Review - Jet Set Radio Future on Evolution Magazine Vol.3 (Videogame Magazine) (Italy, 2002)
Translation in English:
(Page 54-55)
DISTRIBUTION - INFOGRAMES
GENRE: ACTION PLAYERS: 1-4 MANUFACTURER: SEGA DEVELOPER: SMILEBIT FORMAT:XBOX MEDIA: DVD-ROM
The concept of love, roller skates and a can of spray paint...
Almost two years ago, Jet Set Radio for the Dreamcast revolutionized the concept of modern video games. It wasn't a sequel, it wasn't a third-person adventure, it couldn't benefit from a character of attraction like Sonic but, despite everything, we were facing a great game. To tell the truth, it wasn't even easy to classify it in a precise genre; Jet Set Radio was an action game, but it had one feature that was increasingly difficult to find in this industry; the originality. Too bad that for most everything has gone unnoticed for the simple fact of running on Dreamcast. Fortunately, the European launch of the Xbox has resurrected a franchise deserving of the attention of the mass (yes: I said mass) of gamers.
The scenario of the action is a futuristic Tokyo of 2024, in which we will dart around with our "fireblade" model skates at high speed, drawing graffiti on the walls and performing acrobatic evolutions on all plausible and "grindable" surfaces. The aim of the mission, in the role of the young skater Yoyo, will be to recruit new members for our gang (after having regularly defeated them) and fight the terrible Rokkaku, a corporation that keeps the city on fire and acts with the complicity of the police local. This will chase us with any means, including tanks and helicopters! The whole adventure will be narrated by Professor K, a rebel DJ at the head of the transgressive private radio Jet Set. After passing the tutorial, disguised as the first level of the game, and having made the acquaintance of Gum and Corn (already present in the Dreamcast version ) we will be ready to dive into the most eclectic and fun challenge of our new career as writers: painting the walls of the city! And it's a real blast running around Tokyo, especially thanks to the beauty of the levels, some of which are truly jaw-dropping. Local traffic, crows perched on the roofs of houses, people in modern clothes who run away when they see us, everything has been created with particular attention to the refinement of detail. Unlike the first episode, in which the graffiti was created through complex rotations of the analog stick, now it is sufficient to press the R key (or the X and Y keys if you are in the air); understandable choice, if you take into account the fact that most of the graffiti you will have to do during the race. Jet Set Radio Future, in fact, is faster and more adrenaline-pumping than the prequel, and the emphasis was placed by Smilebit more on the stunts to be performed with skates than on the drawing of the graffiti. Precisely for this reason, to try to reach the most hidden areas to paint, we will have to learn how best to exploit the livery of our skates to slide (grind) on the most unusual surfaces (telephone wires, railings, stairs and lamp posts) and increase the thrust of our jumps. Furthermore, after collecting ten cans of spray paint, we will be able to activate the turbo boost, useful for having a greater thrust during the stunt phase. This effect is emphasized by the Xbox hardware through a spectacular screen deformation, which lets the gamer's jaw sink a few feet.
If all this were not enough, know that by continuing in the missions we will be able to select new characters, each with their own personal characteristics, from a rich roster that includes twenty-one skaters. JSRF is not only great playability: the originality and immediacy of the gameplay are accompanied by an equally valid technical realization. Graphically, Jet Set is one of the best titles to appear on Xbox so far, if not the best. The three-dimensional engine behind the Sega production is entirely in cel shading: although the environment is entirely polygonal, the less trained eye has the impression of watching and playing a real cartoon. The large number of moving objects on the screen at the same time immediately catches the eye; but the much-discussed slowdowns are very few and, certainly, not such as to negatively affect the gameplay.
The richness of details is astonishing: not only will you be "inundated" by polygons wherever you turn, but also the variety and resolution of the textures are incredible. The whole game is full of touches of class: lighting effects, lens flare used at best, stylistic traits designed to give greater dynamism and speed to the evolution of the characters, very vast and decidedly "alive" environments. And all of this shoots at an almost constant 60fps! Fortunately, Xbox Pai owners weren't penalized by the conversion: JSRF makes use of the 60 hertz mode, the image is full screen, without annoying black bars, and all the dialogues have been subtitled in Italian.
