Radio legend Jeremy Mansfield 59 has died
Jeremy Mansfield Photo: Gallo Images/You/Papi Morake Radio legend Jeremy Mansfield has died after battling stage four liver cancer. He was 59. Mansfield’s death was confirmed by his close friend and former colleague, Samantha Cowen, in a statement on Monday morning. The radio personality announced in January that he was diagnosed with liver cancer; in August he revealed his diagnosis was terminal. Radio legend Jeremy Mansfield has died after battling stage four liver cancer. He was 59. Mansfield’s death was confirmed by his close friend and former colleague, Samantha Cowen, in a statement on Monday morning. “This morning a light went out in the world. Jeremy Mansfield passed away just before dawn. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends and boundless love.” Cowen added her own tribute to Mansfield, saying: “Jeremy lived large, he didn’t know how to do small. He loved hard, laughed loud and managed to combine mischief and mayhem with heart and soul. The city was brighter and lighter with him on the airwaves, he changed lives every day. When he wasn’t raising millions for charity, he was raising fresh hell! Under a naughty exterior Jeremy had a huge soft heart. A lot of people got to see and hear that over the radio but he saved his vulnerability for a select few. He was determined that the world be a better and shinier and funnier place and he drove the road to that destination at 1000 miles an hour with no rear view mirror, all of the rest of us clinging on for dear life!” READ THE FULL STATEMENT HERE: The radio personality announced in January that he was diagnosed with liver cancer.  In August he revealed on Facebook that his diagnosis was terminal, vowing to “have as much fun in the time I have left and fulfil as many dreams, big and small, I have in my bucket list”. Two months later, Mansfield made his first appearance on social media since the terminal diagnosis, to thank fans for their well-wishes. He shared an update on his health, saying he has “up and down” days but “thank goodness” the day the video was taken was an “up” day.  Of all the media ventures Mansfield is known for, his presence on radio was most prominent. He started on Capital Radio 604 in 1985, and hung up his headphones for the final time when he left Hot 91.9FM in 2021. At the time of his death, he was the lead host of his YouTube show, Mansfield2day. Mansfield is survived by his daughter, Gabriella. His mother died on 15 August, which was also his 59th birthday. READ MORE | Remembering the master of the mic: A tribute to Jeremy Mansfield Note from the editor: A previous version of this article referred to Jacqui as Jeremy’s wife. The couple were separated. MALEMA PROVES HIS RACISM
Front National SA
The Hot 91.9FM radio host, Sasha Martinengo, was fired from his job on Monday for calling Julius Malema a monkey. The EFF has since announced that criminal charges will also be pressed against Martinengo.
Why? Because he is a white man who used the term “monkey” in reference to Malema.
That is the only conclusion one can reach, for if not: Why was no criminal charges pressed against Collen Maine, the leader of the ANC Youth League when, on 8 February 2016, he said (quoted) “The country will be defended. We cannot allow Julius Malema and his monkeys to run our country amok and turn this country into a banana republic.”
Malema conveniently forgets his own statement in reference to Helen Zille on 4 April 2011: “…you ever seen an ugly woman in a blue dress dancing like a monkey because she is looking for votes?” (Quoted)
Malema is no monkey. He is merely a racist bigmouth.

Hi there! I'm not sure if you guys would know, but recently I've been very interested in photojournalism and I was wondering if smith would have any courses to explore that? Also, does smith have a radio station? Thanks!
Hey! I honestly don’t know too much about the photojournalism at Smith. I would check out the Smith Course Catalog and see if there are classes you are interested in. However, what I do know if that that are definitely excellent photography classes at Smith (Two of my friends are in a class about the History of the Photograph and rave about how incredible it is), and, if Smith doesn’t have a course you are looking for, the rest of the consortium will definitely have it available for you to explore! Additionally, you can also do a Special Studies project (an independent research project for course credit!) on a specific topic if you want.
The radio show, I know more about! Smith’s radio show is WOZQ 91.9FM. Most of my friends actually have a radio show. It is super easy to get involved, you just go to the interest meeting and sign up for a slot. I know one of my friends is doing a “”Psychedelic Espresso Hour”, and some others are doing a podcast where they discuss a topic and then play music related to the topic! You have a lot of artistic freedom at Smith. I hope that answered your questions, and, if not, feel free to message me!

