because i had to (politely) warn/criticize an acquaintance musher who was out on the trail in 86% humidity and 80F weather running their dogs on a rig when i was there today, i thought now was a good reminder that:

dogs do not cool down effectively when it is more humid

dogs that have previously suffered heat stroke are more at risk of developing it again and will do so more easily than a dog who has never had heat stroke. This ALONE is a great risk to sled dogs.

in the northern hemisphere a majority of dog heat stroke incidents take place in July (which is the month I'm writing this).

most mushers do not recommend running dogs in harness over 50F. No your dogs are likely not an exception. All dogs can develop heat stroke.

HERE is a post with a helpful chart from the Australia Sledding Sports Association about how to determine a safe combination of humidity and heat to run in. (it is in Celcius, but the combination of what we walked in today was easily a 26 on this chart.)

Some mushers CAN train dogs during the summer. Those that are in much more arctic conditions where early am may sometimes be frosty this time of year are clear to do so. Although the Mush with P.R.I.D.E. Sled Dog Welfare Guide has some warnings about the risks running dogs in hot weather poses. Their description of heat stroke even mentions snow which, yes, is true. Sled Dogs can easily overheat even in snowy conditions. Even then though, the summer mushers i see (who are in like...the Yukon...) are regularly monitoring temperatures and not running when it is above 50F.

and look. I've been at the receiving end of weather temperature criticism myself. I once ran Sigurd and Zombie on a like...60F degree evening in summer as a novice and my mentor tore me a new one. I felt bad (and cried lol), but it is what it is and i never did it again. It's also why working with and/or seeking advice from sport veterans is important. I will also never stall or refuse to tell somebody they're posing a risk to their dogs, not only bc i care for their animals well beings, but because mushers pushing dogs like this does reflect badly on the sport.

The one thing i do to make sure i'm aware of how hot my dogs may be besides monitoring the temperatures? I overdress whenever i take them out.

As the beast crashes and disappears in a puff of black smoke, something appears at the bottom. Or rather, several things, actually. The usual heart container, a strange stone and...a Rito!?

"Link, there's someone that came out of that thing!" Tulin cries out. He swore the Rito was somehow familiar, but he was struggling to remember it.

But it wasn't just any Rito. It was one with familiar black feathers, a yellow beak, those beige pants like feathers. And a blue scarf, the mark of a champion chosen by Zelda. Was that...Revali?

i’m trying to catch up with as much dimension 20 as i can before fantasy high junior year, i’m currently on a starstruck odyssey, and can i just say: there is truly no greater example of ally beardsley’s dnd progress than the parallel of ally as kristen applebees willingly taking 36 points of damage, bringing kristen down to 3 hit points as kristen plummets multiple stories due to a failed attempt to use a ribbon dance as a way to fly down 10 stories, and ally as margaret encino willingly taking 11 points of damage, bringing margaret down to 3 hit points so margaret can fall 30 feet from a camera nest, walk up to a giant corn guy, and say “you suck” as all the intrepid heroes look on assuming this to be usual beardsley tomfoolery, only for margaret to walk away & trigger an attack of opportunity which gives murph as barry a chance to push this guy off a ledge & possibly win them the entire encounter & over 1 million credits. INSANE. ally beardsley i’m obsessed with your mind

im very happy im working so many more mermaid events this summer than in the past, truly feel like i’m finally assembling myself into an actual business now, but god i have to figure out a better way to store all my mermaiding stuff. i am just constantly tearing my rooms apart to get it all assembled and then shoved away again each time and my apartment is now just consistently a disaster

As a teen, BJ kept bottle caps in his pockets. He mostly just thought it was fun, liked throwing them off bridges or flicking them between his hands when bored like some people might coins, but they were a nice source of sensory grounding, too. He'd rub his fingers over the smooth sides, or jingle/pat them in his pocket, or dig the pointed ridges into his palms to remind himself where he is and that he is existing.

This would extend to his adult/recovery verses, but I think he'd eventually switch from bottle caps to adorning his keys with all kinds of rings and charms. He'd like the rattle, the way some look in the sun, maybe (in a modern verse) he even keeps a sobriety chip from the hospital. Eventually it would be weighted down with souvenirs from friends, clients, places he's been... Little reminders of surviving that make him happy.

Give BJ little fun things to stick on his key ring. He'd love that.
