Hanson’s Pastry, 35201 Newark Blvd, Unit B, Newark, CA
Tumblr media
Interesting Chinese/Beijing style pastry and frozen food shop. The shop has a few freezers and refrigerators. They sell frozen dumplings, frozen pancakes, refrigerated buns/bao (plain, cabbage, chive, pork, beef, etc.), glutinous rice dumplings, popsicles imported from China (in elaborate shapes), and flaky pastries (sweet and savory). The sign said since 2011 but the Newark location is new. They make their own bao, dumplings, pastries, etc.
The pastries are similar to the ones you can find at Beijing's oldest pastry shop. They're also similar to Shanghai style flaky pastries (aka crab shell cakes).
Savory flaky pastries (3 for $7.99): one of these pastries is a pork moon cake. It’s hard to find pork moon cakes. My father used to get them in Shanghai. He enjoyed the pork moon cake. I saw that it had a lot of pork.
Steamed pork bao (4 for $7.99): Big bao with thin, slightly sweet skin and a big ball of ground pork. The filling was a bit too salty (too much soy sauce?) but good enough to make me want to try other varieties.
Service was friendly. They even had free samples. Credit cards accepted.
4 out of 5 stars.

February’s full Moon is a “Micromoon” this year. Think of this term as the opposite of a “Supermoon.” It simply means that the full Moon is at its farthest point from Earth (not the nearest point).
The explanation behind February’s full Moon name is a fairly straightforward one: it’s known as the Snow Moon due to the typically heavy snowfall that occurs in February. On average, February is the United States’ snowiest month, according to data from the National Weather Service. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver, who had visited with the Naudowessie(Dakota), wrote that the name used for this period was the Snow Moon, “because more snow commonly falls during this month than any other in the winter.”

Imbolc is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of spring. Most commonly it is held on January 31 – February 1, or halfway between the winter solstice & the spring equinox. The holiday is a festival of the hearth, home, a celebration of the lengthening days & the early signs of spring.
The word "imbolc" means "in the belly" and refers to the pregnancy of ewes at this time of year. The term "oimelc" means ewe's milk. Around this time of year, many herd animals give birth to their first offspring of the year or are heavily pregnant & as a result, they are producing milk. This creation of life’s milk is a part of the symbolic hope for spring.
Imbolc is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and it is associated with important events in Irish mythology. It has been suggested that it was originally a pagan festival associated with the goddess Brigid and that it was Christianized as a festival of Saint Brigid, who herself is thought to be a Christianization of the goddess.
Some use Imbolc to celebrate the longer days which herald the return of Spring & The Goddess's recovery from giving birth to The Sun (The God) at Yule. The God & The Goddess are children symbolizing new life, new beginnings & new resurrections.
Related festivals:
• Groundhog Day-  Is a tradition observed in the United States & Canada on February 2 of every year. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day & sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den & winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.
While the tradition remains popular in the 21st century, studies have found no consistent association between a groundhog seeing its shadow & the subsequent arrival time of spring-like weather.
•St. Brigid's Day- 1 February. It was originally Imbolc, the first day of spring in Irish tradition. Because Saint Brigid has been theorised as linked to the goddess Brigid, some associate the festival of Imbolc with the goddess. St. Brigid is the patroness saint (or 'mother saint') of Ireland. She is patroness of many things, including poetry, learning, healing, protection, blacksmithing, livestock & dairy production. In her honour, a perpetual fire was kept burning at Kildare for centuries.
A recent campaign successfully established her feast day as a national holiday in 2023.
• Chinese New Year- (February 10th) the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. In Chinese, the festival is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival,- marking the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season. Observances traditionally take place from Chinese New Year's Eve, the evening preceding the first day of the year, to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between January 21st & February 20th.
The Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely & the evening preceding the New Year's Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner.
It is also a tradition for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill fortune & to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows & doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include good fortune or happiness, wealth & longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers  & giving money in red envelopes.
•  Candlemas- is a Christian feast day on February 2nd commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. It is based upon the account of the presentation of Jesus in Luke 2:22-40.
While it is customary for Christians in some countries to remove their Christmas decorations on Twelfth Night, those in other Christian countries historically remove them after Candlemas. On Candlemas, many Christians also take their candles to their local church, where they are blessed and then used for the rest of the year.
•Setsubun- (February 3rd) Is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan. The name literally means 'seasonal division', referring to the day just before the first day of spring.
Both Setsubun & Risshun are celebrated yearly as part of the Spring Festival (Haru matsuri ) in Japan. In its association with the Lunar New Year, Setsubun, though not the official New Year, was thought of as similar in its ritual & cultural associations of 'cleansing' the previous year as the beginning of the new season of spring. Setsubun was accompanied by a number of rituals & traditions held at various levels to drive away the previous year's bad fortunes & evil spirits for the year to come.
Other Celebrations:
• Lupercalia-
In ancient Rome, this festival was conducted annually on February 13th through 15th under the superintendence of a corporation of priests called Luperci. The origins of the festival are obscure, although the likely derivation of its name from lupus (Latin: “wolf”) has variously suggested connection with an ancient deity who protected herds from wolves and with the legendary she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus. As a fertility rite, the festival is also associated with the god Faunus.
to purify the city, promoting health & fertility.
Each Lupercalia began with the sacrifice by the Luperci of goats and a dog, after which two of the Luperci were led to the altar, their foreheads were touched with a bloody knife & the blood was wiped off with wool dipped in milk; the ritual required that the two young men laugh. The sacrificial feast followed, after which the Luperci cut thongs from the skins of the sacrificial animals & ran in two bands around the Palatine hill, striking with the thongs at any woman who came near them. A blow from the thong was supposed to render a woman fertile.
