explaining f1: tyres 🛞
first post in this series (will it be a series? we’ll see)
recently i think we’ve had some particularly interesting races in terms of tyre strategy and i readied in suzuka that i don’t totally understand it all, so this has been my little research project on tyres!
pirelli
pirelli are an italian tyre manufacturer who have been supplying f1 tyres since 2011. unlike some eras of f1, pirelli is currently the exclusive supplier in the sport.
in 2022, pirelli introduced a new 18-inch (the previous being 13-inch) tyre as part of sweeping changes to the technical regulations of the sport.
compounds
pirelli’s range is currently comprised of six ‘slick’ compounds (referred to as slick because they lack the grooves of normal road tyres - this is because these grooves exist to dispel water, something necessary for road tyres but that slows down an f1 car when not necessary) tyres, along with ‘intermediates’ and full ‘wets’ to account for weather conditions.
the six slick compounds (from hardest to softest) are referred to as follows: c0, c1, c2, c3, c4 and c5. from this range, pirelli pick three to be used at each grand prix, based on the track characteristics and climate.
the highest of the set is marked red and is known as the soft, the middle marked yellow and know as the medium, with the lowest marked white and known as the hard (intermediates are green and wets are blue).
theoretically, the softs have more grip over short periods of time, making them faster and better for qualifying runs. generally, the hard and medium compounds are more favourable on race day because they last longer.
rules
on most weekends, drivers are given 13 sets of slicks, 4 intermediates and 3 wets, with a set of softs reserved for drivers who reach q3 (the final round of qualifying). all drivers must return 2 sets after each of the 3 practise sessions, meaning only 7 sets are left for qualifying and the race. drivers must also use at least two different slick compounds during the race (provided the weather is dry).
on sprint weekends, the number of dry sets are reduced to 12. after the sprint, drivers must return the set they completed the most laps on.
tyre allocation is on a per-driver basis, teammates cannot share or swap tyres. in bahrain in 2020, mercedes mistakenly put bottas’ tyres on russell’s car when attempting a double stack. the team was fined €20,000 for this.
drivers must run the same compound on all four wheels at all times.
strategy
tyre plan for the weekend is the decision of the team, generally based on information from pirelli, observed degradation over practise, the circuit and the weather forecast.
if rain is expected, teams can draw from their wet weather allocation, and so they don’t need to be as cautious with their dry weather tyres. if it’s hot, teams have to make sure they can cover plenty of tyre changes.
if track layout means overtaking is tough, teams may want a higher number of pitstops to stop drivers getting stuck behind rivals. also, if the track is walled (and so safety cars are more likely) teams may plan for more stops.
terminology
scrubbed: teams often ‘scrub in’ a set of tyres by running them briefly during practise, this means that when they are later used in the race, they warm up much faster than brand new tyres.
blistering: when the inner part of tyre heats more than the outer, creating minor explosions which damage the surface of the tyre.
graining: when the outer surface is hotter than the inside of the tyre, leading to the outside rubber flexing, breaking and sticking to the tyre.
flat spot: a patch where the surface of the tyre looses its curve. this is usually caused by a driving locking up by breaking too late, meaning the tyre scrapes along the ground.
deg or degradation: refers to a steady loss of tyre performance due to general wear.

Turkey Race Week Rundown
It’s a bit of a short one this week as this weekend is a bit of an unknown and also life things have been hectic
It's time for the second of three Tilke tracks in a row, and coincidentally my favourite track in the calendar this year. We are returning to Istanbul Park for the 9th running of the Turkish Grand Prix.
The only repeat winners here are Felipe Massa (2006, 2007 2008) and Lewis Hamilton (2010, 2020)
Overview
This track is known for being one of the most flowing yet demanding tracks in modern F1, drivers love it because of how nice yet challenging it is to drive and there isn’t anything else quite like it.
It's a high downforce, tyre limited track, there are corners that are rear limited, specifically the tight twisty ones, but turn 8 is the front tyre killer
Istanbul Park is one of the few anticlockwise circuits on the calendar and because of this, the G Forces are quite tough on the drivers necks especially through the long high-speed left-hander at turn 8.
Last year there were a lot of issues with the track surface, as it had been newly resurfaced shortly before the GP, but F1 and Pirelli seem to be hoping that nearly a year on the track surface will be in better shape and be less of a slippery ice rink.
Overtaking is possible here as this is one of the tracks that was designed specifically to aid overtaking in the modern era, but that doesn’t stop the track from losing its own character, there's plenty of high speed sections and elevation changes as well as a variety of different corner types to keep the circuit interesting.
