DAY 8: Beijing Rickshaw ride, Panda Gallery, Summer Palace & the mall

Started the day with a rickshaw ride through the Hutong District, a maze of narrow alleys, local merchants and restaurants and basic housing (shared kitchens and use of public toilets).  A definite flavor of the simple every day life of some in Beijing.

The largest zoo in China, the Beijing Zoo’s Panda gallery offers Giant Pandas  indoor and outdoor habitats and plenty of bamboo. Though mostly sleeping, these national treasures were adorable and a fun short stop.

Rounding out our morning was a stroll through the Summer Palace, a vast complex of lakes, gardens and palace buildings.  It was most notably the summer residence of the Empress Dowager Cixi, the “Dragon Queen” who controlled the Quing dynasty government for almost 50 years (1861-1908).  

A UNESCO World Heritage site, it  displays lush natural landscapes of hills and open water and combines with pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges which form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value.  It was a peaceful pleasure to stroll along the long ornately painted covered corridor and view the Dragon boats gliding across Kunming Lake.  At the summit of Longevity Hill (created from the lake excavation) is perched the majestic 9 story Tower of Buddhist Incense - a spectacular sight!  

I so enjoy the Chinese naming of their buildings, as today we saw the Sea of Wisdom, Hall of Joy & Longevity, Garden of Harmonious Pleasures and the Pavilion of Precious Clouds….so poetic! The Summer Palace was my favorite sight....after the Great Wall of course!

Our afternoon was customized for Wade’s curiosity not only of the ancient, but also the cutting edge.  We went to one of the largest malls in Beijing with the goal of visiting a Huawei store and BYD (Build Your Dream) electric vehicle showroom.  We found the Huawei store right off and were very impressed with their newest mobile phone that has one screen on the front and when you unfold the phone makes another seamless small tablet sized screen!  They also had a watch that contained earbuds inside, large screen TV’s, their own brand of EV’s. Very cool!

Although there was no BYD store in the mall, there were at least 10 other electric car showrooms, including Tesla, HiPhi, Zeeker, Avatar, Arcfox, AITO and even Volkswagen!  They ranged from sports cars to minivans and SUV type models and were priced from USD $25,000 to $85,000.  All had sleek interiors and lots of screens of various shapes, one featured an AI bot, VR glasses and sensors that opened and shut the doors for you.  It was quite a surprise for us to see the huge variety and of both fully electric and hybrid brands available....and the color choices!!

Other mall stops included a DJI drone store and a store selling robots for mowing the lawn: the “GOAT”, and a robotic Rumba that also mops the floors.  For the most part, the other stores were jewelry stores (lots!), and international chain stores.

Schooling Then & Now...

During the closure of schools due to pandemic from March 2020 till date (End Oct 2020), I have heard how classes are being held and attended from home at least in Metros. I am reminded of my school days during1954-66 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

My first school was a family run primary school in the residential complex that we lived. I studied there as it was convenient to attend and my elder sister also went to the same school. It was housed in a bungalow with four to five rooms, each housing one standard. It was from 11 am to 5 pm. It was a traditional school with standard syllabus. The school was co-ed and we sat on floor. Our school bag had a book or two and a slate (black stone) and white chalk. We walked to the school. The medium of instruction was Gujarati

Then I went to a special primary school run by Sarabhais (Vikram Sarabhai’s family). The school had four classes, one each for one standard. Each class had 10-12 students only. The school started at 8.30 am and till 4 pm. On arrival all children would be given a glass of milk and then academic lessons would start till lunch at 12 noon. The children brought roti/chapati from home but all else was served by the school-Dal, Rice, Vegetables, Papad, pickles etc. Children from class 4 normally managed the lunch service, though food was cooked by others. School was co-ed and we hardly carried any books or other items in the school bag except a box of roti/chapati. I travelled by the city bus to commute to school. The medium of instruction was Gujarati.

