Happy Pride month to all the gay folks who should still be with us but were lost to AIDS. So many of them had (and continue to have) huge impacts on the world, despite their lives being tragically cut short.
Since this is primarily a Muppet blog, I wanted to take a moment to talk about Richard Hunt.
Tumblr media
Richard Hunt was a gay man and a fantastic puppeteer who started working with Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, and company in 1970 at age eighteen and joined the cast of Sesame Street two years later. While working with the Muppets, he originated the characters of Scooter, Beaker, Statler, Sweetums, and Wayne, but also became the primary performer of Janice and is responsible for the flower child personality she is now known for. He was also known to be a fantastic singer.
But maybe most importantly, he made so many people happy. According the book "Of Muppets and Men" by Christopher Finch, Hunt "seems to get more unadulterated pleasure from performing than anyone else in the organization. When he is not working on camera, he is apt to have Scooter or Beaker or Janice -- anyone -- on his arm for the purpose of entertaining... He makes the crew laugh, jokes with the guest star, clowns for the shop personnel. He is one of the chief reasons for the loose atmosphere that exists around Studio D despite the pressure and the slow pace that are endemic to television production."
Hunt died at age 41 due to AIDS complications. The Muppet Workshop made a panel for the NAMES Project AIDS quilt in his honor. The Richard Hunt Spirit Award is presented every year at the Sesame Street wrap party to the cast member that best honors Hunt's generosity and dedication on set.
Rest in peace Richard. Thank you for the laughs and the smiles, and happy Pride 💛

World AIDs Day
source - Worldaidsday.org
"World AIDS Day exists to shine a light on the real experiences of people living with HIV today, while celebrating the strength, resilience and diversity of the communities most affected. It is a moment to inspire the leadership needed to create a future where HIV doesn’t stand in the way of anyone’s life."

And then these two are just my two favorite artworks related to the AIDs crisis and I wanted to share! Warning! Reading these articles may make you cry a lot.
"What would Haring [have] done, had he lived a more typical lifespan? The artist posed that unanswerable question himself. In 1987, the year he was diagnosed with AIDS, he wrote: 'Amazing how many things one can produce if you live long enough. I mean, I've barely created ten years of serious work. Imagine 50 years.… I would love to live to be 50 years old.' He conceded this 'hardly seems possible.'"
"One of Boskovich’s most tragic works, Feel It Motherfuckers: Only Unclaimed Item from the Stephen Earabino Estate, 1997, is an electric box fan the artist found in his lover Stephen Earabino’s apartment after Earabino’s death from AIDS—everything had been cleaned out (including many of Boskovich’s own possessions) but this. It reads as some kind of evidence, encased within Plexiglas, with a vinyl faux etching of its title. A few circular cutouts in the Plexiglas suggest that the appliance could still be used, lending the case a quality more protective than funereal."

i found my uncle Johnny's class ring today.
I thought i'd left it behind in the great escape. I though it had been lost forever.
it had the most information about him on it. And it turns out I had his name and the year he graduated wrong, which had hampered my quest to look up more information about him.
He died on New Year's Eve, 1993/4. His family doesn't talk about him.
He has a square on the quilt. A Mickey Mouse head sits on a pair of suspenders as the N in his name, and it was made very clearly with love. I don't know who made it for him. I don't know who he loved, who loved him - but i know there was love.
I feared, for most of my life, that he'd died alone, without anyone who loved him, because his family resented him for things outside of his control - and some things within his control, no one's a saint. But they never spoke of him often, only a passing mention here or there. And far be it from me to criticize how others mourn but...
...that's *my* history they kept away from me.
Uncle Johnny, you see, was a gay man. He was a gay man who contracted HIV/AIDS. He was the eldest son (though not the eldest child) in my Nana's family so he was the only one their parents paid to put through college. He went in for an art degree, allegedly got into drugs (which, hey, as a queer art person myself who does a drug from time to time, i get it). He "wasted" his education, according to my Nana, his older sister.
He died at age 41. A year and 8 months after I was born. I have his father's pocket watch (a graduation present to him - i only know it's not his own because the engraving has the wrong initial). I have his class ring. I have a necklace whose parts now are part of other jewelry items, but I have it.
I have the number of the block of the quilt his name is lovingly stitched onto, with the blurry messages of his loved ones so messy in the picture quality that I can't read a single one except for three solid declarations of love. Love love love love.
...I'd like to see if I could find those people who loved him, who cared for him, who held his hand. Who were his friends and his companions. I want to thank them for loving a man I didn't get to know. I want to thank them for taking care of him. For showing him love his family couldn't give because he wasn't what they thought he should be.
I want to see the faces and touch the hands of these people because they are *important*. Because they loved him.
I know nothing about this man but his name, and some details a dedicated web search provided. I don't know what he looked like. I don't know how his voice sounded.
But he's my family. We're related. And I want to carry on his legacy. I want to live and love and be loved.
One day I will track down where I can look at his block with my own two eyes, read the notes left in love without having to parse the pixels. See what the people who loved him thought should be on his memorial - to show the world, the government, that we're here, and we're not going away. That despite everything they tried, John was still loved. And so am I.

LGBTQA history June 27:
1983 – Parades and rallies in cities across the U.S. are dedicated to people living with AIDS. In Chicago, former mayor Jane S. Byrne leads the city’s 14th annual Gay and Lesbian Parade, attended by about 30,000 people. The Centers for Disease Control reports 1,641 AIDS cases and 644 deaths. An estimated 70 percent of people with AIDS are gay.
1987 The NAMES Project displays the first 40 panels of The Quilt from the Mayor’s balcony at San Francisco City Hall. Each panel measured 3’x6′, the size of a human grave, and bore the name of an individual lost to AIDS. The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, often abbreviated to AIDS Memorial Quilt, is an enormous quilt made as a memorial to celebrate the lives of people who have died of AIDS-related causes.
1994 – Deborah Batts (April 13, 1947) becomes the first openly lesbian or gay US federal judge. She is a Senior United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Chapter 187: How to REALLY make SOMEONE WORRY!
After letting out an exuberant burst of laughter, Bai Han Qi finally noticed that inside this private room, he was the only person who dared to wear a wide smile on his face. The remaining three silently stared at him and showed a cold expression as if the temperature of the room was below 20°C. At first, Aunt Zou had every intention to squeeze out a smile along with Bai Han Qi since she too held the same feelings regarding this seemingly “strange” situation. However, once she felt the two pairs of eyes–of the two sitting in front of her–shooting sharp and dangerous daggers in her direction, the smile at the corners of her mouth dies down involuntarily.
