Kostel sv. Jiljí, opata ve Chvalkovicích

Podle kamenné desky se lvem s 2 ohony a křížem v tlamě v presbyteriu, která nese nápis: „Anno Domini milesimo trecentesimo quarto“ a má pocházet z původního kostela, můžeme vycházet z toho, že gotický chrám ve Chvalkovicích stával již v roce 1304, přičemž výše jmenovaný klenák byl při obnově chrámu vyňat z klenby a roku 1905 zasazen k velkému oltáři po epištolní straně nad vchod do sakristie. Chvalkovický chrám měl být údajně založen již Berkou z Dubé. Konfirmační knihy jmenují roku 1359 kněze Jana, který byl prezentován z Chvalkovic na Hořičky. Jeho nástupcem byl kněz Václav, který po čase zaměnil své místo s knězem Ctiborem, který působil při svatyni ve Zvoli a v roce 1370 byl ustanoven za chvalkovického duchovního správce. Ještě téhož roku zemřel Bavor z Chvalkovic, který po sobě zanechal vdovu Střezu či Střízu, jíž odkázal na 4 roky 6 grošů úroku na vsi Krábčicích pro chvalkovický kostel. V roce 1374 zaměnil kněz Ctibor své místo se Svatoslavem ze Skalice a paní Střízou byl potvrzen 9. ledna téhož roku. Po 13 letech se vzdal dobrovolně svého úřadu a měl za nástupce kněze Pavla Zdeňka, po němž v roce 1408 po tříleté vakatuře následoval kněz Albert za souhlasu Jana Švába z Chvalkovic, jenž na vsi Krábčicích vykázal 2 kopy grošů pro místní kostel. Roku 1643 byla zdejší fara zrušena a kostel se stal filiálním do Choustníkova Hradiště. V roce 1652 k němu náleželo příjmů po 18 korcích žita a ovsa, též něco polí, ale toho času pustých. K tomuto kostelu byly přivtěleny statky: Malá Bukovina Jindřicha z Bubna a Velká Bukovina Rudolfa Hozlauera. V letech 1690-1694 byl úplně přestavěn Ferdinandem Rudolfem Dobřenským do dnešní podoby, což potvrzuje letopočet 1694 na závěrečném klenáku nad hlavním vchodem. Roku 1708 (v některých pramenech se uvádí již rok 1706) byla obnovena fara, i když jen jako administratura. Jejími prvními správci byli: P. B. Miller a následně P. Pavel František Krňovský. V roce 1738 došlo k obnově fary a prvním zdejším farářem se stal P. Matěj Hynek Hoffer, který zde působil 20 let. K různým opravám a úpravám kostela došlo v letech 1874, 1905-1906 (továrník Vilém Dlabola dal zbavit tmavého laku sošky, kazatelnu a postranní oltáře a nechal je natřít světlejším brunolínem), 1925, 1928-1936 a 1971 (rekonstrukce žlabů). V roce 1938 byla od kostela hranicí oddělena fara, protože byla přičleněna k Třetí říši. Od 28. února 1964 je objekt památkově chráněn, protože došlo k jeho zapsání do státního seznamu kulturních památek. V současnosti je kostel administrován z Hořiček.

Jedná se o jednolodní objekt raně gotické dispozice s valbovou střechou, s pravoúhlým presbytářem, s lichoběžníkovou bývalou sakristií a s pozdější kaplí Panny Marie na severní straně. Na západní straně kostela se nachází průčelní hranolovitá věž s cibulovitou kopulí. Za kostelem na východní straně je navíc umístěna dvojice kaplí obdobného vzhledu a půdorysu. Jižní, jež je sklenuta plackou, je zasvěcena sv. Janu Nepomuckému a pochází z doby kolem roku 1740 (uvnitř tumba s kartuší s reliéfem Zpovědi sv. Jana, na tumbě sokl v podobě mostu a na něm vyřezávaná scéna Mučednictví světcova, nad oltářem obraz Glorifikace sv. Jana), severní kaple s rovným stropem z téže doby slouží dnes jako skladiště. Stěny lodi jsou členěné lizénami a půlkruhovými okny s hladkými šambránami. Na jižní straně lodi je zazděn gotický kamenný hrotitý profilovaný portál ze 14. století. Triumfální oblouk je segmentový a profilovaný. Presbytář, loď a kaple jsou zaklenuty valenou klenbou se stýkajícími se výsečemi, stěny lodi jsou členěny svazky pilastrů. Lukovitě prohnutá kruchta na železných sloupech pochází z roku 1904. Na straně epištol je zazděný 83 cm vysoký kámen podoby opatské mitry, bývalý klenbový svorník, který původně uzavíral klenutí nade dveřmi na jižní straně chrámu. Roku 1865 byl zasazen do zdi uvnitř kostela. Je ozdoben reliéfem dvouocasého lva, držícího v tlamě kříž a pod ním dubovou ratolest, tj. jde o znak pánů z Dubé. Kolem krásné osmicípé pravidelné růžice je vytesán gotickým písmem nápis: „ANNO DOMINI MILESIO TRICENTESIMO QUARTO“ (L.P. 1304). Zajímavými objekty jsou též náhrobníky pánů Dobřenských z Dobřenic, kterých tu bývalo více než 25 a pocházely z let 1528-1665.

