How did you develop your art style?

Q1. How did you develop your art style?

It was a three-year journey of self-discovery, art envy, hard work, and fixation to a single OC.

And this is fun to answer because I came prepared and I have a Powerpoint Presentation for this one (I created this for a talk about digital art that I gave to one university earlier this year).

I started with something really close to realism. I did this maybe because I wanted to learn how to draw features like eyes, nose, hair, etc.

A few months into it, I started to develop my own way of drawing these features. One of my moots said that my signature was the nose, that I had this distinct way of drawing nose that once they see it, they'd say "Amalthia drew this."

Once I established my 'own way of drawing things' I started to play with brushes and textures.

I continued on to straying far from realism that little by little, my art becomes more and more 'geometric'. Then I got fucking sick of it. My little sister was watching the Tangled series and it was that moment that I pointed to the screen and said, "that's what I want to do".

However, that was still not the end for me. I went on too saying 'too geometric' and then, 'ugh now it's nearer to realism and I don't like that anymore'.

And that's how I arrived to my July 2023 art style; flat but not too flat, geometric but not too geometric, semi-realistic but not too much.

So, to answer the question: draw till you hate drawing it. Because that is when you try things. You hate how that looks like? Change it. You think the hair's too ugly? Try a new technique.

Q2: Who is your favorite to draw?

Okay, at this point, it's obvious that I love drawing THAT original character. Her name is Shelby. I love drawing her because she's mine, and she was the first ever character to be mine. On the art side of things, I draw her a lot because I had memorized her face so much that I can easily play with her appeareance.

Now, for Star Wars, I love drawing Hunter, Tech, Bo-Katan, Riyo Chuchi, and Hera Syndulla.

I like drawing Hunter because of his hair. Hair is always my favorite part to draw. I always love adding little strays, I like to think that it adds beauty to the artwork, and with Hunter I can just do that (except for that one time I drew him with wet hair).

I like drawing Tech because I think his face screams geometry. It doesn't make sense, I know but that's how I see him. With his design, I can easily play with shapes. So it's really good practice for me.

For Bo-Katan, it was also the hair for me. There's a certain way I draw short straight hair and I think I did it best with Bo-Katan.

Riyo, for me, is one of the best designed characters in Star Wars and that is why I love drawing her. I've drawn her three times by now. I love her hairstyle. And as much as I can't add little strays to it, its texture or having to add texture to it makes drawing her really fun for me.

I love drawing Hera because I LOVE TWI'LEKS.

Last one, I like drawing characters played by Ming-Na Wen. It all started with my Mulan art (which I've been planning to redraw) and then I drew Fennec.

Man, I hope this makes sense.

Star Wars AU: Jedi Academy

New batch of micros for my Star Wars AU! This time around, I've made characters from the Jedi Academy video game, specifically, Jaden Korr and his class of students. While Jaden is officially a human male, the game allows the player to choose the gender and species of their choice. As such, I opted to create a batch of OCs that are centered around the various options for Jaden in the game.

-Dawn Syndulla-Jarrus, Twi'lek female, daughter of Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla (my personal take on a popular Rebels fanbaby).

-Rosh Penin, Human male, rival who struggles with the temptations of the Dark Side.

-Ceres Marek, Human female, daughter of Starkiller and Juno Eclipse, aspiring Jedi Beast Master.

-Opol Nok, Kel Dor male, Jedi Shadow and apprentice to the Baran Do Sages.

-Raltheran, Rodian male, apprentice to Corran Horn and Jedi Investigator (actual canon character, appearance is random).

_Oiri Reshna, Zabrak female, strives to become a Jedi Weapon Master.

I have been trying to get back into drawing and I've had to re-learn a lot, but I feel like I've improved a quite a bit in the last week of practicing. Tonight's practice ended up being a random twi'lek. Not even one of my OCs but I do like how they turned out. So, enjoy!

19. Has your OC ever had an experience with the paranormal or the divine? What happened? Was it a one time encounter or is it a normal part of their life? Did they find it terrifying or thrilling?

Pravin has a weird little affection for some of the corner stores, hole-in-the-wall cantinas and other quirky local businesses one finds in Hutt Space. He spent the bulk of his Intelligence career on Hutta, and something he really enjoyed about it was the sense of community borne of necessity in the urban neighborhoods--Imperial culture tends to have a strong distinction between public and private life, but on Hutta it was so easy to bond with clerks, barbers, waitstaff, random dudes who frequented the same cantina every day of the week, and so on. He always had his colleagues when things got rough, sure, but some of his best memories there include a twi'lek shopkeeper who served him tea and sweets in the stockroom when he walked in rattled after a difficult op, the trio of barfly rodians who taught him bawdy songs in their language and bought him a bottle of fine brandy for his birthday (not his actual birthday, of course, but one from a fake ID), and the gran woman who, despite her unsettling appearance, trimmed his beard and hair with impressive precision, clucking and cooing about how handsome he was before sending him forth through a cloud of spicy aftershave. Those experiences broadened his perspective--he still makes some racist assumptions of aliens' abilities, but not to the extent he used to. There's a lot of good people in the galaxy, even in dark places.

