I knew nothing about F1 until I read Sit Tight, Take Hold this year. Now I’m sad that Daniel Ricciaddo is retiring, and I’m dying to talk about it with F1 fans I know in real life. But I can’t because I don’t know how to explain that I like Daniel primarily because he was the teammate of a fictional driver in a gay fanfic based on a TV show they’ve probably never heard of like WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN
hello!
i'm honestly unwell about danny right now. i waited a bit to respond to this ask because i have been really struggling this weekend.
danny hasn't been performing up to par lately, but the way everything has been handled is so absurd and crazy. two months ago, people were talking about him being guaranteed that red bull seat. then suddenly it was 'liam lawson to replace him in 2025,' and within a week it turned into, 'he's fired after singapore.'
nobody actually knows if he's done or not. it may be likely, but rbr refuse to confirm or deny, just saying they have to look at their options. and we don't know actually know if anyone has told danny anything, but he basically found out from journalists that it was going to be his 'last weekend.'
so, there was no official goodbye. and zak brown is being shitty about him taking fastest lap (danny now holds the fastest lap record at singapore, btw. in a vcarb. how's that for getting fired?), and i have spent a good chunk of the weekend crying.
i love this sport in some ways, but there's a lot to hate or dislike. anytime i see someone say they now subscribe to f1tv because of #rr, i cringe because the governing body of the fia and liberty media does not deserve your money. #rr is the way it is because there's a lot i hate about reality, and i wanted to make it better, even if it was just fiction.
danny has been an ambassador for f1, and he's largely the reason why f1 has so many new fans over the years. with 257 races under his belt, he is now in the top ten of f1 drivers with the most race starts. he's won eight grand prixs when many drivers hope to win even just one. his decision-making has been questionable when it comes to career moves, but he has always been one of the most respected and respectful drivers on the grid. if this is the end, then i hope he takes some time off to heal, and then he can go on and do other great things. race elsewhere or focus more on his vineyard or start a farm or sleep in until noon. whatever the fuck he wants.
personally, i would like danny to come do indycar in the states because then i could actually afford to watch him race, but even this weekend he said that indy still scares him.
but i think we should be paying attention to how this is being handled because danny is in the crossfire, but he's not the real problem. the pr nightmare that is this dumpster fire of a weekend is symptomatic of a greater collapse at red bull. they have lost several key team members (another one was announced today) admist a power struggle within the organization, and it could very well be that no one knows if danny is staying or not publically because nobody knows internally either. even vcarb's team principal does not know, which is why they did a big send off for him post-race just in case.
rbr just lost the lead on the constructors championship and max might very well lose the drivers championship. christian horner was caught in a sex scandal, and their junior driver director spouts off horrifically racist shit all day long and loves to shit stir. helmut marko is probably the reason why yuki is not getting promoted to red bull racing despite outscoring danny this season and being on the junior team for four seasons, yet marko also will not release yuki from his contract. last year, yuki tried to find another seat for 2024 and rb blocked it. and with all the other bullshit about censorship this year and poor performance of red bull's car, max is even talking about retiring.
it's a mess right now and dr3 is a teeny tiny piece of this. this mismanagement of danny's retirement is just the biggest red flag we've seen all season (which is incredible because there have been so many red flags).
so yeah.

