time to address this: if you honest to god GENUINELY hate any of the main cast of sbg (the main 6) for something they can’t control then pls get off my blog don’t follow me don’t like my art don’t read my fics don’t message me

very often see posts about how the one direction fans grew up to be formula one fans, and the more I think of it, the more it makes sense. putting aside the fact that almost all my f1 friends were 1d fans (were ? are lol), it makes sense that a fandom who's fuel was hyperfixating on boys living out their dreams shifted from one form of it to another.

tha being said, it got me thinking - how do the girlies translate to f1 ? and by girlies i mean what your kpop fan would call a "bias". for example, if i was a niall girl - who's my favourite now ?

so here's a silly little non-sensical analysis and comparison that should not be taken seriously at all :

firstly, the zayn malik girlies are definitely lewis hamilton girlies. both zayn and lewis come from humble backgrounds, were subject to vile, inhumane racial discrimination and hate - all while being arguably the most talented in their respective fields (I mean, you've heard zayn's high note in you & I, and seen lewis' 7 world championships). they're hardworking, pet-loving, very fashionable men who stay out of unnecessary spotlight for the most part, and step out once in a while to remind the world they're drop-dead gorgeous. the zayn girls are safe with lewis.

next comes liam payne - and here on you'll have to hear me out with my comparison of every racer and bandmate. liam and george russell are both aggressively british, unapologetically goofy and true to themselves (and i'm talking about liam in 1d not the one on logan paul's podcast). they're both very talented, highly regarded in their boss' eyes (toto wolff and simon cowell - this post is going to be interesting wow) and still somehow not an immediate fan favourite. this comparison also goes wonderfully well with the whole ziam and britcedes parallels.

thirdly, louis tomlinson. easy peasy. max verstappen. both incredibly blunt, dry humour, pr nightmares, do not give two single hecks. people either love them, or hate them - no in between. both incredibly talented individuals (louis wrote majority of 1d's discography, max has 3 world championships under his belt) and yet are discredited ("louis is only famous cuz of his bandmates and the band itself" and "max just had a good car"). the zayn and louis fued also parallels abu dhabi 2021 quite well aye ? (i'm going insane)

harry styles, no debate. charles leclerc - regarded as the pretty boys (the prettiest, their fans would insist i'm sure) and the most popular, the well-liked. both extremely talented without a doubt, but a little bit overrated, and victimised to glorify and support fan narratives. i know i sound like a hater - forgive me, not my intention. i like them both as individuals - their fans on the other hand (and no, not all, i know) are so blind-sided, so insane and cause so much unpleasantness on the internet. almost ironic, how the most amicable ones have the least liked fans lol. that aside though, if you were a harry girl, chances are you went from one fan-favourite to the other. i also just realised - this supports the larry and lestappen narratives - am i genuinely, honestly onto something here ? (i absolutely am not)

lastly, niall horan. now this one i'm sure will divide you all, but here you go anyway. lando norris. both babied immensely by their fans and bandmates/teammates alike - churchboy persona. the moment they shed the insecurity, suddenly bam everyone hates them (niall's mofo t-shirts, lando's frat boy tendencies, and saying things that the internet will not find funny), promising at a young age, yet somehow grew up to be called overrated. their fans are stubbornly loyal to them, defending them through all their rights, and wrongs. it makes sense to me. one smiley boy to another.

this probably makes no sense - but feel free to add your own comparisons, theories, and notes ! there's 5 of them and 20 on the grid, obviosuly disparity for me to go on and on and on about (for example, I see a little zayn girls to carlos girls pipeline, louis to fernando - oldest boy syndrome and all that) so let me know ! let's yap :)

zak brown hater anon here, I gotchu 🫶. This isn’t very controversial (maybe) but I think no matter what we should have an age limit.

People turn to Max and say he was able to do but don’t understand it’s because he’s the only one we could ever turn to- and happens to be successful. No hate to Kimi, honestly, he could be amazing in F1 even if he’s not in F2, but it’s a risk. Max is the exemption because he’s the pinnacle everyone wants.

Max was a risk his first few years in f1 because f1 was his rookie season, and all the drivers took note and steered clear of him because if you were close to him there was a high chance you would crash- because he was still learning. (Nico 2016 nightmares 💔) Yes, he’s considered one of the best, even when he was young and now regarded by multiple wdc’s but they all knew he had to change his driving style because of how dangerous it was. We look at Logan and while he isn’t 17, he was bumped up to F1 way too soon. He crashes, a lot. Logan isn’t a bad driver per se, his f2 season was pretty good but if he were to stay another year in f2 I feel like it would’ve been a whole different story from today.

But the crashes is just one thing why I worry for kids in f1 (yes they’re 17 but hey, they’re still young) is that it’s a lot for mental health. FIA themselves had the age limit because of the backlash on the sport and so there wouldn’t be another Max verstappen. But lo and behold, they have a very talented and upcoming driver and they want to let him in- at 17- same reason why they wanted Max not to drive. I think it’s kinda hypocritical of FIA, but I understand that rules can change over time. But it’s the fact that their exception for younger than 18 yr old drivers is that they must be promising? promising? What a load of crap. Other well established drivers who could’ve debuted at 17 or maybe older but didn’t have enough points (because the points system is bs..) isn’t the same thing? Why weren’t they granted an exemption?

Though, I would like to point out I’m not saying I think max should’ve raced at 17 too. As much as I love his first few seasons and how development, he was not just a risk to other drivers but for himself. He’s a talented driver, but that could’ve gone wrong if he didn’t have the mentality that he had. Few were on his side and rumors were spreading that he would’ve been without a seat until he changed his style. Yes, he won a few gp’s and got podiums, all-in-all a skilled driver that deserved a seat but everyone focused on how aggressive his style is. He finally did change, after years of being in F1. This could never happen now in F1 because they would be kicked out before they could even try. People would react to like how they did with Logan or Nyck. Barely had a chance at F1 yet let’s kick them out and let other talent show. F1 is a tough sport, yes, but it’s also very hypocritical.

so yes, it would be tough for young drivers like Kimi. I don’t know much about his personality but the media is ruthless.

The same thing could happen to Kimi or any other young driver. Sometimes the real pressure isn’t the race itself but the media. A lot of drivers who weren’t even that young already felt this pressure. Albon is a great example. One reason why Red Bull wasn’t cut out for him is that all eyes were on him and always criticized him and it was so bad that he stopped social media for a while.

Kimi is a talented driver, but there is no rush in f1. New young talent is good for the sport but it should also not mean “let’s serve the plate raw” I guess this also shows how bs the super-license is but even then I believe the 18+ rule should stay. Though, the points system should be reworked… and the fact people can get exemption…

Oh my god, I was literally gonna make a post abt this (especially with the new allowance of 17 yr old that the fia has announced), and this is timed so perfectly. Anyway, u are literally never wrong ZB❌️ anon <3

Overall, you've covered literally every point I wanted to talk about, so I'm just gonna add a little bit on to the mental aspect to what uve said, but other than that, this summarises my thoughts PERFECTLY.

I feel like fans also forget how MUCH of a mental strain it puts on a driver to be promoted to f1 THAT young. when max got that torro rosso seat, it was like he was fresh meat and they were all starved predators, ESPECIALLY when they realised he was too young to properly control/ limit his answers to the media. There were SO MANY articles just absolutely CRUSHING him, like it's genuinely insane how bad it was. That kind of thing is not healthy for ANYONE, much less a CHILD. And atleast max was occasionally podiuming and doing really well, like look at logan (the poor boy) this man is getting absolutely VIOLATED by both the media and his team, and it's not even really his fault. It's the team's fault for bringing him up this quick and then leaving him to fend for himself the SECOND he's not doing as well as they wanted and needs emotional support.

The same goes for kimi, I get that he's a talented driver, but ppl need to chill. This boy still isn't properly used to f2 cars, uve made him COMPLETELY skip f3, and now ur talking abt promoting him to f1 next season??? He's sixth in the f2 standings rn, by the way. And I'm sorry, but giving him a seat in MERCEDES next year is both going to be so unfair to him (the media are gonna rip him from limb to limb if he makes even a little mistake) and to the other drivers who are much higher than him in the standings.