In 494 CE the Christian church under Pope Gelasius I forbade participation in the festival. Tradition holds that he appropriated the form of the rite as the Feast of the Purification (Candlemas), celebrated on February 2, but it is likely that the Christian feast was established in the previous century. It has also been alternately suggested that Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, but the origin of that holiday was likely much later.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节), a Chinese celebratory season observed by many East and Southeast Asians, has begun. Held on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which is in the middle of autumn, the festival marks the end of the season’s harvest and is a time to appreciate the moon at its fullest and brightest. Besides feasting eyes on the moon and lanterns of different shapes and sizes, Mooncakes (月饼), a rich pastry with all sorts of fillings, are undoubtedly the main highlight of the festival and are traditionally shared among family and friends.
Tumblr media
The Cantonese Mooncake (广式月饼) is the most commonly found traditional mooncake in Singapore. Its fillings consist of lotus seed or red bean paste and usually include one, two or four salted duck egg yolks. Many would also be familiar with the snow skin variant that was created in Hong Kong in the 1960s as a healthier alternative to traditional baked mooncakes. The fillings and a ball of dough are traditionally pressed into a wooden mould, which embosses intricate wordings of the pastry shop’s name or stuffing on top of the pastry.
Tumblr media
A mooncake with various flavours such as rich, savoury-sweet and peppery, the Hainanese Mooncake (海南月饼), also known as Su Yan Bing (酥盐饼) is traditionally filled with ingredients such as fried shallots, lard, salt, white pepper, rose-flavoured white sugar, sesame seeds, melon seeds and dried wild tangerine skin peel. The filling is encased in a thin crust made with flour, salt and lard.
Tumblr media
The Hakka Mooncake (客家月饼) is also called Yu Gao (月糕) and is a flat, snow-white disc that is typically made with cooked glutinous rice flour and sugar, giving it a crumbly and powdery texture. It is usually embellished with more intricate designs, often with animals and flowers. Although it doesn’t usually contain any fillings, some come with candied winter melon, desiccated coconut and sesame seeds mixed with glutinous rice flour, sugar, margarine and water.
Tumblr media
Easily distinguishable by the red stamp of Chinese characters on the top of the crust and its white disc-shaped pastry which resembles a bright moon, the Hokkien Mooncake (福建月饼) consists of a dry and sweet filling that is made of candied winter melon, tangerine peel, melon seeds, sugar, and cooked with lard or peanut oil. A less common type is a savoury version with minced meat filling. Once known as Scholar Cakes (状元糕), they were given to those who took part in the Imperial examinations. Today, it is given as a symbol of good luck to those who are about to sit for their exams.
Tumblr media
Many would be familiar with the Teochew Mooncakes (潮州月饼). It has a crispy, spiral-layered crust that crumbles easily. It originated from the Chaoshan (潮汕) area in Guangdong Province and typically consists of yam paste and a salted duck egg yolk. Other traditional versions of the Teochew mooncake are still made by old school bakeries in Singapore. For example, La Bia (朥饼 or lard biscuit), where ‘La’ refers to pork oil, has a thinner, flaky crust with a thick mung bean or red bean filling. There are also alternative fillings including red bean, mung bean or lotus seed paste. There is also a steamed version of the typically baked Teochew mooncake, called La Gao (朥糕). It can either be served plain or with a mung bean filling.
Tumblr media
A Snow Skin Mooncake (冰皮月饼) variant was created in Hong Kong in the 1960s as a healthier alternative to traditional baked mooncakes. Similar to mochi, its crust is made of glutinous rice flour and varies in colour, based on the flavours used. And unlike traditional mooncakes, these are best served cold!

Note
You know those cheesy pasta dishes with all the fancy add-ins like heavy cream and garlic so we can all pretend to ourselves that we aren't just eating mac and cheese like overgrown children? What sort of equivalent dishes do the people of Tamriel enjoy, that are basically just dressed-up "kid food" dishes?
Who doesn't love a cheeky meal that brings back memories of childhood? Across Tamriel, you'll find all manner of simple, hearty foods that will make you feel like a kid again!
Altmer
In Summerset, young and old alike enjoy mochi, a tasty sweet snack made from chewy glutinous rice flour. Mochi comes in many varieties, with fillings like sweet peanut or black sesame paste. However, almost everyone's favourite is a cold mochi filled with soft gelato of various flavours. My favourite combination is matcha mochi wrapped around a moreish azuki bean ice cream centre.
Argonians
Is there anything that makes you feel more like a kid than some snacking? Argonians are huge fans of anything that packs a crunch, both sweet and savoury. Whether it's spicy and sweet crickets, dark saltrice sauce-coated mealworms, or just good old prawn crackers with some dipping sambal, be prepared to snack your way all day long in Black Marsh.
Bosmer
If you're one of those people who stands in the kitchen gnawing a block of cheese at midnight, you're in good company in Valenwood. A popular late-night treat served at street food vendors across the Province is a simple cup of grilled witchetty grubs slathered in timber mammoth cheese sauce and topped with pulled pork. The grubs are meaty in flavour, and the pungent timber mammoth cheese complements the pulled pork when mixed all together, as the locals enjoy it.
Bretons
Pain au chocolat? Yes please! These deliciously buttery puffed pastries are essentially rectangular croissants enveloping delicious dark chocolate. Served warm, they're sure to make any breakfast or teatime a happy one! To really satisfy those chocolate cravings, pair with a classic Breton hot chocolate, complete with marshmallows and whipped cream.
Dunmer
Marshmerrow cake is the ubiquitous Dunmeri dessert that has gained popularity far beyond the borders of Morrowind due to its mild flavour and unique candy aroma. A soft sponge cake, which is sometimes soaked in comberry brandy, is layered with sweet marshmerrow crème patissiere, caramelised marshmerrow crumble, and maraschino comberries. Sure to knock some years off your age and put a couple more holes in your belt (it's impossible to stop at one slice. Source: me).
Imperials
There's nothing quite like homemade gnocchi with ragout for Imperials when it comes to comfort food. While this homey dish is prevalent across Cyrodiil, every household cooks the dish differently. In mine, my mother pan-fries the gnocchi in an obnoxious amount of butter, and tops it with her top-secret slow-cooked lamb and red wine ragout. While I cannot give away the secrets to her ragout, I highly recommend trying this delicious dish a try when you need to warm yourself, body and soul.
