Bedazzle the Arsenal Aguni. Come on Aguni I know you want to.

Genre: Fluff. Just two dudes being bros while bedazzling weapons.

I'm tired but also wanted to write something quick before perishing for a bit. Anyways, have some friendly bonding with rhinestones. Also, I wasn't aware that this picture below was..... a thing. Interesting, eh?

“ So, explain to me again what going on here?” Aguni asks as he stands in the corner, watching Takeru wait for the hot glue gun to heat up. Takeru looks up at his companion with a smile, and gestures to the table.

“ Isn’t it obvious?” Aguni looks at the table, which besides the glue gun held several new weapons that a group had managed to obtain from some shop, then back up at Takeru. In a bowl near the glue gun was a bunch of plastic and glass rhinestones and gems, shining a little in the light. Aguni looks back to Takeru, who was checking if the glue gun was hot enough yet, squeezing the trigger a few times.

“ So why am I here then?”

“ Well I didn’t ask for you to follow me back to my room, but here you are, standing oh so stoically in my room, watching me bedazzle a bunch of weapons.” A spurt of glue came out the tip of the gun, Takeru grinning excitedly and pulling the bowl closer and examining the rhinestones inside. “ Good question, should I go for a tropical Piña Colada look, or perhaps a simple gold stone appearance? Ooh, better yet, rainbow.” Takeru does a little bit of jazz hands, Aguni just staring at his friend before sighing.

“ I don’t exactly recommend bedazzling the weapons.” “ Why not? I’m sure some of your little militants would love it.” “ I’m not entirely sure about that.”

Takeru huffs, and beads some glue onto a decently sized red stone, pasting it onto the handle of a switchblade. “ Life deserves some sparkle, Aguni. Come on, anything can happen here, no charge or fault for a little fun! That’s one of the rules here at the Beach, after all.” He picks up another stone of the same size, putting it right next to the first.

Aguni just silently sighs, and continues to stand there watching Takeru bedazzle that one switchblade for quite a while, Takeru rather absorbed in this task. There wasn’t going to be anything Takeru needed to show up for in quite a while, so Takeru really could do this all day if he felt like it.

After an hour, Takeru finally finished the first weapon, which Takeru apparently decided to colour in a red and white sort of candy cane pattern. Now he was putting rhinestones onto a pistol, which Aguni believes is supposed to look like a cherry blossom on the side, considering how long Takeru kept looking at the browns for ones of an appropriate size, and occasionally setting aside pink ones for later.

“ Come now, sit down! I’m sure it’s getting boring just standing there~” Takeru chirps as he examines his handiwork of the branches on the pistol, occasionally holding it to check how comfortable it felt. “ I don’t mind standing.” Aguni responds, and Takeru scoffs lightheartedly, gesturing to the couch.

“ Nonsense, this’ll take forever, and standing that entire time and not enjoying yourself just sounds like a bore. Why don’t you drink something while you’re here, loosen up a little?” Aguni politely shakes his head, but he does take up on the offer to sit, although it was just to continue watching Takeru paste rhinestones and flat-bottomed gemstones onto weapons mindlessly. Takeru again offers him some alcohol, but Aguni declines once more.

“ Suit yourself!” Takeru continues to slowly bedazzle things, and Aguni just continues to watch. It was sort of peaceful, come to think of it. Takeru didn’t say much since he was more focused on his art, and Aguni never had much to say in the first place.

More time passes by the both of them, and Takeru proudly holds up the pistol. It was now covered muzzle to handle with small and medium stones that caught the light hitting them, and Aguni could easily notice the brown branches and pink stones meant to be the blossoms against the simplistic red base. “ Look at this, Aguni! Isn’t it a stud?” Aguni offers a small grunt as a reply, and that was all Takeru needed, setting it aside so it could completely dry. Takeru looks at Aguni with a smile, Aguni looking back at his friend.

“ Wanna at least try one? Come on, it’s easy for the mind! Let your brain spill out all over the ground and into the gems!" Aguni was just about to deny him again, but Takeru wasn’t having it, handing him a knife, Aguni recognizing it as a balisong. He idly swings it open with one hand, staring at the sharp edge, when Takeru hands him the bowl, still smiling like a dork. “ Come on! Join me in the bedazzlement!”

Aguni looks to his friend, then down at the weapon and small stones. Takeru scoots the gun so that it rested a little closer to Aguni whenever he needed it, now onto making a rifle into what seemed to start with pink at the top.

Aguni quickly shuts the knife, and with a slightly defeated but amused sigh, he picks up a small blue gem and grabs the glue gun, applying a bead onto the back and sticking it to the knife’s handle carefully.