After lunch, the non-academic activities were the main focus. These included music (mainly folk), folk dance (garba/dandiya), painting, carpentry, stitching/tailoring etc. the teachers of high caliber came to teach these special skills or hobby. Our music teacher was an AIR (All India Radio) artiste. We also undertook projects of a long duration. For example, in carpentry class we built Sam’s Cabin on the treetop (the school had a large area). We also staged plays in open air once a year. Each and every student must participate in the play and hence they were selected accordingly. One was “Alibaba and Forty Thieves”, and another was “Gulliver’s travel to pigmy land” (a shadow play).

The school also imparted general knowledge in the most effective way. We once slept in the school so that we could be taken to an observatory at 3 am to see the sky and the stars. We were once taken to the Municipal office to see the model of Nehru Bridge under construction (before1960) followed by a visit to the riverbed to see the construction. Children were encouraged to explore and most of us would sit on the wall (on the riven bank) just watch the Sabarmati river in flood. We were allowed to climb trees and play with our teachers. I found it to be a good place for an all around development.

Then I was admitted to a popular Gujarati medium school which boasted of the large area (I think 300 acres or more) and it followed Gandhian philosophy. Our uniform was from Khadi. The trust was Jain. The school was co-ed and I commuted by city bus or walked the 3 km short route on some days with other students and a teacher. Theschool was from 10.40 am to 5.10 pm with two short breaks. Saturday was half day- 7.30 am to 11 am.

The middle school (std 5 to 7) was in a separate building about 500 meters from either entry. We sat on floor with a wooden stool in front. The school bag had textbooks, notebooks and a pencil box along with a snacks box. In addition to academic classes we had optional selected non-academic courses. Music was compulsory and my weakest subject. One could choose from music, painting, stitching/tailoring or agriculture. I opted for agriculture. I was given a piece of land (5 x 10 ft) and allowed to grow vegetables etc. The vegetables were available for sale and I used to take some home.

The high school (std 8 to 11) was in a larger building near the main gate. The compass box was added to books and notebooks. We used to write with an ink pen.The classes had a bench. Between these buildings was a huge playground for volleyball, kho-kho and kabaddi etc.We had a prayer hall covered but open from sides where all students would gather first thingin the morning and pray. At this gathering, we were also able to enjoy cultural programs based on the festivals and some speeches by leading persons- politicians, writers, thinkers, and ex-students.

During the entire school years, I attended classes regularly and was not permitted to attend any private tuition, In any case private tuition was not so popular then, My father insisted that I asked all my doubts to the teachers in the class or after class in the teachers (staff) room. I hardly recall any parents’ teacher meeting. Strangely I had not spoken to any girl student at my school or class throughout the eleven years, though it was co-ed. I loved outdoor games and in the eight standard I joined a hockey coaching center (outside) run by an ex-India player. This led me to go for state school level hockey tournament and participated in all India school meet in Shillong in Feb,1966.

My daughter went to an international school in Japan and her experience was different than schooling in India. She walked to school everyday for 20 minutes and carried only an umbrella and lunch on some days. She played basketball, hockey, and volleyball. She would go ice skating or on over night trips to gain knowledge not just from textbooks but from experiences. When she came back to study in India, she found the education system hard and competitive and teachers had minimal interest in teaching except for scoring high marks.

I now will attempt to compare the above school life with present day school life in metros before COVID-19 (March 2020). Though I have no first-hand experience of it, I have gathered it from parents of school going kids. Most of these go to a private school and not municipal or govt school in various parts of the globe.

Before COVID-19 struck, the school time was 8 am to 2 pm and probably five days a week. Kids must carry a huge/heavy school bag containing water bottle, books, notebooks, compass box, lunch box (for two breaks). Kids do use ball point pen or gel pen. The school bag weighs a lot and there are complaints of kids, but no solution seems to be in sight. Most kids go to school by school bus or auto-rickshaw or dropped by parents. Hardly anybody walks to school. A lot of focus is on academic work and homework. Most schools lack a playground. Some schools do encourage extra-curricular activities, but most kids take up extra-curricular activities because of the parents or peer pressure. Some govt or municipal schools run two shifts to make maximum use of the infrastructure- school building. Most classes have 50 children in each room.

