Fic Recs: “The Exorcist” Edition

As some of you might know (but probably not all of you, since it wasn’t the most well-known of shows), FOX’s The Exorcist TV series was cancelled earlier this month. I am actually a really new viewer to this show; I don’t consider myself much of a horror fan at all, and I’m not familiar with the original Exorcist book or movie. But I had seen the gifsets you all had posted, and the praise you had layered on the show, and it prompted me to give it a try.

Besides discovering that this is a really amazing show, the other thing I’ve found after a couple months in this fandom is that, for a community so small, the fic is exceptional. Like, I feel bad that this show has so small of a fanbase because these fics deserve so many more readers. I’ve stayed up late into many a night consuming chapter after chapter of the multi-chapter fics and AUs that this fandom produces. And it occurs to me that it’s time to share them with you. I hope this inspires you, if nothing else, to read these amazing stories. And maybe, if you really like them, you’ll start watching the show as well.

It’s cancelled, yes. But it’s worth it.

(By the way, if you’re recced on this list, I probably owe you a comment on your fic. If it’s a comfort to you, I marathon-read most of these fics so fast and so voraciously that I didn’t leave myself any time to comment! But I look forward to leaving you feedback.)

1) the “León de mi Corazón” series by @clockheartedcrocodile; Marcus/Tomas, explicit; multi-chapter, series, complete

I consider this series to be a seminal work in the Marcus/Tomas fandom. Beautifully, atmospheric writing that gently expands on the characters as we know them. There’s an emphasis on poetry, and on the dance these characters make towards each other, both of them wounded and wary while at the same time impossibly capable of love. Each fic chronicles a different stage in their relationship, and also a different possession “case” in a different location (except the third, which revolves much more around personal spirituality than their careers as exorcists). They’re beautiful and everyone in the fandom should read them. (Also, as an aside: what is it with my fandoms and future-fics where a pairing lives on a plot of land with orange trees?)

2) “Hace Tanto Que Te Quiero” by @meduseld; Marcus/Tomas, teen, one-shot

A meditation on love, and how it manifests in intimate and yet mosty-platonic forms. This one was just posted today, so it’s a little quick to be included on a fic-rec post, but I read it this morning and it was just so beautiful that I wanted to put it in here with all the rest of the stories that have been around for longer.

3) “i’ve got my mind set on you” by @reckonedrightly; Marcus/Peter, explicit, one-shot

This fic contains possibly my favorite Marcus in any fic I’ve read so far- sassy and tortured and emotionally vulnerable all rolled up into one. Peter is just as he is in the series, endlessly patient and careful with him; this author clearly watched the Peter/Marcus scenes in the show itself very closely and their characterization matches perfectly. I would love to see so much more of the way this person writes these two characters in particular; they’re just beautiful. Starts after the final episode of season 2 and continues, in a pretty canon-compliant fashion, from that point onward.

4) “Up Jumped the Devil” by @clockheartedcrocodile; Marcus/Tomas, explicit; multi-chapter, complete

An AU in which Tomas is a preacher from Chicago (like he is in the actual series) who gets sent to a remote rural congregation whose famous feature is that once a month, the pastor reaches into a pit of snakes and pulls one out without getting bitten. Marcus is a roving exorcist (like he is in the actual series) except with the particular flavor of a Southern Gothic tale rather than a religious horror one. Many hallmarks of the show are present here, just in different forms, and the narrative tension is tight as a wire.

5) “i sent you three boats” by @reckonedrightly; Marcus/Tomas, mature; multi-chapter, in progress

This story has been a joy to read so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens as more chapters are added. It throws us right into the middle of an exorcism, and the premise centers around the idea that in the aftermath of this particularly difficult possession, Fr. Bennett arranges for both Marcus and Tomas to “retire” to a small parish in Michigan. There are complications, of course, and questions as to whether the demons follow them even to this new place, but we’re introduced to interesting new characters and we get to see Marcus and Tomas as fish out of water in this new location. They’ve spent most of the fic so far being stupidly oblivious to each other’s feelings, and now that they’re finally starting to realize, things are about to get really interesting!

6) “ego te absolvo” by peacefrog; Marcus/Tomas, teen; multi-chapter, in progress

In which Marcus and Tomas are neighboring small-town parish priests, Marcus a former exorcist and Tomas a regular preacher, who are developing an increasingly close friendship. Marcus is more and more becoming consumed by traumas from his past, and Tomas is (and has been, if the fic is any indication) trying to gently get him to open up and let Tomas in, both as a friend and as someone with the potential for something more. Lots of angst and hurt/comfort here. The slow-burn of watching them inch closer and closer to acknowledging their feelings is really fun.