At long last the silence that loomed over them for what seem like ages was finally broken when Jiang Yuan spoke up again. Unsurprisingly, the words that crawled out of her mouth were harsh, hurtful and demeaning as they rained down on Bai Han Qi.
“Bai Han Qi, did you bring your brain with you today? Our son is suffering from such a serious problem, yet you still have the guts to laugh!! Should I call you a kindhearted and generous person, or should I call you an idiot? Our son is not experiencing puppy love nor is he cheating on a girl. He is having problems with his sexual orientation. This is a serious mental illness. Don’t you understand any of this at all?”
Although confronted with Jiang Yuan’s harsh accusations, an exceptionally cool air of calmness still played out on Bai Han Qi’s expression. So much so that even the aura around him seems relaxing.
“I believe you should look at yourself. Then, you’ll be able to see the reason for why our son doesn’t like women, right?”
Steam rose above Jiang Yuan’s head at those words. Caught with such fury, her eyes were  immediately sprinkled with an inky crimson color that were soon going to spill out. She points her finger firmly at Bai Han Qi and continues to catechize him. “What do you mean by those words?”
All of a sudden, Gu Wei Ting’s hands slam on the table. Then he himself bellows furiously, “Both of you, stop quarrelling!”
As soon as Gu Wei Ting shouted, no one dared to make a sound.
“Bai Laodi,[1] I’m going to make it clear to you. I will never approve of the two of them being together! Ever. I only invited the two of you here to resolve the problem. Regardless of whether or not you acknowledge the issue, it has already happened. Also, what I have to say is, whether right or wrong, you and I both have this heavy burden in our hearts now.”
Jiang Yuan took out a handkerchief to wipe her tears. She looks as though she was far more broken-hearted than anyone else was.
Even though the meal was already served, no one moved their chopsticks. All the while it was only silence and a divided sense of right and wrong that pervaded the atmosphere between them.
Gu Wei Ting brought his wine cup up and sways it in front of Bai Han Qi’s eyes.
“Bai Laodi, I hope that after you drink this, you can think of a concrete solution to this problem.”
After clinking their glass of wine against the other, both drained the contents in one gulp.
As the proverbs goes, wine has the unique savoir faire to incite a person’s courage. After Bai Han Qi finished his cup of wine, his cheeks immediately flushed red, while his pupils were beaming with giddiness and a youthful vigor.
“In regard to this problem, I would like to say wholeheartedly to let things take their course.”
Gu Wei Ting, “…”
Jiang Yuan, whose tears had dried up, fixed her gaze at Aunt Zou straightaway.
“Didn’t Yin Zi say that you’re like his own mother now? Then, I would like to listen to your opinion as his so-called mother about this matter……”
Aunt Zou’s heart tightens as she unconsciously shoots Bai Han Qi a quick glance. Not long after, she shifts her gaze back at Jiang Yuan. Letting out a sigh, a hint of embarrassment and awkwardness seeps through her smile.
“The truth is, I only intended to be an audience in today’s meeting.”
Hearing such simple words, the answer lacking substance in her opinion, Jiang Yuan became extremely livid; to the point that it nearly drove her to an untimely death.
Looking at the two in front of him and their reactions to what he had just informed them, Gu Wei Ting finally understood everything. The couple he invited today were neither his allies nor his comrades, rather they could be called complete reactionaries instead! No wonder the relationship between their two sons can develop and deepen as swift and violent as it did. As it turns out, there were actually two despicable people aiding their heinous actions!!
“I don’t care how you two educate your children, but I must look after my own son!”
Having said that, Gu Wei Ting proceeded to walk out of the room with a gloomy and dark face. Meanwhile, Jiang Yuan grabbed her bag and glared at the two who remained seated with furious eyes before ruthlessly following her husband out.
—–
During the weekend, Gu Hai woke up before the crack of dawn and conscientiously washed his face and rinsed his mouth. Afterwards, he fixed his hair into a natural and easy style before changing into his some clean clothes. When he walked toward the side of the bed, he could see that Bai Luo Yin was still sleeping peacefully.
As he silently leaned against the bed to watch him for a few more seconds, he blew a few strands of hair sitting near Bai Luo Yin’s eyes and watched as his lashes began to flutter. Lowering his head just a bit more, he whispered softly. “Yin Zi, I’ll head out and buy breakfast first. By the time I come back, you had better be done putting your clothes on! Got it?!”
Instead of replying to Gu Hai, Bai Luo Yin immediately buried his head deeper into the quilts.
Used to this kind of reaction, Gu Hai simply smiled and sweetly kissed Bai Luo Yin’s tinted ear. “I’ll get going then.”
The fuzzy, indistinct voice–that had attempted to pull him out of his comfortable sleep everyday–gradually died down. By the time Bai Luo Yin opened his eyes again, the sun was already high in the sky. There were no familiar scents of breakfast wafting from the kitchen. Nor could Bai Luo Yin see Gu Hai’s tall and muscular figure within his line of sight.
For the entire morning, Bai Luo Yin searched everywhere for Gu Hai. He even took the initiative to call every single person he could reach and yet none of them had any news regarding Gu Hai.
Consumed with terrible anxiety that seemed to stab at his heart repeatedly, his feet brought him to Bai Han Qi’s workplace.
“Was Da Hai taken by his father? Two days ago, his father invited Aunt Zou and I to discuss something. After listening to his opinion, it seems he was very adamant in his disapproval regarding the two of you being together.”
Just as Bai Luo Yin turns around to leave, Bai Han Qi pulls him back with a bit more force than usual.
“Don’t go looking for Gu Hai’s father so recklessly. The military base is not a very good place. If by any chance you manage to provoke someone there, they won’t be imprisoned even if they were to beat you! Or worse, even kill you.”
Taking his father’s words into account, Bai Luo Yin then simply held Bai Han Qi’s hand and began to console  him. “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. My mom is there, so they won’t dare harm me.”
After he finished speaking, Bai Luo Yin left Bai Han Qi’s office hastily with large and vigorous strides.
Bai Han Qi could only sighed heavily as he watched his son walk away.
This kid… there’s completely no way of going back for him anymore!