Corners to Look Out For
All of the corners in this circuit are incredible as this circuit was designed to have good racing but I want to highlight three in particular, and these three have picked up special nicknames over the years.
Turn 1 (Turkish Corkscrew): a sharp downhill left-hander immediately after the front straight, this is quite a tight corner with a hard breaking zone and as such it’ll be a possible overtaking spot for the advantageous drivers.
Turn 8 ( Diabolica): The corner is a fast, sweeping corner with four apexes, similar to one of the multi-apex sections of the old Nürburgring. The high loads exerted through this corner contribute to the circuit's reputation for rapid tyre wear. This is an incredible corner to watch the modern cars go through as they take this corner flat out but its a real test of driver skill.
Turn 11 (Faux Rouge): This corner is barely a kink in the back straight but it will have possible overtaking opportunities due to location, mainly I just included this one as I like its nickname.
Who’s at an Advantage
This is kind of a hard one to predict as we don’t have a lot of data on the modern cars around Turkey, as the conditions last year aren’t the best for analysis but in general, looking at the track characteristics I’ll give it a go.
In terms of the front runners I think Mercedes just pips it, there are a few long straights and Mercedes are typically stronger in the low speed corners, of which there are a few in Turkey, Red Bull will probably be stronger in sector two though.
I think this will be the closest fight between Ferrari and McLaren that we will see this season, there's the longish straights that suit the McLaren, but then the tight twisty corner complexes that are more suited towards the Ferrari, but tyres and strategy will be what sets them apart, I also wouldn’t be too surprised if some of the lower midfield joins their fight too.
Out of the lower midpack my money will be on Alpine, I think they have the strongest car in that category at the moment and it seems to suit the classic high downforce, twisty tracks more than the others.
If rain happens, Williams will be strongest of the backmarkers and some of the lower midfield, that car just has a really good rain set up, if not - they’ll still be topping the back markers.
My Predictions
So we already know that Ferrari plan on taking an engine penalty for Sainz, I could potentially see one of the Mercedes powered teams (McLaren, Aston Martin or Williams) taking a new engine too, as it's a good track to take a penalty on, and not as punishing as some of the next ones.
I could also potentially see there being rain in at least one session.
Strategy
Strategy is very much an unknown for this track as last year was a strange race, Pirelli are taking the C2-C3-C4 tyres, which is a step softer than last year, its a potential two stop, depending on tyre wear as there is not a huge amount of time lost in the pits, but I predict that most of the grid or the midfield at least will be doing a one stop.

FP1: Leclerc beats Verstappen to fastest time in opening French GP practice
Charles Leclerc’s French Grand Prix weekend got off to a strong start as he beat championship rival Max Verstappen to the fastest time in opening practice at Circuit Paul Ricard. The Ferrari driver clocked a 1m 33.930s on the soft tyre to finish just 0.091s ahead of the Red Bull, however Verstappen lost around two tenths of a second running wide at Turn 11 on his best lap. Carlos Sainz was more than 0.3s off the pace in third, the Spaniard facing a tricky weekend ahead after Ferrari fitted a new control electronics to his F1-75 that triggers a 10-place grid penalty. hey :) I’m pretty new to f1 so I don’t know a ton regarding car setups and everything but how do teams manage tyre deg? If they are all using the same tyre is it more about the driving style of the driver and how quickly they can warm up their tires or is it more related to the car?

On to the tyres:
So this season there are completely new tyres and I don't think anyone completely understands them not even Pirelli.
tyre deg depends on all the things that you have mentioned above, I would say it's Car and setup first and then drivers. Because some cars just eat tyres.
Setup wise the main thing is how much downforce teams are running. More downforce means the tyres are sliding around less in the high speed corners and those are the corners that destroy the tyres the most. So less downforce usually means more tyre wear.
It's less about how quickly they can get the tyres up to temp and more if they can keep the tyres in the right temperature window, neither too hot nor too cold is good. And we see that when cars are following closely, because even with the new regs and less dirty air the tyres of the following car will overheat with time. Partially because of the lost downforce and partially but because of the exhaust heat from the car in front. If parts of the tyre get too cold then you end up having things like graining.
Cars that are very oversteery and more loose in the rear are also not great on the tyres because the rear slides more which isn't good for the tyres, you want to avoid lateral forces perpendicular to the direction you are going in. And things like that cause different setups to use the fronts or the rears more. So tyre deg usually isn't the same on all four tyres. The characteristics of the different tracks also play into that, as in general tyre deg but also if it affects the fronts or the rears more.
