the way the most recent pokemon games don't let you turn off the exp share or the affection mechanic bonuses is nothing short of maddening. i think they make great accessibility features If Only They Were Optional and the flavour text is cute, but i want to have a fun casual playthrough that's at least mildly challenging without having to make it a nuzlocke or something. i don't want to feed my starter bitter medicines to make her hate me :(

My Shining Pearl Artlocke Nuzlocke challenge

I did this when the games came out. I was trying to make the game hard because I already knew it was going to be too easy.

Here are my rules:

-Catch only the first Pokémon in each area; -Name them; (naming theme - villagers from animal crossing) -draw them; -fainting = death; -draw how they died; -no items in battle; -no legendaries; -level cap = to next leader’s ace; -game mode = set; -no in-game trades; -dupes clause, for the sake of variety.

First Death: Chip I was grinding near Oreburgh Gate. Chip as already in the red and I wanted to go back to heal. ran into a starly and it didn't let me run. I was looking forward to using Chip more. His abiliti was good NGL. RIP

Piper evolved into DELELELEWOOOOOOOOP. Her ability is now Swarm.

going into the first Gym, this is my team. I have a flawless strategy, don't worry. (spam the "do grass damage" button)

I ended up just using Piper. She’s holding a metronome so I just spammed rock smash for an easy win.

Apollo Evolved and gained the ability intimidate.

Route 205: Pachirisu Name: Tasha Nature: Lax Ability: Pickup

This is my team for the grass Gym. I didn't catch anything on route 211 because Celeste decided to kill a meditite encounter, so, no new mon and no fire type...

Celeste and Piper had a little trouble with Roserade but we did it with my BIG BRAIN tactics! who needs fire types? then Celeste evolved... and a level later she evolved again! Now that I have a Crobat I can safely say this run is in the bag!

Hopkins evolved and now I have a killing machine with intimidate!

btw, I didn't catch anything on route 211 and 206 because Celeste likes crits.

Wayward cave: Bronzor (Gible spawns here btw...) Name: Clay Nature: Naughty Ability: Levitate

Renée evolved and I'm very surprised, I never used geodude before, she's quite good.

then, I remembered the old Chateau and went back to get me a mon.

I went into the 3rd gym with this team but a bit weaker. Beat it with Apollo, Hopkins and Celeste but it wasn’t easy.

Been suffering through playing a SoulSilver Nuzlocke recently. My Togepi ended up having a Modest nature and Serene Grace, so I taught them Flamethrower as a treat.

Needless to say, my little egg has been destroying everything in sight.

ADDED RULES!!!!

- Allowed three Grand Underground pokemon of choice

-Only Pokeballs

-Only Healing item allowed in bag are regular Potions

-when in a Gym, you can only use as many pokemon as the Gym Leader has on their team!

-in a gym battle, you cannot use two or more pokemon with the same Primary Typing! (ex. in Roark gym, you cannot use Piplup and Psyduck!)

-Allowed to hunt at least 1 shiny, inspite of first encounter rules and team limitations

-Allowed EITHER Mew or Jirachi Gift, not both, By Coin Flip. But it can only be used After the Fifth Gym!

Talking About My Pokemon Teams: Shining Pearl

Hi, I’m Rosa.  I play a lot of pokemon, I do a lot of nuzlockes, and I have a lot of teams from my years of all that.

There’s a team from 2021 that, despite everything having to do with thise game, is very important to me-and that’s my Blind Nuzlocke of Shining Pearl!  Let’s talk about it!

I say “Blind”, but i had played DP before and I did know the levels of the gym leader + champion beforehand.  In terms of my rules, I played on set mode and didn’t use healing items in battle, and I tried (keyword: tried) to keep my pokemon’s levels. on par with my opponents.  Anyway...the team!

-Eminence the Empoleon -Flaire the Mismagius -Rosemary the Clefable -Willow the Roserade -Crown the Rapidash -Bullseye the Ursaring

Honestly, in terms of a blind team?  I really loved this one. 

As far as Sinnoh teams go, I did my best to reject the typical “Sinnoh Starter Pack” team, and sought out Pokemon that were at least a little stranger-though I did have to go with Roserade in the absence of other, weirder grass types I thought would be available.  Empoleon was my starter of choice as it was easily the one I had used the least in my years of replaying Platinum (and Diamond...once).  Rapidash filled the rare file slot, and I lucked into getting my favorite pokemon-Clefable-with an incredible Modest nature to boot!  I chose Shining Pearl due to Misdreavus being an exclusive, and was able to get one at the earliest possible chance in Eterna Forest,  Choosing SP as my version also let me get a new addition to the story in the Grand Underground’s Teddiursa!