—–
The moment Gu Wei Ting saw Gu Hai, his first words to him were: “Enlist in the army.”
Gu Hai was utterly shocked and puzzled by Gu Wei Ting’s sudden change of attitude towards him. Because of Gu Wei Ting’s rough method of handling this ‘problem,’ their relationship–that had just gotten better a few days ago–became tense and cold once again. But Gu Wei Ting had already stopped caring about their kinship. In Gu Wei Ting’s judgement, Gu Hai had not taken this short lived sentiment between father and son earnestly either. So even if he treated Gu Hai well, this son of his would only manipulate him for his own gain.
“You should give up on this idea altogether. I’ve said it before, I will never enlist in the army.”
Gu Wei Ting’s complexion metamorphosed, giving off a cold aura that became even more unrelenting. Within seconds, his manner of speaking also turned ruthless.
“Either you enlist or you break up your relationship. You can only choose one!”
Gu Hai’s gaze turns sharp, “This is my life. I don’t need anyone to dictate it.”
“Hehe……” Gu Wei Ting sneered coldly at him, “Then, show me how big your determination is! Didn’t you fearlessly dig a tunnel huh? Starting now, you’d better stay inside that tunnel. If you still can’t understand your problem or get over Luo Yin, then don’t ever hope to get out of there!”
In just a few short hours, Gu Hai had managed to land himself into a dark tunnel. A situation opposite from his warm and cozy room earlier that day.
At the time, in order to finish the passageway as soon as possible, he wasn’t worried about making it wider. Instead when he had it made, there was barely enough room for one person to pass through. As a result, aside from sitting or lying down, it was impossible to stand up from where he was. If he were to try and move, he could only slowly crawl around this uncomfortable and claustrophobic tunnel.
Gu Hai closed his eyes and imagined that the end of the tunnel was Bai Luo Yin’s room. In that room, where he had lay down countless times, his mind’s eye saw Bai Luo Yin laying on the bed, waiting for him, all the while wearing an arrogant yet lovable and awkward countenance. Gu Hai burned every detail of Bai Luo Yin into his memory as he remained there in the darkness. So as long as he could endure staying in this tunnel without a hitch, he could reach Bai Luo Yin’s room. He would then be able to hold him tightly in his arms and accompany him to sleep.
“General.” Sun Jingwei said as he stood at the doorway, hesitant to go inside.
Gu Wei Ting was sitting in his chair, pretending to read the newspaper, but in the truth, none of the words actually registered in his mind.
“Come in.”
Sun Jingwei entered with a depressed face and a dreary cloud of darkness looming over him.
Gu Wei Ting spoke indifferently behind the newspaper, “If there’s anything in your mind, say it directly.”
“Take Xiao Hai out of the tunnel. The temperature at night is very low and the surrounding walls are damp and humid. It’s too harsh for him to stay in there all night long. If by chance, anything bad happens to him and possibly afflicted with frostbite, wouldn’t you be the one with the most regret?”
It was a long time before Gu Wei Ting replied, “Is there anything else?”
Not another word came from Sun Jingwei as he remained still.
“If there’s nothing else, then take an early leave.” Gu Wei Ting stated coldly.
Sun Jingwei’s face looked like he still wanted to speak, but then he held back his words.
Noticing the obvious hesitation, Gu Wei Ting shot him another glance, “Why haven’t you left yet?”
Weighed down with remorse, Sun Jingwei trudged slowly towards the door and began his exit.
Looking at his subordinate’s retreating back, Gu Wei Ting suddenly spoke up, “Next time, it is not necessary to report about his situation. The entrance of the tunnel is in my room. Even if he dies inside, there is no need for you to pull him out.”
Sun Jingwei’s footsteps came to a sudden halt before he finally pushed the door open and silently left the room.
Gu Wei Ting put the newspaper down before his gaze unconsciously swept towards the floor. It has been more than ten hours and within that period of time, Gu Hai has been inside the tunnel having had nothing to eat or drink. Gu Wei Ting never heard him utter a sound or even a groan. Gu Hai always had that extremely stubborn temperament as he continues with his silent opposition.
Meanwhile, Sun Jingwei had covertly lifted the floorboard on his end and squeezed a blanket inside the tunnel.
In reality, he had already snuck some food to Gu Hai during midday and also around the evening. Although there was some concern on his part because he doesn’t know whether Gu Hai had eaten it or not.
While pondering upon this issue for the moment, a phone call from Bai Luo Yin had disrupted his train of thought. He could clearly hear the anxiety in the young boy’s voice informing him that he was currently at the entrance of the military base, yet he was prohibited from entering.
Sun Jingwei merely offer some kind words and advised him, “Yin Zi, it’s better for you to go home. Xiao Hai is alright. He is sleeping in the General’s room right now. In two days, the General has to leave on a mission. This time, the mission will last for two month so he wants to properly accompany his son before his departure.”
Bai Luo Yin still had some more words he wanted to say, but Sun Jingwei had already hung up the call.
At midnight, Sun Jingwei tossed and turned on his bed, unable to sleep. It’s not surprising, who on earth with a conscience would be able to sleep! All the while there is a live person underneath the floor in such a cold place!!
Upon exiting his room, Sun Jingwei noticed that the lamp in Gu Wei Ting’s room was still on. He couldn’t help but to sigh heavily as he watched the flickering of the light for a moment.
In the end, he is your son, who is freezing beneath the floor. Do you think it’s possible to sleep?
Sun Jingwei went for a walk while smoking. He strolled around and around until his feet brought him to the entrance of the base. As a result, he caught sight of a familiar silhouette.
Instead of leaving, Bai Luo Yin was still standing in front of the entrance like a sentry guard on duty. The only difference was that his clothes appeared more flimsy.
Sun Jingwei hastily approached him.
“Son, why haven’t you returned home yet?”
Shaking his exhaustion away, Bai Luo Yin replied in a slightly hoarse voice, “I’m waiting for Gu Hai.”
Hearing those words spoken so softly, with a bit of sadness welling in their tone, Sun Jingwei’s complexion immediately changed. It wasn’t possibly to make out whether he was seething with anger or anxiousness.
“Didn’t I tell you already? The General wants Xiao Hai to accompany him during these two days. You should obediently wait for him at home. What did you come here for huh?” Sun Jingwei walks out and drapes a coat on Bai Luo Yin’s shoulders as he spoke.