7) “Martyrs of the Great Plains” by @nookienostradamus; Marcus/Tomas, explicit; multi-chapter, complete

Another slice-of-life on-the-road fic, this one taking place between seasons 1 and 2. Each chapter includes the motif of a saint, called to mind by whatever the characters are experiencing or feeling in that chapter. There’s more Catholic guilt in here, but that’s par for the course in fics for this show; Marcus’ self-castigation could probably be sensed from space, and there’s angst aplenty because of that. But in exactly the way we love most about him, Tomas pushes him out of his shell and gets him to let go of some of that pain. Each of these fics in this fandom gets them to that place a little bit differently, and that’s what I love about them.

Ahh, it’s such a good piece. And I love love love that they’re using it as the main promo piece, too; how often do we have an image of a glorious butch as the main public face of queer history?

I also got real teary at Oscar Wilde’s prison door. And came away with a new sartorial spinster role model in Edith Sitwell: look how fabulous (and then later saw a collection of her rings at the V&A; gigantic and chunky and fabulous)

10 question fic writing

[i really wanted to do this one and also am hoping it’ll get me back to my current wip after this like 55 hr work week fjldskfj]

1) What’s your favourite genre to write? mysteryyyy and just general adventure but with elements of fantasy, the supernatural, and/or detective/noir

2) Do you pull inspiration from real-life or do you pull things from other books/fanfiction you’ve read? the only things I’ve ever pulled from another written work are so minimal (for original stuff, maybe a general setting or main character’s occupation—for fics, maybe a direction for an AU); otherwise, inspo comes from things I’m researching, things I’m already super passionate about, a lot of “what-ifs” or me saying “hm I’m adopting this cast of characters”

3) Do you tend to write one-shots, short stories or longer things? for whatever reason, one-shots seem so unsatisfying to write? i love reading them but i have this complex where i feel like if i am going to write something, it’s gotta be a Whole Thing

4) Do you prefer writing descriptions or dialogue? dialogue! my fics basically start out as TV scripts and then I add all of the “prose” in between conversations

5) Favourite fic/book of all the time? literally the best fic I ever read was No Bangs Without Foreign Office Approval by reckonedrightly (fem!Sherlock/fem!John, WWII AU, 200k, it’s sooo gooooood and partly why I post ‘footnotes’ on my own stuff)

um some very good books are “A Canticle for Leibowitz” by walter m. miller jr., “A Lost Lady” by willa cather, “A Doll’s House” (this one’s a play) by henrik ibsen, “Kindred” by octavia butler

7) Are you the kind of person to work on more than one wip? uhhh like in my brain sure? i’ll start plotting multiple things at a time but typically just write-write one at a time

8) How long have you been writing for? HM. literally since I was 6 or 7. I once wrote and illustrated my own Scooby-Doo mystery with printer paper and crayons <3

9) Do you tend to write more during the morning, afternoon or evening? usually always evening to very late at night; when I tried nanowrimo in high school i’d sneak some writing in during class and lunch breaks and on the bus

10) Do you ever prefer to post and update your wip chapter by chapter, or do you prefer to wait until your wip is 100% finished before sharing it? fpfpfpfp um well i’ve only got the one wip actually partially published in chapters rn. if i ever write a one-shot/piece under than like 10k i’d probably just do it all at once

For the would-you-evers: Star Trek fanvid? A Supernatural humans-only AU? For Holmesian things: a supernatural AU? Gender swap (and if so, who)?

Ooh yay, thanks so much for playing the meme with me! Would I ever make…

A Star Trek fanvid: Sure! I have all of Star Trek TOS on DVD so it would be easy to get my footage for that one. I don’t actually ship any of the TOS ships, but that series is wide open for gen ensemble silliness and/or character studies, either of which I could see myself joyfully doing! The Star Trek series I would most like to vid, though, is DS9, and in fact I have been actively planning a Garak/Bashir vid in my head set to Hozier’s “From Eden.” But I don’t own DS9 on DVD and my library system doesn’t have it either, and I don’t know how to rip sources that are only available on digital streaming sites like Netflix…my impression is that they work pretty hard to make it difficult to copy that stuff. So I have a plan! I just need to get ahold of the DS9 DVDs, which may take a while.

A Supernatural humans-only AU: Absolutely. I mean, I love Cas’s angelic-ness and his otherness and his magic, but honestly half the SPN fics I read are human-only AUs, and I love them, too! If I can think of a premise that pleases me, I will definitely go for it. And I am currently cheerleading for my friend viridiandecision’s human-only librarian!AU WIP. She keeps sending me thirsty snippet descriptions of librarian Cas and I keep swooning!

