Today is New Year’s Day. There are many traditions associated with the bringing of good luck on 1st January, in the belief if good fortune greets you at the start of the year, it will stay with you for the full twelve months. The most well-known of these is first-footing, in which a tall dark male outsider enters the home soon after midnight, bearing coal, salt and cake, symbolising the warmth, wealth and food that the custom is supposed to bestow on the house. These gifts collectively were known as handsel. The first footer should always be well entertained by the household after having completed his task. Sometimes of course first-footing is not pre-planned. If a friendly neighbour wanders in to wish you a Happy New Year, and he or she is bearing nothing, a miserable year is in prospect.
In addition to customs bringing good fortune, there were others designed to drive out ill luck. In medieval times a ritual known as “rattling the town” took place in which a group of townsfolk, elaborately dressed and masked, would run through the streets, striking walls and doors with staves, so as to drive out the bad spirits of the old year and enable the community to start anew.
Another tradition that takes place today at Kirkwall, on Orkney, is a rough and tumble football match (the Ba’ Game) that takes place in front of the cathedral at Mercat Cross. It starts at 1pm but can last up to seven hours. The teams are divided into Uppies and Downies, signifying uptown and downtown, and the object of the game is to kick a cork-filled ball across one of the town boundaries by any means necessary. 120 players take part and Association Football rules are non-existent.

Very very glad to have my guard dog and my house dogs being in such a sketchy neighbourhood. It doesn't surprise me that a gun was fired literally right outside my house this morning. I see a lot of sketchy shit happening around here. But I mind my business. I get left alone. It also could still be worse. Would be nice if the government would consider dealing with poverty so maybe this shit wouldn't be happening...

rotating stardew frank in my brain

We've got homework that we should design a story with instrumental breaks, which will be graded. I haven't done anything for that yet. Even tho it was due several weeks ago and classmates already got their grades.
#dragon's stupid thoughts#thank god playing through majoras mask and triforce heroes got me a story idea#actually Link's Awakening too#town is holding a festival with a lot of music#one boy who plays a flute was invited but he overslept and thus is late#luckily for him tho as a wicked witch was so annoyed by that music that she turned everyone to stone#the little boy only sees the chaos that was left and decided to visit his friends who also got instruments (which are special and magic)#and save the people and the town#the friends are stone dragons. mermaids. wood spirits and uhh birds? are they any cool mythological bird creatures?? aside phoenixes??#instruments used will be whistling (the boy) (we don't have flutes as an option). drums (stone dragon). xylophones (mermaids).#slap sticks(????) (for the wood spirits) and... uhm... a rattle maybe (for the birbs)#together they make a beautiful concert that takes the stone curse from everyone yay#the witch comes back but the boy asks her what SHE would like to hear#she tells them and then everyone is happy. yay#this is supposed to be a story for kids so there's has to be a happy ending and everyone is happy and such#i hope i have luck and don't have to present my story tomorrow#I have to write my story down during the other classes that come before music class

#client: so if civilization died or the apocalypse happened what are your plans?#How I want to Answer: I'm gonna live full time in the woods and probably not venture to any towns or cities until a year passes#I'll probably be nomadic and won't have my camp in the same spot for safety reasons#I'm gonna sharpen some of my teeth so people know not to fuck around and find out plus biting is a strong go to when I fight#All my knives spears axes etc. will likely be coated with rattle snake venom from the sneks I milk myself#so attackers go out painfully and if they escape I can track them down like a komodo dragon while they slowly lose their minds#and to amp up the psychological warfare I have 3 aztec death whistles on hand and can make ungodly bird calls naturally to chase people awa#from my territory and if I could make it safe I'd coat my sharpened teeth with snake venom too#but honestly for the most part I'd be the chillest mf to be around and very helpful with healing and crafting#provided you ain't trying to round me up as a “resource” cause I'm AFAB or subject me to shit I don't want to do or threaten me in general#How I answered: y'know I haven't given it much thought!
