9. That’s All, Jokes!

This is honestly one of my favorite episodes. Easily top 15 for me. The songs are fun and the dancing is great (“Play Nice” is one of my favorite dance numbers in the whole series). I also love how the characters all interact with one another. They’re all so playful! The tone of this episode is one that I really appreciate. It’s pinnacle Wonderland for me.

Now, about the Tweedle costumes! I’ve never colored this version and boy-howdy did I struggle at the beginning. I decided to bring up the saturation with it because they were far too muddy in my opinion. I grew to appreciate them once they were finished but LORD THEY GAWDY!

The rainbow suits were only shown in this episode, but I think they might have been the original designs for their outfits. You can see they’re shown a couple times in this promo (at 20 secs and 1:47) in footage that isn’t from Jokes and I would even dare to say that they’re wearing them in this promotional image that was used in the TV Guide to promote the show before it aired. The fabric looks shinier then their regular costumes and their buttons are reflecting white, you just can’t tell the color of the fabric.

But as for why I think they were used in this episode, it’s because of the pie scene. If you look at that scene Hatter is also missing his vest, you just can’t tell because it’s mostly covered by his jacket. But I think that they didn’t want to use their “good” outfits because they would have been really difficult to clean. They used their purple outfits in the other episode from the week! Which means there was a legitimate reason the rainbow ones were used. And I think it’s because they were practically disposable. Maybe they were dry clean only, idk.

In the end, the rainbow outfits are a muddy mess. Maybe in person they were bright and colorful, but I really don’t think they photographed well. (And they looked even worse when watching them on the vhs recording from the Disney channel.) I’m glad they ditched them and also that the MC a hammer look only lasted for a little while. I really love their vests in their final design, they look so sharp and smart. But we’ve still got these for a while.
