The Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum -also known as Herb of Circe, Wild Lemon, Womandrake) holds the special distinction as being the most famous of all magical plants due to its many ritual and medical uses and the immense amount of mythology it has generated over historical ages.

During the Middle Ages the Mandrake became popular throughout Europe as a magical plant and miracle talisman, capable of curing nearly anything. These roots were thought to be powerful allies who could perform magic for their masters – from attracting love and gaining wealth and good fortune, to warding off misfortunes and evil spells, even to becoming invincible in battle.

The Mandrake was also considered a potent aid to fertility. Historians have determined that the earliest mention of the mandrake refers to its use in Babylon, in the cuneiform tablets of the Assyrians and in the Old Testament as evidenced in chapter 30 of the Book of Genesis where the childless Rachael asks her sister Leah for the loan of the mandrakes which her son had brought in from the fields.It is widely believed that the Old Testament contains multiple references to the ‘love apples’ – the fruits of the mandrake as an aphrodisiac. The first of these instances is again in Genesis, where the scent of the mandrake’s yellow fruits are described as having aphrodisiac properties.

Some evidence exists that the mandrake was used in secret mystical rites in ancient Israel; one of the factors supporting this hypothesis is the significance of the mandrake in Kabbalism as a symbol for ‘becoming One’….

Similarly, in ancient Egypt it appears that mandrake fruits may have been eaten as aphrodisiacs and ancient Greeks also used the mandrake as a sacred love plant.

Ancient Germanic people also often made use of the plant, in particular Germanic Seeresses, who were known for their clairvoyant abilities far outside of Europe, used mandrake regularly as an ally. The modern German name ‘Alraune’ can be traced back to the ancient Germanic term “Alrun”, which translates to ‘all knowing’ or ‘he who knows the runes’…

Mandrake roots have long been used in magic rituals then and still are used today in contemporary pagan traditions such as Wicca and Odinism.

The Mandrake plant is a member of the Nightshade family.The root is hallucinogenic and narcotic. In sufficient quantities, it induces a state of unconsciousness and was used as an anaesthetic for surgery in ancient times. In the past, juice from the finely grated root was applied externally to relieve rheumatic pains. It was also used internally to treat melancholy, convulsions, and mania. When taken internally in large doses, however, it is said to excite delirium and madness.

In the past, mandrake was often made into amulets which were believed to bring good fortune, cure sterility, etc. In one superstition, people who pull up this root will be condemned to hell, and the mandrake root would scream as it was pulled from the ground, killing anyone who heard it. Therefore, in the past, people have tied the roots to the bodies of animals and then used these animals to pull the roots from the soil.

Directions for harvesting a mandrake root in relative safety:

“A furrow must be dug around the root until its lower part is exposed, then a dog is tied to it, after which the person tying the dog must get away. The dog then endeavours to follow him, and so easily pulls up the root, but dies suddenly instead of his master. After this, the root can be handled without fear.”

The following is taken from Jean-Baptiste Pitois’ The History and Practice of Magic:

“Would you like to make a Mandragora, as powerful as the homunculus (little man in a bottle) so praised by Paracelsus? Then find a root of the plant called bryony. Take it out of the ground on a Monday (the day of the moon), a little time after the vernal equinox. Cut off the ends of the root and bury it at night in some country churchyard in a dead man’s grave. For 30 days, water it with cow’s milk in which three bats have been drowned. When the 31st day arrives, take out the root in the middle of the night and dry it in an oven heated with branches of verbena; then wrap it up in a piece of a dead man’s winding-sheet and carry it with you everywhere.”

Mandrake is placed on the mantle to bring prosperity, fertility and happiness to the home, a protector warding off of evil spirits or spells.

Among the old Anglo-Saxon herbals both Mandrake and Periwinkle are endowed with mysterious powers against demoniacal possession. Its human-like forked root was thought to be in the power of dark earth spirits. At the end of a description of the Mandrake in the Herbarium of Apuleius there is this prescription:

‘For witlessness, that is devil sickness or demoniacal possession, take from the body of this said wort mandrake by the weight of three pennies, administer to drink in warm water as he may find most convenient – soon he will be healed.’

It is worn as a talisman or amulet to attract love and repel diseases. As a flying ointment and for its ability to engender shamanic trances.

Mandrake is also said to protect against demonic possession, possibly because it was used by ancient herbalists to sedate manics. To activate a dried root, one must display it prominently in the home for three days, after which it is soaked in water overnight. The water can then be sprinkled on entryways, windows, and people to purify them. The root is now ready for magickal use.

Space:

The force of the teleportation spell dragging them through space and past the wards left the two of them feeling rather dizzy. Karandren tried to sit up. His stomach roiled and the room turned upside down. He lay down again until he felt less like he'd just been thrown into a whirlpool.

Surprise:

Abi looked around for Ilaran or Aderthril. There was no sign of Aderthril anywhere. To her surprise she saw Ilaran sitting near the very bottom of the table. He was at least a century older than he had been when she last saw him. His face, formerly round and chubby like all young children's, was already hardening into the sharp, pointed features he had as an adult. He picked up his cup with the awkward carefulness of a young adult who was going through a growth spurt and was still not used to how long his arms were now.

