One of the things I love about Tumblr (and one of the reasons I stay with this hellsite [affectionate]) is that this is possibly the most playful social media site I've ever seen, culturally speaking.
The reaction to polls is an excellent example. Like, you'd expect a site, when it institutes polls, to get polls like, "Who's your favorite character?" or "What should I make for lunch?" Instead, we do bug races, polls specifically designed to get a 50-50 result and counting on the respondents to react accordingly, possibly futile attempts to get folks to get something resembling the correct ingredient ratio for a cake, etc etc.
We gift each other infestations of crabs which we receive with delight, trying to befriend every crustacean that scuttles across our desktop. We create memes, applying the format to everything we can think of until it's almost divorced completely from its origins.
We realize how silly we all are being and are willing to poke fun at ourselves.
The reblog format encourages a culture of building upon each other's thoughts, sometimes in more chaotic manners than you'd think possible, which makes it all the more delightful.
Meanwhile, tags let us express opinions sotto voce as well as letting us catalog posts, which, again, isn't what that function was designed for, but this is a site that is playful and will poke at any new function and go, "but how else can I use this?"
And this is an environment which incubates creativity. True, there are downsides to all of this — purity culture, folks saying You're Doing It Wrong, etc etc, but all those downsides I've seen in one form or another on other social media sites.
That sense of play? That's tumblr. And that's what makes the community here.

Rampage thinks Depth Charge is cute.
Depth Charge / Rampage K+ mild violence
Here I am again, here to make everything worse for everyone. Rejoice.
-----
It was quiet
much too quiet. Rampage had walked himself almost all the way back to the Predacon base, as much as he hated the place and pretty much everyone it contained. Sometimes the other Predacons weren't completely terrible to be in proximity of, but other times they were downright annoying and selfish, it was embarrassing
not that Rampage had any reason to feel embarrassed on their behalves.
Instead, Rampage had taken the time to set up a comfortable area for himself to spend time in, be it for repairs, eating or slumber. When he wasn't being chased or chasing Depth Charge or being tortured or healing himself- he found he quite enjoyed the variety of sealife this organic planet had to offer. Due to his size though, he found that one or two smaller creatures weren't much of a meal to sustain him- of course Energon would be preferable, but there was already only so much to go around, and his healing did require energy of some form. On his way back from his most recent encounter with Depth Charge Rampage had come across a cast of crabs, who were also likely hunting for their next meals and such. Upon seeing his much larger form, they drew nearer, climbing upon themselves and surrounding the mech- Rampage could detect traces of warmth and companionship among their little bodies as they seemed to accept him easily amongst their ranks.
At first Rampage had thought they'd make for a tasty meal- but he found that the familial sense they offered him a different, delectable meal of its own- so the much larger crustacean spent only a few moments allowing the small creatures to climb all over him, before he slowly continued through their midst. Perhaps a less complicated meal was elsewhere, the experiment decided as he waited for the wildlife to clear his path before he continued on.
Not much further away there was a colony of shrimp anyways- while Rampage hadn't devoured all of them, he'd taken at least a sizeable chunk; the damage Depth Charge had caused his chest molded over itself until not a trace of it was left. This prompted a sigh from the mutant, folding a servo over where the hole had been- fleetingly he could still very faintly taste Depth Charges' agony from it before it vanished, leaving him
 unsatisfied.
What was that taste from before? Rampage returned to his spot of choice- he'd burrowed a few holes amongst some large rocks, formations larger than himself- he'd found the sand was soft and it was hard to spot him underneath any of the stones. Once in his favorite sleeping spot he sat, chewing over the remains of the last shrimp he'd had, mentally replaying the last things he'd and Depth Charge had said and done.
The manta had swept himself from the water, cascading into the air before rejoining the blue so easily, so naturally
Rampage hadn't ever been allowed to aquire a taste for art, but he felt as though Depth Charge had almost personified the concept. A smile crept across his faceplate as he thought back to how Depth Charge had actually listened to his desire to see the move performed again, though no doubt the mantas' goal had been to punch another hole in him. Still, Rampage thought fondly of how not only Depth Charge had replicated the movement, but after he hadn't recieved the reaction he wanted, the Maximal chose to strike up a small conversation instead, as obviously frustrated as he was. Which in itself was
cute. There was that word again, one Rampage was even less accustomed with than any form of art- but that was still the only word Rampage could assign the other mech, both his swimming maneuvers and his indignance, and how he'd left in a huff.
That was it, Rampage hypothesized- that was his next meal. As hungry as each of their battles left him, Rampage decided that the flavor profile their last meeting had left him with was too different than their usual, and he wanted more. Of course, he knew that Depth Charge wasn't going to be happy with this decision, but that only made the crabs' smile widen as he shifted back into beast mode, beginning to tread back towards the spot they had both been in last. Not only did he think Depth Charges' frustation was intriguing, but that was a tasty snack on its own which already made journeying back worth it- but the promise of more of the sweet flavor Depth Charge had left behind spurred him on, his claws clicking in excitement at the thought.
Now
where was he? Within the hour Rampage was at the location he had last seen Depth Charge in
which meant the only thing to do was to risk heading into Maximal waters in search of the blue mech. Not that Rampage was afraid of any of them, of course- and all the Maximals were clearly not big fans of the water, if their significant absence from the body was anything to go by. Rumbling on, Rampage turned to follow the direction he'd seen Depth Charge head off into, while also taking his time to observe the slightly different surroundings and formations. Here there was a presence of reefs and corals which were decorated with bright colors and schools of different fish, which were also pleasantly pigmented- he snatched a few urchins and sea stars to munch on while he was taking in the sights. Protoform X didn't make it much further before he heard the click of a weapon and feel cold steel pressing into the side of his faceplate. "It's poor manners to interrupt someone while they're eating."
"It's also poor manners to encroach on enemy territory and take the lives of more innocents." Clearly, Depth Charge didn't take too kindly to Rampages' snacking, as a blue servo smacked the lone sea star Rampage had clutched in his claw. A sigh hefted from Rampage as he watched the star drift away from him, noting the ever present taste of distain that the Maximal practically radiated; Rampage wasn't interested in the usual variety of spite and hatred Depth Charge normally offered him. "what are you doing here? Have you finally decided you're sick of your miserable existence?" As Rampage shifted from crab to mech again, the gun hardly left his faceplate, something Rampage found endearing in its own way.
"My existence was only miserable without my dearest playmate." Rampage gripped the end of the Maximals' blaster, turning it away from the both of them as he looked to red optics, wondering how he could goad more of that taste from the manta.
"Then it'll be my pleasure to be the cause of your misery as I send you back to the pit." Straining, Depth Charge attempted to wrench his weapon back from Predacon grasp, though Rampages' size and strength made this a difficult endeavor. "Now let. Go."
"My friend
don't you ever tire of this song and dance? Haven't you any other ambitions?" Rampage mused aloud mostly to himself, but red optics flared bright before the manta unsheathed his blade, replacing where Depth Charges' blaster had been. Tsk.
"You crushed any and all ambitions I ever had." Depth Charge didn't seem to be in the mood to converse anymore as he began to delve into Rampages neck with the accompanying blade, causing the crab to writhe momentarily before he turned and pushed the ray away.
"Now now, lets not be hasty. Haven't we fought enough today?" Rampage frowned as the foul mood and taste only clouded over Depth Charge more, which was decidedly not the peasant notes from before. "Although- I certainly am flattered you decided you didn't have enough of me earlier, and needed more."
Depth Charges' optics flashed a brighter red so quickly Rampage barely caught it, as the ex security officer seemed to hesitate, his blade straying for the briefest of moments. Rampage seized the opportunity to get closer, along with replacing his grip around Depth Charges' hand that was around his blade.
"I said let go of me!"
"Now why would I do that?" If Rampage paid attention, Depth Charges' voice and hand wavered only slightly, most likely with anger and disbelief. "Here I was, having a snack before my favorite Maximal decided to join me. Come, theres' plenty to eat, we needn't fight." with a sweep of his arm Rampage motioned towards the various forms of organic life passing them by, none of which caring about the strife taking place between the mechs.
