I think that the first time I noticed an established company spicing up their product line was with Mountain Dew Code Red. I was in 9th grade (around 14 years old) and me and my friends went wild for it. Then they came out with Mountain Dew Livewire as a limited edition flavor for the summer, and I thought "they can't keep getting away with this", and then immediately bought some. It was a mainstay of our D&D nights.

To some extent, I think brands doing these weird things is just novelty injection, attempting to get some market share back. Most of the combinations won't last, since they're just not good enough, but people will see these variants in the store, and they'll say "hot damn, what's that like, I have to try it".

To a lesser extent, I'll claim that this has some element of postmodernism. There's something of parody and pastiche, a way that Reese's Puffs stuffed Reese's Cups are self-referential in concept if not in flavor.

Anyway, I was at the gas station, and came across this:

Is this not a perfect encapsulation of the modern consumer era? Is this not art? Don't you look at this and think "yes, this is the end of history, there is no further evolution past this point, only remixes of remixes, brands copulating with each other and giving birth to transient products that will fly off the shelves and then be forgotten fifteen minutes later".

I think the thing that got me most, as I stood there in the store staring at this freshly-stocked bag of onion (flavored) rings was that there's no actual ramen pictured, only the cup that ramen comes in, ramen signified by a familiar piece of styrofoam.

I felt an almost civic duty to buy them. I haven't eaten them yet, but whether they're good or not is sort of beside the point.

Unfortunately I didn't make it before the end of Pride Month, but - while there are a lot of potentially queer ships in the subtext of the Digimon universe that fit the tone, there aren't as many of them that came this close to technically being confirmed as having a valid (canon) baseline as this one.

To ask if canon provides input on Daisuke and Ken - or Daiken, Kensuke, Daisuken, however you want to call them -, is, once again, like asking if water is wet; they're the most elaborated relationship in the entirety of Digimon Adventure 02, the majority of Ken's development is tied to his bond to Daisuke... If you want to read more about why I value their relationship so much, I definitely recommend this post here, because they're just... Endlessly fascinating to me.

The good-hearted goofball with self-esteem issues that lead him to play a role to impress others initially - meets a corrupted genius and literally slaps the darkness out of his system. They turn from fated rivals to fated partners, facing the powers of darkness together and eventually, they become better people in the process thanks to one another. Daisuke's entire priority system changes upon wanting to give Ken a chance, he not only becomes more honest and less defensive, but also lets his personal sense of courage and friendship shine through; Ken, who's initially reluctant to take the hand Daisuke is offering him due to all the guilt he feels, slowly but steadily becomes the kind and gentle soul that was always within him, because there is someone by his side who has his back. Always.

It's a beautiful story of two complementing souls, whose bond enables the first real Jogress evolution, despite the fact - or even because - they couldn't be any more different. It's a story of repentance, forgiveness, learning to befriend others despite your own trauma and differences - and the story of a romantic subtext that almost hits you in the face if you're not careful enough. There is a reason why the screenshot above exists - the most recent movie literally acknowledged that, even after all these years, the bond between Daiken has not vanished and has, instead, gained a somewhat (actively) flirtatious nuance. While it used to be Ken who blushed due to Daisuke's (oftentimes oblivious) bluntness, the same Ken is now forward enough to openly praise Daisuke in ways that make it impossible to overlook the potential implications here - well, for anybody who isn't Daisuke himself at least...

Whether I think why and how they’d work.

Given the circumstances that we're, unfortunately, not talking about a canonically confirmed ship, we just gotta pretend that there will be a day when Ken's attempts of asking Daisuke out will be answered in two potential ways: 1.) "Huh? YOU WERE FLIRTING WITH ME THE ENTIRE TIME????" or 2.) "Huh? I thought we were together this entire time anyway???" Because both of these would be somewhat plausible "Daisuk-esque" reactions in my opinion.

I thoroughly believe that these two would work out romantically in fantastic ways - even though it'd take a lot of work, but which relationship that intends to last doesn't? They both chose careers that require enormous amounts of time and energy - and very irregular working hours. Granted, the latter applies to the majority of the Chosen Children, but an aspiring chef of his own Ramen cart may only be able to see an aspiring police officer if the latter's break time allows him to grab a meal at a Ramen facility that is coincidentally very close by... Gate hopping may have made that a lot easier, but at this point, we don't even know if that is still a thing anymore.

I still maintain that, as much as they'd be married to their jobs, they both still have quite a romantic side to themselves once the curse is broken - so they would make time, just like they did throughout all these years. While their interests in general might also be quite different, they would always find a way to bond over their mutual love for sports, football in particular. Ken needs someone who pulls him out of his head - and Daisuke needs someone who grounds him, which, as The Beginning suggested, is (basically) exactly their dynamic. They always enjoy group gatherings with their friend groups, food tastings are always a reason for Daisuke to invite everybody over - especially to lure Ken away from work. And let's be real, I can also see them go on cheesy dates - that mostly consist of them doing sporting activities (any kind of ball sport, rollerskating, hiking) where Daisuke can (pretend to) be competitive and Ken knowingly plays along with the teasing, just so they have an excuse to be close. Because they'd be cheesy like that, oh Lord, they'd be so cheesy in the most wanna-be-bro way possible.

Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship.

In a universe in which Miyaken doesn't become canon, there is literally no reason for Daiken not to be endgame - unless the writers actually had some guts and turned them into an official OT3 in The Beginning. Of course I can always enjoys them as just platonic life partners, bros 4 life, you don't even have to give it a label, as long as they remain as close as they are. Because they simply belong together, one way or another.

The Classes + Fanmade Districts

The Working Population

The Working Population is the average citizen in the Capitol, taking up the well majority of the population. it is technically the middle class by our standards, but in the Capitol it is the lower class since doctors, pilots, and architects and stuff are middle class only

so, though most of the hard labour and work are given to the Districts, there are jobs that the Districts can't serve to the Elite directly in the Capitol (like cooks, cleaners, drivers). of course, a good amount of these jobs are taken by avox, but there isn't possibly enough war criminals/caught runaways to serve the entire Elite population

plus, avox are really only owned and work for very rich and high above people, like the richest of the rich, and game staff. Snow honestly wanted to be a bit more of an asshole so instead of having Working Population servants he made sure that avox would be the only ones serving the tributes and Victors

jobs that the can Working Population cover are: teachers, maids, cooks, cleaners, babysitters, cleaners, basically most jobs where they work for a specific person/family/group of people

and, before the Hunger Games era, like way before, a few decades after Panem's creation there were more districts (literally self indulging from my fanmade Districts au). and a good amount of them joined the Capitol

Fanmade Districts (that disbanded and spread)

District 14: medicine. doctors, nurses, and medical scientists were all trained here and experiment in labs for new types of drugs/equipment/medicine that can be used for people. there is also the biggest hospital in Panem there, and there are factories that mass produce medicinal supplies like basic equipment and some drugs. this District was so incredibly loyal (rich and very important as well) to the Capitol they eventually joined in and became a sub-class

District 15: plastic/rubber production. basically factories that would mass produce these materials. all kinds of plastics and all kinds of rubber (plus in the future they make more biodegradable types of plastic). eventually, these factories were included in District 1 territory and joined them, becoming their lower class

District 16: tool production. basically blacksmiths who make axes, pickaxes, knives, hammers, scythes, machetes, and all other types of tools that would be used in other Districts. eventually this was moved to be mostly District 2's job, but there are still small groups of blacksmiths across all Districts that require such tools

District 17: animals. basically exotic animals and mutts. since in the future, there are many animals that naturally went through evolution, there are many useful but dangerous animals. this District basically took them, got stuff that benefited them such as, more healthy/nutrient full meat, harder and more powerful bones for good weapons/furniture, blood and poisons for medicine, etc. this eventually became another sub-class in the Capitol

District 18: research. this District was formed pretty later, like a lot later. this was more of historic research and entertaining scientific research, nothing that would really benefit the Capitol or Panem, but it was interesting (yeah, there's zodiac scientists and etymology nerds). this District was even smaller than 12, and was kind of useless. the Capitol liked them though so they let them join, they joined either Elite class or Working Population though

District 19: food. y'know those frozen foods you keep in your freezer and then warm up in a microwave? or cup ramen you just boil with water. most of those foods are probably made in factories, and that's what this District was for. there's also cheese factories and other factories for cleaning, cooking, and sanitizing foods. eventually, this job was spread out evenly throughout Districts 3, 7, 9, 10, 11, and some in the Capitol

District 20: oil and gas. yeah, car shit. there was more found eventually even after we ran out. gas was eventually stopped being used, but it did take a while to create generators. oils have their own factories in almost all Districts, stuff like coconut oil is One's job, but food oil is a mix of Seven and Eleven, maybe even a bit of Ten. anyways, not many of them made it to the Capitol

District 21: landfills/recycling centers. easy enough to understand, these people actually live terribly, though the work was split between the Capitol, some of District 3, and some of 5. imagine Wall-E, toiling away packing garbage, that is what they do. this District was split in half between landfills and recycling centers and have very different cultures/ideals, I'll make a post about them someday

District 22: entertainment. movies, video games, athletes, hell, authors if Capitol people read enough (jkjk, they do surprisingly). but yeah, this District ended up being split between the Capitol and District 1, a bit to District 3 for stuff like the metaverse or animatronics or cheap amusement parks

She doesn't know how citizen registration works around evolution, either. Just adding the name “Ishikawa” to the end of her name was a debacle and a half.

Haphazardly put together, the Ramen looks... fine. Instead of precisely cut ingredients, they are unevenly shaped and thrown with little care into the bowl. However, despite all of that, the Ramen still looks enticing, given that most of the tedious work was already done.

We've kind of established Lav and their shadow Mewtwo Opal as friends, so we've both drawn various interactions. I'll just show a few this time.

For the first one, they linked me a video and said Opal would be the dog, so I put Lav in the human's position.

Then, they wondered how Perzi would react to meeting Opal.

And finally, we decided that their Hisuian Zoroark Mysty would let Momo chew on her finger while Lav hung out and braided her mane. So I drew it! (Don't worry, Mysty washed her hands.)

When they made that awesome comic of Meau with the Lindens a little bit ago, I had a very brief moment where I thought Meau meant Randy and Akoya were the "peak Mew evolution". An image came to my head and I started to draw it before realizing they were referring to the twins. So I didn't finish, but I love Randy's face in it.

He does N O T see himself as the peak!

And then as we were chatting, I asked about the "borrowing" thing, and they explained that Meau would transform into a Pokemon to learn about it--In this case, they would transform into Perzi and follow him around and ask questions. Questions that are very scientific in nature. Which Perzi would absolutely not be able to answer.

So Phlurrii said Meau would go to Randy, unintentionally still in Perzi's form, and see if he had the answers.

Dragon easily wins the night with his comprehensive slideshow about Den Den Mushi Snails, everything from the discovery and origins to the potential future for the adorable mollusks. He even did a little Q&A segment at the end!

(I am also getting the mental image of little Dragon making a presentation back in the day to show his family and sjdsjelfjdj he’s so cute!)

Sabo has separate categories for spice and non spice lovers, as well as various gimmicky ramen shops thrown in as wild cards. He ensures that the spots he chooses are small mom and pop businesses because fuck the big chains, they cook with no love.

Koala wraps up her presentation with the bonus of goofy candids taken on the job. She has at least one of every upper officer in the RA, which she displays (with permission of course). She got a shot of a very sleepy Dragon one early morning, sitting at the table with his coffee, in a flannel robe over boxers and tank top, no eyeliner, scruffy as hell, and with a crazy case of bedhead. The one she got of Sabo was of him mid flamethrower-esque sneeze.

Dragon- with his lovely assistant Blanca the White Den Den Mushi- goes into fine detail about the speculative branch in evolution that might trace the den den’s species back to a common ancestor among the now extinct sky island dial mollusks. Lindbergh is taking extensive notes on the matter.

Rimi begins to sniff a human in a suit. Yea, Aki aka Rio is a Rockruff, and Rimi is from this evolution family. So, they both have something in common. The species and the suits.

Hello, it's Ni again with a little idea in mind: What if we start breaking the comfort zone and trying the most difficult part of Digimon writing/arting? Yes, the digimon.

I'm making this post an encouragement for you to start trying something new and expand your skills -- I'll share some of the tips I've been using for a whole decade when it comes to writing and drawing digimon with their human partners.

For writing:

My method is: making any inner monologue into a conversation and letting the digimon complete, elaborate, or comment on the human partner's lines.

The technique of the former has been observed by some people that this is basically what happens in-series (at least in Adventure/02 material) -- all of that planned inner monologue you had planned for the character? turn it into a conversation with the digimon. There's so little inner thoughts depicted in Adventure and 02 BUT there's a ton of little exchanges between the human with their partner. It also helps that in Adventure & 02, the digimon are somewhat an "other self" of the children, so they basically know them enough to point out when they're hesitant, nervous, angry, embarrassed or happy.

It also helps that certain digimon partners like Daisuke's V-mon, Jou's Gomamon and Wallace's Gummymon/Terriermon have no filter and try to encourage their partners by either roasting them by sheer accident. Remember, the digimon are extremely honest when it comes to their partners feelings, they can spot a lie pretty easily. So why not write Taichi saying a lie to hide something and Agumon innocently commenting aloud that that was a lie?