Rokokový hlavní oltář je rámový s figurami andělů, původně s obrazem sv. Jiljí, který byl opraven roku 1862. Ostatní řezbářský inventář je z nepolychromovaného mořeného dřeva a pochází z doby kolem roku 1700. Dva portálové protějškové boční oltáře jsou vyřezané z dubu a vznikly koncem 17. století. Oltář sv. Anny je dřevěná sloupová architektura s obrazem sv. Anny od Josefa Václava Hellicha z roku 1875 a s nástavcem z akantových rozvilin se sochou sv. Kláry. Stejně vyveden je rovněž oltář sv. Salvátora s obrazem Spasitele od téhož autora z roku 1875, na němž byly navíc umístěny sochy sv. Františka z Assisi, sv. Františka Xaverského a sv. Antonína. Z téhož materiálu jsou též kazatelna ze 17. století se soškami sv. evangelistů (Matouše, Marka, Lukáše a Jana) a ornamentálně vyřezávané dveře do bývalé sakristie. Ploché lavice byly vyvedeny v barokním slohu. Varhany jsou z roku 1774 od Vojtěcha Schrayera (některé prameny však uvádějí, že jsou již z roku 1760). Cínová křtitelnice se soškou sv. Jiljí na víku z roku 1691 je darem Ferdinanda Rudolfa Dobřenského z Dobřenic, což dokazuje nápis: "FERDINAND RVDOLFF DOBŽENSKIJ, Z DOBRZENICZ, TVTO KRZTITEDLNICIJ TOMV CHRAMV PANIE DAROWAL, LETA BOŽIHO, 1691, 25. DNE MĚSIJCZE SRPNA."

Dvoupatrová kostelní věž s pilastry na nárožích vznikla při barokní přestavbě chrámu v letech 1690-1694, což dokazuje letopočet nad vchodem s iniciálami „FRD-MMD“ (Ferdinand Rudolf Dobřenský-Marie Magdalena Boryňka ze Lhoty). Na věži byly dříve umístěny 3 zvony, z nichž se zachovaly 2. První z roku 1513 o průměru 84 cm, výšce 62 cm, s erbem pánů z Hustířan a nápisem: „tento zvon gest danei od pana waclawa zdenka ze svinisstian a na chwalkowiczich leta panie MDxiii za pana indrzicha z hustirzan a na chwalkowiczich iest udielan od iana passi“ a druhý zvon z roku 1539 o průměru 98 cm, výšce 72 cm s textem: „Leta Boziho tisiczyho pietistyho trzidczateho dewateho tento zwon ke cti a chwale bozi slit u mistra divisse hlawaczie z hradce“. Tento zvon byl v roce 1942 zrekvírován pro válečné účely, ale z Prahy byl nakonec jako cenná památka vrácen a koncem téhož roku opět zavěšen na věž. Jeho srdce se však ztratilo a je nahrazeno novým, které však nemá vzhledem ke zvonu správnou velikost. Třetí zvon byl ozdoben erbem pánů z Dobřenic, reliéfy Madony a sv. Pavla. Měl v průměru 72 cm, vysoký byl 55 cm a nesl nápis: „Od vrozeneho a stateczneho Rytirze P. Ferd. Rvd. Dobrzenskeho z Dobrzenicz P. na Chwalkowiczich a Svinisstianech g. m. KRAL: Heytmana krage Kralohradeczkeho“. Pocházel z roku 1693 (někdy uváděn rok 1692) a byl kostelu věnován o 6 let později. Tento zvon se stal obětí rekvizice v roce 1918 (podle obecního webu, jiné prameny uvádějí, že byl zrekvírován již roku 1916).