Instead of keeping the coat on, Bai Luo Yin returned it to Sun Jingwei. “Uncle Sun, do you think that your words can deceive me?”
For a short while, Sun Jingwei was rendered speechless as a hint of helplessness seeped through his eyes.
“Even if Xiao Hai was being locked up by the General, you can’t be as foolish as to wait here all day long, right? What can you achieve by doing this? If by chance the General comes out and finds you here, he will definitely become even more angry. Listen to uncle, okay? Quickly go home. If there’s really something important that you need to say, it’s better for you to wait until tomorrow morning before coming here again.”
Since Sun Jingwei put it that way, Bai Luo Yin really turned around and began to walk away.
However, before Sun Jingwei could let out a sigh of relief, he saw Bai Luo Yin looking around for a dark corner. Before long, he crouched alone in that nook and hunkered down.
“Ei……”
Sun Jingwei felt lost having run out of words to say to the boy.
These two kids, they really know how to make someone worry!!

Concept
After returning from tartarus and the whole war and shiz, on realizing percy has acute ptsd (idk if that’s a thing for humans, but assuming the effects of nectar and ambrosia and demigods’ natural affinity to quick healing… also Hestia helps coz she’s really into mental health these days ok let’s use our imagination shhh). Everybody is pretty concerned, but Annabeth is worried sick coz she can see he’s not sleeping well and she can’t spend enough time with him what with college and moving and Magnus. So one day she decides to clear her whole schedule to do something with him (nothing like that you dirty minded freakos) but she can’t really think of something special enough. Nico notices and (because of the nagging voice of will in his head telling him to “SHOW [his] niceness coz nobody’s falling for the stone heart emo persona anymore, hun”) asks her what’s wrong and she tells him and he says yeah he’s worried too and stuff.
Then he goes “Hey, so like… yeah, um… remember when I had a crush on Percy?” Annabeth sees his face and just bursts out laughing *oh he’s so smol and awkward*
“Yeah, go on.”
“Well, most people don’t know this… But I’m actually a lot into music and-”
“Everybody knows, Nico. What with your exquisite collection of band shirts. I’m quite jealous actually, how do you know so much music? Because there’s hardly any music ‘shops’ and stuff that’s not littered with unsafe amounts of radio and other waves.”
“Ah, well… Since I spent most of my time alone, I spent much of it collecting vinyls and cassettes. Visiting thrift shops and the sort. And I have some contacts.”
“Yeah, Mrs. O’Leary, lonely ghosts, and old women that run thrift shops.”, Will speaks up, leaning on a tree trunk nearby, with a smug smile.
“Hahaha! Hello, Will.”
“Will! Since when have you been standing there?!”
Will gives her a toothed smile, ignoring Nico, “So let’s go check out the hardcore Mr. Ghost King’s vinyl collection, then.” And before Nico can finish rolling his eyes, Will is leading the way with long excited strides, chattering away with a glint of pride that Nico knows is for his geek ass. He smiles to himself and follows them to his cabin.
The dark room is not much different from what Annabeth was expecting, but it still surprises her. It’s different yet expectable. The cabin is big and cool, and just bright enough to see the colours of the numerous things in the room. There’s really no one way of describing the furniture, forget the room. There was a small, slightly worn out, black leather couch in a corner near the window covered with blinds that were covered in graffiti, half open to let some light in. The two walls next to the couch served as support for stacks of precariously placed books and papers. There were three low shelves/coffee tables overflowing with mythomagic and other cards and board games. A bigger shelf placed against the opposite corner held a grand gramophone with neatly organized vinyles in rows in glass cabinets above and below it. The floor was littered with McDonalds wrappers and Coke- zero bottles (yeah, Hermes sells his fake Coke as real Coke now to mortals. That guy… SMH). Placed on the ground near the glass cabinet is a Casio cassette player and many old-school rectangular lunch boxes full of hand labelled cassettes. The doormat in the room (yes, a doormat at the entrance of the cabin. Inside it.) is a cut out from a lush carpet. Cozy blankets and thin quilts are also strewn on the floor near the walls, a thick, single queen sized mattress on the left wall, just before the window. It takes Annabeth a while to take in all of this.
“Yeah this is why I didn’t want to show you my room. Please, don’t say anything.”
“BUT NIC- ”
“No. Let’s get back to Percy, shall we?”, Nico interrupts, successfully shutting her up, a feat in itself.
“Oh. Yeah. How did we even end up here? We were talking about Percy…”
“Yeah well, i told you about my music because, well…”, Nico eyes Will, gingerly framing his next words. “When I used to… like… Percy-”
“Oh for the sake of gods, I don’t care just say it already!”, Will remarks, rolling his eyes.
Nico quickly takes out a white square envelope from the the upper shelf and plays the song. “Yeah so I had a song… Which made me think of him. I think I want you to have it. It’s by this great band called Coldplay, relatively new. I think you should dedicate it to him.
“Okay I know, all this build up to tell you of a song…”
“I think it’s a great idea. Music speaks volumes in a way nothing else can…”, Will says, his head resting on Nico’s shoulder, eyes closed.
Annabeth agrees, “That sounds so good, Nico. It;s so Percy. But where, how and when do we do whatever it is we’re doing?”
“I know just the thing.”, Will speaks up, still in the same position, just with one eye open and a wide, toothy grin.
“Nico has a karaoke machine?”, Percy inquires on their way over to the Hades cabin that evening.
“Nah, they borrowed it from the apollo cabin for tonight.”
Percy wasn’t surprised at seeing the cabin, he was surprised my not much these days, and Will, Frank, Hazel and a grunting Nico did a pretty good job cleaning up the place too.
The demigods shared laughs together after gods knew how long and drank kool-aid and coke zero, each from a different kind of cup, and fries and doritos they bought from the Hermes cabin while they sand their hearts out. As the night approached its end, Annabeth dedicates this song to Percy and he tears up a bit.
the nights concludes with them and others slow dancing to this song and other songs, courtesy of DJ Di Angelo who himself ended up getting pulled under the table by a certain Will Solace.
Piper has several framed copies of the photoset of them being caught red handed (and red faced) snogging and flustered under the sound desk.

Press Release:
NYU Libraries will display nine panels from the NAMES Project Foundation’s AIDS Memorial Quilt from September 12 to December 15 to close out New York University’s yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The 12×12 foot panels represent a cross section of people lost to AIDS, including members of the trans community, incarcerated individuals, artists and activists who shaped New York’s downtown arts scene, and an NYU student.
