Anime of the day Pride Month: Manaria Friends
This is a short series. It's about two girls who go to a magical academy. Both are princesses in their own way, one a half-dragon and the other is physically normal. This is like a fantasy slice of life. The two girls both struggle with fairly normal feelings: isolation, body dysmorphia, and uselessness. These two find companionship in one another creating a friendship. It’s very clear and straightforward.

I'm starting to catch up on the anime I fell behind on during the end of the semester, and I just watched I'm In Love With the Villainess episode 10.
Manaria Sousse seemed like a nice character for most of the episode. She's polite, honorable, and showed a specific interest in Rae, one of the few people on campus who don't adore her for her impressive magical and physical abilities.
I thought maybe there would turn into a lesbian love triangle. Rae is obsessed with Claire, Claire adores Manaria, Manaria is interested in Rae. A fun dynamic, I thought. Then I got to the end of the episode.
When the conversation turned to Rae's crush on Claire, Manaria decided to rub Rae's nose in the fact that Claire liked her better than Rae, dragging Claire out of her seat and whispering into her ear and saying flirty things while Rae looked on in obvious pain.
I'm willing to give Claire a pass, since she's in denial about Rae's feelings and also didn't start that. Manaria, though...what the frick? Do you feel so threatened by Claire's lesbian maid that you need to assert dominance over her?? You're already a literal princess, Claire already said she'd pick you over Rae, what do you want?

I'm In Love With The Villainess (Manga) Vol. 5 Quick Review
I'm In Love With The Villainess continues to be one of the most fun and exciting series around. The romance and action both are elevated going into volume 5 with a big slice of drama as the stunning princess Marnaria comes into town. This butch woman was Clair's first crush and Rae is hella jealous about it.
The action is really amazingly depicted in this volume, I think the fights were really fun and they weren't over used. The drama was well executed and while I knew what Marnaia's true intentions were the whole time and never doubted my read I still found the way she got to Rae to be very compelling. Aonoshimo's art continues to be a total banger with stunning work on all the characters and amazing use of expressions, action, backgrounds and space to depict the depth of the emotions at play.
This volume touches on queerness again in brief and the moments here are pretty good. I do wish that Rae and Manaria could have had more time to talk about being lesbians and that the word Lesbian saw any use at all here instead of the words queer and straight exclusively but it was for sure more than we get from many manga.
Manaria is my favorite character in the series so far, she is utterly charming and very OP in a way that I just adore. I hope she gets a happy life and a happy ending of her own. Overall, a great climax that I think will be a great ending point for the anime.

Lottie can you explain why anyone would pick Rae over mean hypertalented princess older sister?
Because that's what the story is about.
More seriously speaking, Manaria was never seriously pursuing Claire; she had developed feelings for Rei and was trying to get Claire to recognize her own feelings. Her and Claire actually getting together was never the point, since Claire was already falling hard for Rei, and Manaria recognized that right away, which is why she went so hard into the Rival role. She never really intended to seriously pursue either of them, just act as the catalyst for their romance to finally get off the ground.
Which also explains why she takes on such a supportive role in the follow up novels. Manaria is less a serious suitor for either of them and more of an older sister figure who wants to help those two figure their shit out, so she never actually made serious attempts at getting together with either or both of them once they become a couple, even after the thing that happens near the end of LN5.

You might be the 'Avatar,' but that's not gonna stop me from dominating you!
Manaria makes a bold declaration toward Korra at the beginning of my new fic, entitled "I Won't Let You Dominate Me!: Korra, the Tomboyish Princess, and Steamy Asami".