“ That’s the spirit, Aguni!” Takeru chirps happily despite not looking up even once, too busy finding more pink rhinestones. Aguni just roughly hums, and slowly bedazzles a knife next to his friend.

Take Home the Gold?

Hey there, tuna booze oil. Got another Dew for you this summer. In fact, I was sitting on this one for, like, a week and a half by now. Trouble is, I’d also just picked up a bad summer cold a couple days before it, and I wanted to make sure my senses were more or less in working order. Not that my sense of smell went away per se, just my nose was that clogged with snot. Anyways, it’s finally tapering off, so why not get to that soda already~

Mountain Dew Baja Gold

Now, we did a couple Baja flavours a whole summer ago, and looks like they’re still making these. This one varies from that other one we did, Flash I think it was?, in that there is no colada to muddy this one up. It’s pure piña. God, I hope those translations are correct~

Anyways, I like pineapple soda as a general rule. Gimme a pineapple Crush, I’ll enjoy it. In fact, pineapple’s one of my favourite fruits. So I expect to actually enjoy this one. Which will make a nice change from some of the flavours we’ve reviewed around here recently~

It’s also a much richer yellow colour than the Flash one. Livin’ up to that gold standard, eh? And the art is fun too, which continues to be a thing I appreciate about this modern era of Dew. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? This random diver using SpongeBob’s house as a helmet, apparently!

All right, sense of sight covered. Touch and hearing, unnecessary. Let’s move on to smell. ...Well, remember, I am getting over a cold. I’m just not really getting a hit off this. Like, no smell. Maybe I’m not as back as I thought. But whatever, I already opened the bottle, and I know for a fact my taste isn’t impaired~

Hmm... Sharp, but not strong. Like, it’ll linger if it sits in your mouth, but how often do you just take a drink and not swallow it? Anyway, it’s not nearly as strong as pineapple Crush. If you’re going for an overtly pineapple flavour, I’d pick that. I’m not sure if it’s the Mountain Dew or the Baja that’s diluting this, or even just my cold, but it’s pretty weak in pineapple tastes. And smells. Donkey Kong would not approve.

In short, either I shoulda waited another week, or this Baja Gold is worth only silver place at best. Maybe even bronze, when you consider Fanta has a pineapple flavour too. Might recommend for those who don’t like pineapple~

My Christian Journey

This year (2018) has a been a rollercoaster ride for me; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. There are too many ups and down that, I couldn’t handle it myself (See my other blog: #DepressionAndAnxiety). I came to Church as often as I can praying and pleading for guidance during my hardships. But after going to Church I feel that something is missing, maybe my faith wasn’t strong as it was before or I became a Sunday Christian without even knowing it. So I started to have my spiritual journey.

Last August 2018 I started to attend CCF - Christ’s Commission Fellowship (August 5 to be exact). I’ve been watching their videos for the previous months especially Pastor Bong Saquing since my colleague/friend Paulo recommended it to me and I learned a lot from it and started to become curious what it’s like feels like to attend CCF. It was my first time to attend a non-Catholic Church, not culturally shookt (yes millennial) but I was welcomed with a smile from everyone; the Ushers, Church-goers, Pastor in CCF - Las Piñas was welcoming. Even though I was alone, I feel that the Holy Spirit is guiding me. The experience was intimate; from the praise songs, the discussion about the Series - Legit, everything hit me in the heart. After the service, I wanted to go to the Welcome Center but there’s no one there and out of my shyness, I decided to leave and get my coffee at my favorite Coffee Shop and re-read every Bible verse that was discussed during the service.

2nd Sunday (August 12) I was not able to attend the Service because I woke up in the afternoon (sarap matulog eh). 😅 But I watched the live broadcast of the Sunday Message Service entitled “By His Power Be His Witness”. Pastor Ricky Sarthou and Pastor Nett Gochuico discussed our purpose: Sharing the Gospel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ivAkBh3hGg&t=5s).

