The New Roommates Visit the Parks
It was a stressful time in 1022 - an upstairs apartment at the very front of The Commons complex. Boxes still needed to be unpacked and the fridge already needed to be reorganized, but all of us were starting to feel drained. The spring program had just started and we were all already over worked and stressed out. Dana, Jen, and I had a day off together in the middle of the week, and decided that the unpacking and cleaning could wait. We needed a day of magic - a reminder of what we came to Walt Disney World for.
So, one chilly January afternoon, we headed over to Magic Kingdom for the Festival of Fantasy parade and a chance to get to know each other better. I had seen FOF once or twice, but hadn’t really gotten into it. Honestly, parades had never been my thing. The only day parade at Disneyland that I ever purposefully stopped to watch was Soundsational. Most times, it was something to be avoided and the best times to go on rides. This was also true of shows like Fantasmic! and the fireworks. The group of friends I typically went with didn’t go to Disneyland specifically for the shows. CP’s and Annual Passholders are pretty different in that regard. The CP obsession with things like Dream Along with Mickey, FOF, and Wishes was something I honestly couldn’t comprehend, and I think it’s because the Annual Passholder culture still lingered inside me quite a bit. I had casually mentioned to Dana that I enjoyed FOF but didn’t LOVE FOF - an answer that was absolutely unacceptable in her mind. So away we went… to the Festival of Fantasy.
Dana was a pro at getting to Magic Kingdom in time for the day parade. Day parades at Walt Disney World step off at 3:00pm. They start in Frontierland and work their way down Main Street. We hopped on the ferry to get to Magic Kingdom not long before 3:00pm, but Dana wasn’t worried. We headed through bag check and found a spot along Main Street with time to spare. She had clearly done this before.
The Festival of Fantasy parade was soon near us. “Hear ye, hear ye!” bellowed from the speakers as it got closer, announcing the parade’s arrival. Standing there on Main Street as the parade passed by, with my brand new roommates standing next to me, my love for the college program returned. After a week of regretting all my choices to be there, it was the first time since the extension that I felt good about it. In four months, the whole thing was going to be over, and I needed to make the most of it. It helped that Dana was singing along excitedly throughout the entire parade. Being the incredibly empathetic person that I am, I tend to absorb other people’s energies. Since she was over the moon and filled with magic, I soon felt the same. And that’s how my love for Festival of Fantasy happened. Staring down Main Street as Maleficent breathed fire and the smell of popcorn filled the street, I fell in love with it. It wasn’t long before I also knew all the words and the order of the parade.
Completely taken over by the magic of the parade, we danced down Main Street to the nearest photographer. We wanted to document our first trip to the park together well, so we got to a PhotoPass photographer for some pictures. At the time, all of us were feeling slightly salty about our college program. Dana had just come from working at Cosmic Ray’s, which was an exhausting Quick Service Food and Beverage position in Magic Kingdom that wore her out. She had switched over to Attractions for her second program, and was training to work at Spaceship Earth. While Cosmic Ray’s had some pros, Dana was happy to have a new position and was ready to love her job with all her heart. Jen worked in Disney Springs in Merchandise. She liked her job quite a bit, especially when it came to making caramel apples, but hadn’t gotten as much of a chance to explore the parks like she wanted to. Meanwhile, I couldn’t stand my job. My leaders were just starting to notice that I cared about things getting done, and therefore put me in charge of things that I wasn’t getting paid to be in charge of. When I asked if I could become a trainer or a coordinator, or even just a general teller (helping with money-related things), they told me that they couldn’t trust a CP with these responsibilities. Each day I came back to work though, they gave me those responsibilities and I was getting tired of being taken advantage of. This led to me being slightly salty about the college program. It was becoming more and more obvious to me that it really was about Disney getting full time employees without giving them full time benefits. While it was a fantastic opportunity, Disney’s intentions bothered me. (I have mixed feelings about the college program after completing two programs. I’ll talk about it in more detail another time.) This backstory is important because after we got our picture in front of the castle, the PhotoPass photographer prepared us for a Magic Shot. A Magic Shot is where you pose a certain way, and then a character or prop will pop up for a visit when you go back to view your picture. When we pulled up our picture, a glitch had caused the Magic Shot to fail, so we were all excitedly showing off nothing (that was supposed to be Tinker Bell).
Being the bitter jokester that I am, I laughed and said we could easily be a meme that read “What I got out of the Disney College Program”. (Before I go further and all the people who are super in love with the DCP attack me, I’ll repeat that this was a joke.) We joked that we were going to make a side by side of us with Tinker Bell and us without her. The one with Tinker Bell would say “What I expected” and the one without would say “What I got”. I don’t think any of us actually felt that way. In fact Jen extended her program a second time so she could stay through the summer and Dana is going back for the summer alumni program this coming May. The college program is what you make of it, but at the time it was a nice comic relief for what had been a pretty stressful week.