Anyway, I love u ZB❌️ anon, and thank u for letting me rant abt this😭 (I was gonna respond to this much quicker, but since I couldn't sleep last night, I thought 'oh might as well go to the park and just chill for a bit, reconnect with nature and all that shit' and then I ended up falling off one of those small hills so bad that I got a hairline fracture😭. Sophie and Kamala is an interesting friendship pair. To be honest, I would like to see Sophie and Laura interact a good bit. Especially after all that stuff with Gabby and the mind fragment and all. What is Marvel's aversion to putting characters together that make sense? What is their aversion to building on and referring to their own canon? This only book one though, so. I'll chill about it.

To be honest again... didn't love Laura's interaction with Kamala really at all. I liked her being protective but they definitely gave her the Logan Special on her personality. Stabbing a phone and being vaguely mysterious and dark was... a little cringe. A little too Logan. Laura knows how to talk to people. Kamala's gotta be just a little older than Gabby. Should've been easier for Laura to level with her. Think of all the times (even recently in Blood Hunt) Laura's had to go help Gabby because she got into something she shouldn't have. Laura's never been condescending to her. I don't think she would actually be that way to Kamala either. Could've been a nice interaction between them. But no. We got weird and cringe instead.

I don't really know anything about Kamala, so I apologize in advance, but, still in regards to the interaction with Laura, I didn't like her there either (I'm being a hater today. Sorry). Maybe I just read it all wrong. But. Laura got the Logan Special and Kamala got the Naive Teen Special. "Being a mutant doesn't mean you don't get to have a life." - huh??? Was that supposed to hit hard or something? They're lacking personalities to me. Like, real personalities.

You could write that dialogue with any two characters and it would basically work.

Again though... this is only book one. I know.

I liked Prodigy being a college professor. Anole was cute but even he felt a little bit off to me. Just like a little bit.

Julian as the Krakoan - not hating it yet. Interesting to see the other Cuckoos with him. Not even gonna try to guess what's going on there. I'm anticipating Laura and Julian to interact on some level. Hoping nothing romantic but usually the opposite of what I guess is what happens, so. I'm already trying to warm myself up to whatever might go down. I just don't want all of Marjorie's deep story-telling to be swept away because someone wants to write about horny college kids. Marvel kinda likes that sometimes.

I'm gonna keep reading it because I want to support Laura being in the books. However, I'm significantly less excited about this now.

I think the next book is really Laura-central. Hoping it gets better.

NYX #1 from 2000s had me sobbing after book one... in a good way. This is such a different vibe.

regarding the episode, i’m so glad we always run to each other to scream!! i did cry more in the previous episode, but there such a deep sadness to this one, especially with shiv 😭 seeing them actually have a somewhat healthy convo about their feelings made me SOB because look how far they came! i feel like roman will be so hard to watch because he will hit rock bottom so quickly because he looks too “okay” and it will be terrible! for ken to be “winning” in ep 4? yeah, he’s about to crash and i’m not ready, im so scared that the water motif becomes even more real for him 😭but the paper was such a genius writing decision, because he will forever wonder if it was underlined or not 😭 and shiv… baby ): even tho i’m not the biggest fan of the pregnancy arc in other show, i think it does make sense for shiv and it’s been hinted so much but it happened at the saddest possible time 😭 the way she says “you can’t go, not now” to logan and it’s even sadder now … i also never realised how much i liked the angst between her and tom but they’re KILLING me this season, there’s just something so deeply sad about their relationship that always gets me 😭 worried but excited to see where she goes because maybe things will turn around for her (this is me manifesting)

Sinister Secret #5 references Scott and Emma sleeping together. Also before one of the Hellfire Galas Emma talks about Scott not staying over because she was so stressed she wanted to sleep alone. She also talks about him not liking that she sleeps in diamond form.

I'm going to put this under a read more so not to make everyone have to scroll through this:

Let me preface this by saying I'm not anti-Scott/Emma (and if you followed my blog, which I don't know if you do nor do you have to, you'd see that as I've posted a lot about them through the years. Shipped them myself and do read the comics so again that's not what my rant was about), but to address your comment in regard to the Sinister Secret #5

It's ambiguous just like everything else has been in the Krakoa era. I personally took it as Scott's sleeping with Logan as well since they were trying to sell the poly ship between Scott/Jean/Logan and the comics were clear to indicate that those three were certainly up to something with one another. Again though, it was open to interpretation and ambiguous at best so there's room to think Emma too was a part of it and in the link I posted below where I had a very in depth conversation with another respectful Scott/Emma fan who offered up some points, you can see that I'll concede to the fact that Hickman seemed to be wanting the four characters to interact with one another in a romantic setting, but as soon as Hickman was gone it felt like it was over and Scott/Jean became the main focus (with a little side of Jean/Logan tossed in around other areas). They shut the poly ship down, which sucks and we'll never get a clear view of what was from it.

That being said the panels you mentioned about Scott staying over are in the post I linked and it doesn't say anything about him wanting to stay over that night. Just talks about Emma thinking about Scott saying she was cold in her diamond form and her reflecting on what he does and doesn't see in her and her inner monologue. To me it could be taken as sure they're together now or it could be from their past time together. It's deliberately ambiguous as was everything in this era and on the flip side as I mentioned in the link below when Scott said out of his lips the following conversation: "It's all that hair. Too hot for covers and it's too cool without them." (see below) thus indicating Scott was sleeping with Logan to know how Logan's body temperature was the internet exploded and haters kept saying that means nothing. That it means absolutely nothing in terms of them sleeping together, so if that means nothing for Scott/Logan then one could argue that the Emma thoughts about Scott saying her diamond form is cold could mean nothing too.

If it does mean something and says that Emma/Scott were still sleeping together, then the same rule applies to Scott/Logan here as Scott seems to be well versed on Logan's body temperature from personal experience. That being said I'm not trying to be anti-Scott/Emma at all and the post I've linked below is better at referencing this, but like seriously all I'm going to say on the matter further is that aside from the panels of Scott/Jean, Logan/Jean and Tony/Emma clearly sleeping together they've left everything up in the air with the characters and we shippers have our own head canons about what is and what should be, but the writers have deliberately left a lot of it ambiguous to give without truly giving. I think Hickman tried to give to everyone but got shot down and now, well, now I don't think the poly ship even exists anymore per editorial, but I do see that Scott is with Jean and Emma is with Tony and no matter how anyone feels about it (and believe me we all have strong opinions about each pairing) for now that's what is being written. I do like Scott/Emma together even though I personally believe after (maybe) Hickman they weren't together on a romantic level anymore and weren't given an opportunity to be of any kind of romantic status.

That said I also like Emma/Tony together as well. Again, highlighted in the link below probably better articulated than this is, but for those who want to skip the long text my complaint was about the Twitter fans who wished Emma death instead of being with anyone other than Scott. That's sick in my opinion and you can't change my mind on that. If you love Scott/Emma then fantastic. They rocked as a couple. I loved them too once and they made an amazing pair for a while before Bendis ruined it. Maybe one day they can do it again, but to those extreme fans who would rather Emma dead than finding any happiness outside of Scott, I think they need to get their priorities in check and grow up. They were who I was speaking out against, not Scott/Emma fans and if that wasn't clear before I'm making it clear now before I stop talking about this subject as I'd rather focus on other things in fandom that I you know actually enjoy right now :)

what are your thoughts regarding the zoey 102 reboot movie? as an avid d*n schnider hater

well first of all, i think at this point we should all be dan schneider haters. i also feel like zoey 101- compared to icarly and if they rebooted victorious- have a lot of elements of being problematic for viewership than just being an original dan schneider production.

but i have lots of miscellaneous thoughts regardless. right off the bat, the trailer is cut together so awkwardly why is zoey in the background when logan is proposing but the whole first half of the trailer is framing her finding out over the phone and being shocked lol

i’m not in love with the plot in general, but i can see where the image came from and what they wanted to do with it. i just think the characters are a little old to be behaving like that? if the story was like five years after the original with the characters in their early twenties, sure, but these are 30 year olds. it’s just odd. also. if i was quinn, i would have been way more pissed that my boyfriend who’s literally rich as hell didn’t propose for like. 12 years or whatever the timeline is here.

i think that in terms of “missing cast”, the only one that actually could serve as notably missing is victoria justice’s lola. as much as this is obviously going to be a story about chase and zoey, it’s quogan’s wedding. the cast missing is much more tea for us as viewers than it is for any of the actual characters.

