Sometimes, Magic backfires. A Deaged!Oz AU.

This one hinges heavily on the fact that Ozma gave the maidens their magic to start with. Depending WHICH Ozma did it, there were probably failsafes involved. So, Cinder breaks Oz's shield, but instead of that just killing Oz, her magic interacts strangely with Oz's own and deages him. When he disappears, the staff clattering to the ground, the clothing smoking slightly in a heap, she assumes 'yay, he's dead' and reports the same thing to Salem, because Cinder has this... thing about arrogance and never really bothered to check on the 'corpse'. Qrow comes to find him and finds this child with silver hair, amber eyes and Long Memory, unconscious and gets him the hell out of there. Qrow is sort of panicking at this point, so looks for somewhere to lay low until Oz at least wakes up, if nothing else and ends up on Oscar's farm. Oscar is fanboying about 'a real huntsman' and begging Qrow to tell him everything he knows. Oz wakes up, groaning and holding his head, groping for glasses that shattered in the fight. 'Qrow? Where... where am I? This doesn't feel... right.' 'Just rest, Oz, you're safe for now.'

Percy had invited Qrow to his room for what was meant to be a private conversation, a recap of their recent journey. He wasn't surprised when things escalated to a more... physical nature. Percy had a habit of being caught in Qrow's gravity, always wanting to take another step closer to the often elusive & mysterious man. It was too easy to hold him, terrifyingly so, but it was an instinct Percy could not fight. He was like a personal addiction, one that Percy could not deny. There were so many things Percy wanted to know about him, so many things Percy wanted to do to him. it was something that seemed to be a shared sentiment.

Maybe this is why it was no surprise when he ended up in Qrow's lap, a leg on either side of the man's thighs. It left him dangerously exposed to wandering hands, addictively familiar as they slid off his coat, fumbled with the buttons on Percy's shirt. Perhaps it was selfish, but Percy could not help but revel in the desire for his touch. It's hard to keep track of all that transpires ( Clothes thrown about his otherwise immaculate room, deprived kisses exchanged in breathless desire... & Percy would never be able to satiate his taste for Qrow's scarred skin. It was littered with scars, testaments to the man he had grown to be despite a life hard lived) 

When Qrow takes a hand & places it between Percy's legs ( too gently ), his grip on Qrow tightens. He'd yet to have the privilege of removing his pants & it was torture against his stiff cock. He steadies himself on Qrow & fights the urge to thrash against him. Fingernails dig into Qrow's bare shoulder as Percy feels what can only be described as fire. ( This draws a low moan from the man. Percy often made it a personal goal to escalate those fantastic sounds. ) fire in his stomach that expands to his ribcage, his shoulder blades, and the tips of his fingers.

It causes his hips to dip, his knees betraying him in reaction to the quite intentional touch. He revels in how Qrow's familiar touch feels new, how the man holds so dear in his arms. In moments like this, Percy knew neither of them could hide. They couldn't exist in mysterious pasts, all that existed now were the moments they shared in one another's embrace the feeling of Qrow's breath against his neck was like an incredible truth, the care in his touch speaking more than any words they could imagine.

 'Keep your eyes open. ' Qrow's plea is so gentle, soft as the way calloused fingers take Percy's chin. The care in the action is enough to squeeze the air from Percy's lungs, drawing what could nearly be a whimper out of him. Fluttering eyes open to meet the same alluring gaze that Percy had adored in the first place... ( Is Qrow blushing? Just enough to draw a smirk from Percy's lips )

It makes Percy feel exposed, an exhilarating tightness building in Percy's throat as his usually incessant mind begins to fail him. Percy bites his bottom lip to ground himself, fending off the intensity it layered into the experience. Percy inhales sharply, unable to deny the tangible tension between the two. Percy thinks he is going to kiss Qrow, but he is too slow. Qrow draws him closer, pressing their lips together in a helpless sort of desperation. 

This, he could never get enough of. Percy bucks his hips against his hand or his body or whatever he can get to. All he knows in this wonderful, incredible moment is that he needs Qrow. He needs him or he might just go insane.

No one in Jaune's team or their sister team have ever seen him drunk. Which is why they are surprised when it does happen, he starts acting very romantic towards Pyrrha and flirting in French. Of course Yang better be careful in teasing Pyrrha... because she soon will be on the receiving end of Jaune's language of love.

"This is bad," Lie Ren grimaced at his leader, whose balance seemed wobbly. "Oh, Brothers, this is bad!"

"I didn't want this to happen!" Nora Valkyrie shouts, tears welling up in her eyes. "I just wanted Pancakes & Chicken!!"

"Isn't it Waffles & Chicken?" Blake Belladonna spoke up, flinching when the orange-haired girl hissed at the Cat Faunus.

"PANCAKES ARE BETTER!!" Nora barked, only to be held back by Pyrrha and Ren.

"Can you not?" Weiss pinches the bridge of her nose, "We already have Arc intoxicated--," she points to the hiccuping Jaune Arc.

"55 Bottles of beer on the wall, 55 bottles of beer," the leader of Team JNPR drunkenly sang, "Ya take one down, pass it around," he hiccups, chuckling. "54 bottles of beer on the wall~."

"Welp," Ruby exhaled, folding her arms over her bust. "he's officially Uncle Qrow drunk."

"Weirdly," Yang said, tilting her head to the right. "VB's more graceful than Qrow."

"We really can't let anyone see Jaune like this," Pyrrha says, her brows creased in worry. "Our team's already on shaky ground."

"Pyr," the drunk swordsman shakily approaches, "Pyr, don't worry so much, "Gladiateur glorieux (Glorious Gladiator)." Jaune spoke drunkenly in another language.

The redhead blinks, raising her brows at this. "I'm sorry?" Pyrrha inquires, confused as she felt her cheeks burning.

"You heard me," Jaune reaches out to tip her chin. "ma belle championne (my beautiful champion)~."

Her cheeks became red as her hair, realizing her leader was flirting with her in French. She turns away, her hands on her face and muttering to herself. Pyrrha would be lying if she said she didn't dream of her partner saying sweet things to her, even in his current intoxicated state. As the others look on in shock, Yang playfully jabs the Champion's shoulder.

"Wow," Yang playfully said to Pyrrha, "all it took for Jaune to flirt with ya is to get sauced."

"Yang," the drunk swordsman speaks up, softly touching the Brawler's cheek. "no need to tease her, feu de soleil (sunfire)~."

"H-Huh?" The busty blonde looks at Jaune, shifting her lilac irises to Blake. "What did he just--?"

"He called you sunfire," Blake responds with a small smile, while Yang's cheeks turn crimson as her little sister's cape.

Could you elaborate more on if Summer and gylinda (sorry if that's spelled wrong) were narrative foils? That sounds really interesting!

right so from what little we know about what glynda’s been up to since the fall of beacon is that she is, to all appearances, the ONE member of the inner circle who took a deep breath after ozpin died and kept her shit together. the others:

lionheart, already a traitor, continued to ask how high when salem said jump

ironwood exacerbated the global crisis by withdrawing his troops and closing the borders, thus inflicting deep economic pain on mantle and eroding international trust

qrow imploded and had to crawl back up from rock bottom after his faith in ozpin was destroyed

theodore refused to act until it was almost too late to prevent the crown’s coup because he was preoccupied with the more distant threat of salem

but glynda? she took point on the effort to reclaim beacon academy from the grimm and whenever she wasn’t doing that she was personally rebuilding vale. the last we see of her in v3, she’s on the brink of collapse working herself to the bone in vale. but in ‘after the fall’ she’s holding things together, even if just by her fingernails; she’s on top of it enough to have team CFVY’s academic transcripts and a letter of recommendation ready for them when they decide to apply for transfer to shade. in v4, half a year after beacon fell, port and oobleck seem optimistic about the situation at the beacon (“there is still much work to be done at the school” says busy and difficult, but the mood isn’t dire). and when we glimpse her again in v8, it’s apparent that normalcy has been restored in downtown vale; the dust shop is open for business and the streets outside are not overrun by grimm.

glynda had a hellish nightmare situation thrust into her hands as the de facto new headmistress of a fallen school and the person all of vale turned to for protection and guidance in the wake of this horrifying tragedy, and within a year she managed to pick up the pieces and restore peace and safety within the city, even if she couldn’t take back her school. that is astounding, and especially striking in context with the rest of the inner circle crumbling.

what made her different?

this is speculative. but i think that glynda, like summer rose, is a true believer in the ideals that huntsmen are supposed to uphold: compassion, mercy, cooperation, striving for peace, defending those who cannot defend themself. she trusted ozpin, but unlike the others, her loyalty was not for him but for the things he claimed to believe… so when everything fell apart and the burden of leadership landed on her shoulders, she acted in accordance with those ideals. reached out, brought people together, trusted in those who offered their help, and kept widening the circle until the great burden had been shared between many hands. and after salem razes vale? she does the same. goes to find help.

