“oh no dad i don’t think we should talk about-” you were cut off by the door opening. you let out a breath. ‘saved by the bell’ you thought to yourself.
george stepped out on the deck, greeting you with a warm smile before making his way over to where you stood. his hand snakes around you to rest on the railing.
“everyone, this is george,” you introduced, motioning for him to step forward. “george this is my mum, dad, grandfather, and then cressida or the bride-to-be.”
george shook each of their hands respectfully. you were already quirking your eyebrow at his sudden manners. usually by now someone had some prank played on them, especially when george met new people.
“so this is the boy you brought home. i’m so glad to meet my daughters boyfriend,” your mom beamed. “we don’t know a lot about her life at school but i’m glad to finally be meeting you. how long have you two been together?”
you paled. not once did you think your family would assume the two of you were together. you didn’t even prep or have time to make up a story.
george smirked at your near panicked expression. “since the beginning of this year. so that’s what, seven months? but we’ve been friends since first year,” he answered cooley.
you faked a yawn, wanting to get out of the conversation before your mum could come up with questions george couldn’t answer off the top of his head.
“oh dear, you two must be exhausted from your trip. you two are upstairs in your old bedroom. everything’s already ready with your bedsheets and setup. feel free to take a nap before dinner tonight.”
“thank you mrs. y/l/n,” george thanked before turning to you. “ready to go love?”
you nodded, “yeah let’s go.”
the two of you headed back inside. george stopped back in the living room to pick up your bags before meeting you again. he followed you up the stairs and down the hall towards you room which, thankfully, was away from the other rooms on the floor giving you at least a little bit of privacy.
“i hope you don’t mind sharing a bed,” you spoke as you twisted the doorknob.
“you’re joking,” george groaned when he saw the room. “how are we supposed to fit?”
“george come on, it’s fine. this bed is barely bigger than a twin, i’m sure we can squeeze. it’s not the first time we’ve shared anyway.”
“not the first time?”
you took your bag out of george’s hands and placed it in the corner. normally you wouldn’t unpack for such a short weekend but you abe clothes that needed to be hung up to prevent wrinkles.
“don’t you remember the burrow last break?” you questioned. “you and fred almost blew up your room and then molly kicked you out so your room could air out. take a guess where you ended up.”
george grinned at the memory. “ah yeah i remember that. we did make some really good whiz-bangs though. and hey, we only shared because you were sleeping in percy’s old room and he has a bigger bed. when was the second time?”
“after hogsmeade,” you answered. “you thought it would be so funny to push me into the snow only to realize way too late that it was a half-frozen puddle and i got soaked.”
“and then you sat in between fred and i by the fire to warm up,” george finished the story. “yeah that was funny.”
you rolled your eyes. “maybe you should unpack instead of dwelling on my suffering.”
“alright sounds good, girlfriend,” george made sure to add extra emphasis on the final word.
“don’t think you’re off the hook for what you did.”
“and what is that exactly?”
you let out a huff, throwing the shirt you were folding down. it was beyond annoying that george was completely going around the situation.

“why is this such a problem to you? babes, you invited me to be your date.”

george broke out in a short fit of laughter. you frowned, visibly upset at your friends approach to the situation.
“it’s the middle of april. i doubt there’s going to be any mistletoe. besides, we only have to play the part for less then three days. we won’t do anything that makes each other uncomfortable, okay?”
you nodded. you had to admit, george’s words did bring you some comfort. “alright fine, but don’t expect anything from me.”
“well what about cuddling? i mean we are sharing a bed after all.”
you threw a shirt at him. “we’ll talk later weasley. i still need to explain how a muggle wedding works.”
you and george unpacked in sync while you went over everything he would need to know for the weekend.
he seemed to get everything with minimal questions. george seemed especially excited about the wedding reception.
“wait so i need a suit?”
“yeah but i already have you covered. my dad has something that’s your size,” you explained. “what about your dress?” george asked.
“oh don’t worry about that, it’s a surprise,” you beamed. “cress and i aren’t close enough for me to be in her bridal party so i can pretty much wear what i want.”
george nodded. “sounds good. what’s the plan for today and tomorrow again?”
“we have dinner at eight with my entire family tonight. my sisters fiancé jasper will be there too. he’s a lot nicer than her and actually understands, to an extent, me being a witch,” you spoke. “and then we have to be at the wedding venue by four tomorrow and the reception starts at nine.”
“is your grandmother going to be at dinner tonight? i haven’t seen her in awhile.”
you hummed. “oh yeah she’ll be thrilled to see you. don’t be surprised if she mixes you up with fred though.”
george shrugged, a slight frown on his face. “eh it’s fine. it happens all the time.”
a genuine yawn escaped your lips after he finished his thought. “tired?” george inquired. “i didn’t really sleep well last night, too stressed,” you revealed.
“why don’t you lay down and rest for a bit. i have something to work on in the meantime,” george offered. you raised your eyebrows. “and what is that?”
“just a new prank. i don’t want to give too much away but it’s going to be really good.”
you shrugged. “okay, just don’t blow up my room please,” you added. you shrugged off your robes, folding them up to place in your suitcase as you grabbed a pair of more casual clothes.
“i’ll be right back, i’m going to get changed.”
you returned a moment later, tossing the rest of your uniform in your suitcase. “comfy?” george asked, motioning down to your new attire. “very,” you answered as you headed over to the bed.
george leaned down to press his lips to your temple after you got under the covers. “sleep well love.”
your cheeks flushed at the platonic gesture. “thank you.”
george waited a few minutes before he looked at you again, feeling an overwhelming sense of protectiveness as you slept. you were his best friend. it wasn’t strange to feel like that...right?

6th August 2021 – Global hospitality design specialist Dexter Moren Associates (DMA) is celebrating the opening of Malmaison York, a 150-room luxury hotel that boasts York’s highest rooftop bar with breath-taking views of York Minster and the historic city beyond.
Working closely with York-based developer North Star, Project Manager Gleeds and brand and operator Malmaison on behalf of the project’s funder Lothbury, DMA’s interior design concept for the transformation of the former Yorkshire House building in Rougier Street takes inspiration directly from the 1960’s brutalist architecture of the existing structure, as well as York’s strong links with confectionary manufacturing.
Lindsey Bean-Pearce, Head of Interior Design at DMA, explains: “Our philosophy is to create original and unique designs specific to the requirements of each individual project. We draw our design inspiration from a building’s context and local neighbourhood to create spaces with longevity that are authentic and, above all, have character. Our design for Malmaison York sensitively retains and refurbishes this concrete building to celebrate the architecture and vibrancy of the sixties, unlocking the beauty of this once austere office block to create a truly memorable hotel.”
Locally known as the Aviva building, the 1960s brutalist structure truly reflects the principles of the mid-century style and features eight levels of concrete floorplates, façade and waffle ceilings that have been sensitively retained and restored where possible as an integral part of the scheme.
Yves Klein blue painted concrete waffle ceilings feature in the reception, bar & restaurant and breakout spaces, and sit alongside bold block colour mid-century graphic inspired rugs and upholsteries. These stronger elements are accented by a more pared back base palette including terrazzo and timber flooring as well as black stained oak panelling and black lavastone bar fronts.
A bespoke feature acrylic rod chandelier welcomes guests into the reception, while brass ‘flower pot’ pendants by Sixties icon Verner Panton sit adjacent to the façade of the building throughout the bar and restaurant space. DMA collaborated with Malmaison and art consultancy Elegant Clutter to develop the concept for the artwork which features extensively throughout the hotel, with inspiration taken from Sixties greats such as Warhol, Hockney, Lichtenstein and Yves Klein.
Both the reception and bar spaces connect to the signature Malmaison Work+Play in a new extension to the rear of the building. The area features bookable meeting pods, extensive breakout spaces and self-service kitchens which all receive daylight from a centrally located clerestory. The conference rooms and ballroom have been optimised to create divisible multifunctional spaces with feature marquetry veneer wallcovering and signature artworks.
Guestrooms
DMA, North Star and Malmaison spent considerable collaboration time building sample guestrooms to test the layouts and maximise the space within the existing building’s rigid concrete shell and core. Room layouts were designed to be wider rather than longer, allowing beds to be located opposite windows and take full advantage of the views of York Minster and the River Ouse.
“The idea behind the space planning of the rooms is to walk in and it be completely open,” explains David Harte, Associate and lead designer on the project. “By deconstructing the standard box-like bathroom, and utilising the wide rooms we were able to position the beds opposite the windows and create a wide vanity with glazing above for privacy yet create openness and maximise the views and daylight for the guests at every level.”
Within the guestrooms, dark stained maple millwork sits on grey marble tiling. Recycled coconut shell marmoleum-lined walls meet part-height glazing and amber-tinted glass shower enclosures. Tan leather upholstery is punctuated with black metalwork and bronze accents. Yves Klein blue, burnt orange, mustard yellow and the signature Malmaison pink – all key colours of the Sixties – are playfully positioned as accents throughout, whilst bold geometric patterns are applied in the wallcovering and fabrics to further bolster the link to the brutalist architecture and design of the 1960s. Each guestroom has a feature artwork panel which conceals the TV, designed by Elegant Clutter which references the alchemy behind the making of the famous fruit pastille of the nearby Rowntree’s factory and is complemented by smaller brutalist architecture inspired framed pieces.
Rooftop Bar
The seventh floor of the hotel boasts Sora, a wrap-around destination restaurant and bar with panoramic views of York. The bar is purposely set lower to allow for guests to have uninterrupted views of York Minster when ordering beverages.
It is reached by a dedicated express lift lined in gold metal and a smoked oak floor. On arrival guests are greeted by a large bespoke moveable glass wall; designed meticulously with North Star’s joinery division, each fluted glass panel features a swivel mechanism to obscure or reveal the view beyond and create a bespoke view and artwork each day for guests.
Conceptually, the space is separate from the hotel, focusing on the industrial heritage and extensive green spaces of York. Nature inspired upholsteries and soft furnishings contrast against crittall dividing screens. The spaces are designed with the view in mind, with the main features – the bar and striped feature ceiling to the centre of the space directing the guest’s gaze towards York Minster.