3rd Sunday (August 19) I woke up late again but I checked the schedule of CCF - Bay Area and found out that they have a 3 PM service. I was anxious that I will be late because it’s already 2:20 PM and I was still not able to ride a jeep but luckily through God’s will there was no traffic at the expressway. 😁 CCF - Bay Area was a bigger center, the Ushers, Church-goers, Pastor was welcoming. The Usher (I forgot to get her name so I will call her Tita) greeted me and asked if this was my first time to attend the service, I answered no but I cleared that I already attended CCF at LP. The second question that she asked if I wanted to join a D-Group, I answered yes but I cleared that I was not a member yet and I’m still a Catholic; she answered with a smile and said: “It’s okay, everybody’s welcome here”. 😊 The service that I attended was in Filipino-English, but when the worship song was played I was singing along as if I know the lyrics a long time ago. The topic was a replay of last week but I was still amazed by the story of Pastor Nett. When the service ended, Tita ushered me to the Welcome Center and Bro Caesar welcomed me and shared the gospel with the 4 of us (3 are also new to CCF, sorry I forgot their names). 😅 Bro Caesar shared the good side and bad side of the gospel. I was intrigued by his sharing that I immediately searched for it after attending the service. After searching the internet I found a similar article: God is Just (https://www.allaboutgod.com/god-is-just.htm).

4th Sunday (August 26) I attended CCF’s 34th Anniversary at CCF Center, Pasig. Just a background, I was worried if I can attend anniversary at CCF Center because I don’t have extra money left (Yes, #PetsaDePeligro feels) but I remember that I have collected new 5 peso coins in my coin box. After counting all the 5 peso coins, I decided that I will attend the anniversary at CCF Center. I left our house before 12nn because I might encounter traffic heading north. I rode MRT from Taft to Ortigas, luckily my Beep Card still has P75 load so I have extra money for transportation. 😏 After arriving at Ortigas, I checked if I can ride a jeep going to the CCF Center but the route is away so I rode a taxi. The CCF Center was huge and state of the art and a lot of people waiting for the next service. If my memory serves me well, I think I arrived at 1:30 pm so I took a seat near the Welcome Center. After the 12nn service, I entered the auditorium and seated in the center row (3rd row to be exact). The auditorium was huge, I know that it’s huge watching it from live streaming but in person, it’s much larger than expected. Everyone was busy so I decided to take pictures. As usual practice, 30 minutes before the start of service is Prayer Time. The service started with worship and everything was magical, everything was prepared well. The worship was great, all the songs are like arrows strafe into my heart then the message of Pastor Pastor Peter Tan-Chi was heartwarming. He discusses the “Grow in Christlike Compassion” which is rooted in the bible verse Matthew 28:18-20: “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” also known as “The Great Commission”. And Pastor Peter expounded that our mission is to be a Disciple of Jesus that will make Christ-committed followers. What also struck me is the quote of Pastor Peter: “The greatest tragedy is not death but life for a wrong purpose.” When Pastor Peter asked if someone wanted to promise to his life to follow Lord Jesus Christ, I raised my right hand with confidence. And that day I promised to Lord Jesus that I will surrender my life to follow Him just like a broken vessel, once lost but found, once blind but now I see the amazing grace of Jesus Christ for me. After the service, I patiently waited so that I could personally thank Pastor Bong and Pastor Peter about their impact through my Christian Faith, luckily I was able to take a picture with Pastor Bong but not with Pastor Peter because I was shy to take a picture because my turn was already over.

After the service, I went to the Welcome Center and was welcomed by one of the Ushers (sorry I forgot their names) and joined the group of 2 high school boys that are attending CCF - Elevate. He discussed "What is the Best Decision you've made in your life?" and "The 4 Important Truths that we must know". Truth #1 - God loves you and desires that you have eternal life with Him (John 3:16), have an abundant and meaningful life with Him (John 10:10). Truth #2 - Man has a sin problem that separates him from God; everyone has sinned (Romans 3:23) and the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23). He expounded that the Bible talks about Different Kinds of Death; Physical Death (Hebrews 9:27) and Spiritual Death or Eternal Separation from God (Revelation 21:8). He continues with a question “Since sin separates man from God, what is the solution to this problem?”, we answered one by one and he summarised that “We often think that Religion, Good Works, Good Morals are the solution. But there is only one solution from God” which lead to Truth Number 3. Truth #3 - Jesus Christ is God's only way to eternal life. Why? He is the only way (John 14:6), He completely paid the penalty of our sins (1 Peter 3:18), His resurrection proves that He is the Son of God, The Messiah, The Only Living Savior (Romans 1:3-4), He promises eternal life (John 3:36). Truth #4 - We must place our faith in Jesus Christ to save us; we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Based on Ephesian 2:8-9, if salvation can be expressed in a formula: Faith in Jesus + Nothing from us = Salvation. Good works are not the means to salvation, rather they are the evidence of your salvation. We show our faith in Jesus Christ by 1 - Accepting His gift of eternal life. 2 - Turning away from our sins. Surrendering our lives to Him (Romans 6:23, Matthew 16:24). God promised that you can know today that you have eternal life when you trust in Jesus (1 John 5:13). After the discussion he asks us a question “Are you willing to make a decision to trust and follow Jesus as your Lord and Savior” and we responded Yes and prayed in faith. He finally discussed if we have trusted Jesus Christ then the following things have happened to us: Your eternal life with God begins today (John 6:40). All of your sins are paid and forgiven - past, present and future sins (Colossians 1:13-14). You are a new person in God’s eyes, a new life has begun for you (2 Corinthians 5:17). You became a Child of God (John 1:12). And our session was ended with a prayer; I thanked him and my group-mates for the opportunity to share this wonderful experience at the CCF Welcome Center.