(i don’t think she told anyone about salem, but rather she put her faith in humanity’s capacity to pull together rather than try to shoulder everything herself. this is in contrast to qrow during the haven arc and ironwood, who bring new people into the loop but see the world as hopelessly divided and riven by distrust.)

if i am right about this and also on the mark with regard to summer rose, this would position them as reflections of each other: both huntresses who believe in and embody the true ideal of what they are supposed to be, both guided in their choices by this staunch moral conviction. summer discovers that she is complicit in enacting a horrific injustice and without hesitation turns around to stand with the victim against even her own family; glynda weathers a catastrophic tragedy and stands tall while every other pillar of ozpin’s circle collapses because she puts herself among the people and inspires them to keep pushing with her. both of them Do What’s Right.

which makes it very narratively compelling to juxtapose them with each other, because they are opposites—fighting on opposite sides—but they are also the same.

furthermore, summer has been holding beacon academy against glynda’s siege for the last year-and-a-half or so; either summer has been able to avoid notice during this time, in which case glynda is due to be hit by a freight train of a moment of realization, or glynda has seen her and knows that her opponent is summer rose—a woman who may once have been her student or her classmate, depending how old glynda is supposed to be, and certainly someone she knew and worked with fourteen years ago when they both believed in ozpin.

if that isn’t grounds for a very personal enmity in the vein of cinder and winter or qrow and clover, i will eat. my. hat. summer was there the night beacon fell—she’s the one who left ruby alive when she scraped cinder off the tower—fighting on the side of the grimm. she’s the one who’s been steadily drawing grimm to the school on salem’s behalf! that is glynda’s home! those were her students who died that night! and in reverse, it is almost certainly glynda who knows the secret of the vault’s location, glynda who remains steadfastly loyal to the divine cause of subjugation-or-annihilation, glynda who upholds the system summer fights to tear down. DO YOU SEE MY VISION… the disciplinarian and the revolutionary…

Me explico semblance funciona con el aura del portador que es su alma en su estado mas puro asi que imagina si un aura ajena al contato con alguien no funsiona bien, como una transfusion de sangre al no ser compatible en lugar de aumentar el rendimieto lo estropea.

Ejemplos: qrow con buena suerte, weiss creando glifos de fuego,hazel siendo ultra sensible,etc.

Let's tally things up, folks!

Ruby's entire depression arc is "resolved" by a one sentence exchange wherein she just... decides she's better now? 'Is this the message?' Ruby asks, on her knees in front of a not at all subtle broken piece of glass. 'That I'm just supposed to give up?' and then literally the next moment she sees Crescent Rose, the weapon she's been flinching from because it represents all the failures she hasn't actually grappled with this season, and decides that depression and suicidal ideation are for losers. Let's go fight a randomly evolved cat!

The group still doesn't care about Ruby's Volume-long struggle. What are you talking about, evil kitty? Ruby's never been confused, or weak, or feeling like she's broken. We're oblivious to all that. That's why we follow her, because we can easily ignore everything that's going on in her life and instead just focus on ourselves. Didn't she have a breakdown a couple of hours ago about having to lead all the time? Should we really be announcing the moment she steps out of the tree that we expect her to be in charge again? ... nah, it's fine!

I guess the overall message is that any and every horrific act is excusable because you're just being yourself? Sorry we doomed a Kingdom and have actively helped Salem in trying to take over the world. The horrors we've enacted are good things though because it means we're being ourselves.

Ruby is conveniently the only Ascended who retains all her memories. Can't have the protagonist undergoing any kind of actual change, after all.

Neo throws herself into the tree despite that going against every iota of her characterization. Will we ever see her again? Who knows.

Is the blacksmith lady Alyx? I still have no idea.