Brainstorming, research and content choice:
To help me decide what kind of magazines I wanted to create I spent a while researching various different magazines and looking into their content, there layout style and the image aesthetic that best fit the magazine. From this I managed to decide on four different genres of magazines with a varied style in terms of photography and the page layouts.
I chose to do; a surf magazine in the style of Wave length, a fashion magazine in the style of DAMAN, a story piece in the style of oh comely and then finally I for my SDA (self-directed assignment} I chose to do a piece that could be seen in Cornwall living.
Wavelength surf magazine:
I chose to do a surf magazine as surfing is a big part of my life and being able to create a magazine on something I love made the whole experience of creating it so much more enjoyable, to the point where I looked forwards to seeing the final outcome. However, this also meant that I wanted to get it perfect and I found myself remaking both of my double page spreads numerus times. Bit of a pain…
I chose to do the magazine in the style of wave length as I love the layouts in the magazine with its simplistic but effective choice in image and text placement. Multiple publications exist under the name Wavelength Magazine. 'Wavelength' is a worldwide surfing magazine published by WL media, based in Newquay, Cornwall.
After creating and remaking many different templates the first two images above are the layouts that I replicated.
By using this as my magazine template I was able to show all of the photos that I wanted to, with the ability to display my personal favorite images in a larger form than my lesser proud images. It also gave me free range in terms of how much text I wanted to write, which to me was a very big deal as I really struggle with writing even if it’s on something that I love.
My idea for the article in the magazine was to tell the story of my friend Hannes Behrendt, writing about what surfing means to him and sharing his love for the ocean. This idea came about initially last semester when I used him as my male for my portrait series, then when we were given the brief of doing a magazine I contacted him again asking if he would mind if I wrote a magazine article on him, to which he was really excited about and we went and shot straight away. He also sent me a piece that he had written for me on what surfing means to him to include in the article.
The third and fourth images are the spreads that I created.
Over all I am happy with the way the magazines turned out, after redoing them so many times and going through various different templates it is an amazing feeling to have something that I am now genuinely happy with. I feel like I have captured the asthenic of the magazine in terms of image style and also that the content is something that would appear in the magazine.
DAMAN fashion magazine:
Fashion has always been a love of mine, even though I am personally not stylish I really enjoy capturing the unique styles of others, or even the simplicity of others, so when I had the opportunity to attempt a fashion magazine I wasn’t going to turn it down. Initially I had no clue what kind of fashion magazine I wanted to create and so when it came to shooting for it I didn’t really know where it was going to take me, this however was refreshing in a way and it allowed me to explore more in terms of photographic techniques and also made me explore more magazines. In the end I chose to create my magazines in the style of DAMAN, I chose this magazine as it was the one that best fit with my images and also allowed me to come up with various content ideas.
DA MAN is an English language Indonesian bimonthly men's fashion and lifestyle magazine, aimed at male readers aged between 20 and 40. The magazine was first published in May 2007 and features exclusive interviews and photo shoots of Hollywood actors as well as Indonesian artists. Trying to add my own twist on the magazines I thought that I would attempt to make an article on starting out as an actor but also keeping to the fashion element of the article. As I came to making the magazines with my photos already shot, I had to find the story that was already in the pictures. Thankfully the guy that I used as my model is at Lanes Theater college in London and has been training in ballet and drama since he was five years old, a boy destined for the spot light since he was small. From knowing this then came my idea of writing a piece on him and his experience in the before stage of becoming a star, but also trying to keep an element of fashion in the article.