Also, I will add that I wouldn’t even have to go AU for this, because the series itself turned Cas human for about 10 episodes and everyone, including the actor, wishes they’d spent more time on that arc. It was wall-to-wall with whump, and repressed tenderness, and near-death experiences, and Dean having to sacrifice Cas’s safety in order to save his brother and *hating* himself for it, and Cas being forgiving and loving the instant he found out the real reason why Dean had to abandon him. There was even an episode where Dean drove off with Cas one night after Cas had nearly died, and then the next scene took place the following morning with Dean dropping Cas off at work, so they actually canonically spent the night together. This off-screen night has been rapturously embraced by a grateful fandom and labelled ‘The Fanfic Gap,’ so in short this is a rich vein of episodes to work with and one day I may play in that playground :)

A Holmesian supernatural AU: I adore bringing fantasy elements and magic realism and fairy tale/mythology into Holmes stories, especially ACD-era ones. The BBC Sherlock fandom is absolutely rife with such fusions, and many of my personal favorite stories are in that genre. But it’s rare to find supernatural elements of any kind in ACD Holmes stories, so I relish them all the more. It’s a rather tame sort of supernaturalness, but I am currently working on an ACD Holmes wing!fic in which Holmes has the wings of a goshawk, and Watson those of a skylark. I hope to expand on the two ficlets I’ve already written: Stormy Petrels and Seventeen Steps. I have a long outline in which I’ve been doing some avian!London worldbuilding, and I’ve been watching documentaries on goshawks in my spare time. I think there is actually a decent chance that I will write this thing; it’s certainly further along in the planning stages than anything else Holmesian I’ve got in my WIP folders. Plus, I relish the prospect of writing vulture!Mycroft, I love him already :)

Gender swap: I love reading well done genderswap stories, and I’ve been lucky enough to come across some really amazing ones in many of my fandoms. I love your ACD Holmes-and-Watson double swap, I Am The Girl For Her. I love pendrecarc’s BBC double swap Boston Marriage, and rosa_acicularis’s female!John in Arcana gets her hands around my heart and won’t let go. Reckonedrightly wrote a delicious female!Vetinari in Ladies Who Organise; Mercy wrote a pitch-perfect female!Dean Winchester in Queen of Nothing. Characters I’d love to see a good genderswap story for include: Illya Kuryakin (Man from UNCLE), Charles Xavier or Erik Lehnsherr or both (X-Men First Class); Severus Snape and/or Remus Lupin (Harry Potter); and Castiel (SPN). I don’t know if I’m the one to write them, but only because I have so much respect for the nuanced character work that goes into these things that I am a little bit intimidated :)

A. what’s your favourite fandom to write? 

All of these are gonna be so hard to answer :D Gosh. I am really loving writing for Community right now, so I’d probably have to go with that. I usually have one central fandom I write for- which is Community at the moment- and then a couple random fics for others on the back burner, so the central fandom at any given moment is always gonna be my fave.

C. what fandom(s) did you start writing? 

The very first fandom I ever wrote for was a fic for the TV series Angel when I was...maybe 14? It’s not posted anymore so I can’t check exactly when it was written, but that feels about right. (I did find the very first chapter on one of those internet archive search sites, like the Wayback Machine, once and reread it. It was BAD.)

D. what fandom(s) do you write now? 

I write primarily for Community right now, but my eternal standby fandom is the All For the Game book series, which I contribute a couple fics a year to even though it’s no longer my central fandom. (I actually missed the deadline to sign up for this year’s Spring Exchange, sadly, so maybe I’ll try to pinch-hit or just contribute to a later exchange for them!) There’s also a couple fics for The Magicians in the works, but I haven’t gotten those anywhere near posting yet.

Have you ever read 'And also with you' by reckonedrightly?

I feel like I saw it but then ran away because it had a genderqueer Jim, and at the time (lol 'at the time', fuck, right now as I speak) this fandom had a really bad problem with femmephobia, and transmisogyny, and just general queerphobic grossness with his character. So not knowing the author I wouldn't have touched it just incase.

But now that I'm a bitter and dead inside from what I’ve seen this fandom do to him, I did read it a few moments ago and it's not anything like the problem I described before so kudos.

Logan prequel which @jackmarlowe and I have been working on, after we came out of the cinema with the question, “Where the fuck was Magneto?” Chapter 1 includes flashbacks, dementia, psychic disasters, a jailbreak, something that’s not quite a rescue and the start of a long journey. 

Caliban is suddenly hyper-aware of the little details Logan’s left in his space — his unfinished coffee mug, the bloody tissues and empty T-gel sachets in the garbage. As if Magneto can sniff these things out as well as him. “How good of him,” he remarks, settling again on Caliban with his calm grey stare and pointedly, it feels, not asking where he fits into the equation. “Where is Charles?”

After the Westchester disaster, Logan wants Charles Xavier out of the country. Erik Lensherr, newly escaped from prison, has other ideas.