Hello. I'm sorry you're here, you deserve better.
Hate isn't tolerated here. That doesn't mean I'm nice when dealing with it - it means I don't tolerate it, I energy match. Bullshit gets met with bullshit. (Look up the paradox of intolerance.) There's a difference between bullshit and asking/opining on something in good faith. I energy match that, too. I love reading others' good points and sharing my own. Facts and figures and objectivity are exciting.
I don't hate Oscar Piastri. Or Logan Sargeant. Or Lance Stroll**. Or any other F1 driver. I strongly dislike "stans" who refuse to listen to facts and logic and how Formula 1 works, and, well, I can see how there's confusion. It's a complex, wonderful, heartbreaking sport when you deal with reality, the emotional drama and willful ignorance isn't even necessary if you want tears or joy. Objective criticism and pointing out factual information is not "hating." I wrote a whole essay on that. People liked it.
I've been called a racist for saying Yuki Tsunoda has benefitted from having Daniel Ricciardo as a teammate - even though he said it himself. That same week, I was told I was a SJW and too hard on Kyle Larson for casually using the N-word when he forgot he was on live TV. I refer to this as being Schrodinger's Racist. It's frustrating.
I'm a bad DR fan because I talked about the possibility of him retiring/leaving F1 after this season given the state of RBR and no fault of his own - even though those same people who told me to "get fucked" for "being negative" have been talking about that topic nonstop.
I was blocked for being too much of a DR fan by Lando Norris fans - and also blocked by DR fans for being too much of a Lando Norris fan.
Carlos Sainz has been my favorite F1 driver as long as Carlos Sainz has been an F1 driver. I practice self care by staying away from Ferrari things online. He's reliable. I don't need to worry about him.
I've spent a lot of years with a strong connection to professional sports. When I talk about the "business" of it all or allude to what goes on out of public view, I'm speaking from a place of having experienced or seen these things. It doesn't apply in all ways, but I have lived experience and firsthand accounts. Take that as you will.
The first "real" racing event I attended was Daytona. In 2000. Covid aside, I've been to at least one major motorsports weekend every year since, typically multiples (3 NASCAR and one F1 this year). I try not to talk about NASCAR because so much about it is problematic and I don't have the energy to deal with "they don't have issues, they made a rainbow YAAASCAR shirt." Don't even get me started on the inequity.
I'm old. Yeah, at my age, I should be better, I guess. But I've spent too many years nodding along with people who were bad or wrong or both to keep the peace, in sports and in the world at-large, and maybe if I'd spoken up once or twice, things could've been different. (Maybe this is therapy?) I don't expect to change the world, I'm nobody. I don't matter. I'm just adding my thoughts to the pile of crap so I can say where I stand, for me.
If there's something you want to know or want clarified, and you ask in good faith, I'm happy to talk. For all my frustration, I know there's a lot of good, even on social media, and I welcome it. Sports are better when fans are diverse, but the real big brain thing is when they're diverse and educated. That's my dream for fans everywhere. Emotion is a huge part of it, but when it's the only part... Yeah.
✌🏼
**Okay, maybe I do hate Lance Stroll because of how he berates his engineers on the reg and thinks it's okay to physically assault team members. That's not how a good person acts. Still don't want physical harm to come to the guy or anything.

it's mostly just christian horner being hypocritical and trying to act like TONS of his own drivers haven't struggled with weight or mental health for me. that's an f1-wide thing, not a mclaren specific problem. and this is coming from someone who actually liked christian prior to all the staniel "waaah daniel is such a victim, did no wrong, still the best driver on the grid" (which if he truly believed, he'd have him in a race seat right now, not just bring him up to make him look like a victim or have liam/DC doing show runs while he's partying and clubbing). also LOL if christian is going to act like he doesn't prioritize his faster driver in strategies and such. that's quite literally how f1 works. if a driver is slow, fuck no the entire team isn't going to suffer and hold another driver back to stroke their egos. max wouldn't have 2 championships if red bull took the "teammate uwu rainbows and sunshine" approach that christian apparently thinks mclaren should take. 🙄 sorry if that's mean but i already know lando and oscar are yet again going to have to pay for the "waaah danny baby victim" narrative and it's fucking annoying and shitty for christian to basically get the ball rolling on a weekend where we've already had bullshit like "who's oscar? it's daniel's gp?" i love max, but christian isn't it atm.
like this is completely understandable, i just also think from the pov of the engineers that work at red bull and how they have been constantly under fire and hated by people on here and twitter just because they work at red bull and apparently don’t care about the drivers mental health get forgotten about in conversations like this
we can point out the absolute shit that mclaren employees get all the time but you never see people talk about the shit the red bull guys get, how calum got called a racist and someone that doesn’t care about his culture or heritage just because he works at red bull, how people like to say that calum is only there for diversity points and not because he’s a top qualified engineer that’s been in the sport for YEARS
no tp is a saint, and christian was a complete dick when he said that shit about daniel and mclaren, but the narrative that only red bull create mental health issues in drivers is complete bullshit
val needed help whilst he was a merc, lando needs help while he is in mclaren, gr is more open with talking about mental health even after moving to a top team, seb has said that the drivers talk to each other about their health because they are still reluctant to talk openly about it
i just think that people use this to fuel their agendas against rbr and it completely diminishes the real problem and the struggle the drivers go through

