Spanish opposition slams government for negligence over Valencia floods
Spain’s state institutions did not adequately inform local authorities about measures to be taken before and during this week’s floods in the Valencia region that killed at least 155 people, opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said.
The leader of the Partido Popular (PP), Feijóo complained on Thursday that state institutions led by the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (PSOE) “did not inform” the governments and city councils of the affected areas, some of which were governed by the PP.
When I say (that no official information has been received) about anything, it is about anything.
The tragedy that struck Valencia and Castilla la Mancha regions on Tuesday night did not seem to have received the highest alert level (1) from Spain’s National Civil Protection System. Valencia’s PP government declared an alert level 2, meaning that central government resources would be deployed, but all emergency coordination would remain at the local level.
Former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont also criticised the authorities for their slow response.
As the hours pass, the number of victims of the climate catastrophe in the Valencian Country increases and the need for basic products and services grows for thousands and thousands of trapped or isolated people. The priority continues to be people, their safety and their lives. It will take a lot to recover from this tragedy, but the people who are put to extreme tests like these come out stronger and more cohesive, and they can change everything. Starting with the rulers who have not been able to foresee and anticipate the measures that could have reduced very significantly the number of human lives that have been lost.
However, Valencia government spokesman Carlos Mazón (PP) on Thursday thanked the operation launched by the emergency services and for being “so close and so quickly present” in the affected areas.
Sánchez, meanwhile, said the government would work “by land, sea and air” with Valencia’s regional authorities for as long as necessary.
In circumstances such as those that the Valencian Community is going through, it is necessary to put the public sector in value. We will work day and night to find the missing and the bodies of the dead, to help restore normality as soon as possible.

“Ley Trans” will allow a legal sex change in four months from applying to anyone older than 11, without having to visit a doctor or take cross-sex hormones.” Reblog if you would rather be called a “transphobe” than be ok with sex change surgeries on children
By Andreia Nobre Feb 9, 2023
On February 8, 2023, the Spanish senate approved the “Ley Trans” law with 144 votes.
“Ley Trans” will allow a legal sex change in four months from applying to anyone older than 11, without having to visit a doctor or take cross-sex hormones.” There were 108 votes against the new law, which will be sent to the congress for final approval a week later.
The opposition to the Ley Trans in Spain, which includes several political parties and feminist groups, claims that the senate ignored the concerns raised in other European countries. They are referring to cases such as the Scottish self-id law, which was approved in a similar manner last December, with “minimal and technical modifications” - and then subjected to a block by Westminster. The opposition to the Ley Trans include the political parties Partido Popular (PP), Vox, Ciudadanos (CS) and Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN) who urged the Spanish government to "look at the countries around us" such as Finland, Sweden or the United Kingdom. They claim that these countries “advanced with these laws and now are not only ‘putting the brakes on’ them, but are also amending them” to address the concerns raised.
The opposition cited the closing of Tavistock gender clinic in the UK, and the growing number of people who have been harmed by the “affirmative model” for “gender dysphoria” and say that “their lives are infinitely worse because they suffer from depression or suicide attempts.” Giving Sweden as an example, the opposition warned about the dangers of hormonal and medical treatments for minors, which have now been stopped in the country. El Mundo journal cited Reem Alsalem, UN Special Rapporteur, who said in an interview for the same paper “It is very dangerous that children can change their bodies without any restrictions.”
Alsalem, whose statements were brought by the party PP to the senate, also spoke about “self-identification” with the opposite sex, saying that "women's rights may once again be limited” and that "individual will is not enough" to deal with “gender identity.”
The UN Rapporteur also expressed concern about people losing their jobs for talking about sex-based rights.” Spanish feminist group Alianza Contra el Borrado de las Mujeres (Against Female Erasure Alliance) released a statement on the day the law was approved in Senate saying that the “the parallels in the processing, content and objectives of the Law of ‘Yes is Yes’ and the Ley Trans are disturbing."
Contra El Borrado points out that both laws “violate regulations and international treaties in force that protect the rights of women and children.”

