Facts of the Day: 🐍Burmese Pythons🐍

Scientific Name: Python bivitattus

Length: 16 to 23 feet

Weight: Up to 200 lbs

Lifespan: 20 to 25 years old

Reproduction: They breed in early spring and lay clutches of 12 to 36 eggs on average in March or April. They will stay with the eggs keeping them warm until they hatch in two to three months. 

Diet: Small mammals like mice, rats, and rabbit, but also larger prey like birds, or even pigs and goats!

Habitat: Southern and Southeastern Asia in rainforests, swamps, grasslands, caves, jungles, and a variety of other environments. They are also an invasive species in the Florida Everglades. 

Status: Listed as vulnerable but are critically endangered in some of their native regions. 

Summary: Burmese Pythons are very large heavy snakes, that have a unique way of hunting their prey. They will use their sharp front teeth to grab the prey and then coil around it, tightening it’s grip with each exhale until the animal suffocates. The stretchy ligaments in their jaw allow them to swallow prey five times as wide as their head. When young, Burmese Pythons will spend an equal amount of time in trees and on the ground, however once they get older, they spend the majority of their time on the ground due to trees being unable to support their weight anymore. Alongside this, Burmese Pythons are also excellent swimmers, able to stay submerged for 30 minutes before needing to come up for air.
