Song of the Day #17:
'Tokyo Á Go Go' by the Magnetic Fields (released 1992).
youtube
Tokyo Á go-go
Tokyo Á go-go
The dancing spies
With evil eyes
That walk the night
Tokyo Á go-go
Tokyo Á go-go
In colored scenes
The dancing queens
With laser beams
Track 5 on 'The Wayward Bus/Distant Plastic Trees' (and isn't that just a fantastic album name?).
Fun fact: One of Stephin Merritt's most prolific albums, '69 Love Songs' (a fantastic album, highly recommend for a road trip or housecleaning day) is where the song 'The Book of Love' (covered by many including my favourite version, by Peter Gabriel) came from. Merritt's favourite version is: 'is a seven-year-old girl singing it on Holland’s Got Talent. The instrumental accompaniment was cheesy, of course, but she really inhabited it in a way that you couldn’t imagine a seven-year-old girl doing. Particularly the line ‘We’re all too young to know’'. (Which he thought was particularly funny coming from a seven year old.)*
Personal blurb: *Sigh.* Okay okay. I know I said I was going to try not to do multiple songs from the same artist but I've been driving from one side of the country to the other quite a bit lately and this whole album has been keeping me such company. I can't get over how fun this song is. I mean, it is a crappy romantic spy film (you know the ones) in song form, and the beat is just so goofy and fun. It feels like it could be the theme music for Mr. and Mrs. Smith or the Pink Panther if they just fully embraced their cartoonish side (well, I guess the Pink Panther has already done that, quite literally). I just love how fun and ridiculous it is.
This whole album is so much fun. My top songs from it are:
(As you might know already) '100,000 Fireflies' for it's melancholy and strangely transporting message.
'Railroad Boy' which I LOVE. You know how you listen to an album multiple times and sometimes certain songs only reach you after you've listened to them on the 7th round? It's like reading a book or watching a movie and noticing something you've never appreciated before. It's why I can never listen to an album only once; I discover something new every time. This song in particular reminds me of this song from the movie 'Australia'. The movie was not bad, and I love the message of this song:
'By the Boab Tree' by Ophelia of the Spirits (which is an amazing name):
youtube
Both songs feel so magical to me.
youtube
I also really love 'When You Were My Baby', 'Candy', 'The Saddest Story Ever Told', 'Candy', 'Tar-Heel Boy', 'Living in an Abandoned Firehouse With You', and 'Josephine' is super fun because it's told from Napoleon's perspective (their love story was quite a cursed and interesting one; in the movie he says to her- though I doubt he said this to her in real life- when they have to face the public after a series of events: ‘All our harsh words are behind us. I need you to be my most tender friend’. I love that line).
My bonus is 'Jeremy' (and let's face it, I'd probably just list every song on the album if you gave me enough time). This one always amuses me because of Pearl Jam's 'Jeremy' and I always think this in my head whenever I hear it:
It's a great song. Trigger warning for school shooting references:
I remember the video for this being intense and good, although it's been years since I've watched it.
Anyway, enough ranting about the Magnetic Fields. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. Ralph Rant, if you will (that's my actual name).
The answer to yesterday's puzzle, after these fabulous guesses from my sister:
'So he didn’t cut of his wrong hand?
So he could get hooked easier?
So he could fish better? or zip line without anything?'
😆 The answer issssss:
*Drumroll.*
'Because after he cut off his left, he was hooked!'
*Ahem.*
Anyway.
What creature in the animal kingdom regards you as very attractive, Smalls?
😋

Do you associate your magical girls with any songs/musicians or specific musical movements from the eras they were based off of? Other than Etsuko being grunge ofc (but if you have songs do share)
I hope you don't mind that I'm answering this as a textpost and not a drawing!! It seems more directed to me as a creator + i want to include links and you can't do that on an image. lol
I'll go in chronological order in terms of inspiration! This got REALLY long because I am insane so please excuse the paragraphs.
Disclaimer that I am American and thus my perception of music trends is pretty warped through the lens of what was popular in the US around these times.
