Solemn and moving ceremony for the three fallen RCMP officers in my neighbouring city of Moncton today. Wasn't able to attend because of school, but watched some on TV. These 3 heroes left behind 5 children and 3 wives, one of whom is currently pregnant. Has been a sad time for our community and Moncton... such an awful thing never happens in the kind and beautiful  city of Moncton. Will be hard to move on from the horrifying events of this past week.

Such a touching & moving Final Farewell for the Fallen Mounties <3 Don't know what I would do in these families' situation. I cried like a baby & I don't even know any one of them! I commend the wives & family for being so strong during this difficult time. <3

Moncton man charged with police death threats as city preps for RCMP funerals

Moncton man charged with police death threats as city preps for RCMP funerals
A man was charged in Moncton, N.B., on Monday with uttering a threat to cause death to peace officers, but RCMP issued a statement saying it is not connected to their investigation into the shooting deaths last week of three Mounties in the city. A document from Moncton provincial court shows that Jasper John Stam was charged with uttering a threat in Moncton between May 10 and 18. During his appearance, the judge reportedly ordered that Stam have no contact with Justin Bourque, the accused in the shooting deaths of three RCMP officers last Wednesday, at the request of a Crown attorney. The city of Moncton is preparing to welcome thousands of police officers from across Canada as it plans an RCMP regimental funeral service Tuesday for constables Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, Douglas James Larche and Dave Joseph Ross.
If you just look around here today, it won't take you long to see somebody coming up and shaking the hands of an RCMP officer. That is the goodness of Moncton shining through.
Mayor George LeBlanc said before attending a public visitation service Monday
George LeBlanc said he expects between 5,000 and 7,000 police officers will attend the funeral at the Moncton Coliseum, which will be preceded by an RCMP parade. The city has set up at least five other sites where people can gather to mourn due to the number of people expected to attend the funeral. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov.-Gen. David Johnston are also scheduled to attend.

This was a hard few days for Moncton but here we have all of us coming together and mourning the losses of the three RCMPs and all the others who put their lives on the line for us. It was sad yet beautiful all at the same time.

They've caught the killer, the nightmare is over, and a peaceful life can resume in our sleepy city of Moncton.
I have limitless gratitude and admiration for the brave RCMP officers who continue to risk their lives for our safety every single day. They are true heroes and are not often recognized as such.

The Moncton Manhunt is over. Bourque was captured around midnight (AST). My thoughts are with the families of the officers who were shot. This is a difficult time and the beginning of a foreign life. May you have the strength to carry on.

'I'm done': After intense manhunt, accused Canadian cop-killer arrested
A nerve-wracking manhunt came to an end early Friday morning after police apprehended Justin Bourque, the suspect wanted in one of the worst mass shootings in the history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that left three Mounties dead and two others wounded in Moncton, New Brunswick. Bourque, 24, was arrested just after midnight, bringing to a close a harrowing search that lasted nearly 30 hours. On Thursday, Moncton, a city of about 69,000, had been at a virtual standstill with buses pulled off the roads, government buildings shut down and schools closed as police scoured the streets for the heavily armed man.
... Justin surrendered himself and he said, 'I'm done,' and then they arrested him and brought him to my front yard where they had him sprawled on the ground.
—Michelle Thibodeau, witness to the arrest of Justin Bourque
Police, including tactical officers, began their manhunt at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, when they responded to a call about a man walking along a road with what was believed to be a gun. A motive for the shootings was not known, and neighbors of the suspect described a withdrawn man who collected guns and was an avid hunter of birds, deer and moose.
He lost it. The guy lost it.
—Kerry Fitzpatrick, neighbor to Justin Bourque

Moncton shooting: Just the latest tragedy in Canada's rocky gun debate
Canada News
Moncton shooting: Just the latest tragedy in Canada's rocky gun debate
Canadian police have apprehended a man who killed three of their own on Wednesday evening in Moncton, New Brunswick, putting an end to the city's lockdown during the manhunt. But while the immediate crisis is over, the shooting has stirred Canada's ongoing debate over gun control — particularly the repeal in 2012 of part of its national firearms registry. Though often overshadowed by the all too frequent shootings and ensuing debate over gun control in the United States, the history of gun control and gun violence in Canada is just as heated — and sometimes as violent — as that in its neighbour to the south.
The long-gun registry has been one of the most contentious issues in Canada, and its effectiveness remains unknown.
Christian Science Monitor
Prior to 1989, Canadians only had to pass a safety course and carry a license to use a gun. Other restrictions were brief and reactionary: Suspect immigrant groups had their guns taken away during World War II, and militant Quebec separatism led to restrictions in the 1960s. But in December 1989, a young man entered a Montreal engineering school with a legally obtained rifle. He shot 28 people, claiming he was “fighting feminism.” He killed 14 women and himself in just 20 minutes, in what has become known as the "Montreal Massacre," sparking tougher gun laws in Canada. Five months after the shooting, the Conservative party introduced a bill to require stringent license screening, a ban on military-grade weapons, and penalties for unsafe storage.