"I'm not like you. I especially don't spend my time causing more death and pain." Depth Charge mumbled before he made moves to take his arm back, tugging on it fiercely before Rampage relented, allowing the manta to put more distance between them. "What do you want? You haven't engaged me all day." Now that there were at least a few steps between them Depth Charge pointed his blaster at the Predacon again, keeping his blade at the ready in his other servo. Despite himself and being within point blank range, Rampage grinned, enjoying the presence of the mantas' frustration, and at the potential of diffusing the situation, if only a little.
"Ah, you've noticed. What then, friend? Are you going to attack and attempt to snuff my spark out without a struggle?" So easily, Rampage wanted to taunt, but he knew better than to provoke the blue mech, seeing as how both the blade and blaster were still present in their conversation.
This seemed to strike a chord with the Maximal as he grew quiet, Rampage was practically able to see the gears turn in the others' head before Depth Charge exhaled slowly, either of his arms slackening along with his gaze, looking both defeated and perhaps a bit disappointed. "
No. I'm not like you, killing the defenseless." Red optics blazed in Protoform Xs' direction again, as Depth Charge sheathed his sword and hilted his blaster, drifting further from Rampage as he disarmed. "Besides, that would be too easy
for you." Surely also too good for him, Rampage imagined the other would say and think, though Depth Charge said nothing, as he turned, shifting back into beast mode as he began to swim away.
Likewise, Rampage shifted into beast mode and began to trail after Depth Charge. Not so quickly as to be occupying the same floor of the ocean as the other, but enough that Depth Charge wouldn't be able to easily dart off and disappear, which was more of a task the Rampage had considered. Predictably, Depth Charge could hear the treads grinding along after him, and no doubt his sensors were braying at how closely Rampage was located to the Maximal. Something like a grumble left the blue mechs' voicebox before he swiftly spun around and ducked down towards Rampage, hovering a foot away from the mutants' faceplate. "Now what is it. I'm leaving, so you're free to decimate the local wildlife. You don't need to follow me."
With the eloquence of a child, Rampage flattened slightly, attempting to appear slightly smaller, glancing away from Depth Charge as though he'd been found with his claws in the proverbial cookie jar. "I'm not hungry for them right now." Rampage fibbed, if only a small one.
If Depth Charge currently had limbs, he'd probably have his faceplate in his servos; for a moment Rampage could see that Depth Charge seemed to flounder, incoherent noises leaving the mantas voicebox before he huffed, turning and practically smacking Rampage with his tail, thankfully without the stinger. "Whatever. Stay away from me."
Something like a high pitched keen left the crab, mandibles and claws clicking as Depth Charge resumed swimming; this time, the experiment took care to allow Depth Charge more distance before he spun his treads up again, following from a measured distance, hoping he didn't look as excited as he felt.
-----
It's not intentional I swear, but I think (at least for me) Rampages' dialogue with Depth Charge is just
flirting. But Rampage doesn't know how to flirt
 yet.
anyways ideas for fluff welcomed~

Planetary Exploration Journal: Ophelia
Tumblr media
Name: Ophelia (oh-Fee-lee-uh, with the stress on the second syllable "fee")
Description: Ophelia is a planet located in the Arcturus System. The planet is a rocky, terrestrial planet with a diameter of approximately 9,000 kilometers, making it slightly smaller than Earth. It has a dense atmosphere of carbon dioxide and a surface covered in vast oceans of liquid methane. The planet has one particularly small moon.
Geography: Ophelia's surface is characterized by a diverse array of landscapes, including vast deserts, rocky canyons, and towering mountains. The planet also has large polar ice caps, as well as numerous lakes and rivers. Ophelia's geography is heavily influenced by its unique climate, which is a result of its distance from Arcturus and its position in the Arcturus System.
Civilization: Ophelia is home to a highly intelligent civilization of humanoid beings known as the Ophie. They are a slightly paranoid and tight-knit society that takes comfort in making smaller community packs that work and live closely together. The Ophie have a strong cultural tradition of resourcefulness, cooperation, and self-sufficiency. Their society may be structured around sustainability, with a focus on preserving resources for future generations.
Unique Features: Ophelia's dense atmosphere makes for strange weather patterns, such as slow winds. The planet's rocky terrain and lack of large bodies of drinkable water make agriculture a significant challenge. Ophelia also has unique mineral resources and geological formations that make it a valuable location, leading to competition for resources and strategic positioning of settlements or outposts.
Challenges: Ophelia's dense atmosphere of carbon dioxide makes it difficult for humans to breathe without specialized equipment. The lack of drinkable water also makes prolonged stay on Ophelia's surface complicated for most living individuals.
List of Currently Known Illnesses and Diseases;
Crustacean Plague (Crustaplaga ophelian, CO): A viral infection that can be contracted from the native crustacean species of Ophelia. The virus attacks the respiratory system, causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia or even respiratory failure.
Ocean Mite Fever (Oceamitidae feveria, OF): A bacterial infection that is transmitted by the small, spider-like creatures that inhabit Ophelia's volcanic regions. Symptoms include fever, joint pain, and a distinctive rash that spreads over the body.
Gold Dust Pneumonia (Aurumdustus pneumoniae, AP): A respiratory illness caused by the inhalation of fine particles of red dust that are kicked up by Ophelia's frequent dust storms. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
Thornbush Rash (Spinasilvae dermatitis, SD): An allergic reaction to the spiky, thorn-covered bushes that grow in abundance on Ophelia's rocky terrain. The rash is characterized by intense itching, swelling, and redness of the skin.
Void Flu (Vacuusinfluenza ophelia, VO): A highly contagious viral infection that is transmitted through the air or by contact with contaminated surfaces. It causes fever, chills, fatigue, and muscle aches, and can lead to complications such as pneumonia or dehydration.
Overall Conclusion;
Ophelia is a challenging but intriguing planet with a unique set of geological and climatic features. Its diverse landscapes and potential for scientific discovery make it a valuable target for space exploration and research. However, the planet's harsh environment and lack of resources also make it difficult to colonize or establish a permanent human presence.

Smithsonian Institute overview of ocean acidification: more detailed info than what’s in this post
Rate of ocean acidification, paper by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change): the pdf is very long, but the statistics I pulled were from the executive summary portion.
Information on marine sulfur emissions and their impact on climate: (the original study is published on Nature but most of it is behind a paywall :|)
For whatever reason, I can’t find any detailed information on the experiment with sea butterfly shells besides what I’ve included here. The pictures of the shells are by David Liittschwager/National Geographic and can be found here and context for the experiment is here
Links for more information: NOAA article 1, article 2, Smithsonian article on sea butterflies and the different effects that ocean acidification may have on different species, and National Geographic articles
Notes:
I mentioned extra dissolved CO2 levels benefiting many* marine plants, who can use the extra carbon dioxide in photosynthesis to grow more. This is true; however many marine plants are facing other stressors like pollution that acidification/extra CO2 may not make up for.
*many: some algae (primitive plants) that use carbonate ions are projected to severely decline if ocean acidity increases due to the loss of carbonate. There are always exceptions of generalizations.
I also mentioned shelled creatures being negatively impacted. This is going to be the case for mollusks like oysters, mussels, clams, sea urchins, starfish (which use carbonate as well), and corals. HOWEVER, most** crustaceans (lobsters, crabs etc) are projected to benefit because their shells are constructed differently and they can do better in more acidic water.
most**: there is a study on injuries of Dungeness crab larvae due to slightly higher acidity in oceans, which found that they might have higher mortality due to wonky shell formation from raised acidity in the water. Caveat to the study: more research is needed to confirm the findings and find out if they will impact the population in any way.
Additionally, because everything in an ecosystem is interconnected, it’s really highly unlikely that some species will ONLY benefit from ocean acidification.
For example: blue crabs (a crustacean) eat clams and mussels. Clams and mussel populations will decrease because of acidification. Although crabs may construct stronger shells in more acidic waters, if they don’t have any food to eat (less clams and mussels), the crabs won’t do well either.
If this wasn’t clear, ocean acidification should be mitigated the same way you would reduce climate change: by reducing CO2 emissions.
On an individual basis this means you try to: not waste energy (heat, electricity), use public transport when possible, eating local food, etc. all the things that you probably hear a lot regarding climate change.
HOWEVER MUCH OF THE WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE BY INDUSTRIES, CORPORATIONS, AND LEGISLATION TO REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS.
also education helps a lot. please spread the word about this; many people have heard of climate change, but very few have heard of ocean acidification and it threatens just as much of life on Earth.