The audio part is no less impressive, with a soundtrack that mixes songs from the Japan and U.S.A versions of Jet Set Radio and adds new ones. The opening track made by Hideki Naganuma (The Concept Of Love) is already an editorial catchphrase, and we wouldn't be surprised if you started humming it habitually, too. If you own a Hi-Fi system with Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, be sure to plug in Xbox and savor the sweet panning of Jet Set Radio Future. If you do not yet own it, you may be satisfied with the more classic stereo mode.
“...the originality and immediacy of the gameplay are accompanied by an equally valid technical realization.”
Some elements of the three-dimensional environments can be destroyed.
The characters are made up of polygons in Cel Shading and animated in a fluid way.

THREE CHEERFUL GUYS OUT OF THEIR MINDS
JET SET RADIO FUTURE SOUNDTRACK
The Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack includes a tracklist created by artists from the American hip hop scene. The Latch Brothers, a group formed by three nice composers (Mike D, Tick and Wag), wrote and composed five tracks of the soundtrack of the title Smilebit. The chosen style varies from rock to hip hop, passing through electronic music that gives the title a greater futuristic atmosphere. In addition, the Latch Brothers have remixed the songs from the prequel (which we recall were played by the likes of Bran Van 3000, The Prunes and BS 2000), resulting in an almost unprecedented musical accompaniment. To top it all off, there are some "extended versions" by other musicians on the defunct Grand Royal label: Bis, Cibo Matto, Scapegoat Wax and Russel Simins. WaveMaster's Hideki has also left his mark on the Xbox version of JSR: by him the opening track "The Concept Of Love". A track that has already entered the Evolution charts ...
The Latch Brothers discuss with Smilebit the possibility of composing some tracks of the Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack.
After an elaborate discussion, the proposal is accepted! In exchange for three copies of the game, the Latch Brothers will produce five unreleased tracks and the remix of those from the last edition. Of course, the final compensation was quite different....
(Page 57)
On the longevity side, Jet Set Radio has some ups and downs: although finishing the game the first time will not engage you for more than 10-15 hours in total, the Sega title is not the classic product that, once completed, you abandon altogether. In addition to the aforementioned characters to unlock, we will have the opportunity to "learn" new graffiti as well as to create new and customized ones. In this way, we will be able to unleash our artistic talent and daub virtual walls with only the limit of our creativity. In addition, multiplayer ensures (if you have friends to play with) a good number of additional hours of gameplay. There are five modes available, supporting up to four players: City Rush, a real speed race; Tagger's Tag, in which the goal is to "tag" your opponent first with spray paint; Graffiti Wars, the "graffiti war," in fact, where the winner will be the player who manages to cover as many walls as possible with their graffiti (you can even draw over each other's graffiti), Flag, a nice variation of the "capture the flag" seen in titles with pronounced shoot-em-up ambitions, and, finally, Ball Hog, a race through the chosen level in the company of a ball that we won't have to let get out of our hands.
The latter mode is even more fun when played "cooperatively" together with a partner to whom you can pass the sphere!
Looking for flaws in a title like Jet Set Radio Future leads one to first analyze the framing system: often, in fact, the virtual camera, in the grip of the speed at which your "skater" travels, tends to lose sight of the centrality of the scene. Other times you will have to move on very narrow surfaces, and, at times, the too-close view will be the cause of easy and deleterious falls. Although in the long run this slight flaw can be frustrating, it will be possible, at any point in the game, to bring the virtual camera view back perfectly behind our backs by simply squeezing the left trigger of the pad (somewhat as happens in Capcom's Maximo). It is actually likely that you will still make it through all the levels without too much trouble.
The difficulty, on the other hand, could and should have been calibrated in a more thoughtful way: overall, Jet Set Radio Future is quite simple to complete and, in some points, it is boring having to repeat the same situation too many times; just think of the fight with the boss of the last level: to get to the platform where he awaits you and to be able to face him, we could take more time than the actual fight requires. Also, the streamlined nature of the graffiti certainly doesn't add to the hostility of the missions. In any case, these are minor flaws, which in no way affect Jet Set Radio Future as a must for anyone with an Xbox and looking for a fast-paced and fun game, but also exceptional to watch and... to listen to! And if you loved the prequel on Dreamcast, you really can't miss it: JSRF is worth at least double its parent! - Ornella Lepre
“... the Sega title is not the classic product that, once completed, is completely abandoned.”
This is the amazing screen warping effect you will witness when you activate the turbo charge
The dialogues are all subtitled in Italian and help to better understand the story.
CONTROL BOX - XBOX
PLUS:
- Breathtaking graphics that are smooth and full of classy touches - Original and funny - Excellent Pal conversion - Numerous multiplayer modes
MINUS:
- Framing system not always perfect - Simplified graffiti system - Long-lived but not infinite
GRAPHICS - 9
PLAYABILITY - 9
LONGEVITY - 7
SOUND - 8
GLOBAL - 8
An original title, fun to play, beautiful to look at and full of touches of class. A must for new Xbox owners

Make it clear what you’re voting for, please! So do something like.
A-2, M-1

S1, B1, L1
The prompts are under the cut and separated by universe!
Block the tag “bingo 5 votes” if this annoys you!
Cops and Not Robbers AU
A: Roman, Logan, and Dee get into a mission that goes wrong in the most hilariously ridiculous way (similar in mood to the Roman-Remus mix-up)
The Dangers of Stereotypes
B: Remus and Patton being lovable goofballs and Logan has to deal with them.
The Prison You Deserve Universe
C: Virgil goes home, but, for the first time in a long time, he's not alone.
D: Virgil bakes cookies for the first time, with a little help. Shenanigains ensue.
Cuffed
E: Virgil gets caught in the crossfire between Remus and Logan and is hurt or drugged or something from their shenanigans. They immediately drop the fighting to look after him.
Road Trips and Everything in Between
F: Teen Janus having a nightmare and Remy comforting him?
G: Janus meeting Virgil for the first time in Road Trips.
H: Janus and Remus apartment hunting.
I: Janus and his series of firsts for the Patton-nappings in post-road trip. The first where he actually knows what's going on, the first where Pat came just for him and not because he was there too/Virgil wanted to get his bro, the first he & Pat are at base and they sneak off together to get Virgil (poor Lo), his first (w/ or w/o V) nabbing of Pat, or the very first Janus-involved one where he's there when Pat comes for Virgil but was not aware this was a thing yet, ect.
Birds of Different Feathers
J: More of Janus and Remus’ relationship
K: When Patton and Virgil got together
L: Virgil’s perspective from Kill Dear when he was first captured. An outside impression of the camp and the conversations with “the enemy” would be very interesting, if it included him and Janus being awkward it would be wonderful
M: Janus' perspective on Logan during the first week of captivity in Kill Dear.
N: Remus maneuvering to ensure people leave Roman out of the shadier parts of military life. Choosing to become the dark hand of the north.
O: Virgil trying to escape to murder Roman during Kill Dear and Janus having to foil his plots.
Labeled
P: Virgil actually gets in trouble in senior year thing from your ‘Labeled is making me sad’ post? (That is the following thing I wrote: Virgil does get in actual trouble at school in his senior year. (The principal is a bit leery of calling Patton at that point.) He and his teacher got into a disagreement in a chemistry lab. It was a perfectly civil and Virgil wouldn’t have gotten into trouble about that. Except… then the words “here I show you” came out of his mouth and… he started a small chemical fire despite his teacher’s vehement protests. Logan was like “…Patton you’re going to have to pick him up because I will not be able to physically restrain myself from high-fiveing the child.”)