dana was never friends with quinn or logan, quinn’s character became much larger after dana had already left. at that point, she was literally only friendly with zoey. she wasn’t much friends with nicole either- arguably logan was much closer to nicole than she was, and not nearly close enough to be in the wedding when they hadn’t had contact since like tenth grade. dustin was clearly friendly with them both but because he was zoeys brother- he would have make sense as cameo at best. lola is the only one who would have had enough a relationship to warrant even an invitation tbh.

stacey has a lot of balls to be talking shit about zoey for not being “over her high school boyfriend” when she married hers, and is literally part of a wedding party for her husband’s ex girlfriend of like three entire years of high school who is also marrying a high school boyfriend. lowkey weird she and mark are even in the wedding at all- invited sure, but IN IT?

okay here's the thing. the main character I have the strongest negative feelings about outside of logan is shiv but as I said in my other post that's extremely complicated bc she's also the character I have the strongest urge to defend. she exists in a special liminal space for me for reasons that are deeply personal. so while yeah sometimes I have a really strong negative reaction to her she doesn't really fit in the category of irrational loathing bc it's far more complicated than that

I've also seen the show so many times (on my 21st rewatch rn) that I think I've come around just through exposure to characters I initially bristled at. but. but. when I first finished the show I fucking hated roman. I did. sorry romangirls. my irl bestie is a romangirl so I don't take this lightly. there's just something about him. I can't pin it down I just don't like him. Connor and Greg amuse me, Kendall I simply don't care about, Roman makes me taste blood. I think if I had to guess why I think a lot of it is the flippant way he regards the harm and discomfort he causes the people around him but that isn't exclusive to Roman so I think it's just a personality thing. sorry

Storyline Study: Season 3

The Commander's storyline and actions in S3 are extremely erratic. I'm here to say ArenaNet did this on purpose for the Commander's storyline - which nicely gives lie to the myth that they ignored Trahearne.

The idea? ArenaNet did not ignore Trahearne's death... but all the other NPCs did (or seemed to).

The theory is that the story Anet was trying to tell with the Commander is that they was lonely. The theme of the whole game is unity and working together, and we just had a general all-around fail with that in Maguuma when all the Pact was hostile to sylvari, and so we failed at the Big Message of the game, and that's why we 'lost' (killed Mordremoth, but lost Trahearne). The idea is that this has lasting repercussions, because the Commander was traumatized by Trahearne's death - not just by his death, but by the fact that you were the one to kill him.

And so, you're traumatized, and that continues to have negative impacts on the storyline and the main point of the game for the rest of S3 (and also a significant portion of PoF, but that's a different story).

I think that, all throughout S3, the Commander is feeling lonely. First off, hardly anybody recognizes that Trahearne meant something to you, they're only (at best) concerned about the hole he left in Pact hierarchy. I don't blame General Almorra for this? She lost her warband the same way we lost Trahearne, but she doesn't know we had to kill him. I think, after a year of silence from the Commander, Almorra thought they had handled the grief of Trahearne's death (because she probably WOULD know we were close to him) and didn't want to intrude or anything. She was kind of doing her best, at first, to not explain what was going on internally with the Pact and the Pact's general feelings towards Trahearne, so I think she was trying to respect our feelings because she knows grief. (If at this point, Commander - especially a Vigil Commander - had, say, had a mental breakdown and explained to her what happened, she would be ten times more sympathetic and she might glue us to her side until she was sure we were alright.)

Enough about Almorra. Eir's also dead, Zojja's out of it, Logan decides to become Marshal (betrayal!) and he's also so out of it he's just doing paperwork, Rytlock is called away by Black Citadel superiors, Marjory ignores our pleas to think twice about Lazarus and disappears with him, Caithe got tied down guarding Aurene, Braham yells at us and leaves, Rox goes with Braham so he doesn't do anything too reckless, and it's just all not in control. The Commander literally has a line about this to Taimi: I can't make anyone listen to me, I'm doing bad at being a leader so please listen to me. (I forget if Taimi did or not.) We stare down Anise and help Canach work his way out of his debt to her, and invite him to Dragon's Watch, only for him to say "I've been under someone's yoke for too long" (CLEARLY referencing, not just Anise, but Mordremoth too) and then disappears. Oh, and then Marjory gets deathly wounded and Kasmeer vanishes.

This intense loneliness is all symbolized by the fact that we face down Balthazar, the God of War, and potentially an awake and active Primordus, by our own freaking self in a volcano. Taimi's there for technical support, but she's less of a combat buddy and more of a liability to protect (no offense, Taimi). Commander never faces down bad guys alone. They always has an army (or at least a dedicated group of powerful friends) behind them.

The Commander is so desperate for allies they take a magically binding death-oath to get into the Shining Blade. Exemplar Kerida is snarky and at first Commander doesn't like it, but they warm up soon enough. (Kinda like Canach. "did you singe your eyebrows off?" "eh, they needed a trim." Canach would DIE.) But also the Commander is tested by being promptly confronted with their worst fears and insecurities. But you're willing to do it if it means you'll have companions? And then it's HELPFUL, and all the little things that have been bugging you for the whole Season 3, about Rytlock and Caithe (and she mentions Trahearne) and Braham and Eir and all those things that make you feel like a failure as a leader - you deal with them, you put those demons to bed!

And then, we GO BACK TO ORR.

AND IT IS ALL GREEN AND ALIVE.

AND VERY HEARTBREAKING, THANK YOU. This is also, if memory serves, the same time Anet released the Knight of the Thorn side-story and the statue of Trahearne, and so you're thinking about this already and you're going aahhh this weird statue they don't understand him and also aaahhhhh Ridhais we are twin spirits and then you GO TO ORR.

And there you have a BUNCH of people who understood Trahearne and are working to preserve his legacy and also there is the ghost of King Reza!! And they ask for your help! And you can do your own little part to spread life by killing skelk scavengers or something, and so you help, and this kind of calms you and gives you a sort of communion with the land and the people around you who all understand Trahearne and his goals and his legacy, and this is massively understated in the game but I think it's very healing. You kill some Risen (with Caladbolg!), and so that's a kind of catharsis. You go through the reliquaries of the Six, you discover some things about Orr that Trahearne may or may not have known (I forget if there was maybe dialogue about how the whole place was sort of magically protected from intrusion), and if he did know it then you can know it too and it's a sort of I'm walking in your footsteps Trahearne moment, and if he DIDN'T know it then it's a sort of I won't let Orr die with you, I'll keep it and the memory of it alive and growing for you.

And then you go and punch Lazarus in the face with The Shining Blade and also Exemplar Kerida who is also Livia? And wasn't she a necromancer from GW1 and she stayed alive all this time with the - guess what - Scepter of Orr? (I think?) So we have a snarky, hundreds-of-years-old necromancers with a special Shining Blade (Caladbolg glows, right?) whom Anise defers to and who doesn't mind bossing YOU around like nobody's business. But you fight this Lazarus who was supposed to be dead but he preserved himself inside these aspect things, and Kerida/Livia is about to die and you're panicking like it's going to be Trahearne all over again? But then you DO it, you WIN!

Now, you're still awfully lonely and all your friends are still not around (except Taimi, bless her heart), and you faced the literal last of the mursaat with nothing except you and this snarky menace, but it's a start and and its an improvement and you've got hope again.

So really, the Season 3 storyline is massively about the Commander overcoming grief and guilt and shame regarding Trahearne, and I think Anet did it on purpose. Why did we go to Orr? NO IDEA. Tie-in to Kerida/Livia having the Scepter of Orr, and also for a bit of backstory on Balthazar getting Lyssa's mirror, and of course we do need an update on Orr SOMETIME, yeah, sure sure. Those too. But really I think it was healing for the Commander's poor traumatized brain, but Anet didn't want to say it because of all the haters.

Summary:  Logan and Virgil are science YouTubers; Roman and Patton are dealing with these introverted scientists. Lo and Vee write two songs for their boyfriends.

The Science Love Song

“What are you doing, Vee?” Logan slumped into the seat next to the man.

Virgil glanced at his boyfriend, deciding if he wanted to address the issue immediately or let it sit a little, before letting out a sigh. “I’m taking a small break from working on a possible new video to look through our YouTube comments for future experiments.”

“Hmm…” Logan was trying to be interested, but nothing really mattered compared to what was on his mind. “What is the video idea? Another lab?”