The AIDS memorial quilt was started in 1987 by a small group of strangers who recognized the urgent need to document the lives lost to AIDS and help people understand the devastating impact of the disease. Today, the quilt serves as a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic and consists of more than 48,000 individual 3×6 foot memorial pieces sewn together by friends, lovers, and family members.
Since 1987, over 14 million people have visited the Quilt at thousands of displays worldwide. Through such displays, the NAMES Project Foundation has raised over $3 million for AIDS service organizations throughout North America. The last display of the entire AIDS Memorial Quilt was in October of 1996 when the Quilt covered the entire National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Quilt was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and remains the largest community art project in the world.
“These quilt pieces bear witness to our humanity and serve to archive our history. NYU is located in Greenwich Village, just a few blocks from St. Vincent’s Hospital, where many AIDS patients were treated and spent their final days. The intimacy and tradition of the quilt as a symbol of comfort and warmth has a long history. Each quilt is handmade, takes time, offers an opportunity for close reflection, and is a truly unique document” said Marvin J. Taylor, Curator for the Arts at NYU Libraries.
The nine panels at NYU will be shown alongside Violet Holdings: LGBTQ+ Highlights from the NYU Special Collections, an exhibition surveying queer life from the mid-1800s to the present day through a sample of materials drawn from NYU Libraries’ special collections and archives.
Each panel contains at least eight sections for those lost to the pandemic including members of the trans community; incarcerated men and women with AIDS; celebrities such as Keith Haring, Halston, Liberace, Perry Ellis, Rock Hudson, Robert Mapplethorpe, Freddie Mercury, Anthony Perkins, and Rudolf Nureyev; and other artists in New York’s downtown scene.
One panel is dedicated to performance artist Ethyl Eichelberger, artist Sharon Redd, and Dr. Peter Manzzoni, an early AIDS physician and activist, while another commemorates Cookie Mueller, an actress, author, and downtown goddess. The seventh panel includes a section for Larry Levan, a legendary DJ from Paradise Garage who is credited with inventing house music and is also represented in the Violet Holdings exhibition. Panel eight includes sections for filmmaker Marlon Riggs and poet Essex Hemphill. The final panel remembers Paul Fitz Simmons, an NYU student who did not live to see his graduation. One panel in the exhibition was made by the NYU community in 1990 to honor students, faculty, and staff members lost to AIDS.
“The AIDS crisis continues today, but from the early eighties to the late nineties it was especially hard hitting. The trauma to so many, to an LGBT generation, disproportionately felt amongst African Americans and Latinos, needs to be recognized. These quilt panels were made by survivors in memory of those who died from the illness but they also serve as arts activism, as resistance, as a call to not be silent,” said Karen Finley, an arts professor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and co-curator of the AIDS Memorial Quilt exhibition at NYU.
“When people died, they were not given proper burials or funerals. But friends, lovers, family, and community members created this magnificent quilt to recognize and celebrate those who left us too soon. We honor the creation of this archive as an act of agency, illumination, and witnessing—a memento mori,” she continued.
The presentation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at NYU expands upon the mission of NYU Libraries’ Downtown Collection, which documents the explosion of artistic creativity in downtown New York during the 1970s and through the early 1990s that radically challenged and changed traditional literature, music, theater, performance, film, activism, dance, photography, video and other art practices. Many artists commemorated in the Quilt display—including Larry Levan and Cookie Mueller—are also represented in NYU’s special collections and archives.

World AIDS Day – FAM organizes a pletora of operations to raise awareness
Monday, December 1, 2014, was World AIDS Day, an opportunity for people all over the world to unite in the fight against HIV. The date was designed in 1987 and is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning of those who have died of the disease. The focus this year is « Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS free generation.»
On this occasion and celebrating the 10th anniversary of her association, HSH Princess Stephanie, Founder and President of Fight Aids Monaco (FAM) as well as UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador and her team, organized different communication and prevention operations, as well as their traditional fundraising event benefiting their association.
Test in the City
On Monday, November 24, 2014, the operation “Test in the City” marked its 5th year in the Principality in partnership with the Princess Grace Hospital, its Emergency Service, as well as the Monegasque Red Cross. It is an anonymous screening test, free of charge and fast, with results within 10 minutes. In French the kit is known as TROD (Test Depistage rapide a Orientation Diagnostique), equivalent to Rapid HIV Testing in English, and enables to detect anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2 antibodies by a simple finger prick, than can easily be carried out by non-medical people who are nevertheless trained in this procedure.
The main objective of this screening is to keep people informed of the latest scientific advances, learn how to protect oneself and others, and most importantly put an end to stigma and discrimination.
Jungle Fight
Radio Monaco hosted a new episode of Jungle Fight on Thursday, November 27, from 17:00 to 19:00hs, with the live participation of Princess Stephanie and Malher. It is the only monthly radio program dedicated to the fight against AIDS that has been running for over 5 years. The broadcast was an excellent opportunity to review the research and campaigns carried out in the fight against AIDS, and help end up discrimination and false ideas about the disease.
AIDS Memorial Quilt
The 4th edition of the AIDS Memory Quilt (Courtepointes in French), is a work of art on canvas, both individual and collective that honors AIDS victims. In 1987 the “Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt” foundation came up with this initiative to illustrate the devastation caused by the disease. Each quilt is made of 8 canvas sewn to each other, over a surface of 4m x 4m, all bearing the name of a victim and they were all produced by people of Fight Aids Monaco, most of them living with HIV. These quilts were exposed in the entrance of the Oceanographic Museum on Friday, November 28. It is a way of saying that victims will never be forgotten.

FAM Charity Auction
With the generous support of Barclays Monaco a new edition of the FAM Charity Auction took place at the Meridien Beach Plaza Hotel on Monday, December 1, 2014 in the presence of HSH Princess Stephanie accompanied by her brother HSH Prince Albert II. Dame Shirley Bassy, Dmitry Rybolovlev (president AS Monaco), and Kenzo Takada were among the many distinguished guests.

There were 58 works of art (sculptures, paintings, photographs, lithographs) generously donated by the artists or collectors, auctioned under the expert hammer of Maitre Francois Tajan from Artcurial. More than Eur 380,000 were raised in this traditional art auction that will enable the association to continue their actions. The truth is that HIV has not been eradicated yet and there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.