Many of the schools have annual day and they are a huge burden on parents both in terms of time and expenses. Most items on annual day celebrations lack heritage or folk influence on dance or music or singing.  Most kids (also their teachers) do watch tv and are influenced by its content. Many kids have the luxury of travel domestically or internationally with their parents on holidays. I do not see many activities among school going kids in residential complexes. Rural schools might still be following the historical timing (11 am to 5 pm) and the syllabus with almost poor teachers.

After March 22, 2020 the schools were closed, and students and teachers were encouraged to attend online classes. In last six months (till Oct end) the schools are closed and online classes have become the routine.

In metros, many private schools are actively following the online class concept. I understand the online class can be attended provided one has a laptop or a tablet or a smart mobile with adequate data and speed for Wi-Fi connection. The classes are for four hours a day. The homework is also given online and submitted online. In most cases projects given seem to be done by parents and not children which is not the best way to learn. While writing exams adults at home keep prompting the child to ensure high score /marks are achieved. Teaching a child short cuts or to cheat is not beneficial in the long run. Parents forget that getting marks above 90% should not be the only aim for the child.

Many families are facing the shortage of hardware as the parent or parents attend office from home (WFH) and they need the same hardware- laptop or tablet and a strong WiFi connection. If there is more than one child attending class/school from home the shortage of hardware and infrastructure is felt more and is also a financial burden too.

Poor people are finding it hard to attend classes online. My domestic help has three children going to school and that is either municipal or govt school. They also hold classes online. But the poor family has only two mobiles and only one is smart. Her husband is a driver but has lost his job.

I dare not imagine what is happening at rural schools and their classes with no infrastructure like WiFi connectivity or smart mobile at home. Some may not have even electricity at home. I hope that large IT firms instead of running schools in rural India under the name of NGO’s should have ensured a good e-learning system but that seems like a dream. This would have been helpful during these times and need not depend on poor quality teachers.

In all the above activities the major problem is that children have lost physical touch with school, class, and teacher. They surely miss outdoor activities (sports etc.) with their classmates. They also must be missing the cultural activities on the festivals.

The mental stress of being confined to a residence for so long must be very real and parents must be finding it difficult to attend to it among their children and themselves.

Conclusion…….

I do believe that old time classes at school and freedom to mingle/play with classmates and children from neighborhood were great contributors to develop a child’s all faculties. The emphasis was outdoor activities and non-academic interests to be followed. The child was not stressed with pressures from parents, siblings, or peer day in and out.

Prior to lockdown due to pandemic, the metro school going kid was stressed with many issues- get up early, catch the bus or transport or do homework or dress properly with or without makeup for girls, etc. Parents were also stressed to see that their child is not lagging only in academic pursuit but also otherwise.

After lock down the situation has worsened for the child. The child is confined to the four walls of the residence with same family members and has no chance to go outdoors. (recent relaxation may permit going out but many parents do not want to take the risk). Outdoor activities are almost none and 24x7 the child is using handheld devices –Laptop, tablet, or smart phone to do schoolwork and to play games, also to see cartoons or other entertaining content on TV.

I pray for early release of restrictions due to COVID-19 and restoration of schools to normal working in general and in rural areas in particular.

INVISIBLE GREENS All alone, he rides back to green Riding along the streets of Mysore, as an art student at Shree Kala Niketana School of Art, what haunted the imagination of Sujith Kumar was not the magnificent palace or the people moving without any hurry along the crowded streets of the laid-back city. Sure, he would sketch monuments and human faces to his heart’s content but rather than the beauty and solitude of humans it was the cycles and auto rickshaws that provoked Sujith's imagination, thus kindling his creative power. “Had there been only cycles and auto rickshaws in this world we would have been a happier lot, the world would have been greener and healthier,” says the artist. His words also have that minimalist touch, like his lines. It was this ‘healthy’ thought, which inspired Sujith to embark upon a series on auto rickshaws and cycles, which he would call ‘Traffic Control’. He sees the same cycle and auto rickshaw in different perspective, but every time you see these images you realise that it is a different one though it is the same. As Heraclitus once said, “You cannot step twice into the same river, for other waters are continually flowing in.” Likewise whenever you draw the image it becomes a new one. And that newness is the invisible force behind Sujith's compositions. “Cycle is a dream and a carrier of life for the rustic Indian middle class. Every time I look at the same cycle it appears to be a new one to me; in a way it is the cycle of life…” he says. Though the cycles and auto rickshaws in Sujith’s paintings are placed in an urban setting, it is far away from the hullabaloo of the city life. It is utter silence that pervades in these compositions. With a few suggestive strokes of the electric lamp posts and traffic signals he gives a picture of the urban life (and lifelessness, at times). His earlier paintings of the human life in the urban dwellings also have the same quality of silence and solitude. In the backdrop of the burning issue of global warming, there is an eco-sensitive approach in Sujith’s works. When he sees urbanscapes without the onslaught of any motor vehicles except the auto rickshaws, his art is actually getting transformed into a vehicle of the ecological concerns of a straightforward human being. Interestingly, the image of the water bottle that crops up here and there in his compositions should be seen in this context only. As we all know water is the casualty of the urban onslaught. “I can’t see any humanity in city life, there is no peace…. It’s all rat race, but in villages you see the real humanity living in peace…” In a way Sujith talks about going back to nature with his tiny images of cycles. However, the politics and ecological concerns apart, what strikes the viewer is the ease with which he handles the lines, which is not very common in oil paintings. And there lies the strength of the artist who brought perfection to his lines over the years with his pencil. “As a student in Mysore it was a routine for me to draw people, places and objects to my heart’s content,” says this young artist. “My concern had always been to create an object with minimum strokes.” Though in the initial stage Sujith’s canvases were the playground of human forms, later they vanished into the hazy background of the urban settings and the cycles and auto rickshaws emerged from the invisible streets. Despite the recurrence of the same images in almost all canvases, what one feels is a kind of continuity from one composition to another. With the use of colours and the strength of his lines Sujith recreates a world that we have all failed to recognize, though it is around us. Sujith’s cycle is riding back to nature. Emma Ruth Rundle: Fever Dreams in the Season of the Witch // KEXP

“I don’t think anything I’m doing is witchy at all,” says Emma Ruth Rundle.

I’ve just put forward a journalistic hypothesis linking her, Marissa Nadler, Zola Jesus, and Chelsea Wolfe as self-contained women making uncompromising art steeped in haunted melodrama. It’s an oversimplification, but Rundle is too kind to brush off my conjecture completely. “Marissa is a friend and Chelsea is, too. Zola Jesus, I’ve never met, but we’re playing a festival together in a few weeks.” 

With tarot tapestries and books like Basic Witches for sale in Urban Outfitters everywhere, we’re witnessing a mainstreaming of the occult. Trend or not, Rundle doesn’t mind being connected to arcane female power. “It’s good company,” she allows. “It’s a unique moment, a little scene if you will. I’m happy to be associated with such lovely ladies.”

Good company is something Emma Ruth Rundle knows a lot about. Since 2008, she’s released records with the Nocturnes, Red Sparowes, and Marriages. It's her solo albums, however, where Rundle’s impassioned vocals and swirling guitars have coalesced into a sonic thumbprint. On Dark Horses (out now via Sargent House) is a career highlight — an album that marries a hazy, soft-focus mood to the artist’s most fully-realized songcraft to date.

Rundle is speaking to me via Skype from Berlin, tonight’s stop on an extensive European jaunt. She’s on the road with her husband Evan Patterson’s experimental Americana act Jaye Jayle, two members of which play in Rundle’s own live band. Her relationship with Patterson grew out of such travel. “We did a split release (2017’s The Time Between Us [Sargent House]) which was a foretelling of what was to come,” Rundle explains. “Touring that record, we fell in love and now we’re married.”

“A life spent in pieces,” she sings on album opener “Fever Dreams.” The title is a fitting metaphor for On Dark Horses’ shadowy sound. It also hints at a fractured personal history. “It’s pretty literal,” Rundle confirms. “My sister and I came from some abuse as children and a household that included drug problems, physical abuse, and mental health issues that have been genetically passed on.”

