“All I Saw Was You" Timeline

Summary:

My Stiles/Jackson series called "All I Saw Was You" starts 14 years after the end of season 2 which is what I call the "present". At the same time, you also find out what happened in the "past" and what happens in the "future". This timeline establishes an order of the chapters throughout the years but personally, I recommend to read it in the order in which is posted on AO3. 

* This timeline will be updated when I post more parts.

* I’m posting it here to link it on the description of my series and delete it from AO3, so it needs to edited another day after deleting 3 chapters like this one that were not “stories”. I can’t risk losing my account or having it frozen again for something like this.

* I love to know what people think of the story, the OCs, the voices, etc... so feedback is very welcome and always cheers me up. I reply as soon as I can.

Notes:

I never expected to write this timeline and that's why I had not done it in six years—Because I still think that it's better to read the story as it's been posted, but Aceadams asked me last month if I had done one and I remembered that Wam6996 had also asked me about it a lot of time ago... so I started to think about it as a way to establish a sort of layout of the story in a more visual way (not as a reading order although people are free to read it as they wish/prefer), and finally, I was like "okay, why not?" So, I decided to write it down.

This has taken some time to finish, so it'd be nice to know if it's useful for anybody... because I also thought that, apart from those two people, maybe nobody would care about it.

경찰은 고발을 남발하는 경향이 있다. 문제는 검사장의 기소로 법정에 올라갈 때이다. 내가 늘 하는 말이지만 사건이란 들어갈 때는 사자 같고 나올 때는 어린 양 같다. 강간 미수나 가중폭행 같은 사건은 얼마든지 단순폭행으로 둔갑할 수 있다는 뜻이다. (p13)

나는 빠른 걸��으로 문을 나섰다. 유치장 안에 들어가는 일은 늘 언짢았다. ���망이 너무 가늘어서일까? 형사법 변호사와 범죄자 변호사 사이의 구분선. 가끔은 철망 어느 쪽에 내가 서 있는지조차 모호할 때가 있다. 철망 안쪽에 있지 않은 것이 내게는 늘 천운에 불과했다. (p24)

그리고 나는 내 자신에게 고개를 끄덕여보였다. 내가 해온 일이나 말에 꿇릴 것은 없다. 이건 내 직업이고 이 일은 이런 식으로 움직여야 한다. 개업한 지 15년, 이제는 아주 단순한 개념으로 정리할 수 있다. 법이란, 사람과 생명과 돈을 닥치는 대로 삼켜버리는 거대한 괴물이다. 나는 괴물을 다루고 질병을 고쳐주는 전문가이며, 그에 상응하는 대가를 받아내는 것뿐이다. 지키고 품어야 할 법 따위는 더 이상 존재하지 않는다. 당사자주의, 억제와 균형, 정의의 추구 같은 로스쿨 개념은, 다른 세계에서 건너온 조각상처럼 부식되어버린 지 오래였다. 법은 진실과 아무 상관이 없다. 그곳엔 오직 타협과 개량과 조작만이 있을 뿐이다. 마찬가지로 나도 무죄냐 유죄냐를 다루는 것이 아니다. 세상에 유죄 아닌 자가 어디 있단 말인가? 그런 건 아무래도 좋다. 사건이란 싸구려 하청으로 지어진 건물과 같다. 귀퉁이를 잘라먹고 철근을 빼먹고 거짓말로 그 표면을 색칠해버린 빌딩. 따라서 내 일은 날림공사의 페��트를 벗겨 균열을 드러내 보이는 것이다. 균열마다 손가락을 밀어 넣어 더 넓혀 놓아야 하고, 균열을 있는 대로 키워 건물을 무너뜨리고, 그게 여의치 않으면 그 안에서 의뢰인이라도 빼내면 된다. 사람들은 나를 나쁜 놈이라고 욕하지만 그건 사실과 다르다. 나는 다만 교활한 천사일 뿐이다. 나는 진짜 로드세인트이다. 그들은 나를 원하고 필요로 한다. 시스템이 나를 원하고 범죄자들도 나를 원한다. 나는 윤활유이다. 기어를 부드럽게 만들어 시스템이 제대로 돌아가도록 지켜야 하는 윤활유이다. "어, 그가 한 거래요?" 로라는 언제나 이런 식의 부적절한 질문을 던졌다. 사실 피고가 범행을 저질렀느냐 아니냐는 사건의 전술에 비추어 별 의미가 없었다. 중요한 것은 증거이고 증인이며, 그리고 그것들을 어떻게 중화해낼 것이냐의 문제였다. 내 직업은 증거를 묻어버리고 그 위에 회색 물감을 타는 것이다. 회색이야말로 합리적 의속의 색깔이기 때문이다. (p62)

난 완벽한 기억을 신뢰하지 않는다. 불가능하기 때문이다. 증인의 기억에서 약점을 끄집어내는 것이 내 직업이자 노하우가 아닌가. 누군가 지나치게 많은 것을 기억하고 있다면 난 무턱대고 긴장부터 한다. 특히 피고 쪽이라면 더더욱. (p125)