As of today, I’m still attending at CCF Bay Area every Sunday and already have my own D-Group with Kuya Glenn, John Rey and hopefully, I can serve through one of its ministry. My life is imperfect and I am not perfect, I still have my struggle until now. But as I grow, in my relationship with Jesus, He gives me the grace to resist and to overcome sin. I know that my discipleship is gonna be a long journey and my transformation is not yet complete but knowing that my entire being is not mine but God’s, my response is to give my all to Him (Yes all, even love life). Galatians 2:20 NIV says “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. Pssst, Taxi? … Boyfriend? …Wifi?

My Cuban Chronicles

It’s been 56 years since the Cuban Revolution, and the spray-painted signs all over crumbling, yet vibrant Havana won’t let you forget. Yes, stepping out of the airport and into Havana is like entering a time capsule, but there’s something more complex going on. My friends & I immediately sensed that Havana housed parallel worlds. There’s the world of the ordinary Cubans struggling daily, and that of the yuma, or foreigner, in town on a vacation. They exist simultaneously, yet rarely collide.

Cubans don’t even use the same currency as tourists, they use moneda nacional (MN). It’s worth about 24 cents to 1 CUC. MN isn’t even accepted at any of the places tourists go. All Cubans who are not in tourism have a side hustle because even doctors and engineers make 25 CUC a month (what it costs to get from the airport to the city). Taxi drivers make more than professionals. As such, you’ll find a lot of ex-engineer cabbies. Almost everyone uses the black market to get by, to get things that Americans would consider basic necessities. Many Cubans receive weekly (illegal) USB “packets” with all the new movies and more, to compensate for the lack of internet access.

As part of the emerging private sector (20% of the economy), I found that airbnb hosts were at this odd intersection, straddling the parallel worlds described above. I recommend staying with an airbnb Superhost — they can help arrange taxis for you, get you additional services like a cook, bartender, or masseuse (often the same person), and they can also call in reservations for you, which brings me to a few tips I wish I’d known beforehand.

Top Tips:

Make reservations in advance if there’s somewhere special you want to eat, especially at the following restaurants:

San Cristobal (where Jay-Z & Beyonce & Obama went)

La Guarida

I found this a bit shocking but you really do need reservations even on weeknights. Old Havana is small and there are only a handful of raved about dinner spots - this makes sense considering that regular Cubans cannot afford to go to any of these tourist spots.

Exchange your USD to EUR at the airport in the states and then exchange EUR for CUC (1 EUR = 1 CUC) at the airport in Havana - once you leave the airport, there are very few places to exchange in the city (maybe 2) and they are very slow.

Bring more than enough cash. American money is ok, but you can’t exchange USD there without a 10% fee. You won’t be able to use your credit card or withdraw money from the ATM. Budget about $100 USD a day and that should be more than enough, not including accommodation. Most meals cost about $10 and cocktails cost $3-4, and beer $2.

Off the beaten path are really cheap local bakeries selling bread to locals for $.04 a loaf and street vendors hawking fresh fruit for $.50. Street food consists of sandwiches.

As always, confirm the amount with your taxi river before getting in. There are no metered taxis. A cab from the airport to Old Havana should be about $25. It cost us $25 to get to Santa Fe from the airport as well. Both trips take about 30 min.

Before you leave, download the Cuba App from iTunes - it will work offline & the map will combine clutch. The GPS will work while your phone is on airplane mode.

Be prepared to have absolutely no wifi. There is wifi in select spots but it's usually a pain to connect.

Take the time to learn a few key Spanish phrases like:

“Necesito ir a…” means “I need to go to…”

“¿Dónde está…” when you’re asking about where something is.

“¿Cuánto cuesta?” = “How much does it cost?”

“¿Puedo ver un menú, por favor? ” which means “Can I see a menu please?” You could also say “Necesito una mesa para dos, por favor” which means “I need a table for two, please.”

To order a drink at the bar, say “Me gustaria un/a … por favor.” So if you want a beer, it would be “Me gustaria una cerveza por favor.”