The driver then also has an impact. In general, drivers that prefer and drive with more understeer are better at preserving their tyres. Checo is a great example for that. The other thing is keeping the tyres in the right temperature window, that's also up to the driver.
Some drivers just have styles that use more tyre in general, but they can all go into tyre preservation mode. And that means that they have to be essentially careful with whatever they do. For example, they can be more careful with accelerating out of corners, so being less aggressive on the throttle helps with the rears. Giving only gentle steering input helps with the fronts. In general making sure you don't lock up and flat spot.
If a car wants to eat it's tyres, then it's gonna eat it's tyres regardless. Max in Austria is a good example of that because he is usually really good with tyres if he isn't battling and after his first stint he wasn't battling anymore, and they still had horrific tyre deg.

Snetterton 300 Ducati Cup Rd5
Norfolk, I might as well drive to the continent;
One of the reasons why Snetterton is perhaps my least favourite circuit here in the UK. I only ever go there for the British Superbikes it seemed until this year.
Earlier in the season I raced there with North Gloucester Club, albeit on the shorter 200 circuit and the week before the national meeting I helped out on a two day event instructing for RAF Odiham motorcycle club. Both events went some way to alleviating my dislike for the place but I was still apprehensive going into last weekend.
The circuit itself is very flat and first impressions are that it is a fairly dull circuit. As a rider trying to go fast around there I can categorically confirm that is not the case. It takes a lot of effort and skill to ride Snetterton at pace, hence I’ve struggled in the past. Setting the bike up well is key and last year I found it difficult to make the bike hit apexes.
This year I have had plenty of seat time prior to Snetterton so my confidence in the bike has grown. Working with Andy from Kais since I started at national level is now paying dividends. Between us we can get the bike exactly where it needs to be based on my pace, gearing and conditions. We very rarely deviate much from the solid base set-up I have and I now have plenty of data in my little book for most circuits.
Slightly different format for this meeting. Just free practice on the Friday so used tyres and settings dialled in from previous visits. 1:59 dead was my quickest lap time in 2018 so naturally that was my target, along with at least getting in the top 15.
Forecast was for showers but we got away with it and I went within .5 of my PB and P13. Happy enough with that and I knew what I needed to work on and where.
Fresh rubber, brake pads and oil for qualifying on Saturday meant the bike felt really sharp. It had rained overnight and we were out early so making the call on tyres was key. Having looked at the circuit in various places I genuinely thought I would need wet tyres. Particularly for turn one, Riches and the long right of Coram. As much as I wanted to I resisted and rolled out on brand new Pirelli Supercorsa SC2 drys. The right call.
The only thing I didn’t do was wear my dry helmet. I chose my wet lid with a yellow Pinlock in the visor and that was key to my lap times in qualifying. I also took a last minute click of each setting off on the rear shock to soften the bike. Once I realised that the track was pretty much dry I pushed as hard as I ever have to qualify well. I think a lot of others took it steady initially due to the conditions but I quickly saw P11 on my board. Just as I felt I was falling off the pace Sam Middlemas came out of pitlane in front of me. I felt like I could’ve have passed him early in the lap but knowing how quick he is I chose to sit behind until he got going. I gladly took the tow on the next flying lap and put in a PB. I could see that on my lap timer so chose to come in and check tyre pressures and grab a drink.
Wanting to get back out before the end of session so I could do a practice start I left pitlane with just under two and a half minutes to go. Enough time to do an outlap and a flyer. Towards the end of the outlap Dean Brown caught me and I predicted, quite rightly, I’d get another good tow. He passed me as we crossed the start finish line nearly taking my left bar in the process, but as they say “rubbing is racing”. I followed him and crossed the line 1/10th quicker than my previous PB. For some reason that lap wasn’t counted though. It didn’t make any difference to the final positions so I ended up P15 with a 1:58.896. Clearly everyone else put in some quicker laps once they realised it wasn’t that damp.
Qualifying and racing in the same day is not the norm for the Ducati Cup so we didn’t have long to wait until we were out again. Fully dry, all that was required was fuel and a fresh rear tyre. I was happy enough with set-up so changed nothing.
P15 for the race I had my lap time goal but also wanted to make a real effort to get somewhere near my team mate, Salty. I have been trying all season to get there but to no avail. Lights out and I got a shocker of a start, traction control kicked in twice and I got passed by Craig Kennelly before turn one. Whilst I was trying to work out how to get by him before the hairpin I saw Jack Thompson put his hand up. I’d heard the noise on the exit of turn one and quickly realised his exhaust had shit itself. Instant thought was “shame, one less to pass!” I got by Kennelly into turn three and set about making some progress. I could see my team mate slowly disappearing and knew I had to get going. I was behind Craig Currie as we crossed the line for the second time but got a good run out of turn one and dived up the inside into the hairpin at Wilsons. I genuinely thought I wasn’t going to make the apex but managed to somehow pull it up and make it stick.