Virgil nervously shifted. “No, it’s a song. People liked the “Science Wars” one, so I figured that I could be petty back- I mean people would like another song?”

That caught Logan’s attention. “Why do you need a means to be petty and what has Princey done this time?”

Virgil went red as he started playing with his mouse. “I… well… Ro was just being Ro and probably doesn’t mean it. It’s just that it felt a little too personal and I didn’t tell him to stop because we were just poking fun at each other but it just kind of stuck with me so I figured that a passive-aggressive science song would make me feel a bit better about the whole thing. Now that I’m saying it all aloud though, I’m realizing how stupid all of it is and I am now just wasting your time and have already wasted a bit of my own time working on it…”

Logan gently moved Virgil’s hand away from the mouse and set it on his chest. “Virgil, breathe with me. We can discuss the cognitive distortions you are experiencing once you are breathing properly.”

Logan quietly worked the man through the breathing exercises, relieved to have a real distraction from his own issues with their other partners. Finally, Virgil was breathing properly and sat back, looking awkward, but otherwise better.

“Now, let’s talk this through. You are welcome to feel whatever you felt regarding Roman’s… comments. Would you be willing to tell me about them?”

Virgil sighed. “It was just passive things like ‘you nerds are so interested in something so out of style’ and that we aren’t even doing anything fun like making iPhone apps or whatever.”

Logan nodded, shoving his own irritation at Roman’s comments aside. “So, you are working on some song to help you achieve what?”

The man’s head hid behind his hands as his voice squirmed out of his fingers. “It’s a Taylor Swift parody of her song ‘Style’ but about science.”

“May I see what you have so far?”

Against what was probably Virgil’s better judgment, he switched to the video ‘script’. Logan scrolled through the work Virgil had already put into this. It was just as dramatic as ‘Science Wars’ had been.

When did he do all of this work? Logan couldn’t help but wonder.

“If it is any consolation to you, Virgil. I believe this would be incredibly well received by our fans. I also believe it is a fair… what is the term?... oh clapback at the science haters.”

“Yeah?”

Logan nodded. “Yes. You have my full support and willingness to participate in this parody for our channel. Please inform me when you wish me to set up our cameras and sound equipment for the recording.”

“Heh. Thanks, Lo.” Virgil had a small grin now, but it quickly vanished. “OK, so my problem has been addressed. What’s got you all weird?”

It was Logan’s turn to sigh. “I may have overheard our partners discussing how my attempts at showing affection are sublime.”

“I don’t see Patton ever saying something like that,” Virgil stated.

Logan nodded. “He wasn’t openly saying it, but he had been with Roman discussing ways to explain what love was because, and I quote, ‘Logan just doesn’t seem to understand’.”

Virgil thought that over before carefully answering. “That still doesn’t feel like something Pat would say or do, Lo. I have a feeling that you are missing a bit of information from what happened.”

He nodded. “That is what I assume as well, but it is still hard to not worry about. I don’t wish to bring this up with Patton as I am sure it was supposed to be a private conversation, but I wish to do something.”

“Huh, same solution for different issues.” Virgil huffed with amusement.

“What do you mean?”

“A science love song,” Virgil answered. “You can show Patton that your understanding of what love is may not be the same as his, but you do understand, and you can fill it with cute little lines that Patton will love.”

Logan thought about it. “I… believe that may work. One issue though, I do not write the songs we perform. You do. I am not well-versed in song-making.”

Virgil smiled at the poor nerd. “You write a bunch of lines about love and science, all your own words, and I can arrange it into a song. I should be finished with my petty revenge by the time you are done.”

“But lines like what? That ‘the chemical formula for love is C8H11NO2+C10H12N2O+C43H66N12O12S2’?”

“‘…and you make my brain the chemist who produces it.’ There you go. One line of science love.” Virgil commented. “Wait, do you really have the formula for love in your memory?”

Logan wasn’t sure he had ever blushed as deep red as he was right then. “I will plead the Fifth before returning to my study to consider what you have proposed.”

“Nerd.” Virgil laughed as he returned to his own work.

 *     *     *     *

 “RoRo, I’m starting to get worried about those two. Neither of them has shown up longer than a few minutes to get more coffee or a snack from the fridge since yesterday morning.”

Roman’s eyebrow shot up. “Well, I figured Vee would be off hiding but Lo is too?”

Patton gave the other a questioning look. “And why do you figure VeeVee?”

“I…Well… We were having some of our normal banter and I think one or two of my comments shook him more than normal. I tried to talk to him about it, but he said that he was fine.”

“Roman, what did you say to our poor anxious babe?”

“It was just normal banter stuff! We were poking fun at each other’s views of Disney, music, YouTube preferences, that sort of thing. I think one just got under his skin this time.”

“And what about Logan?”

“I didn’t say anything to him! Other than my normal morning and proclamations of love for our dear nerd!” Roman threw a hand over his chest, pretending to be offended that Pat would suggest he hurt two of his loves in the same day. “Maybe he’s helping Vee with whatever I said that set him off.”

Pat leaned against the counter thinking. “I don’t know, Ro. I’m just getting worried about the two of them. Normally, they would at least have a meal with us if they were doing stuff.”

“It is nothing to be concerned about, Patton.” Logan’s voice appeared before the man himself. “We are merely working on some interesting video ideas for our channel.”

Roman raised an eyebrow at him. “You almost sound excited, Lo.”

Logan rolled his eyes but didn’t respond to the prince. “Were you requiring us for something, Patton?”

“No, but I can just miss seeing my two favorite science nerds!” Patton answered, cheerfully, desperately trying to keep his concern to a minimum.

Logan started preparing a couple of sandwiches. “Both of us have made sure to seek you out and show you that we are fine, Patton. There is no need to be concerned about Virgil and me. Our video is just very special to the two of us, so we are focused on that right now.”

“What’s the video about, our amazing northern star?” Roman asked.

Logan paused for a moment, which made the sunshine half of the relationship worry even more. “We will show the two of you once we are finished. It’s merely a video about an important formula: C8H11NO2+C10H12N2O+C43H66N12O12S2.”

“And how you have that entire thing memorized is still beyond me!” Virgil stated, making the three men jump, not having noticed him join them.

“I thought you were deep in the middle of the composition, Virge.”

The anxious man grinned as he raised a very familiar item up. “I was, but we ran out of coffee.”

Logan grinned. “Oh, the beloved C25H28N6O7.”

“I guess the nerds aren’t making a video on coffee then?” Roman sounded like he was trying to state it, but his lack of chemical formulas made it into a question.

Patton took the coffee pot from Virgil. “Just how much coffee have you two consumed since yesterday?”

The starlight half glanced at each other before Logan answered. “Together? I want to say about six pots? I assure you that we have also had water and tea intermixed with the coffee.”

Patton’s finger tapped the side of the empty pot. “Before I let you two have another, I would like to ask that you two show up for dinner tonight, alright? Yes, Logan, I can see that you are making Virgil and yourself sandwiches. I still wish to have a proper dinner with all three of my boyfriends!”

Once again, the starlight half looked at each other. This time, the looks were clearly fond and amused, which ease something in Patton.

“Only if we might request that we have the house to ourselves tomorrow. We have quite a bit of recording to accomplish and would like the assurance that we aren’t bothering the two of you.” Logan answered.

“Bothering us? With what? You two rarely make enough noise that it passes through the walls.” Roman commented.

“What is this, 20-questions? Can we just make this request without having to explain everything?” Virgil asked.

Patton sighed. “Alright, but more secrets? I’m starting to become really worried about the two of you. Did we do something wrong? Please, just assure me of that. Did we do or say something wrong to either of you?”

“What?” Logan sounded surprised. “No, of course not, Patton.”

“Well, Ro has said plenty, but nothing is wrong, Pat. We are just excited about what we’re working on and we want to have it finished quickly. The two of you will be the first to see the finished product, Lo and I promise! You’ll understand once you see the video!”

“Alright,” Pat sighed. “I’m not sure what Ro and I will do, but we’ll let you two do your thing tomorrow.”

Logan smiled at him. “Why don’t you leave that to me? This part of the video process is pretty much Virgil’s job anyway. It’ll be a way for us to apologize for worrying you.”

“Oh, you don’t have to! We can figure something out.”

“Have and want are two different things.”

