Humans

Mostly speak English. John and Jade speak no other language. Rose speaks French and Dave knows Spanish but neither of them could hold a conversation in these languages.

Paralleling this, Jane and Jake know no other language while Roxy knows some French and Dirk is fluent in several languages, one of which is Spanish. All of them have an understand of troll languages and the cherub language. Only Dirk is conversational in them.

On Earth C, the humans still mostly communicate in English though they have a better understanding of other species’ languages due to increased contact.

Trolls

There are three troll languages: Lowblood, Highblood and Seadweller. The Lowblood and Highblood languages are on a dialect continuum; the closer a troll is to another troll on the hemospectrum, the more comprehensible their language is. Therefore, a rustblood could understand a goldblood but have trouble with a purpleblood while a purpleblood could understand a ceruleanblood but have trouble with a bronzeblood and so on.

Lowblood language is most similar to African-American Vernacular English on Earth. Not in sound or vocabulary but in grammar for sure. The higher-up on the hemospectrum, the more “complex” language becomes. Indigo-dialect Highblood resembles French grammatically. Seadweller resembles Latin.

Mutants speak a heavily “simplified” creole form of Lowblood, like Jamaican Patois maybe. It is stereotyped as “broken,” “unintelligent” and is associated with criminality and lack of education. 

Lowblood language itself is stigmatized heavily. It’s probably treated as an inferior dialect of highblood rather than as its own language and some lowbloods may refer to it as such. Indigo-dialect Highblood is the “standard” language that all trolls know and so two trolls who don’t understand each other might switch into that language in order to communicate. Purple-dialect Highblood is mostly the same as this but its users use so much slang that the language is socially-devalued.

Seadweller Troll is a fuck. It’s not terribly different than Highblood Troll but its pronunciation is impacted by the fact that its speakers live underwater and it sounds weird. The isolation has also caused a lot of older grammatical features to be preserved so it sounds odd and archaic at the same time.

On Beforus, a strong assimilation program wiped out Lowblood language completely, which is only preserved in slang. Seadweller Troll is still a distinct language.

East Beforans canonically speak Google-Translate Japanese. East Alternians, by contrast, speak actual Japanese.

Others

Carapacian language is split into two dialect groups: Prospitian and Dersite. Overall, they’re not terribly different from each other. People report that Dersite sounds darker and more dangerous than Prospitian but that’s just a reflection of the common view of Dersites.

The Cherubim also have a single language. Hissing carries meaning. A hiss in Cherubim can be used like any other consonant. This is the “native” language of Lord English although he would also know all the other languages of his components as well.

Leprechauns also have a single language. The Felt use this though they’re also capable of communicating in Cherubim.

Lil’ Cal understands all languages but cannot speak. Doc Scratch speaks all languages.