Khajiit
If you think you can turn away cinnamon and cardamom churros with a cup of moon sugar caramel dip, you're deluding yourself. This delicious treat can be found across Elsweyr and is considered one of the Province's most famous foods. Khajiiti churros, which are made from a mix of rice and tapioca flour, have a moist and chewy texture beneath a crisp, golden brown outer layer. They're served hot from the wok, with a cup of moon sugar caramel syrup. A truly divine pairing!
Nords
Spätzle is something I've written about in the past, and it's one of the best things I know (ask any resident of Skyrim and they'd tell you the same). These chunky egg noodles may look unrefined compared to Khajiiti vermicelli, but make up for it when liberally doused in a creamy cheese sauce and topped with fried onions. I like spicing mine up, quite literally, with some chili powder I purchased at a Sentinel bazaar.
Orcs
Nothing screams comfort food (and mess) quite like a good old echatere sausage hot dog. The echatere sausage, rather akin to Blackwood chorizo in flavour, is grilled over hot coals and served in a sourdough bun, served Wrothgar style with a good amount of horseradish mayo, fried radish chips, caramelised onions, pickles, and crispy dried baby shrimp topping. I'd say you can't stop at just one, but it's a hefty meal you can eat with one hand!
Redguards
I have probably written about gulab jamun in the past, a delicious, albeit cloying dessert popular throughout Hammerfell. An iconic dish at festivals and parties, gulab jamun is prized by dessert-lovers for its velvety, syrupy texture. These fluffy balls of cardamom-scented cottage cheese are fried and soaked in a fragrant saffron and rose water syrup, and topped with crushed pistachios. So simple, so good, and so moreish. Just be sure to stop at three, because any more and the sugar rush will send you to Aetherius!

The Otherside Picnic Michelin Guide
Instead of prepping all the shit I have to do for an upcoming 80-hour work week, my procrastination has led me to writing this list, which is mostly a food-focused curation of my OP Pilgrimage Destination List, with new additions that I've discovered since publishing that.
I like to eat and my 4 years of working as a food journalist have sorta ingrained a subconscious razor-sharp attention to mentions of food in the media that I consume (pun intended). Armed with 5 years of experience living full-time in Tokyo, I've decided to redirect my powers for the Greater Gastronomic Good.
All photos featured are taken from Tablelog/official sources. I haven't been to any of these places myself, but you bet your ass I will be visiting most of them and writing up reviews on here when I'm done.
1. Kitchen Nankai Jinbocho (キッチン南海 神保町店)
Tumblr media
The "Western food" (洋食) place Sorawo and Toriko visited for a quick builder's lunch in Vol 6 (File 20 - T is for Templeborn).
In case you're interested in what our protagonists ate:
Sorawo ordered the tonkatsu curry (カツカレー) topped with cheese, while Toriko went for the fried flounder and ginger pork with rice (ひらめフライ生姜焼きライス).
From the photos on their Tablelog page, raw egg seems to be the most popular topping for curry, which is surprising to me since cheese seems like the most intuitive candidate. Best to bring a healthy appetite since their portions look absolutely huge.
2. Sichuan Cuisine Aki Jinbocho (四川料理 秋 神保町本店)
Tumblr media
The Chinese restaurant near Jinbocho station where Toriko and Sorawo held their first ever afterparty together after hunting the kunekune.
Unlike what the name implies, it seems to be a run-of-the-mill Chinese place that kinda does a jack-of-all-trades menu rather than any focused niche in Sichuan cuisine. They even have peking duck on the menu according to their Tablelog page, but I can't guarantee if it'd be any good.
If you want to follow what SoraTori ordered, then go for the cashew chicken (鶏肉のカシューナッツ炒め), cumin lamb (ラム肉のクミン炒め) and water spinach (空芯菜), and wash it all down with Tsingtao beer.
3. Cafe Pause Ikebukuro
Tumblr media
The cafe where Toriko and Sorawo had their first fight. Its location right behind Junkudo presumably translates into a lot of foot traffic from bookworms. Reviews that I've read say that more than half of its customers come here just to read in peace, and it's got free wifi to boot, so the ambience's probably top notch as well.
The cafe regularly updates its menu (but not online, sadly) and offers a wide range of cafe staples such as fresh pasta lunch sets and homemade baked goods. If you want to recreate Sorawo's one-woman feast, you can check to see if the menu has some or all of the following items:
Taco rice
Chocolate and sour cherry cake
Matcha terrine
“Tart of the day” topped with raspberries
Caffè latte
Grape-flavoured black tea (ぶどうの紅茶)
Check out their website and Instagram here.
4. Maison c
Tumblr media
Also nearby Junkudo is this cosy little wine bar in Ikebukuro where Sorawo and Toriko had a rather gloomy dinner after the Ninja Cat saga in Vol 2 (File 8 - Little Bird in a Box).
They don't have a website or a menu, but from what I could glean from their Instagram, they serve mostly seasonal French-Italian fare. Order some sparkling red wine and a prosciutto-salami platter for that SoraTori experience.
Place looks tiny so I wouldn't try to visit with more than one companion, or at least not without a reservation (strictly by phone).
6. Keio Plaza Hotel Shinjuku
The buffet that The Girls stuffed their faces at for their first anniversary dinner in Vol 7 (File 22 - Toilet Paper Moon) is the Glass Court Super Buffet, located on the 2nd floor.
The line in the book about roast beef being their signature is probably true. I mean LOOK AT THIS:
Tumblr media
Other shout-outs from the book (MASSIVE HUNGER WARNING):
Picking away at the appetizer of sakura shrimp and lily bulbs as we talked, our first glasses were soon empty.
I gluttonously loaded up my plate with fresh fried tempura, mussels, foie gras with strawberry sauce, Berkshire pork and mountain vegetables fried in miso, and tom yum noodles. Toriko got a chicken stir fry with chili peppers, chicken liver and bamboo shoots in garlic, a bunch of Iberian ham, and more. It was a lot of meat, but she also had a Caesar salad and yuba maki rolls, so she still succeeded in having a somewhat stylish plate overall.