Reblogs are greatly appreciated!!!
Earth Day post: 2/?
Transcript for images below:
One lesser known effect of high carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is ocean acidification, which has major impacts on both marine ecosystems and human livelihoods.
CO2 from the atmosphere naturally dissolves into oceans and bodies of water. There, chemical reactions occur which release hydrogen ions (H+), increase ocean acidity, and decrease carbonate ions (CO2-3).
However, humans are producing too much CO2, far faster than the ocean can handle. Each year, oceans absorb 30% of extra, human produced CO2, so any increase in CO2 levels means a drastic increase in ocean acidity.
Over the last 200 years, ocean water has become 30% more acidic. This is the fastest change in ocean chemistry in at least the last 65 million years.  Source: The Ocean, published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2014
Marine life cannot adapt to changes this quickly, and although decreasing acidity will affect species differently, most (if not all) species will struggle with the change.
So, what are the tangible effects?
More H+ ions make the ocean more acidic, which:
may increase the rate of atmospheric warming.
Increasing acidity decreases the amount of sulfur the ocean emits.
Atmospheric sulfur can cause a cooling effect by reducing the solar energy that reaches Earth
Less carbonate ions negatively impact mollusks and shellfish.
Animals like oysters, other shellfish, and corals use carbonate ions to build and maintain their shells/skeletons. Less carbonate can disrupt the growth of these species and may decrease their numbers.
The ocean’s increasing acidity can also dissolve calcium carbonate shells and skeletons. Following are 4 pictures of a shell that looks similar to a snail shell; the shell is from a sea butterfly, a snail relative, and the pictures document the shell gradually dissolving over a period of 45 days after being placed in a solution that models acidity and carbonate levels projected for 2100. The first picture shows the shell at day 0; it is clear, uniformly transparent, and shiny. The second picture shows the shell at day 15; the shell is now opaque and milky white. It still has the same shape as it was in the beginning. The third picture shows the shell at day 30; it is more transparent, but some parts have begun to deform and the opacity of the shell is no longer uniform. The fourth picture shows the shell at day 45; it is more deformed, and some parts have begun to disappear.
In short, acidification results in:
Less tourism for certain areas (e.g. Great Barrier Reef) as corals suffer
Fishing industry losses, as shellfish species may grow more slowly, be smaller in size, and have higher mortality rates
Higher seafood prices
Large ecosystem shifts everywhere
One positive: increased CO2 levels will benefit most seaweeds, algae, and undersea plants, which use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. However, ocean acidification is negative overall. It’s often called the twin sister of climate change.
How to reduce acidification:
Decrease CO2 emissions
This is not just a 1-person initiative. Industries and governments need to play their part.
Additionally, educate others about this issue!
As more people become aware of ocean acidification, we can create greater change.
End transcript.

The Heat Blob: Disrupting Ocean Food Chains
By Sarah Levy, a Fish and Wildlife Service public affairs officer in Portland, OR.
Tumblr media
The heat blob. It brings to mind the horror movie, “The Blob,” or a large wildfire seen from space. The heat blob evokes an image of a hot, angry, foaming bubble that slowly and methodically wrecks everything in its path.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it is.
The heat blob, or simply, “the blob” as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) calls it, is a relatively new oceanic heat wave taking over the continental shelves around the North American and Asian continents. Scientists first observed a heat blob in 2014, when it disrupted marine ecosystems off of the West Coast of the United States, and depressed salmon returns. In 2019, the blob returned.
“There are serious disruptions to the food chain going on right now due to ocean warming and other changes,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seabird coordinator Roberta Swift said. “These Pacific-wide changes affect seabirds throughout their entire Pacific Range. This could affect the quantity or quality food available for seabirds in the Pacific, meaning seabirds might skip breeding, abandon their nests, or die of starvation.”
The changes start at the bottom of the food chain, and disrupt predator-prey relationships all the way to the top. Here’s one example: Warmer water conditions encourage warm water zooplankton to proliferate in areas formerly dominated by cold-water species. Warm water zooplankton have a lower lipid (fat) content than cold-water plankton. For the fish that rely on the cold-water plankton, the warm water zooplankton simply are not as nutritious. The forage fish that eat the warm water zooplankton do not grow as big, which then results in fewer calories and less energy for their predators, including seabirds. That, in turn, can result in starvation and death.
In 2019, thousands of migratory short-tailed shearwaters died off the coast of Alaska. Shearwaters spend their summers (our winter) and breed in South America, and then fly up the coast during their winter (our summer). Because of their high metabolic rate, they rely on huge numbers of krill, small fish, or squid. If there are fewer numbers of these krill or fish, or they have a lower value nutritional content, it could lead to a significant die-off. In previous years, die-offs affected common murres, tufted puffins, and Cassin’s auklets, each in turn.
Tumblr media
“Ocean warming events most affect colder oceans in this way,” Swift said. “Warming events can alter ocean circulation patterns and affect forage fish distributions which may require seabirds to fly farther for their meals, making feeding themselves and their young much more difficult and energy expensive.”
Another way that that human activities affect the marine food change is through input of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Excess carbon dioxide causes ocean acidification, which is the absorption of carbon dioxide into seawater. According to NOAA, a series of chemical reactions result in an increased concentration of hydrogen ions and a decrease in carbonate ions.
Carbonate ions are essential building blocks of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is critical in the formation of the exoskeletons of crustaceans that make up the zooplankton, fundamental components of the oceanic food chain. Many seabirds eat the larval stages of fish and invertebrates, but shells and exoskeletons cannot develop normally in an acidified ocean with increasingly acidic conditions.  We will all have less seafood to eat if larval crustaceans can’t develop into adults.
Tumblr media
According to NOAA, shifts in the marine food web during the evolution of the 2014-2015 marine heatwave called, "the Blob," forced sea lion mothers to forage further from their rookeries in the Channel Islands off Southern California. Hungry pups set out on their own, but many became stranded on area beaches. Picture courtesy of NOAA
Many communities around the world are dependent on shellfish and fish higher up the food chain for food and exports. These days, shellfish farmers must pay special attention to the acidity of the water that bathes larval oysters in order to ensure their development into the adult oysters we eat. The changes affecting tiny organisms in our oceans right now are leading to big changes for fish, birds, and people.
Although getting rid of heat blobs and ocean acidification might seem daunting, some of the little things you can do can help. Reduce your energy footprint. Recycle your waste. Try to be mindful of your consumption. Most of all, treat your oceans and your planet with respect. All the little things (and big things!) count.
Below are some more resources to learn about the blob and ocean warming.

