tell me about dennis. More particularly...in what situations do you think he's genuinely happiest. Like day to day in the life of Den, when is he really in the zone

TY FOR THE ASK, MY LOVE <3 i always enjoy a excuse to talk about my problematic fav. i have dedicated Much thought to this question.

so, the first thing to say is that i don't think dennis especially enjoys being on his own, especially without anything to distract him. this is for a couple of reasons:

The Trauma. boy has trauma for days. and if personal experience has taught me anything, it's that being alone with your trauma isn't super comfy--especially in den's case, because he hasn't really worked through it at all. i can imagine him being the kind of person to sort of... fall into himself when left alone and without any distractions for too long.

The Insecurity. as i've talked about before, den is a deeply insecure guy with a very fractured sense of self. i feel like it's easier for him to know who he is when he's around others--namely, he is whatever they think he is. there's a line in this fic i really love that i think distills what i mean; it's talking about den having gotten together with a slew of random guys at The Rainbow: "And for that glorious moment, these men are allowed in the presence of his golden light. Lucky them. Lucky Dennis. Because he only exists if you’re looking straight at him."

so, tl;dr: i think to be happy he needs company.

that said! i also think he's at his happiest when he's just with one other person from the gang. when the whole gang's together, everything's loud, rowdy, messy downright chaotic, and i don't think that always makes den Happy. i'm thinking here of when he goes into apparent sensory overwhelm in the family fight ep and also when he says (i think in suburbs) that he's "tired of yelling" (in the most whimpery little voice btw. important detail).

when we see him one on one with mac, dee, or charlie, especially earlier in the series, we see a more.. relaxed? version of him? den with mac at the beginning of 'the gang dines out'? den and dee singing along with music and drinking on the stoop in the welfare ep? den and charlie writing 'the dayman' in charlie's apartment?

so, i guess i think that's when he's at his happiest. when he's with someone--when he's seen--but without the chaos of the whole group being together and driving him up the wall. Them's My Thoughts.