My shitty Spanish was enough to get us by, but it wasn't enough to ensure things didn't go wrong when trying to iron out the details. This trip solidified my resolve to become fluent in Spanish.

The Trip

Day 1: We arrived in Havana and had dinner at the house in Santa Fe, which is a suburb (consejo popular) about 15 min. west of Havana. I was there for one of my best friend’s bachelorette party & we wanted an escape from the city and not to have to split up the group. So our house was perfect for those purposes. It was right on the water and had a small pool. They are installing an infinity pool soon, which will be amazing.

After dinner at the house, we took a taxi into Old Havana and wandered by one of many bars that was playing music, dancers spilling outside onto the cobblestone street. That was the spot where we got inadvertently hustled by a guy named Lando who told us that, “today is the salsa festival” nah, dude…everyday is a salsa festival here.

He then took us to get the “best mojitos” at an Irish pub. We took one sip and it was apparent that we were being hustled. Soon his friend joined us and we noticed them getting some kind of commission for bringing us to this bar. Then there was the whole Buena Vista Social Club fiasco - we told them we were planning to see the band and they told us they knew where we could get tickets.

They took us to Legendarios del Guajirito. It was some bogus place, overpriced and full of older, cruise ship type folk. AVOID at all costs.

Lando was charming & polite, but definitely a hustler.

Day 2: The one good thing Lando told us about was Santa Maria, a local beach about 20 min. by taxi - free chairs and umbrellas. 2 CUC for a chaise lounge.

We drank plenty of coco locos (coconuts filled with rum, $4) and jammed out with our floatable speaker. Our driver Luis chilled with us the entire day and watched our stuff in exchange for a beer or two (but I think he would've done it anyway).

That night we showed up at El Cocinero for dinner, without a reservation, and it was impossible to get a table. So, we walked to the closest restaurant, which was 1830. That place had terrible “second wedding vibes” as my friend aptly put it. The interior had a retro colonial look. The service was poor and the food was lacking, especially considering the price. I hear 1830 is known for good outdoor salsa after 10pm, however.

Afterwards, we headed to the outdoor club Don Cangrejo, on the water. The band went on at midnight. The singer was so suave and grinded his way into my heart. Regrettably, I can’t remember his name but his selfies (flashing on screen behind him) are etched into my memory.

It was weird that there were all these tables instead of a clear dance floor- people just stood up and danced at their table, or right below the stage.

They say NYC is the city that never sleeps, but I don’t think the originator of that saying has visited Havana. In Havana, the party doesn’t get started until after midnight. The clubs are dead before then so plan accordingly.

Day 3: We explored Old Havana, had drinks and a tasty bite at 304. Then toured the city in an old hot pink convertible, wandered round markets, and stumbled upon a free art gallery with some interesting pieces composed of repurposed trash and used objects.

La Bodeguita Del Medio: where the Mojito was invented and a Hemingway hangout. They play good live music (so do most places) and the Mojitos are the best. People gather outside on the street.

La Floridita: Another Hemingway hangout, equipped with Hemmingway statue at the bar. This is the home of the Daiquiri. A lot of older people, but the tasty drink was worth it.

That night, we had an amazing dinner at Doña Eutimia,a traditional restaurant in Old Havana. It’s at the end of Callejón Del Chorro, an alley full of restaurants, to the right. The food is amazing and cheap and the frozen mojito is the specialty of the house.

We had all heard about Fabrica de Arte (FAC) which is a relatively new art space right next to El Cocinero. It’s a gallery plus music venue/experiential art space. Some dudes said it was 10 CUC to cut the line - I was with 5 girls & couldn’t cut the line without paying, which we opted not to do.

We consoled ourselves by agreeing it was pretty much like a Bushwick warehouse party.

Instead, we had drinks at El Cocinero’s rooftop - so many people from Brooklyn!!

El Cocinero is an old cooking oil factory in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana.

Day 4: Viñales day trip - countryside about 2 1/2 hours away.

Taxi there and back: 100 CUC

We went horseback riding through limestone hills and tobacco fields. Our tour included tasting honey made by bees underground, rum with a special type of guava only found in that region of Cuba, a coffee farm, a lake, and a cave.

(A 4-hour tour for 20 CUC per person; cave entry 2 CUC.)

We had a true farm-to-table lunch & the best piña colada i have ever had in my life.

When we got back, we had dinner across from 304, at FRENTE. Unfortunately, they had rude service. The food was good, but they’d run out of all the seafood on the menu (we got there around 10pm).