My husband and I had the pleasure to be seating with our friend Michel Merket and Patrick Schaeffer, Treasurer of FAM, and both men were constantly outbidding each other in acquiring beautiful art pieces, but their main objective was to increase the amount collected that evening. Generosity at its best!

Key HIV Facts from WHO
HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 39 million lives so far. In 2013, 1.5 [1.4–1.7] million people died from HIV-related causes globally.
There were approximately 35.0 [33.2–37.2] million people living with HIV at the end of 2013 with 2.1 [1.9–2.4] million people becoming newly infected with HIV in 2013 globally.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the most affected region, with 24.7 [23.5–26.1] million people living with HIV in 2013. Also sub-Saharan Africa accounts for almost 70% of the global total of new HIV infections.
HIV infection is usually diagnosed through blood tests detecting the presence or absence of HIV antibodies.
There is no cure for HIV infection. However, effective treatment with antiretroviral (ARV) drugs can control the virus so that people with HIV can enjoy healthy and productive lives.
In 2013, 12.9 million people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) globally, of which 11.7 million were receiving ART in low- and middle-income countries. The 11.7 million people on ART represent 36% [34–38%] of the 32.6 [30.8–34.7] million people living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries.
Pediatric coverage is still lagging in low- and middle-income countries. In 2013 less than 1 in 4 children living with HIV had access to ART, compared to over 1 in 3 adults.
We are winning the battle, but it is not over yet! Napoleon well said: “Victory belongs to the most persevering”

June 14, 2017: Columns
Patience...
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
As noted many times in this space, one of my favorite people in the whole world was the legendary attorney and judge, the late Max Ferree.
In one column, I admitted to having stolen stories from him for years, and, as his reply, he wrote me a beautiful letter which was vintage Max. In it, he acknowledged my sins, forgave me, then, as only Max could, admonished me to at least “Get them right from now on.” To that end, he mailed me a three pound packet of stories which I have dutifully used off and on for years, and faithfully given credit to Max.
What follows is, to me, the one most special.
In the year 1899, a young daughter was born to Sarah and William Max Ferree in the south mountains of Burke County. She was the fourth child born to Sarah, the other three being named Arthur, Lola, and Mabel. The Ferrees' named this child Patience, perhaps because Sarah died soon after the birth. This child was the pet of the family, even though William Max married Louise Morrison later on, who gave birth to H. Clay Ferree, the new baby of the family.
William Max Ferree was a south mountaineer, who had a small “jot 'em down” store which probably measured no more than 20' x 35'. He had counters and shelves in there together with a big pot-bellied stove. It was a gathering place for south mountaineers—a combination of saw millers, red clay farmers, and whiskey manufacturers on the creeks and branches that left the south mountains of Burke on the way to the Catawba River.
William Max was really proud of a new addition in his store, the same consisting of a paper cutter and a twine yarn holder. Afterward, every package sold there that needed to be wrapped in paper could be, with just the right amount cut with a cleaver off of a big roll. He figured that the combination paid for itself with a little extra charge on the dry goods he sold. One day in 1914, much to his consternation, he found that somebody had whacked off a bunch of paper on the rotary and messed up some string, allegedly in an effort to wrap something. He made inquiry of his entire family but all stood mute as to who has wasted loads of wrapping paper, which he sensed knocked the profit off quite a number of sales. Later on at Christmas, presents were being unwrapped and there for him was a package wrapped in such a fashion that he knew that the giver must of same must have been the culprit, who had messed up his string and wrapping paper earlier. William Max vamped a little bit and started taking the paper off the box and ream after ream came off.
As it did, he became angrier and he bellowed out, “You mean you used all of that wrapping paper, just to wrap this box?” He opened the box and it was empty. That added more fury. “You used all that just to give me nothing?” Then little Patience said, “But Daddy, what I gave you was all my kisses—I blew them all into the box, so it really took a big box to hold them and took a lot of wrapping paper. William Max held it up, hugged her, and took the box and left the room with tears in his eyes. Patience died during the flu epidemic of 1918-1919, Above all others, William Max took it the hardest.
In 1932 the old man passed on and left a Holographic Will, wherein he gave his old red clay farm to his wife Louise for life, the remainder over to his four children, H. Clay, Arthur, Mabel, and Lola. In his hand written will, William Max added this: “There is a box wrapped in paper and string on the upper shelf of our store back in the corner. Place this box in my coffin, because I've told Patience that I would bring the box to her when I came and I want to keep my promise and bring that box full of kisses, so that we might have it, God willing, through eternity.” Signed in the presence of God this the 4th day of March, 1919, by William Max Ferree – (Seal.)
To those interested, William Max's mandate was carried out and the box was placed in the home-made white oak casket, the interior of which was lined with worn blankets, the lower body covered with an old quilt. But the big box with all of the wrapping paper on it was placed across William Max's chest so that he might deliver it in person to Patience.
Max Ferree was born in 1924 to H. Clay and Hattie Poteat Ferree in Burke County, NC.
 Quieting your brain
By LAURA WELBORN
Jancee Dunn asked the question “Can modern day multi-taskers really learn to quiet their minds?”.  I for one have a hard time getting to quiet, I tend to have the TV on for no other purpose but noise as I talk on the phone or check my social media.
I personally had to train myself on another form of meditation- mindfulness. I found the following great strategies to get mindful.  First I realized all you need to do is pay attention to your inner and outer experience in the present moment, without judgment. Ideally, you get mindful in a quiet spot- walking, sitting at your desk or even standing in line.  It’s more important to be away from engaging distraction, such as your computer than it is for your space to be dead silent. Close your eyes or not, and settle your attention on the feeling of the normal, natural breath, where ever its most clear to you- the nostrils, chest or abdomen  See if you can feel one breathe fully, then the next breath.   Dunn states that it is hard for her to clear her mind of wandering but when you find your mind wandering the experts says to notice the thoughts and then just let them go.
Here is the beginning steps to getting focused or centered:.
Minute 1; breathe deeply shutting your eyes can help you focus on the inner workings of your body while leaving them open strengthens your ability to stay serene amid external distractions.  Inhale for a count of four and exhale for a count of six.
Minute 2:  find your natural pace
Stop counting and allow your breathing to fall into an easy rhythm. Pay attention to what your breaths feel like- not overly deep or shallow and compare that with your usual cadence. Tune in to the rising and falling sensation in your body from your belly to your shoulders.