These templates allowed me to get creative with the use of titles and text and gave me the opportunity show my two favorite photos. However, when it came to writing the actual article I hit a blank wall and couldn’t manage to produce an article on his life and fashion. In the end I used place holder text to fill the article so I could still develop a professional looking double page spread.
The seventh and eighth photos are the ones that I created. I am happy with my final magazines but i am dissapointed that i didnt mange to write a piece that went along wth it.
Oh comely magazine:
When I was researching what kind of magazines I wanted to write, oh comely really struck me with its beautiful and simplistic layouts and its content featuring; stories, music, films, fashion, mischief and ideas. This exited me as I had a lot of free range in terms of content and it allowed me to really think about the type of story I wanted to produce.
I decided to write a story on my sister Josie based on the music she writes and why she writes such incredible songs.
When making the magazine I had a lot of fun in Photoshop trying to replicate the oh comely signature, I also really enjoyed finding the wright pale colors to match though out my design.
The ninth and tenth images I used as my rough templates, the following two where the designs I came out with.
Overall I am happy with the spreads that I created. Presentation wise I feel as though I have captured the aesthetic of the magazine, using pastille colors for headlines and subtitles, also following the magazines style by using very few capital letters and keeping the layouts simplistic. However, I feel as though I could have written a lot better in terms of the story although with oh comely magazines they are laid out over four pages and it’s the last two that go into depth.
Cornwall Living magazine:
This magazine idea came about when I was looking into cool places to go and take pictures, to which I found a derelict motel and thus came the idea of doing a magazine article on its history and what the future may hold, I then chose to do it in the style of Cornwall living as content wise it is something that could be seen in the magazine. It was also something that I really enjoyed looking into as when I was going around the site all of the things that had been left behind fascinated me. When creating the magazine, I didn’t copy a set template and instead created my own design that looks as though it would be seen in the magazine. I did this as there is not really a set design that runs through magazine and also to make the article more original.
The final two images are the magazines that I created.
By my choice of layout, I got to show all of the photos that I wanted to and it gave me the freedom of being able to write as much text as I wanted to. I feel as though the layout is something that would be seen in the magazine and that the story of the piece is a project I would like to take further. This magazine is the one that I am pitching.
The biggest problem I faced when doing all the magazine assignments was when it came to printing, I realized that I had created my spreads as if they were going into a book and so it would only let me print them on two a4 pieces of paper, so I had to go back and recreate all of my magazines on a landscape a3 piece of paper, I then had to resizes all of the magazines and change the layouts slightly so that they would fit on the bigger spread.
Overall I have really enjoyed making the magazines and I now feel a lot more confident when working in InDesign. I look forwards to taking my sda on and seeing if I can expand it to a larger project.