The latter technique is my own personal flavor. I'll give you an example: Daisuke is explaining his delicious new ramen recipe, and V-mon adds some commentaries like a TV announcer on TV commercials by saying "And there's more!" "Look at this delicious ramen broth!" "It's 100% approved by the customers!"

The digimon usually tends to put extra emphasis on what their partner is saying, or they make little comments! Or even, they might elaborate or complete phrases as well. The reverse can happen too, of course. Think about stuff like Happy Smile, 2-TOP, Fly High, HEY-Rasshai!, Forever Adolescence, etc songs where they have a little talk between the songs, or are bickering, or are completing the others’ lines.

For Drawing:

This part is a little more trickish, but here we go. Let’s watch a few shots of Digimon anime/movies and analyze how they depict the kids interacting with their digimon.

Since Tailmon is small, Hikari crouches to her eye level in order to talk with her in Kizuna. Note that this is how you can have both in the same scene/shot when Tailmon is not in Hikari’s arms. You need to plan where to place the digimon in your art, by knowing its size in-series, which form you want to feature in the picture, and where to place them.

For the celebration of Hunters’ final episode 10th Anniversary in 2022, The Digimon Web profile on twitter posted this illust of Gumdramon and Tagiru. Note that Gumdramon is the main star of the composition and Tagiru is behind him, as if he was commanding Gumdramon in a battle.

Now, some personal examples from my own art, to show how I deal with this:

Middle Schooler Daisuke & Chibimon meets Kiyoshiro & Jellymon. The interaction between them is Daisuke and Chibimon looking at Kiyocchi’s hand, which is also the exact arm Jellymon is tied to.

Now, for bigger mons: Know their size and how to place them in the scenario, like Angoramon is here in this official art:

Since Angoramon is bigger than Jellymon and Gammamon, they decided to place him and Ruli behind the other two pairs. You can see this composition shows an interesting dynamic between them and also Jellymon on top of Kiyoshiro’s head.

Remember: the bigger the evolution/form you want to depict with their human partner, the more trickish might be. But don't worry! I trust you to figure it out! You can do it!!

I hope this post can help people, those observations and tips really helped me once and are still helping me when working on digi-stuff ;v;

Who clings to the other during scary movies? Ogong is pretty clingy, but Semo is more of a ramrod-straight terrified stiff. Ogong makes sure to sit on Semo's right side, because during jumpscares Semo grabs Ogong's hand and crushes it. That would be the end of Ogong's hand had he sat on the left side. During psychological horror Ogong sometimes crawls onto Semo's lap and cowers into his shoulder. Who asks weird questions in the middle of the night? Semo and Ogong are both night owls, but Semo usually asks the weird questions. Ogong will take him seriously, then they'll have a productive two hour long conversation about how evolution made penguins flightless. Who falls asleep on the other? Both have done it at one time or another. If Ogong pulled an all-nighter on his computer, he'll pass out clean on Semo. If Ogong gives Semo and lap pillow and plays with his hair, Semo usually drifts off pretty fast. Ogong has photos of dozing Semo that he cherishes. Who eats the other’s uneaten pizza crusts? Duri, obviously. But Semo doesn't like/can't stomach certain foods because of the limited diet he was exposed to in his early years and in Limo's home, so Ogong will eat his portion if need be. Who talks smack while playing video games? Ogong starts it, Semo usually ends it with a sick burn. Sometimes Ogong wins with a not serious, goofy orphan joke he borrowed from Duri. Who would throw the other in the pool? One time, when they were both at the pool, Ogong picked up Semo by the waist and threw him into the water. Semo got his revenge by snatching Ogong's ankles and dragging him in. Who is the better carer when the other is sick? Ogong is the better carer because of his experience with Ondal and feeding picky people, but when Ogong is sick he's way more attracted and clingy to Semo. Who cooks normally? Semo has a wide knowledge of recipes regarding ramen and instant stuff you can throw together in fifteen minutes. Ogong is just the better cook, and was horrified by his boyfriend's diet. Who made the first move? Ogong decided to be jokey-flirty for a bit, but then Semo asked Ogong on a date and Ogong turned into a flaming tomato. Who kissed who first? Semo obtained Ogong's very enthusiastic and clear consent before initiating the first kiss. It was during a movie night and Semo just decided to go for it. Probably could've turned into something more, but Semo stopped at a few kisses and Ogong could tell he was uncomfortable with touching. How often do they fight and over what? They don't fight often, but when they do it's big. It's usually about the other's past, controversial opinions about Semo's dad or Ogong's brother, or on differing opinions about a deep subject. Who’s the first one to fix things after a fight? Unless Semo fucked up badly, he'll hold a grudge as long as he needs to. One sincere apology from Ogong usually fixes things. Who talks about the other more without noticing? Ogong ensures that he and Semo spend as much time as possible, and brings Semo up in every single conversation possible. Not in an obnoxious or annoying way, but like "oh I should get this for Semo" and "this reminds me of Semo". Who steals the other’s clothes? Semo has a veritable mountain of Ogong's clothes mixed in with his own, from all the times Ogong gave him a sweater or a jacket because Semo was cold. One time he accidentally wore Ogong's (slightly oversized on Semo) white-and-orange shirt to the beach, and Duri made some, er, suggestive comments about it. Ogong steals some of Semo's clothes; old things, like a shirt that needs mending or a sweater with a stain on it. Ogong will patch them up and make them new again, then discreetly return them to Semo's closet. Which of their friends is over-joyed shipper trash that they are together? Dingyou ships it the most. She got over Semo and is now just happy that she's witnessing a yaoi relationship out of a BL. Duri makes the most suggestive comments/teasing jokes. Hana is strangely silent about Semo and Ogong's relationship…