He dreams of Kaas City a lot, the good and bad. He grew up in the greater Kaasian metropolitan area, and has many pleasant memories of the city--time spent in cafés and clubs in his youth, coming to Home Office for the first time and meeting Shara, going cantina-hopping with colleagues after his promotion and getting ridiculously drunk--times when he considered the place home. He remembers when it stopped feeling like home, a flight back between bright spires shrouded by lingering fog, his mental and physical wounds fresh and smarting. Shara unconscious in a hospital bed, Watcher Three being tortured--there's a lot in the aftermath that he prefers not to recall.

His actual nightmares are mostly on Quesh. Some of the other excursions he made with Kothe's group come to mind in disconnected fragments--partly due to neurological trauma from the mind control and its undoing, partly sheer psychological dissociation--but he remembers most everything that happened on Quesh in stark clarity: the red-orange, murky light from a polluted sky, the rocky hills, the fear and pain. Sometimes he wakes up and the impressions are so strong that he thinks he's still there for a few terrified minutes. He hopes to never have reason to return.

Pravin's pretty superstitious despite himself--he is, after all, an actor--and he's thus experienced or witnessed a few mishaps in rehearsal or performances that he thinks of in supernatural terms while simultaneously dismissing them as silly: stuff like 'I accidentally cursed my colleague with bad luck by pointing a prop weapon at him while not en masqué and failing to ask the Maker for mercy.' That's little stuff, though; he's had a few larger experiences too, notably this one:

When Gaubert was injured, there were some fraught early days where his health was touch-and-go; if his lung scarring progressed to infection, there was little healers could do. He and Pravin had had a difficult discussion about what should happen to Gaubert's possessions should he pass, one where Gaubert had intimated to Pravin that he thought of him as his son and given him one of his treasured possessions, a silver Andrastian medal. Pravin hadn't been able to sleep after that; he'd gotten up and walked around Val Chevin's downtown a bit and wound up in his local chantry. The place happened to be empty after an early morning liturgy, and the solitude appealed to him; he went and sat in one of the pews near the holy brazier at the front and figured he might as well pray for Gaubert.

As soon as he started, he just broke. He'd been holding himself together for the sake of his housemates, and in the silence and the solitude of that place he started openly weeping and muttering incoherently: Maker, I'm so sorry. I know I'm a sinner. Have mercy on me. I can't endure this again. Andraste, Our Lady of Sorrow, have pity on me.

Then, after some indeterminate period of time, he received something--less in words than a sort of calm, firm impression: it'll be all right.

It was such a bolt from the blue that he looked up in shock at the brazier's licking flames, then around, as though someone had approached him. He was still alone.

He didn't mention the experience to his housemates immediately, but ultimately told Lautilde first, in confidence and with much qualification: I don't know if it was my own mind or a spirit or what, and I don't know what it meant, if anything at all.

Lautilde dismissed all of that. You know it was she.

Pravin still isn't sure Andraste and the Maker particularly like him, given all he's done, but he thinks about the experience from time to time, and wears that medal constantly beneath his shirt.

Meet my OC, Sen Dangir

I can't draw for shit, so hopefully the pinterest board I made will help *catch the vibe*

This will be the man of Hunter's dreams, and Hunter will be the man of Sen's dreams, they both just don't know it yet!

Sen is a Twi'lek male in his mid-twenties. He has red and orange colored skin with swirling and circular patterns. His eyes are honey colored. He likes to wear bandanas as head scarves and has strings of beads hanging in his lekku.

Sen has his septum pierced. He loves to find fun, colorful jewelry and is learning to make his own! He would like to get a nostril piercing as well.

Sen has his graduate degree in art! He specializes in oil painting.

Sen's a pretty heavy sleeper. Meanwhile Hunter is the lightest sleeper ever because of his enhanced senses so it makes for some interesting sleeping habits between them. For example:

Sen: Why?

Hunter: Because of the LOUD thunder and lightning storm last night?

Sen: There was a storm last night?

Hunter: - _ -

Nature:

Sen uses he/him/his pronouns and is a very proud and out gay man!

🍎 RED APPLE — where was your oc born? do they still live in/around their place of birth or do they live somewhere else? how do they feel about their birthplace?

Sen was born on Ryloth and lived there until the empire took over. The war brought to his home planet along with a devastating break up led to Sen hearing about Pabu from a mutual friend. He quickly got out of Ryloth and lived with his friend until he got a job and could find his own place.