Minute 3:  stay focused. Continue to be aware of your breathing. If random thoughts (work deadlines etc.) pops into your head don't push them out or linger on them.  Instead imagine each one as a harmless floating cloud.  This visualization technique helps you acknowledge your worries without responding to the emotionally.  If a thought still doesn't drift away from your mind, jot it down on a note pad and turn back to your mediation.
Minute 4:  relax Release your focus on your breathing and simply be.  Remind yourself that there is nothing to do, fix or change.
Minute 5:  give thanks. Think about something that you’re grateful for, such as spending time with friends or having the chance to mediate. Then gradually transition your thoughts to how you feel:  the relaxed stat and your heartbeat.  Open your eyes stand up and start your day- cool calm and collected.
Research is showing us that mediating can actually form new and permanent neural connections in the brain.  "Mediation trains your mind to focus on the moment instead of worrying about what occurred in the past or what could happen in the future"  Janet Nima Taylor the author of Mediation for non mediators.
Recognizing value in every life
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
Autism spectrum is a developmental disorder with a range or “spectrum” of differing skill and disability levels. Affected people have social problems—difficulty communicating and interacting with others, and controlling their emotions. Autism has carried a stigma in Israel where, until 2014, schools often expelled students for misbehavior due to a lack of special-education guidelines. Autism also excludes young Israelis from military service, hindering their integration into society and prospects for future employment.
But that’s changing. Israel is pursuing research, treatment and rehabilitation, and addressing the need to broaden social services and housing for about 8,000 people with autism. One of its most stunning breakthroughs is the Israeli Defense Force’s recruitment of autistic soldiers for its Satellite Intelligence Unit. The soldiers spend hours scouring complex satellite images for incremental changes that indicate suspicious objects or movements. The young encoders’ extraordinary visual recall and attention to detail have saved lives.
Created in 2012 by former Mossad Director Tamir Pardo, the program, dubbed “Seeing Beyond,” harnesses the unique brilliance of the autistic mind. About one in three people with autism combine cognitive and social challenges with “profound” skills that psychiatrist Darold Treffert calls “islands of genius.” Autistic “savants” are geniuses in music, the arts, math or memory—like the IDF soldiers in the visual intelligence unit. These soldiers also learn life skills, like using public transportation, to help them overcome social and communication challenges. Other interventions benefit and nurture lower-performing children and adults with autism spectrum. Perhaps Israel’s growing experience can help build bridges with the Palestinians.
A Tradition of Humanitarian Aid
Israel has long helped its Arab neighbors, even enemy combatants, with humanitarian medical aid. In Gaza, “there are no resources, no services, nothing for [autism sufferers],” said Palestinian researcher Mohammed Habash. In the West Bank, stigma and discrimination, poor education and social services, and war compound the problem, said Professor Sarah Dababnah. Local schools turn affected children away, so they stay at home. Families struggle with inaccurate diagnoses from untrained doctors, and no statutory social services or financial support exists. Nonprofits and a few dedicated advocates struggle to fill the vacuum, she said. Parents face emotional distress, with mothers often blamed for their child’s disability. Lacking early intervention, affected children grow up unable to communicate, use the toilet or feed themselves. Many try to hurt themselves or throw destructive tantrums. According to Habash, about 15 percent of parents think autism is a result of war between the Palestinians and Israel. Others blame watching TV, or simply have no understanding what’s wrong with their child.
Recently, Lifegate, an EU-funded, West Bank nonprofit, participated in an autism conference at Ziv Medical Center. Lifegate Director Burghard Schunkert called the cooperation with Israeli doctors, therapists and institutions “very heartening.” It’s important to keep up with the latest research, he said. “That’s why we’re here.”
See beyond the barriers
But while shared research and resources are vital, there’s a thornier issue at stake. The IDF autistic soldiers’ unit is unique because of the mindset behind it—the value Israel places on human life, and its corresponding desire to see people reach their full potential.
But in the Palestinian territories, people are expendable—an attitude influenced by the officially sanctioned mindset of glorifying and inciting death by martyrdom or terrorism. That’s why parents don’t quibble when their children are taught, not to excel and prosper, but to stab and kill Israelis. Muslim reformer Islam al-Behery says a “change of heart” is the key to successfully bring Palestinians and other radical Islamists into the 21st century. If the Palestinians could see value in every life, perhaps they would spend less money supporting terrorism and invest in strengthening the most vulnerable of their own. Surely their hope and future would become better. This humanitarian need is another opportunity for Israel to be a model to its neighbors—by sharing knowledge and resources to enhance the quality of life. Israel is indeed changing the world for the better yet for this they receive little recognition and very little appreciation.
Brighten your day.
A Full Moon On the Island and Amy’s Stories
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
It was to be a full moon night when I arrived on the Island, I had checked into The Cove Bed and Breakfast, as is my normal habit when researching for another Island story.
Sharon is the Inn Keeper and has a good feel for everything happening on Ocracoke. I ask if there were anything interesting going on that night and see said, well Amy is doing the Ghost Tour that blends in a lot of the Island history. An historic ghost tour on a full moon night sounded perfect. Sharon made the call and I was added to the list.
The tour was conducted by ninth generation Ocracoke resident Amy Howard who has been a tour guide for more than 12 years.
There was a good number of people who showed up for the tour which started at 7:15pm. We were all warmly greeted on Howard Street and provided with a selection of mosquito repellent for which we were all grateful.
The tour was full of history that spanned from the settlement of the Island, War time, a variety of colorful personalities and of course stories of the unexplained.
We learned that dreams were taken seriously on the island. A dream of death or disaster concerned everyone. One such dream was had by Fannie Pearl MacWilliams. Born in 1894 she was the daughter of Department store owners John and Elizabeth MacWilliams. The family lived in a large Victorian home not far from the Ocracoke
Lighthouse. This was also a time when traveling from one side of the island to the other was not easy.
When Fannie Pearl was 16 she was a student of and Robert Stanley Wahab, who had returned to the island after going away for higher education. Stanley was only six years her senior and it was not long before they found themselves attracted to each other.
Fannie Peal was an accomplished student and her further education was supported by her parents who decided to send her to a boarding school off the island. When Stanley learned that his sweetheart would be leaving the island he sought employment in the Norfolk area so that he could be near Fannie Pearl. There love continued to grow and they were soon married. Not long after at the age of 18 Fannie Pearl discovered she was with child.