Kolem kostela se původně nacházel hřbitov, který byl zrušen roku 1899, ale po odstoupení Sudet v roce 1938 se zde muselo opět pohřbívat, protože nový hřbitov byl již součástí Třetí říše. Jako pozůstatky po původním hřbitově zůstaly za kostelem 2 kříže a před jeho vchodem socha Ježíše Krista držícího knihu s „Alfa-Omegou“ a socha truchlícího anděla s náhrobkem. So all I've seen of Czech Elisabeth is what you've posted, but - thoughts/notes on Smrt's and the angels' costumes?

I'm always here to talk about the Smrt and angel costumes because oh my god, do I love them.

Smrt and his angels are designed to look very birdlike, specifically like carrion crows/ravens, who are frequently associated as symbols/bringers of death. The choice to really lean into the bird-inspired costumes was especially smart when combined with the Czech translated lyrics, which really leaned into the bird-associated symbolism in the text.

I must confess that when I first saw the production photos, I didn't like the costumes. I think it might have been because I already had the association formed that Tod in a pleather costume is not a good choice. However, what really made me love the costumes is when I saw them onstage and saw them in movement. I don't know what kind of weird pleather the costume workshop used, but despite obviously being pleather, it had such beautiful light movement on both Smrt and the angels and flowed so beautifully every time they moved.

The angels all wear long coats with hoods, one of their sleeves is close fitting and covered in little "feathers" and the other is made to look like a wing. The wings, aside from creating gorgeous movement, were also used to create Rudolf's grave during Totenklage, which was an absolutely genius move.

Smrt is given a different costume to clearly differentiate him as the leader of the flock/not an angel himself. And I honestly think his costume is ICONIC. He wears a pretty standard undercostume of pants with knee high boots and a vest, but I like that instead of buttoning straight down the front, Smrt's vest buttons diagonally. Which is a tiny detail, but it shows that Smrt is not a human.

And then, there is that absolutely EPIC coat. The coat is pretty simple at first glance, but just the way it's patterned and cut is very interesting, since the front is cut a bit shorter so the Smrt actors don't step on it, but the back pieces are kept longer to have more movement in the garment. And the back was given triangular gores in the "skirt" of the coat for even more movement.

And of course, instead of the wing sleeves, Smrt has a feathered shoulderpiece made out of various types of feathers, most prominently rooster feathers, which throw subtle green and blue reflections under the stage lights. Once again, I have to mention the movement, because those feathers at moments seemed to live a life of their own, almost ruffling themselves up with the movement.

Also, you might have noticed I talked about the coat and vest, but not a shirt and that is because Smrt just doesn't wear one. Which is just a detail that is so subtle, but when you know about it, it is just one more of those details that just show that Smrt is not a human. And if you need proof that there indeed isn't a shirt (and this is an excuse for me to include one of my favorite silly pictures of Pavel Režný as Smrt):

And of course, the makeup deserves a mention, because once again, it's ICONIC. Both Smrt and the angels wear a bold black eyepaint, with the angels sporting a more graphic liner look alongside black lipstick and Smrt having a more simple, but varied look through the production's 4 year run.

And what I think speaks to the greatness of the costumes is that the actors themselves were fond of wearing them. Pavel Režný in particular seemed very fond of his Smrt costume and makeup, doing the pre-show soundchecks in almost full costume and with the eyepaint, donning the full Smrt costume and makeup for concerts only to have to immediately take the full thing off and after the production derniere in Brno evidently not taking the Smrt makeup off until he returned home in the middle of the night.

Pavel Režný also went through multiple hairstyle changes through his run as Smrt, since he had to grow his hair out for Jesus Christ Superstar. So, after the derniere, we got a full on Jesus!Smrt moment for an offstage event. Tbh, I wish we had gotten this more flowy hairstyle on Smrt onstage while the show ran, because it is a look tbh:
