I finally got and read the taz graphic novels and I have thoughts!!! I absolutely loved them all and Def recommend them to anyone who enjoys taz.

but anyways I’m putting my thoughts under a cut in case anyone who hasn’t read them wants to avoid spoilers? or something? I mean I’m mainly pointing out things that differ from the podcast plus some opinions so ANYWAYS

first off I super loved the art, carey pietsch did such a great job on everything. the only thing I didn’t rly like (and this is mainly personal opinion!) is I’m not big on over-the-top silly faces, which is like.... 90% of taako’s appearances. not big on the stretchy pointy mouth thing. but it’s funny sure! I def could’ve done without it tho

another personal opinion but I rly...was not a fan of magic brian’s design :\ I was super excited to see his appearance, but uhh... kinda similar with the whole “overexaggerated features” type of thing. just not my cup of tea!

also!! let!!!! angus mcdonald!!!! swear!!!!!!! he canonically swears in the podcast and I was very sad they didn’t let him swear in the book :(

but anyways angus mcdonald is a Good Boy and, like killian, everything about him is a blessing.

for the most part I rly enjoyed everyone’s designs (minus magic brian), like Avi was different than I headcanon’d, but I still like his design.

I wish we had more time w johann, they cut his whole elevator/ “I’m basically the greatest violinist in the world” speech and like 95% of his character development :(

also!!!!! they called him a human????? when he’s a half-elf?????? (I mean to be fair I completely forgot he was half-elf cause it’s only mentioned once during his introduction, but I’ve been obsessively reading the wiki since finishing Balance so I KNOW)

still weirds me out that taako’s umbrastaff isn’t red. Like I’m p sure that was more fanon than canon, but I think this is literally the only interpretation I’ve seen that isn’t red?? it’s just weird idk.

I adore davenport’s design and it breaks my heart at the same time. Reading the gn is a completely different experience based on whether you have/n’t listened to all of Balance. oof.

it’s such a tiny scene but there’s a point when they’re on the moon base and lucretia shows them a whiteboard, on the other side (before she flips it) is johann transcribing the voidfishes melody, with only E and G so far, it’s such subtle foreshadowing (to those who know it) and I love it ;u;

also they skipped out on Robbie/Pringles???? and magnus getting drunk before they went flying to rockport, I was looking forward to that :( We get to see a glimpse of robbie at the carnival and evidence of his Potions Stash in their bunk, but idk I’m still bummed

tbh I just wanted to see taako in his sleepy sack, but no they redid that whole part so their call to get the relic was during their walkaround, not at night. oh well.

taako’s whole distrust in the whole BoB and ~everything~ is a lot more apparent here and I super super appreciate it. to me it wasn’t rly obvious in the podcast until the end of suffering where he was literally “taako trusts nobody!”, but him demanding answers from lucretia and making it clear that sure he’ll still go along w it all but doesn’t mean he trusts it, idk that was refreshing to see.

lucretia asking taako where he got his umbrastaff and him saying “I found it like two adventures ago! On some skeleton in a cave” HI MY HEART IS BREAKING. OW. and lucretia’s reaction afterwards was just :(((

continuing off that same scene after that taako says “see? answering someone’s questions isn’t hard at all... is it?” and just. oof. oof oof oof. how much that’s gotta pain her. how much she’s hiding from them and she literally can’t answer those questions :( 

and like.... ok at the end of PttM after they turned in the relic merle goes “I can’t comprehend the kind of heartless person who could let something like that sash out into the world” and just........ O W :((((((((((((

also I can’t believe I forgot but they left out the whole Test of Initiation?? I was hyped for that, but I can see why they cut it. that would’ve been fun to see.

I was almost upset they cut taako’s Blink during the Trent fight, but they included it in the elevator scene, and gosh they did it gloriously. still a bit different than what I imagined, but with the whole Hunger Scout eyes and different plane weirdness it was super creepy and super great.