In 1912 the custom of the day was for expecting women to not be seen in public, so Fannie Pearl returned to the Island to stay with Martha Ann Wahab, her mother in law. Stanley continued to work in Norfolk and he sent money to his wife on a regular schedule.
At breakfast on one fall morning Martha Ann noticed that Fannie Pearl seemed sad, however she was unwilling to talk about the reason for her uncommon despair. It as later in the day that Fannie Pearl shared with her mother in law that she had a dreadful dream, in which she had died.  She said that her spirt hovered over her own lifeless body that had been dressed in a solid white dress and placed in a white silk lined white casket.
The casket was then placed on a freshly white painted sailing skiff. On calm waters a silvery white moon suddenly rose against the distant live oaks on the far horizon.
Naturally Martha Ann tried to comfort Fannie Pearl, however it was not easy. The next morning Martha Ann called for upstairs for Fannie Pearl to come down for breakfast, there was no response. She called again and still no response, with concern she took the stairs and opened the door to reveal the lifeless body of Fannie Pearl.
Stanley was notified as soon as possible, he responded with a request to please do nothing until he returned. He quickly made plans to travel and went to find the best casket he could afford for his young bride. With the casket loaded on his pickup he made his way to wait for the mail boat to arrive.
The four-hour trip to the island was with a heavy heart and upon arrival things moved quickly. Fannie Pearl was to be buried on the other side of the water with her parent’s family plot. This was not an easy task and the only way to quickly make the trip was to utilize a skiff. About mid-way across Martha Ann who was in the skiff behind the boat caring the body of Fannie Pearl, gasp as she saw the new silvery moon and realized that the details Fannie Pearl shared about her own death had come to pass just as she described.
As Amy Howard shared this story, I turned and started taking pictures over Silver Lake. It was a full moon night, however the full moon was behind me. It may have been dust, a moth or whatever, but whatever it I was, it was on perfect cue for Amy's Story. Rest In Peace Fannie Pearl.
Another interesting visit to Ocracoke Island.

SJWs Get Shit Done
The wife and I are slowly working our way through the gay rights mini-series When We Rise. It’s slow going partially because our DVR has recorded it in a rather haphazard way, but also because it’s an emotional rollercoaster. In fact, it kind of broke me, but I want to talk about one aspect of it.
I’ve never really heard the term “social justice” used in the context of something like an ABC mini-series. It’s mostly a fringe term that some writers like myself use, but mostly it’s a slur hurled at people by the alt-right. Yet, When We Rise used it extensively in their marketing. That felt wonderful.
It’s hard to describe the conflict around the term SJW or social justice warrior. It was birthed on Tumblr to sneer at some of the more misguided attempts at equality that pop up in that forum, but it quickly became the go-to term for the alt-right to use against anyone ever advocating for minority rights, representation in media, or just generally making the world a less shitty place for anyone but white cishet males. Chan boards and Reddit adopted the concept, the misguided crusader as a mockable entity, and it spread out into the greater web.
There’s grown up this weird cult on the web I call the South Park Boy’s Choir. A core conceit of many South Park episodes is basically “caring is dumb.” With rare exceptions, any advocacy outside of that for free speech is taken as an object of ridicule on the show. Concern for marginalized people, regard for the environment, pretty much any social issue is assumed to be the work of wrongheaded nanny-minds too stupid to realize the real solution is to be cynical and dismissive.
You will see this cult in the comment of any story that decries transphobia, Islamophobia, the gender-based wage gap, or other social issues. It’s a catch-all for the sin of giving a shit used by those who make NOT giving a shit their brand.
It used to bother me. It used to bother me a lot, but after watching When We Rise, it never will again.
The moment the show broke me came in the fifth episode. It involved the AIDS quilt, which by the time the episode takes place has grown to massive size to honor the dead in the AIDS crisis. Cleve Jones is there, and he describes how President and Should-Have-Been-President Clinton appeared out of nowhere to witness the quilt. He guides them through viewing, Hillary asking to see the names of specific friends she has lost, and it’s this pivotal moment in history when after years of letting this epidemic rage the head of the country actually bothered to care about something that didn’t directly affect him.
Then, causally, Cleve mentions over 300,000 Americans have died of AIDS by then.
300,000. 300 Hundred Fucking Thousand. Are you shitting me? Let’s build a spectrum. That’s about 5 percent of the Jews that died in the Holocaust or roughly 100 times those who died on 9/11. Draw your own graph. Or hey, if you want to be thoroughly depressed, watch Lindsay Ellis talk about it while also telling us why Rent sucks dick.
The visit by the Clintons was one small, very small, step towards greater rights for gays in America. It’s perhaps better described as the boot print of a larger army’s march. Yes, it was Bill Clinton who signed DOMA, and yes, I fully believe Hilly Clinton when she says that it was the only way to stave off a constitutional amendment. The backlash against gay rights in the ‘80s and ‘90s was a monstrously huge thing. I absolutely believe that without DOMA there would have been a 28th amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
But all that aside, When We Rise is more compelling because it shows exactly what SJWs do. They chip away at a system, bit by bit, and in spite of violence, terrorism, official condemnation, and familial abandonment to make things better for people who do not represent the power structure. These people bled and died so that others would not have to.
The opposition? Not so much. Every cop that denied women’s organizations a chance to march? They didn’t suffer. They didn’t end up lying in the street nursing a wound. All the moral majority ever got in the way of harm while they were opposing the gay rights movement was a pie in the face.
SJWs get things done. You can look at the bend of history’s arc on gay rights over the last thirty years and see that. They change the world for the better, while armies of armchair moralists dedicated themselves to comforting the comfortable stand in their way for no other reason than an upset of convenience.
The culture war is a war in the Ragnarok sense. The opposition cannot win it, but they can impede it. That mindless South Park Boy’s Choir constantly screaming “fag,” is ultimately no match for those willing to stand in the streets and risk incarceration, abuse or death in the name of a cause.
The moral of the story is: care. Care about the world, and about people who aren’t like you who are in it. The anti-SJW crowd? None of them are ever going to be remembered as anything but a nuisance. Be an SJW. They’re the ones who get movies made about them. Chan lords and Redditors insisting that an unfair world is just a difference of opinion? Their words will disappear. Their house will disappear. Their name will disappear. All memory of them will disappear.