Q: Patton's first parent-off/bake-off ect with a member of the pta, maybe during or about a bake sale. (Bonus if some of the ladies are over there admiring the view of his hot af professor husband who's helping set up, which is not at all getting in the way of dealing with Karen and her dang muffins. Honestly.)
R: Logan and Virgil turn training into a real-life game of Fruit Ninja (with or without superpowered lightsabers).
S: Virgil seeing Patton’s home office and the mess that it is for the first time. (Referring to this: Patton also has an office in the house. Well. An “office.” It’s actually a dinning room that they never use. It’s sort of a marital compromise. The rest of the house is clean and organized, but Patton is free to live his natural life in the office. He does actually use it as an office space when he writes papers and stuff. It also has his sewing stuff, painting supplies, and a small television. Papers from 20 years ago lie crumpled in the corners. There are half finished hats from when he wanted to pick up crochet. Missy hides treats in there when she can’t get to the yard to bury them.)
T: Logan’s class while he’s going through the adoption. Moments of memes, their unflappable professor being late or distracted or confused. Preferably with a Roman or Remus Cameo.
U: Virgil and Emile's first appointment
V: Virgil begrudgingly asks Remy for advice for his first date. (Original prompt is a date with Roman but it doesn’t really work so it’ll be a date with a random side character.)
W: Bluebird buys Virgil a sandwich
X: Familial Virgil & Logan & Patton. Word prompt: “sugar,” “shoo fly pie”, and “messy.”
Author’s choice
Y: Virgil sometimes wears his big headphones without actually listening to music so he can hear what other people are talking about when they think he can’t hear them. He accidentally hears them planning a surprise for him and he has to act like he doesn’t know so that he can continue listening in (cuz it’s calming to know that people aren’t talking bad about you at any chance they get) and everything’s super sweet
Z: A dramatic heist thing where Virgil, Patton, and Roman try to steal some Crofters from Logan. Bonus points if Remus barges his way in, insisting that he be the demolitions expert.
aaa: Kid!Virgil makes friends with a raven/crow/corvid
bbb: Diesel Fuel, verse: any/all.

Classic Danger Mouse Brief Summaries.
So I’ve decided to binge watch the original series for the first time in years. Yes, I know I probably should have gone back to it sooner what with my love of the 2015 reboot, but anyway. I’m doing brief summaries of each episode as I go through them so I hope you don’t mind the sudden bombardment of these sort of posts. Got a favourite episode? Tell me :)
Pilot - The Mystery Of The Lost Chord
DM and Penfold go to Scotland where living bagpipes have been stolen by Greenback and 2 crows rather than just Stilleto. DM somehow apparently turned an entire hotel around so a mechanical Loch Ness Monster wouldn’t attack them. Colonel K wants a cup of tea. Penfold playing the trumpet helps save the day.
The pilot does not have what became the regular cast, and there’s no end credits so voice actors for it are unknown. Penfold has a bad Welsh accent.
S01E01 - Rogue Robots
We have our official regular cast of David Jason, Terry Scott, Edward Kelsey and Brian Trueman.
Greenback sends little bizarre robots to attack HQ and DM does some fancy footwork whilst fighting against Greenback’s big cat robot.
S01E02 - Who Stole The Bagpipes
A re-dub of the original pilot. Some plot elements are changed such as DM didn’t rotate the hotel and the monster was just confused on it’s own. Penfold no longer uses a trumpet to save them and DM’s singing can bend steel. I’d like to see him do that now.
S01E03 - The Trouble With Ghosts
Colonel K (being instructed by Greenback) tells DM and Penfold to go on holiday and that there happens to be a nice hotel in Transylvania. Greenback mechanical monster shenanigans ensue. Much better animation and a hint of what feels like Chuck Jones inspired jokes makes this also one of the most amusing episodes so far.
Penfold: “Aargh! Vampires! Help! Help!" *much screaming ensues*
DM (deadpan): “Well done, Penfold. Don’t let them see you’re frightened.”