Despite sharing a similar common name, the Gnarled Gorgon is not a creature that is related to the snake-like gorgons. Rather it is a different species from a completely different branch of animal life that has only been compared to each other due to their appearance, reputation and supposed "powers." To further add to their "monstrous" nature, the Gnarled Gorgons live in one of harshest environments you can find: alkaline lakes. For those who are not aware, alkaline lakes are bodies of water that boast high levels of salt and alkaline to the point where they have become toxic. The water is caustic to the touch and, in some regions, boiling hot. This is caused by hot springs feeding into the lake, making the water body like a witch's cauldron. To many creatures, these lakes are dangerous and deadly. That goes for people like you and me! Best not to take a dip in a place like this! Now while many folk have labeled such habitats as places of death, this is not true. Yes, we would find such a land inhospitable, but many specialized species have found a way to call these caustic waters home. In fact, some may argue that these toxic lakes potentially host more life than regular ones! Many birds, insects, crustaceans, fish and other animals reap the benefits that come from such a land, and the Gnarled Gorgon is one of them. Unless you have seen a preserved specimen in a museum or collection, the Gnarled Gorgon is a hard creature to interpret. When viewed in the wild, they appear as twisted piles of roots and branches that are half submerged in the toxic waters (for good reason). Even if you were to watch it in action, you would still have a hard time making out head from tail. In reality, Gnarled Gorgons are large worm-like creatures, with most of their lower bodies long, limbless and prehensile. Near their heads is where things get crazy, as rings of branching tendrils erupt from their bodies, all surrounding a cage-like orifice that serves as their eye. These tentacles are extremely long and branch into multiple twisted appendages. They bear a resemblance to roots, and each part of them is prehensile and strong. In the center of this mess is their "eye," which bears a protective covering that looks much like a cage. Behind this are multiple glowing eyes that peer from far back. Set below this orifice are two smaller tendrils that are tipped with piercing fangs. These limbs are often missed in the tangle of tentacles, but they serve as its mouth. Though fang-like, they are actually proboscises that jab into prey and drain them of fluids. With no chewing mouthparts, they rely solely on a liquid diet and will discard the carcass when dry. Along their serpentine body are dozens of knobby growths that emerge from their back. These are not limbs, but merely bony protrusions that help disguise its body as it rests in the boiling waters.         Since I mentioned that they appear as tangles of roots and branches in the water, you probably already guessed that this species hunts their prey through ambush. This is correct, as they prefer the "sit-and-wait" style of hunting! Immune to the toxic waters, they spend most of their lives wallowing in the shallows, where their gnarled heads poke from the surface and their lower halves hide in the murky fluid. By coiling up their facial tendrils and sitting perfectly still, they look like piles of dead vegetation that are sitting in the lake. When prey approaches, they shall burst forward and swarm them with dozens of wrapping limbs. Prey is snared and constricted, while the dual proboscises get to work. A paralytic venom helps stop the thrashing of the victim while the gorgon feeds, and they will soon perish from blood loss. When its meal is done, the body is tossed away and the Gnarled Gorgon will put some distance between itself and the corpse. You don't want to give away your position by sitting around a floating pile of bodies! Now I can already imagine that this sounds horrifying to many people. No doubt there are folks out there who are now swearing never to go near one of these accursed lakes. Before you cancel your travel plans, though, let me tell you that Gnarled Gorgons are not as dangerous as people make them out to be. While the stories and tales beef them up as monstrous and ruthless beasts, these creatures are actually not that big of a threat. An important thing to note about this species is that the main staple of their diet is birds. They feed primarily upon these feathery fliers and will rarely go after anything bigger. One of the reasons they disguise themselves as twisted vegetation is because most birds are not immune to the toxic waters (save for the local phoenixes and other like species). With the plethora of insects and crustaceans that live in these waters though, many avian species do not wish to miss out on such a buffet. So when they wish to feed at the lakes, they will often rest on the shores and structures that protrude from the water. When one of these birds alights on the limb of a gorgon, it shall snare them in its grip and dine. Other possible food sources are fish and small crustaceans, who are caught when they seek shelter in its limbs. In very few cases will the Gnarled Gorgon go after big prey.  Creatures like Stilted Sifters are much too big and bulky to take down, and they prefer to flee from anything that is bigger than an average human. Now that is not to say that Gnarled Gorgons haven't fed on people or like creatures before. I am sure a freak accident happened before where a human became lunch, but it is incredibly rare (mainly because it relies on some person rowing up to one of these creatures and shoving their head right into its tentacles. Unlikely but sadly not impossible). I mean think of how many people have been killed by cows, and every farmer still raises entire herds of them without a care.
In terms of reproduction, Gnarled Gorgons are hermaphroditic. During the breeding season, they shall seek out nearby mates and undergo a ceremony that involves a lot of writhing and wrapping. Both shall carry eggs and they will seek out structures that stick out of the caustic waters. The eggs are laid upon these dry spots and the gorgon shall rest besides them. This is to help protect the eggs from predators, but also to catch some extra food when birds inevitably arrive to feed upon the squishy orbs. When the young hatch, they shall drop into the water and live out their larval stage as aquatic swimmers. Many of these tiny critters are eaten by fish and crustaceans, but a few will survive long enough to grow big and strong like their parents. As I pointed out during my section about their diet, Gnarled Gorgons are creatures that people often fear and spin terrible legends about. Their appearance is indeed off putting, and the place they call home adds to their demonic image. You will definitely find tales, songs and paintings that show a writhing monstrous beasts emerging from clouds of steam and waves of acid (though its alkaline, not acid, but that doesn't sound as cool). I am sure this species has inspired quite a few prophecies and tales of doom with an image like that. Their "gorgon" name adds to the terror, as everyone knows the stories about the snake-haired creatures that turn men to stone. With a serpent-like lower body and a head made of wriggling growths, they clearly give folk that impression. To further solidify this belief is the idea that Gnarled Gorgons "petrify" their prey. If you ever visit an alkaline lake that sports this species, you may find peculiar carcasses washed up on the shores. The bodies of birds, bats and other critters will be gray and frozen, as if their flesh had turned to stone. They shall be desiccated and perfectly preserved as if they were statues. People say that this is what happens to those who the gorgon feeds on, as it grabs them and exposes them to its alien eyes. While the gaze of this gorgon doesn't turn people to stone, they are in fact the cause of these corpses. When the gorgon feeds, it fills them with venom and sucks them dry. The body is then discarded into the water, right into a soup of salt and chemicals. With the high salinity, these bodies become encrusted and the presence of venom in their dried bodies causes a strange reaction. What results is the formation of a strange crust that petrifies the body, giving the frozen appearance. At first it will be a muddle of murky colors, but when washed ashore, the crust will be bleached by the sun. The result is the famous stony appearance that captures the last moments of life for these deceased creatures. Their presence on the shores have given rise to the legends of the Gnarled Gorgons, and they have also become morbid pieces that collectors quite enjoy. In the end, though, these carcasses are only a result of it eating, which shouldn't be vilified or despised. We all have to eat sometime! And of course there are words about people perishing to these Gnarled Gorgons, but most of these are actually accidental. In most cases, someone will row out into the toxic lake for fishing or travel and wind up running into a hiding gorgon. When they get close, the creature will panic and flee, which causes quite the ruckus and frenzy. The writhing limbs and violent movements often terrify the boater and cause them to tip during their panic. At that point, the toxic water will do them in, as it eats away at skin and poisons their insides. Even if they get back into the boat quickly, they must return to shore for medical attention before it is too late. Sadly, most victims arrive in unsalvageable conditions and they will soon perish. Their deaths mixed with the appearance of a struggle from afar makes many blame the gorgon for their demise. This is quite unfortunate to all involved, but people must understand that accidents do happen. Thankfully, the toxic habitat of the Gnarled Gorgon prevents their species from seeing much of a comeuppance, as many are not eager to wade into boiling waters for vengeance.   Chlora Myron Dryad Natural Historian     -------------------------------------------------------- Here is a gorgon creature that I made for this fantasy world as a sort of apology for my blander looking gorgons. I wanted to go crazy and monstrous with this one. This design was inspired by the medusa from The Medusa vs. the Son of Hercules, which is by far one of the best interpretations of the monster I have ever seen. The other inspiration behind this creature are the photos of animal carcasses that have washed up from alkaline lakes (specifically Natron). Due to the pictures being taken in black and white, the corpses appear stone-like and petrified, which I thought was perfect for the gorgon myth.

Bioluminescence is a process in which living organisms convert chemical energy into light. The light results from the oxidation of an organic substrate, a luciferin, catalyzed by an enzyme called a luciferase & presence of oxygen and adenosine triphosphate promote theoxidation of luciferin. In nature, there is an amazing diversity of organisms that emit light including bacteria, fungi, crustaceans, mollusks, fishes and insects. While the specific biochemistries of bioluminescence are diverse, all include an enzyme-mediated reaction between molecular oxygen and an organic substrate. It is likely too that all bioluminescence processes involve the formation and breakdown of a four-member ring peroxide or a linear hydroperoxide. . . . #animal_worldwide #organisms #fauna #insect #mechanism #bioluminescence #phenomenon #biochem #entomology #forestry #biodiversity #nature #naturalphotography #naturalbeauty #animelove #agventure007 #insta #instadaily #icarjrf #net #srf #ars (at Entomology Research Institute - ERI, Loyola College, Chennai) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFFDG1YH0yB/?igshid=1ahxrr6m4q2mm

Murad Rapid Age Spot And Pigment Lightening Serum
Tumblr media
Price: $65
Claims: Fast-acting treatment featuring Hydroquinone fades dark spots, age spots, and freckles. Our skin-lightening serum also evens out skin tone to reveal a clearer, brighter complexion while helping prevent future pigment formation.
Our Hydroquinone serum is suggested for people looking to:
Fade age spots
Lighten dark spots
Even skin tone
Obtain smoother skin
Patented formula combines the most powerful skin lightening ingredient at the highest level available without a prescription with a targeted skin-brightening blend to correct unwanted discoloration and protect against future damage.