Book 52! I finished this like ten days ago and then suddenly November is almost over? Bruh
This volume introduces a brief love triangle, a love festival, a duel for love, and moving forward in the romance plotline.
The catalyst came in the form of Princess Manaria. She looks cool, but her fuckboi energy is off the charts.
I ended up not liking her very much?? I wanted to. She's cool and suave but she plays with people's emotions too much. She also projects a bit. Like, you're the one who fucked up your relationship. (Justice for her poor ex.) Leave everyone else alone.
I think it also boiled down to her point of view on Rae's actions and feelings. One, I hate when people assume how the other feels, like that's presumptuous as hell- you don't know a thing about her. And the whole "Oh, you respect her wishes and just want her to be happy? Wow, your love is so half-hearted". Bitch?? What if I reach through the page and strangle you. Some people understand consent and boundaries and respecting their feelings.
Her meddling did make Rae and Claire realize how much they cared. I loved everytime Miss Claire was caught having feelings. I see you.
Ngl, I stared at the proposal scene page for a very long time. I am so in love. How am I supposed to survive until the next volume comes out.
Additional notes-
"I am not a prize to be won!" Agreed! But on the other hand,, dueling for your lady's hand,,,
Manaria is too OP T^T
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finished I'm In Love With The Villainess earlier and. Okay yeah I really liked it. In particular, Claire's shift from "Quit saying that you love me! It isn't funny (I'm unloveable and there's no possible way you actually mean it)," to "Quit saying that you love me! WE'RE IN PUBLIC YOU DUMB GAY NERD (I'm so happy that she really means it and I really like hearing it please keep saying it)," is just, it makes me happy.
Shout-out to Rae for, re Manaria being like, "She's taking her loss weirdly well... was her plan to act evil so that we'd end up together all along...? Okay even if that's true I'm still mad at her, that was so stressful and for what!" And just talking to a literal princess like "Okay yeah I'm ready for you to leave now buh-bye so long won't miss you don't let the door hit you on the way out. My girlfriend now." Girls can be a little bit possessive as a treat.
Shout-out to Misha for STILL being Rae's bestie even through all this gay nonsense. I guess since she's a disgraced noble, she places more value in solidarity? But whatever she's the best, no notes.
Honorable mention to, in the flash-forward vision of the future Rae wants, they have two daughters that have their hair color. So of course I've decided that obviously one of them is trans, it's canon, it's confirmed, magic hrt real, I will not be taking constructive criticism. Good for her.
And I also appreciated how. All their friends, including the Actual Royalty are supportive of them. Like it's mentioned that homophobia is present in their society in general, and Rae was definitely worried about dragging Claire down, but it's good to see that they're among friends for the present.
(Also I desperately want a girl I chose to tell me that I belong to her, which might sound contradictory but listen it makes sense I promise)
Nexy paycheck I'll definitely be buying the rest of the manga or LN or whatever to find out what happens next. Even if it was very silly, these girls gay! Good for them. Good for them. Even though they never got to kiss on screen, but I guess we weren't at Magirevo levels of yuri yet. Which I also need to buy the rest of. But yes whoever tagged that I'd enjoy this, and to my former coworker that recommended the show to me, yes you were 100% correct thank you very much.

re: I'm in Love with the Villainess, there's another, more distant incestuous crush in the story too! Claire (the 2nd main character/love interest) stayed with her distant cousin Princess Manaria as a child, after the loss of her mother, and developed a crush on Manaria after she pulled Claire out of her grief. Even if she ends up with someone else, Claire's feelings still linger for about a decade. She also calls Manaria "onee-sama," an ultra respectful address literally meaning "big sister"
Good to know, Anon. Thanks!

Anne, the forbidden archives, romance, and research
Floating books in the "forbidden archives" in the episode, "Agony of Grea"
Hello everyone! I'd like to talk about two of my favorite anime series: Manaria Friends and Little Witch Academia. I wrote about Little Witch Academia before, but I haven't mentioned Manaria Friends, so I saw this as an opportunity to do so!
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Jan. 30, 2021.
In the Manaria Friends episode "Agony of Grea," Anne travels to the "forbidden archives" of the library to get a book to help Grea. Again, this is a confusion of archives and libraries, just like in Lore Olympus, the Star Wars franchise, and Amphibia. The Wikipedia episode description doesn't help in this regard, declaring: "Grea is suddenly struck with a high fever and Anne goes through the "forbidden" archives of the library trying to find a way to cure her." Some said that this reminded them of their dreams.
The episode begins with a character coming in with "forbidden" books given to her by a librarian at the desk after she told the librarian it was an emergency. Then, Anne, a Princess, runs to the library to find an answer. She travels through the deep bowels of the archives with her servant, what one character calls "the forbidden archives of the library," traveling down hallways, through floating books, magical forests, and stepping through the air with her magic, to continue and find answers, even jumping into the water.
She tries to gather more and more information as she goes forward, as it flows through her hand. They get a shortcut to the library, blasting inside, and scramble to find the medicines to help Grea in whatever way possible.
Anne returns in time and looks at Grea with shock. She learns that Grea was just molting a new tail. While she says that she was unable to do anything to help Grea, and holds the skin of her tail, showing that she still loves her a lot. The final parts of the episode show people at the magic academy trying to fix the damage to the library caused by Anne's entry and Anne tells that Grea's tail looks great, which embarrasses her even more, causing her to leave.
Reference archives in "Blue Moon"
In another of my favorite series, Little Witch Academia, there are two episodes that focus on archives. In the first of these "Blue Moon," Diana travels to the reference archives of the magic academy she attends to learn more about an important legend. The archives are in a hidden crypt and the book she looks at is dusty. The archives is deserted and she is the only one who is there, getting to the book by using her broom with a lantern at the end, as the room is dark. More awful stereotypes. I hate to see them. It makes me sad to see them in an animated series. Don't those producing these series know better?
Reference archives in "Samhain Magic Festival," with Ursula on a broom looking for the right item
Then, there's the episode "Samhain Magic Festival." In this episode, Prof. Ursula travels to the same reference archives, looking for a specific object in order to help Akko but has a hard time finding it. She goes back and finds out from a spirit that the monster is sad because of the Seed of Sadness. Go archives! So, that's a positive!