Aimi - It's hard to mention the 50s music sphere without mentioning Elvis Presley. That's just a given. The 50s was the major rise of rock and roll, and there's a bit of that inspiration in Aimi's character. But her biggest association for me is no question Doris Day. Specifically songs like "I didn't slip -- I wasn't pushed -- I fell" and her version of "A Bushel and a Peck" (you know, the song from Guys and Dolls!). "Candy Lips" too. Very much the tail end of big band music that pervaded the 40s. I won't include more links because it would just be her entire discography. All those saccharine flowery metaphors about love??? Totally up her alley. I like to imagine that her magical girl transformations are similarly accompanied by those jaunty string plucks.
Hikari - The 60s! The British Invasion! Hoo boy. Initial honorary mention here goes to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman". Outside of that, though, she's definitely a Peter, Paul, and Mary typea girl. "If I Had a Hammer", "Weave Me the Sunshine", so on. A bit more folksy than one might expect, and completely ignoring the elephant in the room, but I think it fits her well! Throw in a couple early Beatles hits if you really must - "Love Me Do" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" come to mind. Anything simple but upbeat, with a focus on guitar in the instrumentals. "Lemres," you say, "that's every single fucking pop song from the early 60s". Yes. Yes it is.
Akane - Time to get your groove on. The 70s kind of exploded in variety for popular music, and Akane leans heavily towards the disco side, but it's not exclusive. Immediate picks are anything by Earth, Wind and Fire - "Shining Star" and, of course, "September". I am legally obligated to bring up the Jackson 5. "Blame It on the Boogie" is a good pick. Don't tell me you can't imagine a planning montage to these bass lines. Lots of pop and rock acts emerged around this time, but most of them don't seem her style. She'd love David Bowie though. We all love David Bowie. Specifically Diamond Dogs. Shoutout to "Rebel Rebel".
Izumi - Listen man, I had to save writing this blurb for last. The 80s spans so much music. Izumi is a clusterfuck. I guess that makes this appropriate? AC/DC is definitely up there in terms of artist inspiration, with some Journey and REO Speedwagon on there too. I think they deserve a little bit of power ballad, as a treat. Also glam metal/rock, like Poison. You know what? I'm just gonna throw a bunch of songs out there and make you figure it out. "Back in Black", "Walk this Way", "Nothin' But a Good Time", "Once Bitten Twice Shy", and so on. They're having fun and that's what matters.
Etsuko - As mentioned, Etsuko is chiefly inspired by grunge bands! The good old Seattle Sound. Nirvana are obviously the poster child band for that - Pearl Jam and Soundgarden coming in a very close second and third. The latter two of those bands hate(d) being called grunge, by the way. Song examples are "Lithium", "Even Flow", and "Outshined". It's like if you took punk rock and played it through speakers submerged in molasses. Good shit. Mudhoney is also a GREAT example, especially songs like "Good Enough". This is the perfect genre for Etsuko because most of it is composed of complaining vaguely about Society™ and relationships, which is all she does in life.
This has been a glimpse into my sick and twisted mind. If you'll excuse me I have about 40 tabs of YouTube to go and close now.

SCRUNCHIES
pairing: stone gossard x f!reader warning(s): none, just fluff word count: 990 authors note: a lil something i threw together after i got drunk and watched a bunch of temple of a dog videos the other night. im an absolute sucker for 1990, temple of a dog stone + his hair and big sweatshirts. also i know they didn’t sing call me a dog at this show at the moore but it’s my fave so i wanted it in here somewhere
Seattle, WA - 1990
Backstage of the Moore Theatre ran rampant with excitement and nerves. You sat on a dingy dressing room sofa watching as the band flittered in and out of the room. Journalists and photographers popped in and out, some ran to get drinks and go see the opening band, Panic, as they kicked off the show, and the others lingered around backstage to grab a smoke and hang out to loosen up before their own stage cue.
You took a swig of your beer and watched as Stone searched through his bag on the vanity table. He dug through the side pockets and then inside, then tapped his pockets, a little defeated. He asked you, "have you seen my hair tie? The white one?"
Your first glance was to the coffee table in front of you - the hair tie was nowhere to be seen among the overflowing ashtrays and empty beer bottles. Your gaze dropped to your own wrist, the little white band nowhere in sight. "No, not since we got here. Did you grab it off the table by the bed?"