Melancholy Depressing:

Dinnertime at Lennox House was the most depressing meal Phil had endured since Rachael was alive. Lord Kilskeery was seated at the head of the table with Phil on his right and Mr. Seo on his left. Phil was absolutely sure this was an insult somehow to Mrs. Lennox, who was seated at the other end of the table and hidden from her husband's line of sight by an enormous vase. Three of the other guests were seated firmly in the middle of the table, several seats away from both their hosts. The fourth, the foreign man who was apparently the owner of the gaudy car, sat on Mrs. Lennox's left. Those two spent the whole meal whispering to each other.

Unassuming Reserved:

Framley Manor is surrounded by a large park. If you pretend to be very enthusiastic about fresh air and exercise, and if your lover is already known for being reserved and preferring to spend time alone, you can manage to get some privacy anyway.

Never:

It had never been George's style to attack his victims head-on. He preferred to sneak up behind them or attack them when they were half-asleep. His only weapon now was a hammer. Jane had a crowbar -- a crowbar that now looked much sharper than it had a minute ago. Either he was going crazy or the house had trapped him. One way or another he knew he would die here.

Night:

Siarvin kept a close eye on Ilaran over the days following the possession. He didn't complain of being constantly hungry. He didn't get up in the middle of the night. He didn't lash out at anyone. In fact he seemed to be perfectly normal during the day. But during the night he tossed and turned for ages. Even when he lay still his breathing was too irregular for him to be asleep. After the second night Siarvin decided enough was enough.

Nail:

He lay in the bath until the water was icy cold. Out in the courtyard he heard the clatter of horse-hooves approaching. Ketevan was back. Hariye clambered out of the bath. As soon as he landed on the floor his tail turned back into legs. His shins were covered with tiny cuts from his nails. His fingers were bloody. But he hardly noticed any of that as he pulled his clothes back on without bothering to use a towel first.

Need:

Rusudan whistled and her horse trotted over. She jumped down from the fence and swung herself into the saddle. Holding the reins lightly in her bad hand, she reached into her pocket and took out the knife. "Take this in case you ever need a weapon. Consider it payment for the food," she added when he started to protest.

Kairi was still bedbound for most of the day since the rescue, but she had been recently upgraded from the wheelchair to crutches for moving around with--until her prosthesis was ready, anyway. But despite Crowley insisting they work on it whenever he was awake, she kept making him put the notebook down that he was using to sketch it out, and rest. He came out of that confrontation far worse than she had in her entire month of bekng Basilisk's hostage, in her opinion. She wanted to make sure he was taking the time he needed to recover too, while also respecting their need to keep his hands busy, and build her prosthetic leg himself. As much as she sincerely didn't blame him for the accident, or how long it took them all to find her, she understood how strongly Crowley felt about making things right.

They'd been put in the same room at the medical facility beneath Mack and Rachael's property once Crowley had been kidnapped "discharged" from the Macro City hospital he'd been taken to after his battle with Basilisk. Kairi was reading in bed, trying to keep herself busy to avoid dissociating in front of Crowley, when she heard rustling from the direction of his bed. They had sat up and swung their leg(s) over the side, and was getting ready to pull himself into their own homemade wheelchair to take him to the bathroom. Kairi asked if he needed any help, but of course he said no--he was just going to take a bath, and he'd be back soon.

Kairi was already climbing out of bed herself, reaching for her crutches even as they protested. Like hell she was going to let him try and crawl in and out of the bath by himself, especially while trying to maneuver an oxygen tank around.

"I've been thinking about taking one myself, anways. We can just go together." Was her excuse--which was partially true, anyways. As clean as the room was kept, medical wards always left her feeling like a film of death was settling over her the longer she stayed in one spot. She needed to scrub it off, before she tried clawing out of her skin.

Kairi followed Crowley in to the restroom in the room they were both staying in. She had far more ease of mobility than they did, so once she had started the water and was sat on the closed lid of the toilet, she helped him get undressed first. Even if they protested, she just 'shush'd him and gave him a kiss on the cheek for good measure. She helped to move them from their wheelchair to the edge of the lub, and helped him turn so he could slide onto the chair sat in the warm water safely. Only after Crowley was settled in did she get undressed herself, and join them by sitting on the edge of the tub. She washed his hair for him, and grabbed the mask attached to his oxygen tank whenever breathing became too difficult on his own.

Crowley would start up again at some point, saying they should be the one taking care of her. She was the one who had been held captive for a month, she should be the one being taken care of. Kairi would smile, and turn his face towards hers.

"Once you can move around without the oxygen, I'll let you help me around as much as you want. Right now, just let me take care of you, alright?" She'd lean in, and rest her forehead against theirs.

"I want to do this--you know it makes me feel better to do things for the three of you. Consider it my way of repaying you for rescuing me. Save your energy for the prosthetic you're making for me, and recovering. Okay?" A pause, and a stroke of her thumb across his cheek. "I love you."

Kairi gave Crow a soft, tender kiss to punctuate her words before she let go so she could rise the shampoo out of their hair.