Ingredients:
Hydroquinone: A controversial skin whitening agent added to many topical brightening creams. Hydroquinone decreases the formation of melanin, the pigment that gives skin a brown or olive color. It's used topically to lighten areas of darkened skin such as freckles, age spots, chloasma, and melasma. It should not be used on any skin that is dry or damaged (including wind chapped, sunburnt, or irritated) and can actually make skin more sensitive to UV exposure. It should not be applied before going into the sun or after sun exposure.
Water: Primarily used as a solvent in cosmetics and personal care products in which it dissolves many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits, such as conditioning agents and cleansing agents.
Alcohol Denat: Helps visibly tighten pores and control excess oil. It acts as an anti-foaming agent, astringent, antimicrobial agent, and a solvent. It also helps deliver the active ingredients of a product. Almost every type of skincare product lists it as an ingredient, particularly those specifically designed to treat acne.
Glycolic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used to help maintain natural pH levels and gently exfoliate surface skin cells.
Butylene Glycol: Commonly-used ingredient that has multiple functions in cosmetics, including as a texture enhancer. It’s similar to propylene glycol, but has a lighter texture.
Glycerin: A naturally occurring ingredient (also synthetically made) that balances the water levels in skin to facilitate moisture. Helps to retain water to lock in moisture.
Methyl Gluceth-10: Very effective humectant & emollient. Enhances spreadability of products and helps prevent water-loss from the skin. Can significantly reduce skin irritation associated with any anionic and amphoteric surfactants. Excellent emollient properties providing a smooth & gentle skin feel. Has also thickening & emulsifying properties.
Dextran: Polysaccharide that has water-binding properties for skin.
Hexapeptide-2: Has lightening properties but it does double duty by helping to prevent future damage by stopping pigment formation.
Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera)  Leaf Juice: Extracted from the leaves of the aloe plant; used as a skin softener, anti-irritant, and moisture replenisher.
Urea: Used for water binding and moisturizing properties.
Yeast Amino Acids: Antioxidant, Moisturizing and Soothing.
Trehalose: A moisture-binding sugar molecule that helps plants survive long periods without water; used to protect skin against moisture loss.
Inositol: A nutrient in the Vitamin B complex plays an important part in the health of cell membranes, regulates the contents of the cells, making effective functioning possible.
Taurine: Helps to maintain skin hydration.
Betaine: Contains a moisturizing amino acid derived from beets.
Zinc Gluconate: A biocide or deodorant agent, possible acne treatment. Also thought to speed wound healing and prevent scarring by assisting the body in processing essential fatty acids used by the skin for healing.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): A powerful antioxidant with many anti-aging benefits such as building collagen, defending the skin against free-radicals, healing inflammation, reducing the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles, and lightening discolorations. A relatively new derivative of Vitamin C, it’s preferred by many for having superior stability and effectiveness. It’s particularly lauded for reducing melanin production- the culprit behind age spots, Melasma and hyper-pigmentation. It’s also been shown to be more effective than water soluble Vitamin E in protecting against hydroxyl free radicals.
Chitosan: The ascorbic acid (vitamin C) salt of chitosan- a polysaccharide derived from the outer skeleton of crustaceans. Primarily functions as an antioxidant, skin conditioner and film-forming agent. As a stabilized form of Vitamin C, it offers the anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties of ascorbic acid.
Propyl Gallate: A preservative. Added to food and skin care products containing oils and fats to prevent oxidation. If oxidation occurs, it can result in rancidity, color changes, viscosity changes and deterioration of active ingredients in formulas, negating their effectiveness.
Lecithin: An emulsifying agent that penetrates the skin.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E): Used as an antioxidant and skin conditioner.
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate: Form of vitamin C that is considered stable and is an effective antioxidant for skin. Increases skin’s hydration levels as well as being effective for calming‹
Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate (Licorice): Used as a whitener, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and moisturizer. Helps control oil production, and helps calm and soothe acne-prone skin. It can be used to reduce dark age spots and whiten skin.
Palmitoyl Hydroxypropyltrimonium Amylopectin/Glycerin Crosspolymer: It is noted as an emollient and skin conditioning agent, used to act as a lubricant on the skin's surface and give the skin a soft and smooth appearance.
Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract: An antioxidant that helps fight damaging free radicals that can cause premature signs of aging.
Allantoin: Highly regarded for its skin soothing, healing and keratolytic (ability to remove excess skin) properties. It helps shed the outer layer of the epidermis and promotes healthy tissue formation. It also softens the skin and enables it to absorb more moisture. It’s particularly effective at treating wounds, burns, skin ulcers, eczema, and any other abrasion in the skin.
Polyquaternium-10: Conditioning, moisturizing, anti-static agent. A water soluble, white granulated powder. It is also considered a film former, supplying a sheen and coating to hair strands by easily being absorbed by proteins.
Sodium Metabisulfite: An inorganic salt used as a disinfectant and preservative agent. It is also considered a reducing agent that donates hydrogen molecules to other substances. Sometimes function as an antioxidant, preventing or slowing deterioration of formulas caused by chemical reactions with oxygen.
Sodium Sulfite: Reducing agent that alters the structure of hair. It can also be used as a preservative, and can be a skin sensitizer.
Sodium Hydroxide: An inorganic compound used to control the pH levels or serve as a buffering agent. Has the ability to dissolve grease, oils, fats and protein based deposits. Considered a strong irritant.
PPG-26-Buteth-26: An alcohol-based conditioning agent and surfactant. Ability to restore the appearance of dry, damaged skin and hair by reducing flaking and improving suppleness. It is primarily considered an emulsifying agent with conditioning properties, but is also used as a fragrance ingredient and surfactant.
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil: The weight and size of this ingredient is too large to penetrate beyond skin’s surface, but that’s fine—this type of emollient is needed on the surface to stop moisture loss and keep skin feeling soft.
Hydroxyethylcellulose: A plant-derived amino acid used as a preservative, emulsifier, binder and thickener. It’s a water-soluble polymer that provides colloid protection and can be thickened or thinned. It is not beneficial in itself to the skin, but is a widely used ingredient because of its ability to serve many purposes.
Disodium EDTA: Used as a chelating, meaning it prevents ingredients in a formula from binding with trace elements (mainly minerals) that can be present in water.
Limonene: Colorless liquid with a light, fresh, and sweet citrus odor used to make fragrances and flavors. It is naturally occurring substance found in many citrus fruits.
Linalool: Fragrant component of lavender and coriander that can be a potent skin sensitizer. Colorless liquid with a soft, sweet odor.
My Thoughts: Halfway through the Murad Environmental Shield Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturizer I discovered Murad Rapid Age Spot And Pigment Lightening Serum. I really wanted it because Murad products have been doing miracles for my skin. But I really didn’t want to spend that much on a skincare product. When my mom took me took the military store I quickly grabbed it since it was cheaper there because she doesn’t pay taxes.
Murad Rapid Age Spot And Pigment Lightening Serum comes in a clear glass bottle with a pump. I use it once a day normally in the morning before moisturizing. I don’t use this as a spot treatment I just spread it evenly on my face. A little goes a long way I can use 1 pump for my face, 2 pumps for face and neck. 3 pumps is way too much and takes forever to dry. It has a gel like serum that is a little on the sticky side. But once the serum it is fully absorb into the skin its no longer sticky. I did not like the serum smell it reminded me of hand sanitizer.
Even though I didn’t pay for this I am still pissed off that my mom paid so much for something that doesn’t even remotely work for my skin. I was patience with this serum, I tried it with the Murad Environmental Shield Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturizer and I saw no results. I tried it without and still nothing. Murad Rapid Age Spot And Pigment Lightening Serum doesn’t fade age spots, doesn’t lighten dark spots, or even skintone or smooths the skin.
Would I recommend or purchase Murad Rapid Age Spot And Pigment Lightening Serum again, absolutely not, it did nothing for me and extremely expensive.
Pros:
Clear glass bottle with pump
A little goes a long way
Gel like serum
Stickiness does disappear when absorb
Cons:
Too much product can take forever to absorb
Serum is sticky
Smells of hand sanitizer
Expensive
Did not improve my skin in any way listed in claims

The studio petrjanda/brainwork won an international architecture competition for the Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center in the protected area of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. The main idea is to connect the visitor center with the environment of the reserve. Using material and shape mimicry, the building organically connects its appearance with the environment of the reserve.