Although I wasn’t able to perforate the tourist parallel world and experience life like a local and I came away with more questions than answers, I still have a fondness for the self-reliance I saw and tremendous kindness I experienced.

How to Road Trip Around Oahu

I didn’t know much about Oahu before I visited. Everyone told me it was worth it for Pearl Harbor but to spend the rest of my time elsewhere in Hawaii. Maui and Kauai were where the action was, they said.

But Oahu was home to Honolulu’s international airport from which I was catching an onward flight to Taiwan. Since I had limited time, going to multiple islands wasn’t feasible.

Fortunately, after spending a full week on Oahu, I can say this: everyone was wrong.

Maybe they just let their preconceived notions get the better of them.

Or maybe they just didn’t give the place a chance.

But, whatever the reason, I’m here to tell you that Oahu has some magic to it. Sure, it’s quite developed, has terrible traffic, and huge crowds. And yeah, maybe it’s not as “raw” as the other islands (I assume that’s why people like them).

But there are plenty of spots in Oahu where you can live that Hawaiian dream

I spent a week round-tripping the island (which, given how small it is, turned out to be quite easy). My plan was simple: sit on a beach as long as I could, eat my body weight in poke (diced raw fish, pronounced “po-keh”), and hike.

Along the way, I also binged on shrimp, drank the best piña colada of my life, and took notes so you can do even better when you visit!

Driving Oahu: A Road-Trip Itinerary

First, a tip: if you’re driving around Oahu, go counterclockwise from Honolulu, since most of the food trucks you’ll want to stop at are on the ocean side of the highway as you go up the east coast. So going in that direction just makes it easier to pull off the road and try all the food trucks that line the highway (and there are a lot). There’s also more to do on the east side of Oahu, so it’s best to start there.

That said, I actually don’t think a traditional road trip is the best idea. Oahu is smaller than you think — you can drive end to end in under two hours — so everything listed below can really be done as a day trip from one base or another, which will save you packing and unpacking, as well moving from place to place too often (especially since the east and west coasts don’t have a lot of affordable accommodations).

Base yourself on the North Shore for a couple of days and then in Honolulu (in the south) for a couple of days (or vice versa).

Day 1: Honolulu to Kailua (28 miles)

Pick up your rental car, head out of Honolulu (you’ll be back later), and start off at Hunauma Bay in southeast Oahu. You can spend a few hours there snorkeling and relaxing on the beach before heading to the nearby Halona Blowhole Lookout for the view and Makapu‘u Point (Oahu’s easternmost point) for a short hike. There are also plenty of beaches, food trucks, short hikes, and viewpoints along the way to Kailua, where you’ll want to stay the night.

Where to Stay: Airbnb is the best option, since there aren’t many hotels or hostels in Kailua. Book early though, as there isn’t a lot to choose from.

Day 2: Kailua to Haleiwa (50 miles)

Start your morning with the famous Lanikai Pillbox hike just south of Kailua, where you can get sweeping views of the ocean and the cities and beaches on this side of the island. The hike is short (it only takes about 20-30 minutes) but steep, so wear appropriate shoes.

If you have some time in the morning, Kailua and Lanikai beaches are both beautiful (they’re right next to each other and on the way from the pillbox hike). Not a lot of people, white sand, blue water. They’re heaven.

As you leave this area to head north, visit the Ho‘oamaluhia Botanical Garden (it’s free!), which is also home to a lake filled with tropical plants.

Afterward, drive up the east coast toward the North Shore. Along the way, you can stop at the Kualoa Ranch, where many movies have been filmed. If you do a tour, I suggest the 90-minute Hollywood Movie Sites Tour (which includes scenes from Jurassic Park!), as you don’t need much more time than that to see the ranch. (It’s expensive, though, so if you’re on a budget, I’d skip it.)

As you keep going north, you’ll find a ton of beaches and hikes (there are plenty of signs for everything). I really enjoyed the Hau’ula Loop Trail especially, which is about 10 miles north of Kualoa. It’s a really overgrown trail, so you’ll feel like you’re very much in the jungle (meaning you’ll also need to bring bug spray). And like most hikes here, there’s a scenic viewpoint!

Then drive around the northern tip of Oahu to Haleiwa, your base of operations while on the North Shore.

Where to Stay: Airbnb is again the best option, as there aren’t many hotels or hostels in Hal‘eiwa. Book early here too.

Days 3 & 4: North Shore (Base: Haleiwa)

This was my favorite part of Oahu. It was Hawaii the way you imagine it should be: a lot quieter, less touristy, and less developed. And it had that whole “hippie vibe” going for it. Everyone up here was much more laid back than down south.