"Fuck, no, that's where I left it," he cursed with a grin as he turned to you with a smile, he felt stupid for forgetting it, "do you have a spare?"
Just under the cuff of your flannel was a bright pink scrunchie. Susan had given it to you last month from her own wrist when you got sick at the Off Ramp after too many vodka cranberries. It had come to use in emergency situations since, and now, it had another use.
You sat your beer bottle down on the table and unfolded your legs to pat the sofa. "Yeah, yeah, come 'ere,"
Stone started to bunch his hair together behind his neck as he walked over. He lowered down onto the floor between your legs and you reached out to pull his hair behind his shoulders. His brown wavy locks spread across his back and you ran your fingers through the stands to pull back into a ponytail, the pink scrunchie wrapped tightly around the hair so it wouldn't slip out mid-show.
Helping Stone with his hair was nothing new to you. He wasn’t bashful, he asked you to play with it, and if he didn’t want to verbally ask, he would throw his head in your lap and hope you got the hint. You always played with in when you could, you even made him do at-home hair masks with you every month or so, and you usually washed it for him in the shower in the early mornings he joined you when he wasn’t exactly fully awake.
"There you go," you said with a twirl of the ponytail around your finger. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
"Thank you baby," he grinned and turned his head to give you a quick kiss, rubbing at your arms before standing to grab his guitar from across the room.
The rest of the band trickled in with time to gather and double-check the setlist. You had fought hard with them to get Call Me A Dog on the brief setlist and Chris eventually cracked and jotted it down at your pleasure. Half an hour passed and with Panic off stage, just a mere hour before Alice in Chains were set to headline, Temple of the Dog took the stage as the second and final opener.
You stood at the side of the stage with roadies and girlfriends, and Eddie who was behind with a microphone stand, all to watch the band, to watch the crowd. They had only played one show as Temple of the Dog before that night, just three weeks ago, and the show went so well they immediately agreed when the record label came forward to ask if they wanted to take part in the three-band line-up at the Moore before Christmas. It was an early present for everyone, even them. And you, as well. Even though you witnessed rehearsals and soundcheck, you were still by the stage at every show, and it felt like a treat every single time. Live music was the center of your life before you met Stone, and that didn't change when you two started dating, even though you were quickly forced into the world of live music and a different perspective of it. Going to live shows made you feel alive, made you feel happy. So you and your friends danced at the side of the stage that night and belted the lyrics to every song on the short setlist like it was the first show you had ever been to.
Towards the end of their set, just before the last song, you watched as Stone reached up and pulled off his baseball cap, and then he pulled out the scrunchie. He looked down at the scrunchie in his hand and then over to you, and held it out in your direction with a wide grin as he walked over. You didn't think twice, you stepped out of the darkness of the stage wing and onto the stage, meeting halfway, in a sliver of light.
You took the scrunchie from his hand and then pressed a brief kiss to his lips as he leaned over. A whistle echoed up to the stage and you both laughed into the kiss, but when you pulled back, Stone grabbed at your chin and pulled you back in for another, one that you gladly sank into. Public affection wasn't necessarily something that came out often outside of close friends and the band, but there were times when it slipped out, and you were both very unapologetic about it.
Under the microphone feedback and whistles, you pulled back and said, "now, play me my favorite song," as your eyes listened in the lowlighting.
Stone chuckled, nose nestled against yours, "will do,"

hiii, can i request a blurb for a timothée x reader where music is kinda of something like special to their relationship so they’re just talking about music and how similar their music taste is and how beautiful music can be? lmao im a literal musician so i’ve been daydreaming abt that for a while
blurbs & drabbles night
First dates are always the most stressful.
This seemed especially true when they were with big time actors who you’d only met by chance in a coffee shop off a corner in Manhattan. You hadn’t recognized him through his hood and baseball cap, but as soon as he’d complimented your Nirvana t-shirt and offered to buy your coffee, how could you not?
The conversation lasted quite a while, and he was modest as well. He’d introduced himself as any other guy would, said his name was Timmy and that he really enjoyed Nirvana as well and liked your style. If you hadn’t been internally screaming before, his asking for your phone number only added to the carefully contained meltdown you were having on the inside.