Spain's Partido Popular (PP) was foolish if it thought that European People's Party (EPP) leader Manfred Weber would break the grand coalition with the S&D and Liberals in the European Parliament in exchange for torpedoing future commissioner Teresa Ribera, Ignacio Molina, an expert on EU politics, told Euractiv.es. Molina is a senior researcher and EU policy expert at the Real Instituto Elcano, one of Spain's most prestigious think tanks. After a tense week in which the formation of the second European Commission, headed by Ursula von der Leyen, was up in the air because of the PP's veto on Ribera, the grand coalition of the EPP and the Socialist Group (S&D) with the Liberals has been saved, but at the cost of many wounds, Molina warned. “If the PP really thought that they were capable of convincing the EPP to veto Ribera and thus break the grand coalition, they were really fooling themselves,” Molina told Euractiv.es. An agreement was finally announced last Wednesday between the EPP, S&D, and Renew Europe leaders, paving the way for the second von der Leyen team to be sworn in this week. Ribera will be the future commissioner for competition and vice president for a clean, fair, and competitive transition. “It is likely that this week, the PP will abstain (in the vote on the new Commission). We will have to see to what extent they maintain their hard-line or accept the path of pragmatism which Weber has imposed by not wanting to break the grand coalition with the S&D group,” Molina stressed. According to the expert, although the PSOE and the PP have on many occasions coordinated their positions and voted together in the European Parliament, in the case of Ribera, the positions have become highly polarised, weakening this “unity”, which does not exist in Madrid, Molina recalled.

Wjhy do they call the PP centre-right. It's not. It's right-wing to the core. They even go into coalition with the far-right Vox on both a regional and national level.

No podemos permitir que el sufrimiento se use para abrir la puerta al autoritarismo. i am a foreigner genuinely trying to learn more so please don’t mistake this for something bad. i notice you tag things as aragon but never with spain. do you feel totally separate/wish independence? or is this just my confusion?
Hi! I appreciate your question. In Aragon we have been extremely Castilianized, at least when comparing ourselves to our Basque and Catalan siblings. Not tagging the posts with "spain" is one of the ways that I feel I can reclaim a bit more of our culture and heritage and keep it our own.
As for if I personally wish for independence, I do, but I also understand that it's basically unthinkable, especially taking into account the political climate we have. There are two main aragonesista parties, Partido Aragonés (PAR, literally 'Aragonese Party'), and Chunta Aragonesista (CHA, literally 'Aragonesist Assembly'). The PAR is basically a PP (Popular Party, the main Spanish right wing party) lapdog, and CHA... well they're left wing (or they try to be), they joined the Sumar left-wing coalition in the national and european elections, but they're all over the place in my opinion. Finally, there is another party called Puyalón de Cuchas (literally 'Left-wing Rise'), which do call for independence and a socialist Aragonese state. They also collaborate with EH Bildu and the Bloque Nacionalista Galego, for example. All this to say that I don't think most Aragonese people would take our independence kindly, we have been too accustomed to getting the leftovers of the current Spanish state.

3 survivors talk about one of the worst terrorist attacks Spain has ever suffered and the political manipulation by the government at the time (Partido Popular [PP], the conservative party in my country). Very hard to watch, but the testimony of the survivors is very important.

Spain appears destined for painful political negotiations after Sunday’s elections, when no single party won enough parliamentary seats to form a government. Prospects for coalition-building now remain uncertain.
With over 99% of the vote counted, the center-right Partido Popular (PP) is set to come in first, winning 136 seats. The upstart far-right Vox party, a possible coalition partner to PP, is forecast to win 33 seats.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s ruling center-left Socialist party meanwhile is on course to win 122 seats, with likely coalition partners Sumar at 31 seats.
In order to govern, a party or coalition must achieve a working majority of 176 seats in the 350-seat legislature.
PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo said he was “very proud” during a speech at party headquarters, lauding the fact that his party’s vote share increased from 21% to 33%.
Despite a party-like atmosphere at the PP headquarters, supporters of the opposition party told CNN they had expected a clearer victory.
“We thought we would get much more,” said Mercedes Gónzalez, an English professor in Madrid.
And Fernando del Rio, a 21-year-old web designer from Madrid, also said he was dissatisfied. “People spoke against the socialist government, but that didn’t materialize in votes,” he said.
Outside the Socialist party headquarters, meanwhile, supporters were upbeat.
Agustin Saludes, 64, a civil servant in pre-retirement, told CNN that he felt happy with the results. “Because we didn’t expect to get so many votes. We thought we would lose. It was a tough campaign against Sanchez,” he said.
“(Sanchez) has to make deals with the pro-independence parties in Catalonia and the Basque Country to win investiture,” Saludes added.