By now I could see Salty getting held up with Scott Pitchers and Dan Couzens. I pulled a similar move on Pitchers into the hairpin as he ran a bit wide. I didn’t expect him not to come back at me but his pace dropped off a bit and I didn’t see him again. I was really trying hard to catch the two in front. I was behind Salty for the remainder of the race. I did have slight concerns from lap five onwards about my bike. I got multiple whiffs of oil over the course of two laps but then I discounted my machine as I figured I wouldn’t be able to smell it myself. Early in lap nine I caught Shoubridge touring out of Palmer. As I passed him I realised I was on for a top ten finish and figured it was his bike I had been smelling. I was wrong, shortly after passing him the red flags came out for Sam Middlemas after his machine blew up at the end of the Bentley straight. Guessing that’s what I could smell. The race went back a lap to lap eight so a result was declared and I had my first top ten in the dry. Appreciate it was at the expense of others but I was riding hard and achieved another PB so I’ll take it. I also managed to keep Salty in sight which boosted my confidence somewhat.
Sunday came and after a little discussion with Salty we both decided to go up a tooth on the gearing at the rear. We both felt we were lacking a bit of initial drive out of Wilsons towards Palmer.
I managed a better start for the second race, no traction control intervention and away well. I got up to almost level with Salty by turn one but he had a slightly better line for entry so I thought better of diving up the inside. That left me behind Craig Currie again from the outset but I could tell this time he was going to be harder to pass. I got up to him on the first lap and tried my hardest to stay on his back wheel. After a good exit from Murrays onto the start straight I decided to have a go early on. I left my braking as late as I dared into turn one and went under him only to run slightly wide which left him room to cut back under me. That was the one and only chance I got as he was clearly stronger in the second race. I didn’t feel like the gearing was the right choice but I was gapping Pitchers behind me according to my board so I just kept at it. I didn’t feel like I was making mistakes but I could see the gap to Currie growing slightly every lap. I hate doing it but settling for a position is sometimes the better option, rather than pushing and falling. I did just that.
A lonely race to finish P11 but yet another PB with a good few 1:57 laps and Salty not a million miles in front.
All in all a very successful weekend personally and for the team. Good points in the Ducati Cup for both riders and a couple of podium finishes in the R&G shield secondary championship that is running this season.

What are the Sprint Race Rules?
The first of three trialled sprint races/sprint qualifying sessions is happening this weekend at the British GP but what does it actually mean for the weekend?
Format
Sprint Qualifying will be a race that is approximately 100km is distance and should last about 25 to 30 minutes, for Silverstone its going to be a 17 lap race. The idea is that it'll be a short fast paced race with drivers racing flat out (for a set number of laps) without the need to pit.
Championship points will be awarded to the top 3 finishers, with 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd, there won't be a podium ceremony but the winner of the sprint race will be awarded a trophy in Parc Ferme and be recorded as the pole sitter for Sunday's race.
The finishing order of the race will define the grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday, which will follow the usual format.
Standard Q1, Q2, Q3 qualifying will be moved to Friday 'evening' and only soft tyres will be allowed to be used in these sessions, which will allow all drivers to start on a free choice of tyres for Sundays race.
The driver who is fastest in Fridays qualifying will be named the ‘Pirelli Speed King.’
On Saturday there will be a smaller celebration in Parc Ferme similar to but not a podium celebration, the person who finishes the Sprint Qualifying session in first will be recorded as having the pole position for Sunday’s race and it’ll be recorded as a Pole for them in the record books.
Tyre Explanation
A little more of a deep dive into how the tyres will work for a Sprint Race weekend; each car will be allocated 12 sets of dry weather tyres to be used throughout the weekend (this has been reduced by one due to the loss of FP3.) They must have 5 sets of soft tyres allocated for Friday qualifying and 2 sets of any tyres for the race on Sunday.
FP1 -> drivers can use any two sets of tyres (outside of the 5 for quali and 2 for race)
Qualifying -> 5 sets of soft tyres to run
FP2 -> drivers can use one new set of tyres
Sprint Qualifying -> free choice of tyres out of allocation, teams can choose soft, medium or hard.
Race -> two sets of tyres, free choice, must run two different compounds
This totals 11 tyre sets so, there will be at least one set left over, which gives teams the possibility to switch to a two stop strategy if its necessary.
