AlmerĂa day 1
A very early start this morning to head over to the cathedral and meet the lady who will give us our accreditation. I did grumble a bit that it was strange she met you so early in the morning it was still dark 🙄
After waiting for a bit Jose re-read the message and guess what, it was meant to be 7:15pm not am 😫 Jose was so convinced everyone used the 24 hour clock here he didn’t read the message properly.
We consoled ourselves with some breakfast and then headed back to the apartment as everything was still closed. It’s strange that here down south everything opens later. Given how hot it gets I would have thought they’d open early 🤔
After calls to our Mums we headed out again to do some shopping. A trip to the local market is always fun and we found a great bakery near us too 😋
This afternoon we chilled out, didn’t want to do too much as after this it gets pretty full on. Jose did however have a much needed haircut.
Late this afternoon we headed back to the cathedral for the 7:15pm meeting to get our accreditation, etc. I am so glad we did this. The lady here in Almeria who organises the pilgrims is delightful. We met other pilgrims, including a lady from Perth. It seems this route us gaining in popularity, 18 pilgrims left yesterday.
We decided to attend the blessing of the pilgrims. It’s very easy to think of this as a hike and forget the intent of the Camino. I am not religious but was quite moved by the blessing of the pilgrims and the earnestness of Nely.
Having said that I did feel quite guilty knowing that having been blessed we were about to embark on essentially a pub crawl. A guide that Jose has found describes the best bars and food along the Camino. Almeria is pretty much the home of tapas to accompany your drink (i.e free food). One of the recommended bars didn’t open until 8:30pm so we went to another one first. I couldn’t believe how that bar went from closed pre 8:30 to pretty much eating and drinking being a contact sport within 45 minutes.
A fun night and having spent A$50-60 we almost walked a straight line home. I love southern Spain, unfortunately it’s too hot to live here.

They say that sharing is caring, and we couldn’t agree more. Here’s just a few tapas joints you need to check out for your next date night (and yes, we’ve bent the rules a little as to what exactly constitutes tapas).

Day trip to Figueres
Up early again, but thankfully not as early as yesterday. We walked up to where we catch the bus and had time for breakfast before the bus arrived. It was cooler this morning and I spent most of the day wishing I’d brought a jacket rather than a thin cardigan.
It’s about an hour trip to Figueres and then about a 10 minute walk past the markets (which were on today and looked good) to the police station. We were there all of about 5 minutes and walked out with our required paper work and over 4 hours to kill until the next bus home.
We went for a coffee and managed to relax now we had solved our immediate problem and decided it wasn’t such a bad thing to have time in Figueres. We’ve been here twice before (excluding yesterday). The first time we visited the Dali Museum and then continued on to Roses. The second time you may recall was when we first arrived last year and encountered a thoroughly unhelpful policeman who was already saying no before we’d barely opened our mouths - you can imagine how thrilled we were to have to come back here.
Anyway today we now had the opportunity to stroll around and get to know the town. It’s actually very nice and good shopping (some Christmas shopping was done). It could almost become our Girona substitute except it doesn’t have a Nespresso shop and I really like Girona too. We’ll have to alternate.
Still with 1.5 hours to go we headed for an early lunch. Jose had spotted a bar with great tapas so we had a nice relaxed lunch before catching the bus home.
This afternoon we started to pack in earnest. We thought it was about time given this time next week we’ll be in Perth. Now that we have to come back in a December we’ve had to rethink some of our packing and don’t need to worry about packing up the apartment.
Given we had lunch out we decided to skip our anchovy tapas tonight so stayed in for nibbles and dinner. We’re slowly emptying the fridge.

PANDACOTTA 🐼🌱🍮🥥: Pandan Infused Pannacotta. Salted Coconut Crumble. Lime Coconut Granita (gfo); aud 15 from @neho_perth Neho, Victoria Park. The signature and the mainstay. I’ve heard about this dessert for ages and it’s been on my to-eat-list for ages. It certainly lived up to its reputation - panna cotta was so jiggly and perfectly balanced - love the freshness of the lime coconut granita too. ❤️😋 #Neho #VictoriaPark #NehoPerth #ModernAsian #AsianFusion #Perth #PerthFood #PerthAsian #Pandan #PannaCotta #PandaCotta #PerthFoodReview #PFR_AsianFusion #PFR_Neho (at Neho Asian Tapas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdspxSrvWwg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's annoying when your new goth haunt has a building sold to new owners, and the new owners are going to turn the place into a fucking tapas bar of all things. We already have quite a few of those silly places in Perth, where both the cocktails and food are often ridiculously overpriced. It goes to show, once again, that Perth only cares for rich people and hipsters, not any actually valid subculture that makes Perth actually an interesting place to be. I'm both sad and furious about this.