You then went on to spend two hours that night rightfully stalking all of his socials. He texted a bit later while you were making pasta and jumping around the kitchen to Pearl Jam. It was a couple lines about how he wanted to wait a few more hours so he didn’t look desperate, but that he had some free time later the following week and wanted to ask if you’d like to go out with him.
With wide eyes, you willed yourself to wait at least five minutes before responding so you didn’t come off like you were waiting for his text. Once you responded with a quick ‘of course,’ he asked where you lived. Turns out, your dorm wasn’t too far from where he was taking you, which he’d explained was a small record store he’d been going to since he was in high school.
Now, you were both walking down the bustling sidewalk, hands brushing every few seconds. He explained how difficult it was for him to get out without being photographed, and that he was sorry if paps started following you guys. However, you both made it to the small, hole-in-the-wall little shop with ease.
The little bell jingled as soon as you stepped in, and an orange cat came out from behind the counter. It was one of those old looking cats with smooshed faced, it reminded you of the one from Harry Potter. The store owner seemed to smirk at Timothée, eyes darting from you to him.
“Bring all your dates here?” You teased, letting him pull you up the small, cluttered staircase.
“I’m hurt,” he joked, hand over his heart. “Actually, I’ve never brought anyone in here before.”
This may have inflated your ego a bit too much, face heating at his words. He brought you to a small little area, there was a couch that looked like it came straight out of the 1970’s and shelves lined with records. He thumbed a few of the vinyls, seemingly trying to choose the perfect one.
“You seem like a Billy Joel fan,” he observed.
“Who the hell isn’t?” You laughed, “when I was seven, my mom put me in piano lessons and all I would play was Billy Joel.”
“I play piano—I mean, I’m not amazing, but I can play. I did a movie a few years ago, I had to learn how to play for it,” he spoke.
He hadn’t talked much of his fame, or the fact that he was a big shot movie star with millions of people fawning over him. It seemed like he was trying to be humble, but you were curious about his career. Maybe he saves that for third dates, you thought to yourself sarcastically.
You leaned over him, looking through the section he was gazing at. He flustered easily, a visible redness spreading through his cheeks. You grinned a bit, watching him pull the record out of the sleeve and place it down. He moved the needle onto the vinyl with ease, sinking down to the floor and pulling his knees to his chest.
Vienna played lowly, a classic that you loved all too much. He noticed this, taking the opportunity to look at you a bit closer. The sweet silence made you wonder if he really hadn’t ever brought another person here.
“Music has always been a passion of mine, it’s like—I don’t know, it’s like everything in music just seems to come together and make sense. I just feel weirdly connected to it,” you rambled. “I probably make no sense, but hopefully you get a little bit of what I mean.”
“No—no, I completely agree. There’s just something about good music, I think I really got to broadening my taste later in high school. I totally see what you’re saying, it just sort of means something more than words can sometimes.”

Helping Tonio Unwind Hcs!
(a/n): Hello Everyone! Thanks for reading! There’s a little blog update under the cut! ;)
Tonio spends all day serving customers and working in the kitchen, so he tends to come home quite exhausted. He’s happy with what he does, but running a restaurant alone is definitely tiring. That’s why he’s always elated to see your face when he comes through the door.
While Tonio is an expert cook, you started to learn how to make traditional Italian meals when you started dating. You’d notice how tired he was when he’d cook for the two of you at the end of the day, and insisted on doing it yourself.
While your cooking isn’t as good as something with Pearl Jam, Tonio can’t get enough of it! You’ve worked so hard to learn the recipes of his homeland, and he can practically taste the love baked into the meal. It’s not the best, but you’re certainly getting better, and he couldn’t be prouder of you.
After you two eat and do the dishes together, Tonio likes to curl up with the couch and watch something together. Depending on when he gets home, it can be a TV show or a movie, and he loves watching a good sitcom to unwind after a long day. He also likes to watch cheesy competitive cooking shows- he knows they’re fake and hokey, but he likes the thrill of competition.