S01E04 - Chicken Run
Introduction of the original Prof Squarkencluck. The Professor creates a serum to make things bigger which is stolen by Greenback. Cue giant chickens. First time actual humans (or at least their legs) are shown.
*DM and Penfold have a giant egg dropped on them*
DM: “Penfold, we have a problem.”
P: “What’s that, sir?”
DM: “Where can we get a rasher of bacon five yards long?”
S01E05 - The Martian Misfit
Greenback plans to steal the strongest diamond in the world and use it as a drill head. To distract DM and Penfold, he sends a mechanical martian to scare them into believing the Earth is being invaded. Some amusing re-use of animation from the opening title sequence.
P: “Crikey, DM! It’s attacking the Telecom tower!”
DM: “No accounting for taste; I would have picked Nelson’s column.”
S01E06 - The Dream Machine
In a mission to rescue the kidnapped Colonel K, DM and Penfold get trapped in Greenback’s ‘Dream Machine’ and must find their way back out. Visuals include brief homages to Scooby Doo, Yellow Submarine and Terry Gilliam.

100 years ago, this area was known as Black Wall Street. Then it came to a heartbreaking end At the turn of the 20th century, the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was more than 35 city blocks of thriving shops, hotels, theaters and more. And all of them were Black-owned. The district was founded by Black men and women — many of whom were descendants of slaves — and it became known as Black Wall Street. Greenwood was home to doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs. For years, it was a beacon for African-Americans looking to escape the discrimination and violence of the Jim Crow South and live a peaceful and safe life. But even in Greenwood, not everyone was safe. Racial tensions and violence with the neighboring White residents in Tulsa boiled over. And, on May 31, 1921, a race massacre ensued, killing hundreds of Greenwood’s residents and leaving the district in ashes. Black Wall Street had been burned to the ground. Laying the foundation The foundations of the Greenwood District and Black Wall Street were built in the 1830s, when African-Americans first migrated to Oklahoma. Many Black people had arrived as slaves to the Native American members of the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek and Seminole tribes — who were forced to relocate from the Southeastern US to Oklahoma Territory as a result of President Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act. Following the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which called for the abolition of slavery, African-Americans were granted citizenship and allotted plots of land where they could begin their new lives as free men and women. This land allocation led to a boom in all-Black towns, including Greenwood. Between 1865 and 1920, the number of all-black towns and settlements grew to more than 50. Today, only 13 all-black towns exist, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. To help these towns grow and attract new residents, some people took on the role of “boosters,” encouraging the migration of other African-Americans seeking to escape the racial violence of the South. Oklahoma Territory, they would say, was a utopia for opportunity and freedom for Black people. One of these boosters was Edward P. McCabe, a former politician and state auditor of Kansas. McCabe’s dream was to create an all-black state in the Oklahoma Territory that was run by and for Black people. McCabe founded the town of Langston in Oklahoma and a newspaper, the Langston City Herald. He used the publication as a tool to promote his ideas about a black statehood. While McCabe’s dream never materialized, it further fueled the creation of all-black towns in Oklahoma Territory, one of which would become known as Greenwood. The birth of Black Wall Street It all started with 40 acres and a grocery store. Ottawa W. Gurley, better known as O.W. Gurley, was one of Tulsa’s earliest settlers. Gurley, traveled to the oil rich city of Tulsa in 1905 from Arkansas and purchased 40 acres of land, on which he built the People’s Grocery Store and a one-story rooming house. Gurley’s grocery store and rooming house set the stage for the boom in Black entrepreneurial businesses that would follow. Greenwood was soon filled with restaurants, hotels, billiard halls, shoe stores, tailor shops and more. The district’s enterprising residents built their businesses for Black people, who were often barred or treated poorly in the nearby White establishments. Stringent segregation laws had gone into effect after Oklahoma became a state in 1907. This paved the way for Greenwood to become an insular hub for the Black dollar to circulate, historians say. Many of the Black residents earned and spent their money entirely within the confines of Greenwood. The result was one of the most affluent and wealthiest African-American enclaves in the country. Among Greenwood’s most prominent residents was J.B. Stradford. The son of an emancipated slave, Stradford was a lawyer who amassed his