Then and Now- Family Trees

As I have progressed with the #thenandnow pathway project at @strodefad​ I have had to make some important ethical decisions as I decide which parts of my story to share and how I share them. Whilst I have freedom of speech to say what I want, I am also mindful that some of the memories that are being explored could be triggering, or involve people still living who will be clearly identifiable.

I decided to express one period of my childhood as a #genogram to express the changes and turmoil I experienced when both parents remarried and had new families in the space of a few years , and for my experiences of living with an alcoholic parent I chose to pay tribute to #pablopicasso with a #pencilandwash image of a mother and children with the mother nurturing her cider and cigarettes. The wash is mulled wine as I wanted to incorporate alcohol as part of the image. I chose Sepia pencil to make the drawing as it is a distant memory like the old sepia print photographs or  print negatives

As the project is primarily a textiles one,  the Cider is emphasised by stitching into the paper, a technique demonstrated by the artist Izziyana Suhaimi, who combines mixed-media drawings and embroidery to create beautiful mixed media portraits. She draws figures then stiches into them  to add colour and texture.

By creating these images into this predominantly textiles based project it has enabled me to find some closure, and has led to other creative responses to process traumatic memories including poetry, spoken word performances and  sketches.

Art can be such a powerful therapeutic and communication tool, but it can also be triggering, so I believe that we need to consider how we choose to express and how we present our work to  the world.