Flanged cymbals, hypnotic rhythms, plenty of reverb — descriptors like neo-psychedelia and shoegaze are easy to bat around when discussing the new record. Rundle agrees. “The album as a whole has a quality that definitely references shoegaze.” There’s also powerful ensemble playing and she’s quick to credit Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Young Widows) for helping to achieve both the sound and performances. “We tracked as a group,” Rundle says. “That contributed to the cohesiveness of the album and Kevin’s production added that sort of softness to it.”

Central to the record are those distinctive guitar lines and beguiling vocals, leading to the question of whether she writes more as a singer or instrumentalist. For Rundle, it’s a combination.

“The roles are pretty interwoven,” she says. “I start all my songs on acoustic. From there, vocal melodies present themselves. I write all the lyrics and transfer it over to electric where I work with the band.” Still, even after completing a record, the songs continue to evolve. “Live, I’m noticing that the music is a bit heavier than it is on the record.”

Indeed, the heavy music community has always embraced Rundle as part of what she jokingly refers to as the “trifecta of Chelsea Wolfe, Marissa Nadler, and I.” She’s appeared at Northwest Terrorfest and supported King Buzzo of the Melvins. Perhaps its the elemental nature of Rundle’s music speaks to fans of that genre. “There’s a simple line that comes from playing in Red Sparowes — a post-rock band — to Marriages where we opened for Deafheaven. While my music may not be metal, I listen to a lot of it and feel comfortable in that world.”

It’s not all Rundle listens to, but the dark stuff bubbles to the top. She describes PJ Harvey and Tori Amos as being “like gods” during her formative years. “I’m also into Chris Whitley, the singer/songwriter,” she says. “His whole story and everything about that person is inspiring and fascinating. I’m kind of obsessed with him.”

Horses are another recent obsession — even Rundle’s new paintings are equestrian-themed. And then there’s the album title itself. “I wrote 'Darkhorse' for my sister,” she says. “It’s about overcoming childhood stuff, surviving and thriving despite circumstances that may have led us down a different path.” The concept flowered from there. “It was a metaphor that became a mythological character which came to life and I fixated on.”

A sense of wonder about the natural world permeates the lyrics as well. “We outshine the sun, we out-rise the moon,” she and Evan sing on “Light Song.” At first blush, the track sounds like it’s about rebirth while alluding to the pair’s romantic connection.

“There are parts taken from traditional folk wedding songs — some of the baptismal stuff about getting in the water,” explains Rundle. “It’s this blissful love song that’s ended up referencing and representing our relationship.”

A longtime Los Angeles resident, Rundle now lives with Patterson in his hometown of Louisville, KY, where they recorded On Dark Horses. The new setting suits her. “Louisville is affordable and we have a great quality of life. I couldn’t tour this much or be this productive as a visual artist and musician in LA. I’d be working two jobs.”

Directed by Louisvillian Danielle Elise Bartley, the video for “Light Song” paints their existence in dreamy hues. Rundle reveals one personal detail. “We got to borrow Evan’s Dad’s classic car which I thought was pretty cute.”

The clip and its idealized Southern Gothic atmosphere bring me back to my original line of questioning. Seeking a fresh angle, I mention that this article is set to run October 31st and inquire about Rundle’s own spooky traditions.

“I love Halloween and that subtle change in the air, the thinning of the veil between worlds,” she admits. “While my music may not be witchy, I’m definitely down with the creepy stuff.”

Kejriwal takes on BJP in Gujarat with polls around the corner

From riding an auto rickshaw to visiting schools and temples and announcing sops for different constituencies, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken the ruling BJP head-on in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s native State Gujarat which goes for the assembly polls in three months.

Since March this year, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo has made a dozen trips to Gujarat, visited various regions, addressed rallies, offered prayers at temples and held town hall interactions with different communities in a bid to position the AAP, a new political start-up in the State, as the main challenger of the ruling party that is in power since 1998.

