Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
The lawn is dead. Long live the lawn. Lately this entrenched symbol of American domestic life — verdant, weed-free and crisply mowed — has come under wider scrutiny as a profligate relic, out of sync with an ecologically conscious era.
For many years, environmentalists have deplored conventional turf grass lawns as biodiversity dead zones that require billions of gallons of water every week in the United States, with outdoor irrigation accounting for a third of household water consumption on average nationwide, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. To say nothing of the polluting fertilizers and toxic pesticides and all the mowers belching greenhouse gases to keep those lawns lush and manicured.
“Lawns seem to draw as much irrational hate as they do love these days,” said Paul Robbins, dean of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the author of “Lawn People: How Grasses, Weeds, and Chemicals Make Us Who We Are.”
He added, “Green lawns, as much as brown ones, are now seen as a moral failing.”
But there is room for compromise. Even the most ardent proponents of sustainable, ecologically mindful landscaping argue that a simplistic “lawns are evil” narrative is unhelpful.
Edwina von Gal, a landscape designer in East Hampton, N.Y., who founded the Perfect Earth Project a decade ago to promote toxin-free, biodiverse gardens, emphasizes that lawns are not inherently negative.
“There’s nothing else like lawn for playing with your kids or your dog or a Frisbee,” she said. “But I always ask people to think about how much lawn they need. How far can you throw a Frisbee?”
Her philosophy: “Think of a lawn as more of a function than a fashion, because the fashion is changing.”
A growing number of Americans are scaling back their grass lawns or doing away with them entirely, especially in drought-affected parts of the West, where some states and municipalities have implemented restrictions on new lawns and on irrigation as well as offering financial incentives to replace existing lawns with low-water landscapes.
“Really you have to look at lawns as reservoirs, given the amount of water it takes to care for them,” said Charlie Ray, founder of the Green Room, a landscape architecture firm in Phoenix. “We are trying to reframe the conversation of what is beauty and what is lush-feeling. When you see these huge, incredibly water-intensive lawns, is that really what high-end looks like?”
Even in the desert, it is possible to create seasonal landscapes that feel lush, using native, “water wise” plant material, he said. And a bit of functional lawn can absolutely be a part of that.
Just how much lawn depends on factors that include local climate and ecology. A general rule of thumb suggested by Ms. von Gal is two-thirds for the birds. “The science shows that if you have roughly 70 percent natives, you’re going to be able to support a healthy bird population, and they’re the key indicator species for environmental health,” she said.

Backyard Chickens: A Master Post
So you want your own little dinosaurs to eat your table scraps and make breakfast for you in the sunny months. Well! I am here to provide a quick starter to getting your own flock set up - and yes, for urban chickens as well.
Things to consider:
What can you have? Local laws usually dictate how many chickens can be kept per household/acre. Laws can vary by state and city. Look this up first. You can usually keep more bantams (miniature chickens) than their full-size cousins, and with chickens being so social I do recommend bantams for urban/suburban yards.
What weather will they be exposed to? Indoor chickens can generate a lot of dust, but small outdoor coops can be difficult to heat safely. Dual purpose breeds are usually more cold-hardy than layer varieties, and everybody likes fresh water and shade in the heat. Frozen water bottles left outside to thaw can keep birds cool, too.
What will eat them? I have had little losses to foxes, personally, and more to neighborhood dogs. Raccoons are nearly everywhere in North America and will tear open fences to eat your babies. (I would know. I've had to deal with the aftermath.) Rabbit hutches are a good starter for bantams, but a good coop made of wood and a yard made of hardware cloth or dog fence panels (and with netting on top for hawks/owls) will keep out most things. Weasels/mink will fit through gaps bigger than an inch, so be careful of that, too.
What do they need? Chickens love to scratch and forage (and some can fly short distances and modest heights) so if you're letting them on the lawn be prepared for them to eat it - no pesticides on that turf! At night, they prefer to sleep on perches/something with a bit of height to it and do best locked in their coop where other critters can't eat them. A place to nest and lay their eggs in their coop (otherwise they will find their own little secret place, God help you find it) and a place to dust-bathe (like chinchillas) to help keep mites and lice out of their feathers. They'll also need some grit and calcium - crushed oyster shell (or their own eggshells) will help.
Where can I get them? Many farm and feed stores like Tractor Supply Company will sell baby chicks during the spring, but if you're looking for specific bantams or unusual breeds I recommend checking out your State Fair or a Poultry Association show [American version located here] and check it out. They're free admission, generally, and almost every show has people who bring birds to sell. While the demographics tend to slant pretty "red" I have seen plenty of blue hair and pronouns at poultry shows. Facebook can also be a great resource.
How do I get everyone to get along? Chickens are notoriously territorial, with a vicious pecking order that make Mean Girls a documentary. Chickens who are raised from chicks together will get along best, but if you need to add more I would introduce two or more at a time (so the newbies have a friend) and put them in a nearby yard/cage for a few days until everyone has worked out their opinions through the bars of a cage. Some breeds are sweeter than others (buff orpington) and some are.... spicy (Plymouth rocks).
Saro's Personal Breed Recommendations
Dual Purpose (cold weather) - Black Australorps , Buff Orpington, New Hampshire Reds are all generally pretty good natured and calm. The platonic ideal of a chicken.
Layer breeds (warm weather) - Leghorns are the go-to, but I have a soft spot for Hamburg as well. And of course, who wouldn't love a chicken who lays dark brown (Marans) or green/blue (Ameraucauna) eggs?
Bantams - D'Anvers with their little beards are my all time favorite and have the biggest personalities in my experience, but Old English Game (even more zippity) and Black Sumatras (all black, even down to the skin, and shockingly calm in hand) are high on the list as well. And everyone loves the fluffy-faced Silkie or feather footed Cochin.
Hopefully this is enough to get you started! Feel free to send me questions or add on with a couple of your own tips (especially non-US people and those with indoor chickens). I've been raising them for eggs, pets, and for show since 2005, but I am always eager to learn.

Book of Demonology Entry: Black Dog
A befuddling and aggressive spirit, they nigh exclusively appear as large dogs, darker than pitch black with glowing eyes of varying color-normally red, if they're angry. On occasion, they may be headless (not to be confused with Inugami) or dragging chains. They are almost always alone, but may have one or two companions. One can expect to encounter them most often during stormy nights, in burial places, church grounds, or at outdoor transitional areas. Traditionally, they are seen as an omen, and their true intentions are unclear - as they may rarely protect the living - normally, people are a target to maim or kill. Time can be bought by avoiding encounter areas, but black dogs are tireless hunters, and will usually achieve their goal within a year. Children like to say black dogs follow along on road trips to keep humans company, but the writer finds themselves unfortunately cynical to this idea.
Other names: Church hound, church grim, hellhound, barghest, shuck, cadejo
Type: Resident
Level: Unclear. Other dark spirits seem to fear them but still treat them as animals.
Causes: When a good sign, they appear to those in need, such as wayward or vulnerable travellers. Most often, they seem to seek out the wicked, especially those who have posed some sort of trouble to the local church. It's not always entirely clear what sort of trouble they deem worthy of their wrath, so best to respect all tenets on their turf. Sometimes, it seems they simply get curious about a particular person, but grow angry at bad reactions.
Abilities: Supernatural tracking, night vision, foretelling death (perhaps just killing targets themselves through mysterious means), shadow travel, amplified abilities of any normal large dog.
Weaknesses: Rely heavily on their sense of smell, only come out when the sky is dim, can be stunned, seem to have trouble entering non-liminal spaces.
Protection: Holy items do not affect them, and most weapons will simply anger them even if they back off temporarily. Strong plant scents seem to be the most effective in causing confusion and warding them off. As with most, this makes white sage an invaluable resource, and good food might calm their judgment. If one seems to be following you without trouble, do your best to keep peace with it.
Famous Sightings/Examples: Annales Bertiniani French church dog, Black Shuck of East Anglia, Belgian chained hound, South Jersey Pine Barrens ghost dog, Los Arcos white cadejo, inspiration for The Hounds of the Baskervilles... "Follow alongs"

i think a lot of dog daycares/kennels, and tbh some shelters and vet offices, fail to consider, on the level of construction, the importance of using material that is both sturdy and easy to clean and easy to replace. Dogs are nasty and also capable of incredible amounts of destruction.
No wood, no brick, nothing with a large surface area (like grates or fences with hard to clean gaps), nothing porous; the facility must have drainage on the floors, must have multiple water sources for sanitation purposes, if play areas are indoors there must be a way to keep water and piss out of the drywall/gaps between wall and floor (caulk is not good enough lmao), must store all food appropriately (using large totes for example) to prevent pests, should invest in artificial turf if outdoors, must use easily sanitized flooring if indoors (personally torn on indoor play areas that have slippery floors bc that can be horrible for a dog's joints and can cause injuries, but it is very cleanable and manageable so i dunno), should absolutely have an industrial grade dishwasher (having ur employee hand wash everything is idiotic and a waste of time and water, and sink water will not get to a high enough temp to kill germs), should have at least one if not multiple washers and dryers, should prevent rodent infestations by managing trees on the property and keeping them several feet from the building as well as making sure there are no gaps or small entryways where rodents may enter, should have an area where sick dogs can be quarantined, should have showers/sanitation stations/eye wash stations for employees in the event that caustic chemicals are used or an employee happens to come in contact with a zoonotic disease, absolutely needs to require all dogs to be vaccinated (NO PUPPIES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY VACCINATED! FR!), and needs to have an appropriate waste manangement system in place, poop scoops tbh are so much easier for employees than making them bend over and bag up each individual piles of shit, but they do also need to be washed; this includes removing all fecal matter and food waste from the building every night or as often as possible to prevent flies esp in the summer. So on and so forth.
taking at least some of these measures will absolutely improve employee QOL as well as the health and safety of dogs and employees alike. Ive been in so many filthy facilities that look clean outwardly but are just fucking disgusting and unsafe bc the owners cut corners during construction.

Pet-Friendly Turf Infill: A Safe Solution with Wonderfill
For pet owners who desire a beautiful, low-maintenance lawn, artificial turf is an increasingly popular option. However, not all turf systems are created equal—especially when it comes to the health and safety of pets. A key component that sets apart pet friendly turf infill artificial grass from others is the type of turf infill used. A non-toxic infill like Wonderfill is a prime example of a solution that meets the needs of both pet owners and their furry companions, ensuring that the outdoor environment is safe, clean, and comfortable.
The Importance of Pet-Friendly Turf Infill:-
Traditional turf infills, such as crumb rubber made from recycled tires, may contain chemicals that can be harmful to pets if ingested or inhaled. These infills can also trap heat, making the turf uncomfortably warm for pets during the hotter months. Moreover, pet urine and other waste can linger in the turf if the infill does not promote proper drainage or odor control.
For pet owners, choosing the right pet-friendly turf infill is essential to creating a safe and enjoyable outdoor space for their animals. A good infill should not only support the turf’s structure but also address concerns about heat, odor, and hygiene.
Wonderfill: A Non-Toxic, Pet-Safe Solution:-
Wonderfill is a specially designed turf infill that has gained popularity for being non toxic infill, pet-safe, and highly effective in maintaining the integrity of artificial grass. Unlike traditional infills, Wonderfill is made from eco-friendly materials and contains no harsh chemicals, making it a healthier alternative for both pets and the environment.
One of the key features of Wonderfill is its antimicrobial properties. These help control bacteria growth in the turf, particularly in areas where pets frequently urinate. By reducing the build-up of harmful microbes, Wonderfill helps maintain a cleaner surface, minimizing the risk of infections or unpleasant odors. This makes it an ideal choice for households with pets that spend a lot of time outdoors.
Benefits of Wonderfill for Pet-Friendly Lawns:-
Non-Toxic and Safe: Wonderfill is made from non-toxic materials, ensuring that pets can play on the turf without the risk of ingesting harmful chemicals. This is particularly important for animals that tend to chew or dig, as the infill will not pose any threat to their health.
Odor Control: Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, Wonderfill helps neutralize odors from pet waste, keeping the turf fresh and clean. This feature is crucial for pet owners who want to maintain an odor-free lawn without the need for frequent cleaning or deodorizing.
Cool Surface: Wonderfill also has a lower heat retention capacity compared to traditional rubber infills. This means that the turf stays cooler under direct sunlight, making it a more comfortable surface for pets to walk and play on, even during the summer months.
Drainage and Cleanliness: Proper drainage is essential for pet-friendly lawns, especially when it comes to managing urine. Wonderfill is designed to facilitate efficient drainage, preventing the build-up of liquids and ensuring the turf remains dry and clean. This helps avoid the formation of muddy spots or bacteria-laden puddles.
Why Choose Wonderfill:-
For pet owners who are considering artificial grass, Wonderfill provides an excellent solution that ensures both safety and comfort for pets. Its non-toxic composition and specialized features make it one of the best options on the market for creating a pet-friendly lawn. Whether you have dogs that love to run and dig or cats that enjoy lounging outdoors, Wonderfill offers a reliable way to maintain a healthy and safe environment.
conclusion:-
Wonderfill is a high-performance, non-toxic turf infill that meets the needs of pet owners seeking a safe and effective solution for their artificial lawns. Its antimicrobial properties, odor control, and cooling benefits make it a standout option for creating a pet-friendly outdoor space.

installing artificial grass for pets in sydney
Installing artificial grass for pets in Sydney can be a game-changer for pet owners seeking a practical and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space. With its diverse climate, which can range from hot and dry summers to wet and humid winters, Sydney presents unique challenges for maintaining natural grass. For pet owners, these challenges multiply. Dogs and cats can easily wear out a natural lawn, leading to muddy patches, dead grass, and a less inviting yard. This is where artificial grass comes in, offering a durable, low-maintenance solution that can withstand the antics of your furry friends.