"루이스, 일이 어떻게 돌아가는 건지 간단하게 말해주지. 내가 하는 일이 뭔지 아나? 난 중화제야. 검사의 증거를 묽게 만드는 역할을 하는 거지. 증거와 증언 하나하나를 끄집어내서 논점에서 제거해버리는 게 내 일이라고." (p150)

나는 마치 물속에 빠진 기분이었다. 내가 한 말이 모두 기포 속에 들어가 어디론가 흘러가버리고 있었다. 이렇게 말을 알아듣지 못하다니. 그리고 나는 뭔가 놓치고 있다는 사실을 깨달았다. 무언가 치명적인것이 있었다. 테드 민튼이 초짜인지는 몰라도 어리석은 인간은 아니다. 그런데 나라는 놈은 그가 어리석은 짓을 하고 있다는 판단 때문에, 여태껏 헛다리를 짚고 있었던 것이다. LA 카운티의 검사실은 로스 쿨에서도 알짜들만 빼온 집단이다. 그가 남부 캘리포니아를 언급했는데 그곳이 초일류 변호사들을 양산해내는 로스쿨임을 모르는 사람은 없었다. 이자의 경험이 일천할지는 몰라도 법지식까지 일천한 것은 아니라는 뜻이다. 그러니까 이해를 못하는 것은 이자가 아니라 바로 나였다. "내가 놓치고 있는 게 있군." (p163)

나는 파일들을 옆으로 밀치고는, 안짱다리를 하고 앉은 채 한참동안이나 꼼짝하지 않았다. 마음속 깊은 곳에서 누군가의 속삭임 소리가 들려왔다. 자기는 무죄라고 외치며 닭똥 같은 눈물을 흘리던 지저스의 얼굴도 떠올랐다. 제발 믿어달라고 했건만 난 그에게 유죄를 인정하라고 다그치기만 했다. 내가 제공한 것은 법적 조언 이상이었다. 그에게는 돈도 없었고, 변호도 기회도 주어지지 않았다. 아니, 돈이 없었기에 변호도 없고 기회도 박탈당한 것이었다. 그렇다. 난 그에게 선택의 여지가 없다고 했다. 유죄라는 단어를 인정한 것은 궁극적으로 그의 결정이고 그의 입이었다 해도, 지금 내 기분은 그 반대라고 말하고 있었다. 변호사의 권위를 앞세워 그의 목에 시스템의 칼을 대고 항복하라고 강요했던 것이다. 나는 허리를 굽히고 무릎에 팔꿈치를 받치고는 두 손으로 얼굴을 감쌌다. 가장 우려했던 일이 사실로 드러나고 만 것이다. 2년 전에 찾아온 기적이었지만 난 전혀 눈치도 채지 못했다. 지금까지도 말이다. 기적처럼 찾아온 무고한 의뢰인을 알아보지도 잡아주지도 못한 것이다. 아니, 오히려 다른 의뢰인들처럼 통째로 시스템의 밥으로 던져주고 만 꼴이었다. 이제 그의 무고는 잿빛으로 바래고 차갑게 굳어버렸으며, 대리석과 강철의 성벽 안에 갇힌 꼴이 되었다. 그리고 난 그 죄 의식을 품고 남은 생을 살아야 할 것이다. (p208)

재판 경험이야 상대보다 월등히 많지만 그렇다고 본질을 외면할 수는 없다. 나는 기껏 법이라는 거대한 발톱 아래 서 있는 미물에 지나지 않았다. 그렇다, 나는 미물에 지나지 않았다. 상대가 생애 최초로 중범재판을 맡은 초짜이기는 해도, 내가 가진 이점은 결국 거대 조직의 권력과 체계로 인해 십분 반감될 수밖에 ���었다. 검사의 논고에는 전 사법체계의 힘이 실려 있기 때문이다. 그리고 그와 대항하기 위해 내가 가지고 있는 건 내 자신과 죄를 지은 의뢰인뿐이었다. (p288)

Reading SVSSS: Chapter 2

For those who don't know, I am reading SVSSS for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

Chapter 2: Mission

Okay pre read thoughts here. This story is so good! I am totally loving the premise of this, the system mechanics are wonderful (so much sass) but also so unpredictable!

I'm not going to lie I am nervous for this mission that Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu and co are about to go on. I just feel like things are about to get completely fucked LOL

again (as a reader not as system in book) points to Shen Yuan for noting how nasty the relationships are in this OG canon (p 63 re: Die-er and Old Master Chen- barf)

Okay but like I get it Shen Yuan- I still cannot imagine attempting to fake being a martial master OMG p.64

I am once again here to talk about how Shen Yuan talks about Luo Binghe (he is a child- another barf) but also Shen Yuan does have this future(?) omniscient (?) knowledge about about what he becomes as a fully realized adult character - it still makes me deeply uncomfortable RE: "Shen Qingqiu could only say that, as expected, the brilliant protagonist truly was overwhelmingly cool, awesome, insane, and badass, with a dick longer than the heavens" p68