Just a bit of an intermission here to note a couple of slight mistranslations. The Japanese text is as follows:
"sand liver") refers to the gizzard. The name is derived from how the organ works, which stores bits of grit to help grind up food before it's digested, since birds can't chew.
生ハム (nama hamu - lit. "raw ham") is a term for generic proscuitto, and is not interchangeable with the much more culturally/geographically-specific parma ham or jamon iberico.
We both went to the buffet and came back, having gotten gratin, paella, beef curry, and other heavy foods that would pair well with red wine.
Toriko asked between bites of roast beef. It was the type the chef cuts as you watch, and I’d gotten some too. This was supposed to be one of their best dishes here and the taste reflected that.
I got a tiny cake and a confection called nerikiri, then poured myself a cup of black tea.
It was Crêpes Suzette, warm crepes in an orange sauce with coconut ice cream on top.
The second half of the night takes place at the Aurora Sky Lounge on the 45th floor.
Tumblr media
Definitely a great (and very convenient) choice to bring a date to get in the mood.
7. Chichibu Waraji Katsu Tei (秩父わらじかつ亭)
Tumblr media
After escaping Hasshaku-sama in Vol 1 (File 2 - Hasshaku-sama Survival), Toriko and Sorawo had dinner at a waraji katsu shop located within the food court of a recreational complex that was connected to Seibu-Chichibu station.
This complex is called Matsuri No Yu (祭の湯) and the only waraji katsu shop here is Chichibu Waraji Katsu Tei (秩父わらじかつ亭).
Here's their Tablelog page. According to reviews, the standard serving size is two pieces of katsu. Miyazawa really wasn't lying about meat overflowing from the bowl.
8. Masan's Home (琉球酒場 ま~さんの家)
Tumblr media
The Okinawan izakaya that Sorawo and Toriko pigged out at after finding themselves on Kokusai-dori in Naha.
Their Tablelog page features a very extensive menu. Jimami tofu and sea grapes are a must if you're visiting Okinawa for the first time, and I also recommend going for the local sashimi platter as well as other Okinawan specialties such as rafute, Okinawa soba, goat sashimi and bitter gourd stir-fry (ゴーヤチャンプルー).
Honourable Mentions
1. Mendokoro Maruwa (麺処 まるわ)
Tumblr media
In case you missed it, there was an OP x ramen collab back in 2018. You can read all about it in my first ever tumblr post (literally I made a whole ass tumblr acc bc I felt like I NEEDED to share it with the world lmao).
I'm not sure if the Ultra Blue is still up on the menu (probably not after all these years), but if you're enthusiastic about the restaurant's link with the series then perhaps it's worth checking out. Their signature is the basil salt tsukemen (バジルソルトつけ麺) so it wouldn't be too different from the Ultra Blue in terms of base flavour profile.
Here's their Tablelog page and Twitter.
PS. This place is in Chiba prefecture, outside of Tokyo. So like idk maybe plan it before a Disneyland trip or smth to be more time-efficient.
2. Kayu San Chin Keio Mall (粥餐庁 京王モール店)
The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) food therapy restaurant that Sorawo and gang visited in Vol 3 after the events of the Kotoribako was KOGA Seibu Ikebukuro (皇雅西武池袋店), which closed down a few years ago.
While not a perfect replacement, there's a store specialising in Chinese-style congee located at the Keio Mall in Shinjuku, called Kayu San Chin (粥餐庁 - lit. "congee restaurant" in Chinese).
Their menu is similar enough (sans the TCM tea selection that was apparently a signature offering by Koga).
3. A Whole Buncha Meat Places
Kozakura treated Toriko and Sorawo to a luxurious steak lunch near Shakujii-kōen station after the kidnapping incident in Vol 4 (File 12 - The Matter of that Farm). While Meat Bar Modavaca (ニクバル モダ・バッカ) has since closed down, there's more than a handful of places where you can try out the quintessential "sizzling hot plate" Japanese steakhouse experience for yourself.
Ikinari Steak (いきなり!ステーキ) is the most easily accesible place where you can order a cut of beef by weight. It's a chain, so don't get your hopes up with regards to the meat quality, but it's also a convenient and budget-friendly option. Website here.
Steak Kuni (ステーキくに) is a similar concept business but on a much smaller scale - with only three locations so far split between Tokyo, Natori in Miyagi prefecture and Koshigaya in Saitama prefecture. Website and Instagram here.
Beef Up Tokyo is a chic joint nestled somewhere near the Yaesu side of Tokyo station near Kyobashi. Which bumps it up really high on my to-try list based on the location alone (I'm pretty sure my usual hotel is max 2 streets away from it). They have basic options that start at 1,800 yen for a 200g cut of run-of-the-mill sirloin, to A5 marbled wagyu going at 3,600 yen for the same size. Which is a steal imo. Click here for their Tablelog page, Instagram and official website.
Pound-Ya Roppongi (听屋 六本木) is another option if you want to splurge a little bit more on quality. Their wagyu steaks are priced at 2,200 yen/100g for the rump/round and 4,000 yen/100g for the sirloin, with the filet taking the cake at 5,600 yen/100g. Tablelog page and Instagram here.
PS. I KNOW that you laughed at that name.

A Dinner and Dessert Too Many
Read here or on AO3! - Chubtober Day 2
---
“Ggukie! Perfect timing, dinner’s ready!” Jin called out as soon as Jungkook walked in the front door.
Jungkook let out a little sigh as his hand landed on his full stomach, having just gotten pizza with his friends after his evening class was dismissed early - a little post-project celebration.
Just as he was about to say he had already eaten, Jungkook entered the dining room and saw Hoseok and Yoongi bringing a bunch of banchan dishes to the table surrounding a large platter of samgyeopsal.
“Jinnie made your favorite, baby. We know you just turned in your final project so we wanted to spoil you a bit,” Namjoon said with a sweet smile.