Slowly but surely, our day became about doing things we hadn’t ever done before. We stood in line for the Barnstormer, a kid coaster in Storybook Circus that I hadn’t ever been on, and talked about how we hadn’t ever ridden on the Walt Disney World railroad. I don’t know why, but that train is constantly down for refurbishment. As soon as we were done with the Barnstormer, we hopped on the train towards Main Street.
While we were on the train, we talked about what characters we had yet to meet and how Baymax was now in EPCOT. I had met him once at Disneyland back when Big Hero 6 was first released, but only had a picture with him and my ex. I was very much interested in getting a new one. We spontaneously park hopped to EPCOT, and headed over to meet Baymax.
Baymax was hanging out in Future World in his own little character spot. Half of the room that he was in hid behind a wall, where we knew Joy and Sadness were preparing to meet guests. It didn’t take us long to get through the line, and we were soon meeting Baymax and doing his special fist bump.
I’m slightly awkward when it comes to meeting characters. I never really know what I’m supposed to say or do. Whenever I see other people post pictures with characters, it always looks so natural, like they’re taking a picture with an old friend. The captain is always boasting about something adorable that happened during the “conversation” and I’m always left wondering if it was made up or if they’re just way better at interpreting hand gestures. I’ve had one amazing character interaction and it was with a character I knew nothing about. I’ll tell that story another time, but at that point, I really had no idea what to say to characters. This interaction for example was followed by an awkward silence as we all got our individual pictures, then gathered together for a group photo which is somehow even more awkward than the picture above. Meeting characters is always something I wanted to be in to, but I’m just too socially awkward for it. My best recommendation for those who are like me (because I doubt I’m alone in my inability to have conversations with characters who only communicate with hand gestures) is to just go for it. Meet the ones you want to meet. They’re used to us awkward folk. Some will try to make the conversation less awkward by doing most of the talking. Others will focus primarily on the picture and then say their goodbyes. Whatever the case, definitely do it. If I were to ever find myself in a position where I could go to the parks all the time, I’d definitely do more character meet and greets.
Our night in the parks ended and we took one last picture with Dana’s new home before saying goodbye.
This is one of the rare moments in EPCOT’s life where there’s nothing going on in the front planter. EPCOT is home to the International Food and Wine Festival and the Flower and Garden Festival. They also do something over Christmas and have started a new Art Festival. I personally think that their goal is to have something going on year round. As much as I love all the festivals, it was nice to be there when there wasn’t so much going on so you could truly appreciate each country. It’s also always nice to see EPCOT in a natural state.
The day turned out perfect, although it wasn’t anything like what we expected. What turned into an afternoon at Magic Kingdom just to see Festival of Fantasy, turned into an adventure of doing things we hadn’t done before. I am so glad that I was able to ignore my responsibilities for a day and go out and have fun. I think I really needed that reminder of why I was in Central Florida: to do all the things I hadn’t done during my first program. To have extra time to figure out where I wanted to be after the program since I had already graduated college. Dana and Jen were super helpful people to be around during a time in which I was incredibly discouraged about staying, because they made me realize how lucky I was to be there. Extending was harder on me than I thought it would be, but I’m thankful for my roommates who were always there to remind me that magic is real.

To Neverland!
Hello world, Welcome to my Disney College Program Blog!
My name is Keila, I’m 21 years old and I’m an Audiovisual Production student at the University of Puerto Rico. As most kids I grew up watching Disney’s Animated films and felt in love with them since the very beginning. Years passed and my love for films became my passion and hopefully one day it would be my job as my aim is to work for Pixar’s Production Department, but before I get there I must start with baby steps and that’s when the Disney College Program (DCP) comes into the picture.
I decided to apply for the DCP not only because it offers you endless possibilities from gaining work experience, learning how a corporation functions, making new friends, to expanding your networking, but because it also opens you the doors to a World Class Company.
Last semester I applied for this year’s Spring season but unfortunately I was not offered a position for the term. Even though I was kind of sad, especially as my friend Marlene (with whom I planned on rooming) got accepted, I didn’t lose hope and decided to reapply and was lucky enough to get my top role: Photopass Photographer.
Through my posts I’ll be documenting my whole experience as a Cast Member during the Fall Advantage 2014 (May 19th-January 5th) season at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
I hope you’ll join me in this wonderful journey, the “Adventure is out there” let’s get it started!
“So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Never Never Land!”
Have a magical day!