Jaune is made young again, because of course he is. Love that they act like this is some curse he's suffered from - "It's been so long..." - and not an actual life lived across several decades. If I got stuck somewhere for twenty-ish years and then someone tried to magic me back to my 18 year old self I'd be like wtf? No? I'm not a teenager??? Will the show ever acknowledge that Jaune is actually an old man in a de-aged body now? I doubt it, considering this plot-line had no impact on his personality, skill, or outlook.

Also love that the brothers' story is treated like this wonderful tale of growth and exploration. The blacksmith is going on about how amazing it is that you don't know what you'll get when you create something, tone all fond for the demi-gods that have left her world to toy with new ones, and I just wanted one of the characters to start screaming about all the horrors they've caused. They killed an entire population in one fell swoop and have cursed two individuals for funsies, with the entirety of Remanent permanently under threat of annihilation if they don't meet the Gods' ambiguous standards of unity. Oscar didn't fall into the void because if Ozpin had been there he would have gone feral and attacked the blacksmith with his bare hands.

We're heading back to Remnant and Ruby still doesn't know that Jaune killed Penny! Ruby didn't even get her sword back. Or consider her in the tree therapy session. Why was killing her off necessary again? Oh yeah, Jaune angst🙃

We got a "when you're needed" from the blacksmith, so expect that time-skip in Volume 10. Can't wait to see how much important stuff the story skips over...

Also, this is so minor in the grand scheme of everything else, but I YELLED when Summer admitted that she'd lied about the mission. For nine Volumes these characters have been dragging Ozpin for every problem under the sun including, in Volume 7, for the mysterious disappearance of Summer, only for it to turn out that she LIED about where she was going and on whose orders, setting him up to take the fall when she doesn't come back. Who's going to have Qrow apologize to Ozpin for blaming him for years? Who's going to have Ruby unpack that her whole family is made up of liars and she was foolish to think that anyone, including Ozpin, could survive this war with a completely clean record? Hell, who's going to have Ruby simply tell anyone - including her sister - what she now knows about her mother's death? Not the RT writers, I'd wager.

Especially when they gave us a scene of Summer leaving on what she recognizes may be a suicide mission and leaves a token of affection for one daughter but not the other. Summer is Yang's mom too! Yeeeeeaaah the story is really bad about actually writing that.

Overall this Volume just feels like a colossal waste to me. The story ignored most of what was set up in Volume 8, introduced a world it didn't have time to flesh out, threw in an unnecessarily shocking story line about the hero trying to kill herself, 100% dismissed the ramifications of that, reset everyone so that none of the characters have to actually grow or change, and has now implied that all the plot important stuff - the Atlesians' survival in the desert, trying to ally with Theodore, Salem's next attack on Remnant, the development of most of our B Team, etc. - has occurred off screen.

The only thing this Volume accomplished was getting the bees together, which was something we should have had years ago. That admission hasn't changed their dynamic in any way, or introduced new conflicts (remember, no one cares about Ruby's breakdown, including her correct accusation that Yang has cared more about her girlfriend than her struggling little sister). It's just... there, not queerbaiting anymore, thankfully, but that feels like a very low bar to meet.

2+ months later and all I'm feeling is

Okay, so I wanna talk about Jaune a little bit (RWBY volume 9 spoilers warning)

My friend @shera-dnd​ (and others on the internet) have pointed out that in the opening of volume 9, when we see Alyx, we see that there is a second set of footprints already there.

And after today’s episode (v9e5), it seems likely that those prints are Jaune’s, and that he was The Rusted Knight that Alyx writes about.

Also judging from this last episode, Jaune’s been there a while. I had a feeling that this would be the case, and I think a lot of us expected it to an extent. My suspicions that Jaune arrived first was reinforced when we saw Neopolitan arrive so much later than Ruby, despite falling at the same time.

Jaune being the Rusted Knight certainly isn’t surprising, we’ve all been speculating that since we saw the first trailer last July, but I’m not sure many of us were thinking that he was the ORIGINAL Rusted Knight. I figured he would have arrived a few weeks or maybe months before everyone else. But this man’s obviously been here for a few decades at least!

Although, it could have been even longer. We don’t know how time really works in the Ever After, and we have no idea how it affects humans. Do we age at the same rate there? Slower? Faster? 

Back in volume 8, when Ozpin talks about the “Girl Who Fell Through the World” fairy tale, he calls it an old fairy tale. Pure speculation, but if Ozpin is calling it an old fairy tale, then I wouldn’t be shocked it it was a century old at least. If time in the Ever After flows at near the same rate as on Remnant, Jaune’s been there for over a 100 years.

But again, we don’t know how time really works in the Ever After, especially in relation to how it passes on Remnant.

Either way, Jaune’s been in the Ever After for years. His character model certainly has similarities to that of older characters like Qrow, Willow, and Raven, meaning he’s probably well into his 40s at least.

Our poor boy has spent more of his life in the Ever After than on Remnant!

I feel so bad for him. Most of the options feel very bittersweet. Does he go back to Remnant finally, and have to face his teenage best friends as an old man? Does he get de-aged when he returns? And if he does, does he retain his memories? I’m not sure which way is worse. To have gone through that much, only to have it erased feels... hollow. And if he keeps them, he’ll now be a 19 year old with over 40 years of life experience. That’s gotta mess you up.

But what if he stays? What if the Ever After and being the Rusted Knight feels like his calling to him? Could he trust that those feelings were true? Maybe he had come to feel that way as a way to deal with his predicament.

Life in the Ever After feels very... narrow. Which probably works for the denizens of the place, they were made to be content with fulfilling their roles. But Jaune’s human, and we tend to have more robust wants and needs.

Again, he probably pushed a lot of those down or forgot them in order to deal with his situation, but there’s something tremendously sad about him remaining there, content with his narrow existence.

I feel for our poor boy. He’s struggled all his life and had to overcome so much, only for him to be stuck in this position, with mostly only complicated, not great options to choose from.

If you had told me after volume one that someday I would be in near tears at the prospect of Jaune’s fate, I would not have believed you, but here we are. There’s a very real chance that this is Jaune’s last volume, and that his fate may be very bittersweet, and the very thought breaks my heart.

J'ai bien aimé le fait que Yang souhaite parler à Ruby de ce qui s'est passé à Ever After. Et bien qu'elle sent qu'elle n'a pas tout comprit de ce que traversait sa petite soeur. Elle veut l'aider pour éviter que Ruby porte à nouveau tout à ses épaules. Tandis que Ruby comprend qu'elle peut aider demander de l'aide même si elle est la leadeuse de sa team.

D'ailleurs cette conversation nous a permit de confirmer autre chose : Taiyang est vivant mais d'après Qrow, il est en mission importante. Ça renforce la théorie comme quoi c'est lui le gardien de la relique du choix.

I liked that Yang wanted to talk to Ruby about what happened at Ever After. And although she feels she didn't fully understand what her little sister was going through. She wants to help her so that Ruby doesn't have to carry everything on her shoulders again. While Ruby understands that she can help by asking for help, even if she's the leader of her team.

Moreover, this conversation allowed us to confirm something else: Taiyang is alive, but according to Qrow, he's on an important mission. This reinforces the theory that he is the guardian of the relic of choice.

He likes open doors. It was difficult for Percy to catch Qrow's needs as they passed in front of him. He was a hard man to read & Percy had never been the emotional type... So he is thankful for such a blatant need, for such a direct request. He adjusts his glasses, fighting the energy already bubbling in the pit of his chest as he sorts through his own thoughts.

" We ought to get your clothes in cold water soon as we can. " he doesn't hesitate, invading Qrow's space & already working on unbuttoning his shirt. deft hands make quick work of the task, minus any time lost to swatting away any of Qrow's protests. He peels the bloody garment from the other, taking a moment to admire his handiwork. His gaze lingers on the blood-smeared man for what is likely a moment too long. Percy does his best to jump-start his brain, tearing his gaze from Qrow for long enough to think. perhaps he had been a bit premature in taking his shirt, but it wasn't something he could bring himself to regret. especially not now. " I remember we passed a river not too far from here. I've got a bit of vinegar in my bag, it's a good start for these sorts of things. "

He's already turning on his heel, lest he'll be drawn back in. They were losing valuable time, the blood setting into Qrow's clothes with each wasted moment. He could indulge later, but for now, he is determined. Percy was keen to do something in service Qrow's his well-being. Tensions were often high between them... but the fact still stood that he cared for the other as did the desire to show that regard. It just so happened that he was quite familiar with the process of removing gore from clothing. It was something he picked up in his quest to wear every article of clothing he owned until it fell apart. It was a habit, a simple comfort... one he was eager to share with Qrow.