Jungkook’s eyes widened, realizing there was no way he could say no to their loving gesture.
“Wow, it smells amazing. Thank you, hyungs.”
He received various responses of love and praise, encouraging him to take a seat while they finished setting the table - telling him he was the guest of honor and deserved to sit and relax while they served him.
With a bolstering deep breath, Jungkook tried to think hungry thoughts and ignore the first dinner in his stomach already. His boyfriends were being so lovely and showed their pride in him so he could reject their gesture.
Taehyung joined them, seeming to have just showered. He smacked a loud kiss on Jungkook’s forehead and said he couldn’t wait to see the younger’s final edit of his short film.
Jin entered from the kitchen with the last round of plates and greeted Jungkook with a kiss as well.
“I hope you’re hungry, I made extra just for you. You deserve it.”
Jungkook smiled and thanked Jin again while trying to think about how much food he was going to eat that night. He could already feel his stomach stretching to make more room.
On a night with an empty stomach, he would have been over the moon with this spread, but right now, Jungkook was simply hoping that the button on his jeans held strong or he would at least get a free moment to unbutton his pants for more space.
Once everyone was seated, Jungkook realized an empty chair was at their table.
Just as he started to ask where the seventh person was, the front door opened, revealing Jimin, who had a beaming smile on his face and a cake box in his hands.
“Bun! You did it! Congratulations!” Jimin declared, opening the box to reveal a beautiful cake from Jungkook’s favorite bakery.
The smile came naturally in response to Jimin’s radiant energy; Jungkook almost grew teary-eyed at the pure show of love for every one of his boyfriends.
He accepted an excited kiss from Jimin and told him the cake looked delicious, even though the thought of eating dessert after the impending second dinner made his head spin.
Jin started dishing out the food as soon as Jimin took his seat, of course, starting with Jungkook, who received a literal mountain of food on his plate. The sight of pork belly stacked up in front of him made Jungkook a little nauseous.
He tried to give himself a little bit of time to digest more of his first dinner by excitedly telling his boyfriends all about his final project. His enthusiasm was genuine since Jungkook was very proud of his work, but the explanation and follow-up questions around the table did help his stomach find some more space.
Jungkook focused the next twenty minutes on Jin’s delicious food and ignored every signal from his brain and body to stop eating. He was more than full, but the food was incredible and made with love, so how could Jungkook possibly seem ungrateful by tapping out early?
Of all days to wear nice clothes for his presentation, it certainly was not working in Jungkook’s favor. The form-fitting waistband of his dress pants offered little to no stretch. It was fighting against the growing bloat of his full stomach, causing a pinching discomfort at his sides.
Surveying the table, Jungkook waited until he could find a window of time where his boyfriends were distracted with conversation. He continued to take small bites as a show that he was still eating his food while the other hand rested on the button of his pants. The moment never came, though, and Jungkook was stuck hoping and praying that he didn’t send the button flying off his waistband. Thankfully, the table was quickly running out of food, and he was able to get down the last few bites of meat on his plate.
Jungkook could have kissed Hoseok when he was the first to stand and start clearing some plates from the table. He knew they would want to immediately cut the cake and give him even more food to power through, so he knew the pants needed to come off first. “Hyungs, is it okay if I go change and get comfortable before we cut the cake?” Jungkook asked sweetly, still sitting down in an attempt to hide his impressive food baby. He always had a big appetite, but he had well and truly overeaten tonight having two dinners back-to-back with large servings at both meals.
“Of course, Gguk-ah, we will give you a pass on cleaning up tonight,” Yoongi replied, placing a kiss on the top of Jungkook’s head as he walked behind him toward the kitchen sink. Jungkook genuinely smiled at Yoongi’s response since he felt very loved and spoiled by his boyfriends. He waited until everyone was mostly away from the table or at least distracted by the discussion of who would do the dishes before he got up.
With a quick turn and the quickest walk he could manage, Jungkook made his way to find his biggest pair of sweatpants and hoodie. He locked himself in the bathroom to change which would have been a red flag to any of his boyfriends had they followed him.
The button on his pants put up a bit of a fight since it had little room to move, but the relief Jungkook felt when he finally got it undone was heavenly. His stomach somehow expanded even more without the constricting band, bigger than he had ever seen his typically flat belly.
Catching a glance of himself in the mirror, Jungkook felt his cheeks warm with embarrassment. He couldn’t believe the state of his bloated middle. How had he convinced himself to be so gluttonous to eat two dinners instead of just being honest?
The unmoving stare at his reflection was finally interrupted when Tae’s voice called out for him to hurry up. Jungkook startled and then began pulling on his comfortable clothes, ignoring the fact that his waistband sitting below his stomach only further emphasized the roundness of his bloated belly.
Pulling on his hoodie to hide the evidence, Jungkook avoided the mirror as he left the bathroom. He made his way back downstairs and found his boyfriends spread out around the living room with Iron Man pulled up on the TV.
The self-loathing part of his brain had been overpowered by the tears threatening his eyes from the absolute kindhearted love of his partners. Jungkook walked further into the room, seeing the open spot in the middle of the sectional for him. However, he also saw the massive serving of cake one of them prepared for him.
Any other night, Jungkook would have been more than excited to dig into the sweet confection, but the thought of eating more still made him a bit nauseous. He slowly took his seat between Jimin and Taehyung, knowing that his affectionate boyfriends would cuddle up to him as soon as they could.
Jungkook instinctively accepted the plate from Namjoon who picked it up and handed it to him with a loving smile, telling him that they were proud of him which was enough to make Jungkook want to cry again. He took a bite right away and thanked Jimin again for picking it up since it was really his favorite.
His stomach accepted the first few bites, finding more room for the new sugary flavor. Jungkook nearly said thank you when Taehyung asked for a bite, happily sharing which probably was shocking to his boyfriends who were used to his more selfish tendencies when it comes to food.