I have a fever and am sick in bed, so i am watching cooking shows. One chef just said he sees himself as the frontman of the kitchen cause he is a metalhead and that got me thinking... Yamato actually would be a good chef and it would fit in with his skills and crest (cooking for friends as his love language) and the episode of where his crest actives they work in a restaurant. And that! got me thinking if a career swap au would make sense where for Yamato is the cook and Mimi/Daisuke goes to space? They would make friends with aliens too. (I know Mimi is more then a cook and Yamato was "chosen to go to the moon" because of the threat to evolution, but so could any other digi knight)

Well, first of all: Please rest and get well soon! That's the most important thing!

Second of all, it's basically a canonical fact that Yamato is a good cook and the series displays that at several instances; in early Adventure, he is the one who knows how to fry fish in while contrasting Taichi who doesn't - and later on having Taichi tell Hikari that "Yamato taught me how to make [something like omurice]". There's also the bit in the PSP game in which he promises Koushirou to teach him how to cook eggs - and in general, let's not forget that Yamato regularly swoons over meat in Adventure. Then in 02 he is regularly shown cooking for his dad - and when Takeru comes over, he "threatens" him to make the spiciest curry he'd ever eat (and he probably wasn't lying). Aside from Curry, he also has VERY serious opinions on Ramen and absolutely won't have Taichi mess with it. Both his Curry and his Ramen seem to be quite famous actually, as they had been brought up in BOTH Kizuna...

And in the stageplay (I couldn't find the direct quote, but the indirect ones shall do, everyone praises his food there). And funnily enough, while he is in charge of the cooking, he tries his best to keep Mimi's experiments away from it as far as possible.

In fact, I still think that Mimi becoming a TV cook is mainly based on her having quite "out of the norm" tastes, due to her mother having raised her with quite experimental cooking (eggs with sugar or natto on top or kimchi with whipped cream and strawberries, anyone?).

So in the end, you could say that, while they're both into cooking, Yamato is more of a traditionalist, whereas Mimi prefers experimental cooking. Then you also have Sora, who, as we can assume, taught herself to be "a traditional housewife" (at least as far as Tri is concerned). Daisuke is married to Ramen and ONLY Ramen when it comes to food. As for the rest of the squad, it may really depend - you have Miyako who grew up in a convenience store, Iori who is an incredibly picky eater, Hikari who could live off of sweets alone, Taichi who knows how to do basic dishes, but probably doesn't fully utilize his skills unless he has to and prefers takeout otherwise... And Jyou and Koushirou who probably live off of instant Ramen (Yamato would hit Jyou so hard for that, not even gonna lie) and oolong tea.

Career switches are also always a fun concept! I really do believe people like Mimi and Daisuke could befriend every being in the universe out there - and hopefully won't cause an intergalactic war due to their brashness, so we may have to send Ken and Sora with them for diplomacy reasons (because Taichi is already busy being diplomatic on earth). I absolutely would adore Yamato ending up as a cook though - put him in a suit like Sanji from One Piece and the visual comparison would be perfect already.