Roman, being the dramatic prince he was, pretended to crumple under the table. “Such horror! Lo-berry using Patty-Cake’s own ideas against him!”

“Perish then,” Virgil stated, taking the coffee pot from Patton and setting the machine up.

 What the sunshine gays wouldn’t find out until dinner was that Logan set them up for a day of their favorite activities, ones that the starlight gays had no interest in participating in. He explained it away to Virgil that Roman wouldn’t be able to complain about never getting to go dancing for at least a month after tomorrow.

Virgil nodded along, knowing that whatever Patton and Roman had actually been discussing, they would understand just how much Logan loved both of them after tomorrow. A full day of things both of them loved and enjoyed? With nothing close to an ‘I’ll do it because someone else loves it’ option? Virgil was watching the planning masterpiece of a man truly in love.

 The next morning, the four boyfriends enjoyed a sleepy breakfast together. Virgil had spent almost an hour making sure everything was perfect before Patton and Roman sat at the table. Logan came down a full ten minutes later but still appreciated the effort Virgil put in, though he was mildly concerned about whether Virgil had actually gone to sleep or not.

Once breakfast was finished, Logan presented Patton and Roman copies of their itinerary. He had already placed an extra in the car and sent a photo of it into their group chat, knowing that the two were probably going to somehow lose the paper copies and, if he were a betting man, one of their phones.

Patton was pulling on his shoes as Virgil started dumping some of their recording stuff on the living room couch. He could see how excited the normally anxiety-ridden man was. Virgil was humming a song, Patton wasn’t sure but it sounded like Taylor Swift, as he worked. The sight was enough to finally get rid of the worry Patton had been feeling and fill him with his own excitement.

Upstairs, Roman was starting to become more confused, rather than relaxed. Logan was acting very… un-Logan-like. He had a small, shy smile as he went about gathering things. Roman was also certain he could hear the normally stoic man muttering science stuff under his breath about atoms, balancing equations, and another chemical formula. Logan even went as far as to compliment Roman’s outfit!

“What is up with you, Calculator Watch!” Roman finally demanded.

Logan looked shocked as his body took an automatic step back. “What are you talking about, Roman?”

“You are acting weirder than normal!”

“Do I not normally compliment your choice of outfit when you dress up?” Logan asked, confused.

“I…Well… Yes, you do… But?”

Logan glanced at his watch. “Patton and you should be leaving fairly soon if you wish to make the movie.”

“Uh… Yeah, right. Off I go, I guess?”

Logan kissed his cheek before returning to whatever it was he had been doing. Roman was feeling even more off now but didn’t say anything else. Downstairs was almost normal if the Emo ever actually listened to pop music. The comment slipped from Roman’s lips before he’d actually thought about it.

“Not my fault that you are constantly getting weird songs stuck in my head. I have to listen to some pop songs in order to finally have at least the full song in my head when one of your random bursts gets a single line stuck.” Virgil answered.

“Oh, just let them be, RoRo. They’re excited about their video, so let them be excited. It’s a nice change compared to their usual show of interest.” Patton said as they got into the car.

“Which is little to none! It’s strange!” he answered.

Patton slipped his hand into Roman’s as he backed out of their driveway. “Put it aside and let’s enjoy our day out. Logan put a lot of thought into it, so let’s make sure we enjoy it!”

“True, alright, Padre, let’s see!” Roman reached into his pocket for his copy of the schedule, only to find it wasn’t there.

“Logan really does know us.” He commented, grabbing the car copy.

 “So, you’re telling me that this song is designed as a simple thing because it’s Logan’s song?”

“Yeah, I figured simpler would be better for him.”

“Gurl, if those two sunshine and rainbow gays do not love this, I say the two of you dump them and let me join. I’ll even bring my own sunshine.”

“Remy, it is not considerate to drag Emile into a polyamorous relationship without consulting with them about it first.”

“Gurl, you are lucky those two will absolutely love this then.”

Virgil rolled his eyes before looking at all the friends who had agreed to help them on such short notice. “Thank you all so much for helping us with this. We have a lot to do, and little time so let’s get this long day of filming over with!”

The team decided to conquer the Science Style video first as there were a lot of working parts to it compared to the Science Love Song. Did everyone in the room know it was insane to try and record two full songs in one day? Yes. Were they determined to beat some imaginary record on video making skills? Absolutely.

As Logan checked in with everyone, he felt relief fill him that Pat and Ro were out for the day. The team had split into different groups: filming, animation and drawing, editing, and sound, each taking up a room of their own. Filming had the living and dining room. The art group had the kitchen, which had the most light as they screamed, kicking out any and everyone trying to take their lighting away. Editing sat in their bedroom, taking advantage of all comfortable spots as they worked. Sound sat in the house’s converted studio. Logan was shocked at the amount of work they were all placing into this video, and he was suddenly struck with something as he knew he couldn’t have ever made better friends.

With his small break, Virgil made everyone sandwiches for lunch. They’d all agreed on pizza for dinner as a reward for all the stuff they had accomplished today, but Virgil figured that sandwiches were a safe enough option for lunch. People would be able to eat them as they wished when they weren’t solely focused on their task. Once that was done, and as he was called back to recording, he sent off the pizza order so that the store had time to make the ten pizzas. Thank goodness for coupons, Virgil couldn’t help but think as he was maneuvered to his spot.

 “RoRo! Look!”

Roman turned and saw a little pottery painting shop. “Lo’s schedule says we’re supposed to be having lunch, Pat.”

“But we’re going to a buffet later! Let’s go make something for our precious scientists! We can make them new coffee mugs!”

Roman pretended to think about it as Patton put up his greatest attack. “Oh no! Patty-dog eyes! One of my three weaknesses! Right up there with Lo’s pleased smirk and Virge’s giggles! I shall never recover from this great defeat! What shall we put on these mugs of those nerds?”

“Well, they are super into whatever science video they are making today, so why don’t we make it something about science for them? LoLo has been super interested in chemistry and those long formula things, so we could put like different ones on it with like the weird drawings that go with them! It’s a simpler idea, but he enjoys the smaller details and we could draw the formulas for happiness, love, interest, that sort of thing. For VeeVee we could do little science images like lab coats, little goggles, and a flask thingy or the Mars rover with the 1s and 0s spelling out ‘we love you’! It’ll be still science-y but full of images of science things he likes!”

Roman nodded as he opened the door for his heart. “How about you work on Lo’s and I do Vee’s? I think I have an idea for his.”

Patton nodded. “Alright, but we are signing both of them with lots of love, OK?”

Roman placed a kiss on the other’s forehead, as a worker came over to help them. “Of course!”

 “OK, Patton just texted saying that they are leaving the swing dance club–which I still do not believe exists, for your information,” Virgil commented to Logan.

Emile giggled. “Guess it’s time for all of us to skedaddle outta here if we want to be One Jump ahead of your SO’s!”

Talyn glanced up from their laptop. “There is still so much editing to do.”

Logan chuckled. “We can explain to those two why you and Joan are on our couch. It means so much that all of you helped us do the impossible. Thank you!”

“Gurl, I think Lo needs to go to bed if he’s getting sentimental. Well, see you ladies and non-binary gentlefolk tomorrow for the adorable reveal!” Remy announced as Emile dragged him out the door.

Logan and Virgil got to cleaning up once everyone but Joan and Talyn was gone. Thankfully, their friends had been neat, so it was mostly straightening things and taking out the trash. The two boyfriends grinned at each other before plopping onto the couch with the last two.

Almost half an hour later, Patton and Roman walked through the door, talking about something they’d seen earlier. They were mildly startled to see two extra people in their living room, but Patton let out a squeal before tackling Talyn in a hug. After some chitchat, Joan suggested they head to the studio to continue working on the edits. Virgil went with them, after telling Patton that Logan was to go to bed. The man did not appreciate it but did as he was told.

Three of the four boyfriends curled up in their bed, unfortunately, used to the forth not being there. Pat pouted at that thought, wishing Vee would go to bed more often, but if Joan and Talyn were going to work through the night on the video edits, Virgil was going to be there as well. Patton didn’t know that the other two in the bed were also thinking the same thing.

 “RoRo and I need to go pick something up. Did you two want us out for longer?”

“Nah, I think we are good to go. Would you mind if some more of our friends came over later though?”

“Our dark prince wanting to throw a party? Who are you and what have you done to our beloved introvert!”