Focusing on the movie was a good enough excuse not to finish his cake, acting as if he didn’t know Taehyung was stealing bites from his extra large slice. Jungkook thought he was in the clear until he felt Jimin’s gentle hand reach across him to cuddle in closer.
Neither Jimin nor Taehyung said a word when they felt him tense up even though they certainly noticed it. While they just continued cuddling him without recognizing Jungkook’s strange behavior, one of their boyfriends was more keenly watching.
The movie came to an end and Jungkook finally felt that he had digested a small portion of his large two-part dinner and dessert. Jimin had fallen asleep on Jungkook’s shoulder with a hand thankfully on his thigh instead of his stomach. Taehyung was just as invested in the movie and didn’t say a word if he noticed anything.
Namjoon gave Jungkook a kiss before picking up Jimin to carry him to bed while Taehyung happily went off to another bedroom with Yoongi and Hoseok who all gave Jungkook their goodnight kisses, leaving Jungkook with Jin.
Jungkook knew he wouldn’t be able to completely hide his still-bloated stomach from Jin, but he was hoping to avoid acknowledging it. His eldest boyfriend offered his hands to help Jungkook up and Jin stepped behind him, instantly noticing the tension in the younger’s shoulders.
Jin wrapped his arms around Jungkook’s waist and kissed his shoulder, one hand slipping below the oversized hoodie. He couldn’t help the smirk when he heard the quiet gasp from Jungkook.
Stopping them from walking so their boyfriends couldn’t hear them, Jin ran his hand up and down Jungkook’s belly and whispered, “Still feeling full, baby?”
“W-What?” Jungkook stuttered out, feeling that warmth return to his cheeks.
“Oh, come on now, you can’t hide from your hyung. You know that,” Jin teased, pinching Jungkook’s side causing the younger to flinch further back into Jin’s chest.
“I-”
“Jungkook-ah, you could’ve told me you were full. I wouldn’t have been upset.”
“But-”
“But…instead, you decided to eat another full dinner and dessert until you couldn’t eat anymore, right?”
Jungkook’s face was on fire now, not only embarrassed to have been caught but knowing the fact that Jin had known the entire time. Had he been thinking rationally, Jungkook would have remembered that Jin had all their shared locations in case of emergencies and surprises so he knew that the youngest was at a pizza place instead of class before coming home.
Deciding he couldn’t fight it now, Jungkook went with the other approach. “Hyung…” he pouted, turning over his shoulder to give Jin his best puppy eyes.
“Oh, don’t look at me like that and keep walking. Maybe hyung will even give you a belly rub if you’re good,” Jin responded, his tone even more teasing than before.
Jungkook whined again but continued up to the other open bedroom, trying to ignore the fact that Jin’s warm hand on his taut stomach felt very comforting. “Don’t tease me, Jinnie-hyung. I just wanted to be grateful since you all did so much to celebrate for me.”
Jin smiled and laid another gentle kiss on Jungkook’s neck. “Our sweet Ggukie. Tell you what, this will be our little secret, okay?”
Even though he originally thought he wanted to take that night to his grave without anyone ever knowing, Jungkook had to admit that Jin’s moderate teasing and tender touch made him think that accidentally eating way too much wasn’t so bad.

When ever I forget to switch my keyboard from Vietnamese to English to type Oscar’s name, his last name would become Píatri
And Mid autumn festival is coming up and I’m craving for some pía cake, which also quite popular to replace the moon cake in Vietnamese base on where you are
So this is what wiki has about it 😂
Bánh bía, sometimes spelled bánh pía, is a type of Vietnamese cuisine bánh (translates loosely as "cake" or "bread"). A Suzhou style mooncake adapted from Teochew cuisine. The Vietnamese name comes from the Teochew word for pastry, "pia". In Saigon, the pastry is called “bánh bía” while in Sóc Trăng and Vũng Thơm it is known by "bánh Pía". Some Vietnamese call it bánh lột da, which translates to "peeling flakes pastry", and those from the Bến Tre region call it bánh bao chi, which is the name for Mochi elsewhere in Vietnam.[1] Popular fillings include durian, shredded pork fat, salted egg yolk, mung bean paste, taro and coconut.
(I was drawing this during the start of the race, and damn, poor Oscar 😂)

for wincest wednesday this fine week: food as love language & touchstone (tastestone?)
palo alto -- with a 4.6-star shawarma place two blocks north of the first shitty dive apartment he scores, and a two-story ethiopian market six blocks west, and more vegetarian and vegan options than sam's seen in his entire life to date -- is a revelation in gastronomic terms.
sam eats tofu for the first time in his life at nineteen; eats tempeh and seitan and vegan cheese. (sam does not eat sardines on saltines because there's nobody to split the tin with, and he can't eat them all on his own.) sam eats breadfruit and resolutely does not think about mutiny on the bounty playing during abc's evening film slot and dean doing his best marlon brando voice, "not even twenty, and a death sentence on your head". (sam does not head straight for north carolina come september with the single-minded intent to eat enough ripe persimmons to make himself sick, but he knows who'll be doing just that.) sam eats swiss chard and lychees and cempedak, and doesn't miss unbruised pieces of apple served to him off the blade of a pocket knife.
sam eats vienna sausages cold, straight from the can with a dash of tabasco when he's feeling -- nostalgic's the wrong word for it, but a close cousin to that. when he misses the white-noise hum of tires on I-95 and the clatter-clank of the forever-broken air-con and his brother contorted in the front seat to pass sam the gallon ziploc of cherries from the farm stand up the road ("dollar-fifty a pound, can you believe it, sammy? fucking love stonefruit season."), already sweating in their plastic bag.
sam eats off-brand cereal and moon pies and hohos -- "hohos? fuck hohos; swiss roll is obviously the superior snack cake and you know it" -- and roller dogs and funyuns when he gets homesick.
sam hoards plastic pots of coffee creamer and flat-topped single-serve bricks of jelly out of unbreakable habit. concord grape, always; strawberry, usually; marmalade and mixed berry and apple butter and honey in nicer places that serve all-day breakfast; blackberry and seedless red raspberry only if he's exceptionally lucky. (these last two, being both rarest and dean's favorites, were more valuable to sam growing up than cigarettes amongst inmates. many a favor has sam bought himself over the years with nothing more than a fistful of jam packets and a winning smile.)
sam licks marshmallow and coconut from between his fingers and doesn't think about the hostess sno-ball, sweet'n'low pink of dean's tongue.