fortune through real estate. Among his many properties, he built the opulent Stradford Hotel, complete with 54 rooms and crystal chandeliers, providing a welcoming space for Black visitors. John and Loula Williams built and operated an auto repair garage, a confectionary, and a rooming house. But they were best known for building the famous Williams Dreamland Theatre, which featured silent films and live musical and theatrical revues that regularly attracted Black audiences. Simon Berry started a jitney service that catered to Greenwood’s Black community, who were barred from using White taxi services. He also owned a hotel and started a bus service and, as an experienced aviator, founded his own airline charter. “Greenwood wasn’t just a place, but a state of mind. They had built this place, they had created it. It wasn’t a gift from anyone, it was their own community,” said Scott Ellsworth, a University of Michigan historian and author of “The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice,” who has been working on an effort to discover the unmarked graves of the Tulsa massacre victims.”In Greenwood, everybody knew they were just as good as anyone else.” The faces of Greenwood A dream destroyed But not everything was going well in Greenwood. Tensions between the Black and White residents of Tulsa had started rising. Whites had grown resentful of the Black wealth and success of the residents of Greenwood District, according to Mechelle Brown, director of programs at the Greenwood Cultural Center. On May 31, 1921, everything came to a head. It all started after an elevator encounter between a 17-year-old White woman named Sarah Page and a 19-year-old Black man named Dick Rowland. It was alleged that Rowland had assaulted Page in the elevator, which he denied. But it didn’t matter. News of a Black man’s alleged assault of a White woman spread like wildfire throughout the White community of Tulsa and tempers flared. Black residents rushed to the Tulsa County Courthouse to prevent Rowland’s lynching, while White residents were deputized by the Tulsa Police and handed weapons. A White mob, estimated to include some 10,000 people, descended upon the Greenwood District. Over the next 12 hours, the city of Greenwood experienced an all out assault of arson, shootings and aerial bombings from private planes. By the morning of June 1, 1921, Greenwood had been destroyed. It would eventually be known as the Tulsa race massacre. “The race massacre was a part of American culture and lynching culture of the time. However, the scope and the scale of the violence and destruction was unprecedented,” said Karlos K. Hill, associate professor and chair of the Clara Luper Department of African and African American Studies at the University of Oklahoma and the author of “Beyond the Rope: The Impact of Lynching on Black Culture and Memory.” Buck Colbert Franklin, a lawyer who lived in the Greenwood District at the time, recounted what he witnessed of the massacre in a 10-page manuscript that was found in 2015, “I could see planes circling in mid-air. They grew in number and hummed, darted and dipped low,” he wrote. “I could hear something like hail falling upon the top of my office building. Down East Archer, I saw the old Mid-Way hotel on fire, burning from its top, and then another and another and another building began to burn from their top.” Franklin wrote that he then left his office, locked the door and descended to the foot of the steps. “The side-walks were literally covered with burning turpentine balls. I knew all too well where they came from, and I knew all too well why every burning building first caught from the top,” he continued. “I paused and waited for an opportune time to escape. ‘Where oh where is our splendid fire department with its half dozen stations?’ I asked myself. ‘Is the city in conspiracy with the mob?'” The aftermath All 35 city blocks of the Greenwood District were completely decimated. The Red Cross reported that 1,256 homes and 191 businesses were destroyed and 10,000 black people were left homeless. And it’s believed that as many as 300 people were killed, according to the Tulsa Historical Society and Museum. Survivors were left with nothing after their homes were looted and $2.7 million in insurance claims were denied, according to a 2001 state historical commission report. Another research report out of Harvard University estimated that, in 2020 dollars, total financial losses were between $50 and $100 million. For decades to follow, accounts of what happened in the summer of 1921 would remain largely unknown. But the massacre didn’t mark the end for Greenwood. Black Tulsans rebuilt the community, and by 1942, the Greenwood District was home to more than 200 Black-owned businesses, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. Mabel B. Little, who owned a salon in Greenwood before the massacre, described the rebuilding efforts in her 1990 memoir, “Fire on Mount Zion: My Life and History as a Black Woman in America.” “In the end, we didn’t get hardly any help from