Text by the Architects
The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center works with the natural connection between the organic and inorganic components of nature, which permeates not only the technical part of the building (cooling and condensation system) but also all exhibition and didactic strategies (living parts of the facades, water elements, and indoor life organisms). The smooth connection of individual operation sections into an intertwined continuous floor plan creates a large number of surprising situations achieving a complex impression and spontaneous transfer of information to visitors in a small area. The building is designed as a visitor center containing elements of a small museum with an emphasis on flamingo nesting, allowing exhibition and program expansion (specifics of live forms influenced by carotenoid, partially live displays forming small biotopes).
Architectural design, spatial configuration
The spatial arrangement of the building is based on an O and S-shape intertwined composition with a circular floor plan, which naturally leads visitors through its folds and gradually opens the individual highlights of the building’s program and its interaction with the reserve. The building deliberately does not work with two-dimensional floor plans. It is more of a celebration of a three-dimensional natural world and its natural elegance. The dynamic curve arrangement and continuous shaping enable barrier-free movement around the building and infinitely diverse modulation of visitors’ perception. Blending of the exterior into a shaded forecourt and interior almost without a structurally articulated interface gives the object its timelessness.
View from a distance while arriving at the building initiates visitors into exploring the object, which, despite its iconic character, seems to merge with the terrain. The facility works with the observer’s imagination using hints of natural phenomena that we have been used to reading since childhood (such as images in the clouds). The building thus refers to its connotations indirectly and subliminally through shape, material, and fragmentary indications. The resulting form is, therefore, not unequivocally geomorphic or zoomorphic. It can be seen as references to the morphology of a sleeping flamingo as well as to rock formations in the Arabian desert with their significant stratification revealed by erosion. The design uses an emphasis on bird’s eye view with regard to the topic associated with flamingos and their migration and flying. The building belongs to a few objects where the view from the air is part of their reading (during the design process, we consulted ornithologists and bird photographers on birds behavior and the possible reaction of birds to the appearance of the building and environmental change, and a landmark with organic shape seems to be beneficial for their orientation).
The building deliberately does not work with two-dimensional floor plans. In fact, it is more of a celebration of a three-dimensional natural world and its natural elegance.
– petrjanda/brainwork architects
Dramaturgy and program content
The strategy of the visitor’s movement is based on the gradual exploration and revealing of the building and its contents (similarly to the entire reserve exploration). The building is not divided into individual rooms, and visitors move through several interconnected sectors that contain all the required functions, and are supplemented by technical and organizational spaces and complements inaccessible to visitors.
From the car park, access to the building leads through the roof, on which there is a lake (pink lake biotope) illuminating through the transparent bottom the main hall of the building below. Using a gradual ramp, visitors descend through a fold between the rotating tubes of the building’s volume to an observation terrace shaded from the sun by a levitating overhang – a tube containing the display area and the main viewpoint of the reserve. The terrace is separated from the reserve by a bay formed by a water element with a saltwater biotope containing microorganisms specific to the reserve. Our proposal sees the exhibition content as more complex and uses the specific reserve environment to outline the methodology in a bigger picture, showing the principles of color changes affected by carotenoid (flamingos, water, crustacean, plants, algae) and other possible topics. The exhibition is conceived as partially live with the plants and aquariums that help to maintain a pleasant climate with different humidity. Proceeding in the exhibition, visitors get to the culminating height point of the exhibition tube, which allows a maximum view of the reserve through a wide panoramic window. Another principle used to separate movement of visitors is a division into a sheltered area of the visitor center (interior and shaded terraces) and move around the reserve and parking area in the open air.
Description of preliminary structural concept and construction method
The building’s structure is an insulated sandwich made of cast and torched colored concrete finished with sandblasting. The used material itself offers a didactic layer regarding the material, its color, texture, and structure, and the live organisms layer, which complements it and participates in cooling.
The technological process of pouring the concrete mixture will be carried out in layers with the resulting effect of a characteristic appearance reminiscent of rock formations in the Arabian desert, emphasizing the layers of the colored pink-red concrete referring to carotenoid color changes in flamingos. The individual layers will be cast up to the height of 40 cm so that the “geological” graining is highlighted. The individual layers will be colored during concreting.
Technology
The design uses an innovative solution for the entire building based on the active use of heat distribution using two layers of coolant distribution (liquid) integrated into the shell of the inner and outer shell of the building, which uses the temperature difference during the day and night. During the day, the indoor circuit is supplied with cooling water, which cools the entire inner shell of the concrete shell of the building and ensures pleasant cooling of the whole interior by indirect evaporative cooling with the effect of natural humidity suitable for the inner plant layer of the exhibition. During the night, the water heated during the day from the internal system is pumped into the outer circuit below the surface of the building shell, where the warmer water is cooled by night cooling air. The condensation on the building’s surface also waters lichens growing on the building surface. Using the smart circulation it significantly reduces the operational costs while keeping a pleasant full surface cooling effect. Combined with controlled air circulation with maximum recovery, it creates a pleasant and environmentally sustainable climate in the building with a significant saving of energy (fully electrified system) with minimal carbon footprint in the environment.

Life organisms concept
The concept of a live building uses plants connected to biotopes that are created directly by individual parts of the building. The surface of the building will be covered with lichens Xanthoria elegant nourished by the night surface condensation on the warm building’s shell. Lichens will visually transform the building over time in color shades the same way the color of flamingo changes depending on the food intake and the carotenoids it contains. The originally pinkish layered concrete will get light red accents highlighting the organic form of the building. The entire indoor exhibition uses a live plant system combining the layers of grasses (Carex buchananii, Miscanthus Sinensis’ FLAMINGO’, etc.), higher reed and climbers, supplemented with lichen layers and local small aquarium biotopes in crater showcases grown into the floor using the method similar to building nests by flamingos. The third layer includes water biotopes located in two different versions of saltwater lakes with high salinity containing Dunaliella salina, Halobacterium cutirubrum in combination with high concentrations of crustaceans, Artemia brine prawn, and other organic cultures. These are located in the visitor’s entrance area, separating it from the nature reserve and on the roof of the building with the transparent bottom, ensuring the distribution of light into the main hall.

What is scabies? How is scabies transmitted?
Scabies is a type of skin disease caused by a mite called sarcoptes scabiei von hominis. The scabies disease that causes itching and rash in the person increases especially in autumn and winter and is highly contagious. The scabies, which occur when sarcoptes scabiei von hominis mite, which is very common worldwide, settle on the upper layer of the skin, cause itching due to the progression of the mite by opening tunnels on the skin. The disease that causes itching more intensely at night brings rash and wound formation when it is not treated. Scabies can be seen in everyone, regardless of personal hygiene. Scabies that spread more easily in public living areas such as nursing homes and military barracks are transmitted from person to person rather than pets such as cats and dogs. Even if mites in pets are passed on to humans, they cannot enter human skin and live on the skin surface for a long time. Therefore, existing irritation may go away on its own in a short time. However, scabies that pass from person to person must be treated. Frequently asked, "How is scabies passed?" before answering the question "What is scabies disease?" It is necessary to answer the question.
What is scabies?
Scabies, which is defined as scabies in the medical language, is an infectious skin disease caused by the mite called sarcoptes scabiei von hominis, known as scabies. 0.3 to 0.5mm. In size, scabies caused by mite, which is unlikely to be seen by the eye, occurs when the mite enters the skin. Flowing through tunnels in the upper layers of the skin, the mite lives for about 4 to 8 weeks. However, during this period, he lays eggs and feces in the tunnels he opened. This condition, which causes a skin reaction, causes severe itching. When untreated, it causes rashes, wounds and different infections on the skin. Mites that reproduce with the eggs they leave can survive for 1 to 2 days outside the human body. Therefore, it is much more likely to spread from person to person in public areas. Tunnels opened by the mite in the upper layers of the skin, the eggs and feces it leaves bring with it an extremely severe itch. The disease, which often causes itching between the fingers, wrists, elbows, feet, navel, and armpits, does not pose a threat to the general health of the person, but rather reduces the quality of life.
How is scabies transmitted?