I'm in love with the Villianess
well, well, well. What an interesting cross section. This was a GL, set in an Otome Game. There's some good and bads. Honestly, the take away for me was just: yeah. I liked it. I'm going to continue to spoil a lot the story; You stop here if you want to check it out blind.
What I liked:
Open homosexuality.
This is a romance comedy,
Openly charming MC pursues Claire, the 'villianess'. She's your typical noble bully, and Rae, the protagonist adores this. a)On this: Claire's backstory really adds to her character. She's intentionally distant after losing her mother as a child on her birthday after a fight. She recognizes her behavior and cruelty as an undesirable character trait but she cant change because that would be softening her emotional walls. A+ design for an anime bully romance.
Some of the fights were neat, the magic world building was lazy but I did get excited for some battles. a)On this: Claire is openly pursued by a slightly older girl she calls "sister". They grew up together and elder "sister"'s family took Claire in, but are not related by marriage or blood. There is a fight between Rae and Manaria, the cool older lesbian, over who deserves to be with Claire; I got excited for this and wasn't disappointed. They did some neat spells, and ultimately Rae loses the right to serve Claire as the set up for the final arc.
What troubled me:
The first actual villians were sibilings, twins I think, who were doing black magic or something so they wouldn't be related so they could be together. Yes. a) on this- The female character in this incesituation is the only maid that Claire grew up with. She's the only maid who stayed with her long enough because of Claire's personality. So when she's revealed to be a perpetrator she is exiled for treason; and just... Yea. together with her brother/lover this maid gets exiled. Gross.
There was a commoner uprising. Which gets mishandled narratively, there's still a king and a kingdom at the end of the season so... Gross.
Yea the love rival is called sister. I don't know the language I watched it in so I would like it to be a mistranslation but I cant say. They did grow up together and she's Claire's "first love". So.. Gross.
Love rival, Princess Marania, admits to raping her maid. There were no consequences and the maid fled her employment and disappeared from Marania's life. But yea. Not remorseful enough for redemption and then not being able to find this girl made Marania sad, so she slept around. That's her backstory. Gross. a) Marania's design is great in all other aspects and I really liked her until she reveals herself as a rapist. This was a betrayal to me. Rude.
Additional Notes:
This was good enough I'd watch it again. Once.

Okay I do NOT understand this worldbuilding. The vast majority of people are homophobic, but all the girls swoon/crush on Princess Manaria...? This doesn't make any sense? I don't care if it's a gag. It isn't consistent with what's already been shown.
#book of kells#verdant liveblog#also i have no idea what i did but while i was typing this post i hit a key combo that changed my tumblr theme color...?????????????#like the colors of the dashboard and stuff#what did i do.

ユニバーサルクラッシュ - Universal Crash
by Pyxilate
A what if scenario: if all these characters from all these fandoms existed in the same universe, but in a desolate, destroyed one that couldn’t handle all of them being in it. Their history changed, and with it, the main characters… Kokoro, who is in love with a tax collector. Nyx, who is in love with Silver Wolf. Catalyst, who may or may not be Catra’s older sister. Arataki Nevou, the girl who wins the heart of Manaria and Philine. Pyxilate, the mermaid princess and archon of light in love with Furina. Shinpi Cheshire, jack of all trades, master of none. Aoi, the secret dragon girl. Dive into a world with everything combined, with its own equally immersive lore. One question remains: will they be able to put the universe back together?

Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and Genius Young Lady
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Otherside Picnic The Executioner and Her Way of Life Vampire in the Garden Yuri is my Job Also in the modern classic yuri bracket, Adachi to Shimamura.
old skool: Burst Angel.

Kuma Kuma Bear, Vexations of a shut in vampire, Witch and the beast (juries out on whats going on here between cursed and the cursee, and the female protag sure does smooch a lot of women.) Blue reflection ray, Manaria friends (was touted as a yuri, personally i feel they went milquetoast and could have been more explicit), RWBY (true meaning of slowburn, waited 10 years but the payoff was worth it). Shy, The Demon Girl Next Door
Best anime recs?
Classic yuri anime that must be watched: Kannazuki no Miko, Strawberry Panic, Simoun, Revolutionary Girl Utena (serie + movie), Sasamaki Koto
Modern classic yuri: Boom Into You, Citrus, Asagao to Kase-san

Magical girl genre: Sailor Moon, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru
Artistic and metaphorical ones: Yurikuma Arashi, Flip Flappers (both highly recommended)
I personally really like comedy yuri so my fav ones are: Yuru Yuri, Kiniro Mosaic and Yuyushiki. I also would add New Game! and Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san
The classics for the Girls and Guns genre: Canaan, Noir (El Cazador De La Bruja and Madlax to complete the trilogy), the most recent one is Lycoris Recoil, a less recent one is Akuma No Riddle
Original anime: Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight, Princess Principal, Izetta: The Last Witch, Kill la Kill
Idol anime: Love Live! (I'm an original love liver so my favs are LL and LLS only)