Joan grinned. “Exhaustion has finally claimed the boi!”

“I’m not the one who couldn’t say Viking metal at least.”

“What?”

The two sleepy ones started to giggle while Talyn looked ready to shove them into a fiery pit. “They kept saying Vetal Miking.”

“How the three of you ended up discussing that is beyond me,” Roman commented. “But I have no issue with a friendly get together! How about you, Patty?”

“I’ll be sure to pick up some more snacks! We seemed to have run out.”

Logan snorted which sent all three sleepy ones into a fit of exhausted giggles. He rolled his eyes at them, which made them giggle even harder. Pat and Ro went to pick up their mugs while Logan made Vee, Joan, and Talyn take a nap. Not too long afterwards, Roman and Patton returned with bags, chatting, but were quickly silenced by Lo, who waved at the sleeping figures on the couch. After a quiet lunch, Logan texted their friends that they were welcome to return for the reveal.

It was approximately two hours after lunch, Logan surmised, by the time everyone arrived, each ready to watch the final product of their extensive effort yesterday. He was a bit nervous to see what it looked like as only Virgil, Joan, and Talyn saw what was finished. Finally, Virgil pulled up the first video and told their sunshine half that this was the first of two videos. He started with the Science parody of Style.

Roman instantly knew this was what became of Virgil’s unease with his comments. Not that Virgil would ever know, but Roman tucked away the thought ‘avoid making fun of science videos’ into his list of things not to poke fun at. Despite this, he was laughing with everyone else at the two nerds trying to be cool and just being their nerdy selves.

“I guess I now know why you were humming Taylor Swift yesterday.” He joked once the video was finished.

“You were still the reason I even knew of that song’s existence. So, it’s still your fault.” Virgil laughed. “So, is science out of style?”

Roman laughed as he yanked the nerd into a hug. “I guess not, but you two pretending to have style is so out of style. I love it and I love you dorks.”

“Alright, so next song is quite a bit of a change in tempo from that, so you two enjoy!”

By the point the song got to the line ‘I’ll be your star if you’ll be my space’, Patton was sobbing and clinging to Logan. Lo was adorably shy and smiley and Patton just couldn’t help but cling to the stoic nerd. He didn’t fully understand some of the more specific scientific parts but it was a love song and his two favorite nerds wrote it and like it was perfect!

“Alright, so I understand the first video, but what was up with the second?” Roman asked.

Logan awkwardly cleared his throat. “I may have overheard you and Patton discussing how I don’t seem to understand love, so Virgil proposed that we make a scientific love song.”

“Oh no no no no!” Patton pulled him in even tighter. “I was saying that you didn’t seem to understand what I was doing to show you affection! That wasn’t about you, Logibear! You show love in small things. I wanted to know what I could do to show my love to you, in ways you would be comfortable with!”

“See, there was more that you didn’t know, Lo,” Virgil commented.

“Wait, then what was that formula you were sprouting out then?” Roman asked.

Virgil huffed. “He has the formula for love memorized and tricked me into realizing what it was too! Blasted chemicals for dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin! He tricked me into memorizing the formula as well! He didn’t even use the cute line that started the entire song idea! Like, come on! You’d have been a puddle for ‘the chemical formula for love is C8H11NO2+C10H12N2O+C43H66N12O12S2, and you make my brain the chemist who produces it’.”

“Gurl, I almost want to see you try and shove that line into the song,” Remy commented.

“Actually, that reminds me! RoRo, this is the perfect time to give them their presents!” Patton giggled.

“If our beloved heart says so, then so shall it be!” Roman announced before picking up two bags, one purple, and the other navy.

“GAAAAAAY!” one of their friends called, causing an amused chuckle to ripple through the group.

Logan and Virgil accepted their bags with confusion. Logan pulled his mug out first and looked over the various chemicals and their structural formula designed on the mug. Each was in one of their favorite colors. Dopamine was in red. Oxytocin was in a navy blue whereas Serotonin was in a lighter blue. The final formula was endorphins, which were in purple. Logan bit his tongue as he began to pick out the minor errors in the structural formulae. He would probably end up taking a Sharpie or something and carefully fixing the errors later, but for now, he vocally praised the mug, knowing that Pat and Ro designed it with him in mind, which was more worthy of his attention than some small errors.

Virgil pulled his mug out to find the word STEAM on it. Behind each letter was a cartoon of something related to it. The ‘S’ had a lab coat, goggles and a beaker like a scientist. The ‘T’ had an iPhone with little apps that Roman has suggested Virgil attempt to make. ‘E’ had a computer screen on it with a bunch of 0s and 1s on the screen (which Roman would later tell him was binary code for ‘we love you’ and Virgil did not tear up at that, no siree). ‘A’ was the props from their Science Wars video. ‘M’ had a coordinate plane with the shape and equation of a heart on it. It was so extra and so obviously Princey and Patton that Virgil couldn’t help but love the mug, even if it were a bit more eccentric than his normal style.

“Wow, you two are just as nerdy as we are.” Virgil commented, before yanking the other three into a tight hug.

“Well, we do happen to have two brilliant scientists as our boyfriends, so it was bound to happen that we would pick up some nerdy things.” Patton giggled.

The group hung out for a bit before people had to get going. Logan stopped Remy and Emile before insisting that they ensure Joan and Talyn got home safely. The non-binary pals tried to fight it, but Mama Remy was already in full swing, so they accepted their fate. Virgil watched, knowing that they had it lucky, especially when Mama Lo turned on him.

Half an hour later, Virgil was cocooned in blankets with his boyfriends surrounding him on their bed, ensuring that he wouldn’t make a bid for freedom. He had a fat smile on his face as Pat and Ro gushed over the videos and Lo explained some of the finer points to them.

How two scientists managed to fall in love with these two rays of sunlight, Logan could only theorize. He did know that they were the loves of his life. He watched as his starlight fell asleep to the sunshine’s chatter, finding his eyes getting heavy as well.

Patton was unsurprisingly the next one to fall into the realms of sleep. While he loved the videos equally, the love song was soft and specifically for them. His mind couldn’t help but replay every word from it, softly singing him to sleep with the insanely intelligent men around him.

Roman was the last to give in. He carefully set aside Lo and Pat’s glasses so that they didn’t accidentally break them. Roman smiled, staring at his three loves: Logan, his stars; Virgil, his moon; and Patton, his sun. He gave an amused huff as he shut his eyes. Maybe Lo and Vee did rub some of their nerdiness on him, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows Vol 2 #6-7 Thoughts

Okay I’ve finally caught up to where I left off with RYV in 2017 so these are my thoughts on the X-Men arc.

I have very mixed feeling about this arc depending upon what POV I look at it from.

As a general story unto itself and an instalment in this series it was pretty great.

However in the context of an AU series with a limited shelf-life as is and in a context when Spider-Man had so often been sharing the spotlight (and the Spider-Marriage hadn’t been seen) making what amounted to a standard paint by numbers X-Men story just from the Parker’s POV was very questionable even if I like the X-Men.

Finally from the POV of a guy who likes the X-Men but isn’t hardcore but is very much in love with 90s X-Men (which this version is based upon) my feelings are very mixed.

And that boils down to what I love about the X-Men and that era of the X-Men vs. how Conway apparently feels about them.

But let’s get general perennial opinions out the way. I’ve grown to begrudgingly accept the conceit of this series as a Spider Family book and a book where we are just going to ignore the child endangerment issues at play. But i’ve spoken about that before in my older coverage of issues #1-5. Similarly in those issues and it still holds true for this arc, Stegman is the goddam man when it comes to the artwork.

Whilst there was one panel in which he tried to draw MJ shocked and upset and it came off just goofy, over all the artwork in this arc was stunning and I genuinely said ‘wow’ out loud when I got to the splash page of Spider-Man and Wolverine.

Keeping on the visuals for a moment, I goddam love the costumes chosen for the characters here. Yes even the reimagined looks for Toad, Crucible and Mist Mistress.

Obviously I don’t talk X-Men here much but I adore the 1990s X-Men costumes from the 1992 cartoon, which originated under Jim Lee. And honestly they genuinely are among the most iconic and visually dynamic looks for the characters so it’s not purely personal preference. This is especially resonant for me with Wolverine. Spider-Man is my favourite (American comic book) character and following him are various Spider-Verse characters like MJ, Norman Osborn, Ben Reilly, Mayday, etc.