Spotlight on Olwyn Moxhay
Tumblr media
Olwyn Moxhay ‘19J, is from Peaks Island, ME and majoring in Studio Art. At Smith, she is a part of the Museum Volunteer Program, and in her free time she enjoys drawing, reading, and watching movies. She also has a radio show on WOZQ 91.9fm, the Smith College radio station, from 7pm to 8pm on Thursdays, so tune in to hear what this awesome individual is up to on air! (You can listen online at http://mixlr.com/wozq919fm/ )
What inspired your interest in photography? I’ve always been interested in art, but in the past I mainly did drawing and painting. In college I started taking photos on a film camera for fun and really enjoyed the quality that film has. I also took a class in digital photography at my old school with a great professor, which gave me more confidence in my photographic ability. In the summer of 2015 I took a week long darkroom class and learned the process behind film developing and photo printing. Last year I took a year off from school before I transferred, and since I had more free time I started taking photos more regularly, mainly of my family and the island where I live. I like to photograph people, abandoned buildings and spaces, and just whatever’s around me. I’m inspired by photographers I see online, photography books (there are some great ones in the Hillyer library), and my dad, who does alternative process photography as a hobby.
Tumblr media
What led you to initially decide to go to art school in New York? And what was behind your decision to transfer to Smith? I originally decided to apply to Pratt Institute (an art school in Brooklyn) because I liked art and thought it would be cool to live in NYC. At the time I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for in a school, so I decided to go to Pratt when I got in. During my second year at Pratt, I found that the curriculum there wasn’t working for me. There were a lot of required classes that I wasn’t that interested in and I had to choose a major at the end of my freshman year (I chose illustration.) I ended up taking a year off, during which I lived at home and did an internship with a small company in Portland that makes rugs and bags. I decided to apply to Smith because I liked how open the curriculum is and that I could major in studio art instead of picking just one medium, and I liked that I could take classes in other subjects in addition to art. Also, when I visited the Smith campus, I thought it was beautiful and that everyone seemed cool! As I near the end of my first year here, I think I definitely made the right decision.
Tumblr media
How has your interest in photography and art shaped your life? Creating art can be stressful when I feel like I’m not making good art or making enough, but it’s also great to have a creative outlet to express my views on the world and to be able to make something I’m proud of. I think photography specifically has made me more observant of the details of the world around me. In college, the biggest challenge is having time to work on my own art while also being so busy with school. At Pratt I felt a bit burnt out in terms of art because I was doing it every day for school, but at Smith I’m not taking all art classes so I can enjoy drawing and taking photos in my free time, too.
What were your thought processes behind these two photos? Are there stories behind them?
Tumblr media
This is my most recent project I did in photo class. The assignment was “the photograph as object,” so we had to explore the materiality of photos. I found vintage photos of women online and zoomed into their faces until they were pixellated, then I printed the photos and cut them into strips, and then wove them together. I wanted the pixels to mirror the pattern of the weaving, creating a relationship between the digital and the physical. I also wanted to reference weaving as a women’s craft and distorted beauty standards.
Tumblr media
This is a photo I took for a project in Photo I. It was taken on my 35mm camera when I was wandering around Northampton looking for things to photograph for class. I thought it would be interesting to photograph this pile of rubble because it’s something kind of commonplace that’s not usually considered beautiful. I thought that the texture of the concrete, the abstract shapes, and the shadows were interesting.
Are you part of any photography classes or activities on Smith campus? I took Photo I last semester, and I’m currently taking Photo II. Photo I was mostly the basics of photography, and we used the darkroom a lot, which was really cool but very time consuming! The assignments in Photo II are a lot more open and experimental, and we’re encouraged to think outside the box in terms of what photography can be. I knew I definitely wanted to take photo classes at Smith because I never got the chance to do so at Pratt. The photo classes I’ve taken here have been challenging but I’ve learned a lot, and the professors are really knowledgeable.
What are you looking forward to in general at Smith, or in the Gardiner community, this semester? I’m looking forward to Spring Weekend, warm weather, and doing my radio show!
Tumblr media
Don’t forget to Talk To Us up at the top of the page and let us know what you want to see on here, G! And stay tuned for some email updates coming soon about Spring Weekend and the Gardiner Olympics!