the white community. We had to save our own, use what small means we had and cooperate together. … Little by little, we built our businesses back up — beauty shops, our drug stores, grocery stores, our own barbershops, tailor shops, you name it.” But urban renewal and the eventual construction of an interstate highway would lead to another devastating blow to the area. Businesses dwindled and Black families moved further North. Today, only 10 buildings remain in the historic Greenwood District. Tulsa: 100 years later In the 100 years since the Tulsa race massacre, there have been various efforts to rebuild and support Black entrepreneurs in the Greenwood area and address the historical violence that ensued in 1921. In 2018, the search for possible mass graves from the Tulsa race massacre was initiated. There have been at least 10 bodies discovered since the search began. In 2020, a lawsuit was filed by a group of Oklahomans demanding reparations for the 1921 race massacre. The suit is led by a 106-year-old survivor Lessie Benningfield “Mother” Randle, who was a little girl when the massacre took place. The lawsuit is still pending. “Greenwood and North Tulsa Community residents continue to face racially disparate treatment and City-created barriers to basic human needs, including jobs, financial security, education, housing, justice, and health,” the lawsuit alleges. Other efforts underway include a $1 million fundraiser to rebuild Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood Commercial District led by Stevyn Turner and Freeman Culver on behalf of the nonprofit Greenwood Community Development Corporation. According to Turner and Culver, the goal of the fundraiser is to “rebuild the North Tulsa community one business and one job at a time.” Another initiative is Black Tech Street, founded by Tyrance Billingsley II, which seeks to offer education and opportunities to aspiring Black entrepreneurs and innovators in the area. “[Greenwood] … what it did have, and even still has today is an entrepreneurial spirit and resourcefulness. That is what allowed it to grow and become the Black Wall Street of America,” said Hill. “It speaks to Greenwood as a symbol of Black excellence as well as the impressive growth of the community.” CNN’s Allen Kim, Dakin Andone, David Williams, Jamiel Lynch, Sara Sidner and Skylar Mitchell contributed to this reporting. US Criminal Justice System: Racist or Not?
In the documentary The House I Live In, it discusses the disparities inside prison walls in the U.S. by stating that although African-Americans make up only 13% of the US population and 14% of its drug users, they represent 56% of those incarcerated for drug crimes. When people talk about whether or not to label the criminal justice system “racist” they often bring up points about police violence over the past couple of years. What many people overlook; however, is how it is not just the police who are targeting blacks. Every facet of the criminal justice system ties together in shaping how it will protect the people and punish those who threaten them. If one aspect is considered to be racist, the entirety of the system must also be considered racist and the driving forces behind this racism lie within the ways of thinking at the very bottom level which extends to the top and throughout the criminal justice system.
The first level of the criminal justice system is policing. They are the main drivers of the racial disparities seen within the system as they are the ones making the arrests. The criminalization of poverty has been happening for a long time and people don’t always understand its significance in the disparities. If the police focus on making arrests for street crimes, they are going to look at places with high street crime. The problem is that this means they are going to be policing areas where the majority of people are low-income minorities. This is seen within Worse Than Slavery as Oshinsky discusses what happened post-slavery in the South. Even though blacks were freed, they had nothing to their names to help them start new lives. The South then placed laws specifically aimed at targeting blacks like upping the number of fines so they couldn’t pay it or blaming their own crimes on them. The documentary, Central Park 5, also provides examples of how the police have a bias towards blacks and minorities. The five men talk about how the cops basically arrested the five guys they were able to catch and brought them in as suspects to a murder they couldn't even give correct facts about. The groups of teens that had been running around causing trouble all night had to be linked to the crime because they were out “wilding.” The police may not believe themselves to be racist, but by actively choosing to focus their time in minority driven areas in order to garner more arrests and make their departments look good, they perpetuate the stereotype that blacks and other minorities are the reason behind all crime and the prejudice gets fueled further when those minorities are brought into courtrooms.