Scabies is an extremely easily transmitted disease. The incidence of the disease increases in autumn and winter. The source of scabies, which is much more common in places such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes and barracks, is the sarcoptes scabiei von hominis mite, popularly known as scabies. Scabies is also frequently transmitted among family members. The disease can be transmitted by skin contact, as well as common bedding, bed linen, towels and clothing. The reason for this is that the mite can live for 1-2 days outside the human body. Although it is believed that scabies seen in people of all ages and genders are seen in people who do not care about their personal hygiene, this is not true. Scabies is not directly related to personal hygiene. Shaking or cuddling with someone with the disease can also cause scabies to infect a healthy person. When the scab beetle passes to the healthy person, it goes under the skin, opens tunnels and breeds quickly. The first symptoms take about 2 to 6 weeks to appear, but during this period, scabies can be transmitted from person to person. Symptoms may occur earlier in a person who has previously had scabies. Although the disease is likely to be transmitted from animals with scabies to humans, in this case, unlike scabies transmitted from person to person, symptoms appear within 1-3 hours. Scabies mite, which passes from animal to human, cannot enter the skin and die within a short time. Frequently asked "What causes scabies?" The question can be answered in this way. It goes under the skin, opens tunnels here and quickly reproduces. The first symptoms take about 2 to 6 weeks to appear, but during this period, scabies can be transmitted from person to person. Scabies mite, which passes from animal to human, cannot enter the skin and die within a short time. Frequently asked "What causes scabies?" The question can be answered in this way.
What are the symptoms of scabies?
A common, parasitic condition, scabies, often causes itching between the wrist, elbow, armpit, chest, waist, hips, feet and fingers. Itching and lesions can be seen in the nipples in women and in the genital area in men. Itching may also occur in the back of the ear, face, palms and soles of children. Tunnels opened by mites can be seen from the skin surface with the naked eye. Scabies, which causes itching that is severe enough to decrease one's quality of life, may also cause different skin infections due to irritation caused by itching. Therefore, the physician should be consulted in the presence of the following symptoms. Severe itching, especially at night White or gray colored 1-10 mm long lines on the skin surface caused by the mite, especially between the fingers, Itching, which increases with hot bath, Dirt accumulation in the upper part of the tunnels caused by the mite, blackhead-like formations, Liquid-filled lesions resembling pearl on the skin surface, Widespread rash, rash and presence of wounds. https://www.bluewoman.net/what-does-tokalon-sunscreen-do-those-who-use-tokalon-sunscreen/
What is crusted shell scab?
Crusted crusted scabies, commonly known as crustacean scab or Norwegian scabies, occurs in infants, elderly or sick people with a weakened immune system. In addition to scabies, the disease can cause itching in the soles of the feet, hands, palms, neck, head, and face. On the skin surface of the person, thick crusts containing the egg of the scabies mite can be seen. A person with Crusted scabies has about 2 million scabies mites or eggs in his body. Therefore, they are more likely to transmit the disease to other people. People with immune-suppressing neurological disease, Down syndrome, chemotherapy, AIDS patients, as well as the elderly and infants who have not yet fully developed the immune system may experience crusted crusted scabies.
How is scabies diagnosed?
For the diagnosis of scabies, which people of all ages can catch worldwide, the physician takes the patient's anamnesis and then performs a physical examination. Often, although the symptoms caused by scabies mite are sufficient for diagnosis, in some cases, the physician may also request a laboratory test by taking a tissue sample. When a person is diagnosed with scabies, the physician can call family members for control, even if they do not have scabies. The reason for this is that the people who live in the same house have a high risk of transmission of scabies and it takes 2 to 6 weeks for scabies to show their first symptoms after transmission.
How is scabies treated?
After the diagnosis of scabies, the doctor usually organizes a treatment consisting of creams and lotions. These creams and lotions are applied to the entire skin down from the neck at night when the itching intensity increases. When waking up in the morning, one should take a shower. The treatment is repeated this way for about a week. In some cases, the physician may give additional medications to relieve itching and other symptoms, as well as oral medications. It is extremely important to use the drugs as prescribed by the doctor and for the treatment of the disease.
How to protect from scabies?
The most effective way to prevent scabies is to avoid direct skin contact with the person who has scabies. Bed linen, towels and clothes of the person who is infected with scabies should not be used. These products should be washed with at least 50 ° C hot water. Items such as carpet, bed that cannot be washed should be sweeping very well and the bag of the vacuum cleaner should be discarded. Surfaces thought to have scabies mite can be cleaned with bleach and hot water. If one of the family members is diagnosed with scabies, it is recommended that the entire family go to the doctor and go through the necessary health checks. We wish you healthy days. https://www.bluewoman.net/what-does-arnica-cream-do-how-to-use-arnica-cream/ Read the full article

Natural Remedies for ADHD in Children
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/news/natural-remedies-for-adhd-in-children/
Natural Remedies for ADHD in Children
ADHD is a very common diagnosis in children (though adults can have it too) so many families have questions. Luckily there are some things that can help with ADHD symptoms other than medication. Below, I’ve compiled recommendations and advice from experts and previous podcast guests on ways to support a child with ADHD.
What Is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common mental health disorder affecting kids today. It’s thought that ADHD affects boys more than girls, but some experts believe it affects them equally. Girls exhibit symptoms in a different way though and are underdiagnosed because of it.
ADHD is characterized by impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and inattentiveness. Some ADHD children are impulsive and hyperactive, others are inattentive, and others are both.
What used to be called Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is now the version of ADHD that is only inattentive (not hyperactive or impulsive). If you think your child’s behavior may signal ADHD it’s important to get professional help to make a diagnosis and rule out other issues.
ADHD is not something that can be diagnosed by a single test. Instead, it is diagnosed by a qualified professional when a person has exhibited some or all of the associated symptoms for at least six months.
Causes of ADHD
ADHD is a complicated disorder that doesn’t have a single cause. It presents differently in each case and for this reason, a personalized plan is often a beneficial remedy.
Some of the things that can contribute to ADHD are the following:
Genetics: ADHD can run in families. If a parent has ADHD, a child is over 50 percent more likely to also get it. If their sibling has ADHD they are 30 percent more likely to have ADHD too. As we learn more about genetics, some theories are emerging about links to potential mutations that may also increase the risk.
Prenatal health: Issues in pregnancy are associated with a higher risk of ADHD in the child.
Toxin exposure during pregnancy: Another theory is that exposure to things like pesticides, lead, and plastics during pregnancy can increase risk.
Diet: A healthy diet is always important for health put those with certain dietary habits are at higher risk for ADHD. Research shows that risks include high sugar, low nutrient foods, and foods with additives.
Modern education: It’s thought that some cases of ADHD are not physiological but are a symptom of a one-size-fits-all education system. In fact, some experts argue that the best remedy for ADHD would be a change in the education system.
Often it is a combination of these causes and not just one, which is why treatment also varies from child to child. Parents of kids with ADHD often become the primary researchers and advocates, pulling in and testing resources to see what is helpful.
Natural Remedies for ADHD
Many kids with ADHD can develop low self-esteem because of their inability to have self-control or perform in school. Just getting a diagnosis can help with self-esteem issues. But it’s important to also deal with underlying causes and there are ways to address the symptoms of ADHD naturally and support the child.
Here are some things that can help kids with ADHD.
Diet
A real food, nutrient-dense diet is important for overall health. But because many ADHD sufferers also have nutrient deficiencies, it’s especially important to make the diet as nutrient dense as possible. A healthy diet includes:
Quality protein: Grass-fed, pastured, and wild-caught meat, poultry, and fish are healthy sources of protein. Poultry is especially helpful since it contains tryptophan which can help the body produce serotonin.
Healthy fats: Stick with healthy fats from grass-fed and pastured animal products, coconut oil, avocados, real olive oil, etc. Fat helps stabilize blood sugar and improve hormone function.
Lots of fresh vegetables: Veggies are full of nutrients that the body desperately needs to function well. Leafy greens are especially good for B vitamins.
Oily fish: Instead of taking fish oil supplements, you can include oily fish (like salmon and anchovies). Salmon is also a good source of vitamin B6.
Additionally, there are some foods that should be avoided. These include:
Processed foods: Additives may contribute to ADHD symptoms in some kids. Processed foods are also low in nutrients and high in sugar, so should be avoided anyway.