I’m sad they didn’t include the “FLOOR-TWENTY” joke :( or magnus besting a safe in a poisoning contest. or taako chewing everyone else out for stealing at a bank (while merle never. stops. staring at him.), those were some good goofs oh well

ok, magnus’s “ya squished!” moment when he (accidentally) killed the shark gang ppl had me absolutely dying. his face, the instant regret, absolutely everything about that bit was hilariously perfect. major kudos to carey for pulling that scene off so well lmao.

they included taako’s “I’m a fully realized creation!” moment and it was perfect :) but they didn’t include magnus’s “quick, cast calm emotion!” bit which always made me laugh :(

the cricket guy possessing taako scene was so creepy and perfect, that’s one of my fave scenes in that arc and they did it super well. bless.

garyl! tbh idk if they did him justice, but at the same time idk if it’s even possible to fully do him justice in that format. it’s just not the same without his voice.

they put so much extra time and effort into hurley/sloane’s relationship and I’m so glad ;;w;;

they changed up barry’s speech at the end of PttM into something more Actually threatening and/or foreshadowing, and I’m so glad tbh. the original “are you afraid?” in the podcast was... idk, weird. way to get off on the wrong foot barry lmao. and his whole “are you sure you should trust the BoB?” OH DANG. he went there. planting the suspicion early, I like it.

‘Life is what you make it’ never really applied for Melody Davenport. To say Melody was an unexpected child would be a hefty understatement. Her mother was 15 when she was born, and the paternity of her father was a tightly-guarded secret. The closest thing Annie Davenport ever provided as an answer was ‘some guy from another school.’ That news wasn’t taken lightly by the girl’s family. The decision to have Melody resulted in her being disowned and kicked out of their home. The Davenports had been a fairly well-off family, stacked with some of the finest doctors and lawyers Chicago had to offer. Annie dropped out of high school on her the day of her sixteenth birthday, unable to keep up with her classes, a job, and Melody – even with the help of whatever family allowed her to crash on their couch.

Annie managed, though. With a lot of help and a lot of hope, she managed. At least, she did until Mel’s paternity became less of a secret. She was five when it all fell apart. An allegation against Annie’s high school principal from a girl, fifteen at the time. And then another. And another. By the time of his trial, six girls had stepped forward, not including Annie Davenport. All six girls claiming he’d said the same words. He loved them, and he’d be leaving his wife as soon as they were of age, then they could really be together.

Annie Davenport changed then. She lost her optimism that they would get out of the one-bedroom trailer they called home. Loving glances toward her daughter shifted into looks of disdain and resentment. Comments about how much she looked like her father increased while the woman’s affection waned. That became her childhood, from her mother and beyond. Although her mother never came forward, it didn’t take long for those close to them to put together the pieces. After all, what are the odds that Melody Avery Davenport was named for former Vice Principal William Avery?

She couldn’t escape that legacy. After all, it had been a big scandal in a small school, even among the administration. Melody was treated as someone to be cast aside and out of sight, no matter how much she poured herself into her education and tried to build friendships. It was hard to be friends with ‘that girl.’ So in high school, she fell in with the other kids who were best dealt with by not dealing with them at all.

She found trouble as often as she could. Melody started dealing, finally finding something she was good at. Better yet, it was easy. She was no longer working against the grain, trying to swim upstream. She was doing what was expected as the daughter of that woman with a drinking problem and a former school administrator that had a taste for younger girls. The system worked against her at every turn, so she would gladly return the favor.

Melody managed to graduate on time, against the odds. It wasn’t long after, though, that the universe caught up with her. She was taken down in a drug sting in the greater Chicago area. She was given a chance to flip, to give up her supplier and everyone up the chain she could. But the girl remained quiet, accepting her four year sentence with the possibility of parole in two. She served her time, keeping her head down and staying out of trouble. Melody was released, as promised, in two years. She made her plans to get out of Chicago. To work out her time at a local joint with a 'second chance’ program for people with less than squeaky clean records until the end of her probation.

When her probation did end, though, Melody quickly found that her minuscule savings weren’t enough to go far. So she slipped back into dealing. This time, though, she kept a small market of people she trusted, or could check into easily. She’d given enough of her time to the Illinois prison system for one lifetime. When she finally saved enough, Melody decided to go somewhere small. Somewhere that felt a lot more like nowhere. That’s how she wound up in Muddy Waters, Illinois. A place that, for all it’s promises of being temporary, started to feel like home a long time ago. It didn’t take long for her to fall in with the Rascals.

She’s an outgoing girl, but she’s never felt the need to fill a silence. She’s been described as 'all edges.’ Someone sharp and abrasive and demanding. After spending most of her life silent, being buffeted around by the choices of others, she decided to find her own footing and take a stand. At her core, she believes herself to be someone who does what it takes to survive. She learned most of her lessons the hard way, and found that the past of least resistance is always her best course. She’s fairly secretive, keeping details about her life to herself and always playing close to the chest. She’s fairly cold and detached, constantly combatting the fear of letting someone in only to have them turn on her in one way or another.

Woodbury Lions Club hosting American Red Cross blood drives

Blood Drives in Cannon County for over 60 years.

It has been said that the Lions Club drives are the best in the Tennessee Valley Region Blood Services area, which includes all of Tennessee, parts of Kentucky, and Alabama.

The extra effort put forth by the Lions Club has little to do with it. The Woodbury Lions Club has a committee of members that work together to help insure that everything runs smoothly, along with community volunteers who like to help out.

Some of the volunteers have more experience working with blood drives that the actual Red Cross staff who go out daily working with blood drives within the area.

Committee chairmen’s Patsy and Carl Hirlston and Bobby Bogard with committee members Ken and Artie Jean McIntyre, Lois Larimer, Clyde Thomas, Nolan Northcutt, Robert Jennings, Charlie Brown, Clyde and Kitty Bush, Chris Brushaber, Danny Miller, Cliff Swoape, Andy Jacobs, Doug Combs, and Gina Mitchell, all work together along with community volunteers of Bessie Miller, Orval and Esther Gray, Juanita Burks, Cathey Parker, Betty Harder, Shirley Borren, Jane Jennings, Grace Young, Nile Young, Della Young, Robert Young, Kay Campbell, Carol Davenport, Bobbie Henline, Jim Henline, Betty Paschal, Ann Todd, Mary Sue Vinson, and Mary Nelle Hillis too create a professional staff that assist members of the American Red Cross staff.

The Lions Club assigns a task of greeting donors and signing them in, handing out water and assigning donors with a number.

Copies of the Cannon Courier are provided for donors to read before or after their donation.

Red Cross provides snacks and the Woodbury Lions Club has additional snacks such as: a one-of-a-kind trail mix, peanut butter and crackers, baloney and crackers, and cheese and crackers.

A staff works in the canteen area who assist the donors after they have donated by getting them a drink of juice, water, soda, or coffee and then sitting with them and talking. They also watch the donor to see if the donors face color changes or if their arm starts bleeding from where the donor had given blood.

Woodbury Club also keeps records of each donation and awards donors with pins and Certificates when completing gallon donations. Along with taking pictures of donors receiving awards and being pinned with a gallon donation pin, plus having members of the Lions Club calling and reminding donors of upcoming blood drives also adds a little bit more to why Cannon County Blood Drives are better and produces more regular donors than other areas which has a larger population.

Woodbury Lions Club host six blood drives a year, always the third Thursday in January, March, May, July, September, and November. Each blood drive is noon until six pm except May’s drive, which runs from 9 am until 6 pm. May’s blood drive is a donor appreciation drive, and most of the businesses in Cannon County donate door prizes.

In the last five to six years, each donor was able to win three of four items because of the generosity of the businesses and their support of the Lions Club and wanting to reward the true everyday heroes of Cannon County, those who give of themselves to help save the lives of others. In most cases, they are saving the lives of people who they do not know.

On May 20th, 2010 the following businesses provided door prizes for the heroes of Cannon County: A Touch of Home Flower’s & Gifts, Arts Center of Cannon County, Auto Zone, Birdsong Adhesives, Boyd’s Garage, Briar Rose Flowers and Gifts, Bromley/Jennings Automotive, Cannon County Chiropractic, Cannon Market, Captain D’s, CareAll, Cell Plus, Coco Tan & Spa, Chilangoes Mexican Restaurant, Curves, Cutting Edge Hair Salon, D J’s Pizza and Steakhouse, Family Dentistry Deason & Bucher, Farm Bureau Insurance, First National Bank, Flower Occasions, Gina’s Boutique, Hardee’s, Hayes Bros Auto Care, Hibdon’s Body Shop, Higgins Car Wash, J P’s Fine Swine Bar-B-Que, Jennings Jewelers, Joe’s Place, Legendary Cuts, Lightwriters Photography, Lions Pizza Den, The Millennium Hair Salon, Moonlite Drive-In, NAPA, The Old Feed Store, One Stop Market, Parsley’s Market & Deli, Paul Reed’s Furniture, Paul’s Auto Service, Piggly Wiggly, Potter’s Ace Hardware, Quick Shop Market, Reed’s Building Supply, Regions Bank, Roger Hindman Body Shop, Scavenger Hunt Flea Market, Scavenger Hunt Trading Post, The Scoreboard, Shirt Shack, Shotgun County Pawn & Gun, Smitty Tire Shop, Stewart’s Printing, Stone Gait Tack and Feed, Subway, West End Tobacco Store, Woodbury Auto Express, Woodbury Insurance Agency, and Woodbury Lawn & Garden. Every donor and volunteer received a promotional ink pen from DTC, a pillbox from Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperation, Chap Stick from FirstBank, a value meal card from Sonic, and a 3 pound bag of stone ground corn meal from The Readyville Mill.

The Red Cross also provided promotional items and the Woodbury Lions Club provided $10 gift certificates and a grand prize of $100 gift card.

It is very hard to find another community that has so many businesses that support a civic club as much as the ones in Cannon County.

Most all the businesses give support to the Woodbury Lions Club for sponsorship of the Lions Club Horse Show, White Cane donations, and door prizes for the donor appreciation Blood Drive. Without support from the local businesses, the Woodbury Lions Club would not be able to do as much as it does within the community, state, country, and world. Local businesses are one of the leading reasons why Cannon County Blood Drives are so much better that anywhere else in the state.

Another reason and probably the number one reason the blood drives are the best anywhere is the volume of regular donors in Cannon County. In any community only a certain per cent are eligible to donate and of that per cent only about 3 to 5 percent actually donates, but the donors in Cannon County has a much higher percent.

This is not due to the Lions Club and its part, nor the businesses and its part, but it is the individual donor and the way of life in Cannon County, the way most have been raised to want to help others in need in any way they can.

The mentality of the average person in Cannon County is to serve in any way they can. This mentality is one of the reasons Woodbury Lions Club is one of the largest clubs in the state.

It is why the businesses give as much as they do, and why so many volunteers do jobs within the county for little or no pay. The parents, schools and churches within the community teach the children from an early age of the importance of giving back to the community in which they live and the lesson that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

This is why Cannon County has had over 360 donors in the past 2-½ years. Woodbury Lions Club and the American Red Cross both use fiscal years that begin on 1 July and end 30 June.

Those donating Double Red Blood Cells count as two donations, the max number of times any one can give in a fiscal year in whole blood or double red cells is 6. The number that follows a persons name is the amount of pints given as of 30 June 2010.

A lot of the credit is given to the Lions Club for putting out an extra effort.

Some credit is given for having good media coverage with the Cannon Courier, the Cannon Wire, and WBRY radio. Some credit is given for the support given by the businesses in Cannon County.

Any community can have a civic organization that puts forth the extra effort, and have good media and local businesses supporting them, but they don’t have the attitude and dedication of serving others that is instilled into Cannon Countians from birth until death.

The Woodbury Lions Club expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the media, businesses, and donors for exceeding the yearly goals set forth by the Red Cross based on past history.