France Télécom phone cards (appearance and layout)
After the introduction and classification of French phone cards, I look at the appearance and layout of France Télécom phone cards, which includes, in spite of the title, even French chip phone cards before France Télécom assumed that name. Graphic layout of the cards has remained much the same over the years. Describing them, I remind the time when I cataloged and filed French phone cards, when phone cards were my biggest amusement, and the thick French chip cards in PVC were, and are, my favorites.
As proof of my words, I use The Collector's Bible, that is the subtitle of Phonecote catalog, mine is Phonecote 2002,[^] and by the images in Colnect. As any good collector of phone cards does, I look at the pictured side of a phone card, where the image of a French phone card covers the entire space, and they find chip and cartouche, and then at the back side of the phone card.
La puce
In the figurative side of the card, to the left, there is la puce, that is the chip in French, and an arrow suggest how to insert the card into the reader of the payphone. In phone card issued before 07/93 la puce is at the top,[^] that is in Afnor position,[^] and then slightly lower,[^] in ISO position. Still today I excite to look at the incisions in the chip. The chip of some card has a contour (in French, avec entourages), other has not (sans entourages).
Types of puces are (the manufacturing number is progressive):
Bull: BULL 1, BULL 2.
Gemplus: GEM0 0, GEM 1[^] (T2G), GEM 2.
Landis & Gyr: LG 1.
Oberthur: OB1,[^] OB2, OB3.
Orga: OR1.

Cartouche
The cartouche of units number is in one of the three corners of the figurative side of a French card, the corner closest to the chip is excluded. From the date 07/93, in any cards is in vertical position, in the right side, with direction bottom to top.[^] Following the chronology of the Public France Télécom phone cards, which are only two values, 50 unités and 120 unités:
until 1989, cartouche is on two lines. In a rectangle, in block, Telecarte and, under, a number (50 or 120) followed by unités. Alongside, on the two lines, a handset with keys.[^] In Phonecote, the list of cartouches is in the tab of the last page, inside, this is cartouche 1.

Cartouche 3, cartouche 4 and cartouche 5 are: Télécarte cinq for Five units,[^] Télécarte vingt-cinq for Twenty-five units[^] and there is also Télécarte cinquante.
Back side of a French chip phone cards
Turning a card, from the part that first attracts, the side figured, to the other, what is commonly called the back, for about 2/3 of its length both figure and text, that pick up the main theme of the Télécarte. In the remaining space, on the right, in a white space, information about la carte itself. Reading from top to bottom:

Continuing the "reading" of the back of a French phone card, started in the previous paragraph, it comes across the logo. Over 20 years of télécartes' publication, which have been fun, and 'crazy', collectors of so many parts of the world, logo of French chip cards has rarely changed. In total they are only 5:
Logo "Moreno", a square and below a vertical line with an appendix at the top. It appears, in the bottom-right, in all French telecarte between 1991 and 1997,[^] on which is also printed the logo numbered by Phonecote as 3.
PTT Telecommunications logo. Les "Pyjamas" have this logo,[^] which was the logo of holographic French phone cards (Les Holographiques). For Phonecote is logo 1.
From 1990, logo is a rectangle and France Telecom in two-lines, France is high along the edge of the rectangle; a symbol is after the rectangle.[^] For Phonecote is logo 2.
From 04/93 issue date, logo is France Telecom on one line, preceded by a symbol in a circle.[^] For Phonecote is logo 3.
Since 03/00, on one line, logo & france telecom, where com is in another color. In many Télécartes & and com are orange,[^] which reflects France Telecom's corporate change with the acquisition of Orange.
The position of the logo, in the right space on the back of the card, may be different from the one in this list, since 02/00 is at top.
Serial number
Element that can not miss in a telephone card is serial number. From 1994, in télécarte, below serial number, is the number of puce, numbers and acronyms that always deserve the glance of a careful collector.
Types of serial numbers are more than a dozen, and include the type of print, color, and font size. I mention any: impression small, impression big and impression very big (in French, pétit embouti, grand embouti et trés grand embouti), 9 red numbers (9 Numéros rouges) and 9 blacks numbers (9 Numéros noirs), 9 numbers to impact (9 numerós per impact), simple number with A at the side[^].
The first character of the serial number is a capital letter, bound to the manufacturer of the card, then a number, which is the last digit of the year, the third character is for the month, a number from January (1) to September (9), a letter from October to December (A,B,C). The service text to the back of a French phone card is a very simple ad space, with the name of the company that manages advertising on telecarte, a message, and the address and phone number to call, or, since there is, a web site.

Print run and dates
From 10/90 onwards, France Télécom's telecarte have stamped the circulation and card's issue date, separated by a hyphen (-).