...Ursaring, in particular, was the start of something special.  Her pickup ability let me snag early Dusk and Shiny stones for my team, which was potentially what saved us from an early-game Gyarados.  Once evolved, that turned to annoyance at the affection mechanics of BDSP-I kept trying to take advantage of Guts, but she kept shaking off the status-but in the end that only endeared Bullseye to me even further.  She’s not the only one I loved, though-in my mind, everyone on this team was an all star!  Stuff like Crown and Willow sweeping the first two elite four members and Rosemary just generally being the MVP of tankability stick out in my mind.  We even only had one death throughout most of the game-a little Swinub I lost to a guy with three Sudowoodo.

However...there’s a sad ending to this team.

We wiped to the Pokemon league.

I had heard going into this league that this may be the hardest pokemon endgame on record, but after the first two went down easy I was feeling good about things.  Flint changed that.  After weathering the rest of his diverse team, the weakened team had to face his Infernape with basically no counter.  Rosemary was our best chance and...she got crit twice in a row, which was the only way it could have killed her.  After losing Crown and Eminence to it, too, Willow of all pokemon came in with the earlier bane of my existence, affection, living one one hp and killing the thing.  We’d made it out with three pokemon on pure luck.

Flaire was able to calm mind sweep Lucian after that, and we almost pulled off the same thing on Cynthia...but her last pokemon, Garchomp, outsped and killed Flaire.  My only chance was a guts-boosted Giga Impact from Bullseye-but in my stress, I had forgotten to teach the tm.  Slash only did a meager half hp to Garchomp, and Cynthia finished our run for us.

Despite the wipe, despite everything, despite BDSP being...well, BDSP... adored this team.  it felt so unique and so “me” for being from game with such a meager selection, and even without sticking the landing I can’t help but give this team a 10/10.

Pokemon Pearl Round up!

June 14th

OK! Sooooooo, Tears of the kingdom was an absolutely incredible game! Took me an entire month to complete it what with work and other commitments but now I can slowly work my way back to pokemon.

Pearl was a delight and I honestly absolutely love the final team. Weavile was a bit useless but all of the others were so fun to use. I feel like this is my strongest team yet but Garchomp sways the scale quite a bit there.

I was terrified when Lucian knocked out nearly half my team. I genuinely thought the run was over. Without swords dance garchomp it probably was. But overall lots of fun.

Now theoretically I could go back to Heart gold and beat red and I coould do platinum as well but really after two sinnoh games I may not be in the mood. As I do not have Brilliant diamond and shining pearl I may just supplement that gap with platinum in the future making it one of the last games I play (which will be nice as it is one of my favourites. Which would mean we have finally made it to Gen 5!

Black and white may be ok but I am absolutely terrified for Black 2 and white two. Tbh in both there are some really dangerous fights particularly as Sturdy is introduced as an ability. Things will become more exciting for sure so I am looking forward to it.

on the last episode I was fighting the rival before the pokemon league and Puddles was in trouble against Infernape! Switched to Apollo, he was faster, Brave bird ended the fight... but at a cost. RIP Apollo.

and this is my team going into the league. I had to leave Hopkins out, I couldn't NOT use Puddles!

Pfff.. the elite 4 were easy my dudes!!! This is fiiiiiine! I’m not sweating! You’re sweating!!! looking back, I have no idea how we survived! Flint almost took everyone out with his 2 fire types and a bunch of random crap!!! because there are no more than 2!!!!

It's time to challenge Cynthia.

there was a lot of switching around in the beginning and I ended up using Celeste against Milotic. RIP Celeste.

After Mira disposed of Milotic, Spititomb came back for her soul. RIP Mira.

I sent out Victoria and she switched to her Lucario.

Victoria was no match and I sent out Bones. RIP Victoria.

her lucario was stronger than Bones. RIP Bones. I sent out Flora to do some clean up.

Flora was ding great.

Cynthia wanted her gastrodon to die immediately! But then! Garchomp came out. I wanted to try using Ice beam so I switched to Puddles.

Puddles couldn't even touch Garchomp, and Flora was already hurt. GG

I lost. I should have brought Hopkins instead.

Never touched this game again. Lets be frank, it's a bad remake. Gen 4 deserved better.