But outside of those Spider-Verse characters, Wolverine is my absolute fav Marvel character and it’s always annoyed me that Marvel were like embarrassed to put him in his classic Giant-Sized X-Men uniform once Whedon began writing X-Men.

That is THE iconic Wolverine look and in this story Stegman brought it back baby!

Similarly I appreciated that the Magneto of this story both looked and acted like classic Magneto. Not the aweful black and silver shit he was wearing around this time in the comics and I’ve never been fond of him as a good guy member of the X-Men.

Honestly, whilst I get it was well executed character development, Magneto is inherently more interesting as a morally grey antagonist for the X-Men than among their ranks. So much of the core premise of X-Men is built around the fundamental philosophical conflict between Magneto’s beliefs and Xaviers that you lose a not insignificant chunk of the essence of X-Men when you put them on the same side. Not to mention in a superhero story you want strong characters as antagonists and Magneto is arguably the best X-Men villain, scratch that best comic book villain, ever.

Okay now let’s chat story.

I wasn’t pleased with  the deaths in this. Banshee might be few people’s fav  but Beast was and in both cases their quick shock deaths were unearned and unworthy. Kind of overly dark to be honest with you given the nature of the RYV book and it gave the impression that Conway isn’t fond of either character.

But that sentiment shines through far more poignantly with Jubilee and Cyclops. Whilst Cyclops gets screwed over slightly less badly than he did in the X-Men movies, the same problems occur. He gets undermined in favour of Wolverine and so Logan and Jean can be shipped together. Which is only a different flavour of frustrating if you LIKE the Cyclops/Jean relationship as I do, than when Jean got screwed over so Scott and Emma could hook up. I still despise that.*

But at least this was kind of believable, at least to me. No X-Men expert so maybe their break up was OOC, but the idea that Cyclops and Jean broke up because Jean didn’t have faith in controlling her Godlike powers whilst Cyclops did is an interesting piece of relationship drama. And at least the characters in RYV didn’t get fucked as hard as they did in the 2000s.

Still you can kind of tell Conway isn’t a big fan of Cyclops (understandable he has his haters, I hate 2000s-2010s Cyclops) but you can equally tell he really doesn’t like Jubilee.

Again, not an X-Men expert here but I’m pretty sure Jubilee being a traitor to the X-Men and being disillusioned by Xavier’s methods is immensely OOC for her character.

Now that isn’t that big of a deal because this is an AU at the end of the day. But if you like Jubilee or just know her character then it will probably annoy you. Unfortunately for one reason or another Jubilee in my observations seems to get a lot of hate that Kitty Pryde and X-23 don’t and I do not understand why.

In the cases of both characters I could tell instantly that Conway was setting one of them up to be the traitor and honestly if you are doing an AU book, Cyclops is kind of the more interesting choice although I grant you maybe not in the context of 2010s Cyclops who already murdered Xavier in AvX and has been a douchebag for a long time. But in the context of this story and 1990s X-Men which this story is trading off of, it’s the more interesting choice. I will give it to Conway though for at least bothering to give us 2 suspects. These days most writers wouldn’t even bother with that and just think they were being subtle when they have Jubilee say shit like “Maybe your human friend wouldn’t like you if she knew you were a mutant!”

On some final notes about the X-Men themselves I feel like there was maybe something more interesting you could’ve done with Jean and Wolverine’s child than what we got with Shine. In her personality and powers she could be any one of the army of Summers/Grey children or any given generic mutant. There is no Wolverine in her to be seen.

That’s not me inherently hating her. She’s just more of a missed opportunity. She was adorable unto herself and even moreso in her relationship with Annie and I hope that gets revisited in consequent issues.

My final little note regarding the X-Men themselves was that I didn’t care for Magneto being mind controlled at the end or his over all plan.

Okay, it’s more like I felt his plan was underdeveloped. Because it’s not that it didn’t make sense because it was literally the same plan from X2: X-Men United. But Conway basically expected you to have just known  that because of the visuals and results of the plan. And for comic book and comic book movie fans like me, sure I know the shorthand but it’s not good storytelling. Similarly Emma Frost shows up at the end, barely talks but just kind of takes over as the main villain when Magneto had been the guy built up in the story and...he, he’s Magneto dude. That’s like having Puppet Master show up towards the end of a story where Doom’s been the main villain and take over.

Also doesn’t his helmet shield him from psychic control? I mean again it’s an AU and I feel like that wasn’t established until way later about Magneto but still.

I also wanna talk about how this arc more than anything else just blows up the continuity between RYV volume 1 and volume 2.

In RYV vol 1 #1 it was a big deal that the X-Men got wiped out by Regent and the implication was that the universe diverged in the early-mid 1990s.

In this arc though it’s made crystal clear that obviously the X-Men are fine and that in this universe (the dumpster fire clusterfuck that was) Civil War 2006 was avoided.

Which is again an example of Conway subtly saying screw you to stuff he doesn’t like but I don’t mind that because yeah screw Civil War it was hot trash. But it does make RYV volume 1 way more confusing in terms of continuity, especially since literally no other post-Secret Wars ongoing series (including X-Men ’92) seemed to radically alter their universe after the event like RYV did.

Honestly I think the only way to have it make sense is to just say RYV volume 2 is an alternate version of the RYV volume 1 characters and that prior to volume 2 a guy called the Regent showed up, stole some people’s powers then Spider-Man and his family stopped him. He didn’t kill anyone, he didn’t take over the world, he wasn’t trying to kill God Emperor Doom or whatever and the world didn’t know who Spider-Man was by the end of it.

This actually jives way better with what Houser would later establish in her run on RYV that Annie isn’t a daughter Peter and MJ had INSTEAD of Mayday, but in fact the daughter they would’ve had if OMD hadn’t fucked everything up. I guess in the RYV universe though Spider-Man never joined the Avengers and fashion was stuck in the 1990s even in the 2000s.

I’m not complaining I’m just trying to get all this stuff straight.

Okay let’s move onto the Parker family.

I loved the payoff to issue #2 with MJ planning a party and it turning out to be for Peter’s birthday. That was the best scene in the whole story. Normal life drama with supporting characters we know and love. This is the heart of Spider-Man! And it came with adorable scenes like Annie confronting the horror of gluten free desserts and acknowledgments of Aunt May and Aunt Anna’s deaths.

The heart of the story was the stuff related to whether Peter and MJ should make Annie stay at the Xavier school or not and the scenes exploring this were really good.

Spider-Man deal with relatively relatable everyday issues and failing that stuff that s clearly allegorical to said issues. In this case Annie’s powers are allegorical to a kid with a disability, special learning issues, or someone with a particular aptitude for learning that would make a normal school more challenging.

Special props goes to Peter relating to how he struggled in school and not wanting that for Annie. In MJ’s case though she wants to keep her daughter close. This makes sense retroactively when you consider she’s already lost one child and if you pretend RYV vol 1 happened then she spent years keeping Annie close out of fear that she died.

Putting those aside though it could be a commentary upon MJ’s own childhood growing up where she was constantly being uprooted and saw her family and her sister’s family fall apart. For MJ it’s likely very important that the family unit stay close together.

Conway’s writing shines because he organically (albeit not as subtly as he could) has them switch positions creating yet more potential conflict and makes sure Annie has her own view on the matter. She likes the school, she likes Shine but she doesn’t want things to change and justifies this in a childish way by making out a popular kid in her school is a bigger deal than she actually is.

My major point of condemnation though is that I feel way more could’ve been done with the premise (e.g. having MJ and Jean connect over super powered kids) than actually was because so much of the plot is dominated by villains invading the Xavier school for the umpteenth time.

Actually goes into two other problems with the arc. This is an incredibly generic X-Men storyline because obviously it’s from a Spider-Man perspective. Like if an X-Men story tried to present a window into the world of Spider-Man it’d be a typical thing about him making rent, working for Jameson and missing a date or whatever. It’s like default setting X-Men and whilst I like that because I miss those days before X-Men became a clusterfuck, it’s not the most compelling main plot in the world.

And honestly it wraps up too quickly and easily, MJ just decks Emma Frost and the story is done. Annie and Peter don’t get involved enough which is weird because isn’t this a team book? I mean as the story highlights it makes Mj look cool but I don’t like doing that at the expense of the other characters.