Besides the clear hypocrisy of comparing Yuki and Max when it comes to explosions on the radio...holy shit racism, Batman. The literal racist expectation of Yuki to be a quiet, subservient Asian to gain your approval. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda has repeatedly been noticed in the past by grids on the radio. His racing engineer in particular felt the frustration of the Japanese, so that Red Bull has now organized a psychologist for Tsunoda, as Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko announced at ServusTV.
"Thank God our Max is quiet," says Marko. "Our problem child is the Tsunoda. It explodes on the radio, you think that doesn't exist at all." Although the AlphaTauri driver improved somewhat this season, Red Bull saw some catching up to do.
"We specially organized a kind of psychologist who works with him, because he continued to scold in the curves. So that inhibits performance," explains Red Bull's motorsport consultant.
Helmut Marko: Yuki Tsunoda needs a psychologist

Now that Max has literally with his whole chest defended a racist, he is culpable for irreparable harm. He has been for a long time. He has established a pattern of racist behaviour. He has indicated that he is not willing to consider the harm his behaviour causes to those he has victimized and not only that, he goes out of his way to deny the experience of the victimized. And none of his previous experiences has caused change or growth. The same mistakes are repeated. Moreover, it doesn't matter that he might be stifled or influenced by those around him, or that racist remarks were made by someone he is close to, this has happened one too many times. People have repeatedly tried to explain to him, but there has been no progress. Truth be told, he didn't have to defend Nelson Piquet, he could have kept silent, or say that he disagreed with Piquet on this matter, but he didn't. And he is alone responsible for his own choices and actions. People can say what they want about his upbringing. He's not responsible for what happened to him, but he is responsible for his current choices that he performs freely.
For a company that prides itself on good PR? It's really missed the mark these last few days.