While he loves Pabu, he does miss his home and hopes to return one day. After all, his parents are still there to support the Ryloth government to regain control from the empire.

Hearts:

He does not care what ANYONE thinks of his appearance! He's unapologetic about his 'loud' fashion taste or that he likes to paint his nails!

Always is there for friends when they need him

King of Fun, whether that be at parties or just hanging out with his close group of friends

🤍 WHITE HEART — what are three of your oc's neutral/questionable traits?

He is spontaneous with plans usually. While that's fine for some people and his friends have gotten used to it over time, it can be frustrating for others. It was hurdle in his and Hunter's relationship early on because Hunter is a planner. Plus, having Omega and his brothers around, Hunter couldn't often do things spontaneously/last-minute.

He's a bit daring/a daredevil! He never tries to put others in danger but he himself has an adventurous streak and will do activities that could be dangerous (bungee jumping, bouldering, riding motorcycles). He hardly ever turns down a dare

Emotional! He used to wear his emotions right out on his sleeve but after the previously mentioned breakup he's become a bit more on guard with his emotions with other people. Still, things like watching Pixar movies or creating a really moving art piece will bring the emotions right out of this guy!

Foods:

🍔 HAMBURGER — is your oc good at cooking? are they good at baking? which one do they prefer?

As said before, Sen is a horrible cook and even worse at baking. Which is problematic because Hunter is also a terrible cook. They have to recruit Wrecker and the others to teach them some basic healthy recipes otherwise they rack up the take-out food bill.

☕️ HOT BEVERAGE — does your oc prefer coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, water, or some other drink? how do they like to take this drink (ex. coffee with milk, hot chocolate with whipped cream, a specific kind of tea, etc)?

Sen. Loves. Coffee. He gets an espresso machine for his birthday which he is SO excited about because he can make his favorite drink: a cappuccino (espresso, steamed milk, milk foam). When he meets Hunter he's devastated to find out he doesn't even know what a cappuccino is. Sen is convinced it'll change his life.

People:

😊 SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES — what are your oc's career/general life desires? what do they want to get the most out of life?

Sen's dream job is to have his own art studio and teach art classes to adults! Once he has some teaching under his belt he'd love to do some more travelling (he's spent most of his life on Ryloth so hasn't been many places/experienced many cultures). Maybe even take or teach art classes on other planets!

He doesn't see himself having kids but Sen would love to have a life partner. He loves his friends but has had a hard time being alone since his breakup from a four-year relationship.

🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms?

When in deep concentration, the tip of Sen's tongue sticks out and a vein just above his brow bone protrudes. He's done that since he's a little kid.

Also despite being an artist and having to be still to paint a lot, he can have a hard time sitting still. Fidgets and other sensory objects help with that. Also when Hunter or his friends are around Sen can talk to them which helps him concentrate.

Well, I think that's a long but good introduction! I can't wait to tell you more about him and get into his and Hunter's story! If you've made it this far, thank you so much you're a saint lol

@unmarked-credits This was a serious question that I felt would be answered better with pictures. This ended up being a very cute interaction and I may end up adding this to my fanfic. lol. I think he would humor the kid. He's an excellent liar, storyteller, and can pretend to be a Jedi, so this is a piece of cake. I don't think he'd hold anything against the kid, but he would be angry with the parents and hold them responsible for any nuisance caused by their child. XD They should be thankful he's not being paid to kidnap their kid atm, honestly. ALSO. The reasoning behind my answer is purely because of @bluedaddysgirl 's Dad Bane AU, specifically "I'll Make it Worth Your While" on AO3. Seriously, go read it. It's a cotton candy fluff fic that I adore, because it is told in a true-to-character fashion... somehow. I honestly don't know how BlueDaddysGirl did it.

A little compilation of all the face-claims (and sometimes voice-claims, those are harder to find!) of some of my Star Wars OCs! I often use fashion models as face-claims, and Dusk is the one (1) rare OC to have another fictional character as face-claim LMAO I’m super picky when it comes to voice & face-claims so that’s why not everyone has one. We see three human/twi’lek hybrids in Star Wars, and honestly, I’m not a huge fan of any of them? Like, they’re all cute and all, but I think human/hybrid twi’leks could be cooler than just ‘twi’lek with patterns on her face’ or ‘human but green hair and ears.’ 

But anyway I picked a *cough cough* totally “random” twi’lek and a *ahem* completely “random” clo - human and tried to figure out what a kid of their’s would look like. 

Not 100% sold on the skin colour, but I wanted something not quite blu - uuuh, obviously twi’lek and not quite human and a mix of the two instead of splotchy skin like Shaeeah and Jek have, or green tipped ears like Jacen.