After that, you two do your nightly routines one by one and crawl into bed. You help him relax- he’s always so tense when he gets home, especially on busy days where the restaurant is packed. You make a mental note to stop by his restaurant one day, maybe you can help him in the kitchen or wait tables to help take some pressure off.
You place a chaste little kiss to the nape of his neck, lightly massaging his shoulders as he relaxes into your touch. When he calms down a bit more, he’ll flip over to face you, holding you close as you both fall asleep. You always make a point to make sure he gets enough sleep and to make him coffee in the morning- you know your poor workaholic needs it!
You show your love for Tonio by showing him that he doesn’t have to be serving others 100% of the time. Once he comes through the front door, you’re ready to wait on him hand and foot! Not that he doesn’t return the favor, but it means a lot that you make such a big effort to help him unwind. You remind him why he works so hard- so he can come home to earn your affections!

Homecookings [Jan. ed]
How was everyone’s first month of the new year?? Mine was pretty busy. .. bcos I picked up a new hobby & that is reading Webtoons haha
* blurb about Webtoons: (skip past this paragraph if you don’t wanna read!)
Reading Webtoons is not a time-consuming hobby. It can be! But. .. I’m pretty good =P lol I downloaded the Naver Webtoon app bcos it’s all in English (the Korean version has way more options!); however, the one I have has a lot of choices as well. Many are free but once you reach a certain episode, it becomes a daily unlock situation or you gotta pay coins (that you buy with credit card). I’m not doing the latter, nor do I wanna fall into this hole lol so what I’ve been doing is really picking the ones that I really enjoy reading. I’ve started a bunch, where I’d read the first few episodes, but then I wasn’t actually that into it so I ditched it & found other ones. So when I said I was “busy” with this new hobby, it’s more like I’m sampling different Webtoons haha I’m currently only following 3! They are: True Beauty, Annarasumanara, & Lost in Translation!
Anyway, back to homecooking. I didn’t cook much ‘individual’ meals so there’s not much to this post, but I did more individual post-worthy cookings haha
Braised tofu (Korean style) with the typical sauces I use: soy sauce, rice syrup & some gochu chili powder. Oh, & can’t forget the garlic.
Korean pollack soup. I haven’t made this in a while, & it was a cold day so I wanted this cozy, simple soup. It has dried pollock (I need to restock! I have enough for at most 3 more portions of this soup.), napa cabbage, garlic, daikon radish, & tofu. Seasoned with salted shrimp sauce & freshly ground white pepper.
On a day off during a cold winter day......... hahaha this was my breakfast! :D
Made more cherry jam bcos I ran out. I can’t believe my mom found MORE frozen home-grown cherries from our freezer.. . there is STILL more! Anyway, my most hated part is cherry pitting -.-” we have a cherry pitter gadget but it doesn’t work. It’s not bcos they’re frozen but even when they’re fresh, it doesn’t work for these cherries. It’s too soft & too much water content so cherry juice ends up spraying everywhere. So it was all hand-pitted, manually. By me. >.< my nails turned so gross afterwards; looked like I had blood everywhere.
Spaghetti with cherry tomatoes & cremini mushrooms. Just tossed in olive oil from Evoolution & some random herbs.
I cooked this & didn’t bother taking a photo bcos. .. it wasn’t worth it. It was really blah....... you can take a look at my older post on another rice ramen here: https://missguomeiyun.tumblr.com/post/640040837663866880/jade-pearl-rice-ramen
The only difference between this one & the jade pearl one is the colour of the noodles. This one was like.. . light brown/tan, while the jade pearl one was green.
Dumpling + fish cake + rice cake soup. COMFORT FOOD FTW!
Continue to stay safe, everyone :)

Sawyer - Samantha Whiskey
Summary (from Samantha Whiskey’s Goodreads page)
Balancing an NHL schedule and my mother’s care fills every minute of my day,
But one glance at Scythe’s bartender, and I’m looking for ways to make time.
Echo Hayes is my exact opposite: she’s wild—I’m reserved. She’s fearless—I’m careful.
She’s a 1 a.m. last call, and I’m a 7 a.m. practice.
On paper, we shouldn’t work.
But in reality, our chemistry burns hotter than these Charleston nights.
We’ve agreed to no-strings,
But every taste leaves me wanting more.
And more is where she draws the line.
The past haunts her, and my obligations own my present.
But it doesn’t stop me from wanting a future with her.
Our worlds are drastically different—
And when they collide?
The fallout jeopardizes my contract, and puts our hearts on the line.
Now I’m the one begging her to risk it all—
Or we’ll lose everything worth fighting for.
Blurb
“I opened the door to the bar and was greeted by Def Leppard blaring from the jukebox. A bachelorette party sang along at the top of their lungs, and the bride was up on the corner table, both hands in the air while a waitress shook her head.
Bypassing a few empty tables and a few crowded ones, I grabbed a seat at the empty side of the bar.
“Sorry, but last call was a few minutes ago,” a waitress told me with a wince as she approached another crowded table.
“That’s okay. I’ll take this one.”
The sound of her voice had me turning back toward the bar, and a corner of my mouth lifted into something that was almost a smirk as she came into view, walking toward me from the swinging door that led to the kitchen.
Echo Hayes stopped in front of me, and then stared me down with an arched eyebrow. “Aren’t you a little far from home?” she questioned with a slow southern drawl, staring pointedly at my Pearl Jam shirt.
I took in her black Ramones T-shirt that had been cut so it draped off one shoulder, and let my eyes trail down her cut-off shorts that barely covered her ass, fishnet stockings, and black moto boots. Fuck, this woman had curves for miles, and desperately needed a giant warning sign that read danger all over her. By the time I reached her pixie-shaped face, diamond stud nose ring, turquoise eyes, and purple hair that fell in various shades down her back, I was smiling, and she was glaring.
She was incredibly beautiful and so fucking sexy that I was going to have to shift my jeans if I stared too long.
“You have no idea,” I replied to her snarky question. There was zero chance in the world she remembered me. Maybe if I’d been with Harper and Faith—
“Bourbon?” she asked.
My jaw slacked momentarily in surprise. “You remember?”
“You’re not exactly easy to forget, even if you’re not with the Queens of Reaper Village.” Her eyes took their turn with me, and I felt her gaze on my skin as if it was her hand, stroking over the muscles of my biceps, caressing the pecs that stretched the material of my T-shirt, down to the waist she couldn’t quite see with the bar in her way, then back up, lingering on my neck until she reached my eyes. Then she blinked, her gaze softening. “You look like you need a drink.”
Without another word, she reached for the same bottle I’d had last time and poured it neat. She really did remember.
She slid the drink across the bar and then leaned on the counter so only the expanse of black granite separated us. “Start talking, West Coast.””
(review under the cut)
Review
After meeting with some of the Carolina Reapers in the first book of the series, I was glad to see them again in SAWYER. This time, they welcome a young goalie who wants to make big in the NHL but has fucked up his first call. Sawyer is a nice guy, all out to help his sick mother, but also a bad motherfucker. He’s always been the one to help, so it’s a nice change when he meets Echo, who’s going to keep him afloat when nerves go wild.
It’s an instant friendship, with lots of heat. The book starts a bit as a slow burn, but everything is quickly swept away once the characters kiss. Damn that kiss. It’s like they have sex with their mouth. After that, and because neither is ready for a relationship, they settle on being casual. You can guess that feelings won’t stay away for long.
I really enjoyed the struggle of Sawyer when he becomes a NHL player. Samantha Whiskey is good when she writes about his fears and insecurities.
She does well too with the side story that brings the angst in the relationship: Echo’s ex coming back, decided to fuck with her life to get her back. It brings some tension between all the characters.
So yeah, it’s a good hockey romance, and I can’t wait to meet again with the Reapers.
Quickie
Series: Carolina Reapers #2 (but the series is a sequel to Whiskey’s series Seattle Sharks, 9 books)
Hashtags: #hockey romance #no string attached #friends-to-lovers
Triggers: mention of drug consumption
Main couple: Echo Hayes & Sawyer McCoy
Hotness: 4/5
Romance: 4/5
+ dynamics between the members of the hockey team (and their spouses)
- Echo’s backstory felt a bit too much
Stalker mode
