time you catch yourself staring at their mouth, smirking at their joke, finding a reason to flick their shoulder. until the kiss. that's when the flood of want, want, want bowls over you and you realize that you are torn between two ways of living. Oh, you think. because despite how complicated you have made it, the moment you kiss, somehow, things seem incredibly simple. they won't be once you start thinking again, but for now, for this moment, you live in the quiet peace of revelation. Oh.

I understand why the t'hy'la footnote is the most well known bit of the Motion Picture novelization, I really do, but I simply cannot abide the also unbelievably gay quote of "Theirs had been the touching of two minds which the old poet's of Spock's home planet had proclaimed as superior even to the wild physical love which affected Vulcans every seventh year during pon farr," languishing in relative obscurity

anyway, I think it makes sense for Kirk not knowing. I don’t think it’s actually common for Vulcans to mention Surak by name, and Kirk doesn’t really have any special interest in Vulcans and their culture. Sure, he knows of T’Pau, but that’s most likely because it was such a huge news that someone rejected a seat on the Federation Council, and McCoy knew of her too btw.

Funnily enough, neither of them knew that Spock came from a family so important that someone like T’Pau would officiate at his wedding. (She could be doing it because of T’Pring, but it’s not like anyone thought of that 🙄)

Spock has known no peace since his captain decided to get some fangs of his own

I’m struggling through the next part so I figured I’d post what I have so it doesn’t just sit in my drafts forever and ever, but I promise it WILL be mutual

Spock definitely uses his fangs against Jim quite liberally, which led to the captain getting his own gold capped fangs and immediately going on a quest for revenge.

They’re insatiable now, so much goddamn biting. Like two cats (or dogs?) constantly fighting and biting each other’s scruff to prove how they’re the dominant one in the dynamic.

I don’t think Spock used them on Jim during a spar UNTIL the captain got his own and proved (very readily) that he was not afraid to play dirty and tear right into Spock’s flesh. The following visit to medbay had Bones going between yelling “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING” and equally “I DONT WANNA KNOW”. He doesn’t give them any pain killers or numbing agents as he heals them up.

Jim is not afraid to be public about it (why would he be? Hello? He’s the Captain, he’ll damn well bite the XO whenever he wants to) but Spock keeps his biting relatively private- and I feel that’s his possessiveness shining through, in a way. Keeping the marking/claiming just between Jim and himself, like those moments belong solely to him, only for his eyes.🙂‍↕️

one thing I love about the original series is the way Kirk gazes at Spock with pure love and affection in his eyes, with a soft smile, in front of everyone on the bridge, while spock talks about something relatively boring like this clip for example