You can learn to surf here (two-hour lessons begin at just $80 USD) or hike the Ka‘ena Point Trail (west of Haleiwa) and/or the ’Ehukai Pillbox (east of Haleiwa). The latter is pretty muddy, so bring appropriate shoes.

Haleiwa itself is a sleepy little tourist town with a bunch of restaurants, shops, and parks. There’s not much to do in the town itself than eat and window shop.

If you do just one hike, though, I definitely recommend the Ka‘ena Point Trail, which was one of the best experiences I had. It’s a scenic two-hour coastal walk to the northwestern tip of Oahu, where you will find a protected biological area with seals and native birds. At the tip, you can see all the way down the west side of the island — a magical view. Bring sunscreen and water, as the whole trail is exposed to the sun.

Day 5: Dole Plantation, Oahu’s West Side, Honolulu (60 miles)

Head south (inland) and stop at the Dole Plantation. While it is super cheesy and touristy (I mean, so many useless souvenirs!), it does have a cool maze, and there’s a train ride through the farm that, while whitewashing a lot of bad things, was an interesting look at the importance of the pineapple to Oahu. For a general overview geared to your average tourist, it was surprisingly informative.

Afterward, continue south toward Honolulu and then head west on the H1 road to the west coast for some deserted local beaches, such as Ma’ili, Ewa, Makua, or Yokohama. Stop at Countryside Café for some incredible diner food. The portions are pretty large, so you can share them.

Then head back into Honolulu, as there’s not a lot of accommodation along the west coast. If you do want to stay longer, you’ll find some listings on Airbnb and Booking.com if you book far in advance. Otherwise, there are a few hotels in Kapolei if you don’t want to drive all the way to Honolulu.

Days 6 & 7: Honolulu

I actually liked Honolulu a lot (the main beach area of Waikiki is a tourist trap though.) While downtown is a bit bland, other neighborhoods are filled with awesome stores, breweries, bars, restaurants, and art galleries. Be sure to check out the “hip” Kaka‘ako part of town in particular.

Consider going on a hike on Diamond Head, a volcanic cone on the east side of town. It offers an incredible view of the city, though it’s one of the more popular trails in the area so if you aren’t there early enough to beat the crowds you’ll basically be walking in a slow-moving line up the mountain. If you are short on time, skip it.

Other Things to Do:

A free walking tour with Hawaii Free Tours (call ahead, since they only run when they have bookings).

Pearl Harbor – This is a must. It’s not even up for debate. You have to go.

Iolani Palace, the former royal residence of Hawaii’s monarchs.

Soak in the sun on Waikiki Beach or other nearby beaches, such as Ala Moana, which is popular with locals.

There’s also an Islamic art museum, which is supposed to be great, but I didn’t make it there.

The Beach – This hostel is right on the beach, includes free breakfast, and has plenty of space to relax and meet other travelers.

Polynesian Hostel Beach Club Waikiki – The accommodation here is basic, but the staff are super friendly and helpful, and they organize lots of events.

Waikiki Beachside Hostel – A fun, social hostel that hosts live music. Breakfast is included too.

Additionally, head to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel for the best piña colada of your life. It’s not cheap ($15 USD a pop), but it is sooo good! Every one of my friends who didn’t order one got it as their second drink. (Fun fact: My grandfather was stationed in Oahu during WWII and went back to Oahu often. The Royal Hawaiian was his favorite hotel. It’s pretty cool that it’s still there!)

Average costs

How much do things cost on Oahu? Here are some typical prices (in USD):

Airbnb – $100+/night for a one-bedroom or studio

Hotel – $175–250/night for a mid-range boutique hotel

Hostel dorm – $27

Car rental – as low as $20/day, plus insurance

Gas – $3–3.50/gallon

Poke bowl – $12–15

Takeout meal – $10–14

Sit-down meal at a fancy restaurant (with drinks) – $50+

Budget Tips

Oahu is pretty expensive. Most everything has to be imported, so if it can’t be grown nearby or caught in the ocean, expect to pay a lot. But it’s not impossible to save money. Here are a few ways to cut your expenses:

Hike and enjoy the beaches. Nature is free!

Buy your own food from supermarkets so you can cook your own meals or have picnics. Sure, there are plenty of world-class restaurants here, but if you want to keep your food costs down, you should cook some meals. The poke at supermarkets is delicious anyway!

If you do eat out, hit the food trucks. Most cost around $10 USD for a meal — much cheaper than sit-down restaurants.

If you’re going to buy alcohol, do so at Japanese markets, where you can find beer for only $2–3 USD (compared to $8 USD at bars).