Now in fairness that might’ve been set up for the next arc, which I know is about MJ becoming Venom. The last page or two of the arc implies this because it features an overtly villainous Liz Allan.

At first I raised my eyebrow at this. Around that same time Liz had been presented as evil in the 616 books and I thought this might’ve been lame out of nowhere synergy.

But in thinking about it, if this really is a Liz Allan who is recently went through the stuff she dealt with in DeMatteis’ Harry Osborn arc from the 1990s (as is the implication) then Liz would be a darker person, would be more hard hearted to protect her son and she wasn’t the nicest person to the Parkers at that time.

Although issue #4 had MJ refer to Normie as creepy implying the Osborns and Parkers generally aren’t all that close in this universe.

Regardless Liz with the Venom symbiote targeting MJ and having the there be an explicit thematic connection between them via their shared motherhood was a darkly delicious moment.

As many mixed feelings as I have for this arc over all I give it a solid B.

*Hence I personally also loved Emma Frost just being a plain villain and getting decked by MJ because I goddam hate Emma Frost I really do.

With the election looming, a number of pro-Trump caravans across the U.S. snarled traffic and raised tensions in some cities over the weekend, most notably in Texas, where the FBI is investigating after pro-Trump drivers surrounded a Biden-Harris campaign bus on an interstate.

The escalations appear to have the support of the president, who has consistently tried to frame street violence as a Democratic issue while previously condoning, failing to condemn or just looking the other way on confrontations or violence linked to his own supporters.

“This story is FALSE. They did nothing wrong,” President Trump tweeted Monday, responding to a CNN report about the FBI investigating possible harassment of the Biden-Harris bus by Trump supporters. “But the ANTIFA Anarchists, Rioters and Looters, who have caused so much harm and destruction in Democrat run cities, are being seriously looked at!”

A spokesperson for the San Antonio field office of the FBI confirmed the existence of an investigation regarding the bus confrontation, in which a pro-Trump vehicle appeared to collide with another vehicle.

“We’re aware of the incident, and we’re investigating, and we don’t have any updates at this time,” spokesperson Michelle Lee told the Los Angeles Times, declining to provide further details. Neither Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden nor vice-presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris of California were aboard the bus.

The incident was just one of several in recent days as Trump supporters rallied in “Trump trains” or “MAGA drags” to demonstrate support before Tuesday’s election. In recent months, many Trump supporters have grown increasingly willing to make shows of street strength, an escalation that has also increased the possibility and likelihood of confrontation with opposing liberals.

The caravans appeared to be organized with help from a group called MAGA Drag the Interstate, which describes itself as “a grassroots assemblage of patriots from across the United States who are tired of seeing our Country attacked and slandered by violent and seditious radicals,” according to the group’s website.

The idea of the “drags” is to “decorate our cars with signage and flags and organize into peaceful and spirited rolling rallies that blanket the country with hope, a spirit of patriotism, and a reminder that we are more united than divided.” The group added, “We do not support violence, racism, or bigotry, of any kind, from any side of the aisle.”

The group did not immediately respond to a request for comment through its website Monday evening and did not list any future events on its website. The group’s social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter appeared to have been suspended or deactivated.

Some events, as in Temecula, Calif., on Sunday, were boisterous but peaceful as thousands of Trump supporters converged on the Ronald Reagan Sports Park, where the biggest problem seemed to be the traffic. “Please be courteous to other drivers … Do not engage in altercation with haters. With that being said look out for one another,” a flier said. “Let’s celebrate God, country, and 4 more years of Donald J. Trump!!!”

About 1,300 vehicles reportedly joined a similar roadway rally in Houston.

Other events escalated as Trump supporters met opponents. After one “Trump Train” entered Richmond, Va., on Sunday afternoon, a woman at the city’s Robert E. Lee Monument circle reported being pepper-sprayed from a vehicle, and officers also responded to an unoccupied vehicle getting hit with a gunshot, according to local police, who did not attribute the violence to either side.

Witnesses said “one or more of the supporters of President Donald Trump in the train of cars was spraying chemical irritants at an opposing crowd that was trying to block the cars from passing,” the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. “One man said he narrowly avoided being run over by jumping onto the hood of a car. Another man said he ducked just in time as someone fired a gun at him from a truck, after someone else had pulled a Trump flag off one of the vehicles.”

In Marin City, Calif., the San Francisco Chronicle reported that a caravan of Trump supporters gathered at the Gateway Center and culminated with “some members hurling racial epithets at bystanders in what is Marin County’s only predominantly minority community.”

Supporters of the president also temporarily blocked traffic on major highways in New York City and New Jersey on Sunday.

The shows of strength are making some Democrats uneasy. Carly Logan, a restaurateur in Phoenix, passed a long caravan of Trump supporters driving slowly enough to cause a significant backup on Sunday, which she found unsettling. They were almost all trucks, with flags on the back.

“That’s the concern for a lot of people — that he’ll win the election and there’ll be civil unrest,” Logan said.

“I’m praying not,” she said of the prospect of conflict as election results pour in Tuesday night, and beyond. “I’m praying not.”

19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

I’m not involved enough in other fandoms to answer this question, so, regarding the Buffyverse, I think extreme Spike fans, Angel haters and intense Spuffy shippers annoy me the most. I don’t understand Spike or Spuffy stans at all and have been very grossed out by their arguments many times. There are Spike fans that excuse Spike’s bad behavior and almost twist it as a positive. Some fans blame Buffy for the AR because she “led him on”. And Angel haters, I don’t get because I love Angel and I’ve seen some really WTF arguments against him - that made me want to bleach my eyes a bit. This isn’t a large portion of the fandom, but it’s a portion I try to ignore. 

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Buffy and Angel. This is the purest ship of all the fandoms. And yes, Buffy and Angel have a lot of bad history between them, but their love is beyond pure. It’s unshakable, eternal, incorruptible.

21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?

I don’t have any crackships I think? I mean, I think Anya and Giles together is appealing, and have considered the awesomeness of Logan and Paris, but usually, I don’t crackship. I have no problem with people who do though.

22. Popular character you hate?

Spike. I truly despise Spike after season 3. Everything about him annoys me. I hate his perverted behavior in season 5, his emotional manipulation and abuse in season 6, his soulless behavior while ensouled in season 7, and just how he is such a bullshitter overall. He’s regarded as the character that speaks the truth but he often speaks of things he couldn’t possibly understand. He’s also so melodramatic and spineless. 

I also dislike Glory who is relatively popular. 

From the Gilmore Girls fandom, I have to agree with everything @sleeplessbutdreaming said about Luke. I too find him to be an unpleasant asshole. But I also dislike Lorelai, it’s not hatred, but particularly in the early seasons, she was so immature! I find Lorelai to be hypocritical, arrogant, careless, selfish. I don’t know if Richard is popular, but he’s such an arrogant, cold, manipulative, calculating, deceitful wanker! 

From the TVD fandom, I don’t really love Bonnie, for example. She can be unfair, unpleasant and harsh. She’s also used too much like a plot device. Let’s keep her dead until we need a witch to the rescue.. which is why I don’t like Freya from The Originals. Oh, and speaking of TO, there are no words to describe how much I hate that immature, delusional, submissive scum of a human being called Camille. 

23. Unpopular character you love?

Connor!! I love him so much! He’s my fictional son. Everyone hates him and what the show turned into after his birth, but I disagree. Connor is sweet, caring, strong, capable, heroic, innocent, pure of heart. 

I also love, love Logan. Not only is he intelligent, charming, fun, sweet, attentive, but he is so self aware. He’s one of the few GG characters that doesn’t live in a bubble. He sees the word for what he is, sees his money and privilege for what it is and, as such, is one of the few characters that changes and is capable of growth (unlike Lorelai). 

26. Most shippable character?

I don’t ship most characters with anyone, and I’m also not a multishipper in general. However, I’d say Wesley and Willow are the most shippable characters. I liked Wesley and Virginia (does anyone even remember her?), Wesley and Lilah (OTP), Wesley and Fred (liked, not loved), and I even lowkey ship Wesley and Angel, and understand those who ship him with Illyria. As for Willow, I don’t dislike any of her partners (Oz, Willow or Kennedy). 

27. Least shippable character?

Ugh, has to be Dawn, Connor, Lorne and Illyria because they are practically assexual to me.