Merely over-policing minority areas will not lead to a racist system; however, the court system contains its own set of disparities and reasons behind them. In Crook County, Van Cleve talks with prosecutors about what is called the “thin blue line of bigotry.” Prosecutors described how racial bias is adjacent, not within, their culture. Similarly to how defense attorneys rely on prosecutors, prosecutors discuss their reliance on police as undermining justice. Prosecutors are able to draw boundaries to separate themselves from the “real bias.” By not actually admitting that there is also a problem within the court system, they continue to perpetuate the stereotype that racism is all about the police, which is only true in that they are the first tier of the system. Van Cleve mentions in her book that a judge who was asked about the least satisfying aspect of his job answered by saying, “You’re dealing with the underworld, the underbelly of society. Every day you have to fight to understand people. You can barely understand them” (Van Cleve p.62). The use of pronouns like “them” to refer to the defendants and their families as if they are a lesser class and calling them his biggest burden is rhetoric that was used and is associated with the old racism of the South. Van Cleve says how that kind of language was used widely throughout the courtrooms of Cook County.
Imprisonment rate of sentenced state and federal prisoners per 100,000 U.S. residents, by demographic characteristics, December 31, 2014, (Carson, 2015).
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, in 2014 6% of all black males ages 30 to 39 were in prison, compared to 2% of Hispanic and 1% of white males in the same age group (Carson, 2015). In 2010, blacks were incarcerated at six times and Hispanics at three times the rate of whites (Travis, 2017). This is attributed to the length of mandatory prison sentences being lengthened and the over-policing of drug laws, which caused blacks to suffer more than whites despite lower levels of drug use and no higher demonstrated levels of trafficking among the black population (Carson, 2015). The court system does not admit that they are part of the problem and this continues to be cause for concern regarding how the people passing through the courts will be treated since they will not change something if they do not think it is an issue.
Every part of the criminal justice system is integrated into every other one. If people start labeling one part of it racist, then there is no doubt that every other part is racist as well. The police have focused solely on arresting the minorities and while it may not be their fault, they still perpetuate the stereotypes behind blacks and minorities being criminals. The courts have an obvious bias towards wealthy white defendants and have disparities within their conviction rates and lengths going back decades. Despite what people may think, racism is still considered to be the prejudice, discrimination, and antagonism of another race different than one’s own and the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. The U.S. has worked to overcome racism since the civil war and although people believe it doesn’t exist anymore, the bias against people who are not like the majority is ever-present and growing. As Professor Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, says “Nothing short of a major social movement can dismantle this new caste system,”(Quigley, 2011).

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (/duːˈbɔɪs/ doo-BOYSS; February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, writer and editor. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a relatively tolerant and integrated community, and after completing graduate work at the University of Berlin and Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.
Du Bois had risen to national prominence as the leader of the Niagara Movement, a group of African-American activists who wanted equal rights for blacks. Du Bois insisted on full civil rights and increased political representation, which he believed would be brought about by the African-American intellectual elite.
Du Bois strongly protested against lynching, Jim Crow laws, and discrimination in education and employment. His cause included people of color everywhere, particularly Africans and Asians in colonies.
Du Bois’ collection of essays, The Souls of Black Folk, was a seminal work in African-American literature; and his 1935 magnum opus, Black Reconstruction in America, challenged the prevailing orthodoxy that blacks were responsible for the failures of the Reconstruction Era. Borrowing a phrase from Frederick Douglass, he popularized the use of the term color line to represent the injustice of the separate but equal doctrine prevalent in American social and political life. He opens The Souls of Black Folk with the central thesis of much of his life’s work: “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.” The United States’ Civil Rights Act was enacted a year after his death.