hi! this is gonna be so random and sudden i'm sorry but i have a question -- how do you cope with people writing off and criticizing seb? i started to really stan him over winter break (mostly because of blogs like yours!) and i made the mistake of reading three articles that said aston martin made a mistake in choosing seb (one from max, one from eddie jordan, and one from reddit) and i'm just... just y'all fucking wait to eat your words sebastian "twink-turned-fuckboy-turned-father" is gonna be back to kick all of y'alls asses 😤😤😤 but honestly tho like how do you cope with that. it's fine if you don't answer this (ik this may be sudden and draining) but i hope you're having a good day!! 💓
Hello 💕
Okay, so this ask is super old and I remember seeing it and having so many thoughts and then no time to answer and then forgetting and then remembering but being embarrassed cause it took me so long and ... I just reblogged sth about toxic traits and yeah, that’s one of mine: never answering messages 🙈
So I am sorry but if you still care: here are my thoughts!
(Under a read more cause a bitch has things to say)
I should admit beforehand that I am still fairly new to online fandom of F1, I didn’t really consider getting involved in it when I watched as a child and I didn’t care enough to look for fandom when I restarted keeping up with it in like 2018 ... until Ferrari fired Seb and ya‘ll kept trending that is 🙈😂
But back to dealing with the criticism, I think it comes down to a few things:
1, You have to figure out what you want from F1 and especially this fandom! Me, I met some really cool people and I found out I love making memes so that’s what I am doing and - this is my white girl privilege I guess - I will sometimes ignore toxic stuff so it won’t kill my mood (it‘s easier with Seb than it is with Alex cause some of ya‘ll are ✨racist✨)
2, consider who is criticizing Seb, which for me is such a big thing cause if you look at the people the criticize him (Max aside) it‘s never the people who know him and never the people who actually raced against him! Those people are usually full of praise of him, like Lewis or Charles or Horner or fuck, even Mark! Hell, even Fernando has by now admitted that Seb didn’t deserve the shit he said about him back then!
3, what are they actually saying? I mean, generally speaking it‘s always: Seb is washed up. Seb is too sensitive of a driver. Seb just got lucky being in RBR at the time. Sbinalla! And just, you know what? You don’t get 4 titles, you don’t become the third most successful driver of all time and you don’t take the fight so close to Lewis and Mercedes for so long by sheer luck!
4, Seb says he doesn’t care and while I think it’s bullshit that he doesn’t care at all - I think Seb has been in this sport too long and has gotten too much shit even when he was running the show to actually give the critics too much space so why should I? I am here to support Seb not to fight assholes!
5, one thing that plays into this but for me deserves it’s own point: you mentioned the thing about proving the critics wrong and while I want Seb to come out on top with Aston Martin ... I also think he has fuck all to prove to anyone, buddy IS the third most successful driver (so far), he IS a four times WDC, he IS an amazing athlete ... and most importantly he seems to be a wonderful human being and a loving father and honestly that‘s more important to me and also means (imo) he has shit all to prove to anyone, especially guys like Max or Martin Brundle or men on reddit who haven’t had a quarter of the success he‘s had!
6, and this is where I commit sacrilege so please no one cancel me as a Seb fan but: one thing that really helped me deal with people criticizing Seb is the fact that I accepted (for myself) imho Seb really isn’t the best driver ever ... he isn’t as talented as Lewis or Michael or Ayrton or whatever ... he does have more flaws as a driver ... he can be a bully on track ... he makes dumb mistakes ... but you know what? Idc! That‘s the thing for me: Idc if he‘s the best or if he’s winning or if he beats so and so and proves so and so wrong cause I like HIM both as a driver and a person and I want him to be happy and I wanna support him and while I am obviously always hoping he comes our on top if he doesn’t? Eh, that‘s okay for me! What I love about Seb is that he’s been so successful despite all his flaws because for me Seb wasn’t this successful cause he’s oh so talented (like Max supposedly is) but cause he put in the work! For me Seb proves that sometimes loving something and then working for it ... even when you might not be as good at it initially ... is worth it! That wanting something bad enough can get you somewhere even when everything wants you to fail
And that‘s my thought and if you do read it dear anon, I hope you are well and this helped or maybe you have completely different thoughts by now or don’t even care about Seb anymore but yeah, this is how I deal!
Anyways, stay frosty and remember: red means stop but green means go!

At this point, the only way for Red Bull to clean up its image is to actually, monetarily and show up to support anti-racism causes. Joining Mission 44 would be a good start. No amount of PR is going to persuade anyone that they don't tolerate racism and homophobia. Like, you gotta wonder which of their fancy sponsors are wanting to jump ship at this point.

It's never been more clear that Red Bull condones any form of racism and discrimination. Moreover, their PR about not condoning any form of racism in their organization is just that. PR.