Skip ride-sharing websites like Getaround or Turo (where you rent cars from private owners). The Dos and Don’ts of Low-Calorie Cocktails, According to Dietitians

America loves a good drinking trend. And of our latest collective obsessions, one that’s sunk its teeth deep into the drinks world is wellness culture.

Under this health halo lie drinkers’ desires to find beverages that won’t up their daily calorie intakes. Whether it’s Keto-friendly cocktails, athletic beers, or, worse, “clean” wine (we have thoughts), our calorie budgets are having an increasing impact on our drink choices.

Of course, the healthiest cocktail is no cocktail at all — but that doesn’t mean a healthy lifestyle is out of reach from your home bar. Some drink choices are better than others for those trying to shed or maintain their weight, or simply to fit moderate drinking into their low-cal lifestyles.

To figure out which cocktails are best for health-conscious imbibers, VinePair talked to registered dietitians about the dos and don’ts of choosing and making low-calorie cocktails.

Does Living Healthfully Mean Refraining From Drinking?

Registered dietitian Cynthia Sass says not necessarily. “There are more options now than ever for alcoholic beverages that aren’t loaded up with sugar, excess carbohydrates, and unwanted chemicals,” says Sass. As the healthy-living trend has migrated over to the drinks world, it’s not uncommon to find cocktails and hard seltzers touting their natural or organic ingredients — and home bartenders can use fresh fruits, juices, and herbs to create their concoctions.

Maryann Walsh, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, agrees that cocktails can be a part of a healthy lifestyle, but reminds those with weight-loss or maintenance goals “that alcohol contributes calories, and to factor that into [their] calories for the day.”

The Art of Choosing Low-Cal Cocktail Ingredients

Joy Bauer, health and nutrition expert for NBC’s “Today” show and best-selling author of “Joy Bauer’s Superfood!” says that “there are always ways to trim and lighten up your favorite cocktails.”

The key for weight-conscious home bartenders is choosing fresh, low-calorie ingredients, Bauer says. She recommends making drinks with simple recipes and natural ingredients, such as Margaritas with fresh fruits, rather than with “sugary mixes and syrups.”

In a bind, Walsh suggests checking the sugar content of pre-made mixes before buying, as those can contribute significantly to calorie content. When you don’t have time to make a Marg from scratch, she recommends trying “bottled skinny Margarita, such as Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl Margarita available at most liquor and wine retailers.”

Another surprising caloric ingredient? Tonic water. Though many consumers “assume that tonic water and soda water are the same thing,” Sass explains that tonic water contains added sweeteners, making a 12-ounce can amount to 120 calories and over 30 grams of sugar.

When choosing mixers, Walsh says, pick sugar-free options like soda water, fresh citrus fruit, or diet soda. But if you don’t have time to make your drinks from scratch, she says, “there are some great mixers out there by companies like Swoon; these are made with monk fruit, which is a non-nutritive sweetener that doesn’t contribute to calories.”

Walsh also explains that extra-boozy drinks are often high in calories, as alcohol itself can be quite caloric. A “vodka Martini with 3 ounces of vodka would clock in at around 210 calories or higher,” Walsh says, while a typical Negroni contains 195 calories.

Bauer points out that “sweeter and creamier varieties” of alcohol, such as Baileys Irish Cream, schnapps, and crème de menthe, can be especially caloric.

Drink Mindfully, Not Guiltily

Counting calories doesn’t mean you can only drink vodka soda. Sass says her “go-to is a Margarita made with high-quality tequila mixed with fresh-squeezed organic lime juice, and a half a shot of orange liqueur, in a glass rimmed with pink Himalayan sea salt and garnished with fresh lime.”

Simple Bloody Marys, spritzes made with wine and sparkling water, and mixed drinks made with 100 percent fruit juice are other tasty, low-calorie options approved by these professionals.

There are some drinks that calorie-conscious drinkers should avoid, however. Sass encourages steering clear of cocktails made with dairy products, such as cream, including the White Russian and the Mudslide (though we at VinePair think these delicious drinks make for ideal treats every now and again).

Frozen drinks, like Piña Coladas, Daiquiris, Mai Tais, and Margaritas, can be “total sugar bombs,” Walsh adds. These drinks can contain up to 500 calories a pop, so she urges drinkers to “enjoy them sparingly.”

In the end, fresh is best. If you use real fruit to sweeten your frozen cocktails — such as Bauer’s healthified Piña Colada and frosé recipes on her website, which are made without any added sugar — there’s room for these drinks in a balanced diet.