(later -- years later -- when dean waggles his lifesavers and tortilla chips and mountain dew at sam with overtures of breakfast, sam declines. later, he'll find his favorite pineapple soda and a bag of chili lime pork rinds under the bench seat because of all the people in all the world, the one who's never let sam go unfed is dean.)
MWAH! happy snacking; cilla/mdbp 😈🎉
happy wincest wednesday!!
you KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK!!!!!! GRAHHHHH!!!!!! YOUR WRITING MAKES ME BARK LIKE A FUCKING DOGGGG!!!!!!! gnawing on this ask like a chew toy.
the swiss rolls??? the food in palo alto?? the JELLY????
AND YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
i have so much to say about this!!!! i've used "food as care" in my fics before, and as a form of connection between the two (pretty much all of tell me, why are you still so afraid, in the heaven fic, the vampire fic (in a diff way but still!), love potion no. 9, the mall fic, the outsider pov at the diner fic) because it's so true!
we're 800% not the only people to bring up the "food as care" parallels in media, or even spn--but it's so true!!!
you're so right about food being a love language! one of the first things that dean does in the bunker is make a nice meal for them both and wait for sam to eat first.
dean's "crime" that got him arrested and sent to the boy's home is stealing bread to feed sam. his crime is an act of care! an act of devotion! and it's that same devotion that encourages him to leave!
one of THEE sam&dean scenes that i've seen 400x in every edit ever as proof of dean's devotion/care is dean making sam spaghetti-os in that pot, and then letting him have dean's food instead.
dean keeps trying to ply sam with food and things to drink after his nightmares in the first few seasons, grabbing his face and bringing him close and asking if he's hungry, if dean can get him anything
and of course, arguably the most famous food scenes in the show--tuesday! pig n' a poke! what always makes me giggle is that sam never stops dean from eating? not really? he lets dean order his food every day/finds alternative food (e.g., tacos). even when he gets annoyed, he orders dean's food for him. even when sam himself stops ordering things to eat, he makes sure dean stays fed. it doesn't matter, bc they'll live the same day again tomorrow, but sam lets dean eat!!!!! he lets him eat the meal that makes him happy! they end up in the diner more days than not, it sounds like. he's caring for him, even as he gets frustrated and angry and sad and hopeless!
even when dean dies in that same episode, we see sam eating a meal at his motel, and dean's food is also on the table!!! he's been ordering dean meals for months, even though he's dead!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!
dean seems unnerved and tense around sam when eating in S6, because even though he eats, he doesn't find any joy in it, or teasing dean about it. all their shared meals in early S6 are either tense or disturbingly neutral, where they only talk about their hunts/the overarching plot in bland detail.
hell, dean (and the show) frame the leviathans using biggerson's food as a very personal and dirty betrayal--they use food as a weapon
even in IATL, the "thing" that changes about dean the most that the writers told us first and foremost, is his relationship with food! sam--who has been reaching out all episode and rebuffed--asks to go get food with dean after their initial walls-down moment, and dean denies his attempt at care and connection! he's on a juice cleanse!
many such cases!
i have this headcanon that dean stopped eating certain foods after sam left for stanford. suddenly, he can't stand bugles because they taste like sand in his mouth now that sam is not there to fight him for them.
he asks for no onion rings everywhere he goes because sam's long fingers aren't there to sneak them out of his wax-paper lined plastic fast-food basket.
and as soon as sam comes back, they go out to eat, and dean's like 'god, i can't fucking wait. i haven't had pork rinds/cantaloupe/mac and cheese/a reuben in forever!' and sam just kind of looks at him funny because dean used to eat BBQ pork rinds by the pound and sam gave him shit for it every time. and they used to sneak the little soggy plastic containers of cantaloupe from the cooler outside a publix in florida once a week, dean acting as a distraction by helping old ladies with their carts while sam's tiny hands got slick-wet with week-old re-frozen ice.
and one day, two years into stanford, sam thinks he sees a glimpse of short-cropped hair, freckle-kissed skin through the café window sam's been picking up swing shifts at, and sam leaves the espresso machine still dripping, pushing past a bleary-eyed biology professor sam knows from gen ed, and spins in a circle outside, blinking sun from his eyes.
by the time he can see, the person is gone. and sam is standing in the 7/11 after work, buying a bag of hostess powdered don-ettes because dean used to buy them on sunday morning and they would eat them and watch re-runs of 90210 until their t-shirts were smeared white and their fingers were spit-sticky and soggy while everyone else in georgia and alabama and oklahoma was going to church.
food in supernatural is connection and home and reassurance and care!!!!!
your writing is again so good!!!! thank you for this lovely wincest wednesday ask, blessed, darling cilla!!!! mwah! mwah mwah!!

maniacally laughing just saw a street preacher with a spanging sign of doctor bronneresque density consensually stripper grind someone who was wearing a vest made out of dead beanie babies or a babo shaped babo
last week the blue moon landed on my birthday for only the second time in my life. so much that happened between those two birthdays was an unwinding of everything that came before, and a lot of that hurt, it really hurt, but now i feel strangely untouchable. i may get one more blue moon birthday in nineteen years. i can't wait to see what this new era brings
in the last week, i saw the giant snapper that rules the bull sluice. i ate fried chicken and seven-up cake, homemade pulled pork nachos, and waffle house. i went to the parade with both of my kids for the first time in a decade. i talked to a good friend on the phone for hours. i laughed so much. i made a delicious pot of very angry beans. i slept with my windows open for the first time since spring, and i drank coffee on my cool breezy porch
it's been a very good week
(oh yeah, and i learned a thing about myself that folks have been telling me since i was sixteen, but i finally heard them, and i am still laughing about it)

Reminder that Pedrito Pascal said once in an interview that the UK thinks they have good snacks...😂😂

Listen, as one of my best friend IRLs man crush, I have a lot of respect for PP. However even as a joke, this respect has been slightly diminished.
