No, Wings of Fire naming system is not limited and you easily find names that aren't in the books
Mudwings: Earth, swamps, animals/plants that reside in swamps, shades of brown, diamonds and minerals, synonyms of swamps.
I couldn't find an exact number but there are many different kinds of swamps and wetlands each with hundreds of animals and plant species.
Seawing: Sea-related objects or wildlife, shades of aquamarine colors, aquamarine gemstones, aquatic anatomies, naturally-occurring oceanic phenomenons
"As of 2023, more than 242,000 marine species have been documented"-Wikipedia
Rainwings:Rainforest animals, fruits, trees and other plants, positive adjectives
"To date, there is at least 40,000 different kinds of plants, 427 kinds of mammals, 1,300 kinds of birds, 378 kinds of reptiles, more than 400 kinds of amphibians, and around 3,000 freshwater fish are living in Amazon."- Wikipedia
Many websites claim that there are over 2000 species of fruit(not to mention many of these fruits have hundreds of varieties that also have names) and thousands of positive adjectives in the English language
Nightwing: Names descriptive of the dragon's personality, names relating to an aptitude or job, names describing or relating to their physical appearance, night-themed names, names inspired by the NightWing powers, names meant to give a sense of strength or mightiness.
Do I even need to explain, you can literally mix and match words like Warrior cats. If u can't come up with a unique Nightwing name then you truly don't have any creativity
Sandwings: features of the desert, desert flora and fauna, fire and heat-related things, colors
over 500 bird species, 130 mammal species, 100 reptiles species and more than 2,500 plant species in the desert- Some teaching website
Not to mention you can use savanna animals as well because who cares
Skywings: Mountain-dwelling creatures or birds, features of the landscape, gemstones or minerals, actions during flight, shades of red and orange, and generic fire-related words
Uhhh I could find exact numbers here but there r over 500 kinds of gemstone and minerals
Icewings: Ice formations, arctic animals, words for "white" in various languages, polar landscapes, polar weather, real-life mountains, blue and white gemstones, cold seasons.
21,000 known species of highly cold-adapted mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates, plants and fungi and microbe species in the Arctic
I could go on to the Pantala tribes but I'm lazy so I'm sure you can guess how many butterflies, moths, bugs and plants species exist in the world
Now let's say that there are a hundred named characters of each tribe (they aren't it's more like 20-50) that still leaves hundreds to thousands of options for each tribe. You're right it doesn't matter if u name your oc Mango, Clay, or Turtle or whatever I'm not here to gatekeep and people in rl do share names but am making the point that there are options. U don't know the hundreds of fruits or bugs or whatever. Just Google it lol.
It's true that Tui uses the more popular names but the fans are still left with thousands
Not to mention that there is a whole wiki dedicated to naming Wof ocs
https://wings-of-fire-names.fandom.com/wiki/SandWings
It doesn’t matter if your oc shares a name with a canon character, the WOF naming system is very fun but rather limiting

Just curious, where does Emerald live? Pyrrhia/Pantala? OR DID YOU MAKE YOUR OWN CONTINENT- ISLAND??? TROPICAL?? PRETTY DRAGON- PRETTY KINGDOM?!?!?
UHHHHH I DONT KNOW BUT I DO REMEMBER THAT THEY LIVE KINDA UNDERGROUND? their names are based off of mineral deposits and crystals and such so I’d imagine it’d be similar to how the old night wing home was a cave but had those open to the sky canopies

Longer than a bit, but here we go! Torbern!
This silly fellow is based off of Torbernite, a radioactive mineral. Other inspirations include a couple of bosses from Limbus Company (It's a bit obvious with the quill kjhdfsgh.) I made him primarily due to Mudwing villains. Specifically, how I cannot find any for the life of me. And MudWings seemed pretty neat! So, I thought I'd give them a silly mad scientist!
Torbern's character arc starts a good while before arc 1.
It's right around here! The real kicking off point of the story happened before/around the death of Tempest. Torbern and the troop he was in was attacked with an ill-timed ambush from SkyWings from around the mountains. While it wasn't a 'everyone died but him' type story, they did all die in the end. Deep wounds and heavy bleeding finished off those that weren't outright dead. Torbern himself kept alive with a few subtle animus enchanted objects on him.
It wasn't like he'd be missed, anyways. A soldier out in the middle of nowhere with everyone else dead could hardly be judged for deserting. He hardly had any love for the others in his troop, the cohesion of the group deteriorated quite a bit towards the end.
So he fled. Off to the mountains to find a cave. Somewhere he could sit and mess around with his magic, to finally be free. The experiments started simple, what might happen if he does this? What might happen if he does that? The wording needed to be kept precise, or so he heard...