Wow. I can't see at all why they decided to ban him from the paddock even though he apologized. It's almost like they probably had people who know Brazilian Portuguese listen to the entire thing and go: Wow everything is racist and homophobic. There is no salvaging this. It makes Max's comments look even more foolish.
TW HOMOPHOBIA AND RACISM
So, someone who was brave enough listened to the entire Nelson Piquet interview and well guess what, more shit was found, and specifically a phrase that I'll translate bellow which contain HEAVY homophobia and HEAVY racism please be careful while reading.
" Keke (Rosberg)? He was a piece of shit, had no value. Just like his son (Nico). He won one championship... The little n-word was probably getting fucked in the ass more by him at that time, so he was kinda (driving) bad" Piquet affirmed laughing.

I will not be surprised if Max and Red Bull get booed this weekend that we will hear of a rule that will ban booing from races.
...And it will become a thing because the racist team cannot take booing, but racialized people must endure it.

Austrian GP 2022: The Consequences of Max Verstappen’s Defence of Racism
I have said previously that Max Verstappen had committed irreparable harm towards Lewis and it is NEVER clearer than at the Austrian Grand Prix. By defending Nelson Piquet’s racist words and use of the n-word, he has actively added to and helped to create whether intentionally or intentionally the racist atmosphere of the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.
By not condemning Nelson Piquet’s words and use of the n-word, he has made it okay for his fans to use the slur towards Lewis from which multiple fan accounts have attested to on Tumblr. These racist people can now use the excuse that their language means ‘guy’. His tolerance for racist behaviour has spread it. He calls racism bad. It’s so obvious that racism is bad, right? But he willingly chooses to exacerbate it. He has not decreased or prevented it in any way.
It would be enough if it was just Max Verstappen doing this, but it’s not.
In choosing not to name Nelson Piquet, in choosing not to actively inform and describe WHY Nelson Piquet’s behaviour was heinous and unacceptable, F1 is once again lazily declaring racism bad, but doing nothing to stop it’s spread. In fact, every single journalist who chose not to explain exactly why Nelson Piquet’s words were racist or call out his so-called ‘apology’ are complicit in this.
F1, hell, the new president of the FIA have decided that they want more diversity in motorsport, but how can that be possible when in real terms, in blinding daylight, they would do absolutely nothing to keep these racialized peoples, these minorities safe? No, what they condone is a mass of ‘fans’ cheering a black athlete’s crash and potential harm when they don’t comment on it. They want a more diverse, new audience, but come to the race and is it safe for any minority when there is a huge mass of people cheering the harm of a black man?
And then of course, we have Red Bull itself, the organization which condemns racism of any kind within its own organization, supposedly, but I guess none of Max’s racist fans are in its purview. I guess team principals and directors of junior development are exempt from judgment and get a free pass. Star drivers are free to use racial slurs, ableist slurs, misogynistic language and defend known racists and homophobes, even incite potentially violent crowd behaviour. And of course, saving face is more important than any kind of anti-racism. Symbolic gestures are more important than real action and change.
More pressingly, since many of you are women here and many of you are also non-white, or people of colour, I hope you know this: Max Verstappen, Christian Horner, Helmut Marko and Red Bull are not safe for you. You can NEVER guarantee or count on these people to defend or protect you in any potentially dangerous situation for you. Based on their behaviours, they are likely to think your situation is funny at best or actively add to the danger. And you can’t afford to think differently. Not when your safety and life could be on the line.

Nelson Piquet: Uses racial slur.
Max Verstappen: He's not a racist.
Nelson Piquet: Hold my beer. I'm a racist and a homophobe.
Brazilian Parliamentarians: We're taking the racist homopobe to court for his slurs!
Tumblr media
"The complaint was made by the PSOL bench in the Chamber of Deputies, which accuses Piquet of practicing the crime of discrimination or prejudice.
PSOL parliamentarians state in the complaint that the racism proclaimed is unacceptable within the scope of the democratic rule of law and that Piquet's speech deserves repudiation by all who believe in constitutional principles.
Nelson Piquet is yet another proof that the virulent rhetoric employed by President Jair Bolsonaro enables his supporters to feel liberated to use the same terms and the same class, race and gender prejudices." x