We are the land of pom bears and jaffa cakes. Of Dairy Milk and Mr Kipling. Of irn bru bars and toffee and mcvities. Of shortbread and pork pies and sausage rolls and mini cheddars and hula hoops and dairylee triangles. How dare he. How dare.
For shame, Pedro. For shame.

Today, December’s full Moon is most commonly known as the Cold Moon—a Mohawk name that conveys the frigid conditions of this time of year, when cold weather truly begins to grip us.
This full Moon has also been called the Long Night Moon (Mohican), as it rises during the “longest” nights of the year, near the December winter solstice. This name is doubly fitting because December’s full Moon shines above the horizon for a more extended period than most full Moons.
In Europe, ancient pagans called the December full Moon the “Moon Before Yule,” in honor of the Yuletide festival celebrating the return of the sun heralded by winter solstice.

“Yule” comes from Old English geol, which shares a history with the equivalent word from Old Norse, jól. Both these words referred to a midwinter festival centered around the winter solstice, which traditionally marked the halfway point of the winter season. After the solstice—the shortest day of the year—the days again begin to grow longer, so it’s thought that Yule was a celebration of the re-appearance of the Sun &the fertile land’s rebirth.
The celebration of Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Ancient people were hunters & spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons & weather played a significant part in their lives. The customs and traditions associated with it vary widely.
Scholars have connected the original celebrations of Yule to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin, and the heathen Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht ("Mothers' Night")
Some believe it marks the rebirth of the Sun (the God) from the Earth (the Goddess) & the cold days of winter will soon begin to wane. The Goddess is seen in her virgin Maiden aspect
In towns and cities throughout Sweden during the Christmas season, large goats are constructed out of straw. It is thought that the tradition originated in ancient times, perhaps as a tribute to the god Thor, who was said to ride in a chariot pulled by goats. In Sweden the goat came to be associated with the Christmas celebration, and the Yule goat is now considered by many to be a companion or counterpart to Santa Claus.
Related festivals:
Christmas- An annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ as the son of God, primarily observed on December 25th
Hanukkah- A Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem & subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights & days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, commonly called a menorah or hanukkiah.
Kwanzaa- An annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1st, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West & Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.
A Kwanzaa ceremony may include drumming and musical selections, libations, a reading of the African Pledge & the Principles of Blackness, reflection on the Pan-African colors, a discussion of the African principle of the day or a chapter in African history, a candle-lighting ritual, artistic performance & finally, a feast of faith (Karamu Ya Imani).
Saturnalia-
is an ancient Roman festival and holiday in honour of the god Saturn, held on 17 December of the Julian calendar & later expanded with festivities through to 23 December. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum & a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying & a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted & masters provided table service for their slaves as it was seen as a time of liberty for both slaves and freedmen alike.
A common custom was the election of a "King of the Saturnalia", who gave orders to people, which were followed & presided over the merrymaking. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".
Other celebrations:
Feast of Epona-
Eponalia is the feast day of Gaulish Goddess Epona, the Divine Mare & in the time of the Roman Empire it was celebrated on December 18th.
Epona is known to be one of a very few Gaulish deities whose names were spread to the rest of the Roman Empire. This seems to have happened because Roman cavalry units stationed in Gaul followed Her & adopted her as their Patroness. This may have started because many of the cavalry troops were conscripted from Gaul as they were superb horsemen. From Gaul the Romans took Epona with them including to Rome where She was given her own feast day on the 18 December. They worshipped her as Epona Augusta or Epona Regina & invoked her on behalf of the Emperor. She even had a shrine in the barracks of the Imperial Bodyguard.
Hunting of the Wren-
A traditional custom carried out on the Isle of Man on the 26 December, St. Stephen's Day. It consists of groups of people going around villages and towns singing and dancing a traditional song and dance around a decorated wren pole.
The earliest and most common folklore story accounting for the origin of hunt the wren tells of a fairy/enchantress/witch whose beauty lures the men of the Isle of Man to harm, for which she is chased and is changed into the form of a wren. It is therefore in punishment for her actions that the wren is hunted on St. Stephen's Day

Question: has the slave trade in Morrowind influenced the cuisine of the province at all? Specifically it feels as if the cuisine of the Khajiit would be popular among more... open minded Dunmer.
Has cultural exchange (yikes wording, but I need to be broad), willing or unwilling, affected the cuisines of any other cultures?
Due to the insular nature of Dunmeri culture, there has, for the most part, been a fairly limited adoption of other cultures' food. This is due to a few reasons, but plain old racism is a driving factor, because no self-respecting Dres is going to eat filthy Argonian food. However, there are a few things which have slipped through the net and become incorporated into Dunmeri cuisine.
For example, Khajiiti dumplings have been popular for hundreds of years, whereby pot sticker dumplings are first boiled or steamed before being fried til crisp on the outside. They are, however, stuffed with spiced nix-hound or guar rather than pork or seafood, and are dipped in saltrice sauce rather than sweet moon sugar chili dip.
Another Khajiiti dish which is enjoyed are steamed caramel saltrice cakes, though it's hard to say who influenced who here. Soft "cupcakes" made from saltrice are light, airy, and slightly chewy in texture. They are infused with a dark palm or moon sugar caramel, and are each about the size of a small fist.
As for Argonian food, there is extremely little overlap, primarily due to the native Black Marsh ingredients available or cultivated in Morrowind. One exception is bantam guar mole over steamed saltrice, which is somewhat similar to Ashlander bantam guar stew (once again, it's more acceptable to attribute the origins of the dish to "savage" Mer of the same race than it is to slaves, apparently).
For a comprehensive look at other cultural influences on Provincial foods, be sure to check out my list on fusion food. ~Talviel