Eventually, though, he began going a bit crazy. Time in a cave doing little more than testing things does that, which eventually leads to the creation of the first quill.
The quill here is quite interesting! He specifically made it so that he could enchant anything with animus. Because it was specifically enchanted to burn the words into what is being written on. Indeed, those are what happened to the lines.
This was not without the book, either! This was long before Pantala had been discovered, but he needed to bind the paper together so it wouldn't be finicky while writing notes. So, he 'stapled' them together with animus, slowly losing himself more and more.
It is at this point that the timing of the story as it relates to the canon books matters little. Wholly uninterested in the war unless someone came by, he continued his experiments, which became increasingly odd:
His quill had a flame, flame spread embers, embers were an object that could be arranged in a pattern; thus, writing was possible. Could he write on a piece of air? If he were shifting air to the left, what does it move? If he ignited a patch of ground, what might occur? What might burn?
His last experiment before the creation of the second quill confirmed his insanity. Despite warping his own scales to make them 'more amiable to a written word' and enchanting his claws to an absolute steadiness so that he may write easier, they were at least reasonable. This was not.
'Meat is an object, and so is a rock, could they not be treated as the same concept, bridging to what is 'edible'? Could a quality not be added to another object? It might be possible. Having a food source that violates the standard would allow room for more experiments.'
Success or failure, it mattered not. The very idea was illogical. Transferring a concept from one object to another. Not soon after, the second quill was made. This one wrote into an object, rather than on it. Bones were something, weren't they? His eyes had already deteriorated from the random bits of ash and a few other stray failures.
That was rude, so he fixed that, a few brief jots into his skull and all would be well with his sight! Well, that would be painful indeed if he didn't turn off pain a while back. He only needed to be informed of the issue, pain would destabilize the claws and cause issues with his head!
Eventually, he got in his mind a very interesting idea. If he could change around an object, and he could politely ask the walls to move now and then, what of other materials? Could they not be attached and utilized as needed? A material source was near, shown by the shifting walls. False gold, a supply of pyrite, ready to be experimented with.
A couple dragons, wandering about? Those are good test subjects! He's going to be underground doing tests most of his days, so why would he need the wings? He could hardly care about their species at this point. If they're friendly enough, he'll perform a few tests, and send them on their way. If they start screaming, attacking, or generally be bothersome, he'll just use them for experiments until the unfortunate expiration of their shell!
Eventually, he succeeded! The pyrite now replaced his wings, jutting out like the bones were overtaken and overflowed down his spine. Of course, he turned them green because he liked the color. He also added some quills to the end! Didn't stop them from popping a bit, as pyrite does when it gets too heated, but it worked!
Of course, having flat minerals attached to his back would be positively boring, so it would have needed to be interesting! He simply made them controllable! Able to fuse and split, extend or sharpen into an edge, change shape into a paw or a blade.
Truthfully Torbern could no longer in good faith, be called a MudWing; at this point he was closer to a beast of curiosity driven to its illogical conclusion. Being such a creature, so potentially dangerous to the tribes, of course there would have been a prophecy. Something was off about this one though. So many enchantments, miscellaneous or off-hand, in and on the walls or written into himself, eventually culminated in something interesting:
Torbern punched a Torbern-sized hole in his own prophecy.
He never particularly liked the concept of fate. If he was going to move his arm to the left, it would be because he wanted to; it most certainly wouldn't be due to his actions being predefined by some nebulous force he could hardly even interact with! While normally, prophecies tell of what might happen, with a vague descriptor of who is involved, Torbern's prophecy flips that a bit.
Beware, all, beware of one;
Be wary of he that has abandoned the sun.
With experiments of one and all, with the air asked to burn
Near a spired place while the sky turns.
Where backwards is slantwise, a dragon turns monstrous.
Where onwards is downwards, a madness grows.
Where the pages and walls scorch, what soars are gone
Transmuted with scorched letters and false-gold.
A MudWing is gone while a creature remains,
An enigma forged on its own.
And if a soul wishes to be not in a test
He should be left well enough alone.
Not all questions need to be asked:
He queried himself with an answer, oh so many times.
Not all solutions need be unpleasant:
He must be ignored or solved, lest several thousands die.
Quick question yall
What'd yall think if I were to post a ramble or two about Torbern, my silly lil MudWing goob? I have, many a thing to say bout em!
EDIT: Alright uhh, I'll post a wee ramble in a bit
#tw body horror#holy shit all the body horror#didn't tag it in the ref since it's at least possible to see em as a bit silly but this one's a bit different-#wof oc#wof#wings of fire#Yall're free to ask questions on him! I'm not perfectly well-versed in the intricacies of WoF so I might've tripped over a lore thing.#I also might've forgotten something. Torb is quite overtuned for a first oc.