Cheapest beer in perth
Tumblr media
The Australian city of Perth is an interesting blend of inventiveness, cash (because of the mining blast) and a decided freedom that originates from the way that a large portion of the country's other significant urban areas are a five-hour flight away. You should see it : African food in perth
Guests to Perth are in for a treat, with each sort of food and drink understanding on offer, from five-star eateries to enticing wine bars and bistros that take advantage of the city's in the open air atmosphere. Here are the absolute best in the most fascinating neighborhoods:
For a bar you'll never need to leave, put Must Winebar, in the foodie region of Highgate, on your rundown. It doesn't put a foot wrong. There's quality wine, first rate tapas, a loose yet cosmopolitan climate and an extremely friendly group. What's not to cherish?
In case you're searching for a bistro where supportability matters, rush toward Source Foods in advancing Northbridge. The spotless, contemporary lines of the stylistic layout are an ideal fit with the straightforward goodness on offer on the menu.
To see an ace culinary expert at work, go to Shige Sushi Bar in South Perth. The stylistic layout is essential, if credible, yet the food is wonderful. Acclaimed Sydney restaurateur Tetsuya Wakuda is supposed to rate it profoundly and other sushi fans will joyfully agree. Chief Experience Officer, Verity Byth's insider's tip, is "sit up at the bar, offer Shige-san a glass of your wine, watch and learn. There's no place else like it." You should see it : Soft Drinks in perth
For an incredible find even local people don't think about take your companions to Annalakshmi on the Swan at the Barrack Street Jetty. Hardly any eateries run totally on affection, yet this one does. They gracefully fantastic home-style Indian vegan food, you "eat as you need, give as you feel", making a deliberate gift for the supper. The prime stream sees are a reward.
To see the eventual fate of Perth's bistro culture make the excursion to Fremantle, where Tonic is a guide of contemporary plan and food, giving throughout the day morning meals and incredible reasonable exchange espresso. The beautiful hand-painted screens are by the proprietor, Vicky.
For more incredible encounters in Perth and other Australian and worldwide urban areas. There's food, shopping (style, home, storeroom, books and music), inns, displays and show scenes and substantially more.

We were recently invited to a Scottish wedding in Edinburgh so decided to have an extended trip and explore the City and surrounding areas.  Edinburgh was a first for both of us so we had lots to explore.
Arriving from Perth through Doha straight into Edinburgh was brilliant.  Travelling on Qatar airways was fantastic.  Doha airport is out of this world, like another planet, so airy and spacious.  We spent a relaxing hour or two here.
Some of the amazing sculptures around Doha Airport
We stayed at Apex Grassmarket Hotel and had a room overlooking the Grassmarket.  We had such a nice view of the castle as well.  Edinburgh is such a great city for walking around and there’s so much interesting history here.  There is a big French influence as we found out from all the restaurants we ate in.  This must come from Mary Queen of Scots who grew up in France. Over the next couple of days we walked our feet off enjoying all the sights of Edinburgh.  In between our stay we also hired a car to explore what we could of Scotland. Our first port of call was of course the magnificent Edinburgh Castle.

There are so many tours around but we decided to go at our own pace and be free to roam wherever we liked.
Next up was the very pretty Dean Village which is about 20 minutes walk from Edinburgh Castle.  This is a heritage listed village and well worth a visit.

Next up we had a bit of lunch in a lovely little French restaurant called Escargot Bleu, it was French right down to the waiters and chef!
To walk off this wonderful lunch we headed to Holyroodhouse Palace and the gallery.  This was one of my favourite places, very old and beautiful.  Gorgeous garden and also enjoyed walking around the rooms.  I didn’t realise that this is the Queen’s official residence in Edinburgh so is very much a working palace.  Even that night Princess Anne was flying in for a formal dinner with the University.
Holyroodhouse Palace
Holyroodhouse Palace was founded by David I in 1128 as an Augustinian monastery in 1128. In 1501 James IV built a Palace for himself and his bride, Margaret Tudor – the sister of Henry VIII and the grandmother of Mary, Queen of Scots.  Mary spent much of her later turbulent years here and was married twice from here.
The arches of the ruined abbey
From the gardens
One of the walls still standing
This place was definitely a must see for me and if you’re a history buff then you shouldn’t miss it.
One thing I loved about Edinburgh were all the quirky little alleyways and the names above them.
One rainy afternoon we had lunch in the lobby of The Scotsman Hotel.  A beautiful baroque building dating back to 1905 and was once the home of The Scotsman Paper.
A few more photos of street scenes below.

The famous pierced lady who claims to be the most pierced human – I don’t think she’s lying!
Two “wee” scottish boys dressed for the “Independence for Scotland” march
The famous Greyfriars’ Bobby – a skye terrier who guarded his master’s grave for 14 years.
The famous West Bow Street
Cobblestone alleyway
We also found time for a quick walk around Greyfriars Kirkyard.  Still an active church with a famous burial ground going back to the 16th century.  It was very hard to actually read the names on all the plaques.
The details on this grave are very intricate
As I mentioned there are some fabulous restaurants in Edinburgh and below are some of the ones we tried:
Angels with Bagpipes Le Bistro Cafe Anduluz Vittoria on the Bridge Divino Enoteca
Also some of the photos from those restaurants Angels with Bagpipes
Hake cooked with capers, golden raisins, salsify, parsley root, rainbow chard
Finishing off dinner with a Scottish whiskey of the moment!
Tapas from Cafe Anduluz

I would definitely recommend a visit to Edinburgh if you’ve never been before, we had the best time and clocked up many steps on our walking apps!

NEHO 🥩🦆 // first time trying @neho_perth Neho Asian Tapas in Victoria Park. Menu on last few pics. Ordered the following savoury dishes to share: - TEA SMOKED DUCK $33: Oolong Tea Smoked Duck Breast. Scallion Egg Pancake. Pickled Cucumber. Plum Hoisin (df) - RENDANG SHORT RIB $46: 36 Hour Beef Short Ribs. Rendang Curry. Toasted Coconut (df) Used the @entertainment_au offer here with 25% off the bill (up to $35). The tea smoked duck indeed had a strong tea-smoked flavour (some places say the meat is smoked but there’s no smoked flavour) and was pink. It’s a twist with the scallion egg pancake which was enjoyable. Rendang short rib was incredibly tender and juicy - loved this though the curry is quite sweet and not really a traditional rendang - this curry seems more Thai-style than Malaysian/Indonesian curry. #Neho #VictoriaPark #Asian #AsianFusion #Perth #PerthFood #PerthAsian #BeefRib #Duck #TeaSmokedDuck #Rendang #Curry #PerthFoodReview #PFR_AsianFusion #PFR_Neho (at Neho Asian Tapas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdiCH7bPmd5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