When considering artificial grass sydney, it’s important to choose a product designed specifically for pets. Standard artificial turf may not hold up under the wear and tear caused by active animals. Look for options that are made from high-quality materials that are resilient and durable. Pet-friendly artificial grass installation typically features reinforced backing and UV protection to prevent fading and degradation from sun exposure. Additionally, many pet-specific turfs include enhanced drainage systems that allow liquids to pass through easily, which is crucial for keeping the area clean and odor-free.
Preparation is key when installing synthetic turf, and the first step is to assess your yard. Begin by determining the area where you want to install the turf. Clear the space of any existing grass, weeds, or debris. This step is critical because any remnants of natural grass can hinder the installation process and may cause uneven surfaces over time. Once the area is clear, it’s advisable to level the ground. This not only ensures an even surface for the turf but also prevents water from pooling in certain areas, which could lead to drainage issues.
After leveling the area, you may want to consider adding a base layer. A combination of crushed rock and decomposed granite can provide the stability and drainage needed for your synthetic turf installation. Spread the base material evenly across the area and compact it thoroughly to create a solid foundation. This step is especially important in Sydney, where heavy rainfall can lead to drainage problems if the ground is not properly prepared. A well-compacted base layer helps mitigate these issues, allowing for efficient water runoff and maintaining the integrity of the turf.
Once your base is set, it’s time to lay down the synthetic turf sydney. Unroll the turf and allow it to acclimate to the ambient temperature. This can help prevent any warping or shrinking that might occur after installation. As you lay the turf, ensure that the fibers are all facing the same direction for a more natural look. When cutting the grass to fit the area, take your time to ensure that the edges align perfectly, avoiding gaps that could detract from the overall appearance.
Securing the artificial grass is an essential part of the installation process. You can use landscape staples, adhesive, or seam tape to keep the turf in place. If you’re working with multiple pieces of grass, ensure that the seams are joined securely to prevent any lifting over time. It's advisable to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines closely during this stage, as proper installation will enhance the longevity and appearance of your new lawn.
One of the most significant benefits of artificial grass is its low maintenance requirements. Unlike natural grass, which requires regular mowing, watering, and fertilizing, artificial turf demands far less attention. However, it is important to clean the surface regularly, especially in a home with pets. Routine waste removal is essential, and a simple rinse with a hose can help eliminate odors. For added freshness, consider using a pet-safe cleaner designed specifically for artificial turf. This can help maintain a pleasant environment for both your pets and your family.
Safety is another critical factor to consider when choosing artificial grass for pets. Most high-quality artificial turfs are non-toxic, meaning they won’t harm your pets if ingested in small amounts. The fibers are typically designed to resist wear and tear, providing a durable surface for pets to play on. Nonetheless, it's wise to check with the supplier regarding specific safety features, especially if your pets have any known sensitivities or allergies.
In terms of aesthetics, artificial grass offers a variety of options that can enhance your outdoor space. With numerous shades of green and different pile heights available, you can easily find a style that complements your home and garden. Many pet owners appreciate the year-round beauty of a lush, green lawn, especially in a city where natural grass can suffer due to heavy usage or seasonal changes. Artificial grass provides the opportunity to maintain an inviting outdoor space without the constant upkeep required by natural grass.
In Sydney’s vibrant outdoor culture, having a well-maintained yard is often a crucial aspect of home life. An artificial lawn can provide a safe and enjoyable space for pets to run, play, and relax. The worry of muddy paws or grass stains becomes a thing of the past, allowing you to enjoy your time outdoors without the associated mess. Whether you’re hosting gatherings or enjoying quiet moments with your pets, artificial grass creates a welcoming environment for everyone.
Moreover, investing in artificial grass can also increase your property’s value. Many homebuyers today seek low-maintenance landscaping solutions, and a well-installed artificial lawn can be a strong selling point. This upgrade not only reduces ongoing landscaping costs but also enhances your home’s curb appeal, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
As you consider the installation process, you may face the decision of whether to tackle the project yourself or hire a professional. While some homeowners feel confident in their ability to manage the installation, others may prefer the expertise that professional landscapers bring to the table. Professionals can ensure that every step of the installation is done correctly, providing peace of mind that your investment will stand the test of time.
In conclusion, installing artificial grass for pets in Sydney can greatly enhance your outdoor living space. With its durability, low maintenance, and aesthetic appeal, artificial turf offers a practical solution for pet owners who want a beautiful yard without the hassle of traditional grass care. By taking the time to properly prepare the area, select the right materials, and follow best installation practices, you can create a safe and inviting environment for your pets to enjoy year-round. Whether through a DIY approach or by hiring professionals, you’ll be investing in a space that both you and your furry friends can cherish for years to come.