So far, he has announced a wide range of pre-poll sops including free electricity, unemployment allowance to youth, monthly allowance to women, stipend to new lawyers and free education and healthcare services to all.

On September 12 evening, the Delhi Chief had dinner at an auto-rickshaw driver’s home in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia, which is the assembly constituency of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

At the Town Hall meeting in which the Delhi CM interacted with more than 500 auto-rikshaw drivers in the city, Vikram Dantani, an auto driver invited Mr. Kejriwal for dinner, which the latter accepted.

However, the drama occurred when Mr. Kejriwal was briefly stopped by the police for riding the auto-rickshaw. The police stopped him from travelling in the rikshaw citing security concerns, which led to heated arguments between the CM and police.

Following the argument, the CM eventually was allowed to travel to the auto driver’s house in the three-wheeler which was escorted by two police cars, while one policeman sat beside the driver in the driver’s seat.

Though BJP leaders in the State have publicly dismissed the challenge from the AAP calling it a “media hype”, privately they talk about the “disproportionate visibility” the AAP and Mr. Kejriwal have generated ahead of the high-stake assembly elections in the State.

“He has been able to generate visibility and has become a talking point of discussions,” a State BJP leader admitted, adding that the party takes him very seriously irrespective of the AAP’s prospects in Gujarat, where the polity has remained bipolar for the last three decades.

In Ahmedabad and almost all major cities in the State, the sheer number of ‘Ek mauko Kejriwal ne (One chance to Kejriwal)’ banners on the auto-rickshaws and slogans boldly painted on the walls with the smiling face of Mr Kejriwal with folded hands can be hardly missed.

On his part, besides announcing a slew of sops or “freebies” or what the BJP leaders call it “revdi,” Mr. Kejriwal has concentrated on wooing different segments of the electorate like auto-rickshaw drivers, lawyers, traders, village heads or sarpanches and sanitation workers.

His promise to the policemen that their salaries will be increased if AAP is voted to power in the State prompted the State government to immediately revise the salary of lower-ranking policemen, who have been fighting for hike in grade pay for years.

The State government has announced a raise in the salaries of the cops effective from August 2022.

The Delhi CM has on occasion also deployed Manish Sisodia, his deputy, to visit Gujarat and juxtapose the quality of education in government-run schools in the two States. Mr. Sisodia’s few visits to the State-run schools in Gujarat forced the BJP government to turn its attention to the education sector in which the State has remained a laggard as the quality of education in the government schools leaves much to be desired.

During every trip to Gujarat, Mr. Kejriwal doubles down on what the BJP leaders including PM Narendra Modi call “revdi” while asking, “What’s better, the government providing free education and health or waiving loans of certain corporates?”

In his bid to be the main challenger of the BJP in its strongest bastion, Mr. Kejriwal has apparently forced both parties, the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, to follow the narrative he has set.

If the ruling BJP has hiked the salaries of cops and turned its attention to improving the quality of schools in Gujarat, the opposition Congress has more or less copied the major sops like free electricity up to 300 units and setting up of 3000 new English medium schools if the party is voted to power in the State.

This exhibition is a window to city life during monsoon

With some of them almost a photographic reflection of daybreak after rain, artist Purnendu Mandal's canvasses -- currently on exhibition at Triveni Kala Sangam here -- are a deluge of vivid warm colours that capture a city's landscape after rain.

"It is almost like looking outside a window, but through a work of art," Mandal told IANS.

Mandal's 15 acrylic- and oil-on-canvass artworks - collectively titled "Reflections 3" - document the subtleties of urban life during the rains -- first light in a city, storms, rickshaw-pullers and bus drivers resuming activity after a rainy day, and building silhouettes reflecting in the water-filled puddles.

Also included are visual effects of the monsoon like rain drops, fog, wet climate, reflections in water and shades of dampness.

To that extent, "Good Morning Kolkata" (2018), a painting of a tram on a damp Kolkata street, with old buildings and bundles of electric wires adding to the realistic depiction, reflects a day in the city as one would experience it.