High-sugar foods: This is especially true for processed sugar foods. High sugar in the diet is generally not healthy, but for some kids with ADHD, sugar is a big trigger for symptoms. Research doesn’t clearly point to all sugar being a problem, but does show processed sugar can cause symptoms to worsen.
Food allergens: Studies show a link between food allergies and ADHD. Eliminate the top allergens (dairy, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat) and any other foods you know your child is allergic to.
Many families have found that changing the diet reduces symptoms significantly.
Supplements
While it’s always best to get nutrients from food first, there are times when supplements are useful. When deficiencies are present it’s usually helpful to take a supplement to get levels back to normal. Here are some supplements that experts find may help children with ADHD.
Fish oil: Supports brain function. These essential fatty acids are important for optimal brain functioning. Fish oil supplementation reduces symptoms according to a 2017 study. As a personal note, I suggest caution with fish oil supplementation as there is also current research showing it may be harmful. In our family, we try to get these beneficial fats from fish vs a supplement whenever we can.
B vitamins: Can help with the formation of serotonin. Research published in 2016 shows lower levels of vitamins B2, B6, and folate are connected to a higher chance of ADHD diagnosis. B2 and B6 were associated with severity of symptoms as well. Due to this, there is speculation that certain gene mutations that make it more difficult to utilize B vitamins may also increase the risk. Finding out about this with a test like Nutrition Genome and working with a practitioner can help get levels back into normal range.
Minerals: Magnesium, calcium, and zinc, in particular, are important for relaxing the nervous system. Low levels of these nutrients were found in children diagnosed with ADHD, according to a 2011 study. Personally, I don’t supplement with calcium as many of us get too much. I do supplement daily with K2-7 which increases the bioavailability of calcium in the body, reduces inflammation, and may also be supportive.
GABA: According to a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, children with ADHD tend to have low levels of this important amino acid. GABA is known to calm the nervous system so adding a GABA supplement may be beneficial. With any supplement, but especially amino acids, it is really important to work with a doctor or practitioner who specializes and understands this area.
Probiotics: Preliminary research suggests that ADHD may be an immune reaction and that probiotics can help. Probiotics early in life may also protect against neuropsychiatric disorders later in childhood, as explained in this Nature article. I personally take this probiotic and give it to my kids since it has tested survivability.
Vitamin D: There are receptors for vitamin D throughout the central nervous system and in the hippocampus. Vitamin D is important for activating enzymes in the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid. These enzymes are involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and nerve growth. So vitamin D is really important for brain function! Studies support this, too. Vitamin D supplementation in children with ADHD may help with cognitive function. Note: Since Vitamin D is fat soluble, this is one that should not be taken without blood tests and without the oversight of a doctor or practitioner. Additionally, there is evidence that the vitamin D we get from sun exposure is different and more potentially beneficial than supplemental vitamin D. I write all about it in this post.
Brain “Retraining” Alternative Treatment for ADHD
If you’ve heard of neuroplasticity, you probably know a little about this. The concept is that the brain is capable of learning new ways of functioning. A therapy called Brain Harmony uses an auditory and visual protocol is used to relax the nervous system. Participants are then able to have better outcomes with other therapies.
To learn more about this, check out this podcast episode that touches on specific ways this therapy can help the brain.
Rethink Education and Learning Environment
If it’s true that some cases of ADHD are a symptom of an education system that doesn’t suit all children, then rethinking this education system would be a natural remedy. I’m a big advocate for children getting more movement and time outside, so I’d personally love to see these changes implemented
even for children not diagnosed with ADHD!
According to ADDitude, some of the things that can help with ADHD students include:
extra recess time (recess is also a great time for kids to practice social skills)
shorter lessons with breaks in between
tests given earlier in the day and kept short
using creative projects in place of tests
using standing desks or fidget chairs
offering tactile learning activities (learning spelling with magnet letters, for example)
mixing high energy classes like gym or music between low energy classes like reading or math
no homework
Some families (including ours) decide to homeschool so they can give individualized attention to their children who struggle in a traditional school setting. Another option is finding a private school that utilizes some of the techniques that work for kids with ADHD.
Homeschool or private school aren’t an option for everyone, but public schools are starting to improve. Many now recognize how sitting and doing busy work isn’t beneficial for most children (even non-ADHD kids). An article on Edweek explains that children who are more active show better focus, faster cognitive processing, and more successful memory retention than kids who sit still all day.
You can approach your child’s teacher and see if she can help find solutions. She may have training in ADHD special needs or know another teacher who does and can help. Perhaps she could add a few 5-minute breaks into the day for physical activity to relieve some of the ADHD symptoms.
Support Groups
Local support groups can also help family members and friends of kids dealing with ADHD. Other families who have dealt with ADHD may be able to point you in the right direction for the best doctor or treatments. Two organizations, CHADD and Attention Deficit Disorder Association, sponsor events for networking and education. You can also ask your child’s doctor for recommendations for local support groups.
ADHD Natural Remedies: Bottom Line
ADHD is a complicated disorder that affects many children. But it doesn’t have to disrupt their lives or require medication. There are many natural remedies that can help some children with ADHD. Talk with your child’s doctor to see if these remedies might help.
Does your family have experience with ADHD? What have you done that has been helpful?

 Basic Information of Estradiol
Chemical Name: Estradiol
Cas No.: 50-28-2
Molecular Formula: C18H24O2
Chemical Structure:
Estradiol (E2), also spelled oestradiol, is an estrogen steroid hormone and the major female sex hormone. It is involved in the regulation of the estrous and menstrual female reproductive cycles. Estradiol is responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics such as the breasts, widening of the hips, and a feminine pattern of fat distribution in women and is important in the development and maintenance of female reproductive tissues such as the mammary glands, uterus, and vagina during puberty, adulthood, and pregnancy. It also has important effects in many other tissues including bone, fat, skin, liver, and the brain. Though estradiol levels in men are much lower compared to those in women, estradiol has important roles in men as well. Aside from humans and other mammals, estradiol is also found in most vertebrates and crustaceans, insects, fish, and other animal species.
Estradiol is produced especially within the follicles of the ovaries, but also in other tissues including the testicles, the adrenal glands, fat, liver, the breasts, and the brain. Estradiol is produced in the body from cholesterol through a series of reactions and intermediates. The major pathway involves the formation of androstenedione, which is then converted by aromatase into estrone and is subsequently converted into estradiol. Alternatively, androstenedione can be aromatized into testosterone, which can then be converted into estradiol. Upon menopause in women, production of estrogens by the ovaries stops and estradiol levels decrease to very low levels.
Estradiol acts primarily as an agonist of the estrogen receptor (ER), a nuclear steroid hormone receptor. There are two subtypes of the ER, ERα and ERÎČ, and estradiol potently binds to and activates both of these receptors. The result of ER activation is a modulation of gene transcription and expression in ER-expressing cells, which is the predominant mechanism by which estradiol mediates its biological effects in the body. Estradiol also acts as an agonist of membrane estrogen receptors (mERs), such as GPER (GPR30), a recently discovered non-nuclear receptor for estradiol, via which it can mediate a variety of rapid, non-genomic effects. Unlike the case of the ER, GPER appears to be selective for estradiol, and shows very low affinities for other endogenous estrogens, such as estrone and estriol.[39] Additional mERs besides GPER include ER-X, ERx, and Gq-mER.
Estradiol, like other steroid hormones, is derived from cholesterol. After side chain cleavage and using the Δ5 or the Δ4- pathway, androstenedione is the key intermediary. A portion of the androstenedione is converted to testosterone, which in turn undergoes conversion to estradiol by aromatase. In an alternative pathway, androstenedione is aromatized to estrone, which is subsequently converted to estradiol via 17ÎČ-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17ÎČ-HSD).
Estradiol is an estrane steroid. It is also known as 17ÎČ-estradiol (to distinguish it from 17α-estradiol) or as estra-1,3,5(10)-triene-3,17ÎČ-diol. It has two hydroxyl groups, one at the C3 position and the other at the 17ÎČ position, as well as three double bonds in the A ring. Due to its two hydroxyl groups, estradiol is often abbreviated as E2. The structurally related estrogens, estrone (E1), estriol (E3), and estetrol (E4) have one, three, and four hydroxyl groups, respectively.
